Key Personnel Changes Announced


Within Community Services Division


Three key personnel changes have
been announced by the Community
Services Division.
Charles M. Newbury, assistant
chief of the Community Services
Division, has been appointed divi-
sion chief, succeeding Ray M.
Murphy, who has retired; John R.
Haner, superintendent, Building
Management Branch, has been
named assistant chief; and Lyda Lo-
bo, assistant housing manager, Bal-
boa, has been promoted to housing
manager, Balboa.
A native of Mamaroneck, N.Y.,
Newbury joined the Panama Canal
in 1959 as an employee of the Main-
tenance Division. He later transfer-
red to the Construction Division as
a supervisory construction inspector
and was assigned to the Cut Widen-
ing Project from March 1968 to
May 1969, when he went to the
Community Services Division.
Newbury served as facilities
maintenance representative and as-
sistant housing manager in the Cris-


tobal Housing Office and, in 1972,
returned to the Pacific side Balboa
Housing Office as facilities main-
tenance manager for both housing
districts. Appointed housing man-
ager, Southern District in 1974, he
became assistant chief of the divi-
sion in January 1978.
He and his wife, the former
Emily Riley of Balboa, have three
children: Patty and Kathy who are
attending Florida International Uni-
versity in Miami and working part
time for Air Florida Airline, and
Joey who is in his second year at
the Panama Canal College.
Haner is originally from New
York but spent many years in Hous-
ton, Texas. He came to the Panama
Canal organization in 1967 from
Tumaco, Colombia where he was
in private business. Haner. had pre-
viously been in business in other
parts of Latin America as well as
in Israel, Iran, Egypt and Pakistan.
He has occupied the positions of
facilities maintenance representative,

District and has been superinten-
dent, Building Management Branch
since 1974.
The Haners live in Diablo with
their three children, John and
Judith, who attend Balboa High
School, and Joanne, a student at
Diablo Elementary School.
Ms. Lobo was born in Cali, Co-
lombia and came to Panama as a
young child with her parents. She
attended the Colegio Internacional
de Maria Inmaculada and received
a scholarship to study her senior
year of high school in the United
States. She began her career with
the Panama Canal in October 1964
as a clerk-typist in the Community
Services Division and while work-
ing continued her studies at the
University of Panama where she has
received a degree in advertising.
She is currently working on a mas-

Medical Gratuity Leave Updated


The following is an update of
the article on medical gratuity
leave for Atlantic side residents
that appeared in the June 27 issue
of the SPILLWAY.

cable only to Atlantic area residents
who are employees of the Panama
Canal Commission, and then only

Get Legal Recognition

Legal recognition for 38 non-
profit organizations in the Canal
area has been announced by the
Ministry of Commerce and In-
dustry. A list of these organizations
has been released to the Star &
Herald and will appear in the near
future. Legal representatives of the
organizations should pick up the
documents at the offices located on
the 17th floor of the National Lot-
tery Building on Cuba Avenue.
Approximately 100 documents of
legal recognition for non-profit
organizations are still being proces-
sed and are expected to be com-

National Park Tour

The South American Handbook
for 1980 refers to it as the area
where the most impressive pre-
Columbian statues and carvings are
found in all of South America. The
place is San Agustin National Park
in Colombia, and the Balboa YMCA
offers you the opportunity to visit
it over a special Columbus l)ay
weekend tour. The tour will run
from October 10 through October
16, and will include another na-
tional park as well, Tierradentro,
famed for its surrealistic under-
ground burial chambers.
San Agustin National Park encom-
passes an area of about one hun-
dred square miles. Contained with-
in its boundaries are forests, valleys,
and mountains which provide a
spectacular natural setting for the
strange human-like figures that are
scattered throughout the park. The
figures represent the best example
of early Indian sculpture to be
found on the continent, but be-
cause of their remote location, they
were,not uncovered until this cen-
tury. Trips to both San Agustin and
Tierradentro national parks are ad-
ventures in themselves and this tour
will be one to be remembered for
vears to cone.

Pen Women Art
and Photo Show
A combined juried show in crafts
and photography, sponsored by the
Panama Canal Branch of the Na-
tional League of American Pen
Women, will be held on Saturday,
October 4. The two sections will be
judged separately. Entries will be
accepted from 9:30 to 11 a.m. the
same day. Both shows are open to
male and female participants. In the
crafts section, entries are limited to
two per person. Crafts include
work done in metals, enameling on
copper, ceramics, textiles, sculpture
or work in any other permanent
media.
In the photo show two each of

and color transparencies will be
accepted in the following cate-
gories: general, people, scenic and
experimental.
The show ends on Thursday,
October 30. Artists are responsible
for picking up their own work or
for sending a friend or relative to

$1 fee will be levied on entries not
picked up at that time. After two
months, any uncollected artwork
becomes the property of the Branch
to dispose of as the Board of Direc-
tors deems appropriate.

It is Not Only Fine Feathers That Make Fine Birds

A anyone who has visited the
downtown market or the waterfront
in Panama cannot help but notice
flocks of large black birds con-
gregating along the beach, around
garbage disposal areas and near the
market's buildings and stalls. These
somber figures are Black Vultures,
Coragyps atratu ,and according to
Dr. Neal Smith, an ornithologist
with the Smithsonian Tropical Re-
search Center, they are one of the
dominant birds found in populated
areas in Panama and elsewhere in
Central and South America. Three
other vulture species are found in
Panama, the Turkey Vulture, and
the rarer Yellow Headed and King
Vultures, but the Black Vulture is
the most abundantly found resident
vulture.
Vultures are by no means found
only in tropical areas. The Turkey
Vulture and the Black Vulture are
common in the southern United
States, and other species of vul-
tures similar in appearance but
from a different family can be
found almost everywhere in the
world. Although the nature of the
vulture's feeding and dietary habits
are repulsive to most people, re-
search currently being conducted by
the Smithsonian is revealing that
vultures have an interesting way of
life and that their presence pro-
vides a service in the areas where
these birds are found.
Researchers in Panama believe
that the Black Vulture performs a
beneficial service and is important
to the ecology of Panama. Dr.
Smith explains that the Black Vul-
ture is almost completely depen-
dent upon the presence of humans
for its existence and does not
usually live in areas away from
human populations since the waste
which results from human habita-
tion is its main source of food. Just
why this particular bird evolved
into this dependency on humans is
a question which has intrigued
scientists who can only speculate
about the birds' existence during
the centuries before humans came
to the area.. According to Dr. Smith,
a Black Vulture will choose fresh
over decomposed and rotten food-


stuff but that it rarely, if ever, kills
for food. A lot of potential en-
vironmental contaminants along the
beaches, in the bay or in the land-
fills are eaten by these vultures.
Vultures can fly great distances
and many hours in their search for
food. Black Vultures, unlike the
Turkey Vulture, do not have a
well-developed sense of smell and
locate food by sight rather than by
scent.
It is no easy job to trap and tag
over 1,000 vultures, but Univer-
sity of Panama biology students,
Carlos Ayarza and Guillermo Gar-
cia de Paredes succeeded in accom-
plishing this task over a six-month
period. Using fish as bait, the vul-
tures were lured into a six by eight-

foot wire cage with a one-way en-
trance similar to a crab or lobster
trap. The birds could enter but
could not go back out through the
opening. The captured birds were
then tranquilized, examined and
tagged.
These vultures now display num-
bered plastic tags attached to either
the right or left wing. The wing it
is attached to and the color of the
tag-either white, red, yellow or
orange-distinguishes the vulture as
either male or female, young or
adult.
The tagged birds represent vul-
ture populations from the Ancon
and Amador areas, particularly
Ancon Hill and Flamenco Island.
By observing their movements and
habits and the interactions among
them and among others of their
species, information is being gath-
ered which will aid scientists to
better understand the Black Vul-
ture and its place in the ecological
chain.
SThe research project being carried
out by Ayarza and Garcia de Pa-
redes and directed by Dr. Smith is
a continuation of work begun in
August of 1979 in Panama by Pa-
tricia Parker, a graduate student
from the University of North
Carolina who received a Smith-
sonian scholarship to conduct vul-
ture studies here. Ms. Parker has
since returned to North Carolina
where she is continuing to study
the Black Vulture's behavior. The
results of .the studies in North
Carolina and in Panama will be
compared to see what similarities
and differences exist between the
vulture populations.
Of particular interest to Ayarza
is the interaction or lie "social
dynamics" between the vulture
populations from Ancon and Ama-
dor. He explains that Black Vul-
tures search for food, eat and sleep
in large groups, never as "loners."
The one exception to this pattern
is when a pair of vultures goes oil
to choose a nesting site. Black Vul-
tures lay their eggs in scooped out
places in the ground or between
rocks, in grass, old buildings or
anywhere else near the ground.
Also, the same pair of birds returns
year after year to the same nesting
area.


Garcia de Paredes has concen-
trated his research efforts on the
relationship between the age of a
vulture and the development of its
reproductive glands and facial
characteristics. The hypothesis is
that the vulture's age and sex can
be determined by the bird's facial


wrinkles and markings and by its
sexual activity. Unlike many other
birds, there is no outward physical
difference, such as coloring, be-
tween the male and female Black
Vulture. To determine a vulture's
sex, the bird must be tranquilized,
then an incision is made in the side
and an otoscope inserted to enable
the researcher to examine the sexual
glands. After the examination, the
bird is tagged and let go.
Dr. Smith smiled as he recalled
seeing rows of groggy Black Vul-
tures which had just been re-
leased, sitting impassively along the
wall that separates the Smith-
sonian facility from the Corgas
Mortuary next door. After discreet
comments were made about the
flocks of lethargic vultures being
somewhat disconcerting to mortuary
personnel, Sinithsonian workers were
more careful about the manner in
which these birds were let go.
Another interesting question in
this line of research is if vultures


can recognize several generations
of their kin by their faces alone.
Researchers would like to deter-
mine whether or not a vulture will
recognize a relative if that bird's
facial markings are altered.
Scientists have found that nature
has protected the vulture by making


it extremely resistant to toxic sub-
.stances and diseases. Garcia de
Paredes explained that the vulture
is a relatively clean bird and that
some parasites found on other
species of birds are not found on
the vulture. Researchers believe
that the fact that the vulture has
no feathers on its head may make
it easier for the bird to scavenge
for food. The vulture can also clean
itself more easily without feathers
to catch and retain refuse.

The election of the parent and
teacher members of the School Ad-
visory Committee will be the spe-
cial feature of this year's Back-to-
School Night taking place on Tues-
day, September 23, from 7 to 8:45
p.m. at Balboa and Cristobal high,
schools.

Parents will follow their child's
daily schedule and make a short
visit to each class. Teachers will
give brief explanations of the
courses, their requirements and ob-


jectives, and will answer general

Committee at Cristobal will take
place in the hall in front of the
school office before, after and during
the night's activities. An extra 15
minutes for voting will be added
to period four at Balboa High

]Fall I dining dates have been set
lor adult Cirl Scouts. All adults new
to Girl Scouting, leaders and assist-
ant leaders changing troop age
level, and those in need of a re-
fresher course are welcome to
attend.
The Leadership I session defines
the purpose of the Girl Scout pro-
gram, membership, the basic ele-
ments of a troop meeting and troop
management for Brownie and Junior
levels and, of course, some songs
and games are included. The course
will be held on October 4 from
9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Panama
Canal Training Center.
The second session, Leadership
II, covers the total organization of
Girl Scouting, its policies and stand-
ards. It also acquaints participants
with the handbook and leader's
guide and gives in-depth training
for each age level, including cere-
monies, activities, badges and
patches. This session will meet on
October 18 from 9 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. at the Panama Canal Training
Center.
Leadership III is designed to
complete session II and to intro-
duce the eight basic skills of camp-
ing. It meets on October 29 from
7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the same
location as above.
The session in Beginning Out-
door Activities continues with the
eight basic skills and will include
a cookout. It meets November 8
from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the
IAFFA Bohio at Albrook.
A Pre-Planning Session will be
held on.November 12 from. 7.p.m.
to 9:30 p.m. at the Girl Scout
Office.
Overnight Camping is scheduled
for the weekend of November 22
and 23. Participants will take the
8:30 a.m. train to Camp Caribbean
on Saturday and return on the 4
p.m. train on Sunday. The pre-
requisite for this trip is Beginning
Outdoor Activities;

James L. Mize, a shop technician of the General Services Bureau Police
Division, recently became the twenty-first member of the Panama
Canal Commission's Life and Limb Club, whose membership is made
up of employees who have avoided injury or whose injuries have been
minimized because they were wearing prescribed personal protective
equipment. Mize earned his membership when a sudden fire bioke
out while he was working with a cutting torch. The fire burned Mize,
but because he was wearing safety goggles, he was saved from the
possible loss of his eyesight. In the photo, Mize' 'at left, receifies his

Seven PCC Employees Receive Commendations
For Efforts in Rescuing Vessel and Passengers


Seven Panama Canal Commission
employees--a Canal pilot, three
launch operators and three seamen-
have received letters of commenda-
tion from the Marine Director foi-
their efforts in the rescue of 12 pas-
sengers from the yacht Argonaut
when the vessel overturned near Fla-
mingo Island in the Bay of Panama
on the afternoon of August 16.
Capt; John Carey, a pilot on: the
southbound vessel Oriental Queen
saw the yacht Argonaut in distress
and informed Marine Traffic Con-
trol, who immediately dispatched the
launches Skate and Grouper to the
troubled yacht.
Upon disembarking from his ves-


sel, Captain Carey also proceeded to
the scene on board the launch Mako
Sand assisted thelaunch c.~,.ratou
and seamen in pulling the Argo-
naut's 12 passengers, all military
personnel, out of the water.
The launch Mako took the sink-
ing Argonaut in tow and brought
the craft to an area outside the mine
dock breakwater at Fort Amador
where it was:beached for later
salvage... " ''

La Division de Servicios Comu-
nales ha anunciado tres cambios en
su personal clave.
Charles M. Newbury, subjefe de
la Division de Servicios Comunales,
ha sido nombradq jefe de division,
en reemplazo de Roy M. Murphy,
quien se jubil6; John R. Haner, su-
perintendente del Ramo de Admi-
nistraci6n de Edificios, ha sido nom-
brado subjefe y Lyda Lobo, subge-
rente de viviendas en Balboa, ha
sido ascendida a gerente de vivien-
das en' Balboa.
Oriundo de Mamaroneck, Nueva
York, Newbury se incorpor6 al Ca-
nal de Panama en 1959 como em-
pleado de la Divisi6n de Manteni-
miento. Mais tarde se traslad6 a la
Division de Construcci6n como ins-
pector supervisor de construcciones
y fue asignado al Proyecto de Am-
pliaci6n del Corte desde marzo 1968
hasta mayo 1969, cuando fue trans-
ferido a la Divisi6n de Servicios
Comumales.
Newbury sirvi6 como representan-
te de mantenimiento e instalaciones
y subgeiente d. '. i cnl.is en la Ofi-


cina de Vivienda de Crist6bal y en
1972 regres6 a la Oficina de Vivien-
das de Balboa en el sector Pacifico
como gerente de mantenimiento de
instalaciones y estuvo encargado del
mantenimiento de edificios para am-
bos distritos de viviendas. En 1974
fue nombrado jefe de viviendas del
Distrito Sur, y en 1978, subjefe de
la division.
Esti casado con Emily Riley, de.
Balboa y tienen tres hijos: Patty y
Kathy, quienes cursan studios en
la Universidad Florida Internatio-
nal en Miami y .trabajan tiempo
parcial en la Linea Air Florida y
Joey, quien cursa el segundo aiio
en la Universidad del Canal de
PanamAi.
Haner es originario de Nueva
York pero pas6 muchos .aios en
Houston, Texas. Vino a la organi-
zaci6n del Canal de Panama en
1967 procedente de Tumaco, Co-
lombia donde trabajaba en la em-
presa privada. Haner tuvo previa-
mente negocios en otras parties de
latinoam&rica asi como tambien en

Reparan Vertedero ei


El vertedero de Miraflores fue
terminado en el afio 1914, al mismo
tiempo que el Canal, para que fun-
i8D4r. PFpflo una instalaci6n de
control de mundaciones para prote-
teger las Esclusas de Miraflores.
Cada vez que el nivel del agua del
Lago de Miraflores sube a mis de
54% pies, hay que abrir una o va-
rias de las ocho compuertas del ver-
tedero para desviar el exceso de
agua hacia el Rio Grande. De lo
contrario, el agua entraria a la ma-
quinaria que-abre 3 derra las com-
puertas de las esclusas.
Sin embargo, despu6s de sesenta
y seis afios de estar fluyendo el agua
sobre el vertedero, 6ste ha sufrido
sus consecuencias. En un tiempo
s6lo una pequefia cantidad de agua
era recogida durante la bajamar a
lo largo de la base, la proyecci6n
rio abajo del, vertedero. Ahora, la
fuerza de la caida del agua ha ca-
vado alli una hoya de 20 por 30
pies y ha corroido el cimiento de
piedra natural debajo de la base,
debilitando parcialmente la estruc-
tura del vertedero.

BASE DEL VERTEDER


La erosi6n gradual del cimiento
ha dado como resultado que la Di-
recci6n de Ingenieria y Construe-
ci6n haya tenido que poner en eje-
cuci6n un proyecto para la cons-
trucci6n de una cuenca tranquila en
la base-del vertedero, la cual servira
dos prop6sitos: Reforzar el cimien-
to del vertedero y "suavizar" la cai-
da del agua, a fin de protegerlo
contra una nueva erosion.
En mayo de este afio, se le otor-
g6 a la compafia de J. Young el
contrato para construir la cuenca
tranquila. La compafnia se propone
sacar el agua de la hoya en la base
del vertedero, llenarla con concrete
"pobre" concreteo con bajo conte-
nido de cement) y luego cubrirlo
con una losa de concrete reforzado.
Al extreme de la losa de concrete
se construira una pared de bloques
de hormig6n "disipadores de ener-
gia". El agua que cae del vertede-
ro correrA a lo largo del lecho de
concrete, golpearA esta pared, subi-
rA y luego caerA sobre si misma. La
fuerza del agua serA disipada por
los bloques y el agua tranquila se-
guirA entonces su camino rio abajo
y nuevamente al Canal mas al sur.
La cuenca tranquil para el verte-
dero fue disefiada por la Harza En-
gineering Company, una firma con-
sultora de la Comisi6n del Canal de
Panama.
Antes de poder iniciar la cons-
trucci6n de la cuenca tranquila, hay
que construir una ataguia en aguas
alejadas de la base del vertedero.
Todo el proyecto de la cuenca tran-
quila/ataguia serA Ilevado a cabo
en dos etapas.
Ambas etapas incluyen ]a cons-
trucci6n de un sistema de apoyo
que encajarA en la base del vertede-
ro para que proporcione resistencia

maculada y recibi6 una beca para
cursar su 6ltimo afio de escuela se-
cundaria en los Estados Unidos. Ini-
ci6 su carrera con el Canal de Pa-
namA en 1964 como oficinista-meca-
n6grafa en ]a Divisi6n de Servicios
Comunales y mientras trabajaba
continue sus estudios en la Univer-
sidad de PanamA donde recibi6 un
titulo en publicidad. Actualmente
cursa studios en la Universidad de
Santa Maria La Antigua para obte-
ner su maestria en administraci6n.

nen unions entrelazadas a ]o lar-
go de sus bordes y cuando se co-
nectan son virtualmente herm6ti-
cos. Sin embargo, una bomba con-
tinuara en uso para impedir cual-
quier filtraci6n, hasta que se remue-
va la ataguia.
SimultAneamente, se instalarA un
terrapl6n contra el pilote de hojas
de acero con el fin de reforzar la
ataguia y proporcionar una carrete-
.ia temporal que permit el acceso
a las gr6as y otra maquinaria pe-
sadas usadas en la construcci6n de
la ataguia y la cuenca tranquila.

lugar es el Parque Nacional de San
Agustin en Colombia y el YMCA
de ialboa les brinda la oportunidad
de visitarlo en el fin de semana del
Dia de la Raza. La gira tenldra lu-
gar del 10 al 16 de octubre e inclu-
ye tamlbien otro parque national,
Tierradentro, reconocido por sus
tunibas surrealistas bajo tierra.
El Parque Nacional de San Agus-
tin coinprende un Area de aproxinn-
damente cien villas cuadradas.
Dentro de sus limits se encuentran
bosques, valles y montafias que pro-
porcionan un fondo natural espec-
tacular para las extrafias figures casi
humans que se encuentran por
todo el parque. Las figures repre-
sentan el mejor ejemplo de la pri-
mera escultura primitive de los in-
dios encontrada en el continent,
pero debido a su remlota ubicaci6n,
no fueron descubiertas hasta este
siglo. Las giras a los parques na-
cionales de San Agustin y Tierra-
dentro son aventliras por si inismas
y esta gira serni recordada durante

Exhibici6n de Artesania
y de Fotografia

Una exhibici6n combinada de ar-
tesanias y de fotografias con jura-
do, patrocinada por la Liga Nacio-
nal de Mujeres Eruditas America-
nas, Ramo del Canal de PanamAi,
tendra lugar el sAbado 4 de octubre
v las inscripciones se aceptaran ese
mismo dia de 9:30 a 11 a.m. Las
dos seediones serin juzgadas sepa-
radamente. Ambas exhibiciones es-
tAn abiertas a participants de am-
bos sexos. En la secci6n de artesa-
nias, las inscripciones estAn limita-
das a dos por persona y las mismas
incluyen trabajos hechos en meta-
.les, esmalte en cobre, cerAmica,
textiles, escultura o trabajos en
cualquier otro material permanent.
En la exhibici6n de fotografias se
aceptaran dos fotos en blanco y ne-
gro, copias en colors y diapositivas
en colors, en las siguientes catego-
rias: general, personas, paisajes y
experimentales.
La exposici6n terminara el jueves
30 de octubre y es responsabilidad
de los artists recoger sus trabajos
o enviar a una amistad o pariente
para que los recojan ese dia a las
4:30 p.m. Una cuota de $1 serA im-
puesta a los trabajos que no sean
recogidos en esa oportunidad. Des-
pubs de dos meses, cualquier obra
de arte que no haya sido retirada,

Las Plumas Finas No son lo que Embellece las Aves

T oda persona que haya visitado
el mercado piblico de la ciudad o
la zona de los muelles en PanamA
ha podido observer bandadas de
grandes aves negras congregAndose
a lo largo de la playa y en los alre-
dedores de lt ~basureros y de ,los
edificios del mercado. Estas figures
sombrias son Gallinazos (Coragyps
Atratus) y segAn el Dr. Neal Smith,:
ornit6logo en el Centro Smithso-
nian para Investigaciones Tropica-
les, son unas de las aves que predo-
minan en las Areas pobladas en Pa-
nama y otros lugares de Centro y
Sur America. Otras tres species de
gallinazos habitan en PanamA, la
Noneca y los menos comunes como
el Guala y el Gallinazo Rey, pero
el Gallinazo es el que se encuentra
en mayor abundancia.

Los gallinazos no se encuentran
Rnicamente en Panama o en Areas
tropicales. La noneca y el gallinazo
son comunes en el sur de los Esta-
dos Unidos, y otras species de ga-
llinazos similares en apariencia, pe-
ro de distinta familiar, pueden en-
contrarse en casi todas parties del
rnundo. Aunque la naturaleza de
los hAbitos de alimentaci6n y dieta
del gallinazo son repulsivos a mui-
chas personas, una investigaci6n que
leva a calo actualinente el Smith-
sonian estA revelando que los galli-
nazos tienen mn nodo de vida inte-
resante y que so. presencia propor-
ciona un servicio en las ctreas donde
existen estas aves.
Los investigadores pinian iue el
gallinazo desiempelia un servicio
beneficioso N que es important para
la ecologia tde Panlami . E Dr. Smith
explica que el gallinazo depend
casi totalmente dIe la presencia de
los humnainos mpra so ecxistencia y
per Id general no vive eln areas ale-
jadas de las pollaciones ya que el
despcrdicioi que sc genera en las
misinas es si principal fuente de
aliirletacini. La razin! por la enial
esta ave cli partlenloar cvoluciolno
hasta llegar a esta depenldencia de
los huoianos cs 'una pregtnta (que
ha intrigado a los cientiicos, quic-
nes s61o puteden especular acerca de
su existencia durante los siglos an-
teriores a la legada del honmbre al
area. Scg6n el Dr. Smith, si bien
cl gallinazo prcfiere alimentos fres-
oIs i los descompuestos y podridos,
raramente mata para alimentarse.


Una gran cantidad de contaminado-
res ambientales potenciales que
existen a lo largo de las playas, en
la bahia o en los crematorios son
ingeridos por estos gallinazos.
Los gallinazos pueden volar lar-
gas distancias y por.muchas horas
en busca de alimentos. A diferencia
de la noneca, no tienen el sentido
del olfato muy desarrollado y loca-
lizan la comida con la vista, mis
bien que por el olor..
No es tarea fAcil el atrapar y mar-
car mas de 1,000 gallinazos, pero
los estudiantes de biologia de la
Universidad de PanamA, Carlos
Ayarza y Guillermo Garcia de Pa-
redes llevaron a cabo esta tarea con
6xito durante un period de seis
meses. Usando pescado como car-
nada, los gallinazos fueron atraidos'


Los gallinazos en las dreas de
Anc6n y Amador tienen rnds
colorido en estos dias debido a
las etiquetas de identificaci6n del
STRI, que son de various colors.


a una jaula de alambre de seis por
ocho pies con una sola entrada, si-
milar a la trampa para coger can-
grejos y langostas. Las aves podian
entrar pero no podian salir por la
abertura. Entonces las aves captu-
radas fueron tranquilizadas, exami-
nadas y marcadas.
Estos gallinazos portan ahora
unas etiquetas plAsticas con niime-
ros, fijadas al ala derecha o izquier-
da. El ala al cual va fijada y el
color de la etiqueta-ya sea blanco,
rojo, amarillo o anaranjado-les dis-
tingue como macho o hembra, jo-
ven o adulto.
Las aves que han sido marcadas-
representan poblaciones de gallina-
zos en las Areas de Anc6n y Ama-
dor, particularmente el Cerro An-
c6n y la Isla Flamenco. Mediante
la observaci6n de sus movimientos
y hAbitos y la interacci6n entire ellos
y entire otros de su especie, se esta
recopilando informaci6n que ayudarA
a los cientificos a comprender mejor
al gallinazo y su lugar en la cadena
ecol6gica.
El proyecto de investigaci6n que
estAn llevando a cabo Ayarza y
Garcia de Paredes y que es dirigido
por el Dr. Smith, es una continua-
ci6n del trabajo que inici6 en agos-
to de 1979 en PanamA, Patricia Par-
ker, estudiante de la escuela de gra-
duados de la Universidad de Caro-
lina del Norte que recibi6 una beca
del Smithsonian para realizar estu-
dios sobre los gallinazos aqui. La
Sra. Parker regres6 a Carolina del
Norte done continiia estudiando
el colnportamiiento del gallinazo. Se
comparaira, los resultados de los es-
tudios en (Carolina del Norte y en
Panaml i Apara inicontrar las simili-
tudes ) diferencias que existen ein-
tre las poblaciones de gallinazos.
D)e intcrcs particular para Ayarza
es la intcracci6ni o sea la "dinaimi-
ca .. il ' centre las poblaciones de
gallinazos de Anc6n y Amador. Ex-
plic6 que los gallinazos Iuscan co-
mida, come y duermen en grandcs
gripos, nunca como "solitarios". La
unica cxcepcion a esta rcgla es
cuando una pareja se separa para
seleecionar un lugar done anidar.
Los gallinazos ponei sus huevos en
hoyos eavados ern el suelo o entire
las rocas, en la hierba, en edificios
viejos o en cnalquier otro lugar
cerca del suclo. Ademais, el misnmo
par de aves regresa, aio tras afio a
la misma Area done ha anidado.
Garcia de Paredes ha concentrado
sus esfuerzos de investigaci6n en la
relaci6n entire la edad de un galli-
nazo y el desarrollo de sus glAndu-


las reproductivas y sus caracteristi-
cas faciales. La hip6tesis es que la
edad y el sexo del gallinazo pueden
determinarse por las arrugas y mar-
cas faciales del ave y por su acti-
vidad sexual. A diferencia de mu-
chas otras aves, no existe diferencia
fisica exterior, tal como el color, en-


tre cl gallinazo macho y la hem-
bra. Para determinar el sexo del
gallinazo, hay que tranquilizarlo,
entonces se Ie haee una incision en
el costado v se l introduce iIn
otoscopio para que el1 investigator
pueda examinar las gl'ndulas sexiia-
les. Despu6s del examuen, se le colo-
ca una ctiqueta a ave y se le
deja ir.
El Dr. Smith.sonrie al recorder
la vez lque vio hileras de ,,II.,,, ..
atontados que acababan de soltar,
sentados indiferentemente en la pa-
red que separa el clificio Smithso-
nian de la Morgue del Gorgas. Des-
pu's que se hicieron comentarios
diseretos acerca de lo desconcertan-
tc que fue para el personal de ]a
morgue ver la bandada de gallina-
zos sofiolientos en ese lugar, los
empleados del Smithsonian tuvieron
cuidado en la manera c6mo dejaban
ir estas aves.
Otra pregunta interesante en esta
linea de investigaci6n es si los ga-
Ilinazos pueden reconocer a varias
generaciones de sus familiares por
sus caras 6nicamente. A los inves-


tigadores le gustaria determinar si
un gallinazo reconocera o no a un
pariente si las caracteristicas facia--
les de esa ave son alteradas.
Los cientificos han descubierto
que la naturaleza ha protegido a los
gallinazos hacibndolos sumamente
* resistentes a las sustancias t6kicas y


a enfermedades. Garcia de Paredes
explic6 que el gallinazo es un ave
relativamente limpia v que algunos
paraIsitos clue se ncuiientran en otras
species no se encuentran en el ga-
llinazo. Los investigadores estiman
que el heeho de que el gallinazo no
tenga plnmas en la cabeza, le faci-
lita powder encontrar alimento entire
los desechos. El gallinazo tambi'n
pucde limpiarse con im is facilidad
por no tender plumas que recogen y
retienen la basura.
A\arza, Carcia de Paredes y el
Dr. Smith estan de acuerdo en que
muy poeo se sabe acerca del galli-
nazo y que apenas ha comenzado
sui investigaci6n v la de sus habitos.
1Por qu6 el gallinazo no puede vo-
lar cuando esta mojado? Por (quB
son negros? cCuales son sus hibitos
migratorios? lSolamente comen ca-
rrofia? Estas v muchas otras pre-
guntas estAn afin por contestarse
sobre estas notables y poco com-
prendidas aves que se han conver-
tido en una parte tan integral de-
la relaci6n de la naturaleza con el
hombre.

James L, Mize, tdcnico de taller de la Divisi6n de Policia de la Direc-
ci6n de Servicios Comunales, se convirti6 recientemente en el vige-
simoprimer miembro del Club de Seguridad Industial de la Comis6on
del Canal de Panama. La membresia de dicho club estd compuegta de
empleados que han evitado lesionarse o cuyas lesions fueron m inimas
debido a que usaban el equipo de protecci6n personal de rigor. Mize
obtuvo su membresia debido a un incendio que se inici6 de pronto
mientras trabajaba con una antorcha de acetileno. Las llamas le oca-
sionaron quemaduras, pero gracias a que estaba usando lentes de
seguridad se salv6 de una possible pdrdida de la vista. En la foto, Mize,
a la izquierda, recibe su certificado de membresia de Virgil E. Voyles,
alcaide interino de la Penitenciaria de Gamboa.

y tres marineros-recibieron cartas
de encomio del Director de marina
por sus esfuerzos durante el rescate
de 12 pasajeros del yate Argonaut,
que zozobr6 cerca de la Isla Fla-.
menco, en la Bahia de Panama, la
tarde del 16 de agosto.
El CapitAn John Carey, practice
a bordo de la nave Oriental Queen
que viajaba hacia el sur, vi6 al yate
Argonaut en apuros e inform al
Control de TrAfico Maritimo, el cual
inmediatamente despach6 las lan-
chas Skate y Grouper para prestarle
ayuda.
Al desembarcar de la nave, el Ca-
pitain Carey se dirigi6 al lugar de


los hechos a bordo de la lancha

de lancha y mariners a sacar del
agua a los 12 pasajeros del Argo-
naut, que eran todos militares
