Join Walking Gators’ New Milers Club! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Walking Gators spring kickoff which took place on January 24. At the event, Chris Machen announced a new component of Walking Gators called the Milers Club which allows anyone to be a Walking Gator anytime and anywhere and is available to participants whether or not they can walk on the designated routes at lunch time. Participants of all fitness levels can join one of three milers groups, each aspiring to achieve a different mileage goal by the end of the semester. The 25 Milers will aim to walk 25 miles by April 15 or approximately two miles per week. The 60 Milers will walk about five miles a week, and the 100 milers will walk about 8 miles on average per week. An online tracker will be used to log miles. Participants who make progress on their goal mileage will be eligible for a gift valued up to $25 from the UF bookstore. Five participants will be selected every four weeks between now and April 15. This honor will recognize individuals who have made a healthy lifestyle change or contributed to the Healthy Gators’ mission. Nominations will be accepted Monday, February 7 through Friday, March 4. The winners will be announced in April. Information on eligibility and a nomination form is posted on the Healthy Gators website. Healthy Gators Welcomes New Vice Chair Dr. Steve Dorman was recently appointed as the Healthy Gators Coalition’s new vice chair. He replaced Dr. Jill Varnes, one of the coalition’s cofounders. She served as vice chair for 6 years and retired in December. Dr. Dorman is eager to serve with Chris Machen and the many other coalition members and looks forward to the new projects for the upcoming year. Spring 2010 Healthy Gators Student Survey Results Now Available The Data Collection and Analysis Work Group first administered the Healthy Gators Student Survey in spring 2008 and then again in spring 2010. Findings provide insight into ten key health areas and can be found on our website. The data sets can also be requested by UF faculty, staff and students to assist them with scholarly endeavors, classroom projects and future research. The surve y will be administered next in s p rin g 2012.
