Dear John,

The proposal to hold our field school in St. Augustine sounds like a very
good idea to me. I've discussed it with the acting chairman and he has
approved.

We would not be able to hold the field school until the Spring Quarter,
March 27-June 2. Should you want to continue into the summer qua-er, we
would have to consider the various problems that would be involved in two
field schools.

As I discussed with Bob Steinbach, I would like to try for a grant from the
National Foundation for the Humanities. This would give us some hourly pay
for the students for food, etc. as well as odds and ends of money. Perhaps
we could get funds for a graduate assistant. While NSF no longer requires that
sponsors contribution be shown, I understand that Humanities does require
this. The project would presumably be sponsored by the university and your
board jointly. I think this would appeal to them.

For our part contributions would be basically $7,333.00 of my salary for one
quarter. We could also list use of our equipment but probably shouldn't try
to attach a price tag to it. Your contribution would be whatever you judge
would be equitable for housing, your supervision, miscellaneous supplies, etc.

My preliminary thinking of the request would be:

15 students for 10 weeks at $1.50/hour for 40 hours/week
Miscellaneous small tools and supplies
Mileage of truck
Possibly 1 graduate assistant, 1/3 time
2 1/2 months @ $350.00 month
Typing of report, etc.

If the university administers the grant they would need 50.19% of wages
and salaries as overhead. I suppose that if the Board administers, that
they might not charge overhead. Or perhaps you would like to do that.

If you can let me have some specific figures on
draft a grant proposal and have it cleared here
ought to get it rolling. Whether or not we get

I've just dumped a nice problem in Pete F4ust's lap. The Veteran's Adminis-
tration in St. Pete has let a contract to construct a building on a midden
and burial area.
Sincerely yours,
