A Message From the Administrator

This week of September 14 through 20, 1980 has been designated
National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1968, a Joint Resolution of
Congress set aside a week in September to attempt to acknowledge
the vast contributions to and benefits derived by the United States
of America from the Hispanic community.
The central role that Hispanic people have played in the nation's
development is traced to the earliest days of our history. Contribu-
tions of language, culture, food, music, science and industry have
been made by generations of Hispanic-Americans to the growth and
development of the United States. It is in the spirit of recognition
of these contributions that the Congress of the United States set
aside a National Hispanic Heritage Week.
The Panama Canal Commission, by virtue of being located in a
Hispanic nation, the Republic of Panama, has benefited from con-
tributions made by Hispanic people since the time of the Canal
construction. It can be readily concluded that all aspects of Com-
mission activities and life are rich in Hispanic contributions.
As we commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Week, it is
fitting that we consider not only the significant contributions of the
Spanish-speaking members of this organization but also those of all
the other members, and their families, together with our customers
and neighbors, all of whom make the Panama Canal Commission
the truly unique and effective operational organization that it is.

Program Set for
A Hispanic program will be held
in observance of Hispanic Heritage
Week from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday,
September 19, at the Panama Canal
College Auditorium. The program
is sponsored by the Hispanic Em-
ployment Program of the Office of
Equal Opportunity. The Panama-
nian Tourist Institute (IPAT) and
the Department of Artistic Expres-
sions of the University of Panama
(DEXA) will also participate. Ad-
mission is free.
The music and dances represent-

will be presented, including such
local groups as the guitar trio Los
Gamas and La Estudiantina de La
Salle, as well as songs and dances
from Puerto Rico and Panama and
Spanish dancers sponsored by the
Embassy of Spain.
Traditional foods including des-
serts will be prepared and offered
for sale by a number of groups and
embassies.
Everyone is invited to come and-
enjoy a Hispanic evening.


Many people have had the frustrating experience of driving along
trying to find an address only to discover that the street sign is mis-
sing. What is a minor annoyance in one case is a potentially dangerous
situation in another. Emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire
trucks and police cars rely on these street signs to direct them to the
proper address of individuals who need assistance. Any delay in
these vehicles responding to an emergency call could endanger life
and property.
According to Lt. R. F. Brayton of the Commission Police Division,
many street signs are missing in the Canal area. The Transito branch
of Panama's National Guard plans to replace these signs, but Lt. Bray-
ton urges anyone who finds a street sign or knows where one is to
please return it to the Police Division so that it can be replaced as
soon as possible.

"Blue Runner" Ready To Go


The launch "Blue Runner" has
recently been renovated, and the
Administrator has approved its use
by all permanent employees of the
Panama Canal Commission. The
launch will be scheduled for
two 2-day/i-night trips per week
throughout the year at a charge of
$240 per trip. Trips will be sched-
uled for Tuesday-Wednesday and
Saturday-Sunday. The $240 charge
will be assessed for each trip re-
gardless of whether the boat is used
for one or two days.

The launch is limited to six pas-
sengers and the employee assigned
the boat must be on board as a pas-
senger during the entire trip. The
crew will consist of a captain and
a crewman. Fishing equipment, bait,
ice, cooking and eating utensils,
sheets, pillows, towels and table-
cloths will be provided. Passengers


must furnish their own food and
beverages.

The Office of the Director of
Protocol will administer and sched-
ule the launch. A schedule will be
published in the SPILLWAY on the
first Friday of each month designat-
ing which units are eligible to use
the boat the following month. Each
bureau or unit will be responsible
for soliciting applications and de-
termining in an equitable manner
who will be assigned the launch.
Names of the assignees will be
forwarded to the Protocol Office.

Launch trips have been assigned
for the year based generally upon
the number of employees in each
unit. Units which are not included
in the October schedule will appear
in subsequent months. All trips are
subject to cancellation due to emer-

of the launch.

that freedom of movement will be

abstain from any Panamanian or

All mail matter received for these

Assistance Unit with a stamped en-
dorsement that reads, "Addressee
serviced by the Postal Administra-
tion of Panama. Mail matter must
be addressed to the Republic of
Panama, NOT Canal Zone, and
must be prepaid at appropriate in-
ternational postal rate."

Therapy Seminars at YMCA-
Individuals interested in attending
the seminars with Dr. Aubry at the
Balboa Armed Forces YMCA, are

tember 15 to register. Dr. Aubry, a
family systems consultant and hyp-
notherapist from California, will be
in Panama from October 8 to 13 to
conduct six seminars aimed at im-
proving the quality of life, especial-
ly during stressful times of change.
The subjects of the six-hour sem-
inars are expected to interest a broad
segment of the community. They
are: "Techniques of Self Hypnosis"
on October 9; "Child Guidance
Techniques for Parents and Educa-
tors" on October 10; "Hypnotherapy
for Therapists" on October 11: and
"Family Therapy Theory and Tech-
niques" on October 8 and 12. The
last two workshops are accredited for
6 hours each for nursing re-licen-
sure. "Psychology and the Commun-
ity" will be presented on October
13 as a follow-up seminar for all
the previous seminars and is offered

Something Fishy Has Been Going On


In the Depths of Third Locks Cut Lake

A year and half have passed since
the Sanitation Division and the En-
gineering and Construction Bureau
began a joint experiment by placing
weed-eating whlte amur fish in the
'third Locks Cut Lake near Gatun,
and at this point the results look
promising.
The project, with the cooperation
of Dr. Melvin Borehain, the Pan-
ama Canal Commission's medical
entomologist, was designed to serve
a dual purpose. One was the control
of mosquitoes through the removal
of their Hydrilla breeding sites along
the shoreline. This type of mosquito
control through elimination of the
source is basic to the construction
era concept proposed by Col. Wil-
liam Crawford Corgas and conti-
nues to be valid today.
The second and major reason was
to follow the rate of weed reduc-
tion by the feeding activity of a
known number of amur fish. The
amurs eat only aquatic weeds and
can consume large amounts very
quickly.
Hydrilla is an aquatic weed that
grows in fresh water, forming dense
masses of stems and foliage that fill
in lagoons and other lakeshore
areas, making them unsuitable for
fishing, swimming or boating. The
weed grows rooted to the bottom
of the lake on intertwining stems
of up to 35 feet in length which
reach to just below the surface of
the water. The Hydrilla buffers
wave action, leaving the water un-
disturbed and making a good breed-
ing area for mosquitoes. The dense
stems: and leaves protect the ' ios-
quito larvae from being eaten by
fish and also trap warm water,
which promotes the growth of al-
gae on which the larvae feed.
The E & C Bureau is using the-
fish on a much larger scale in Gatun
Lake to determine if this is a vi-
able method to control the Hydrilla
growth that poses a hinderance to
navigation along parts of the Canal
waterway. If successful, this biolog-


ical control of aquatic weeds could
lead to less need for chemical her-
bicide applications, reducing an)y
environmental effects of the chem-
ical, and might result in some sav-
ings to the Commission.
No evaluation has yet been made
of this larger project. Results are
not expected to be observable until
about three years after the amurs
were introduced into the lake, which
means that evaluation may be ex-
pected to begin around August of
next year.
The amur project at the Third
Locks Cut Lake began in August of
1978, when about 340 white amur
fingerlings were separated from the
last air shipment of the fish to ar-
rive for release into Gatun Lake.
These fish were transported across


the Isthmus to the Sanitation Divi-
sion's entomology laboratory at
Coco Solo Hospital for rearing in
a 4,000 gallon tank.
The largest of this group were
just under two inches long. The little
amurs were fed on a diet of Hydril-
la weeds and a special flake food
supplement until they had reached
a size of six to ten inches in length.
It was believed that fish of this size
would be better able to survive at-
tacks by predators, such as the
peacock bass.
By January 18, 1978, 100 fish had
attained this stage of growth and
were planted in the Third Locks
Cut Lake. The remaining fish
reached this size in April and were
released into the lake for a total
introduction of 274 white amur.


Prior to the initial release, the
Dredging Division of the E&C Bu-
retu installed a spillway structure
at the single outlet point at the
north end of the lake. It consisted
of two large metal pipe culverts
welded together, each having a
removable "fish screen" to prevent

the amur from escaping from their
new home.
The project suffered only one set-
back. The fish, just before the
April release, were inadvertently fed
Hydrilla taken from an area in Ga-
tun Lake which had been recently
treated with copper sulfate herbi-
cide. Copper is highly toxic to fish
and enough had been absorbed by
the plants to cause over 30 amur to
die in the holding tank. The largest
fish were killed, as they had eaten
the most contaminated weed.
Boreham said, however, that the
fish kill had a redeeming feature in
that it was learned through a fol-
low-up chemical analysis that weeds
containing more than six to seven
parts per million of copper would
be lethal if consumed by the amur.
This incident, he said, alerted the
Commission to the need to limit
the use of the chemical around
areas in Gatun Lake where these
fish are likely to feed.
Aerial photos taken of the Third
Locks Cut Lake prior to the amur
release have been used as a base-
line to compare effects of the feed-
ing activity of these fish on the'
Hydrilla coverage. By mid-August
of 1979, about 320 tons of Hydrilla
had been destroyed, eliminating
about 70 perceiit of the mosquito
?fore and after" diagrams of the northern part of the Third Locks Cut breeding habitat. However, a rapid

to the pre-release coverage.


Both the rapid destruction and
the re-growth came as a surprise.
To begin with, considering the small
size of the fish, they could not have
consumed such a large amount of
the weed. What apparently hap-
pened, according to Boreham, is
that while feeding, the fish broke
off many of the rooted stems, thus
killing the upper portions of the
plants. These plants then decayed,
releasing massive amounts of nu-
trients into the water, which caused
a rapid re-growth of the weed.
Because the fish are much larger
this year, an even greater effect
was seen. By July 1980, surveys re-
vealed that 83 percent -of the sur-
face weed had been removed. Al-
though weed re-growth is again ex-
pected from September through
December, Boreham believes that
since the fish are now larger that
they will remove an even greater
percentage of the Hydrilla begin-
ning next dry season when the weed
has slowed its growth.
One of the characteristics of the
white amur is that it occasionally
extends its long dorsal fin above the
water surface as it swims, making
it look a bit like a shark. The amur
were thus identified in a recent
sighting by Dr. Boreham and his
two bio-aids, Pastor Chaves and
Inocencio Leguia. They estimated
the fish to be 36 inches long, about
the size expected considering that
the white amur is known to grow
very rapidly in warm waters.
Continuing surveys for mosquito
breeding at the lake have shown
a dramatic decrease, with larval
counts being only 10 percent of
the levels seen within the weed
mats in past years. Light trap
catches of adult mosquitoes made
at the nearby Mindi Riding Club
stables have shown a concurrent
95 percent reduction in Anopheles
mosquitoes in the past six months.
Boreham attributes this to the suc-
cess of the amur in eliminating the
breeding sites along the shore of
the lake.
He also noted that only two ap-
plications of light larvicidal oil have
been needed to control breeding
and that these were required only
during the dry season -when the
weed covered some ten acres of
the Third Locks site. Such spray-
ing provides temporary control and
would normally be required every
two weeks during peak breeding.
This amounts to a considerable out-
lay of manpower and materials. The
amur have already provided savings
to the Commission in this regard.
Both the E & C Bureau and the
Health & Safety Office's Sanita-
tion Division, Boreham said,. have
been able to obtain valuable data
from the observations of this con-
trolled area. He believes that both
aspects of the dual experiment will
prove to be successful. He and his
staff will continue to monitor the
results of the white amur introduc-
tion into this 70-acre lake which is
truly a "weed eaters" paradise.

country along with the APO or
FPO in addresses for mail being
sent overseas may delay delivery
according to U.S. Postal Service
officials.
Persons sending mail to an
overseas location, such as Panama,
through the Military Postal System
can ensure prompt mail service by
using only the correct APO or FPO
addresses. The foreign city and
country should not be included in
the address.
A properly addressed letter in-
cludes the individual's name, a PSC


box number and the correct APO or
FPO identifier. An example of cor-
rect address for Panama Canal Com-

When the Navy's brand new
destroyer tender USS "Yellowstone"
made its maiden transit of the Canal
last weekend, on board were nine
women officers. One of them was
Canal Zone College alumnus and
1971 Isthmian College Club Scholar-
ship recipient Norma Comez, now
a lieutenant on temporary assign-
ment to the ship with an unusual
job to perform.

The "Yellowstone," a repair ves-
sel built and commissioned on the
West Coast, is traveling to a new
home port in Norfolk, Va. by way
of Acapulco, Panama and the Virgin
Islands. Lt. Comez' job during the
cruise is to conduct "women at sea"
workshops for the male supervisors
of the ship's 850 sailors in order to
prepare them for the 5 women
officers and 100 enlisted women that
will become a permanent part of
the crew in Norfolk. She herself
is stationed in Norfolk with the
Human Resource Management
Center.

Women's role in the Navy since
1860 is part of the historical back-
ground presented to the supervisors
by Lt. Gomez. Then its on to pre-
sent day concerns-the fears and ex-
pectations that the men have about
having women on board, what prob-
lems have arisen since the Navy
began sending women to sea four
or five years ago and how the prob-
lems were solved.

The workshops have gone very
well, Lt. Comez says, as has her
own Navy career. She joined un in
1974 after completing a degree as
a speech and hearing therapist at
Southwest Texas State University
and has had tours of duty in Hawaii
and California. She'll be getting
out of the Navy in December and
will take a job in private industry,
but plans to stay in the U.S. Naval
Reserve.

Three new MEDDAC Commu-
nity Health Nursing offices will open
soon on the Pacific side of the Isth-
mus, and one will close. The
changes are part of an effort to
bring community health nursing
closer to its customers. The Coco
Solo Army Hospital facility will not
be affected by these changes.
The new offices will be in Sec-
tion B of Corgas Army Hospital,
Building 519 at Fort Clayton and
Building 192 at Howard Air Force
Base.
Today is the last day of operation
for the Community Health Center
at Building 721 in Balboa. The Fort
Clayton location will be operational
on Monday, September 15, while
the Gorgas Army Hospital offices
will be ready for business on Sep-
tember 18. The Howard Well Baby/
Well Child Clinic will operate only
on Friday and opens on October 3.

Un Mensaje del Administrador
La semana del 14 al 20 de septiembre de 1980 ha sido escogida
como la Semana Nacional del Patrimonio Hispdnico. En 1968, una
Resoluci6n Conjunta del Congreso reserve una semana del mes de
septiembre para que durante ella se hiciera un reconocimiento a las
vastas contribuciones que ha hecho la comunidad hispdnica y los
beneficios que ha derivado de ellas los Estados Unidos de America.
El papel principal que elpueblo hispdnico ha desempefnado en el
desarrollo de la naci6n data desde los primeros dias de nuestra his-
toria. Generaciones de hispanoamericanos han contribuido con su
idioma, cultural, comida, musica, ciencia e industrial al crecimiento
y desarrollo de los Estados Unidos. Fue en ese espiritu de agradeci-
miento por estas contribuciones que el Congreso decidi6 crear una
Semana Nacional del Patrimonio Hispdnico.
En virtud de su ubicaci6n en una naci6n hispana, la Repcblica
de Panamd, la Comisi6n del Canal de Panamd se ha beneficiado de
las contribuciones hechas por los hispanos desde la epoca de la
construcci6n del Canal. Fdcilmente se puede concluir que todos los
aspects de las actividades y vida de la Comisi6n se han enriquecido
con las contribuciones hispdnicas.

Numerosas personas han tenido la frustrante experiencia de con-
ducir de un lado a otro tratando de encontrar una direcci6n s61o para
descubrir que falta el letrero con el nombre de la calle. Lo que es
una inconveniencia menor en una instancia, es un peligro en potencia
en otra. Los vehiculos de emergencia tales como ambulancias, auto-
bombas y carros de la policia confian en estos letreros para dirigirse
a la.direcci6n correct de las personas que necesitan ayuda. Cualquier
demora ocasionada a estos vehiculos cuando acuden a un lamado de
emergencia, puede poner en peligro la vida o propiedad de las personas.
Segin el Teniente R. F. Brayton, de la Divisi6n de Policia de la
Comisi6n, se han perdido muchos letreros con el nombre de las calls
en el Area del Canal. La Direcci6n de TrAnsito de la Guardia Nacional
de PanamA proyecta reemplazarlos, pero el Tte. Brayton insta a cual-
quiera que halle o sepa d6nde se encuentra uno de estos letreros, lo
devuelva a la Divisi6n de Policia para que se pueda reponer lo mais
pronto possible.


"Blue Runner


La lancha "Blue Runner" fue re-
acondicionada recientemente y el
Administrador ha aprobado su uso
por todos los empleados permanen-
tes de la Comisi6n del Canal de Pa-
nami. La lancha hard dos viajes
semanales de dos dias y una noche
cada uno, durante todo el afio, a un
costo de $240 por viaje. Los viajes
se programaran para martes y misr-
coles y s'ibado y domingo. El cargo
de $240 serA cobrado por cada via-
je sin considerar si se us6 la lancha
uno o dos dias.

La lancha tiene capacidad para
un maximo de seis personas y el
empleado a quien se le asigne la
lancha debe estar a bordo como
pasajero durante todo el viaje. La
tripulaci6n estarA compuesta de un
capitan y un marinero. Se propor-
cionarA equipo para pescar, carna-
da, hielo, utensilios de cccina y de
comer, sAbanas, almohadas, toallas
y manteles. Los pasajeros deben lle-

La Oficina del Director de Proto-

lancha. El primer viernes de cada
mes se publicarA en el SPILLWAY un
itinerario en el que se indicarA las

en base al nimero de empleados de
cada unidad. Las unidades que no
estin incluidas en el itinerario de
octubre saldrAn publicadas en los

emergencies o por requerimiento

La elecci6n de los legisladores
panamefios tendran lugar el domin-
go 28 de septiembre. Se tiene en-
tendido que-se permitirA el libre
movimiento ese dia, por lo tanto,

tengan que trabajar no tendran nin-
guna dificultad en ir y venir de sus
lugares de empleo.
Se recuerda a los empleados esta-
dounidenses y sus dependientes el
requerimiento del Tratado en el
sentido de que deben abstenerse de
participar en cualquier actividad po-
litica en la Repiblica de PanamA,
asi como tambi6n de intervenir en
los asuntos internos de la Reptiblica.


Asi mismo, el C6digo de Conduc-
ta de la Comisi6n require que los
empleados estadounidenses y no'es-
tadounidenses se abstengan de ha-
cer cualquier actividad political pa-
namefia o estadounidenses durante
las horas hibiles o de servicio con
la Comisi6n y que tales empleados
no deberin usar sus posiciones en
la Comisi6n para promover activi-
dades political panamefias.
Se da por sentado que cualquier
empleado que decide servir en una
posici6n political, ya sea por
nombramiento o elecci6n, tendrA
.que renunciar a su empleo en la
Comisi6n.

brado recientemente Director Eje-
cutivo del YMCA de los Servicios
Armados de Balboa, en reemplazo
de William E. Scofield, quien ha
sido trasladado a Oceanside, Cali-
fornia. Hershey ocupaba anterior-
mente el cargo de Director Ejecu-
tivo del YMCA de Crist6baly tiene
a su haber 17 aios de experiencia

Algo Raro Ocurre en lo Profundo del


Lago del Corte de la Tercera Esclusa

Ha pasado un afio y medio desde
que la Divisi6n de Saneamiento y
la Direcci6n de Ingenieria y Cons-
trucci6n iniciaron el experiment
conjunto de colocar carpas comedo-
ras de past (Amur Blanco) en el
Lago del Corte de la Tercera Esclu-
sa cerca de Gatin y hasta el mo-
mento, los resultados son prome-
tedores.
El proyecto fue concebido, con la
colaboraci6n del Dr. Melvin Bore-
ham, entom6logo de la Comisi6n
del Canal de Panama, para ser-
vir dos prop6sitos. Uno, el control
de mosquitos mediante la elimina-
ci6n de la Hidrila, sus criaderos, a
lo largo de la orilla. Este tipo de
control de mosquitos mediante la
eliminaci6n de la fuente, es la base
del concept que fue propuesto por
el Coronel William Crawford Gor-
gas en la Apoca de la construcci6n
y que continia teniendo validez
hoy dia.
El segundo y principal prop6si-
to era observer la proporci6n de
reducci6n de la maleza debido a la
actividad de alimentaci6n de un de-
terminado nAmero de las carpas. Las
carpas s61o comen hierba acuAtica
y pueden consumer grandes cantida-
des rapidamente.
La Hidrila es una hierba acuati-
ca que crece en agua dulce forman-
do espesas masas de tallos y follaje
que rellenan lagunas y otras areas
en la orilla del lago, haci6ndolas in-
adecuadas para la pesca, nataci6n
o navegaci6n. La maleza echa rai-
ces en el fondo del lago y sus tallos
entrelazados, de hasta 35 pies de
largo, Ilegan hasta just debajo de
la superficie ,del agua. La Hidrila
amortigua el movimiento de las olas,
dejando el agua serena convirti6n-
dola asi en un buen criadero de
mosquitos. Los densos tallos y ho-
jas protegen lIs larvas del mosquito
de ser ingeridas por los peces y
tambi6n atrapan el agua tibia, lo
cual estimula el crecimiento de al-
gas con las que se alimentan las
larvas.
La Direcci6n de Ingenieria y
Construcci6n estA usando el pez en
una mayor escala en el Lago Gatin
para determinar si el m6todo es via-
ble para controlar el crecimiento
de la Hidrila que present un estor-
bo a la navegaci6n a lo largo de


ciertos lugares del Canal. Si tiene
6xito, este control biol6gico de las
malezas acuaticas llevaria a una
menor necesidad de aplicar herbici-
das quimicos, reduciendo cualquier
efecto ambiental del product qui-
mico y resultar en ahorros para la
Comisi6n.
A6n no se han hecho evaluacio-
nes de este proyecto en gran escala
y no se espera ver los resultados
hasta tres afios despu6s que las car-
pas fueron introducidas en el lago,
lo cual significa que se puede espe-
rar que la evaluaci6n comience
aproximadamente en agosto del
pr6ximo afio.
El proyecto de las carpas en el
Corte de la Tercera Esclusa del
Lago comenz6 en agosto de 1978,
fecha en que aproximadamente 340
pececillos de la carpa comedora de
past fueron separados del Altimo
embarque a6reo que lleg6, para ser
colocados en el Lago Gat6n. Estos
peces fueron transportados a trav6s
del Istmo hasta el laboratorio de
entomologia de la Divisi6n de Sa-
neamiento en el Hospital Coco Solo,


para criarlos en un tanque de 4000
galones.
Los peces mas grandes de este
grupo median apenas dos pulgadas
de largo. Las pequefias carpas fue-
ron alimentadas con Hidrila y un
alimento suplemento especial de ho-
juelas hasta que Ilegaron a un ta-
maiio de seis y diez pulgadas de
largo. Se estimaba que los peces de
este tamafio tendrian mejor oportu-
nidad de sobrevivir los ataques de
los peces predatores, como el sar-
gento.
Al 18 de enero de 1979, 100
peces alcanzaron esta etapa del cre-
cimiento y fueron colocados en el
Lago del Corte de la Tercera Es-
clusa. El resto de los peces alcanz6
este tamafio en abril y se les coloc6
en el lago, aumentando el total a
274 carpas.
Antes de la introducci6n initial,
la Division de Dragado de la Direc-
ci6n de Ingenieria y Construcci6n
habia instalado una estructura de
vertedero en el inico punto de sali-
da en el extreme norte del lago,

que consistia en dos grandes tube-
rias de desagiie de metal soldadas
juntas, cada una con una malla
removible para impedir que las
carpas se escaparan de su nueva
habitaci6n.
El proyecto sufri6 s6lo un atraso.
Poco antes de soltar los peces en
abril, se les aliment6, inadvertida-
mente con Hidrila tomada de un
Area del Lago Gat6n que habia sido
tratada con herbicida de sulfato de
cobre. El cobre es sumamente t6xi-
co para los peces y las plants ha-
bian absorbido lo suficiente como

para ocasionar la muerte a mAs de
30 carpas en el tanque criadero.
Los peces mas grandes murieron, ya
que habian ingerido la mayor can-
tidad de maleza contaminada.
Sin embargo, dijo Boreham, la
muerte de los peces tuvo un aspec-
to compensador ya que al hacerse
un analisis quimico, se pudo esta-
blecer que la maleza que contenga
mAs de seis a siete parties por mill6n
de cobre seria mortal si fuera inge-
rida por ]a carpa. Este incident,
dijo, puso a a a Comisi6n sobre avi-
so de la necesidad de limitar el uso
del product quimico en Areas del
Lago Catin donde probablemente
se :alimentarian estos peces.
Fotografias areas del Lago del
Corte de la Tercera Esclusa, toma-
das antes de soltar las carpas, han
sido usadas coma punto de refe-
rencia para comparar los efectos de
la actividad de alimentaci6n de es-
tos peces donde hay presencia de
Hidrila. Para mediados de agosto de
1979, aproximadamente 320 tonela-
das de Hidrila habian sido destrui-
das, eliminando cerca de un 70 per
cientos del habitat donde se crian los
mosquitos. Sin embargo, en los si-
guientes cuatro meses, ocurri6 un
rApido recrecimiento hasta un punto
casi igual al de antes de soltar las
carpas.
La rpida destrucci6n y el re-
crecimiento fue una sorpresa. Para
empezar, si se toma en consideraci6n


el tamafio pequefio de los peces, es-
tos no podian haber consumido tal
cantidad de la maleza. Lo que apa-
rentemente ocurri6, segun Boreham,
es que mientras se alimentaban, los
peces partisan muchos de los tallos
destruyendo asi las parties superio-
res de las plants y al podrirse 6stas

trientes en el agua, lo cual caus6
un rApido recrecimiento de la
maleza.
Debido a que los peces estan
mas grandes este afio, se ha obser-
vado un efecto a6n mayor. Los es-
tudios revelaron que para julio de
1980, un 83 por ciento de la maleza
superficial habia sido eliminada.
Aunque se espera el recrecimiento
de la maleza entire septiembre y
diciembre, Borham opina que como
los peces son mas grandes ahora,
eliminarAn un mayor porcentaje de
la Hidrila al comenzar la pr6xima
estaci6n seca cuando la maleza dis-
minuya su crecimiento.
Una de las caracteristicas del
amur blanco es que ocasionalmente
extiende su larga aleta dorsal sobre
la superficie del agua cuando nada,
haci6ndolo parecer como un .tibu-
r6n. Esta observaci6n fue hecha re-
cientemente por el Dr. Boreham y
sus dos bio-asistentes, Pastor Chaves
e Inocencio Leguia. Calcularon que
el pez media 36 pulgadas de largo,
aproximadamente el tamanio espe-
rado ya que se sabe que el amur
blanco crece mis rapidamente en
aguas tibias.
Los studios continues ha demos-
trado una disminuci6n dramitica de
los criaderos de mosquito en el
lago, siendo el conteo de larvas s6lo
un 10 por ciento de los niveles en-
contrados dentro de la maleza en
afios pasados. La capture de los
mosquitos adults en trampas livia-
nas efectuada alrededor de los es-
tablos del Club de Equitaci6n de
Mindi ha demostrado una reducci6n
concurrente de un 95 por ciento de
los mosquitos an6feles en los 61ti-
mos seis meses. Boreham atribuye
esto al 6xito de la carpa en eliminar
los criaderos a lo largo de la orilla
del lago.
Tambi6n observe que s6lo dos
aplicaciones de un aceite larvicida
liviano fueron necesarias para con-
trolar la cria dcl mosquito y que
6stas sl6o se requirieron durante la
estaci6n seca cuando la maleza cu-
bria unas cuatro hectareas en el
Area de la Tercera Esclusa. Esta
aplicaci6n proporciona un control
temporal y normalmente se reque-
lriia repetirla cada dos semanas
durante 6poca de cria. Esto signifi-
ca un gasto considerable en mano
de obra y materials. En este aspec-
to el amur ya ha proporcionado
ahorros a la Comisi6n.
La Direcci6n de Ingenieria y
Construcci6n, y la Divisi6n de Sa-
neamiento de la Oficina de Salud y
Segur'Lad, dijo Boreham, han podi-
do obtener datos importantes en ]as
observaciones del area controlada
y en sn opinion, ambos aspects del
double experiment tendrAn xito. El

La Mujer en el Mar

Cuando el nuevo destructor madre
USS "Yellowstone" de la Armada
efectu6 la primera travesia por el
Canal la semana pasada, llevaba a
bordo nueve mujeres oficiales. Una
de ellas era Norma G6mez, ex alum-
na de la Universidad de la Zona del
Canal y ganadora de la beca del
Club Universitario del Istmo en
1971, quien es actualmente una te-
niente asignada temporalmente a es-
te buque para desempeihar una tarea
poco comun.

El "Yellowstone", una nave de
reparaci6n construida y comisionada
en la Costa Occidental, viaja con
rumbo a un nuevo puerto base en
Norfolk, Virginia, via Acapulco, Pa-
namA y las Islas Virgenes. El traba-
jo de la Tte. G6mez durante el viaje
es el de dirigir talleres acerca de
las "mujeres en el mar" para los
supervisors varones de los 850 ma-
rineros del buque, con el fin de pre-
pararlos para recibir a las cinco mu-
jeres oficiales y las 100 alistadas
que Formaran part permanentemen-
te de la tripulaci6n en Norfolk. La
Tte. G6mez tambi6n esta estaciona-
da en Norfolk con el Centro de Ad-
ministraci6n de Recursos Humanos.

El papel de las mujeres en la
Armada desde 1860 es parte de la
informaci6n hist6rica que la Tte.
G6mez present a los supervisors.
Luego sigue con los problems ac-
tuales-los temores y expectativas
que los hombres tienen acerca de
las mujeres a bordo, que problems
han surgido desde que la Armada
empez6 a mandar mujeres al mar
hace cuatro o cinco afios y c6mo se
solucionaron esos problems.

Los talleres han tenido 6xito, al
igual que su propia carrera en la
Armada, dice la Tte. G6mez. In-
gres6 en 1974 despu6s de obtener
un titulo como terapista de habla y
audici6n en la Southwest Texas
State University y ha prestado ser-
vicio en Hawai y California. Saldri
de la Armada en Diciembre y acep-
tara un empleo en la industrial pri-
vada, pero tiene planeado permane-
cer en las Reservas de la Armada
de Estados Unidos.

Tres nuevas oficinas de Cuidado.

abrirAn pr6ximamente en el sector
Pacifico del Istmo y una cerrarA. Los
cambios son parte de un esfuerzo
por llevar el cuidado de salud comu-
nal mas cerca de sus clients. La
instalaci6n del Hospital Coco Solo
del Ej6rcito no sera afectada por
estos cambios.
Las nuevas oficinas estarAn situa-
das en la Secci6n B del Hospital
Gorgas del Ejercito, el Edificio 519
en Fuerte Clayton y el Edificio 192
en la Base Howard de la Fuerza

Hoy es el iltimo dia de opera-
ci6n para el Centro de Salud Comu-
nal situado en el Edificio 721 en
Balboa. La oficina de Fuerte Clay-
ton abrira el lunes 15 de septiem-
bre, mientras que las oficinas del
Hospital Gorgas del Ejercito esta-
ran listas el 18 de septiembre. La
Clinica de Bebds y Nifios de How-

el 3 de octubre.
