Road gives access to power line

The Humpty Dumpty Road, a
new, temporary road that cuts
through jungle and underbrush
opposite the Gatun Chinese Garden,
bears a whimsical name but serves a
very down-to-earth purpose: it solves
a tricky logistics problem for the
Atlantic Maintenance Branch.
For the past several dry seasons,


work crews from the Atlantic
Maintenance Branch and the Mount
Hope Field Electrical Office have
been making steady progress on
renovations to the support towers
for the trasisthmian power lines that
stretch from the Mount Hope
Substation to the Balboa Power
Branch Substation. The work in-
cludes replacing the existing trian-
gular-shaped cantilevers, the ex-

Honorary Public Service Awards to be presented today


Panama Canal Commission Hon-
orary Public Service Awards will be
given this morning to 21 service-
oriented individuals and organiza-
tions in recognition of their out-
standing contributions to Canal area
communities. The 10 a.m. awards
ceremony will be held, fittingly, in
the rotunda of the Administration
Building at Balboa Heights, where
the surrounding murals stand as a
monument to the dedication of those


who labored in the actual construc-
tion of the Panama Canal.
Since construction days, concern
over the quality of life here on the
Isthmus has led to consistent
improvements, both through the
Canal organization and through
individuals and groups who have
recognized needs and set about to
fulfill them. In 1970, the Canal
organization established a system of
Honorary Public Service Awards,


accompanied by gold; silver or
bronze medallions, to pay tribute to
such services. Nominations for these
awards come from civic, labor,
fraternal and religious groups and
from other federal agencies on the
Isthmus. They are reviewed by the
Incentive Awards Committee and
the recipients are then named by the
Panama Canal Commission Ad-
ministrator.
During the past 11 years, since the

manufacturers began to comply with
voluntary industry standards which
strengthened requirements for cir-
cuitry, components and flame resis-
tance of plastic material. However,
sets manufactured before that time
may still present electrical hazards
that could cause a fire.
Besides electrical problems, cover-
ing the ventilation openings on the
back of a television by placing it too
close to the wall or a piece of
furniture can cause excessive heat
buildup in the set resulting in
malfunction and fire.
Older sets with vacuum tubes tend
to produce more internal heat than
the solid-state models. The heat of a
fire inside of a television set may also
cause the picture tube to collapse
inwardly and then rebound, propel-
ling sharp pieces of glass out of the
set.
Spilling water and other liquids
into the television cabinet can also
cause a short circuit and start a fire,

Braniff keeps
Eastern Airlines will begin flying
Braniff routes on June'l. Under an
agreement reached by Braniff Air-
ways with Eastern Airlines and
approved by the Civil Aeronautics
Board (CAB), Eastern will operate
Braniff's Latin American routes for
one year beginning on June 1. Both
airlines are seeking CAB approval
on a separate agreement that would


tended portions of the towers that
support the power lines, with more
easily maintained post-type insulator
mountings. These new mountings
are expected to more effectively
withstand the weather, and local sea
air than the corrosion-prone, steel,
single members of the cantilevers.
The project is a long-range one, as
about 17 towers per mile cut a swath
across the Isthmus.
Seven towers at the Atlantic end
of the line were virtually inaccessible,
and after considering several pos-
sible methods of transporting crews
and equipment to the worksite, the
Atlantic Maintenance Branch "took
the bull by the horns," so to speak,
and cut a road directly to the site.
Cutting the road was, according to
General Foreman of Public Works
Charles Hinz, an interesting project,
as it wound over hill and dale,
through trees and dirt gulleys. Also,
there apparently used to be a
blacksmith's shop in the area, and
the bulldozer unearthed rusty horse-
shoes and nails, along with exposing
portions of old railroad track and
tower foundations. One worker even
found a coin dated 1853.
After several truck rides on the
road, Mr. Hinz began calling it the
S"Humpty Dumpty Road," he says,
"for obvious reasons." Although it's
tame by comparison to the sur-
rounding jungle, it is full of"humps"
and "dumps" and offers something
less than a smooth ride.
Erecting an actual road sign at the
road entrance, says Mr. Hinz, was
kind a joke. "I just wanted to inject a
little humor into the whole tedious
business of working on the support
towers," he says, "we've been
working some pretty long hours out
there." Credit for painting the sign
goes to Norman Pederson, main-
tenance mechanic general foreman.
With the sign, however, the road
became an enticing object of interest
to curious motorists. Traffic grew so
heavy (eight cars in one evening,
according to the Canal Protection
Guard at the site), that it was
necessary to erect a second sign
alongside the first, this one saying
"Do Not Enter!"
The problem, explains Mr. Hinz,
is that the road is impassable when it
rains, and the concern is that vehicles
may become mired in mud out in the
middle of nowhere. Should that
happen, neither "all the king's horses
nor all the king's men" would be able
to do much with the Humpty
Dumpty Road, and keeping it open
is critical to completing the job for
which it was built.

The Panama Canal Department
American Legion Auxiliary will hold
a public auction, beginning at 10
a.m. on Saturday, May 15, in the.
upstairs ballroom of the American
Legion Club in Fort Amador.
An abundance of goodies, in-
cluding a round-trip ticket to
Colombia via COPA, a Sony
Walkman headset, a Peruvian chest,
clothing, pocketbooks, overnight
bags from the airlines, novelties and
collector's items, will be auctioned
off by "Col." Paul Quackenbush.
Door prizes will be given out
throughout the day for those
present. The winner of the main
prize, a gold brooch from Singapore,
will not have to be present to claim it.

Egolf retirement party
A retirement party honoring-
longtime Atlantic-side resident Ro-
berta "Bobby" Egolf, recently retired
Marine Bureau Safety Officer, will
be held on Saturday, May 22, at the
Fort Gulick Officers' Club. With a
pay-as-you-go bar, plans include a
cocktail hour from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
followed by a steamship roast
dinner.

The Defense Property Disposal
Office-Panama will conduct a spot
bid sale on Tuesday, May 18, at
Building 745 in Corozal. Some of the
featured items will be air-con-

Prospective buyers may inspect
the property from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m..

Chess tournament
A United States Chess Federation
(USCF) tournament will be held at
the Valent Recreation Center on
May 8 and 9. Participants must
register by 12:15 p.m. on Saturday,
May 8, and the contest will begin
shortly thereafter. On May 9 the
competition will begin at noon.
The tournament is open to all
USCF members, and non-members
will be given the opportunity to join
at the time of registration. A small
registration fee will be charged for all
participants, and awards will be
presented'to the winners.

"A Taste of Panama"

Canal sign painter talented artist 1 L

Whether he's on the job at the
Atlantic Maintenance Branch sten-
ciling signs or at home,, brush and
palette in hand in front of an artist's
easel, Augusto Garc6s Urriola deftly
puts to use a creative talent he
believes he was born with.
Born and raised in Colon and now
living in Pilon, a small town near
Sabanitas off the Transisthmian
Highway, he has worked for the
Panama Canal Commission as a
sign painter for the past seven years.
Products of his handiwork can be
seen throughout Atlantic-area Com-
mission facilities, anywhere that
safety regulations, hours of opera-
tion and other important infor-
mation for'employees or the public
are displayed.
While Mr. Garc6s enjoys his work
as a sign painter, his first love is the
painting he does on canvass during
his off-duty hours. He says, "My
painting i.s like -an escape to
liberty-with it I always feel free."
Holding down a regular job, how-
ever, liberates him in another way, he
admits. A biweekly paycheck re-
leases him from the pressures that
befall artists who must rely on sales
of their art in order to survive.


This is not to say Mr. Garc6s has
difficulty in selling his work. On the
contrary, an original Garces today
commands a high price.
During a recent art show at the
Hotel Washington in Colon, he sold
six canvases for an impressive
$5,000, and he has put a price tag of
$15,000 on his well-known painting
entitled "Viejo Picaro" (which means
womanizing old man). He explains,
"It's my masterpiece and it is also
very famous in Panamanian art
circles."
The painting, a portrait, depicts an
old, thin black man with a scraggly
white beard and a wild, untamed
head of hair. He's sitting in a pensive
pose squinting his devilish eyes, and
when one scrutinizes his beard,
profiles of the faces of two women
are revealed, loosely formed by the
hair of the beard itself.
As a Panamanian artist of con-
siderable recognition, Mr. Garc6s
has exhibited his art locally on
numerous occasions, both in one-
man shows and in company with
other artists. He has held shows at
the Historical Museum, the Art and
Cultural Center, the Municipality of
Panama, and the House of Art, all in
Panama City, as well as exhibiting
throughout Central America. He


says he feels especially proud to have
had success in Mexico because the
proliferation of accomplished artists
in Mexico usually makes it difficult
for a foreigner to gain a foothold.
Although he has been painting
and sketching since he was a youth,
he also studied painting at the
Washington School of Art in New
York, with additional study in
Colombia and Mexico. He says that
when he paints, it is important that
he keep his mind quiet and at peace,
adding, "When your soul is angry, it
shows in your work."
Mr. Garc6s' style on canvass defies
categorization, for he paints sym-
bolic figurative pieces along with
ventures into naturalism or the
classical mode. A poem he once
wrote explains the variety in his art:
"I paint nature
because I love its beauty,
I paint humanity
because I believe in it;
but when in my soul
that inspiration is born,
that feeling,
then I mold
in figurative form
all that I sense inside."
He has at times been criticized by
his peers for lacking a definitive style

all his own, but he believes he paints
what is right for him at the time and,
as such, is demonstrating his own
style.
Mr. Garc6s and his wife Edith,
who is Mexican and a painter in her
own right, have two small daughters,


two-year-old Yamillette and Sus-
sette, who is eight months. Finding
,space in their tiny apartment for two
artists to work is at times tricky, but
as Mr. Garc6s explains, "When you
like something, you don't care where
you do it."

Everyone has heard of the ex-
pression to "paint oneself into a
corner," but Carlos J. Barberena, a
Maintenance Division painter, was
recently called upon to turn: the
tables and; paint the division out of a
corner.
During-a recent remodeling of the
division's conference room, car-
penters found themsejyes with in-
sufficient - paneling t, cover 'the
conference room dbor, so' the
talented craftsman was called in and
asked if he could .salvage the
situation.
Taking brush in hand, Mr.
Barberena eagerly set to work
applying his artistry to the unpaneled
surface with such remarkable skill
that it is now difficult to distinguish
where the paneling ends and the
paint begins.
According to Mr. Barberena. the


job required several coats of paint-
a beige coat for a base, a thin coat of
dark paint to imitate the wood grain,
another coat to give the metal
surface a. wood-like color and,
finally, a sealer. Using this technique,
he explained, it is possible to
simulate any, kind of wood finish on
a wide variety of surfaces, and he
said that he is often called upon to
change the appearance of wooden
furniture to make it blend in with the
decor of a room.
Originally from Nicaragua, where
he learned his craft, Mr. Barberena
worked for several years there and in
Panama City before beginning his
20-year career with the Panama
Canal organization. He is married to
Natilda Pineda de Barberena of
Panama, and their son Rend Bar-
berena is also employed by the
Maintenance Division as a carpentry
worker.

When the Spanish conquistadors
sampled the flavor and succulence of
the papaya, they lost no time in
transporting it back to Spain for the
delectation of their sovereign. The
Spanish later encouraged the plant's
spread to and development in all the
areas of subsequent trade and
exploration involving the Spanish
government. But its delicious flavor
is not the papaya's only attribute.
Tenderizing meat by rubbing it
with papaya fruit or wrapping it in
papaya leaves has been a common
practice in tropical countries, and the
fact that it is the rich supply of the
protein-digesting enzyme papain
contained in the papaya that does
this tenderizing is now a widely
published fact.
Enzymes are fragile, lifelike sub-
stances in all living vegetable or
animal cells without which life could
not exist. Enzymes are used by the
body in the digestion of food as well
as having a role in the utilization and
storage of nutrients in the body.


But enzymes are only a part of the
papaya story. In addition to en-
zymes, papaya supplies a generous
measure of vitamin A, the eye and
skin vitamin that also aids in the
healing of wounds, and vitamin C
that helps us handle stress and is
believed by many to be utilized by
the body in the prevention and cure
of many diseases. Papaya also gives
us calcium, niacin, riboflavin and
thiamine, but in lesser quantities.
Papain for commercial use is
extracted from the milky juice of the
papaya's skin before the fruit ripens
by "scarifying" the skin-that is,
making incisions in it-with a
noncorrosive blade. The incisions
"bleed" the milky juice for ap-
proximately seven seconds, then the
juice begins to coagulate and the
wound to heal over. Both the
coagulation and the milky juice are
dried with hot air or in a vacuum,
free from dust or foreign matter. The
dried papain is then ground into a
powder, ready for compounding.

meat tenderizer in a saline-preser-
vative, since salt acts as a catalyst to
papain, speeding up its action. It is
an ingredient in medications to
alleviate digestive disorders and it is
also sold in tea form, in face cream,
in tooth powder and in a cleaning
agent for removing blood stains and
soft drink spots from wool. Used as a
curing agent in beer, papain has
reduced stabilization time from six
months to ten days.
Papain tea is said to have a spicy
odor and taste similar to Chinese
oolong. It is purported to aid
digestion and act as an appetizer,
and is particularly valued because it
contians no tannic acid. However, it
does contain a mild amount of
carpain, a heart stimulant. An
interesting sidelight of this tea has
been found to be that, if drunk
habitually with meals to the ex-
clusion of regular tea or coffee, it will
.eventually reduce a smoker's desire
to smoke.
Papain in face cream is reported to
be an excellent cleanser and skin
softener, and even rubbing raw
papaya juice on the skin is said to be
beneficial in fading freckles and
other sun blemishes.
In tooth powder, papain is said to
have a healing effect on abraisions of
the teeth and gums, as well as
digesting food particles clinging to
the teeth.
As a wool-cleaning agent, papain
does not weaken or break the fiber
but has a softening and revitalizing
effect.
Grown from seed, papaya plants
develop rapidly and often produce
fruit before the end of the first year.
Individual fruits have been known to
weigh as much as 25 pounds.
While the versatile papaya can be
used in many ways-you can drink it
as tea, rub it on your skin, sprinkle it
on your meat, brush your teeth with
it or even clean your clothes with
it-most people seem to prefer to eat
it, just as it is, peeled and seeded and
with just a squeeze of lime juice.

as well as present a danger of shock.
Shocks can occur when a person
touches television parts that carry
hazardous voltages even when the set
is unplugged.
To guard against these hazards,
certain safety precautions should be
followed. The television should be
turned off if it is necessary to leave
the room for a long period of time.
When leaving on vacation, it is
necessary to unplug the television
and disconnect the external antenna
lead-in wires in case of lightning
storms and electrical power line
surges that could cause a fire. When
unplugging a television, a person
should hold the plug, not pull on the
cord, which could cause fraying.
.Dropping or pushing objects into
the television cabinet presents a real
danger of electrical shock. People
should never touch the television
controls or antenna with wet harids
or while touching' water. To insure


against such an accident, a television
should never be brought into the
bathroom or placed where it can be
reached from the kitchen sink or
other water source.

Care must be taken not to expose
the television to rain or water. If the
television does become'damp, pull
the plug and have it inspected by a
service representative before further
use. Moisture can cause electrical
shorts leading to fire or shock.

If a television makes loud or


continuous snapping or popping
noises, it should be unplugged and a
service technician called. A worn or
brittle cord should also be checked
and replaced if necessary.
In the event that a fire does start in
the television, pull the plug im-
mediately. Everyone should leave
the house and the fire department
should be called. If the fire is small, a
dry chemical fire extinguisher can be
used, but never attempt to put out a
television fire with water unless the
set is unplugged.

Defective oven recalled


The Moulin-Air convection oven
has been found by the Army and Air
Force Exchange Services (AAFES)
Quality Assurance Laboratory to
pose an electrical shock hazard.

AAFES customers who have
purchased the Moulin-Air convec-
tion oven Model CTCO 300, made
by Moulinex, at an exchange or
through the AAFES Home Shop-
ping Guide are advised to stop using
the oven and return it to an exchange
for full refund.

which customers had received
shocks while using the oven. Tests
determined that an electrical shock
could occur if the user touched the
control knobs, oven door or rear
panel mounting screws and another
conductive surface, such as a metal
sink. -
If the oven is plugged in, the user
could receive a shock, whether or not
the unit is in operation. The oven
should be unplugged carefully,
avoiding contact with control knobs,
oven door and mounting screws.

Boy Scouts hold awards dinner tomorrow


Elwood M. McAllister, Assistant
National Director of the Boy Scouts
of America, will be the keynote
speaker at the Annual Awards and
Recogniton Dinner of the Panama
Canal Council. The dinner will be
held at the Fort Amador Officers'
Club beginning at 6:15 p.m. to-
morrow evening, Saturday, May 8.
The awards dinner is a once-a-
year opportunity for the council and
participating Scouters to show their
appreciation to those who have
contributed to the Scouting Pro-
gram. The highlight of the evening
will be the awarding of the Silver
Beaver for exceptional service to
Scouting over many years. A second
honor to be awarded will be "La
Orden del Espiritu de las Buenas


Obras," given by the council for
outstanding Scouting work on the
Isthmus.


Other awards to be presented are
the Honor Unit Awards, which are
presented to Scout units that have
met all Scouting objectives during
tle past year, and the Scouters
Award, given by the local council to
adult Scouters who have contributed
outstanding service. The council will
also use this opportunity to give
special recognition to those young
men who have achieved the rank of
Eagle Scout during the past year.

La Carretera "Humpty Dumpty",
nueva carretera provisional que se
internal por la selva y la maleza al
otro lado de la hortaliza china en
Gatfn, Ileva un nombre poco
com6n, pero sirve un prop6sito muy
concrete: soluciona el dificil proble-
ma de logistica para el Ramo de
Mantenimiento en el sector AtlAnti-
co.
Desde hace varias estaciones,


secas, cuadrillas de trabajadores del
Ramo de Mantenimiento en el sector
AtlAntico y la dependencia de la
Oficina Principal de Electricidad en
Mount Hope, vienen realizando
constantes adelantos en la renova-
ci6n de las torres de soporte para las
lines de energia el6ctrica transistmi-
ca que se extienden desde la
Subestaci6n en Mount Hope hasta
la Subestaci6n del Ramo de Energia
Elctrica en Balboa. El trabajo
incluye reemplazar las torres existen-

El Canal entregara premios por Servicios Publicos hoy


Los Premios de la Comisi6n del
Canal de PanamA por Servicios
PIblicqs seran otorgados en horas
de la mafiana del dia de hoy a 21
personas y organizaciones en reco-
nocimiento a sus contribuciones
sobresalientes a las comunidades del
area canalera. La ceremonia de
entrega de premios que se efectuard a
las 10 a.m. tendrA lugar, apropiada-
mente, en la rotonda del Edificio de
Adminiistraci6n en Balboa Heights,
donde los murales que la rodean


constituyen un monument a la
consagraci6n de aquellas personas
que han trabajado por lo que es hoy
el Canal de PanamA.
Desde la 6poca de la construcci6n
del Canal de PanamA, la preocupa-
ci6n por la calidad de vida aqui en el
Istmo ha conducido a la realizaci6n
de mejoras sostenidas, ya sea por la
organizaci6n del Canal o por
individuos y grupos que han recono-
cido las necesidades y han emprendi-
do la tarea de satisfacerlas. En 1970,


la organizaci6n del Canal estableci6
un sistema de Premios por Servicios
Piblicos, con medallas de oro, plata
o bronce, a fin de rendir tribute. por
estos servicios. Las postulaciones
para estos premios provienen de los
grupos civicos, laborales, fraternales
y religiosos, y de otras agencies
federales en el Istmo. Las postula-
ciones son revisadas por el Comit6 de
Premios por Incentivos y los nom-
bres de los merecedores son luego
anunciados por el Administrador de


Televisores pueden ser nocivos a su salud


Mirar television es una diversion
favorite para much gente; pero con
frecuencia los televidentes no tienen
conocimiento de los peligros involu-
crados en poseer y operar un
televisor, particularmente aquellos
percances potenciales del televisor
que pueden resultar en dafios a la
propiedad o aun causar la muerte.
La Comisi6n de Seguridad de
Products para el Consumo de los
Estados Unidos calcula que anual-
mente hay millares de incendios a


causa de televisores caseros, muchos.
debido a problems el6ctricos. Un
gran porcentaje de incendios de
televisores correspondent a televiso-
res portatiles a colors con muebles
plAsticos fabricados antes de 1976.
A fines de la d6cada de 1970, los
fabricantes de televisores comenza-
ron a cumplir con las normas
industriales voluntarias que ponen
6nfasis en los requisitos para el
sistema de circuitos, components y

material plastico. Sin embargo, los
aparatos fabricados antes- de esa
6poca pueden afn presentar peligros
el6ctricos que pudieran causar un
incendio.
Ademis de causar problems
el6ctricos, tapar las ranuras de
ventilaci6n en la parte trasera de un
televisor, colocindolo muy cerca de
la pared o de un mueble puede
causar una acumulaci6n excesiva de
calor dentro del aparato ocasionan-
do su mal funcionamiento y un
incendio.
Los aparatos mis viejos con tubos
al vacio tienden a producer mis calor
interno que los models de estado
s6lido. El calor de un incendio
dentro de un aparato de televisor
puede tambi6n causar que el tubo de
la imagen se caiga adentro y rebote
regando pedazos de vidrio puntiagu-
dos fuera del aparato.
Derramar agua u otros liquidos
dentro del mueble del televisor puede
tambi6n causar un cortocircuito e
iniciar un incendio, asi como
presentar el peligro de una sacudida
electrica. Las sacudidas el6ctricas
pueden ocurrir cuando una persona
toca ciertos lugares del televisor que
contienen voltajes peligrosos aun
cuando el aparato est6 desenchufa-

nen las lines de energia el6ctrica,
por postes con aisladores mis ficiles
de mantener. Se espera que estos
nuevos montajes resistan mAs las
condiciones atmosf6ricas y el aire
salobre proveniente del mar que
hacen las torres con volados de acero
propensas a la corrosion. El proyec-
to es de largo plazo, ya que hay
aproximadamente 17 torres' por
milla en toda una faja que atravieza
el Istmo.
Siete torres en el extreme AtlAnti-
co de la linea eran virtualmente
inaccesibles, y despu6s de considerar
various m6todos posibles para trans-
portar las cuadrillas y el equipo al
lugar del trabajo, el Ramo de
Mantenimiento en el sector AtlAnti-
co "agarr6 al toro por los cuernos",
como dice la clAsica expresi6n, y
abri6 una carretera directamente al
lugar.
Seg6n el Capataz General de
Obras Piblicas Charles Hinz, el
cortar la carretera fue un proyecto
muy interesante ya que hubo que
subir y bajar cerros, y pasar entire los
Arboles y barrancos de tierra.
AdemAs, aparentemente en una
&poca habia una herreria en el Area, y
los tractores niveladores desenterra-
ron herraduras y clavos oxidados,
junto con pedazos, de rieles, de
ferrocarril y bases de torres. Un
trabajador hasta encontr6 una mo-
neda de 1853.
Despu6s de varies viajes en
cami6n por la carretera, el Sr. Hinz
comenz6 a llamarlo el "Humpty
Dumpty Road", dice, "por razones
obvias". Aunque es apacible compa-
rada con la selva que la rodea, esta
Ilena de "lomitas" y "huecos"y ofrece
todo menos un paseo suave.
El instalar un verdadero letrero de
carretera, a la entrada de la carretera,
dice el Sr. Hinz, fue algo c6mico.
"S6lo queria darle un poco de humor
al tedioso asunto de trabajar en las
torres", dice. "Trabajamos muchas
largas horas alli". El m6rito por
pintar el letrero le corresponde a
Norman Pederson, capataz general
de mecanico de mantenimiento.
Sin embargo, con el letrero, la
carretera se convirti6 en punto de
interns para los curiosos automovi-
listas. El trafico aument6 tanto (ocho
carros en una noche, segfn el
Guardia de Protecci6n del Canal en
el lugar), que fue necesario poner un
segundo letrero al lado del primero,
este iltimo diciendo "No Entre".
El problema, explica el Sr. Hinz,
es que cuando llueve la carretera es
intransitable, y la preocupaci6n es
que los vehiculos puedan quedarse
atascados en el lodo lejos de todo. Si
esto ocurriese, ni "todos los caballos
ni todos los caballeros del rey"
podrian rescatarlos debido a las
condiciones de la Carretera "Hump-
ty Dumpty". Y el mantenerla abierta
es vital para terminar el trabajo para
el cual fue construida.


Braniff ofrece vuelos fletados


La Eastern Airlines comenzara a
volar las rutas de Braniff a partir del
10 de junio. Segizn acuerdo logrado
por la Braniff Airways con la Eastern
Airlines y aprobado por la Junta de
Aerondutica Civil (CAB), la Eastern
operara las rutas de Braniff en
America Latina durante un afo a
partir del IQ de junio. Ambas lines
buscan la aprobaci6n por la Junta de
AeronAutica Civil de un acuerdo
separado que abarcaria otros cinco


afios.

Airways han asegurado al Ramo de
Transporte que Braniff proporcio-
narA el servicio de los vuelos fletados
para el period de vacaciones a los
Estados Unidos. Se recuerda a los
empleados que proyecten utilizar los

SPILLWAY DEL CANAL DE PANAMA


El Canal cuenta con pintor talentoso

Ya sea que est6 en el trabajo en el
Ramo de Mantenimiento en el sector
Atlantico pintando letreros o en su
casa, con pincel y paleta en mano
frente a un caballete de artist,
Augusto Garc6s Urriola habilmente
pone a practice el talent creative
con el cual naci6.
Nacido y criado en Col6n, Garc6s
vive ahora en Pil6n, un pequefio
poblado cerca de Sabanitas a poca
distancia de la Carretera Transist-
mica. Ha trabajado para la Comi-
si6n del Canal de PanamA como
pintor de letreros durante los iltimos
siete afos. El resultado de su trabajo
puede verse por todas las instalacio-
nes de la Comisi6n en el sector
AtlAntico, dondequiera que se ex-
hiban los reglamentos de seguridad,
las horas de operaci6n y otra
informaci6n que sea de importancia
para los empleados o el p6blico.
Si bien el Sr. Garc6s disfruta de su
trabajo como pintor de letreros, su
gran amor es la pintura que pone
sobre el lienzo durante sus horas
libres. Dice, "mi pintura es un escape
a la libertad-con ella siempre me
siento libre". Sin embargo, desem-
pefiando un trabajo regular, lo liberal
de otra manera, admite. Un cheque
quincenal elimina las tensions que
aquejan a los artists que deben
confiar en las ventas de sus trabajos a


fin de sobrevivir.
Esto no quiere decir que el Sr.
Garc6s tiene dificultad.en vender sus
trabajos. Todo lo contrario; hoy dia
un original Garc6s tiene un alto
precio.
Durante una reciente exposici6n
pict6rica en el Hotel Washington en,
Col6n, vendi6 seis cuadros por la
impresionante suma de $5,000, y 61
ha puesto un valor de $15,000 en su
famosa pintura titulada "Viejo Pi-
caro". Explica, "es mi obra maestra y
es tambi6n muy famosa en los
circulos del arte panamefio".
La pintura, un retrato, describe a
un hombre negro, viejo y delgado
con una barba blanca desordenada y
una cabellera desarreglada y rebelde.
EstA sentado en pose pensativa
con una diab6lica mirada de reojo, y
cuando uno escudrifa la barba,
aparecen los perfiles de las caras de
dos mujeres, ligeramente formados
por el pelo de la misma barba.
Como artist panamenio de nota-
ble reconocimiento, el Sr. Garces ha
exhibido su arte localmente en
numerosas ocasiones, tanto indivi-
dualmente como en compafima de
otros artists. Ha presentado exposi-
ciones en el Museo Hist6rico, el
Centro Cultural y de Arte, el
Municipio de PanamA, y la Casa del
Arte, todas en la ciudad de Panama,
asi como por todo Centroam6rica.
Dice que se siente especialmente
orgulloso de haber tenido 6xito en


M6xico, debido a que la gran
cantidad de artists consumados en
M6xico usualmente lo hace dificil
para que un extranjero encuentre
apoyo.
Aunque ha estado pintando y
bosquejando desde que era nifio,
tambien estudi6 arte pict6rico en la
Escuela Washington de Arte en
Nueva York, e hizo studios avanza-
dos en Colombia y Mexico. Dice que
cuando uno pinta, es important
tener calma y paz. "Cuando su alma
esti enojada, se refleja en su trabajo",
afiade.
El estilo del Sr. Garc6s en los
lienzos desafia la categorizaci6n, ya
que pinta obras figurativas igual que
se introduce en el naturalismo o en el
estilo clisico. Una poesia que 61
escribi6 una vez explica la variedad
en su arte:

Su Sentir
"Pinto la naturaleza
porque amo lo bello.
Pinto la Humanidad
porque en ella creo,
pero cuando en mi alma
nace aquella inspiraci6n,
aquel sentimiento
entonces plasmo
en forma figurativa
todo lo que dentro siento".

En ocasiones ha sido criticado por
sus compaileros pot carecer de un
estilo definido propio: pero 61 opina

quien es mexicana y pintora por
derecho propio, tienen dos hijas
pequefias. Yamillette. de dos afos de

pequeio apartamento para que
puedan trabajar dos artists, a veces
ec un poco dificil, pero seglin explica
el Sr. Garces. "cuando a uno le gusta
algo. estA a gusto en cualquier lugar"r

Empleado realize obra de arte

QuizAs Carlos J. Barberena no sea
jugador de b6isbol. No obstante,
hace poco sus compafieros lo
Ilamaron como "bateador emergen-
te" y logr6 desempefiarse como lo
haria el mejor jugador. Solo que el
scenario no era un estadio, ni se
trataba precisamente de unjuego del
mas popular deported de los Estados
Unidos.
Durante la reciente remodelaci6n
del sal6n de conferencias de la
division, los carpinteros descubrie-
ron que no tenian suficientes panels
para cubrir la puerta del sal6n. De
manera que lUamaron como emer-
gente al talentoso artesano y le
preguntaron si podia salvar la
situaci6n.
Tomando la brocha, el Sr.
Barberena diligentemente inici6 la
tarea de aplicar su talent artistic a
la superficie sin panel con tan
incredible habilidad que es dificil
distinguir d6nde terminan los pane-
les y d6nde comienza la pintura.


Segfn el Sr. Barberena, el trabajo
requeria varias manos de pintura-
una mano de color beige como base,
una mano delgada de pintura oscura
para imitar la fibra de la madera,
otra mano para darle a la superficie
de metal un color de madera y,
finalmente, una capa de lacre.
Usando esta t6cnica, explic6, es
possible similar cualquier clase de
acabado de madera en una amplia
variedad de superficies, y dijo que
con frecuencia lo Ilaman para que
cambie la apariencia de los muebles
de madera a fin de que combine con
el decorado de la habitaci6n.
El Sr. Barberena, nacido en
Nicaragua, donde aprendi6 su ofi-
cio, trabaj6 alli various afios y en la
ciudad de Panama antes de iniciar su
carrera de 20 afios con la organiza-
ci6n del Canal de Panama. Esta
casado con Natilda Pineda, de
PanamA. Su hijo Rene Barberena
tambi6n esta empleado en la Divi-
si6n de Mantenimiento como traba-
jador en carpinteria.

Cuando los conquistadores espa-
fioles probaron el sabor y la
suculencia de la papaya, no perdie-
ron el tiempo en transportarla a
Espafia para el deleite de su
soberano. Los espafioles mis tarde
alentaron la propagaci6n y aprove-
chamiento de la plant en todas las
Areas comerciales.
El m6todo de ablandar la care
frotAndole papaya o envolvi6ndola
en las hojas del papayo ha sido una
costumbre muy comtin en los paises
tropicales. Hoy dia es ampliamente
conocido que la papaya es rica en
papaina, enzima que tiene la propie-
dad de actuar sobre las proteinas y
que es responsible del ablandamien-
to de la care.
Las enzimas son substancias
frIgiles y naturales que existen en los
vegetables o en las c6lulas animals sin
las cuales no podria haber vida. El
cuerpo usa las enzimas en la
digestion de los alimentos; pero ellas
tambi6n desempefian un papel im-
portante en la utilizaci6n y el
almacenamiento de los nutrients en
el cuerpo.
Pero las enzimas son solo parte


integral de la historic de la papaya.
Ademas de las enzimas, la papaya
proporciona una cantidad generosa
de vitamin A, la vitamin para los
ojos y la piel que tambi6n ayuda en la
cicatrizaci6n de heridas, y vitamin
C que nos ayuda a controlar la
tension y muchos opinan que es
utilizada por el cuerpo en la
prevenci6n y cura de muchas
enfermedades. La papaya tambi6n
nos da calcio, niacina, riboflavina y
tiamina, pero en pequefias cantida-
des.
La papaina para uso commercial es
extraida del jugo lechoso de la
cAscara de la papaya antes de que se
madure la fruta, haciendo hendidu-
ras en la cscara con un cuchillo no
corrosive. Las hendiduras hacen
"sangrar" el jugo lechoso por
aproximadamente siete segundos,
comenzando entonces a coagularse y
a cicatrizar. Tanto la porci6n
coagulada como el jugo lechoso son
secados con aire caliente o al vacio,
libre de polvo o material extrafia. La
papaina seca es entonces molida,
quedando lista para mezclar.
- Comercialmente, se vende la
papaina para suavizar la came en un
preservative salino, ya que la sal

reducido el tiempo de estabilizaci6n
de seis meses a diez dias.
Se dice que el t6 de papaina,es
aromatico y su sabor es similar al t6
chino. Se informa que ayuda en la
digesti6n y actia como un aperitivo,
y es particularmente valioso debido a
que no contiene Acido t6nico. Sin
embargo, si contiene una leve
cantidad de carpaina, estimullante
del coraz6n. Un interesante aspect
secundario de este t6 ha sido que, si
es tomado habitualmente con las
comidas hasta excluir el t6 o caf6
acostumbrado, finalmente reducird
el deseo de fumar de quienes fuman.
Se ha informado que la papaina
en la crema para la cara es un
excelente limpiador y suavizador de
la piel y se dice que aplicando eljugo
de la papaya en la piel es beneficioso
en hacer desaparecer las pecas y
tambi6n otras manchas.
En la limpieza de los dientes, se
dice que la papaina tiene un efecto
cicatrizante en las abrasiones de los
dientes y las encias, asi como
tambi6n ayuda a digerir las particu-
las de comida que se pegan a los
dientes.
Como agent limpiador de lana, la
papaina no debilita ni rompe la fibra;
mAs bien tiene un efecto suavizador y
revitalizante.
El papayo, que se reproduce de la
semilla de la papaya, crece rApida-
mente y con frecuencia produce
frutos antes de finalizar el primer
afio. La fruta en ocasiones Ilega a
pesar hasta 25 libras.
Si bien la versAtil papaya puede
usarse de numerosas maneras-se
puede tomar como t6, aplicar a la
piel, rociar en la care, cepillar los
dientes con ella o hasta lavar la ropa
con ella-la mayoria de las personas
prefieren comerla tal como es,
pelada y sin semillas, tan solo con un
poquito de jugo de lim6n.

Televisores pueden ser nocivos (VienedeIapdgina,1)


Para protegerse contra estos
peligros, se debera seguir ciertas
medidas de seguridad. Se debera
apagar el televisor si es necesario salir
del cuarto por un largo period de
tiempo. Cuando se va de vacaciones,
es important que desenchufe el
televisor y que desconecte los
alambres de la antena exterior en
caso de tormentas el6ctricas y de
exceso de corriente en la linea de
energia el6ctrica que pudieran causar
un incendio. Cuando desenchufe un
televisor, la persona deberd agarrar
el toma corriente, no halar el cord6n
que podria causar que se deshilache.
Dejar caer o introducir objetos en
el mueble del televisor present un
verdadero peligro de una sacudida
el6ctrica. La gente no deberd tocar
los controls del televisor o de la
antena con las manos mojadas o
mientras toca agua. A fin de evitar
esta clase de accident, nunca lleve
un televisor al bafio ni lo ponga


donde se pueda alcanzar desde el
fregadordela cocina u otra fuente de
agua.
Se ha de tener cuidado de no
exponer un televisor a la lluvia o al
agua. Si. se humedece el televisor,
desenchffelo y haga que lo examine
un representante t6cnico antes de
usarlo nuevamente. La humedad
puede causar cortocircuitos electri-
cos que pudieran ocasionar un
incendio o una sacudida el6ctrica.
Si un televisor hace ruidos de alta
intensidad, estallidos o crujidos
continues, debera- ser desenchufado


y lamar a un representante t6cnico.
Un cord6n desgastado o partido
deberd tambi6n ser revisado y
reemplazado si es necesario.
En caso de que un incendio se
inicie en el televisor, saque enseguida
el toma corriente. Todos deberdn
abandonar la casa y Ilamar al
departamento de bombers. Si el
incendio es pequefio, se podra usar
un extintor de incendio de un agent
quimico seco, pero nunca trate de
apagar un incendio de televisor con
agua a menos que el aparato est6
desenchufado.

Retiran horno defectuoso


El Laboratorio de Garantia de
Calidad de las Tiendas Militares del
Ej6rcito y de la Fuerza Aerea
(AAFES) ha descubierto que el
horno de marca Moulin-Air presen-
ta el peligro de producer sacudidas
el&ctricas.
Se avisa a los clients del AAFES
que hayan comprado el horno
Moulin-Air, Modelo CTCO 300,
fabricado por Moulinex, en una
tienda military o por medio del
CatAlogo AAFES Home Shopping,
que dejen de usar el horno y que lo
devuelvan a la tienda military donde
se les reembolsara el dinero.
Los t6cnicos del laboratorio de
garantia de calidad comenzaron a
efectuar pruebas despu6s de ser


informados sobre incidents en los
cuales los clients habian recibido
sacudidas el6ctricas mientras usaban
el horno. Las pruebas comprobaroni
que podia ocurrir una sacudida
el6ctrica si el usuario tocaba los
botones de control, la puerta del
horno o los tornillos de montaje en el
panel trasero y otra superficie de
conducci6n, como un fregadero de
metal.
Si el horno estA enchufado, el
usuario podria recibir una sacudida,
ya sea que la unidad est6 en
operaci6n o no. Se debera desenchu-
far el horno con much cuidado,
evitando contact con los botones de
control, la puerta del horno y los
tornillos de montaje.

Exploradores tendrdn cena el 8 de Mayo


Elwood M. McAllister, Subdirec-
tor Nacional de los Nifios Explora-
dores de America, sera el orador de
fondo en la Cena Anual de Premios
y Reconocimiento del Consejo del
Canal de Panama. La cena tendra
lugar mariana sabado 8 de mayo a
partir de las 6:15 p.m. en el Club de
Oficiales de Fuerte Amador.
La cena de premios es un event
annual que brinda la oportunidad al
consejo y a los Exploradores partici-
pantes de demostrar su agradeci-
miento a aquellas personas que han
contribuido al Programa de Escultis-
mo. El punto culminante de la
velada sera la entrega del premio
"Silver Beaver" por servicio excep-
cional al Escultismo durante muchos
aiaos. La segunda distinci6n que se
otorgara es "La Orden del Espiritu


de las Buenas Obras", que ofrece el
Consejo por trabajo sobresaliente en
escultismo en el Istmo.
Las otras distinciones que se
entregaran son: Premios de Honor a
la Unidad, que son otorgados a las
unidades de Exploradores que han

alcanzado todos los objetivos del
Escultismo durante el ltimo afio, y
el Premio de los Exploradores que
otorga -l consejo local a los
Explorado es adults que han con-
tribuido con un servicio sobresalien-
te. El consejo tambi6n aprovechara
la oportunidad para dar reconoci-
miento especial a aquellos j6venes
que han logrado el rango de "Eagle
Scout" durante el pasado afio.
Se extiende una cordial invitaci6n
a todos los amigos, patrocinadores y
familiares de los Exploradores y del
