Dear Judge:-
I am in receipt of your favor of the 6th inst. and will say
in reply that I do not myself see how I can give the Duval--Lastinger
case very much attention until after our County Convention. I propose
to fight from now until the Convention for us to carry this County, and
I believe that we will win. We had the opposition badly beaten until
this poll tax pre-requisite was forced on us, and we are moving heaven
and earth to see that our men are qualified to vote. Sparkman is expect-
ed to return here on the 10th inst., but so far has not indicated what
he will do.
Yours very truly,

My dear Mr.Jennings;
S In acknowledging the teceipt of your letter of
the 6th inst in reference to the political situation with res-
pect to your'candidacy, beg to say that so far as I am advised
the condition in the West is unchanged Santa Rosa, Walton,
Iiolmes and Washington, have I believe, made no deals and are com-
mitted to no one I am, I believe in pretty close touch with
the leading men of these counties and feel sure that Mr.Milton's
friends have nothing, so far, to warrant them in claiming the
support of any or either of them.
I have received quite a good many voluntary and very grat-
ifying assurances of support for the position of Attorney-General
and now think it quite likely that my name will be placed-before
the Convention for this position. If my name should come before
the Convention, I would very much appreciate any influence in
my behalf that you or your friends might be able-to exert without
jeopardizing your own interests.
With kind regards and best wishes, I am

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
WASHINGTON.
April 20, 1900.
Hon. W. S. Jennings,
Brooksville, Florida.
My dear Jennings,
When in Tampa the other day I saw Mr. Carter
Who assured me that he had done nothing in the world against you
in your candidacy for Governor. He says he may have introduced
Mr. Myers to several parties, but could not recall having intro-
duced him to any one in Lakeland except Mr. Bonaker. When you see
him he will explain everything to you.
I am under the impression that the delegation from Hillsbor-
ough will be divided at the State Convention, and that you will get
'a liberal share. That seemsto be the views of both factions. I
left there Monday night, and arrived here Wednesday morning.
Trusting this may find you well, I am,
Yours very truly, ovL

Bartow Fla,,April 24th.1900.
Hon.W.S.Jennings,
Brooksville,
Fla.
Dear Sir:.
I guess that ere this time you have given out the idea of
receiving any answer to the letter that you wrote me some time ago,but
I have been waiting, thinking that I could give you a more satisfactory
than I could at once.
Our County Convention to nominate delegates to the State
Convention has been called for May the I7th.and the precint meetings
will be held on May the I2th.
I have been all over the county and into some of the precints
several times within the last month and-find that there is a "kinder
-,_4,. .-- ....---. .. ....
lethargy 'as to the State Official, with the exceptions of Ft.Meade,
Bartow and Lakeland ,The tendercy in the two former places, with the
leaders is for our delegates to go uninstructed and to divide the
vote with you Mess.Beggs and Meyers, but Lakeland is for you and I now
believe that hte delegates from there to the County Convention will
come here instructed or with the understanding to do all possible to
oarry Polk County solid for you. I think that if you could spare the
time and would come down here before the precint meetings you might do
some good.
I being a candidate it would not do for this letter to be
treated any other way than confidential and ask that you treat it as
such, and if I can be of any assistance to you I will gladly aid you
in way than I can.
Yours very truly,

My dear Judge:-
we have absolutely bee. doing nothing but running
politics during the month and are splendidly equipped for the work
that will come off tomorr w and tomorrow night. We will not know
the result here before Saturday morning.
Everything indicates that we will win a complete victory in this
County. If we win, as we have reasons to expect to, our delegation
will be uninstructed and will vote for the various candidates for
Governor in this District at first. The delegates will on the whole
be friendly to yourself and another prominent candidate for governor
in this district, and I do not think you will have the least cause
to fear the result.
Tye will send Mr. Shackleford to the County Convention frori the
6th. precinct. I regret that he has not been very well lately and has
been unable to do anything at all to assist ua in the way of work.
Yours very truly,
Diet' S-Cu.

IMy dear Judge:-
I am in receipt of yaur t.V .favors of 28th inst. in
reference to the situation in this Countyand will say in reply that I
have been watching out for the point suggested by you very carefully
and am not afraid at all of the opposition getting control of the
delegation. We are to icave a delegation committed to no one but a
large majority of them our close personal and political fr$inds that
have stood together for years in this city and will stand together
in the qtate convention regardless of any personal preferences they
may have.
We will certainly send Mr. Macfarlane to the gtate Convention. Mr.
Shackleford is very anxious to go but there is such a rush for places
on the delegation that it is doubtful whether we will be able to
take care of him, but if we are unable to send him you need not take
it as an indication that you are not properly taken care of; in fact,
in your own interest it might be better for him not to be on the
delegation, but this I say to you confidentially. He is undoubtedly
loyal to you but some of our other men might not be so if he were
there.
w;e have decided not to give the opposition any recognition at
all in either the State or Congressional reelegations.
Yours very truly

Dear Judge:-
I wrote you ,3omn days ago in reference to the report that
Ir. Lastinger was violating the injunction in the case of Duval against
Lastinger, but have heard nothing from you in regard to it. Please let
me k-LIcw whether or not he is doing so, if you feel it is cosistent
with your position as his attorney.
I see that your friend McTTaq n has co.n- out for ;7yc? for Governor,
and this but verifies his true position in regard to th! matter as I
told you some months ago.
Our Executive Committee has just met a~n- placed a restriction of
the payment of two poll tqxes on all democrats, to be paid before the
17th of April, before they will be permitted to partici-nate in nr .]inct
:netings. This is the first time that this has ever been reaoiired in
*k a precinct meetin- in this County, and shows to what desperate meas-
ur-s the opposition finds it necessary to resort. We expect, however,
to win, as the people are certainly with us.

My dear sir:-
Yours of the 6th inst. received, and I assure you that I am at a
loss to answer the sime, because I would like very much to be able
to give you definSte information as to the political condition in
this county. We as yet have no idea as to who will be the delegates,
otherwise we could very sson find out how they stood, but my candid
opinion is that our delegation will not be instructed as a unit, and
that the eight votes will be divided between Myers, Beggs and your-
self. You all have personal friends in this county who would like
to see each fill the Governor's chair. The Committee has not yet
decided on a day to hold our convention, but will probably have a
meeting in a few days and issue a call. I remain,
Yours very truly,

My dear Jennings,
I have yours of the 26th instant, and note what you say in
regard to the chairmanship of the State Conventi6n, but on due re-
flection, I have thought best not to undertake the fight for that
position. I fear that. I might arouse some antagonisms that might
do an injury. This conclusion, however, is not final, but I sug-
gest in the meantime that you look around for some one else. I
should be very glad to serve my friends, but think I had better
keep out.
By the way, when does your senatorial convention meet? Any
information you can give me as to the outlook for a senator from
that district will be appreciated.
Yours very truly,
