Tickets for the upcoming mu-
sical, "Guys and Dolls" are now on
sale. The seventeenth United Way
production, "Guys and Dolls" is
directed-by Bruce Quinn and opens
to the public for 19 performances
beginning on Saturday, August 2
and running through Auguist 23,
with Mondays dark. Tickets are $5
each and showtime is 8 p.m.
The box office at the Ancon
Theatre Guild will be manned from
3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
every day except Sundays. For
reservations, patrons may go to the
theatre or call 52-6786. At all other


times there will be an answering
service at the same number. Callers
should leave their names,.telephone
numbers, the dates they wish to see
the show and the number of tickets

Coordinating Committee's official

investiture held in Panama City


The formal investiture of the
representatives of the United States
and the Republic of Panama to the
Coordinating Committee was held
last week at the Office of Panama's
Executive Bureau for Treaty Affairs
of the Ministry of the, Presidency.
The United States representative
to the Coordinating Committee is
Gerard J. Welch, a senior official of
the Commission who is the director
of the Office of Executive Planning.
He was designated by the Com-
nii,'.in's administrator last' No-
\ember to be the United States
representative to the Coordinating
Committee.
Jos6 Barrios Ng, advisor to the
Executive Bureau for Treaty Af-
fairs, is'the representative of the
Republic of Panama to the Co-
ordinating Committee.
The Coordinating Committee is
the binational body created by the
Plnama Canal Treaty of 1977 and
its implementing agreements to


serve as the principal means of
communication and coordination
between the United States and the
Republic of Panama with regard to
the management, operation and
maintenance of the Panama Canal.
The .Coordinating Committee
meets regularly or upon special
request of either representative and
sends periodic reports on its activi-
ties to the governments of the
United States and the Republic of
Panama.

Gasoline stations go digital


The service stations at Curundu
and Howard AFB will soon begin
installation of new digital type
gasoline dispensers, according to
Tom Ige, General Manager of the
Panama Area Exchange.
During the installation two is-
lands, or four lanes, at the Curundu
station and one island at the
Howard station will be closed down
at a time. Every effort will be made
to assure a smooth and fast traffic
flow through the open lanes.
Under the present' arrangement,
only one car can be served in each


lane. Once the new dispensers are
installed, one on each end of the
island, two cars can be serviced per
lane.
Installation of the new dis-
pensers should take no longer than
65 days. It is expected that the new
arrangements will greatly improve
traffic flow through all lanes.
If if becomes necessary, longer
operating hours will be put into
effect on a day to day basis. The
understanding and cooperation of
all customers during this period is
greatly appreciated.

set for Atlantic side

Three management courses are
being presented on the Atlantic side
during the month of August.
Offered by the Employee and
Management Development Staff of
the Office of Personnel Adminis-
tration, the courses will be held in
Building 1105, Cristobal. Informa-
tion on the courses has been
distributed to program managers
throughout the Commission.
The Supervisor and Human
Behavior is a 32-hour course for
new and potential supervisors in
grade levels NM-5 to NM-II or
equivalent. The course is designed
to increase the supervisor's ability
to deal with subordinates as in-
dividuals and as members of a
group. Those taking the course will
be exposed to underlying principles
of human behavior relating to
supervisory effectiveness.
This course will be held from 8
a.m. to 4 p.m. and runs from August
5 through 8. Introduction to
Supervision is the prerequisite. The
suspense date for nominations is
today.
A 40-hour course cnritled In-
tioduction to Supervision wili be
held from 8:30 a.m. to noon August
I1 through 22. The suspense date
for nominations is July 30.
The aim of the course is to help
new supervisors or supervisor can-
didates -make the transition from

Liaison service principal part of duties

for Assistant to the Secretary Murdock


Hazel M. Murdock, Assistant to
the Secretary, Office of the Sec-
retary, Panama Canal Commission,
Washington, D.C., considers her
liaison service to units of the
Commission as the principal part of
her duties. A few days ago she
visited the Isthmus and met with
many of her "constituents" at the
Canal.
Ms. Murdock began her career
with the Panama Canal in 1962 as
an administrative officer in the
Office of the Secretary. Since that
time her work experience in the
Canal's Washington office has
spanned the gamut of Panama
Canal matters. In addition to
managing the office of the Sec-
retary, which includes supervising
other employees and organizing
and supervising the flow of work,
Ms. Murdock functions as a
miniature information office for the
Canal organization, responding to
requests for information about the
Canal area. She also handles
ongoing business such as budgetary
matters and reports on new rules
and regulations promulgated by
other government offices.
In conducting Canal business,
Ms. Murdock has face-to-face
contact with members of Congress
and Congressional staff members
and meets with members of the
Board of Directors, personnel of
other government agencies and acts
as the Commission's liaison with


these offices on matters related to
the Canal operation.
From time to time she represents
the Panama Canal at interagency
meetings. She also is the direct
liaison with the Office of Manage-
ment and Budget on budget and
management matters requiring de-
tailed familiarity with the budget
and overall program of the Panama
Canal.
One of the first of the seven grade
13 women employees holding su-
pervisory or management positions
in the Canal Commission, Ms.
Murdock previously was employed
with the Department of the Navy
both in Washington and in Moroc-
co where she was for four years the
Administrative Officer to the Public
Works officer at the UI.S. Naval Air
Station. A native of Houston.
Texas, she attended the University
of Houston and the American
University in Washington.
Ms. Murdock was one of the
three women of the Canal organiza-
tion nominated by Governor David
S. Parker in 1972 for the Federal
Women's Award for her achieve-
ment in the performance of her
duties and for the high degree of
effectiveness of her contact with
high-level officials in Congress,
government agencies and with
others which served to generate
goodwill for the Canal organiza-
tion. During her Canal career she
has been the recipient of several


outstanding and superior perfor-
mance awards
Ms. Murdock lives in the Glover
Park area of Washington, Reading,
swimming and sailing are among
her favorite pastimes, but after a
full day at the office she enjoys
most of all the antics of her two
cats.

The sound
of music
A course in music appreciation is
being offered by the National
Concert Association in collabora-
tion with the National Institute of
Culture. The course, to be held at
the Museum of Panamanian Man,
begins on August 4 and includes six
classes, from 6 until 7 p.m., and two
concerts. Enrique Alberto Arias,
Doctor of Music at the American
Conservatory of Chicago will teach
the classes. Works of Haydn,
Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Bu-
soni, Griffes, Mendelssohn; Cle-
menti, Chopin, Schumann, Rach-
maninoff, Soler and de Falla will be
used to illustrate the classic, roman-
tic and modern periods of music as
well as piano works and the music
of Spain. The first concert will be
held on August 7 at 8 p.m. at the
museum and will be presented by
the SEM Ensemble which features
contemporary music. Dr. Arias will
present a piano concert at the
National Theatre at 8:45 p.m. on
August 22 to conclude the course.

Seawater system to aid scientists


delve into mysteries of the sea

Legend has it that the name
"Panama" is an aboriginal ex-
pression meaning "abundance of
fish." Whether the origin of the
name is true remains to be verified,
but there is no doubt that nu-

Given Parama's wealth of marine
life, it is no wonder that the
Smithsonian Tropical Research In-
stitute (STRI) has recently made an
addition to its existing marine
laboratory on Naos Island on the
Amador Causeway to provide
facilities to probe further and with
greater ease into the mysteries of
both' bce'ahs ' i thoiti contaminating
one area with organisms from
another.
STRI first considered'the pos-
sibilitity of marine laboratories in
Panama when Dr. Ira Rubinoff,
now director of STRI, came to
Panama in 1959 as a Harvard
student to conduct comparative
studies of fishes from the Atlantic
and Pacific c6a'sts. Dr. Rubinoff
saw the importance ofestablishing a
marine laboratory on the Isthmus,
but unfortunately, the Smithsonian
did not have funds to construct one.
However, in the next few years,
preliminary steps were taken when
existing Army and Navy facilities
were transferred to STRI.
Then, in 1965, two marine
laboratories were established: one
at Galeta Island in the Caribbean
and the othenat the Pacific entrance
to the Canal. A few years later, a
laboratory building was constructed
on Naos Island where a new
seawater system was recently inau-
gurated.
The system, the most advanced of
its kind in the region, will give
marine biologists the opportunity
to study many important theore-
tical and practical problems about
marine life and resources of the
Isthmus.
Scientists from the Smithsonian,
the University of Panama and from


other countries will be able to make
such studies as comparing the rate
of evolution of marine animals in
the two oceans, predicting potential
invading organisms through a sea-
level canal or studying the repro-
ductive biology of commercially
important species.
SBasically, the system pumps
seawater 'from Panrira' Bay aind
distributes it to the new laboratory
in any of three forms. They are: raw
or untreated water as it comes from
-the ocean, containing plankton and
sediments in its most undisturbed
and natural form; filtered seawater
that has been passed through a silica
pressure filter to remove all par-
ticles and plankton over .05 mil-
limeters in diameter, to facilitate
behavioral observation in water of
maximum clarity; and settled sea-
water that is passed through a
specially constructed 114,000 liter
tank to remove heavy sediment
while allowing the natural plankton
to remain. Each aquarium in the
system has access faucets to any of
the three kindsof water,
Any water that spills,on the lab
floor and all the water flushed out of
the aquaria will pass through
special tubing into a tank where it
will be sterilized by ultra-violet rays
before it is drained into the Pacific
Ocean.
One discovery made by STRI
marine biologists, who expect to
learn more about similar topics with
the new lab, is that some fish from
the Atlantic Ocean are not deterred
by the black/brown and yellow
markings on venomous snakes from
the Pacific Ocean and will try to eat
them. Dr. Rubinoff said that with
the present Canal, the snakes are
prevented from crossing to the
Atlantic Ocean. However, this
would not be the case with a sea-
level canal. He said that there is no
way to tell how much damage this
could cause to fish on the Atlantic
side, nor how long it might take for
these Atlantic fish to evolve species
that would no longer try to eat the
black and yellow snakes.


Dr. Nicholas Smythe, also of
STRI,. noted that the abundant
corals in the area have long been a
topic of study and will continue to
be studied at the lab. He added that
the most extensive coral reefs in the
Eastern Pacific Ocean occur in the
Gulf of Chiriqui off the Pacific
coast of Panama. He also said that
along with the coral come serious
coral predators, such as the crown-
of-thorns starfish. However, he
mentioned that a recent study by
Dr. Peter Glynn, director of marine
studies at STRI, reveals that living
within the Pacific corals are a
number of crabs and shrimp that
defend their homes, the coral,
against the crown-of-thorns star-
fish. A sea-level canal, would permit
the starfish to migrate to the
Atlantic side where these coral
predators do not occur and where
the corals have not evolved such
defenses. "This is just one example
of any number of ecological dis-
turbances that could occur with a
sea-level canal," said Smythe. One
study'which may be undertaken at
the new STRI laboratory would be
to discover if the coral predators in
the Pacific Ocean have a natural
enemy in the Atlantic Ocean.
Although Dr. Smythe stressed
the fact that STRI scientists work
primarily in the field of pure
science, conducting studies for the
sake of knowledge itself, he also
said that many of the species that
STRI scientists work with have
potential economic importance.
Although the studies themselves do
not have economic implications, he
said, "there is no doubt that much
useful information applicable to
rational management of these spe-
cies will result."
The new seawater system was
built at a cost of almost half a
million dollars and although tan-
gible results of the system are yet to
be seen, STRI personnel feel that
the laboratory and the possibilities
it offers for research into the secrets
of the sea are well worth the cost.

a Powered Support Systems Me-
chanic (MG-5378-10) to work for
the Roads and Grounds Division of
the Directorate of Facilities En-
gineering at Fort Davis.

Applicants must have had at least
four years of progressively respon-
sible experience in the maintenance,
repair and overhaul of powered
ground and similar support equip-
ment, field combat support; en-
gineering and construction project
support; and general utilities, in-
cluding standby and emergency


power generating systems. Experi-
ence as an automotive mechanic,
heavy duty equipment mechanic, or
gasoline engine or small engine
mechanic will be qualifying pro-
viding that at least one year of the
qualifying experience included the
overhaul and repair of equipment
such as diesel and gasoline engines,
generators, alternators, gears, com-
pressors, and hydraulic, pneumatic
and electrical components and
auxiliary equipment such as water
and fuel lines.

Art

This year the College has added
classes in Oil Painting to its fall
schedule. Classes will be for be-
ginners as well as those who wish to
continue at more advanced levels.
The class has been scheduled on
Monday and Wednesdays from
4:40 to 7:30 p.m. and will be taught
by Al Sprague, Balboa High School
art teacher and well-known Isth-
mian artist. Each level of the class
will earn three-semester credits. The
prerequisite for the first level of Oil
Painting is previous instruction in
both basic drawing and design. A
minimum of 12 students will be
needed to offer the"'class and
enrollment will be closed when 18
students have enrolled. Those in-
terested in the class are urged to
enroll early.
Other art classes to be offered at
the College in the fall are Art
History, which will be taught by
Mrs. Georgia Corin, and Basic
Drawing classes by Henry Barker,
art teacher in Curundu Junior High
School. Mrs. Corin's classes will be
on Tuesday and Thursdays from
10:40 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. and
Barker's classes on the same days
from 4:40 to 7:30 p.m.
Tuition for part-time students is
the same as last year; $27 per
semester credit for those entitled to

physical exams
Physical examinations are now
being conducted-for Curundu Junior
High School and Balboa High
School students who intend to
participate in any interscholastic
competition, or varsity sport, during
the coming school year. Students
who intend to go out for football,
basketball, baseball, swimming,
soccer, track, volleyball or tennis
must have a physical examination.
The examination will take several
days. Forms and information may
be obtained at the Balboa Com-
munity Health Center located in

The sons of three Panama Canal
Commission employees have been
selected to play on the Panama
National Pony League baseball
team. They are Bobby O'Connor,
Paul Myers, and Doran George,
sons of Robert O'Connor, DeWitt
(Bud) Myers. and Daniel George.
The boys left on Tuesday, July 22
for Maracaibo, Venezuela where
they will participate in the .atin
American Pony League Champion-
ship Tournament. All of their

cursos, que son ofrecidos por el
Personal para el Desarrollo de
Empleado y Administraci6n de la
Oficina de Administraci6n de Per-
sonal, serin dictados en cl Edificio
1105 en Crist6bal. Informaci6n
sobre los cursos ha sido distribuida
a los gerentes de program en toda
la Comisi6n.
El Supervisor y el Comporta-
miento Humano es un curso de 32
horas para los nuevos y futures
supervisors en grades NM-5 a
NM-II o equivalentes. El curso
tiene por objeto mejorar la habili-
dad del supervisor para tratar con
los subordinados como individuos y
como miembros de un grupo.
Aquellos que tomen el curso estarin
expuestos a principios implicitos
del comportamiento human rela-
cionados con la eficacia de super-
visi6n.
Este curso se dictara de 8 a.m. a 4
p.m., del 5 al 8 de agosto. La
Introducci6n a la Supervisi6n es un
prerequisite. Hoy es el i6timo dia
para enviar las nominaciones.
Un curso de 40 semanas intitula-
do Introducci6n a la Supervisi6n
sera dictada del I I al 22 de agosto de
8:30 a.m. al mediodia. El 30 dejulio

a los nuevos supervisors o candida-
tos a supervisor a efectuar la

Sistema de agua salada ayudara a a .._


explorer misterios de los oceanos

De acuerdo con la leyenda, el
nombre"Panama" es una expresi6n
aborigen que significa "abundancia
de peces" Si el origen del nombrees
^at h ~ a are que ensa-porI
verificarse, pero no hay duda de que
existe una abundancia de peces en
las aguas de Panama.
Dado a la riqueza de la vida
marina de Panama, no es ninguna
sorpresa que el Instituto Smith-
sonian de Investigaci6n Tropical
(STRI) haya hecho recientemente
una adici6n a su laboratorio marine
en la Isla Naos en la Calzada de
.Amdorcp9 eifdpdg prqporcionar
instalaciones para efectuar inves-
tigaciones avanzadas y con mayor
facilidad, de los misterios de ambos
oc6anos sin contaminar un area con
organismos de la otra.
El STRI primero pens6 en la
posiblidad de instalar laboratories
marines en Panama cuando el Dr.
Ira Rubinoff, actual Director del
STRI, vino por primera vez a
Panama en 1959 como estudiante
de la Universidad de Harvard para
llevar a cabo studios comparativos
de los peces de las costas del
Atlintico y del Pacifico. El Dr.
Rubinoff vio la importancia de
establecer un laboratorio marino en
el Istmo, pero desafortunadamente,
el Smithsonian no contaba con los
fondos suficientes para construir
.uno. Sin embargo, en los afios
siguientes, se tomaron medidas
preliminares cuando instalaciones
del ljercito y de la Armada fueron
transferidas al STRI.
Entonces, en 1965, se establecie-
ron dos laboratories marines; uno
en la Isla Galeta en el Caribe y el
otro en la entrada en el Pacifico del
Canal. Unos afios mas tarde, se
construy6 un edificio para el
laboratorio en la Isla Naos, donde
recientenente se inaugur6 un nuevo
sistema de agua de mar.
El sistema, el mis avanzado de su
clase en la region, brindara a los
bi6logos marines la oportunidad de
estudiar numerosos problems te6-
ricos y practices sobre la vida y
recursos marines del Istmo.
Los cientificos del Smithsonian,
de la Universidad de Panama y de
otros paises podran realizar estu-


dios tales como el comparar el
indice de evoluci6n de los animals
marines en ambos oceanos, el
predecir los organismos invasores
potenciales a traves de un canal a
nivel del mar o el estudiar la
biolog.a -reproductiya de species
comercialmente importantes.
Fundamentalmente, el sistema
bombea el agua de mar desde la
Bahia de Panama y la distribuye al
nuevo laboratorio en cualquiera de
tres formas. Estas son: agua cruda o
no tratada segtn sale del oc6ano,
conteniendo plancton y sedimentos
en su forma natural e imperturbada;
agua de mat filtrada que ha pasado
a trav6s de ur filtro de presi6n silica
para eliminar todas las particular y
plancton sobre .05 milimetros en
diametro con el fin de facilitar la
observaci6n del comportamiento en
agua de maxima claridad; y el agua
de mar fija que pasa a trav6s de un
tanque de 114,000 litros especial-
mente construido para eliminai el
sedimento pesado mientras permit
que permanezca el plancton natu-
ral. Cada acuario en el sistema tiene
grifos de acceso a cualquiera de las
tres classes de agua.
Cualquier agua que se derrame en
el piso del laboratorio y toda la que
es eliminada de los acuarios, pasard
a traves de un tubo especial hasta un
tanque donde sera esterilizado por
rayos ultra-violeta antes de ser
vaciado al Oc6ano Pacifico.
Un descubrimiento hecho por los
bi6logos de marina del STRI,
quienesesperanaprender ms sobre
temas similares con el nuevo
laboratorio, es que algunos peces
del Oc6ano Atlintico no les disua-
den las marcas negrasi/chocolates y
amarillas de culebras venenosas del
Oc6ano Pacifico y tratan de comer-
selas. El Dr. Rubinoffdijo que con
el actual Canal, se impide que las
culebras crucen al Oceano Atlan-
tic,. Sin embargo, este no seria el
caso con un canal a nivel del mar.
Dijo que no habia forma de predecir
cuanto dafio esto causaria a la pesca
en el sector Atl6ntico. ni cuanto
tiempo le tomaria a estos peces del
Atlantico evolucionar hacia espe-
cies que no tratarin de comerse las
culebras negras y amarillas.
El Dr. Nicholas Smythe, tambien
del STRI. observ6 que la abundan-


cia de corales en el area desde hace
much tempo ha sido un tema de
studio y continuara estudiandose
en el laboratorio. Afiadi6 que los
arrecifes de coral mas extensos en el
Este del Oc6ano Pacifico existen en
el Golfo de Chiriqui a poca
distancia de'la costa Pacifica de
Panama. Tambi6n dijo que junto
con el coral viven animals preda-
torios, tales como la estrella de mar
corona de espinas. Sin embargo,
menciono que un reciente studio
hecho por el Dr. Peter Glynn,
director de studios marines en
STRI, revela que dentro de los
corales del Pacifico viven numero-
sos cangrejos y camarones que
defienden su hogar, el coral, contra
la estrella de mar corona de espinas.
Un canal a nivel del mar permitiria
la migraci6n de la estrella de mar al
sector Atlantico donde no existen
estos animals predatorios del coral
y donde los corales no han
desarrollado tales defenses. "Esto
es s6lo un ejemplo de cualquier
nimero de perturbaciones ecol6-
gicas que pudieran ocurrir con un
canal a nivel del mar", dijo. Un
studio que pudieraemprenderseen
el nuevo laboratorio del STRI seria
el descubrir si los animals preda-
torios del coral en el Oc6ano Pacifi-
co tienen un enemigo natural en
el Oc6ano Atlintico.
Aunque el Dr. Smythe enfatiz6
en el hecho de que los cientificos del
STRI laboran primordialmente en
el campo de ciencia pura, llevando a
cabo studios por amor al propio
conocimiento, tambi6n dijo que
muchas de las species con las
cuales trabajan los cientificos del
STRI tienen una importancia eco-
n6mica potential. Aunque los mis-
mos studios no tienen implicacio-
nes econ6micas, dijo, "no hay duda
que proporcionaran informaci6n
sumamente itil, que podra aplicar-
se a la administraci6n racional de
estas speciess.
El nuevo sistema de agua de mar
fue construido a un costo de casi
medio mill6n de d6lares y aunquc
los resultados tangibles del sistema
ain estin por verse, el personal del
STRI estima queel laboratorioy las
posibilidades que ofrece para la
investigaci6n de los secrets del mar
bien valen esa inversion.
