RE: Revisions to Joaneda House Kitchen

Dear John:

I am writing to confirm decisions reached during our delightful luncheon meeting
with Mrs. Towers on 10 December. In addition to decisions definitely made, I am
including further recommendations of my own in order to expedite the work.

1. The kitchen shall be rearranged as indicated on the enclosed drawing. The
new plan is generally known as a "Corridor Kitchen". As we discussed, the avail-
able space is extremely limited, and we must all realize that the width of the
corridor between cabinets is the absolute minimum acceptable. Under the circum-
stances, I believe we have achieved the most reasonable scheme.

2. The Corning Ware cook top requested by Mrs. Towers is unfortunately too
large to fit in the available space. All parties agreed that the best solution
is to retain the 30" cook top and oven originally specified.

3. The equipment to be utilized in the kitchen shall be as follows:

(a) Refrigerator-Freezer

(b) Range and Oven

(c) Range Hood

(d) Dishwasher

(e) Food Center

(f) Future Portable Microwave
Oven

(g) Future Washer-Dryer
(stacked) not originally
specified.

Whirlpool EAT-19PM, 19.5 cu. ft. Icemaker
(Similar to that in the Villa Longa).
G. E. 30" Free-Standing Model J-309 as
originally specified.
G. E. Model JN31R, as originally spe-
cified.
G. E. Model GSD-281, as originally spe-
cified.
Nutone Model 262 Power Unit and Blender,
not originally specified. Provide 110-
volt power and locate at rear of top of
dishwasher.
Provide a 1lO-volt duplex outlet above
the base cabinet on the north wall and
above the dishwasher for this item.
Provide waste and hot and cold water sup-
ply in the north wall of the porch in the
location shown on the drawing. Provide
220-volt outlet for the dryer. All of
these services should be combined in a re-
cessed fixture similar to Guy-Gray Model

trical outlets will be considered ex-
terior and must be ground-fault inter-
rupted.

stainless steel.

Not required since refrigerator is ice-
maker type.

Not required; also provision of this item
would eliminate valuable base cabinet
space.

4. All cabinet work shall be laminated plastic covered, as specified. The use of
iron "H" hinges was not discussed at our conference, but I strongly recommend
that standard concealed pin hinges be utilized in order to simplify the already
cluttered space.

5. Kitchen countertop lighting will be accomplished by fluorescent strips under
cabinets where indicated. Mrs. Towers' notes infer that overhead lighting is
also desired. I suggest strip fluorescents be located behind valances above the
cabinets as shown on the drawings. Wiring of countertop fixtures must be extended
to accommodate the additional lights.

6. In a note received in this office on 15 December, Mrs. Towers requests that
all sheet vinyl where called for be Congoleum Peerless Cushioned Vinyl Janeiro
6551. I would like to note that the downstairs bathroom was originally designed
with a ceramic tile floor, and I strongly recommend that ceramic tile be installed.
During recent construction, the floor of the room we are using as the kitchen was
carefully examined, and evidence of tabby concrete was found. The finished sur-
face of this floor, therefore, will be tabby concrete rather than the wood called
for in the original drawings. However, there is no doubt that the cushioned sheet
vinyl would be far more pleasant on the feet than concrete, and I certainly have
no personal objections to providing it over the tabby.

Mrs. Towers has kindly offered to attempt to obtain kitchen appliances at whole-
sale prices. The simplest procedure is to obtain prices on the exact equipment
listed above. If a substitution is suggested, it must have the same electrical
and plumbing characteristics as specified and in no event be larger in any dimen-
sion than specified. I would very much appreciate any prices being forwarded to
John as soon as possible. The prices should be accompanied by an exact descrip-
tion or catalogue for the item.

If I have misunderstood any of our conclusions or if any of my suggestions re-
quire further discussion, please contact me as soon as possible in order that
construction not be delayed. _

Best regards,

Herschel E. Separd.
