Employee programmed to win contest

Many of us dream of making a
name for ourselves with a fas-
cinating, new idea, but Roger R.
Toledano, chief of the Refrigeration
and Air-Conditioning Branch in the
Panama Canal Commission's Main-
tenance Division, has seen that
dream become a reality.
Mr. Toledano has worked out a
computer program to determine, in
minutes, the amount of air-con-
ditioning needed to cool a building.
The program is designed to calculate
the sensible heat load and latent load
(due to people) with a computer
printout for three specific hours of
the day, in this case, 10 a.m., 2 p.m.
and 5 p.m. The computer goes
through 533 programmed steps to
complete the computation.
The program is fed into the
Hewlett-Packard 41CV basic hand-
held computer by means of eight
magnetic tapes, each of which passes
through the computer twice for an

the program, Mr. Toledano says that
the major cost was in time spent,
which he estimates at 24 to 32 hours.
He also had to buy the computer
printout paper and magnetic tapes.
"The paper was no small item by the
time I worked all the bugs out of the
system," he admits. "I had to do a
complete printout each time I made
a correction and each printout
involves yards of paper."
After perfecting the program, Mr.
Toledano tested it on several jobs
and then decided to enter it into a
contest for acceptance in the Hew-
lett-Packard User's Library Catalog
of Contributed Programs for the

no duplication of existing programs,
legibility, ability to perform sample

Fire Division to
transport LODs
As a result of the treaty require-
ment governing treatment at medical
facilities, the Panama Canal Com-
mission Fire Division, which pro-
vides emergency medical service in
the Canal area, announces that it will
begin transporting those persons
who will be treated at Panama
hospitals to facilities in Panama City
and Colon.
Serious life/ limb-threatening cases,
as determined by emergency medical
technicians on the scene, will con-
tinue to be transported to the closest
medical facility, regardless of eli-
gibility.
Line-of-duty injuries of an emer-
gency nature will continue to be
transported to the nearest medical
facility.


Health and Safety Director Col.
Ignacio Hernindez-Fragoso has
been named as the Panama Canal
Commission point of contact for the
rejuvenation of the Panama Canal
blood donor program. According to
Colonel HernAndez, the program is
essential if the necessary amounts
and types of blood are to be on hand
at Gorgas Army Hospital for
response to emergency situations.
"The Company/Government entity
used to have a thriving program," he
said, "and it is important that the

Compensation Act (FECA) (non-
U.S.-citizen employed prior to Oc-
tober 1, 1979) who sustained per-
formance-of-duty injuries prior to
April 1, 1982, should be aware that at
this time they are no longer eligible
for follow-up treatment and care at
MEDDAC facilities. In order to
insure that necessary follow-up
treatment is continued at .other
medical facilities, non-U.S. citizens
covered by FECA should contact the
Claims Branch at 52-3231 for
.guidance and further instructions.

Maj. J. Robert Manning, clinical
lab officer at Gorgas Army Hospital,
is the MEDDAC project officer who
will be working with Dr. HernAndez
and other Commission represen-
tatives to coordinate the program.
Asked what the difference was in
having the blood on hand in the
hospital as opposed to calling people
to come in and donate blood as
needed, Maj. Manning said that
even if they could reach the necessary
people on the spur of the moment
and they came down immediately
and gave blood, it would take six
additional hours to process the
blood for use. "During that time," he
added, "the patient could die."
Major Manning explained that
anyone 18 years of age or older cap
donate blood through this program
and that each donor can give blood
once every eight weeks. "This would
give us more blood than we could
store, however," he said. "If every
eligible military and civilian resident
in the Canal area would give blood
once each year, we would have more
than enough."

Tentative plans include use of. a
mobile unit with scheduled days in
various Canal work areas. Itineraries
for the mobile units will be published
when.they are established.

Cartagena-Bogota trip
A tour of Cartagena and Bogota is

city of Spanish colonial heritage,
modern tourist facilities and superb
beaches, it is also one of the oldest
cities in the Western Hemisphere.

for four days of shopping' and
sightseeing, returning to Panama On

4th Annual Methodist
Drama-Cantata
The Methodist churches of the
Panama Circuit are presenting their
annual drama-cantata, this year
titled "Moses and the Promised
Land."
Directed by Walter Jones, the
program has an ecumenical cast of
80 actors and a choir of 60 voices.
Performances are set for both the
Pacific and Atlantic sides of the
Isthmus.
Pacific-side presentations will be-
gin at 6 p.m. at St. Christopher's
Auditorium and are scheduled as
follows:
* Good Friday, April 9, under the
distinguished patronage of J. J.
Harrison, editor, The Sunday Re-
public.
* Holy Saturday, April 10, under
the distinguished patronage of Fran-
cisca de McQueen, founding mem-
ber and first matron of the Atlantic
home for the aged.
* Easter Sunday, April 11, under
the distinguished patronage of the
Right Reverend Lemuel B. Shirley,
Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of
Panama.
The performance on the Atlantic
side is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

sunrise service for residents of the
Atlantic side will begin at 6 a.m. on

Table tennis
tournament
Ping-Pong enthusiasts aged 9 and
over are invited by the Panama
Canal Commission Recreation Serv-
ices Branch to participate in a table
tennis tournament on Saturday and
Sunday, April 24 and 25, at the
Gatun Gym and the Red Barn in
Margarita.
The tournament is open to
Panama Canal Commission em-
ployees, Department of Defense
civilians, active duty military per-
sonnel and their dependents.
Competition will take place in
three age groups: Youths 12 years
old and under, teens aged 13 to 15
and persons aged 16 and over. In
addition to their own'age group,
participants may also compete in the
one immediately above.

meeting
The Panama Canal Atari copi-
puter-users group will meet from
10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday,
April 10, in the Conference Room of
the Gatun Community Center,
located on Jadwin Road.
There will be various computer
demonstrations until 1 p.m . when
the club business meeting will be
held. Additional demonstrations will
then follow until 3:30 p.m.
Home word processing and filing
systems will be featured along with
some new home entertainment
programs.
Pacific-siders who wish to come to

to the Community Center or may
make arrangements to be met at the

Prepared childbirth
The Balboa Armed Services
YMCA will offer a new six-week
prepared childbirth class beginning
April 13. Classes will meet on
Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m.
and will be bilingually instructed by
Cristina Caries. The LeMasse meth-
od will be followed and the
instructional film "The Story of Eric"
will also be utilized. Registration for
the course is now open at the Balboa
YMCA reception desk. For more

El Valle excursion
For a memorable experience, join
the Valent Recreation Center for a
day tour of El Valle on Sunday,
April 18. A visit to the celebrated'

attractions of the picturesque little

Although the horse show season
locally is now in its final phases,
excitement continues to reign as
riders throughout Panama prepare
to perform in the 15th Annual
Isthmian Show of Champions.
Presented by the Abou Saad Tem-
ple, this gala event will begin at 8:45
a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday,
April 24 and 25, and will, for the first
time in many years, be held at the
Gatun Saddle Club on the Atlantic
side.
Because riders must have placed
and accumulated points in previous
horse shows during the season in
order to be eligible to participate in


the show of champions, the two-day
proceedings promise to be highly
competitive. A stateside judge will be
on hand to preside over the English
and western events, which will
include jumping, equitation, western
riding and gymkhana.
On hand, too, adding to the
excitement, will be the Abou Saad
Temple clowns to thrill adults and
children alike with their antics.

Tickets, which can be obtained at
the gate, are $1 for adults and 50
cents for children and students.
Make plans now to come to the show
and cheer on your favorite riders.


Bread-baking workshop
The Valent Recreatipn Center will
offer a three-hour bread-baking
workshop at 10 a.m. on Saturday,
April 24. The basic bread-baking
techniques will be presented, with
special emphasis on whole grains.
The workshop will be held at the
center and those interested should
register in advance.
Jazz concert in
old Panama
A touch of the Old South in an
Old Panama setting may be enjoyed
at the Old Dominican Convent's
Flat Arch beginning at 8 p.m. on
April 14, when maestro Seth Rose's
jazz group appears there in concert.
This concert is the last in a series of
three sponsored by the XVII Pan
American Congress of Architects
with the purpose of bringing the old
section of Panama City back into the
community's cultural life.
Tickets for this nostalgic enter-

Chamber orchestra
concert
The Lazar Gosman Chamber
Orchestra will present the first
concert of the Panama National
Association of Concerts 1982 season

at the National Theater.
Organized in the United States
and made up of 15 soloist musicians,
most of whom are emigrants from
the Soviet Union, the group is under
the direction of the distinguished
Soviet violinist Lazar Gosman,
former director of the Leningrad
Chamber Orchestra. The current
Latin American tour is the group's
first trip outside the United States.
The evening's program will in-
clude the works of Mozart, Casals,
Tschaikovsky, Shostakovich, Stra-
vinsky and Dvorak. Ticket prices
range from $15 for preferred seats to
$2 for the gallery.

In rural areas cane juice

is made old fashioned way

From nature's bountiful pantry
we enjoy savoring the flavorful juices
of dozens of kinds of fruits and
vegetables-from apples and or-
anges to tomatoes and carrots and
including the "milk" of coconuts. A
beverage called "guarapo," the sweet,
watery liquid squeezed from stalks of
sugar cane, is popular in Panama,
especially in the rural areas.
In sugar mills in Panama, as well
as around the world, modern
equipment works swiftly and ef-
ficiently to extract the juice from raw
sugar cane. The squeezings, as we all
know, are processed into granulated
white and brown sugar, confec-
tioners' sugar, syrup and molasses.
The fibrous residue of the sugar
cane, called "bagasse," is further
utilized as fuel and for making paper,
various chemicals and plastics.
Squeezing "guarapo" from raw
cane is, however, another matter
altogether. Children delight in chew-
ing on chunks of cane to glean small
sips of the juice, but in order to reap
pitchers full, one needs something a
bit more sophisticated. Residents of
the more rustic rural regions of


Panama build and use a charming,
old-fashioned contraption known as
a "trapiche," which, loosely trans-
lated, means a sugar mill.
A "trapiche" consists of three large
rollers made of wood or wide-
diameter pipe which sit vertically and
are meshed both top and bottom
with roughly hewn gears. In order to
drive the geared rollers, the center
roller is attached from above to the
end of a crosswise length of a six- to
eight-inch log. At the outer end of
the log, cows are harnessed by their
horns and then are urged, through
wild shouts and gentle prods, to walk
'round and 'round the machine,
turning the gears, which drive the
center roller, which drives the other
two rollers, which squeeze the juice
from the cane.

Two people work at the rollers;
one feeds raw cane through two of
the rollers, the other twists and bends
the smashed fibers and forces them
back through the third and center
roller. A piece of cane might thus be
pushed and pulled through the
rollers three or four times until it
appears "dry," at which time the
limp, twisted pieces are hurled aside
onto a pile.

beneath the rollers catch the juice, or
"guarapo," as the cane is squeezed
and guide it into a carefully posi-
tioned container below.
Although some prefer to first
strain the "guarapo," it is actually
ready to drink on the spot. Depend-
ing on the type of cane that has been
used, yellow or white, the color of the
juice might range anywhere from
almost clear to light brownish. It
goes down smoothly, is not sicken-
ingly sweet, leaves little or no
aftertaste, and it is, claim those who
produce it. even quite healthful.

Locks Division linehandlers really know the ropes


A flag-festooned hilltop alongside
Gatun Locks was the site of some
high-spirited goings-on recently as
six locks linehandlers and boatmen,
'tw;teach' frdmn::MirafloTes, Pedro
Miguel and Gatun locks, par-
ticipated in the 27th Annual Line
Throwing Contest.
Having been exalted to contestant
status through a series of mini-
eliminations several weeks prior to
the big contest, each man in turn
competed in the three traditional
events of distance, height and
accuracy by hurling 125-foot lines,
weighted at one end with a "monkey
fist," rope wrapped around an eight-
ounce lead weight.
When it was all over, boatman
Juan T. Guti&rrez emerged, for the
second consecutive year, as overall
winner, clinching the traveling tro-
phy for Miraflores Locks for one
more year. Custom dictates that next
year's contest will be held on the
Pacific side at Pedro Miguel Locks.

Mr. Hamm is hoping to interest
some prestigious firm in marketing.

will be able to benefit from it and
improve their games.
The device is designed for both
right- and left-handed golfers and
may be used indoors, attached to the
legs of an ordinary chair, or
outdoors on the putting green.
Because it is compact and easily
dismantled, it may be transported
with facility in luggage or a golf bag.
After 20 years of service, Mr.
Hamm retired from the U.S. Army
as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1974.
Having been stationed here for a
two-year tour in 1956, he decided to
return in 1976 and has been
employed by the Canal organization
for over five years. "One factor in my
decision to return," reports Mr.
Hamm, "is that Panama is one of the
few places where I can play golf every
day, year-round."
Both on and off the golf course,
Mr. Hamm strives to treat people in
a manner in which he would want to
be treated. When not at work, he can
usually be found on his home green
at Fort Amador or relaxing in his
"other home" in Balboa with his
charming wife, the former Agnes
Williams of Colon, and his two
children, Teresa, 15, and Purvis Jr.,
14.

feelings about the project at the time
he began it.
According to Mr. Toledano, the
project has been a learning ex-
perience for him. "I entered the
contest primarily to prove that I
could get the program published," he
says. However, there was the added
incentive of a first prize-a full-
blown computer worth $2,000 or
$3,000. "What I actually won," he
says, "was four programs at a cost of
$6 each or credit for four programs.
Since there were no programs in the
catalog I was interested in at the
time, I chose the credit."
Mr. Toledano now plans to profit
from his recently acquired ex-
perience. "In the back of the catalog
are some yellow pages," he explains.
"I noticed them after 1 sent my
program in to the contest. They're
for smart people who sell their
programs themselves instead of
giving the rights to a company and
letting them market it. Next time,
I'm going to be one of the smart
ones-11ll use the catalog to ad-
vertise, but 111 sell the program
myself and keep the profits."
Mr. Toledano, current vice pres-
ident of the Panama Canal Society
of Professional Engineers, is also a
member of the American Society of
Heating, Refrigeration and Air-
Conditioning Engineers, and the
Panamanian Society of Engineers
and Architects. His wife Lucia, a
sixth-level pianist and a graduate
gymnastic teacher, has won local
awards for her artwork in pastels.
The Toledanos live in the "El
Cangrejo" section of Panama City
with their three children, Rogelio,
16, who is in hisjunior year at Balboa
High School; Roberto, 14, who is in
the ninth grade at Curundu Junior
High School; and Michelle, 11, a
fifth grade student at Diablo Ele-
mentary School.

1982 youth and teenager soccer

La programacion le rinde dividends

Muchos de nosotros sgoagMos con
alg6n dia hacernos famosos con una
nueva y fascinante idea. Pero Roger
R. Toledano, jefe del Ramo de
Refrigeraci6n y de Aire Acon-
dicionado en la Divisi6n de Man-
tenimiento de la Comisi6n del Canal
de Panama, ha visto hecho realidad
ese suefio.
El Sr. Toledano ha elaborado un
program de computadora que
determine, en minutes, la cantidad
de aire acondicionado que se
necesita para refrescar las areas de un
edificio. El program tiene por
objeto calcular la carga razonable de
calor y la carga latente (debido a las
personas) con una hoja de impresi6n
de la computadora para tres deter-
minadas horas del dia-en este caso,
las 10 a.m., 2 p.m. y 5 p.m. La
computadora pasa por 533 pasos
programados para terminar el c6m-
puto.
El program es introducido a la
computadora bAsica Hewlett-Pa-
ckard 41CV sostenida en la mano
mediante ocho cintas magn6ticas,


cada una de las cuales pasa a trav6s
de la computadora dos veces por un
equivalent de 16 pass. Las cintas
son comparable en tamafio y forma
a las pequefias etiquetas de las
carpetas de archives.
Con respect al cost por crear el
program, el Sr. Toledano dice que
el mayor gasto fue el tiempo que se
emple6 el cual calcula entire 24 y 32
horas. Tambien tuvo que comprar el
papel de impresi6n para la com-
putadora y las cintas magn6ticas. "El
papel no fue un asunto pequefio para
cuando termin6 de eliminar todos los
obstaculos del sistema", admite.
"Tenia que efectuar una impresi6n
complete cada vez que hacia una
correcci6n y cada impresi6n com-
prende yards de papel".
Despu6s de perfeccionar el pro-
grama, el Sr. Toledano lo prob6 en
varies trabajos y luego decidi6
inscribirlo en un concurso para
aceptaci6n en el Catalogo de Pro-
gramas de contribuci6n a la Biblio-
teca de Usuarios de Computadora
Hewlett-Packard para el HP-41. El


criteria para aceptaci6n en el
catalogo incluye la clara y complete
documentaci6n en ingl6s, sin dupli-
ci6n de programs en existencia,
legibilidad, habilidad de resolver
ejemplos de problems y represen-

ofrecen Bomberos
Como consecuencia de dispo-
sici6n del tratado que rige la atenci6n
en las instalaciones medicas, la
Division de Bomberos de la Comi-
si6n del Canal de Panama, que
proporciona servicio m6dico de
emergencia en el area canalera,
anuncia que comenzara a trans-
portar a aquellas personas que deben
recibir atenci6n en los hospitals de
PanamA hasta las instalaciones en
Panama y Col6n.
Los casos series que amenacen la
vida o la perdida de un miembro,
segin lo determine los tecnicos
medicos de emergencia en el lugar,
continuaran siendo transportados a
la instalaci6n m6dica mas cercana,
sin considerar la elegibilidad.

El Director de Salud y Seguridad
Coronel Ignacio Hernmndez-Frago-
so ha sido designado como el punto
de contact de la Comisi6n del
Canal de Panama para el fortaleci-
miento del program de dar sangre
del Canal de Panama. Segtin el
Coronel Hernmndez, el program es
important si se ha de tener a mano
las cantidades necesarias y los tipos
de sangre en el Hospital Gorgas del
Ej6rcito para responder a situaciones
de emergencia. La entidad de la
Compafiia/ Gobierno "solia tener un
program muy exitoso", dijo, "y es
important que la Comisi6n preste

Ley de Compensaci6n a los Em-
pleados Federales (FECA) (ciuda-

que hayan sufrido lesiones en el
desempefio de sus funciones, antes
del 1� de abril de 1982, deberan saber
que ya no son elegibles para recibir
atenci6n y tratamiento medico en las
instalaciones MEDDAC. A fin de
asegurar que se proporcione aten-
ci6n de seguimiento necesaria en
otras instalaciones m6dicas, los no
'estadounidenses cubiertos por
FECA deberan comunicarse con el
Ramo de Reclamos llamando al

official del laboratorio clinic del
Hospital Gorgas del Ej6rcito, es el
official encargado del proyecto quien
trabajarA con el Dr. HernAndez y
con otros representantes de la
Comisi6n para coordinar el pro-
grama. Al preguntar cual era la
diferencia entire tener la sangre a
mano en el hospital y Ilamar a las
personas a que vengan a dar la
sangre segfln se present la ne-
cesidad, el Mayor Manning dijo que
aunque se pudiera localizar a las
personas indicadas en el precise
moment y se presentaran de
inmediato y dieran la sangre, se
tomaria seis horas mas procesar la
sangre para su uso. "Durante ese
lapso de tiempo", dijo, "el paciente
podria morir".
El Mayor Manning explic6 que
cualquier persona mayor de 18 afios
de edad puede donar sangre a traves
de este program, y que cada
donante puede dar una vez cada
ocho semanas. "Sin embargo, esto
nos proporcionaria mas sangre de la
que pudieramos almacenar", dijo.
"Si todo military y civil eligible,
resident en el area del Canal diera
sangre una vez al afio, tendriamos
mas que suficiente".
Los planes tentativos incluyen el
uso de una unidad m6vil que estaria
en determinados dias en las distintas
areas de trabajo del Canal. Los
itineraries para las unidades m6viles
serin publicados una vez sean
elaborados.

Concierto de orquesta
de camara
La Orquesta de CAmara de Lazar
Gosman presentara su primer con-

Asociaci6n Nacional de Conciertos
de Panama 1982 el miercoles 14 de

La orquesta fue organizada en los
Estados Unidos, y la integran 15
solistas, en su mayoria emigrantes

dinario violinist sovietico Lazar

gira por la America Latina cons-

El "trapiche" constitute para

el campesino un mini-ingenio

En la abundante despensa de la
naturaleza disfrutamos del saborear
los deliciosos jugos de docenas de
classes de frutas y vegetales--dsde
manzanas y naranjas hasta tomatoes y
7anahorias, incluyendo el "agua de
pipa". Una bebida que se conoce
como "guarapo", el liquid dulce que
se extra de la cania de az car, es
popular en Panamfi, especialmente
en las areas rules.
En los ingenios azucareros de
Panami, asi como alrededor del
mundo, equipo modern trabaja
rapida y eficazmente en extraer el
jugo de la calfa de az6car. El liquid,
como todos sabemos, es procesado y
convertido en az6car blanca gra-
nulada y en az6car morena, az6car
de reposteria, almibar y miel. El
residue fibroso de la cafia de az6car,
lamado "bagazo", tambi6n se utiliza
como combustible y para hacer
papel, distintos products quimicos
y plasticos.

Sin embargo, el exprimir el
"guarapo" de la cafia es algo
completamente distinto. Los nifios
se deleitan mascando pedazos de
cafia a fin de beber sorbitos del jugo,
pero para obtener jarras llenas de
jugo, se necesita algo much mis
eficiente. Los residents de las


regions rurales mis rfsticas de
Panama construyen y usan un
encantador y antiguo mecanismo
conocido como "trapiche", el cual
podria considerarse como un pe-
quefio ingenio azucarero.

Un trapiche consist en trees
grandcs rodillos de madera o tubos
anchos colocados verticalmente y
engranados arriba y abajo con
mecanismos riisticos. A fin de hacer
funcionar los rodillos, el del centro es
fijado desde arriba hasta el extreme
de un tronco transversal de entire seis
y ocho pulgadas de largo. En el
extreme exterior del tronco, en-
jaezan al ganado por los cuernos y
luego son impulsados, mediante
gritos y golpes gentiles, a caminar y
caminar alrededor de la maquina,
haciendo girar el mecanismo, que
active el rodillo del centro, el cual
empuja los otros dos rodillos, que
exprimen el jugo de la calfa.

Dos personas trabajan en los
rodillos; uno mete la cafia entire los
dos rodillos, el otro tuerce y dobla las
fibras aplastadas y las hala a trav6s
del rodillo tercero y del centro. Un
pedazo de cafia puede asi ser metido
y halado a trav6s de los rodillos tres o
cuatro veces hasta quedar "seco", en
cuyo moment los aplastados y
torcidos pedazos son tirados a un
lado.

Largos canales de madera debajo
de los rodillos reciben el jugo, o el
"guarapo", y lo llevan a un recipient
cuidadosamente colocado debajo.
Aunque hay algunas personas que
prefieren colarlo primero,el "guara-
po" puede ser bebido directamente al
salir del trapiche. Tomando en
.consideraci6n la clase de cafia que se
use, amarilla o blanca, el color del
jugo puede variar desde casi crista-
lino hasta chocolate claro. Pasa la
garganta suavemente, no es dulce
empalagoso, deja muy poco o
ningiin sabor en la boca y es, seglin
aseguran quienes lo produce, muy
saludable.

banderas a lo largo de las Esclusas de
Gatfin se encontraba el lugar donde j a
se celebraron recientemente los
animados events en los cuales lo
participaron' seis pasacables y bo-
tcros de las esclusas. dos por'dadad
una de las esclusas de Miraflores,
Pedro Miguel y Gat6n, en el XXVII
Certamen Anual de Lan7amiento de .
Cabos.
Despues de ser elevado al status de
competidores por medio de una series
de eliminatorias varias semanas
antes del gran certamen, cada
participate compiti6 a la vez en los
tres events tradicionales de dis-
tancia, altura y precisi6n, lanzando
un pesado cabo de manila de 125 pies
de longitud, cargado con el peso de .. - ' ,.
un nudo hecho en un extreme. La
soga se envuelve alrededor de una
pesa de plomo de ocho onzas.

segundo alio consecutive, como el
ganador, obteniendo el trofeo rota-
tivo para las Esclusas de Miraflores
por un aflo mis. La costumbre
sefiala que la competencia del
pr6ximo afio tendri lugar en el
sector Pacifico, en las Esclusas de
Pedro Miguel.

Calificndose a si mismo como
"aficionado perdido por el golf",
Purvis E. Hamm, ayudante en
seguridad de asuntos de personal en
la Oficina de Administraci6n de
Personal de la Comisi6n del Canal
de Panama, se contagi6 del mal hace
muchos afios cuando, a los 14 afios
de edad, acept6 un empleo como
cargador de palos de golf a fin de
ganar dinero.
Desde entonces su interns por el


segundo pasatiempo, el de inventor.
Recientemente recibi6 una patente
del Comisionado de Patentes y
Marcas de FAbrica en Washington,
D.C., para un dispositivo que se
puede emplear para practicar los
golpes de golf.
El dispositivo estA disefiado para
golfistas tanto de mano derecha
como izquierda y puede usarse
dentro de la casa, fijado a las patas de
una silla cualquiera, o afuera en la
cancha. Debido a que es compact y
fAcil de desarmar, puede transportar-
se con facilidad dentro del equipaje o
en una bolsa de palos de golf.
Despu6s de 20 afios de servicio, el
Sr. Hamm se jubil6 del Ej6rcito de
los Estados Unidos como Suboficial
Jefe en 1974. Estuvo acantonado
aqui durante dos afios en 1956, y
decidi6 regresar en 1976. Es em-
pleado de la Comisi6n desde hace
cinco ailos. "U n factor que me ayud6
a tomar la decision de regresar",
inform el Sr. Hamm, "es que
Panama es uno de los pocos paises
donde se puedejugar los 365 dias del
afio".
Tanto dentro como fuera de la
cancha de golf, el Sr. Hamm se
esfuerza por tratar a la gente en la
forma como a 61 le gustaria que lo
trataran. Cuando no esta traba-
jando, usualmente lo pueden en-
contrar en su cancha favorite en
Fuerte Amador o descansando en su
"otro hogar" en Balboa con su
encantadora esposa, Agnes Wil-
liams, de Col6n, y sus dos hijos,
Teresa, de 15 afios de edad, y Purvis
Jr., de 14 afios.

Esfuerzo Universitario), que refleja
sus sentimientos sobre el proyecto
cuando lo inici6.
Seg6n el Sr..Toledano, el proyecto
ha sido una experiencia educativa
para 61. "Ingres6 al concurso prin-
cipalmente para probar que podia
lograr que se publicara el programa,
dice. Sin embargo, habia el incentive
adicional de un primer premio-una
computadora por un valor de $2,000
6 $3,000. "Lo que en realidad gan6",
dice, "fueron cuatro programs a un
costo de $6 cada uno o el cr6dito por
los cuatro programs. Como no
habia programs en el catalogo que
me interesaban en ese entonces,
escogi el cr6dito".
El Sr. Toledano ahora proyecta
beneficiarse de su reci6n adquirida
experiencia. "En la 6ltima secci6n
del catalogo estan las paginas
amarillas", explica. "Las mir6 des-
pu6s que habia enviado mi program
al concurso. Son para personas
inteligentes que venden sus pro-
gramas ellos mismos en lugar de dar
los derechos a una compafiia para
que esta se los venda. La pr6xima
vez, estara entire los inteligentes-
"usar6 el catalogo para anunciar,
pero yo mismo vender6 el program
y me quedar6 con las ganancias".
El Sr. Toledano, actual vice-
presidente de la Sociedad de In-
genieros Profesionales del Canal de
Panama, es tambien miembro de la
Sociedad Americana de Ingenieros
de Calefacci6n, Refrigeraci6n y de
Aire Acondicionado, y de la Socie-
dad Panamefia de Ingenieros y
Arquitectos. Su esposa, Lucia, pia-
nista de sexto nivel y maestra
titulada en gimnasia, se ha ganado
premios locales por sus obras al
pastel. Los esposos Toledano resident
en El Cangrejo en la ciudad de
Panama con sus tres hijos, Rogelio,
de 16 afios de edad, quien asiste al
pen6ltimo afio en la Escuela Se-
cundaria de Balboa; Roberto, de 14
afios de edad, quien esta en el noveno
grado en la Escuela Secundaria de
Curundl; y Michelle, de 11 afios de
edad, quien cursa el quinto grado en
la Escuela Primaria de Diablo.
