Stress, success topics of recent workshop


"Release Stress and Obtain Suc-
cess" was the title of a two-part
workshop conducted by Angela
Rodriguez of the Community Serv-
ices Division during Federal Wom-
en's Week in May.
The first part of the workshop
dealt with stress-what it is, what
are its mental and physical effects
and how it can be dealt with.
Rodriguez explained that stress has
been defined biologically as the
"nonspecific response of the body to
any demand made upon it."
As an example of a "specific"
bodily response, Rodriguez cited the
reaction of a person's body when
exposed to heat. The body perspires
because the evaporation of the
perspiration from the skin's surface
has a cooling effect. In this same
situation, a "non-specific" bodily
response would be for the person to
worry and fret about the hot
weather, thus building up body
tension. Such a non-specific re-
sponse is the essence of stress, said
Rodriguez.
She pointed out that stress can
come from many types of emotion
such as joy, excitement, fear or
sorrow. Falling in love, winning the
lottery, starting a new job or losing a
loved one can all be equally stressful,
depending upon how a person reacts
to the situation.
Rodriguez said that "it is im-
material whether the agent or
situation we face is pleasant or
unpleasant. All that counts is the
intensity of the demand for re-
adjustment or adaptation." She
added that perhaps the stressful
situation hardest to face is change,
especially when the change is rapid


and leaves little time for adjustment.
In noting examples of stressful
situations in the work place, Ro-
driguez pointed out that women in
managerial or non-traditional jobs
often feel that they must make an
extra effort to show that they are
capable, since others often question
their abilities. Both men and women
in managerial positions often feel
pressured to cope with all situations
no matter how difficult, and this
attitude can also produce stress.
Rodriguez emphasized that one
reason managers should learn to
handle stress is that stress in the
office can be sensed by and
transferred to subordinates. This
situation creates an environment
charged with tension which may
result in lowered productivity and
creativity and a lessening of har-
monious relationships.
Unrelieved stress accumulates
and eventually manifests itselfin any
number of ways..Rodriguez pointed
out that the medical field is giving
added. importance to stress in
relation to illnesses. Ulcers, head-
aches and hypertension are ailments
commonly associated with stress,
and. Rodriguez mentioned others
such as colitis, asthma, some heart
diseases and most allergies. A
growing school of medical thought
attributes approximately 90 percent
of all illnesses to stress-related
causes, she said.
Rodriguez added that to relieve
stress, it is first necessary to re-
evaluate one's philosophy of life.
Such remedies as taking drugs,
sleeping pills or alcohol are just
attempts to ignore problems and can.
only result in creating more stress.


Neighbors should keep watchful eye


Commission employees and their
dependents occupying quarters in

requested to be aware of any
unusual activities in their neighbor-
hoods.
At this time of year, when many
employees are on vacation, people
should be extra watchful of the


quarters of their neighbors who are
on leave, as well as be alert to any
unauthorized happenings or van-
dalism in or around vacant quarters.
Any suspicious-looking individ-
uals or unauthorized persons seen
loitering in these areas should be
reported immediately to the police
or to housing officials.


Doing nothing about stress can turn
a person into a "walking heart
attack" she said, and suggested that
the best way to combat stress is
physical exercise and physical and
mental relaxation. Surrounding our-
selves with elements that are agre-
able to our inner likings, such as
people with whom we have a good
rapport and in whom wecan confide
or participating in an activity that
we like,-are good ways to avoid the
accumulation of harmful stress.
Rodriguez points out, however,
that we find ourselves constantly
having to adapt to situations that we
neither like nor feel comfortable
with. Looking. for ' positive non-
stress-creating solutions to prob-
lems is the healthy way to handle a
stressful situation. Crying over the
proverbial spilt milk will not bring
the milk back, but it will create
stress. Cleaning up :the mess and
getting another glass of milk is a
positive, health) solution.
The real reward from the positive
handling of stress, Rodriguez con-
cluded, is "learning, seeing, and
knowing that we can control our
bodies, that we can, to a great
.extent, regulate and change our own
internal bodily responses."
In the second part of the work-
shop which focused on achieving
success, Rodrigiez 'emphasized that
success usually means different
things to different people-to some
it may be power, fame and wealth
while to others it may be happiness
or a home. She went on to list seven
characteristics of what she calls a
"successful personality."
The first characteristic she men-
ti6'fiTn is i tviig a sense of direction.
An individual With no personal
goals, she says, is likely to go around-
in circles, to feel lost, aimless and
without purpose. She stressed the
importance of having something to
look forward to, to work for and to
hope for.
Understanding was listed as the
second characteristic of a successful
personality. This means having
good communications with others

Every weekend, divers by the
hundreds are lured to the oceans off
Panama's shores by their desire to
discover and explore the secrets of
the underwater world. Whether it be
the excitement of searching for
sunken treasure or the wonder of
swimming amongst brilliantly col-
ored tropical marine plants and
animals, divers thrive on the spirit of
adventure offered by earth's last
frontier.
For centuries people have at-
tempted to solve the problems of
swimming underwater for extended
periods of time. In around 400 B.C.,
the Greek philosopher Aristotle
wrote that "divers were sometimes
provided with instruments for-draw-
ing air from above the water and
could remain for a long time under


the sea." By the fourth century A.D.,
drawings appeared of a diver
wearing a helmet with a long leather
pipe attached to it which led to the
surface where its open end was kept
afloat by an inflated animal bladder.
Diving devices continued to im-
prove as people sought better
methods for moving and breathing
underwater. One invention was a
leather barrel-type contraption with
two sleeves for arms and an
observation porthole. By 1830, an
inventor named Augustus Siebe had
introduced a helmet fitted with air
inlet and regulating outlet valves, a
principal which is still in universal
use in diving.
Almost all sport divers today use
"scuba" or self contained under-
water breathing apparatus. The
French underwater expert Jacques
Y. Cousteau was a pioneer in the
development of open-circuit scuba,
a system in which gas is released into
the water when the diver exhales.

are primarily interested in sight-

the heavy, conventional diving suit
often worn by commercial divers is
mobility. Scuba has no connections
between the diver and the surface,
since breathing gas is carried in
tanks strapped to the diver's body.
A diver in a conventional diving
suit must walk upright and is
connected to the surface by a lifeline
and an air hose. The conventional
diving suit does, however, provide
extra protection and an unlimited
air supply.
The term "skin diving" is often
used interchangeably with scuba
diving, although by strict definition
skin diving refers to natural diving
without the use of underwater

weeks of physical training, diving

easy to the novice, a diver must
never forget,to follow safety guide-
lines such as never diving alone or
under the influence of alcohol or
drugs, always checking out equip-
ment before a dive, knowing the
diving area and strictly adhering to

Charity and self-esteem are two
related characteristics of the success-

others, says Rodriguez. Ifa person is
to be successful, he or she cannot
treat others like pawns to secure his
or her own personal ends. When one
treats others as valuable people,
one's own self-esteem goes up,
Rodriguez says. ,

breeds success" and urged people to
remember their past successes and to

panies worldwide, even though most
fireworks are still manufactured in
China. The creativity and ingenuity
which goes into Chinese pyrotechny
is remarkable. Many fireworks are
named according to the images,
sounds or colors which-they pro-
duce, and flowers, animals and
celestial objects are popular themes.
One line of Chinese fireworks
features "chirping birds, sky mon-
keys, flying golden dragons, lotus
flower, butterfly dancing and thun-
der-buzzard." Space-age enthusiasts
might be inclined to order fireworks
named "super brilliant comets,
flying satellites, whistling jupiters or
star wars." Other types of fireworks,
such as "silver wave fountains" or
"kaleidoscope" bear purely whim-
sical names.
Whatever their names, one thing
is for certain-for most people
fireworks are an indispensable in-
gredient for a "bang-up" Fourth of
July celebration.

Fireworks go together with the
Fourth of July just like turkeys go
with Thanksgiving and decorated
trees go with Christmas. Always a
delight to the crowd, the streaks,
sho ers, and bursts of brilliantly
colored, lights ,against the nighttime
sky are a visual spectacular that has
come to signify celebration.
Fireworks are explosives or com-
bustibles used for display. Pyro-
technics, the art of making or the
manufacture and use of fireworks,
has come a long way since its ancient
Chinese origins. Now used primarily
for entertainment, fireworks are
thought to have developed out of
military rockets and explosive mis-
siles. During the Middle Ages,
fireworks accompanied the spread
of military explosives westward, and
in Europe, it was the military
fireworks expert who was called
upon to conduct pyrotechnic cel-
ebrations of victory and peace.
Today we marvel at the burst of
color spattered into the evening sky,
but until the 1880s, fireworks had no
colors. In the early 19th century, the
era of modern pyrotechny began
with the introduction of potassium
chlorate which made it possible to
achieve genuine color effects. The
combustion of the potassium chlor-
ate in combination with a metal salt
produces either a red, green, yellow
or blue colored flame, depending
upon the metal salt used.
When the new ingredients mag-
nesium and aluminum were in-
troduced into the chemical com-
pound used in fireworks, a brilliancy
never before attained was produced.

taller en dos parties que dirigi6
Angela Rodriguez de la Divisi6n de
Servicios Comunales durante la
Semana Federal de la Mujer en
mayo.
La primera parte del seminario
trat6 sobre tensi6n-qu6 es, cuAles
son sus efectos mentales y fisicos y
c6mo se le puede tratar. La Sra.
Rodriguez explic6 que la tension ha
sido descrita biol6gicamente como
"la reacci6n no especifica del cuerpo
a cualquier esfuerzo que sea reque-
rido de 1l".
Como un ejemplo de una reacci6n
"especifica" del cuerpo Rodriguez
mencion6 la forma como reacciona
el cuerpo de una persona cuando es
expuesto al calor. El cuerpo suda
porque la evaporaci6n del sudor de
la superficie de la piel tiene un efecto
refrescante. En esta misma situa-
ci6n, una reacci6n "no especifica"
del cuerpo seria la preocupaci6n de
la persona por el clima caliente, asi
aumentando la tension del cuerpo.
Tal reacci6n no especifica es la
esencia de la tensi6n, dijo.
Sefial6 que la tension puede ser
motivada por muchas classes de

Rodriguez subray6 que el 6xito por
lo general significa diferentes cosas a
diferentes personas--para algunos

El YMCA de Balboa de los
Servicios Armados esta ofreciendo
cursos basicos de buceo en el'Y'y en
el Centro Recreative Zodiac a partir
del 6 y 7 de julio, respectivamente.


El curso del'Y' se dicta los lunes,
mi6rcoles y viernes en la noche, y el
curso de Howard se dicta los martes
y jueves en la noche. Los cursos de
cuatro semanas incluyen sesiones en
la piscina y en el aula con dos buceos
en el Oceano Atlantico. Se pueden
obtener certificados del YMCA,
NAUI, PADI, CMAS o LACO. El
primer curso abarca el cuidado y

Todos los fines de semana cen-
tenares de buzos se lanzan a las
aguas cercanas de los mares de
Panama ansiosos por descubrir y
explorer los secrets del mundo
submarine. Ya sea por la emoci6n
de buscar un tesoro en las profun-
didades o por la fascinaci6n. de
nadar entire las plants y animals
marines tropicales de vivos colors,
los buzos proliferan por el espiritu
de aventura que les ofrece la fltima
frontera terrestre.
Durante siglos la gente ha tratado
de resolver el problema de nadar
bajo el agua por prolongados
periods de tiempo. Alrededor del
afio 400 antes.de Cristo, el fil6sofo
griego Arist6teles escribi6 que "a
veces se le proporcionaba a los
buzos instruments para tomar el
aire fuera del agua y asi poder
permanecer un largo period debajo
del agua." Para el siglo cuarto
despues de Cristo, aparecieron
dibujos de un buzo que levaba


puesto un casco con un tubo largo de
cuero que salia del casco y cuyo
extreme abierto estaba en la super-
ficie mantenido a flote por la vejiga
inflada de un animal.
Los aparatos de buceo conti-
nuaron mejorando a media que las
personas buscaban mejores m6todos
para moverse y respirar debajo del
agua. Uno de los inventos fue un
equipo de cuero en forma de barril
con dos mangas para los brazos y un
cristal de observaci6n frente a la
cara. En 1830, un inventor llamado
Augustus Siebe desarroll6 un casco
equipado con vilvulas para tomar
aire y para regular la salida del aire,
principio que sigue utilizAndose
mundialmente en buceo.
Hoy dia la mayoria de los buzos
deportistas usa "scuba", la escafan-
dra aut6noma. El expert frances en
vida submarine Jacques Y. Cous-
teau fue pionero en el desarrollo de
la escafandra aut6noma de circuit
abierto, un sistema del cual sale gas
al agua cada vez que el buzo exhala
aire, ocasionando una descarga de
burbujas. El sistema se conoce como
"Aqua-Lung", un nombrede fbrica
que se aplica err6neamente con
frecuencia a todas las escafandras
aut6nomas para respirar.
La escafandra aut6noma es apro-
piada para los buzos que est6n
interesados principalmente 'en ver,
explorer, coleccionar conchas, pes-
car con arp6n o tomar fotograflas
submarines. Su mayor ventaja sobre

comerciales es la movilidad. La
aut6noma no tiene conexiones entire
el buzo y la superficie, ya que el gas
que respira es Ilevado en tanques
.atados con correas al cuerpo del
buzo.
Un buzo que Ileva una escafandra
conventional tiene que caminar
erguidamente y estA conectado a la
superficie por un cable y un tubo de
aire. Sin embargo, la escafandra
conventional si brinda protecci6n
adicional y un suministro de aire sin
limited.
El tsrmino "buceo sin escafandra"
es frecuentemente usado de modo
intercambiable con el buceo de
escafandra aut6noma, aunque por
estricta definici6n el buceo sin
escafandra se refiere al buceo
natural sin usar el aparato para
respirar debajo del agua. El buceo
libre, o el uso de aletas y mascara
con tubo de respiraci6n mientras el

variaci6n del buceo.
Para ser un buzo de escafandra
aut6noma certificado, una persona
debe terminal un curso acreditado
national e internacionalmente. La
mayoria de los cursos abarcan entire
cuatro y ocho semanas de adies-
tramiento fisico, fisiologia de buceo,
studio de la presi6n submarine y
sus efectos en el cuerpo, conoci-
miento del equipo e instrucci6n en
seguridad.
Aunque el buceo con escafandra
autdnoma puede parecer facil al
principiante, un buzo nunca debe
olvidar seguir pautas de seguridad
tales como nunca practicar el buceo
solo o bajo la influencia de alcohol o

antes de practical el buceo, conocer
el Area de buceo y ceflirse estricta-
mente alas limitaciones de tiempo y
profundidad de las tablas de buco.
La mayoria de los, buzos usan las
tablas de buceo de la Armada de los
Estados Unidos.

La Comisi6n del Canal de
Panama mantiene y opera dos
cAmaras de descompresi6n. Am-
bas estAn actualmente ubicadas
en la Escuela de Buceo en la
Estaci6n de Salvamento de la
Division Industrial en Gattn.


Los cursos de buceo tambi6n
ensefian a los estudiantes sobre la
vida marina, especialmente species
que son potencialmehte peligrosas.
La mayor parte de 16s instructors
fijan una profundidad mAxima de
buceo de 60 pies para los aficionados
principiantes y entire .100 y 130 pies
para los experimentados.
Los estudiantes que. participaran
deben generalmente hacerse un
examen fisico antes de inscribirse en
;un curs6ede.buceo,;ya que el buzo
'debe estar en buen estado fisico y
libre de sinusitis aguda, de proble-
mas respiratorios, auditivos o car-
diacos.

Tambi6n hay requisitos minimos
de nataci6n que los estudiantes
deben cumplir, debido a que los
buzos deben poder defenders en
aguas profundas sin aparato de
buceo. Una persona que se inscriba
en uno de los cursos de buceo de la
Division de Servicios Recreativos
del Ej6rcito, por ejemplo, debe
poder nadar 500 metros sin parar y
poder pedalear en el agua por cinco
minutes sin usar las manoss y por
otros cinco minutos� usando las
manos. Estos son los requisitos
minimos.
Aunque algunos cursos de buceo
proporcionan el equipo a los estu-
diantes y hay disponibles tiendas de
alquiler de aparatos de buceo, una
persona que practique el buceo
regularmente por lo general compra
su propio aparato.

Para comprar equipo de buena
calidad, un buzo gastara aproxi-
madamente $120 por un tanque de
aire, otros $120 por un regulador
que proporciona el aire del tanque, y
$40 por un par de aletas, mascara y
tubo de respiraci6n. El buzo debera
adquirir tambi6n un dispositivo de
control de flotaci6n o un dispositivo
de estabilizaci6n, los cuales pueden
ser inflados como chalecos salva-
vidas a fin de Ilevar al buzo a la
superficie y mantenerlo a flote.

El dispositivo de control de
flotaci6n tiene la forma de una
herradura y se usa alrededor del
cuello y colgando sobre el pecho. El
dispositivo de estabilizacion se usa
como chaleco y tiene la ventaja de
inflarse adelante y atras y es much
mas c6modo que el dispositivo de
control de flotaci6n. Tambien tiene
una bolsa en la parte de atras para
Ilevar el tanque de buceo. Un
dispositivo de control de flotaci6n
cuesta aproximadamente $130
mientras que el dispositivo de
estabilizaci6n vale cerca de $165.

Los accesorios que son impor-
tantes para un buzo incluyen un
man6metro, una brijula y un
cuchillo que se pueda usar para
cortar y librarse de hierbas acuaticas
u otros obstaculos inesperados si se
enreda.

Hay una variedad de cursos de
buceo disponibles para los aspi-
rantes a buzos en el Istmo. El
YMCA de Balboa ofrece un curso


basico de buceo de cuatro semanas
que incluye sesiones en la piscina y
en el aula asi como tambi6n buceos
en el oc6ano. El Centro de Buceo del
'Y' esta abierto de 6:30 a 8:30 p.m.
los lunes, mi6rcoles y viernes, y el

tivos del Ej6rcito de los Estados
Unidos administra tiendas de buceo.
en Fuerte Gulick, Sherman y
Clayton. Estas tiendas alquilan
equipo de buceo a buzos certificados
que porten tarjetas de privileio asi
como tambien inscriben _a estu-
diantes para los cursos de buceo.

La tienda en Fuerte Clayton
tambi6n brinda servicios adicionales
a buzos tales como examen hidros-
tAtico de tanques, el uso de una
estaci6n de evaluaci6n y prueba del
regulador y una camara.para probar

en Fuerte Clayton estA ubicada en el
Edificio 128 y se puede comunicar

las 5 y 9 p.m., de lunes a viernes.

La tienda de buceo en Fuerte
Gulick se encuentra en el Edificio
218, frente a la piscina, y la de Fuerte
Sherman esta en el Edificio 30. De
acuerdo con las estadisticas de las
tiendas, entire 200 y 300 unidades de
buceo son alquiiladas cada fin de
semana ya que numerosos buzos del
Area frecuentan las aguas de Pa-

Aunque la mayoria de los cursos
de buceo estAn abiertos a hombres y
mujeres, la piscina de Fuerte Clay-
ton ofrece un curso especial de
buceo para mujeres. Ademas de
ensefiar las habilidades basicas del
buceo, el curso trata, ademas, sobre
los problems especiales que las
mujeres buzos pueden encontrar en


areas tales como flotaci6n, fuerza de
nataci6n'y resistencia.
Una vez que una persona sea
certificada y equipada, puede esco-
ger de una amplia variedad de
atractivas Areas de buceo en Pa-
nama. Algunos de los lugare's
favorites de los buzos aqui son
Portobelo, Isla Grande y la'�Co-
marca de San Bias. La abundancia
de arrecifes de coral, peces, y aguas

claras y cAlidas son una fuerte
atracci6n para los buzos del area.
Los clubes de buceo abundan y
usualmente auspician buceos colec-
tivos a fin de que los gastos puedan
ser divididos entire los miembros del
grupo.
Muchos de los buzos en Panama
prefieren bucear en junio, julio y
agosto debido a que el agua es mas
calmada y por ende mas clara que
durante los demas meses. Sin
embargo, segAn las observaciones de
un instructor de buceo, no importa
cual sea la poca del afio, siempre se
puede disfrutar de buen buceo en
PanamA.

propios del Cuatro de Julio como el
pavo lo es del Dia de Acci6n de
Gracias y el Arbol decorado lo es de
la Navidad'. Los;estallidos y la lluvia
de brillantes colors contra el fondo
de la noche constitute un es-
pectaculo que anuncia celebraci6n.
Los fuegos artificiales son explo-
sivos o combustibles lanzados en
Ilamativa exhibici6n. La pirotecnia,
arte de fabricar y lanzar fuegos
artificiales, ha avanzado' much
desde sus origenes en la China
antigua. Empleados ahora princi-
palmpente para entretenimiento, se
cree que los fuegos artificiales
surgieron de los cohetes militares y
proyectiles explosives. Durante la
Edad Media, los fuegos artificiales
acompafiaron la expansion de los
explosives militares a occidente, y
en Europa era el expert en fuegos
de artificio militares quien era'

Hoy dia nos maravillamos de los
estallidos y colors que se esparcen
en el firmamenito nocturno, pero
hasta los afios de 1800, los fuegos
artificiales no tenian colors. En los
inicios del siglo XIX, se inici6 la era
de la pirotecnia modern con el uso
del clorato de potasio, que hizo
possible lograr originales efectos de
colors. La combustion del clorato
de potasio en combinaci6n con una
sal metAlica produce una llama roja,
verde, amarilla o azul cuyo color
depend de la sal metalica utilizada.
Cuando se introdujeron los nue-
vos ingredients de magnesio y
aluminio en el compuesto quimico
usado en los fuegos artificiales, se
produjo una brillantez jams logra-
da. Con estos advances en la
pirotecnia, se hizo possible alcanzar
.efectos espectaculares, tanto en el
aire como en tierra. En el transcurso


de los afios, se desarrollaron com-
puestos especiales para producer
efectos tales como el ruido que
anuncia el lanzamiento y el silbido
posterior tipico de los fuegos
artificiales.
Hay dos classes de fuegos arti-
ficiales-de "llama" y de "fuerza y
chispa". El primer tipo incluye.
fuegos artificiales con composi-
ciones que produce colors, esta-
llidos con estrellas, artificio cilin-
drico con llamativos efectos, y
dispositivos estdticos como ima-
genes grAficas. Los fuegos artifi-
ciales de::fuerza y chispa produce

fuego de artificio mAs popular,
lanzado como un cohete, pertenece a
esta clase.
Los fuegos artificiales son comer-
cializados por compafiias en todo el
mundo, aunque la gran mayoria son
aun fabricados en China. La creati-
vidad y el ingenio de la pirotecnia
china es notable. Muchos fuegos de
artificio llevan el nombre de las
imagenes, sonidos o colors que
produce, y' einre sds temas ni.s
populares figuran las flores, los
animals y motives celestiales.

Una linea de fuegos artificiales
chinos ofrece "pdjaros piando, mo-
nos, dragones dorados volando, la
flor de loto, una mariposa bailando
y el buitre". Los entusiastas por la
era espacial podrian inclinarse por
ordenar fuegos de artificios llama-
dos "cometas superbrillantes, sat&-
lifes espaciales, j6piter o la guerra de
las Galaxias", o bien "caleidos-
copio", con nombres meramente
caprichosos.
Sea cual sea el nombre, una cosa
es cierta-para la mayoria, los
fuegos artificiales constituyen in-
grediente indispensable para cele-
brar el Cuatro de Julio.

Secundaria de Balboa, y se debe
