Hospital care benefit of Panama's SS


An important change to take
place as the treaty timetable ad-
vances will be the termination on
March 31, 1982, of health care
services in U.S. Government facil-
ities for most non-U.S.-citizen em-
ployees and their dependents.
In compliance with the treaty,
non-U.S.-citizen employees of the
Commission who were employed
subsequent to the entry into force of
the treaty are covered by the Social
Security System of the Republic of
Panama.
Currently 1.487 Commission em-
ployees are covered by Panama's
.Social Security (Caja de Seguro
Social) and are eligible to receive all
of the benefits offered by the system.
Unlike U.S. Social Security,
which provides only retirement and
survivors'benefits, Panamanian So-
cial Security offers in addition a
wide range of health services.
Benefits include maternity and
child care, health care for the worker
and his or her dependents, work-
men's compensation, retirement
pensions, widows' and orphans'


pensions and financial aid toward
the funeral. Dependent children are
covered up to 18 years of age, or to
age 25 if they are students. If for
some reason an operation cannot be
performed in Panama, the costs of
the operation performed elsewhere'
are covered by Panama's Social
Security.
Among the benefits Commission
employees covered by Panamanian
Social Security have is free medical
care at any Social Security medical
facility including the Amador Gue-
rrero Hospital in Colon and the
Municipal Hospital in Panama City,
generally known as the Social
Security Hospital.
The Municipal Hospital has 900
beds and cares for an average of
20,000 patients a year, said Hospital
Director Dr. Alonso Roy, in a recent
interview. He added that there are
3,200 employees including 65 in-
terns, 105 residents and 325 spe-
cialists. Specialists must have two
years of internship and three years of
practice before joining the staff, Roy
said. A graduate of Tulane Uni-


versity, Roy also said that over 85
percent of the specialists have done
some undergraduate or graduate
medical studies in the United States.
There are two emergency rooms
in the hospital, one is for adults and
the other for children. In addition,
the adult-emergency area has a new
unit for intensive on-the-spot care of
heart-attack victims.
Of the three intensive-care wards,
the newest is also for heart-attack
victims. In the ward, cardiac mo-
nitors in each patient'scubicle and at
a central console, monitor vital
signs. There is around-the-clock
vigilance in the ward, which has
space for 11 patients.
The yearly budget for hospital
growth and renovation alone is over
half a million dollars.
In a separate interview, Executive
Director of Medicines and Provi-
sions Dr. Julio Sandoval said that
few hospitals in the world and none
in Central America or South Amer-
ica have the kind and quality-of
medicines available at- the Social

When the exoneration form is
obtained, the buyer must have it
approved at the Panama Customs
Office located on the ground floor of
the Port Captains Building in the
Pier 18 area in Balboa.
To transfer a vehicle between
people with duty-free privileges, the
seller must take the registration
form of the vehicle to the Vehicle
Registration-Transfer Section, and
both the seller and buyer must
provide photocopies of their Com-
mission or military identification
cards along with the buyer's ap-
proved exoneration form. The Ve-
hicle Transfer Section on the Pacific
side is located at the rear of the
former Civil Affairs Building in
Ancon, and on the Atlantic side at
the Municipio Building in Colon.
The seller is not to remove the
Panama registration plate nor the
valid inspection sticker from the
vehicle. These will automatically be
.transferred to the new owner. It is
the buyer's responsibility prior to
concluding the transfer of the
vehicle to ascertain whether the
seller has any outstanding traffic
citations. Failure to do so will result
in the buyer's having to pay the fines
at registration time.
For the transfer of a vehicle by a
person with duty-free privileges to
one without those privileges the
procedures are the same, except that
the seller and buyer are required to
take the vehicle to the Panama
Customs Office Evaluation Section
located on 50th Street in San
Francisco where, after evaluation,
the buyer will be issued a letter with
a copy authorizing the transfer of
the vehicle, to be hand delivered to
the appropriate Vehicle Transfer
Section in Colon or Ancon.
The buyer and the seller then
proceed to the Panama customs
holding area located in the former


Ancon Freight House where, after
removing the license plate and the
military and Republic of Panama
inspection stickers, the seller re-
leases the vehicle and its keys to the
Panama customs official in charge.
The letter and its copy, issued by
the main customs office, are also
turned over to the customs officer
who receives the vehicle. The

ceremony held at the U.S. Capitol.
Award ceremonies are expected to
take place on Capitol Hill in
September and later in the year to
cite the outstanding federal workers
of 1981.

For Acelia Howell, "handicapped" is nothing but a word


Although born without a left arm
from the elbow down, Acelia Howell
laughs at the idea that people might
consider her to be handicapped. An
18-year-old 1981 honors graduate of
Cristobal High School, Acelia en-
joyed two years of high school shop
classes so much that she decided to
become a professional carpenter.
Acelia currently works as a
student assistant in the carpentry
shop at Gatun Locks where, un-
hindered by the prothesis she wears
in place of a left arm, she works with
the complicated machinery asso-
ciated with her craft.
A person of multiple interests and
talents, she also excels at languages
and mathematics and was a member
of the ROTC while in high school,
where she became an expert shot
with a .22-caliber rifle.
In a recent interview. Acelia said
that she is considering studying
electrical engineering, but is holding
off on going to college until she
makes a trip to the United States.
There, sponsored by Colon charit-
able groups, she plans to exchange
her present prothesis, which ends in
a two-pronged grabbing device, for
a newer model that looks like a real
arm and hand and is operated
electronically. "I'm going to be a
bionic woman,"she said delightedly.
During this International Year of
Disabled Persons, Acelia, with her
exuberant personality and enorm-
ous enthusiasm for life, makes a
marvelous commercial for the fact


that the handicapped frequently can
and do live perfectly normal lives
and are often, by their attitude and
faith, an inspiration to those around
them.
Acelia said that she has never let
herself be discouraged from doing
anything. Deeply religious, she said

that she thanks God for giving her
the ability to do everything she has
ever wanted to do.
When not at work, Acelia helps
out at home where she lives with her
parents, two sisters and a brother.
She enjoys cooking and also likes to
dance and go to parties.

Modeling class slated
The Balboa YMCA will conduct
classes in Intermediate Modeling for

Victor Boa and his 14-piece band will get the first Jazz Season in Panama
off to a swinging start at 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 27, at the Balboa Theater.
The main attraction of the evening will be Tambo Jazz, a combination of

will continue in August with Bob Greene's Dixieland Band and into

Canoe race

register for the Second Annual 193d
Infantry Brigade Canoe Race which

Aquativity Center. The 10-mile race
is open to all military, DOD,
Commission privilege-card holders
and their dependents. No more than
25 three-person teams will be
allowed to race. All participants
must attend a meeting at 10 a.m.,

a tour of the course.
The rules of the race are: pushing
or holding other canoes is not
allowed during the race; all canoes
must pass by the pre-determined
check stations; capsized crews who
need assistance will be considered
disqualified; all paddles and canoes
must be of the same make (no
private race paddles will be al-
lowed); life jackets must be in each
canoe; and all canoes must check in
at the trestle. An awards ceremony

Some collectors get kick out of empty beer cans

Most of us have labored for years
under the delusion that the pleasure
to be derived from canned beer was
in the drinking. Not so! Would you
believe that there are those who
actually throw away the beer and
save the can? Incredible as that may
seem, there are a number of people
who find great pleasure in collecting
empty beer cans.
These people, more than 23,000 of
them, have even formed a worldwide
organization called the Beer Can
Collectors of America with chapters
in 24 countries besides the United
States. In addition to publishing a
bi-monthly newsletter for its mem-
bers, the B.C.C.A. also holds a
yearly three-day conventionn" where
collectors gather to swap stories and
cans. Because the buying and selling
of cans is discouraged by the
B.C.C.A., the convention offers
collectors a rare opportunity
through trading to obtain new and
different cans for their collections.
Since the first beer can was
marketed in 1935, sales of canned
beer have increased dramatically,
primarily because customers no
longer have to worry about re-
turning the bottles for deposit, and
the cans are easier and less expensive
to transport. By 1952, canned beer
had cornered 24 percent of the
packaged beer market. The in-
vention of tab tops in 1961, by the
Aluminum Company of America
(Alcoa), further increased canned
beer's marketability by eliminating
the need for a can opener. Pitts-
burgi's irn' City Beer was'the first
company to use tab tops, which now
are commonplace on most canned
drinks.,
Raingig in size from 6 ounces to I
gallon, beer cans can be delightfully
different in appearance. The labels
which, identify the brewing com-
pany include among their designs
subject matter ranging from animals
on the endangered species list to a
stout woman in a swimsuit, found
on Olde Frothirigslosh beer cans. In
addition, some beers have unusual
names such as Bonzo's Beer, Old
Oxhead Ale, Double Diamond and
Tennents Penny which make them
attractive to potential collectors.

John Ahrens of New Jersey is
generally considered "king of the
beer can collectors" with more than
10,000 different cans to his credit.
Ahrens, who was the nin:h original
member of the B.C.C.A., annually
sponsors a trip to Europe for
collectors to visit breweries and
acquire new cans.

In Panama, there are about 75
beer can collectors, although ac-
curate figures-are impossible to get
since the local chapter of collectors
no longer exists. The majority are
teenagers who do it for fun or as a
change from the popular, practice of
stamp or. coin collecting. Too young.
to buy canned beer legally, most of
the younger collectors get their cans
from linehandlers or.crew men who
work for the Canal.
Once started, beer can collectors
find it difficult to quit since friends
and neighbors frequently bring by
new cans for their collections.

vention" in Denver, Colo., Bjorneby
was surprised by what he perceived
to be an unusually large number of
teachers and other professional
people at the conference. Bjorneby
remembered one man arriving a day
early to get his collection of 2,000
cans set up in his hotel room. After
returning to his room from break-
fast that same morning, he found all
of his cans missing. The room
attendant had thrown all the empty
cans away thinking they were
garbage. The owner of the cans later
retrieved his collection from the
hotel dumpster.
Bjorneby also recounted the story
of an Iowa man who, when he heard
that his boyhood home in Minne-
sota was being torn down, re-
membered that many empty beer
cans had been thrown inside the
unfinished walls during its construc-
tion. He rushed back to the site to
collect old cans which dated back to
the mid-1930s.
No matter what your personal
CANdid opinion may be of CAN
collectors, those who are CAN-
didates for the hobby CAN thank
their lucky stars to be living in
Panama where they CAN CANvass
for CANs at the dock areas at both
ends of the CANal, and no place else
CAN hold a CANdle to that!

No man is really happy or safe
without a hobbv; and it makes
precious little difference what the
outside interest may be-botany,
beetles or butterflies, roses, tulips
or irises;fishing, mountaineering
or antiques-anything will do so
long as he straddles a hobby and
rides it hard.

He added that there is a back-up
system for acquiring scarce med-
icines within 24 to 48 hours, by
calling a special medical-supply
center in Miami. The hospital
spends approximately $24 million a
year on medications, said Sandoval,
adding that the average cost for a
patient's stay in the hospital is $150 a
day.
All patients covered by Social
Security get their medicines free of
charge. It takes from 15 minutes to
half an hour to get a prescription
filled at the hospital pharmacy.
On the Atlantic side, Social
Security patients use the smaller
Amador Guerrero Hospital located
on 10th Street and Gorgas Drive.
There, they are also eligible for all
the benefits provided by Panama's
Social Security System.
In a recent interview, Hospital
Director, Dr. Jaime Trejos, in-
dicated that the hospital has 230
beds, but that only 70 to 75 percent
of them are in use during any given
period. The beds include 55 in the
children's ward, 45 for maternity
and 130 for adults requiring hos-
pitalization due to illness or surgery.
The average number of patients per
month, according to Trejos, is 730.
On staff at Amador Guerrero are
106 doctors, including 30 interns, 16


residents, and 60 specialists. Addi-
tionally there are 90 nurses, 120
auxiliary nurses and 20 laboratory
technicians, along with a full com-
plement of personnel in radiology
and physical therapy.
At the hospital there is one
emergency room which operates 24
hours a day. It is staffed in shifts by
10 doctors. Also, specialists for
emergencies are on call anytime day
or night. Trejos stated that the
emergency room is fully equipped
for radiology and with respirators.

The intensive-care unit at the
hospital has three beds. In the ward,
patients are monitored, by nurses
and a doctor at all times. Here, too,
specialists are always on call.
Maternity care is an important
service of the hospital. Approxi-
mately 250 babies are born each
month, with an average of 8 to 10 a
day.
In addition, each month about
300 operations are performed at
Amador Guerrero. The average cost
for a patient to stay in the hospital is
$60 to $65 a day. Trejos added that
approximately $1,200,000 is spent
by the hospital yearly for medicines.
The pharmacy inside the hospital
is for in-patients only. For out-
patients, a pharmacy is located
outside but near the hospital. During

the mornings, which are the busiest
times, a patient might have to wait
up to an hour for a prescription to be
filled, but normal waiting time is a
half an hour or less.
In addition to the Amador
Guerrero Hospital, on the Atlantic
side there are four Social Security
clinics, three in Colon and one in
Ciudad Arco Iris, formerly Rain-
bow City. The Colon clinics are
located on 5th Street, 9th Street and
11th Street, while the one in Ciudad
Arco Iris is in the former Com-
munity Center complex.
Recognizing the need for hospital
improvement and expanded health
services, a new social security
hospital is currently under construc-
tion in Colon, which is expected to
be completed in about two years.
With space for 200 beds, the hospital
is expected to cost between $10
million and $12 million.

Un cambio important que tendri
lugar durante la ejecuci6n del
tratado serA la terminaci6n el 31 de
marzo de 1982, de los servicios de
atenci6n m6dica en las instalaciones
m&dicas del Gobierno de los Estados
Unidos para los empleados no
estadounidenses y sus dependientes.
En cumplimiento con el tratado,
los empleados no estadounidenses
de la Comisi6n que fueron em-
pleados despues de entrar en vigor el
tratado estan cubicrtos por el
Sistema de la Caja de Seguro Social
de la Repibiica de Panama.
Actualmcnte 1,487 empleados de
la Comisi6n estan protegidos por la
Caja de Seguro Social y son elegibles
para recibir todos los beneficios que
ofrece dicho sistema.
A diferencia del Seguro Social de
los Estados Unidos, el cual ofrece
flnicamente jubilaci6n y beneficios
para sobrevivientes, la Caja de
Seguro Social panamefia propor-
ciona ademAs una amplia gama de
servicios medicos.
Estos beneficios incluyen mater-
nidad y atenci6n pediitrica, aten-
ci6n m6dica para el empleado(a) y
sus dependientes, compensaci6n al
trabajador, pensions de jubilaci6n,
pensions a las viudas y a huerfanos
y ayuda financiera para el funeral.

De las tres salas de cuidado
intensive, la mas nueva es tambien
para victims de ataques cardiacos.
Televisores en cada cubiculo y en la
console central registran los signos
vitales. Esta secci6n, con capacidad
para I1 pacientes, mantiene vigi-
lancia m6dica las 24 horas del dia.
El presupuesto annual para ex-
pansi6n y renovaci6n sobrepasa el
medio mill6n de d6lares.
En entrevista aparte, el Director
Ejecutivo de Medicamentos y Abas-
tos, Dr. Julio Sandoval, dijo que
pocos hospitals en el mundo y que
ninguno de Centro America o de
America del Sur tiene la clase y
calidad de medicines de que dispone
el Hospital del Seguro Social.

Cuando se obtiene el formulario
de exoneraci6n, el comprador debe
obtener su aprobaci6n en la Oficina
de Aduanas de Panama ubicada en
la plant baja del Edificio de la
Capitania de Puerto en el Muelle 18
de Balboa.
Para el traspaso de un vehiculo de
una a otra persona con derecho a
exoneraci6n, el vendedor debe llevar
el formulario de registro del ve-
hiculo a la Secci6n de Traspaso de
Vehiculos, y tanto el vendedor como
el comprador deben presentar foto-
copias de sus respectivas tarjetas de
identificaci6n de la Comisi6n o
military junto al formulario apro-
bado de exoneraci6n. La Secci6n de
Traspaso de Vehiculos del sector
Pacifico estA localizada atras del
antiguo Edificio de Asuntos Civiles
en Anc6n, y en el sector Atlantico en
el Edificio Municipal de Col6n.
El vendedor no tiene que quitar la
placa de PanamA ni la calcomania de
inspecci6n o revisado del vehiculo.
Ambas seran traspasadas automA-
ticamente al nuevo propietario. Es
responsabilidad del comprador veri-
ficar si el vendedor tiene pendiente
alguna cita por infracci6n de tran-
sito antes de finiquitar el traspaso
del vehiculo. De no hacerlo podria
tener que pagar la multa corres-
pondiente al moment de registrar el
vehiculo.
Para traspasar un vehiculo de una
persona con derecho a exoneraci6n,
a una sin tal privilegio, los proce-
dimientos son iguales con la excep-
ci6n de que el vendedor y el
comprador deben Ilevar el vehiculo
a la Secci6n de Valoraci6n de
Aduana localizada en la Calle 50, en
San Francisco, en donde, tras el
avalho, se expedira al- comprador
una carta con una copia autorizando
el traspaso del vehiculo, la cual
debera ser entregada personalmente
en la respective secci6n de traspaso
de vehiculos en Col6n o Anc6n.
El comprador y el vendedor
deberan dirigirse luego al Area de la
antigua Aduana de Anc6nen donde,
el vendedor quitara la placa y las
calcomanias military y de inspecci6n
(revisado) de la Reptblica de
Panama, y entregara el vehiculo y
las Ilaves al funcionario competent
de la Aduana.
La carta y su copia, expedida por


la oficina principal de Aduana,
tambi6n se entregara al funcionario
de Aduana que reciba el vehiculo.
Este funcionario retendra la copia y
pondra un sello en el original
certificando haber recibido el ve-
hiculo para custodia.
El vendedor y el comprador
debernn luego dirigirse a la Secci6n
de Registro de Vehiculos en el Area
del Canal, en donde el vendedor
debera entregar los documents y la
placa del vehiculo, al igua-l que la

Para Acelia Howell, "impedida" es s6lo una palabra


Aunque naci6 sin la parte del
brazo izquierdo desde el codo,
Acelia Howell rie de pensar que la
gente la consider impedida. Tras
graduarse en 1981 con honors a los
18 afios de la Escuela Secundaria de
Crist6bal, Acelia afirma haber dis-
frutado tanto sus dos afios de classes
de taller que decidi6 ser una
carpintera.
Acelia trabaja actualmente en el
taller de carpinteria de las Esclusas
de Gatin en donde, sin incomodarse
en lo mas minimo por la pr6tesis que
Ileva en su brazo izquierdo, trabaja
en la compleja maquinaria relacio-
nada con su actividad.
Con una diversidad de intereses y
talents, Acelia tambi6n sobresale
en idiomas y matemAticas y fue
integrante del ROTC cuando cur-
saba la escuela secundaria, en donde
se convirti6 en una expert en tiro
con rifle calibre .22.
En reciente entrevista, dijo que
analiza la posibilidad de estudiar
ingenieria el6ctrica, pero que esta
dilatando su ingreso a la . Uni-
versidad hasta despues que haga un
viaje a los Estados Unidos patro-
cinado por grupos caritativos de
Col6n. Alli proyecta cambiarse la
actual pr6tesis, que terminal en dos
dispositivos prolongados para aga-
rrar, por un modelo nuevo similar a
un brazo y mano comfln y que es
operado electr6nicamente. "Me
convertir6 en mujer bi6nica", dijo
con satisfacci6n.
Durante el Afio Internacional del
Impedido Fisico, Acelia, con su
alegre personalidad y enorme en-
tusiasmo por la vida, es ejemplo
vivido del hecho cierto de que los
impedidos frecuentemente pueden y
viven vidas normales y a menudo,


tanto por su actitud como por su fe,
sirven de inspiraci6n a quienes los
rodean.
Acelia dijo que nunca se ha
permitido desalentarse ante algo.
Profundamente religiosa, dice que
da gracias a Dios por haberle dado


la habilidad de hacer todo cuanto ha
querido.
Cuando no trabaja, Acelia ayuda
en su casa, en donde vive con sus
padres, dos hermanas y hermano.
Disfruta cocinando y tambi6n le
gusta bailar y asistir a fiestas.

Regata de cayucos
Mafiana es el l6timo dia para
inscribirse para la Segunda Regata
Anual de Cayucos de la Brigada 193
de Infanteria, que tendra lugar el
sibado 10 de agosto a la I p.m., en el
Centro Acuatico de Fuerte Gulick.
La regata de 10 millas esta abierta a
todos los militares, a los empleados
del Departamento de Defensa, a los
empleados de la Comisi6n que
tengan tarjetas de privilegio y a sus
dependientes. No mas de 25 equipos
de tres personas podran participar
en la.regata. Todos los participants
deben asistir a una reunion que
tendra lugar el 1L de agosto a las 10
a.m., la cual sera seguida por un
recorrido del trayecto.
Las reglas de la regata son las
siguientes: no se permitirA empujar o
agarrar a los otros cayucos durante
la regata; todos los cayucos deben
pasar frente a las estaciones de
control establecidas; las tripulacio-
nes que se volteen y que necesiten
ayuda serAn descalificadas; todos los
remos y ca.ucos deben ser de la

Coleccionar latas de cerveza es deleite para algunos

La mayoria de nosotros hemos
vivido durante afios bajo la idea
equivocada de que el placer que ha
de proporcionar la cerveza enlatada
esti en beberla. iEso no es cierto!
iPodria career usted que hay per-
sonas que actualmente botan la
cerveza y guardian la lata? Increible
como eso le parec~ri, hay un
n6mero de personas que sienten un
gran placer en coleccionar latas
vacias de cerveza.
Estas personas, mas de 23,000 de
ellas, hasta han formado una
organizaci6n mundial Ilamada los
Coleccionistas de Latas de Cerveza
de Am6rica (B.C.C.A.) con capi-
tulos en 24 paises ademis de los
Estados Unidos. Ademis de publi-
car un boletin informative quin-
cenal para sus miembros, el
B.C.C.A. tambi6n celebra anual-
mente una "Convenci6n" donde los
coleccionistas se reunen para inter-
cambiar histories y latas durante
tres dias. Debido a que la compra y
venta de latas es desalentada por el
B.C.C.A., la convenci6n le brinda a
los coleccionistas una magnifica
oportunidad para obtener nuevas y
distintas latas para sus colecciones
por medio del intercambio.
Desde que la primera lata de
cerveza fue puesta a la venta en 1935,
las ventas de cerveza enlatada han
aumentado de manera considerable.
principalmente porque los dcientes
ya no tienen que preocuparse por
devolver las botellas como dep6sito
y las latas son mis faciles y menos
:costosas de transporter. Para 1952,
la cerveza enlatada habia acaparado
el 24 por ciento del mercado de la
:cerveza. La invenci6in de lastapitas
.desechables en 1961, por la Alumi-
num Company of America (AlCoa),
aument6 mis el mercado de la
cerveza enlaiada, eliminando la
necesidad de un abridor de latas. La
Pittsburgh Iron City Beer fue la
primer compafiia en usar las tapitas
desechables las cuales son comunes
en la mayorla de los refrescos
enlatados.
Con tamafios que varian desde 6
onzas hasta un gal6n, las latas de
cerveza pueden ser agradablemente
distintas en apariencia. Las etique-
tas, que identifican la cerveceria,
incluyen en sus disefios desde
animals en peligro de extinci6n
hasta una mujer gorda en un traje de
bafio en latas de cerveza de "Olde
Frothingslosh". Ademis, algunas
cervezas tienen nombres poco co-
munes tales como Bonzo's Beer, Old
Oxhead Ale, Double Diamond y
Tennents Penny que los hacen
atractivos a los potenciales colec-
cionistas.
John Ahrens de Nueva Jersey es
considerado el "Rey de los Colec-


cionistas de Latas de Cerveza" con
mis de 10,000 latas distintas a su
haber. Ahrens, quien era el noveno
miembro original del B.C.C.A.,
patrocina anualmente un viaje a
Europa para que los coleccionistas
visiten las cervecerias y obtengan
nuevas latas.
En PanamA hay aproximadamen-
te 75 coleccionistas de latas de
cerveza aunque la cifra exacta es
dificil de obtener debido a que ya no
existe el capitulo local de colec-
cionistas. La mayoria son adoles-
centes que lo hacen por placer, o
como alternative a la popular
prActica de coleccionar estampillas o
monedas. Como son demasiado
j6venes para comprar cerveza le-
galmente, la mayoria de los j6venes
coleccionistas obtienen sus latas de
los pasacables o de la tripulaci6n de
naves del Canal.
Una vez que inicia el pasatiempo,
los coleccionistas de latas de cerveza
hallan dificil de renunciar a ello ya
que amigos y vecinos frecuente-


mente traen nuevas latas para
ayudarlos a ampliar sus colecciones.
Aunque Alan Blaney,.de Balboa,
ha estado coleccionando latas por
s6lo dos afios, ya tiene mis de 850'
latas. Haciendo el comentario sobre
el sabor de algunas cervezas, Blaney
dijo, "dos tragos y termino vacian-
dolas en el fregador."
Richard Bjorneby, de Coco Solo,
es considerado el "Primer Coleccio-
nista de Latas" entire los colec-
cionistas de latas de cerveza en el
Istmo. Como fundador del capitulo
"Big Ditch" en PanamA, Bjorneby
empez6 a coleccionar latas y botellas
de cerveza en 1961 porque le

parecieron atractivas. Aunque no ha
participado activamente en cambios
desde 1976, Bjorneby ai6nconserva
aproximadamente 3,700 latas en su
colecci6n.
El catalog las cervezas "Play-
mate" y "007" como latas de "fama"
porque son buscadas por la mayoria
de los coleccionistas debido a sus
nombres e historic. Ambas compa-
fiias de cerveza se vieron obligadas a
suspender su producci6n cuando
fueron demandadas por mal uso de
nombres de fibrica.
Las latas siempre favorites, segtin
Bjorneby, son "Soul Malt Liquor" y
"Soul Mellow Yellow". Estas cer-


vezas se produjeron s61o durante
tres semanas en 1967 cuando un
incendio durante las violencias en
Watts, California, destruy6 la cer-
veceria.
Mientras asistia a la "Conven-
ci6n" en 1974 en Denver, Colorado,
Bjorneby se sorprendi6 por lo que
percibi6 ser una cantidad suma-
mente grande de maestros y otros
profesionales en la conferencia.
Bjorneby recuerda a un hombre que
lleg6 un dia antes para montar su
colecci6o de 2,000 latas en la
habitaci6n de su hotel. Al regresar a
su habitaci6n despues de desayu-
narse esa misma mafiana, descubri6
q'e faltaban todas sus latas. El
aseador habia botado todas las latas
vacias creyendo que eran basura. El
duefio de las latas mis tarde
recuper6 su colecci6n del cami6n
volquete del hotel.
Bjorneby tambi6n cont6 la his-
toria de un hombre de Iowa quien,
cuando supo que la casa donde pas6
su nifiez en Minnesota iba a ser
demolida, record que muchas latas
vacias de cerveza habian sido tiradas
dentro de las paredes sin terminar
durante su construcci6n. Regres6
ripidamente al lugar para colec-
cionar latas viejas que se remon-
taban hasta mediados de la decada
de 1930.
No import cuil es su opini6n
personal sobre los coleccionistas de
latas, aquellos que sean candidates
para. el pasatiempo pueden , dar
gracias par la buena suerte de estar
viviendo en Panama donde pueden
hacer campafia para obtener latasen
las Areas de los muejies en ambos
extremes del Canal; y no hay ningfn
otro lugar que pueda ser comparado
con este.

cost de la gasoline, el mante-
nimiento y el pago del busito. Si
alguno abandon el grupo, puede
vender su participaci6n a un nuevo
miembro.

m6dicos en Miami. El hospital gasta
aproximadamente $24 millones
anuales en medicamentos, declar6
Sandoval, seiialando que el costo
promedio de esfadia de un paciente
en el hospital es de $150 diaries.
Todos los pacientes cubiertos por
el Seguro Social obtienen sus
medicines gratis. El despacho de las
recetas toma en el hospital entire 15
minutes y media hora.
En el sector Atlantico, los pa-
cientes del Seguro Social usan el
Hospital Amador Guerrero, loca-
lizado en la Calle 10 y Paseo Gorgas.
En ese centro hospitalario tienen
derecho a todos los beneficios que
concede el sistema panamefio de
seguridad social.
En reciente entrevista, el Director
del Hospital, Dr. Jaime Trejos,
indic6 que el hospital cuenta con 230
camas, pero que 6inicamente del 70
al 75 por ciento estan en uso en
determinado period. Las camas
estan distribuidas asi: 55 en la sala
pediatrica, 45 en maternidad y 130
estin disponibles para adults que
requieran hospitalizaci6n a causa de
enfermedad y para someterse a
cirugia. El promedio de pacientes,
seg6n Trejos, es de aproxima-
damente 730 al mes.
El Amador Guerrero tiene 106
medicos, incluyendo 30 internos, 16
residents, y 60 especialistas. Ade-
mAs, cuenta con 90 enfermeras, 120
auxiliares de enfermeria y 20 t6c-


nicos de laboratorio, asi como con
un equipo complete de radiologia y
fisioterapia.
El cuarto de urgencia del hospital
funciona las 24 horas del dia. Es
atendido en turnos por 10 m6dicos.
Ademis, especialistas estin dispo-
nibles para casos de emergencia a
cualquier hora del dia o de la noche.
Trejos serial6 que el cuarto de
urgencia esti provisto de equipos de
radiologia, para respirar y para
operaciones.
La unidad de cuidado intensive
del hospital tiene tres camas. En la
sala, m6dicos y enfermeras man-
tienen a los pacientes bajo obser-
vaci6n permanent. Tambi6n para
estos casos los especialistas estan
disponibles en cualquier moment.
La atenci6n en maternidad cons-
tituye un servicio important del
hospital. Aproximadamente 250
beb6s nacen al mes, lo que hace un
promedio de 8 a 10 al dia.
El Amador Guerrero atiende un
promedio de 300 operaciones men-
suales. El costo promedio por
paciente en el hospital es de $60 a
$65 diaries. Trejos afiadi6 que el
hospital y demis clinics gastan
aproximadamente $1,200,000 anua-
les en medicamentos. El presupuesto
annual para 1982 contempla el
aumento en renglones importantes
como alimentaci6n, medicamentos
y mantenimiento de equipos.
La farmacia que opera en el
hospital es 6nicamente para tender
las necesidades de pacientes hospi-
talizados. Una farmacia localizada
cerca del centro hospitalario atiende

las necesidades de medicines de los
pacientes de consult externa. Du-
rante las mafianas, cuando hay
mayor demand, un paciente podria
esperar hasta una hora para recibir
sus medicamentos, pero normal-
mente la espera es de media hora o
menos.
Aparte del Hospital Amador
Guerrero existen en el sector Atlan-
tico cuatro clinics que atienden
pacientes del Seguro Social, tres de
ellas en Col6n y la otra en la Ciudad
Arco Iris, conocida anteriormente
como Rainbow City. Las clinics de
Col6n estin ubicadas en las calls 5,
.9 y 11, y la de Ciudad Arco Iris se
encuentra en el antiguo Centro
Comunal.
Actualmente, y tras haberse es-
tablecido la necesidad de expandir y
mejorar los servicios de salud, se esta
construyendo en Col6n un nuevo
hospital del Seguro Social, el cual
debera estar concluido en unos dos
anios. Se estima que el hospital, que
tendri capacidad para 200 camas,
demandara una inversi6n de entire
$10 a $12 millones, concluy6 di-
ciendo Trejos.
