Military Postal Service: some of your questions answered


As October I approaches, the
necessity of Canal organization
employees having answers to their
questions concerning the use of the
Military Postal Service (Air Post
Office) has become increasingly
apparent. The Military Postal Serv-
ice has released the following in-
formation to all boxholders through
the Director of Posts of the Canal
Zone Postal Service in an attempt
to clear up at least some of the
questions and to present heretofore
unpublished information.
Eligible Canal employees and
other Canal Zone boxJiolders have
by now received through the mail a
form indicating their new box
number, APO address and box


location, together with a packet of
change of address cards. To receive
the combination to the box and
thereby make the assignment final,
an employee must present himself at
the designated post office with a
valid identification card in hand
(either a Panama Canal Commis-
sion or Department of Defense
identification card). Note: Postal
authorities will accept a Panama
Canal Company/Canal Zone Gov-
ernment identification card in lieu
of a Panama Canal Commission
identification card as proof of
eligibility initially, but will require
verification of eligibility as soon as
the Commission identification cards
have been issued.


Air Post Office locations


U.S. citizens who will be working
for the Panama Canal Commission
and others eligible to receive mail
through the Military Postal Service
beginning October I have by this
time received their new box num-
bers. For the benefit of those who
are not familiar with military areas,
here are directions to the new post
office locations:
Residents who have been assigned
postal boxes at Building 446,
Albrook AFS, may get there by
entering the main gate from Gaillard
Highway, proceeding straight ahead
on Andrews Boulevard to a "T"
intersection, where they will see a
big "Road Knights" sign on the
building to the right. Bear right at
Canfield Avenue to the designated
parking area.


Persons receiving their mail at
Building 711, Howard AFB, enter
Andrews Boulevard through the
main gate and proceed straight
ahead, passing the movie theater on
the left and continuing to the inter-
section of Rencher Avenue and
Andrews Boulevard. Building 711
is on the right.

Postal patrons who will receive
their mail at Building 84, Quarry
Heights, enter Andrews Road from
the Quarry Heights entrance, pro-
ceed straight ahead and make a
right turn at Devers Street, bearing
to the right after passing Montague
Hall. Building 84 is directly in front,
in the same building as the movie
theater.

An eligible individual who has
not received a box assignment
should present a valid identification
card at the post office servicing his
townsite and-fill out AF Form 1862,
Lockbox Record. Lockboxes are
issued free of charge and assign-
ment is limited to one box per
family.

Employees may secure the com-
bination to their boxes during the
second week of September in all
post- office locations except Build-
ing 446, Albrook AFS and Building
32, Fort Davis. Work on the postal


facilities at these two locations has
not yet been completed, but is
expected to be finished by Sep-
tember 25. Issuing of box combina-
tions at Albrook and Fort Davis
will take place after that date. Mail
that is received at either of these two
locations before September 25 will
be re-directed to the employee's
current address.
October 1 is the effective date for
employees to begin using their
APO/FPO addresses; however, change
of address cards indicating the effec-
tive date of change should be mailed
immediately.


Those who are authorized to use
APO facilities are: all U.S. military
and their dependents, retired U.S.
military, U.S. citizen civilian em-
ployees of the military, U.S. em-
ployees of the Panama Canal Com-
mission, and U.S. citizens designated
as DOD or Commission contractors,
as specified in the Treaty. Any
others, including organizations, must
be approved through the Joint
Committee on postal matters.

for APO privileges and who were

October 1 paychecks to be advanced


The Financial Vice President has
authorized advancing the Monday,
October 1 payday to Friday, Sep-
tember 28. This will include pay-
checks for Panama. Canal Com-
pany/Canal Zone Government em-
ployees, Alien Cash Relief re-
cipients and those on the Per-
manent Injury Roll.
This action is being taken to
move forward, to the extent pos-
sible, the increased workload that
will fall on the Payroll Branch on
and after October 1, 1979.
The Office of the Financial Vice
President regrets that it has become
necessary to suspend the practice of
issuing advance partial payments of
commuted leave to employees ter-
minating and leaving the Isthmus


prior to the payday in which their
commuted leave will be paid.
Under normal circumstances, the
Payroll Branch receives a very small
number of requests for advances.
However, with the tremendous in-
crease in the number of termina-
tions scheduled for September, the
Payroll Branch cannot absorb the
additional work involved in issuing
advance payments in view of an
already extremely heavy workload.
All terminating employees leav-
ing the Isthmus prior to the pay-
ment of their commuted leave
should provide forwarding ad-
dresses on their termination papers
or to the Treasurer's Office.
Every effort will be made to
process commuted leave payments
as quickly as possible.

Community planning farewell for Parfitts


In a voluntary gesture of ap-
preciation by the Isthmian com-
munity, more than 60 organizations
in the Canal area are co-spon-
soring a special farewell in honor of
Gov. and Mrs. H. R. Parfitt. It will
be held in the Curundu helicopter
hangar, Building 1015, on Sep-
tember 22.
Food and beverages will be on
sale from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the
79th Army Band will perform from
6 to 7 p.m. A formal program will
follow, ending at 8 p.m. when a
reception line will form for those
who wish to say goodbye to the
Parfitts personally.
From 8 p.m. to midnight food
and beverages will again be on sale


and music for dancing will be pro-
vided by the 79th Army Band.
Train transportation will be
provided for Atlantic-siders and
will make stops at Mount Hope,
Gatun and Gamboa to arrive at
Balboa at 5:30 p.m. Passengers will
be transferred to buses which will
take them to the hangar and back to
the train at the end of the evening.
Mini-buses will be utilized within
the outlying parking areas to assist
people to and from their cars.
Tickets to the farewell are now
available for $1 donation (children
under 12, free) from any of the co-
sponsors, as well at the Balboa and
Cristobal YMCAs and the Trans-
portation and Terminals Bureau

When the Ferrocarril de Panama,
Panama Canal Authority, assumes
control of the Panama Railroad on
October 1, the new agency will not
honor tickets or express checks
purchased from the Panama Rail-
road. Only tickets and express
checks issued by the Ferrocarril de
Panama will be valid on and after
that date.
The Panama Railroad will issue
refunds through the close of busi-
ness on Friday, September 28, to
those individuals or organizations
who hold tickets or express checks
in excess of what they will be able to
use between now and October I.


Refunds in amounts up to $50
will be handled through the Rail-
road Division's station agents at the
Colon and Ancon Railroad stations
during normal operating hours.
- Refunds on bulk lots of tickets in
excess of $50 in value will be
handled through the Office of the
Manager. Railroad Division, Build-
ing 15 (Balboa Roundhouse), dur-
ing normal office hours. The
telephone number is 52-7433.
Commuter tickets will not be sold
after September 4. Refunds on the
unused portions of commuter tickets
will be based on the number of trips
still remaining.

Summit Golf Club will host a
farewell "Mexican Best Ball" tour-
nament for Governor H. R. Parfitt
at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Septem-
ber 15.
/Teams of four will be made up by
blind drawing after all interested
golfers have signed up. The entry
fee is $8.00 and may be paid at any
of the following golf course pro-
shops; Summit, Amador or Brazos
Brooks.
A special Steamship Roast lunch
will be served in the Summit Golf
Course dining room after play to all
contestants. Prizes will be awarded
after lunch.

Art lessons for children ages 8
through 12 will be taught in a course
called "Lollipops" (for fun) by
Mrs. Marsha Crecelius on Friday
afternoons beginning August 31
from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
The course will run on a
monthly basis (for example one
month painting, the next sculpture,
etc.) with each month bringing a
new subject or project area into
focus for the child, thereby ex-
posing him/her to more areas of
study.

The Inter-American Women's
Club will hold its annual Christmas
Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
Saturday and Sunday, September 22
Sand 23, in the Curundu Junior High
School Cafetorium. Admission is
25 cents for everyone over 12 years
of age and ticket holders will have
a chance to win a door prize every
half hour.
A raffle will be held on.Sunday.

items donated as raffle prizes, -a
mola skirt modelled by bazaar di-
rector Doreen Hill and a carved
wooden screen. Raffle tickets are

The Balboa Elks Lodge No. 1414
will hold a fish fry on Saturday,
September 15. Happy hour begins
at 6 p.m. and food will be served
from 7 p.m. Dance music will be
provided.

A farewell dinner-dance in honor
of Governor and Mrs. H. R. Par-
fitt will be held at 7 p.m. on Sep-
tember 21 at the Amador Officers'
Club. The event is sponsored by
the Canal Zone Central Labor
Union and Metal Trades Council,
the National Maritime Union AFGE
14, the Panama Canal Pilots
Association and the Masters, Mates
and Pilots Tugboat Division.
There will be dancing to the
music of Lucho and for the young
at heart, disco. Tickets are $7.50
per person and available to all
union members in the Canal Zone
and Panama through their labor
unions. Dress is guayabera.

The National League of Amer-
ican Pen Women, Inc., will open an
art exhibit on Saturday. Seltem-
ber 15, in the Pen Women's Gallery
in the Administration Building
cafeteria.

The Canal Zone Junior Football
League begins its season tonight
with a doubleheader game at Kobbe
Field when the Kiwanis Kolts play
the Howard Eagles. The Light
Weight game will begin at 5 p.m.
-followed by the Heavy .Weight
game at 7 p.m.



The National Association of
Retired Federal Employees wel-
comes new members into its local
chapter. Membership is open to any
employee currently eligible for
retirement, whether retired or not.
The association has an in-hospital
insurance plan of interest to all
members. For more information,
contact retirement counselor Mike
Harrington at 52-3229.



The September 6 meeting o0 the
Diablo Camera Club will feature a
slide show on how to take nature
photography given by John V.
Brown. The Club meets at 7:30 p.m.
the first and third Thursday of the
month in the Panama Canal Train-
ing Center. The public is welcome
to attend.

It's a noisy plant. On a breezy
night, woody bamboo canes trem-
bling against each other make
spooky sounds. A strong wind
blowing through a stand produces
groans and loud harsh crunching
sounds, like a tree about to crack
and split. The feathery bamboo
whistles in the wind.
Botanically, bamboo is a long-
lived woody evergreen grass. There
are more than a thousand known
varieties ranging from a tiny dwarf a
few inches high to long and slender
specimens to thick giants more than
100 feet high. Common bamboos,
however, number less than 15.
Five of these varieties are found
here on the Isthmus at Summit
Gardens. Bamboos can also be
found growing in the jungle and in
townsites and beautiful stands can
be seen as one drives up into the
country. A number of bamboos
embellish the Canal Zone land-
scape. A stand can be seen from the
Balboa Heights Administration Build-
ing, and a golden bamboo in the
Fish Bowl area of Ancon is a
splendid sight to behold, especially
when it is touched by the sun.
Bamboo is the most universally
useful and unique plant known to
man. The speed of its growth is a
miracle of nature: it grows faster
than any plant in existence. One
recorded instance has a variety of
bamboo growing four feet in one
day. It reaches its full development
in about two months; after this, it
grows no taller nor thicker for the
rest of its life.
Bamboo is remarkably fertile.
New shoots appear each year and
spread until checked by man. When
the new shoot comes up through
the soil, it has the diameter the plant
will have the rest of its life. All of
the joints the new stalk or culmm"
will have also will be visible in the
shoot. While the stalk is growing,
the root stops; when the stalk has
stopped growing, the root starts'
again.
Since bamboo matures in less
than a year, it can be harvested
every year. Age brings no benefit
to the plant, so there is no ad-
vantage to leaving it uncut for long
periods. Most useful culms are three
to five years old.

Bamboo is flexible, yet tough,
light but strong. It can be split
easily in one direction, never in the
other. It may be pliant or rigid, as
need demands. After heating, it can
be bent into a new shape.
For ornamental purposes in
Japan, thick bamboo is often grown
square by placing a cedar wood
frame about 'i/-inch thick around
the new shoot, forcing it to grow
within the confines of the frame that
is moved up the stalk as the bamboo
grows taller. Rectangular bamboo
is also possible by the same method.
Bamboo flowers once, at inter-
vals of 60 to 120 years, and then
dies. The flowering of one type of
bamboo occurs almost simulta-
neously everywhere, even in those
cuttings transplanted in other parts
of the world. A recent article in
"The New York Times" reported
that one of the most beautiful
species of bamboo, called "um-
brella" had begun to flower for the
first time in 100 years in northern
Europe and was about to blossom
in the United States. After that,
according to the article, all the
world's umbrella bamboo will die.
The origin of bamboo is a mys-
tery of the Orient, where for cen-
turies it has been part of the daily
existence of half of the human race,
providing the basic raw materials
for housing, farming implements,
boatbuilding, weapons, medicine,
food and clothing, papermaking,
musical instruments, art objects and
a myriad of household and com-
mercial articles. Included among
the latter are fans, baskets, um-
brellas, rakes, bows, hats, spoons,
chopsticks, fishing poles, net-mend-
ing needles and numerous other arts
and crafts materials. So-called
bamboo furniture very often is not
bamboo at all, but rattan that
resembles bamboo in appearance.
Marco Polo may have described
one of its earliest uses when he
recorded in his journal on travelsin
Cathay that the Chinese since
200 B.C. had been using oil taken
from deep wells, using drills encased
in bamboo tubes and hollow
bamboo to carry the oil.
The utilization and economic
importance of bamboo in the East is
well known. Less familiar are the

facts of its importance in the
economies of countries neighboring
Panama. The most abundant and
most utilized is the giant bamboo,
with culms from 60 to 100 feet tall
and four to eight inches in diameter.
A very fast growing bamboo, a new
shoot may grow from 10 to 12
inches in one day. Because it is
durable it is used not only for rural
housing, but also is the principal
building material in the construc-'
tion of large structures in parts of
Colombia and in'Ecuador, where it
is called "cafia brava." Scaffolding
that supports the construction
operation, painting and repair of
high buildings is made with the
culms of giant bamboo. In the rural
areas of these two countries it is
used for electric power poles, fence
posts, corrals, bridges and water
pipes. Large, flattened culms take
the place of concrete for'flooring in
houses and the drying floors for
coffee and cacao. Giant bamboo is
highly resistant to wood-eating
insects.
Feathery bamboo, one of the first
to be introduced into this hemi-
sphere, is one of the most common
cultivated locally. It is remarkable
for the strength of its culms and its
adaptability to many uses, among
these, house construction, fences,
shades and pots for nursery plants.
Another variety of bamboo here
is the hemp bamboo, that grows tall
and erect and frequently is cul-

tivated in the warmer parts of the
United States.
Golden bamboo, giant bamboo,
and dwarf bamboo, whose massive
foliage make it ideal for landscap-
ing, complete the five common
bamboos found on the Isthmus.
This extraordinary plant has
played a more important role on
the -Isthmus than most of us
realize. For many years bamboo
and bamboo products were listed
among the principal commodities
that transited the Canal. Panama
bamboos have figured prominently
in at least two important historical
events.
After an infinite number of ex-
periments, Thomas A. Edison found
that a carbonized filament of
bamboo, a slender wire-like element
made of an internode of bamboo,
was perfect for his first electric
lamp. It is believed that the source
of Edison's experimental material
were fibers from a bamboo known
as "Chusquea pittieri Hackel" grow-
ing wild in the jungles at an eleva-
tion of 5,000 feet on the slopes of
the Volcan in Chiriqui. At about
the same time, gramophone needles
were being made of selected pieces
of bamboo.
When Admiral Richard E. Byrd
sailed from Balboa in 1940 aboard
his supply ship U.S.S. North Star
on his way to Little America, as
his camp in Antarctica was to be
named, he took along several
thousand Panama bamboos which
were to be used to make snow trails
in the Antarctic regions.
More recently, a silica substance
found in the culms of many
bamboos has been used in medicine
and as a catalyst for certain
chemical reactions. Cellulose from
certain bamboos is used in the
rayon industry and liquid diesel has
been produced froi bamboo by
distillation. Bamboo shoots, an
important vegetable on the Oriental
table, are also popular the world
over.
In addition to commercial pro-
ducts, bamboo that grows well on
river banks and steep hillsides is
useful for soil erosion control, for
bird refuges, and as forage for
livestock.
The world's yearly growth of
bamboo is more than 10 million
tons, most of it grown in the East.
The greatest part goes for paper-
making, with manufactured objects
and bamboo shoots, in that order,
making up the rest of the produc-
tion.

Embassy to handle visa applications


The immigrant and non-immi-
grant visa functions of the Admin-
istrative Services Division, Canal
Zone Government, are being phased
out.
Beginning September I, appli-
cants for immigrant (resident) visas
will be referred directly to the Con-
sular Section of the American
Embassy.
The Administrative Services Di-
vision will continue to accept non-


immigrant (tourist, student) visa
applications and issue visas through
September 21. After that date, ap-
plicants for these, too, will 'be
referred to the Consular Section of
the American Embassy for pro-
cessing.
The Consular Section of the
American Embassy is located in the
Diego Building on Balboa Avenue

Law and transition topic of FWP meeting


The Federal Women's Program is
sponsoring two transition-related
activities.
The first is a course to be offered
from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on
Thursday, September 6, entitled
"Traffic Licenses-Legal Aspects
During Transition." The course will
be conducted by personnel of the
Panama National Guard and will
cover Panamanian traffic laws and
licensing requirements after Oc-
tober 1.
The second will be a workshop
held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on


.Thursday, September 20, entitled,
"Career Counseling During Transi-
tion Times." The workshop will be
conducted by personnel from the
Panama Canal Company/Canal
Zone Government, Canal Zone
College and the Canal Zone
branches of Florida State and
Oklahoma State universities. The

shop is September 6.

to the public and will be held in the

Canal sobre el uso del Servicio Pos-
tal Militar (Oficina de Correo
Afreo-APO). EL Servicio Postal
Military ha diseminado la siguiente
informaci6n a todos los arrendado-
res de apartados de correo, por
medio del Director de Correos del
Servicio Postal de la Zona del
Canal, con la intenci6n de aclarar
algunas preguntas y para presentar
informaci6n que no habia sido
publicada anteriormente.
Los empleados elegibles y otros
arrendadores de apartados de co-
rreos de la Zona del Canal, han reci-
bido por correo un formulario que

Adelantan dia de pago de Oct. 1


El Vicepresidente de Finanzas ha
autorizado el adelanto del dia de
pago del lunes, 10 de octubre al vier-
nes, 28 de septiembre. Este dia se
pagaran los cheques salariales de la
Compafia del Canal de Panama y el
Gobierno de la Zona del Canal, los
de aquellos jubilados que reciben
ayuda econ6mica y los de aquellos
que reciben cheques por Incapaci-
dad Permanente.
Esta media tiene por fin adelan-
tar, lo mas possible la carga de tra-
bajo que recaera sobre el Ramo de
N6minas desde el 1� de octubre de
1979.
La Oficina del Vicepresidente de
Finanzas siente much que se haya
vuelto imperative suspender la cos-
tumbre de adelantar los pagos par-
ciales de vacaciones acumuladas de
los empleados que se separan de la
compaffia y viajan antes del dia de


pago en que se les pagarian sus
vacaciones.
En circunstancias normales, el
Ramo de N6minas recibe muy
pocas solicitudes de pagos adelanta-
dos. Pero, por motives del tre-
mendo incremento de separaciones
programadas para el mes de sep-
tiembre, el Ramo de N6minas no
puede absorber el trabajo adicional
que conlleva el adelantar los pagos
en vista del trabajo ya sobre-
cargado.
Todos los empleados que piensen
abandonar el Istmo antes de que sus
vacaciones les hayan sido pagadas,
deberan adjuntar a sus documents
de separaci6n o deberan dejar en la

Cuando el Ferrocarril de Panama
de la Autoridad del Canal de Pa-
nama asuma el control del Panama
Railroad el 1� de octubre, la nueva
empresa no aceptara los boletos de
pasajeros o los cheques de expreso
adquiridos del Panama Railroad.
S61o los boletos de pasajeros y los
cheques de expreso emitidos por el
Ferrocarril de Panama seran vali-
dos a partir de esa fecha.

El Panama Railroadreembolsara
dichos boletos hasta el viernes 28 de
septiembre a aquellas personas u or-
ganizaciones que tengan en su po-
der boletos o cheques de express
que no podran usar antes del 10 de
octubre.

Es una plant ruidosa. En una
noche de much brisa, las cafias de
bamb6, se mecen y chocan entire si,
produciendo unos sonidos que dan
miedo. Una fuerte brisa que sopla a
trav6s de un area donde crece el
bamb6 produce gemidos y fuertes,
Asperos y chocantes sonidos, como
un Arbol que esta a punto de partirse
por la mitad. El bamb6 plumoso
silba en la brisa.
BotAnicamente, el bambi es una
hierba perenne. Comprende mas de
mil variedades conocidas, desde el
enanito de unas pulgadas de altura
hasta las largas y delgadas species,
y gigantes macizos de mas de 100
pies de altura. No obstante, las
variedades de bamb6 comun suman
menos de 15.
Cinco de estas variedades se
encuentran aqui en el Istmo de
Panama, en los Jardines Summit.
El bambd tambi6n puede verse en la
jungla y en los poblados cuando se
viaja por el campo. El bamb6 embe-
Ilece el paisaje de la Zona del Canal.
Un area donde crece bamb6 puede
verse desde el Edificio de Adminis-
traci6n en Balboa Heights, y el
bambf dorado en el area del "Fish
Bowl" de. Anc6n es una hermosa
vista, especialmente cuando es
bafiado por los rayos del sol.
El bamb6 es la plant mas singu
lar y mas litil que conoce el hombre.
La rapidez de su crecimiento es un
milagro de la naturaleza; crece mas
ripidamente que cualquier plant
en existencia. En una ocasi6n se
registr6 el caso de una variedad de
bamb6 que crecia cuatro pies en un
dia. Alcanza su crecimiento pleno
en aproximadamente dos meses;
despu6s de lo cual, no crece ni mis
alto ni mas grueso durante el resto
de su existencia.
El bambu es una plant notable-
mente f6rtil, los retofios aparecen
cada afio y se extienden hasta que
los detiene el hombre. Cuando el
retofio sale de la tierra, tiene el dia-
metro que la plant tendra por el
resto de su existencia. Todos los
nudos que la nueva cafia tendra
tambi6n son visible en el retofio.
Mientras la cafia crece, la raiz
detiene su crecimiento; cuando la
cafia ha dejado de crecer, la raiz
empieza a crecer de nuevo.
Puesto que el banib6 madura en
menos de un afio, puede ser recolec-
tado cada afio. El dejarlo envejecer
no es de ning6n beneficio a la
plant, asi es que no tiene ninguna
ventaja dejarlo sin cortar por largos
periods de tiempo. Las cafias mas

Tiles son las que tienen tres a cinco
anos.
Aunque el bamb6 es resistente,
liviano y firme, es flexible. Puede
partirse facilmente en una direc-
ci6n, nunca en la otra. Puede ser
Ooblegable o rigido, segin exige la
necesidad. Despu6s de calentarlo
puede darsele nueva forma.
Para fines de adorno, en el Jap6n
el bambi grueso con frecuencia
crece cuadrado al colocarle un
marco de madera de aproximada-
mente media pulgada de espesor
alrededor del retofio, forzandolo a
crecer dentro de los confines del
marco que es elevado en la cafia a
media que va creciendo. Tambi6n
es possible producer bamb6 rectan-
gular empleando el mismo m6todo.
El barhbi florece una vez, a inter-
valos de 60 a 120 afios, y entonces
muere. El florecimiento de una clase
de bamb6 ocurre casi simultanea-
mente en todas parties, hasta en
rampollos transplantados a otras
parties del mundo. En un reciente
articulo de "The New York Times"
se inform que una de las mAs her-
mosas species de bamb6, llamada
paraguas empez6 a florecer por pri-
mera vez en 100 afios en el norte de
Europa y estaba pr6ximo a florecer
en los Estados Unidos. Despu6s de
eso, segin el articulo, todos los
bamb6 de paraguas del mundo se
morirAn.
El origen del bamb6 es un miste-
rio del Oriente, donde durante
siglos ha sido parte integral de la
existencia de la mitad de la raza
humana, proporcionando la mate-
ria prima para casas, para imple-
mentos agricolas, para la cons-
trucci6n de barcos o armas, en la
medicine, para alimentos y ropa,
para la fabricaci6n de papel, instru-
mentos musicales, objetos de arte y
millares de articulos dom6sticos y
comerciales. Entre estos figuran
abanicos, canastas, paraguas, ras-
trillos, arcos, sombreros, cucharas,
palillos chinos para comer, cafias de
pescar, agujas para remendar redes
y otros materials de artesania. Los
llamados muebles de bamb6 con
frecuencia no son de bamb6, sino de
ratan que es muy parecido al
bamb6i.
Marco Polo pudo haber descrito
uno de sus primeros usos cuando
escribi6 en su diario sobre sus viajes
a Cathay, que el chino desde el afio
200 A.C. viene usando petr6leo
extraido desde los profundos pozos,
empleando taladros encerrados en
tubos de bamb6 y el bamb6 hueco
para transportar el petr6leo.

conocida. Menos conocida es la
importancia que tiene en la econo-
mia de los paises vecinos de
Panama. El mas abundante y utili-

bamb6i de muy rapido crecimiento,
un retofio puede crecer de 10 a 12
pulgadas en un dia. Debido aquees
durable se usa no s6lo para vivien-
das rurales, pero es el material prin-
cipal de construcci6n en la edifica-
ci6n de grandes estructuras en
parties de Colombia y Ecuador,
donde se llama canfa brava. La
andamiada que apoya la operaci6n
de construcci6n, pintura y repara-
ci6n de edificios altos es hecha de la
cafia del bamb6 gigante. En las
areas rurales de estos dos paises lo
usan para postes de energia el6c-
trica, postes para cercas, corrales,
puentes y tuberias de agua. Las
cafias grandes aplanadas reempla-
zan el cemento de los pisos en las
casas y los pisos para secar el caf6 y
el cacao. El bamb6i gigante es alta-
mente resistente a los insects que
atacan la madera.
El bamb6 plumoso, uno de los
primeros en ser introducido a este
hemisferio, es uno de los mas comu-
nes cultivados localmente. Es nota-
ble por la fuerza de su caiia y su
adaptabilidad a muchos usos, entire
los cuales figuran, la construcci6n
de casas, cercas, pantallas y potes
para plants.

El bamb6 dorado, el bamb6
gigante, y el bamb6 enano, cuyo
follaje tupido es ideal para hermo-
sear el terreno, completan las cinco
classess de bamb6 comunes que se
encuentran en el Istmo.
Esta plant extraordinaria ha
desempefiado un papel muy impor-
tante y poco imaginado en el Istmo
de Panama. Durante muchos afios
el bambu y sus products figuraron
entire los principles cargamentos
que cruzaron el Canal de Panama.
Los bamb6 de Panama han figu-
rado prominentemente en por lo
menos dos events hist6ricos im-
portantes.
Despu6s de una infinidad de
experiments, Thomas A. Edison
descubri6 que un filamento de
bamb6 carbonizado, un element
delgado como un alambre confec-
cionado de un entrenudo de bamb6,
era perfect para su primera lIm-
para el6ctrica. Se cree que la fuente
del material experimental de Edison
eran fibras de un bamb6 conocido
como Chusquea piltieri Hackel que
crece silvestre en las junglas a una
elevaci6n de 5,000 pies en las lade-
ras del Volcan de Chiriqui. Casi al
mismo tiempo las'agujas de los gra-
m6fonos eran hechas de pedazos de
bambi.
Cuando el Almirante Richard E.
Byrd partio de Balboa en 1940 a
bordo de su barco de suministros el
U.S.S. Northern Star con rumbo a
la Pequena America, nombre que
Ilevaria su campamento en la Artar-
tida, llev6 consigo various millares de
bamb6 de PanamA. los cuales serian
usados para construir senderos en la
nieve en las regions Antarticas.
Recientemente, una substancia
silicea que se encuentra en las cafias
de muchos bambfi ha sido usada en
la medicine y como catalizador para
ciertas reacciones quimicas. La
celulosa de ciertos bamb6 es usada
en la industrial del ray6n y diesel
liquid ha sido producido del
bamb6 mediante la destilaci6n. Los
retofios tiernos. que constituyen un
manjar apreciado en la mesa de los
orientales. se han popularizado en
todas parties del mundo.
Ademas de los products comer-
ciales. el bambu que crece en las ori-
llas de los rios y en las laderas
empinadas de los cerros es de gran
valor para controlar la erosion de la
tierra. para albergar los pajaros y
como forraje para el ganado.
El volume annual de bambi
mundialmente es mas de 10 millo-
nes de toneladas, que crece mayor-
mente en el Oriente. .a mayor parte
es destinada a' la fabricaci6n de
papel. El resto de la producci6n se
destina, en su orden, a la fabrica-
ci6n de objetos various y al consume
de retofios comestibles.

Nuevas ubicaciones para oficir


Cuando los tratados entren en
vigor, ciertos edificios pasaran a ser
propiedad de Panama. Por ese
motivo, la Compafila del Canal de
Panama ha reubicado permanent
o temporalmente algunas oficinas.

bre Carreras Durante el Periodo de

la Zona del Canal, Universidad de
la Zona del Canal y Extensiones de
las Universidades Estatales de Flo-

Carretera Gaillard, doblan a la
izquierda en la Avenida Gaillard y
entran al estacionamiento que esta
