Newest mule put into service


The last of ten towing locomo-
tives recently purchased from the
Mitsubishi Corp. of Japan was
officially put into service last
Wednesday during a brief cer-
emony at the - Gatun Locks,
bringing the total number of
Panama Canal "mules" to 75.
The additional locomotives will
give the Panama Canal Com-
mission more flexibility in per-
forming normal lockage opera-
tions and routine maintenance and
rehabilitation on existing locomo-
tives. They are also indicative of
the organization's dedication to
provide increasingly efficient tran-
sit service.
For the past 20 years, a number
of units within the Canal organiza-
tion have been coordinating their
efforts in the locomotive procure-
ment program. Working with the
Marine Bureau on the project were
members of the Storehouse Divi-
sion, who handled the procure-
ment and contracting, and of the
Engineering and Construction Bu-


reau, who did the inspecting.
Those most closely involved with
the operation and maintenance of
the locomotives-the machinists,
electricians, locomotive operators,
and engineers-also contributed a
number of ingenious ideas to
further improve the efficiency of
the locomotives.

of the Locks Division, opened the
informal ceremony by congra-


tulating Senzo lohara, Mitsubishi
General Manager in Panama, and
His Excellency Riozo Mogi, Ja-
panese Ambassador to Panama,
for the "technology and excellent
workmanship" of the new locomo-
tives. The quality of the finished
products and the teamwork shown
among different Commission units
were what made "the dream of
yesterday, the reality of today,"

ognizes and supports the recom-
mendations of the Convention on
International Trade in En-
dangered Species of Wild Fauna
and Flora. Panama has passed
several laws prohibiting the sale or
captivity of native animals without
a permit. These laws apply to all

types of animals, including birds,
reptiles, and exotic species such as
Panama's Golden Frog.
In an effort to protect Panama's
wildlife even further and to prevent
the gradual extinction of many
native species, the Bureau of
Renewable National Resources
(RENARE) required the registra-
tion of all wild animals kept as pets
by May 1, 1980. No additional
registrations have been issued
since that time, nor are any
expected to be granted in the
future. Previously registered pets
can be transferred to a new owner
by visiting the Parque Soberania
(formerly Summit Gardens).

An owner of a wild animal from
another country must obtain an
exit permit granted by an official
of the country of origin and a
health certificate issued by a
veterinarian of that same country
before the animal can enter
Panama.


All students who attended De-
partment of Defense Dependent
Schools (DODDS) during the
1981-82 school year under the
Panama Canal Commission's spon-
sorship provision for "grand-
fathered" students are reminded
that continuous enrollment should
be maintained in order to retain
this benefit.
The grandfatheringg" provision
extended continued education spon-
sorship in the Panama Canal
school system to those students
who were attending Latin Amer-
ican schools and chose to remain in
Panama Canal schools when the
merger of the former Canal Zone
schools took place in December of
1978. The grandfatheringg" pro-
vision also allowed for continued
sponsorship of certain other stu-
dents who were enrolled in the
Canal Zone schools on September
30, 1979, such as dependents of
religious workers, employees of
other non-profit organizations,
district dentists, contractors, ship-
ping agents, and emploNees of oil
companies. The sponsorship, for
"grandfathered" students ter-
minates with their graduation
.from high school except for
dependents' of religious workers,
district dentists, and those students
vWho elected to remain in Panama
Canal schools at the time of the
1978 merger. The latter categories
of students are also entitled to
sponsorship while enrolled in the
Panama Canal College.
In order for "grandfathered"
students to retain Commission
sponsorship, it is necessary that the
employment status of the student's
parent or legal guardian continue


Likewise, an owner of a wild
animal who plans to take the pet to
another country should be aware
of that country's import restric-
tions. The United States, for
example, prohibits the importa-
tion of pet monkeys, turtles of
certain sizes, and a number of
other animals.
U.S. laws also prohibit the
importation of certain types of
birds, such as songbirds. and
migratory birds, and require that
special procedures be followed
when importing other birds. To
export a bird from the Republic of
Panama into the United States, the
owner or an agent of the owner is
required to make a reservation at a
Pet Bird Quarantine Station in the
United States. He or she mustthen
obtain the proper health certificate
and export permits locally. This
can be done at the Corozal or
Mindi veterinary clinics, the
RENARE office in the former

categories and that continuous
enrollment be maintained by the
student. Continuous enrollment
for kindergarten through grade 12
started with the enrollment as of
September 30, 1979, and con-
tinued with the beginning to the
end of each consecutive school
year thereafter. For purposes of
attending the Panama Canal Col-
lege under Commission sponsor-
ship, the continuous enrollment
provision can be met only by
enrollment at the college no later
than the fall semester immediately
following graduation from high
school.

offer courses in Music Apprecia-
tion and Choral Singing. Classes
will be taught by Emolene E.
Traugh, an accomplished musical
artist and a former soloist with the
Georgia College A Capella Choir.

takes the stage
Bruce Quinn, who usually plays
the role of director of the Com-
mission's Office of Equal Oppor-

will play the leading character in
the Theatre Guild's production of

direct the musical, which is based
on Charles M. Schulz's widely read

Interior tour
The Valent Recreation Center is

A collection of paintings by
accomplished local artist Hide
Drew is on display in the show-

Lecture on snakes
Frank Robinson, Chief of the
Meteorological and Hydrographic
Branch's Operations Section, will
be giving a I-hour talk on the
poisonous snakes of Panama at 10
a.m. on Thursday, August 26, and
at the same time on Friday, August
27. in Room 10 of the Administra-
tion Building. The presentation is
open to all Commission employees
and will include training in first aid
for snake bites. Mr. Robinson
plans to illustrate his lecture with a
slide show and a display of local
snakes.


Skin care
Wisia Kaliszczak, a local cos-
metics expert, will be giving a
workshop on skin care in tropical
climates at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,
August 18, at the Valent Recrea-

New technology used to build up dike at disposal site


Dredges are a common sight in
Canal waters, and the fact that
they play a vital role in the efficient
operation of the waterway by
suctioning the sedimentation from
ihe channel floor is certainly no
secret. What is not so well known,
however, is what happens to the
sedimentation after it is dredged
up.
According to John Robinson,
supervisor-in-charge of the dredge
material disposal sites, the Com-
mission maintains eight disposal
sites-areas he graphically de-
scribes as "great, big mud lakes."
Surrounded by dikes to retain the
dredge material, these disposal
areas are strategically located
along the Canal to accept sedimen-
tation from different segments of
the waterway.
Mr. Robinson, who oversees
and regulates these sites for the
Dredging Division, explains why
their location is critical. "The
power of the dredge, the distance
between the dredge and the
disposal area, and the amount of
pipeline available to transport
dredged material are all limiting
factors in its disposal," he states.
The crucial Veldsquez disposal
site receives approximately 2 mil-
lion cubic yards of sludge every 3
years, from.the area south of the
Miraflores Locks to the Rodman
Pier. With a perimeter of about 2.9
miles, the dike is capable' of
retaining an enormous amount of
dredged material. It has been built


up many times to accommodate
additional material, and is now 35
feet higher than it was in 1942
when pumping began there. In
fact, the dike has been built up five
times just since 1970.
Work is again under way to
build up the dike, but this time the
process will be different. "The
conventional method of building
up a dike is to widen the base from
the outside and work up,"explains
George Berman, Foundation and
Soils Chief for the Engineering
Division. However, rather than
going about it in this manner at a
cost of about $1.5 million, he
decided to use new technology to
complete the project at about half
the cost.
The new technology referred to
is the use of geotextiles-fabrics
with the strength of plastic and the
permeability of cloth. Through the
use of geotextile sheets, the Velas-
quez Dike is being built up from
the inside, rather than from the
outside, using the hydraulic fill, or
spoil material, as a foundation.
Mr. Berman reports that although
hydraulic fill is one of the poorest
foundation materials imaginable,
the permeability of the geotextile
sheets will allow water to seep out
of the fill and air to seep in, making
for a drier and firmer foundation.
Rock fill is being stacked on top
of the geotextile sheets to build up
the dike. During the first stage, a
layer of rock fill 4 feet high will be
placed around the entire perimeter

of the dike. The pressure exerted
by the weight of the rocks will
squeeze a substantial amount of
water out of the hydraulic fill
through the geotextile sheets,
stabilizing the foundation for the
second stage when an additional 3
feet of rock fill will be added.
According to Mr. Berman, placing
the entire 7 feet on at one time
would create too great a load on
the weak foundation material
below, and might cause the dike to
sink into the hydraulic fill.
In addition to the geotextile


sheets, special drains are being
used to stabilize the foundation
material. Mike Drennan, the en-
gineer who suggested their utiliza-
tion, explains why. He points out
that the heaviest sedimentation
remains close to the disposal site
intake, while the looser, finer
material makes its way to the lower
end, of the dike where the stability
is very poor. In this area spillways
have been installed to bleed off
excess water.
Because the spillways will have
to be removed while the dike is


being built up, the drains will be
installed to keep the water table
down and increase the stability in
the area during and after con-
struction. The spillways will be re-
installed before pumping opera-
tions resume in January.
Carl Simons, Public Works
General Foreman for the Main-
tenance Division, reports that a
combination of 70 percent rock
and 30 percent earth is being used
to build up the dike. The work is
being done under the supervision
of foreman Andr6s Castillo.


Panamanian Indian boatmen play crucial role in locks operations

A wide assortment of ships takes
advantage of the safe and efficient
transit service provided by the
Panama Canal to the international
maritime industry. Comparable to
the variety in vessels passing
through the waterway is the
diversity of the labor force that
operates and maintains the ocean-
to-ocean engineering marvel.-
Holding a wide range of posi-


tions within the Commission, the
Cuna Indians of the San Bias
Islands are among the many
groups contributing to the high
level of efficient operation of the
Canal. Four of these Panamanian
Indians-Jes6s Cantule Smith,
Ram6n Garrido, Ytiliano Fii6s,
and Claudio Morales-work at
Pedro Miguel Locks as boatmen,
or "urgui arbae" as they are called
in their native dialect.
Originally from the San Bias
Island of Ustupo, Mr. Cantule has
the most experience with nearly 17


years in his position. He explains
that the job requires them to row
out to the locks chambers with a
nylon line that is then tied to a
cable lowered by shipboard line-
handlers. A crew of two is assigned
to each boat-one to dothe rowing
and the other to handle the line.
The work performed by boat-
men is an essential part of
successful locking operations and
while it is not extremely difficult, it
can be somewhat dangerous at
times, especially when a vessel is
approaching the lock chamber.


Their tiny boat is at the mercy of
the suction and whirlpool gen-
erated by the ship's huge pro-
pellers, and they must be careful
not to let themselves get tangled in
the line they are handling.
Ram6n Garrido, a native of
Play6n Chico, has been a boatman
for the last 6 years. He has also
worked for the Canal organization
as a linehandler at the Balboa
docks for 5 years and as a freight
house stevedore for 3.
Ytiliano Fil6s and Claudio
Morales have a lot in common.


Besides both being from the island
of Nargana, they have been
working together for over a
quarter of a century. Starting their
careers with the Canal organiza-
tion as stevedores in Cristobal,
they were later employed as grass
cutters at Mount Hope before
becoming boatmen at Pedro Mi-
guel Locks.
These native Panamanian In-
dians are a small part of the Canal
organization's labor force playing
a big role in the efficient operation
of the waterway.

Inicia servicio una nueva mula


La 6ltima de diez locomotoras
de remolque adquiridas reciente-
mente de la Mitsubishi Corp. del
Jap6n comenz6 a prestar servicio
oficialmente el pasado mi6rcoles,
durante una breve ceremonia
efectuada en las Esclusas de
Gatdn. Con ella aumenta a 75 el
ndmero de mulas mecanicas con
que cuenta el Canal de Panama.
Las nuevas locomotoras permi-
ten a la Comisi6n del Canal de
Panama una mayor flexibilidad
para el desarrollo de las operacio-
nes regulars de esclusaje y para
realizar las tareas rutinarias de
mantenimiento y rehabilitaci6n de
las locomotoras. Su adquisici6n
confirm el permanent interns de
la organizaci6n de prestar un
servicio cada vez mas eficiente a las
naves usuarias de la via acuatica.
Durante los iltimos 20 afios,
diversas dependencias de la orga-
nizaci6n del Canal han estado
coordinando esfuerzos dentro del
program para la adquisici'6n de
las locomotoras. Funcionarios de
la Division de Almacenes encar-
gados de adquisiciones y contratos
trabajaron estrechamente en este


proyecto con la Direcci6n de
Marina y con la Direcci6n de
Ingenieria y Construcci6n, que
tuvo a su cargo la inspecci6n de las
mulas. Y aquellos.empleados mas
directamente vinculados con la
operaci6n y mantenimiento de las
locomotoras, como son los mecA-
nicos torneros, los electricistas, los
operadores de locomotoras y los
maquinistas, tambi6n contribuye-
ron con ideas ingeniosas a mejorar
la eficiencia de las locomotoras.


La ceremonia informal fue
abierta por el Jefe encargado de la
Division de Esclusas Carlos Alva-
rado, quien felicit6 al Gerente
General de la Mitsubishi en
Panama Senzo lohara, y al Emba-
jador del Jap6n en Panama S.E.
Riozo Mogi, por la alta "tecnolo-
gia y la excelente capacidad" de las
nuevas locomotoras. Dijo el Sr.
Alvarado que la calidad del
product entregado y el trabajo en

La Rep6blica de Panama man-
tiene la plena vigencia de las
recomendaciones contenidas en la
Convenci6n sobre Comercio Inter-
nacional de Especies de la Flora y
la Fauna Silvestre en Peligro de
Extinci6n. A ese efecto, Panama
ha promulgado una series de leyes
que prohiben la venta o cautiverio
de animals natives sin el debido
permiso. Estas leyes se aplican a


todo tipo de animals, incluyendo
aves, reptiles y species ex6ticas
tales como la Rana Dorada.
En un esfuerzo por proteger ain
mas la fauna silvestre y para evitar
la gradual extinci6n de muchas
species nativas, el gobierno pana-
mefio emiti6 un decreto que exigia
el registro de todos los animals
silvestres tenidos como domesticos
al 10 de mayo de 1980. No se han
hecho registros adicionales desde
entonces, ni se espera que se
concedan mas permisos en el
future. Aquellos previamente re-
gistrados pueden ser transferidos a
un nuevo duefio Ilenando los
tramites del caso en el Parque
Nacional Soberania (antiguos Jar-
dines de Summit).
El duefio de un animal proce-
dente de otro pais debera obtener
un permiso de salida otorgado por
un funcionario del pals de origen y
un certificado de salud firmado
por un veterinario de ese pais,
antes de que el animal pueda
ingresar a Panama.
De la misma manera, el duefio
de un animal silvestre que desee


Se recuerda a los estudiantes que
dieron classes en las Escuelas para
Dependientes del Departamento
de Defense (DODDS) durante el
afio escolar 1981-82 bajo la estipu-
laci6n de auspicio de la Comisi6n
del Canal de Panama, que la
matricula continuada es de rigor
para retener tal beneficio.
La disposici6n de retenci6n de
beneficio hizo possible el patrocinio
de una educaci6n continuada en el
sistema escolar del Canal de
Panama a estudiantes que asistian
a las Escuelas Latinoamericanas, y
que eligieron seguir en escuelas del
Canal de Panama cuando se dio la
fusi6n de las escuelas en la Zona
del Canal en diciembre de 1978. La
estipulaci6n aludida tambi6n per-
miti6 mantener el auspicio para
otros tipos de estudiantes matricu-
lados en escuelas de la antigua
Zona del Canal al 30 de septiembre
de 1979, tales como dependientes
de trabajadores religiosos y em-
pleados de organizaciones no-
lucrativas, dentistas del area, con-
tratistas, agents navieros y em-
pleados de compafiias petroleras.
El auspicio de estudiantes ter-
mina al graduarse estos de la
escuela secundaria, con excepci6n
de los dependientes de trabajado-
res religiosos, dentistas del area, y
aquellos que eligieron mantenerse
en las escuelas del Canal de
Panama al moment de la fusi6n
de 1978. Esta categoria de estu-
diantes tambi6n tiene derecho a
auspicio cuando se matriculen en
la Universidad del Canal de
Panama.
Para que los estudiantes reten-
gan el derecho al auspicio de la
Comisi6n, se hace necesario que el
status de empleo de los padres o
acudientes del estudiante se man-
tenga dentro de una de las


levar su animal dom6stico a otro
pais debera conocer las restriccio-
nes de importaci6n de ese pais. Los
Estados Unidos, por ejemplo,
prohiben la importaci6n de mo-
nos, tortugas de determinado
tamafio, y una variedad de otros
animals.
Prohiben igualmente las leyes de
los Estados Unidos la importaci6n
de ciertos tipos de aves, tales como
las cantoras y las migratorias, y
exige que se sigan procedimientos
especiales cuando se importen
otros pajaros. Para exportar un
ave de la Repiblica de Panama a
los Estados Unidos, el duefio o su
agent debera reservar cupo en la
Estaci6n de Cuarentena de Aves
Dom6sticas en los Estados Unidos.
La persona debera obtener local-
mente el correspondiente certifi-
cado de salud y permisos de
exportaci6n. Esto se puede hacer
en las clinics veterinarians de
Corozal o Mindi, las oficinas de
RENARE en la antigua Escuela
Secundaria de Paraiso, o en la sede
del Ministerio de Desarrollo Agro-
pecuario (MIDA). Todas las aves

categories elegibles y que el
estudiante se mantenga matricula-
do. La matricula continuada para
el kindergarten hasta el duod6cimo
grado comenz6 con la matricula al
30 de septiembre de 1979, y sigui6
desde entonces desde el inicio
hasta el final de cada afio escolar.
Para asistir a la Universidad del
Canal de Panama bajo auspicio de
la Comisi6n, la estipulaci6n de
matricula continuada (nicamente
puede cumplirse mediante ma-
tricula en la universidad a mas
tardar el semestre de otoiio inme-
diatamente despu6s de la gradua-
ci6n de la escuela secundaria.
Con la cercania de la fecha de
apertura del aio escolar 1982-83, y
porque la matricula continuada es
un requisite para el auspicio de la
Comisi6n, se recomienda a los
estudiantes con derecho a retener
el auspicio y a sus padres o
acudientes que mantengan la ma-
tricula a nivel pre-universitario od

Aplican nueva tecnologia para dique en sitio de disposici6n


Es cosa com6n y corricnte ver
dragas en las aguas del Canal; y el
hecho de que jueguen un papel
vital en la eficiente operaci6n de la
via acuatica removiendo los sedi-
mentos que hay en el fondo del
Canal, tampoco es secret para
nadie. Lo que no es muy conocido
es a d6nde va a parar esa
sedimentaci6n.
John Robinson, supervisor en-
cargado de los sitios de disposici6n
del material dragado, sefiala que la
Comisi6n mantiene ocho de estos
sitios de disposici6n, que 1 descri-
be grAficamente como "enormes
lagos de lodo". Estos sitios. que se
hallan rodeados por diques para
retener el material dragado, estin
estrat6gicamente ubicados a lo
largo de la ruta del Canal para
recibir el sedimento de los distintos
segments de la via acuAtica.
El Sr. Robinson, quien supervi-
sa y regular estos sitios para la
Division de Dragado, explica por
qu6 su ubicaci6n es critical. "La
potencia de la draga, la distancia
entire la draga y el Area de
disposici6n, y la cantidad de
tuberia disponible para transpor-
tar el material dragado, constitu-
yen factors limitantes para su
disposici6n".
La important Area de disposi-
ci6n Velasquez recibe aproxima-
damente 2 millones de yards
c6bicas de lodo cada 3 afios, del
Area localizada entire el sur de las
Esclusas de Miraflores y el Muelle
de Rodman. El dique tiene un
perimetro de unas 2.9 millas y
puede retener una enorme canti-
dad de material dragado. Ha sido
reacondicionado varias veces para
acomodar material adicional, y


actualmente es 35 pies mas alto que
en 1942 cuando comenz6 a utili-
iarse como Area de disposici6n. Es
mas, el dique ha sido reacondicio-
nado cinco veces desde 1970.
Nuevamente se esta reacondi-
cionando, pero esta vez el process
sera distinto. "El m6todo conven-
cional de elevar un dique es
ampliar la base desde afuera y
trabajar hacia arriba", explica
George Berman, jefe de Fundacio-
nes y Suelos de la, Divisi6n de
Ingenieria. Sin embargo, en lugar
de hacerlo de esta manera a un
cost aproximado de $1.5 millo-
nes, se decidi6 usar una nueva
tecnologia para ejecutar el proyec-
to a casi la mitad del cost.
La nueva t6cnica comprende el
uso de geotextiles, material que
tiene la fuerza del plastico y la
permeabilidad de la tela. Mediante
el uso de estas laminas geotextiles,
el Dique Velasquez estA siendo
levantado desde dentro, en lugar
de desde afuera, utilizando el
relleno hidraulico o material dra-
gado como una fundaci6n. El Sr.
Berman informa que a pesar de
que el relleno hidrtilico es uno de
los mas pobres materials de
fundaci6n imaginables, la per-
meabilidad de las lAminas geo-
textiles permitira que se filtre el
agua y que el aire ocupe su lugar,
logrindose asi una fundaci6n mas
seca y firme.
Se colocarA un relleno de roca
sobre las liminas geotextiles para
elevar el dique. Durante la primera
etapa, una cama de roca de 4 pies
de alto cubrira todo el perimetro
del dique. La presi6n ejercida por
el peso de las rocas sacarA una
cantidad substantial de agua del

relleno hidraulico a trav6s de las
liminas geotextiles, establilizando
la fundaci6n para la segunda
etapa, en que se vaciaran 3 pies
adicionales de roca. Segin el Sr.
Berman, vaciar la totalidad de los 7
pies de roca de una sola vez, crearia
demasiado peso sobre el d6bil
material de fundaci6n que se
encuentra debajo, y podria provo-
car el hundimiento del dique
dentro del relleno hidrAulico.
Ademas de las liminas geo-
textiles, se estan utilizando drena-
jes especiales para estabilizar el
material -de fundaci6n. Mike


Drennan, el ingeniero que reco-
mend6 su utilizaci6n, explica la
raz6n indicando que la sedimenta-
ci6n mas compact permanece
cerca del tragante del sitio de
disposici6n, en tanto que el
material mas suelto y fino sigue
camino hacia el fondo del dique,
donde la estabilidad es muy pobre.
Se han instalado vertederos en este
sector para eliminar el exceso de
agua.
Debido a que los vertederos
tienen que ser removidos mien'tras
se esti elevando el dique, se
instalaran drenajes en su lugar


para mantener el agua en su mis
bajo nivel e incrementar la estabi-
lidad en el Area durante y despu6s
de la construcci6n. Los vertederos
seran reinstalados antes de reanu-
dar las operaciones de bombeo en'
enero.
Carl Simons, Capataz General
de Obras Piblicas de la Divisi6n
de Mantenimiento, informa que se
esta usando una combinaci6n de
70 por ciento de roca y 30 por
ciento de tierra para elevar el
dique. El trabajo se esta realizandb
bajo la supervision del capataz
Andr6s Castillo.


Boteros cunas jueganimportante papel en operaci6n de las esclusas

En espafiol se les llama hotero.
En el dialecto de los cunas se les
conoce como urgui arhae. Pero
digase como se diga, la funci6n es
la misma.
Lo que realmente importa es el
hecho de que natives de la
Comarca de San Bias forman parte
de un mosaico human que
contribute con el desempeflo de
sus respectivas ocupaciones al
mantenimiento del alto nivel de

eficiencia en la operaci6n del
Canal de PanamA; integraci6n de
hombres y mujeres que es tan
diverse como la variedad de
banderas y de embarcaciones que
transitan esta maravilla de la
ingenieria.
Cuatro de estos aborigenes
panamefios-Jes6s Cantule Smith,
Ram6n Garrido, Ytiliano Fil6s y
Claudio Morales-laboran en las
Esclusas de Pedro Miguel como
boteros. Cantule Smith, originario
de la isla de Ustupo, es el mis
experimentado del cuarteto, con
casi 17 afios dedicados ya a la
actividad. Explica que su trabajo


require trasladarse en un bote de
remos a las cAmaras de las esclusas
con una cuerda de nil6n que luego
se ata al cable que les tiran los
pasacables. La tripulaci6n de cada
bote es de'dos personas, una que
rema y la otra que trabaja con la
cuerda.
La labor que realizan los boteros
es un aspect esencial de las
operaciones de esclusaje, y aunque
no es extremadamente dificil,
puede en ocasiones ser peligrosa,
especialmente cuando las naves se
aproximan a las cAmaras de las
esclusas. Su pequefia y frAgil
embarcaci6n estA prActicamente a


merced de la succi6n y el remolino
generado por las enormes hl6ices
de los barcos, y deben tener much
cuidado para no quedar enredados
con la cuerda que estAn ma-
nejando.
Ram6n Garrido, oriundo de
Play6n Chico, ha trabajado como
botero durante los 6ltimos 6 afios.
Tambi6n trabaj6 para la organiza-
ci6n del Canal como liniero en el
muelle de Balboa durante 5 aios, y
como estibador en la aduana otros
3 aflos.
Ytiliano Fil6s y Claudio Mora-
les comparten much en comun.


Ambos son natives de la isla de acuatica.


NarganA y vienen trabajando
juntos durante mas de un cuarto de
siglo. Ambos iniciaron sus respec-
tivas carreras con la organizaci6n
del Canal como estibadores en
Crist6bal, pasando luego a traba-
jar en el mantenimiento de predios
en Mount Hope, y ahora como
boteros en las Esclusas de Pedro
Miguel.
Estos indios aborigenes pana-
mefios son apenas una pequefia
parte de la fuerza laboral de la
organizaci6n del Canal que de-
sempefia important papel en la
eficiente operaci6n de la via

mejorar la capacidad del Canal de
Panama". Estas mulas adicionales
ayudarAn a la organizaci6n del
Canal a mantener su alto nivel
competitive frente a la demand de
la industrial maritima mundial,
continue diciendo.

Rolando Josephs, de la Divisi6n
de Ingenieria y quien vivi6 en el
Jap6n por casi 2 afios ejerciendo
las funciones de ingeniero residen-
te del proyecto, destac6 la "notable
confiabilidad" de las locomotoras
construidas por la Mitsubishi,
algunas de las cuales han estado en
servicio durante 20 afios. Al
clausurar la ceremonia, el Sr.
Joseplis dijo que durante su
estadia en el Jap6n y sus visits a
las muchas ciudades en donde se
fabricaron las parties de las loco-
motoras, qued6 muy impresiona-
do de la destreza de la fuerza
laboral japonesa y del orgullo y
