"They moved the earth to unite the world


Tribute was paid to Canal con-
struction era West Indian workers
and their descendants in a ceremony
held at Rainbow City on August 15.
Canal Zone Gov. H. R. Parfitt
spoke of the West .Indians' part in
the construction and operation of
the Canal in a program that also
marked the 65th anniversary of the
waterway.
Regional Director of the Na-
tional Maritime Union Edward
Gaskin delivered the main address,
speaking on the history of West
Indians and the Canal, including
the French era. He paid special
tribute to Governor Parfitt, which
brought an ovation from the
audience.
Escorted by Eunice Johnson,
former Rainbow City schoolteacher,
and Reginald Prescott, retired Pan-
ama Railroad employee, the Gov-
ernor placed a wreath at the plaque


dedicated to West Indian Canal
construction era employees. The
plaque was erected in 1952 at the
Rainbow City Occupational High
School and is inscribed, "In ap-
preciation for the construction
period West Indians who moved
the earth to unite the world
(1904-1914)." Wreaths were also
laid by Antonio Yepes, Governor of
Colon; Leopoldo Benedetti, Mayor
of Colon: Major Domingo Ocala-
gan, Chief, 2d Military Zone; Oscar
Savage, Jamaican Consul; labor
unions and civic groups.
The Colon Municipal Band,
under the direction of Winston
Flowers, played the National An-
thems of the Republic of Panama
and the United States of America.
Lorna Williams directed the Rain-
bow City Community Chorale in
singing the anthems of Great
Britain, Trinidad and Tobago, Bar-


bados and Jamaica, as well as
several West Indian folk songs.
Following the ceremonies, Gov-
ernor Parfitt spoke personally with
many of the guests and gave
autographs before boarding a heli-
copter for the return flight to
Balboa.

Tours highlight

of Hispanic

Heritage Week
By Presidential Decree, the an-
nual observance of National His-
panic Heritage Week is scheduled
for September 10 to 14.
The major activity of the week
locally will be a series of guided
tours in Panama to afford residents
the opportunity to learn more about.
this rich heritage which has so
influenced American life.
One of the tours will be a
historical-cultural tour of signifi-
cant buildings and monuments,
such as the Presidential Palace,
Cathedral Plaza and the National
Theatre.
Another will be an industrial
tour, which will include the Na-
tional Brewery, Caf6 Durin and
Glidden Paints.
The third will be a museum tour
of the Museum of Natural History,
the Religious Museum and the
Museum of Panamanian Man.
The tours are open to the general
public. A liberal leave policy will be
in effect during Hispanic Heritage
Week so that employees may
participate in this Equal Oppor-
tunity Program. There will be no
cost to participate in the program.

school bus service .. .


School bus service for school
children sponsored by U.S. Govern-
ment agencies for the 1979-80
school year will be handled by the
Department of Defense beginning
with the opening of school on
August 27, according to an an-
nouncement' made jointly by the
Governor of the Canal Zone and
the Commander-in-Chief of the
Southern Command.-This proce-
dure will avoid changes on October
I when the Panama Canal treaties
enter into force. The bus routes
which begin on August 27 will thus
be in effect for the entire school
year.
The buses will be operated by one
or more private school bus contract
companies, under supervision of the
Panama contract office of the
United States Navy.
The school system will continue
to be a part of the Canal Zone
Government through September
30, and from October I will operate
as the Panama Region of the
Department of Defense Dependent
School System. The administrative
and teaching staff of the school will
continue as previously.
In accordance with Department
of Defense school bus standards,
students in grades 1-6 will be bused
who live more than one mile from
school and those in grades 7-12 who
live more than 11/2 miles.
Kindergarten children will gen-
erally be bused without regard to
distance from a spot in front of their
houses or from a nearby corner.
Kindergarten children may, how-
ever, have to cross the street in order
to reach the point where they will be
picked up, and parents should pro-
vide supervision for any such street
crossing.
Special education children will be
bused from their homes to school.
Specific bus routes and stops for
grades 1-6 and 7-12 follow major
traffic arteries within the present
Canal Zone and the cities of Pan-


ama-and Colon. Such bus stops are
within the one and 11/2 mile walking
distances from home established
for the respective grade levels.
Flyers listing the routes and stops
for each community are scheduled
to be delivered this week to holders
of Canal Zone and APO postal
boxes and posted in the com-
missaries and exchanges.

children will walk to school:
Ancon: all high school students
and some elementary. Children
living in the area of Gorgas Apart-
ments and west and children living
in the area of Bayano Street and
west will walk to school.
Balboa: all high school students
and those elementary students who
live east of Thatcher Highway.
Corozal: all elementary students.
Diablo and Diablo Heights: all
elementary and all high school
students.
Gamboa: all elementary studerits.
La Boca: all high school students.
Los Rios: all elementary students.
Areas on the Atlantic side where
children will walk to school:
Coco Solo: all high school and
some elementary students.
Margarita: all elementary students.
Areas where some or all children
will walk are marked with asterisks
oh the flyer. Two errors appear on
the flyer: despite the asterisks, all
La Boca elementary children and all
Margarita junior-senior high school
students will be bused.
Any questions regarding the bus
system may be directed to the
School Bus Coordinator at 52-
5124. The phone will be manned
on Saturday.


Parfitt to host customers meeting


Canal Zone Gov. H. R. Parfitt
will host the ninth annual Panama
Canal Company Customers Meet-
ing at the Brazos Heights Country
Club at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday,
August 30.
These meetings, initiated in 1971,
provide a forum for shipping agents
and oil company representatives at
the Panama Canal to discuss with

C.Z. stamp books now on sale

Two books entitled "Canal Zone Postage Stamps" will be offered
for sale at the Balboa and Cristobal Post Offices and the Philatelic
Agency located in the Office of the Director of Posts, Civil Affairs
Building, beginning Friday, August 24.
The original book, first sold in 1961, has been reprinted and is a
history of the Canal Zone Postal Service in addition to containing
illustrated descriptions of Canal Zone postage stamps and stamped
paper. This book includes all stamps used by the Canal Zone Postal
Service from June 25, 1904 through 1960 and sells for $4(limit two per
customer).
The second book, a supplement to the original, covers the years
1961 through 1979 and sells for $2.50 (limit two per customer)!.
Special cachet envelopes depicting the Balboa and Cristobal Post
Offices will also be on sale beginning August 24 at the above locations.
The cachets are ideal for the "Last Day of Operation" cancellations
and sell for 10 cents each (limit 10 per customer).

SThis innocent note written in
Spanish and English and posted on
a bulletin board in the Engineering
Division was the catalyst for the
zany and creative madness of the
personnel in the area recently..

During the course of the first day
there appeared alongside the note
the same message expressed in dif-
ferent ways. Missives in Arabic,
Chinese, Russian, Yugoslavian,
French, German,' Portuguese,
Hindi, Polish, Italian, Greek, Cuna,
Latin, Braille, Morse Code, Pig
Latin and even mariner's flag lan-
guage pleaded for the return of the
missing dictionary.
A number of poems describing
the owner's plight were also soon
posted, as well as a song (with
score):

"I don't care what they want to say,
I want my dictionary today.
I don't care where you want to look,
Just get me back my book, my book."

They were followed by telexes, a
computer print-out, time control
sheets, a request for local leave, a route
slip, and a termination of service with

A presentation entitled "Women will include such subjects as the Gamboa Civic Center. All Canal

English from 3 to 5 p.m. on

boa High School. Aimed at guiding
women into non-traditional fields,
the program is open to the public.

After the summer's hectic ac-
tivities, most parents breathe a sigh
of relief when the children head
back to school. Most parents also
agree that trying to think of new
and exciting things to brighten the
daily lunch is a pain in the neck. So
on behalf of parents and children
everywhere we have tried to compile
a list of suggestions that may help
fight lunchbox gloom.
Sandwiches are the most uni-
versal luncheon fare, and peanut
butter is a favorite with children;
but have you tried peanut butter
with sliced bananas? or with honey?
Or peanut butter on raisin bread?
Cream cheese is another standby.
Try cream cheese withjelly on.white
bread or with sliced green olives on
white or whole wheat, or cream
cheese on banana or nut bread. Try
grilled cheese sandwiches too; they're
nearly as good cold as hot.
Many sandwiches can' be made
ahead of time and frozen, but be
sure to wrap them well or seal them
in plastic bags to retain freshness.
Those made with prepared lunch-
eon meats or sliced cold meats of
any kind (roast beef, pork, ham,
chicken, turkey, thin slices of
saut6ed filet) work very well this
way. But don't freeze lettuce or any
of the "salad" sandwiches (egg,
tuna, chicken) as they become
soggy.
"Messy" sandwiches such as egg
and tuna salad can best be sent in
square plastic sandwich containers
with covers.
Cut sandwiches in halves or
quarters; they appear more attrac-
tive and are easier to handle. For
very small children, sandwiches
may be cut in shapes with cookie
cutters and the scraps saved for
bread pudding, crumbs or croutons.
If your kids are tired of sand-
wiches, try pizza, hamburgers, hot-
dogs, carimailolas, or empanadas.
Allow them to cool before wrapping
as they will "sweat" and become
soggy.
Those squat, wide-mouthed ther-
mos jars can serve many purposes.
Use them for gelatine (pour in liquid
and harden in refrigerator, add
fruits if you like), use them for
salads (potato, macaroni, tuna,
fruit, or any other type your child
might like). Prepare them the night
before and refrigerate overnight in
the container to be sure they stay
cold until lunchtime. Use them to
send an appropriate dip for raw
vegetables that otherwise might not
get eaten.
The small thermos jars are also
good for hot foods. Try leftover
Johnny Mazzetti, baked beans with
sliced flotdogs, arroz con polio, or
stew. Or break open a can of that
all-time kids favorite, Franco-
American spaghetti.
Fill thermoses with cold bever-
ages at night and store them in the
refrigerator; they'll stay cool longer
the next day. If you forget, drop
an ice cube in the drink (even milk).
Small cans of juice can be frozen;
they'll be thawed but icy-cold by
lunchtime. Grape juice freezes well,
but experiment and find what

works best for you. A plastic straw
for drinks can prevent messes.
Small plastic bags are useful,
especially those that self-seal. Use
them for raisins (buy the big box
and apportion them; its less expen-
sive than individual boxes) or send
a mixture of raisins and nuts. Figs
or dates make a nice sweet treat if
your child likes them. Cut up fresh
fruits, such as apples and pears, in
appropriate-sized pieces and put
them in plastic bags with some
lemon or orange juice to prevent
discoloring. The commissary also
carries a preparation for this pur-
pose under the brand name Fruit
Fresh. Sliced fruit is a help for the
missing-tooth crowd.
A piece of leftover fried chicken
or a hard-boiled egg in the shell and
a container of salt, or crackers and
cheese with a few pickle slices are
a nice change, as are fried plantains,
green or ripe.
Some parents hide a treat in the
lunchbox, or make special things
like miniature cupcakes or make
a happy face with raisins on a sand-
wich. Others send little notes on
plain paper or old greeting cards
saying, "I love you" or "Eat your
carrot sticks" or both.
If you send homemade goodies or
sweets, remember that cookies,
breads and cakes laced with a little
whole wheat or wheat germ (if you


are discreet, they'll never know the
difference), raisins or nuts are more
nutritious.

Some general "does" and don'tt"
picked up from schoolteachers are:
* Use lunch boxes rather than
paper bags because a leaking
thermos or juicy sandwich can
weaken the bag and result in the
lunch falling out.
* Provide at least one napkin,
preferably two.
* Don't send glass containers or
sharp objects, such as knives and
pull-tab cans, with little ones.
* Don't send carbonated drinks
because they can explode.
Remember that while pumper-
nickel, rye and whole wheat bread,
alfalfa sprouts and cucumber or
watercress sandwiches may appeal
to your own sophisticated tastes, if
your child doesn't like them don't
send them in his lunch. They will
probably come right back or end
up in the school wastebasket.

Bear in mind that elementary
school children have only a 20-
minute lunch break, so prepare
things in an appropriate quantity
and manner that will allow your
child to finish in the allotted time.
It's also a good idea to provide your
child with a toothbrush and tooth-
paste to keep in his desk so that he
may brush after lunch at school.

Special training for emergency med techs


A training session on the use of
self-contained breathing apparatus
will be conducted by the Isthmian
Association of Emergency Medical
Technicians at 10 a.m. tomorrow, at
the Rodman Fire House. The
training is open to all emergency
medical technicians on the Isthmus.


Students should wear work-type
trousers and shirts and sturdy shoes
(other protective clothing will be
furnished). After the classroom
instruction, students will have the
opportunity to use the equipment in
the smoke house at the Rodman
Fire Training Center.


McAuliffe to speak
on changes to C.Z.
at engineers' meeting
Lt. Gen. Dennis P. McAuliffe,
recently nominated by President
Carter to be the first Administrator
of the new Panama Canal Com-
mission, will be the guest speaker at
the August 29 dinner meeting of the
Society of American Military En-
gineers. General McAuliffe's talk
will relate to the many changes that
will soon be taking place in what is
now the Canal Zone.
The meeting will be held at the
Rodman Officer's Club with a
social hour beginning at 6:30 p.m.
and dinner at 7:30. Dress is guaya-
bera. Cost is $5.75 per person.

Solution


McKinley Avenue between Gaillard Highway and Anton Street
will be closed to traffic beginning Monday, August 27, for
approximately three to four weeks. Several ductlines will be
installed under the surface of the roadway to carry com-
munication cables to the telephone exchange. Barricades will
be placed at each end of the construction area and alternate
routes provided as shown in the above sketch.

Nearly 3,000 employees of the
Canal organization involved in the
transfer of function to the Depart-
ment of Defense on October 1 have
received letters from the Civilian
Personnel Office, 193d Infantry
Brigade. These letters made specific
job offers and included other
general information, but did not, of
course, contain information that


would answer personal questions
relating to individual transfers.

Individuals who are affected by
the transfer of function and who
have questions may call the Civilian
Personnel Office at 85-4104 or 85-
4160 between the hours of 8 a.m.
and noon, Wednesday through
Friday.


If you are a U.S.-citizen em-
ployee planning to shop in the
military exchanges or commissaries
beginning October 1, remember
that you'll need a Commission
identification card to be able to do
so. .
The License Section's Passport/
Identification Card Section reports
slow community response to its
postal card notices requesting that
families set up an appointment for
the interview that is essential to
obtaining these needed documents.
What employees may not realize is
that receipt of the notice means that
all of the information and photo-
graphs for an individual family has
been assembled by the License
Section and is ready for processing.
Some notices have been mailed
and some have yet to be sent.


Failure to respond to the notice
holds up the documentation pro-
gram and may result in some
persons finding themselves without
the necessary credentials to use
facilities and services such as
hospitals and commissaries on
October 1.
The interviews take approxi-
mately half an hour and are being
scheduled (by appointment only)
between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and
5:30 p.m., Monday through Satur-
day on both sides of the Isthmus.
Atlantic siders report to the
second floor of the Margarita Serv-
ice Center. On the Pacific side, the
location is the License Section of
the Civil Affairs Building, through
the double doors at the rear of the
building.

the original copy of a birth
certificate or Certificate of U.S.
citizenship for each family member
and current Canal Zone identifica-
tion cards. Documents will not be
issued at the time of interview. Em-
ployees will be notified to pick them
up toward the latter part of
September.

Non-U.S.-citizen employees of
the Panama Canal Company/
Canal Zone Government, members
of the private sector in the Canal
Zone and their dependents may
now obtain their Panamanian
driver's licenses through the special
licensing program in operation at
the Red Cross Building in Ancon
and at Building 311 at Fort Gulick.
Previously this program was
limited to U.S. citizens living in
the Canal Zone.
The hours are 8 a.m. to noon and
1 to 5 p.m. every day except Sun-
days now through September 30.
For their own convenience, appli-
cants who arrive near closing time
at noon or in the evening on busy
days will be told whether they can
be processed in the time remaining.
Those who cannot be processed


'before closing time will be asked
to return that afternoon or the
following morning.
Applicants will be required to
present a C.Z. identification card,
a C.Z. driver's license, a certificate
of blood type and a receipt from any
branch of the Banco Nacional in
Panama for the $10 licensing fee.
Free blood typing without physi-
cian referral is now available at
Gorgas and Coco Solo hospital
laboratories through September 30.
Blood typing is also free at the
Santo Tomis Hospital Medical
laboratory and all Panama Govern-
ment medical centers.
All residents of the Canal Zone
other than U.S.-citizen-employees
of the Canal organization will be
required to have a Panamanian
driver's license on October 1.

naje a los empleados antillanos de la
era de la construcci6n del Canal y
sus descendientes en ceremonia
celebrada en Rainbow City. El
Gobernador de la Zona del Canal
Harold R. Parfitt habl6 sobre la
participaci6n de los antillanos en la
construcci6n y en la operaci6n del
Canal en un program que marc6 el
650 aniversario de la via inter-
oceanica.
El Director Regional del Sindi-
cato Nacional Maritimo Edward
Gaskin fue el orador principal, y
habl6 sobre la historic de los antilla-
nos y del Canal, inclusive la era de la
construcci6n del canal francs. Rin-
di6 especial honor al Gobernador
Parfitt, lo cual motiv6 aplausos de
la concurrencia.

Mediante Decreto Presidencial,

Nacional del Patrimonio Hispi-

cipal de la semana sera una series de

dad de aprender mas sobre este rico

El servicio de bus escolar para
nifios patrocinados por agencies del
Gobierno de los Estados Unidos
para el afio escolar 1979-80 estard a
cargo del Departamento de Defensa
comenzando con la apertura de las
escuelas el 27 de agosto, seg6n
anuncio hecho conjuntamente por
el Gobernador de la Zona del Canal
y el Comandante en Jefe del
Comando Sur. Este procedimiento
evitara cambios el 1� de octubre
cuando los tratados del Canal de
Panama entren en vigencia. Las
rutas escolares que comienzan el 27
de agosto estaran en vigor durante
todo el afio escolar.
Los buses seran contratados de
una o mas compaftias privadas,
bajo la supervision de la oficina de
contratos de la Armada de los Esta-
dos Unidos.
El sistema escolar continuara
siendo parte integral del Gobierno
de la Zona del Canal hasta el 30 de
septiembre, y-desde el I� de octubre
funcionara como la Regi6n de
Panama del Sistema de Escuelas
Dependientes del Departamento de
Defense. El personal administra-
tivo y. docente continuara como
antes.
De acuerdo con las normas del-
Departamento de Defensa en lo
concerniente a buses escolares, los
estudiantes en los grades I al 6 seran
transportados si viven mas de una
milla de la escuela y aquellos en los
grades 7 al 12 si viven a mas de una
milla y media.
Los nifios que asisten al kinder
generalmente son transportados sin
importar la distancia desde un
punto frente a sus casas o de una
esquina cercana. No obstante,
puede darse el caso de que los nifios
de kipder tendran que cruzar la calle
a fin de Ilegar al punto donde seran
recogidos. En tal caso, los padres
deberan proporcionar la supervi-
si6n necesaria.
Los nifios que asisten a educaci6n
especial se-ran transportados desde
sus hogares hasta la escuela.
Los buses escolares y paradas
especificas para los grades 1 al 6 y 7
al 12 siguen las principles arteries
dentro de la actual Zona del Canal y
las ciudades de Panama y Col6n.

Venta de libros sobre sellos
Dos libros intitulados Canal Zone Postage Stamps (Sellos de la
Zona del Canal) estaran en venta en los Correos de Balboa y Crist6bal
y en la Agencia Filat6lica ubicada en la Oficina del Director de
Correos, Edificio de Asuntos Civiles, a partir del viernes 24de agosto.
El libro original, que se vendi6 por primera vez en 1961, ha sido
reimpreso y es una historic del Servicio de Correos de la Zona del
Canal ademas de contener descripciones ilustradas de los sellos de la
Zona del Canal y papel sellado. Este libro incluye todos los sellos que
han sido usados por el Servicio de Correos de la Zona del Canal desde
el'25 de junio de 1904 hasta 1960, y cuesta $4 (2 ejemplares por
persona).
El segundo libro, un suplemento del original, abarca los afios 1961
hasta 1979, y cuesta $2.50 (2 ejemplares por persona).
Sobres con sellos conmemorativos especiales que muestran los
correos de Balboa y Crist6bal tambi6n estai-n en venta a partir del
viernes 24 de agosto en las ubicaciones arriba mencionadas. Los sellos
conmemorativos son ideales para las cancelaciones del "Ultimo Dia
de Operaci6n" y cuestan 10 centavos cada uno (10 sobres por
persona).

Los ingenieros no saben como decirlo, pero lo

cierto es que el famoso libro auin sigue perdido


"La persona que pidi6 prestado
un diccionario t6cnico irigl6s/espa-
fiol de la oficina Meteorol6gica e
HidrogrAfica tenga la bondad de
devolverlo. Lo necesito".
Esta -inocente nota escrita en
espafiol e ingl6s y fijada en un
tablero de avisos en la Divisi6n de
Ingenieria recientemente dio lugar a
una extensa, variada y divertida
series de mensajes.
Durante el primer dia apareci6
junto a la nota el mismo mensaje
escrito de diferentes maneras. Las
misivas en drabe, chino, ruso,
yugoslavo, francs, alemdn, portu-
gu6s, hindi, polaco, italiano, griego,
cuna, latin, Braille, c6digo Morse,
jerigonza y hasta sefiales con bande-
ras de mariners, suplicaban por la
devoluci6n del diccionario.
Un n6mero de poesias en que se
describia la angustia del duefio,
tambi6n fueron fijadas, asi como
tambien una canci6n (con m6sica):


"No me import lo que quieran decir,
Yo quiero mi diccionario hoy.'
No me importa done quieran buscarlo,
Sdlo devuelvanme mi libro, mi libro ".


Fueron seguidas por mensajes
por telex, computadora, hojas de
control de tiempo, una solicitud
para vacaciones, un pedazo de
papel con direcciones y una hoja de
terminaci6n de servicio con "No
puedo encontrar mi diccionario"
como motive de la renuncia y "fir-


mada" por el escritor original de la
nota, que se sorprendera cuando
yea a que condujo su simple solici-
tud cuando regrese a la oficina.


No cabe duda que tambien que-
dard desilusionado de saber que el
paradero de su diccionario ain
sigue siendo un misterio.

Despies de las agitadas activi-
dades de las vacaciones, la mayoria
de los padres de familiar darn un
suspiro de alivio cuando los nifios
regresen a la escuela. La mayoria de
ellos tambi6n estin de acuerdo que
el tratar de pensar en cosas nuevas y
excitantes para alegrar el almuerzo
diario es un dolor de cabeza. De
manera que, en nombre de los
padres y de los nifios, hemos tratado
'de recopilar una lista de sugerencias
que tal vez ayuden a library la batalla
del almuerzo.
Los emparedados son los almuer-
zos mas universales, y las de mante-
quilla de mani los favorites entire los
nifios; pero iha probado la mante-
quilla de mani con rebanadas de
guineo? ,o con miel? ,O mantequilla
de mani con pan de pasas?
El queso crema es otro saca de
apuro. Pruebe el queso .crema con
jalea en pan blanco o con aceitunas
verdes en rebanadas en pan blanco
o de trigo o queso crema en pan de
guineo o de nueces," Pruebe los
emparedados de queso derretido
tambi6n; son casi tan buenos frios
como calientes.
Hay muchos emparedados que se
pueden hacer de antemano y conge-
lados, pero asegfrese de envolverlos
bien o de sellarlos en bolsas plAsti-
cas para retener su frescura. Aque-
llos que son hechos de fiambres
preparados o de rebanadas de car-
nes frias de cualquier clase caree
asada, puerco, jam6n, polio, pavo,
rebanadas delgadas de filete) tienen
buenos resultados en esta forma.
Pero no congele la lechuga o cual-
quiera de los emperadados de ensa-
lada (huevo, tuna, polio) puesto que
quedan saturados de humedad.
Emparedados que son deficiles de
llevar tales como ensalada de huevo
y de tuna pueden mejor mandarse
en recipients plasticos cuadrados
para emparedados con tapas.
Corte los emparedados en dos o
en cuatro pedazos; tienen mejor
apariencia y son mas fiaciles de aga-
rrar. Para los pequefiuelos, los
emparedados pueden ser cortados
en distintas formas usando los mol-
des de galletitas y-los (sobrantes
pueden usarse para hacer pudin de
pan, pan rallado o cubitos de pan
tostados).
Si sus hijos estAn cansados de
comer emparedados, pruebe pizza.
hamburguesas, hot dogs (perros
calientes), carimafiolas o empana-
das. D6jelos enfriar antes de envol-
verlos puesto que "sudarin" y
quedaran saturados de humedad.
Aquellos terms de boca ancha
pueden servir muchos prop6sitos.
Uselos para hacer gelatina (vierta el
liquido'en l1 y p6ngalo a endurecer
en la refrigeradora, agreguefrutas si
lo desea), 6selos para llevar ensala-
das (de papas, macarrones, tuna,
fruta o cualquier otra clase que le
guste a su hijo). PrepArela la noche
antes y p6ngala en la refrigeradora
durante la noche en el recipient
para asegurar que quedaran frias
hasta la hora de almuerzo. Uselos
para mandar una salsa apropiada
para los vegetables crudos que de lo
contrario no serian apetecibles.
Los terms pequefos tambi6n
son buenos-para comidas calientes.
Haga la prueba con la comida que
sobr6 de la noche anterior como
Johnny Mazzetti, frijoles con hot
dogs en rebanadas, arroz con pollo
o estofado. O abra una lata del
siempre favorite de los nifios, fideos
largos Franco-American.

bus escolar pueden obtenerse en los almacenes de ventas al por menor del
Canal de Panama y seran enviados a los apartados postales en fecha

A la hora del almuerzo el jugo ya

Las bolsas pequefias plasticas son
muy (tiles, especialmente aquellas
que son autoselladoras. Uselas para
pasas comparee la caja grande y
repartalas; es mis econ6mica que
las cajitas individuals) o made
una mezcla de pasas y nueces. Los
higos o datiles son deliciosos. Corte
las frutas frescas tales como manza-
nas y peras, en pedazos y p6ngalos
en bolsas plasticas con un poco de
jugo de lim6n o de naranja a fin de
evitar que se desoloren. El comisa-
riato tambi6n vende una prepara-
ci6n especial para este proposito
con el nombre de fibrica "Fruit
Fresh". La fruta en rebanadas es
muy buena para los nifios que les
faltan dientes.
Un pedazo de polio frito que
sobr6 de la noche anterior o huevo
hervido duro en la cascara y un
salero, o galletas y queso con unas
rebanados de pepino o plitanos fri-
tos, verdes o maduros.
Hay algunos padres que escon-
den una sorpresa con el almuerzo o
hacen cosas especiales como bizco-
chitos. Otros envian notitas en
papel blanco o en viejas tarjetas que
dicen; "Te quiero much" o "C6-
mase sus palitos de zanahoria" o
ambos.
Si manda dulces confeccionados


en casa, recuerde que las galletitas,
panes y bizcochos rociados con un
poquito de trigo entero o germen de
trigo (si es discreto nunca sabrAn la
diferencia), pasas o nueces son
much mas nutritivos.
Algunas sugerencias generals
sobre 16 que se debe y lo que no se
debe hacer obtenidas de los maes-
tros son:
* Use loncheras en vez de bolsas
de papel porque un termo que gotee
o emparedados jugosos pueden
debilitar la bolsa y se caerd el
almuerzo.
* Ponga en la lonchera por lo
menos una servilleta, preferible-
mente dos.
* En el caso de nifios pequefios,
no made recipients de vidrio u
objetos afilados, como cuchillos y
latas que se abren halando la tapita.
* No made sodas porque pue-
den explotar.
Recuerde que aunque los empa-
redados de pan negro de centeno
con semillas de alcaravea, pan de
centeno y pan de trigo entero, reto-
fios de alfalfa y pepinos o berro pue-
den gustarle a usted, si a su hijo no
les gusta no se los ponga en su lon-
chera. Lo mis probable es que lo
traeran de vuelta a casa o termina-
ran en la basura de la escuela.
Tenga present que los nifios de la
escuela primaria s6lo tienen 20
minutes para almorzar, por lo tanto
prepareles el almuerzo en una canti-
dad y manera apropiada para que lo
pueda comer en el tiempo desig-
nado. Tambi6n es buena idea pro-
porcionar a su hijo un cepillo de
dientes y pasta dentifrica para tener
en su pupitre a fin de cepillarse los
dientes despu6s de almorzar en la
escuela.

Jamboree de f6tbol de 1979 originalmente programado para la tarde

Una sesi6n de adiestramiento en
el uso de un aparato respiratorio
sera Ilevada a cabo por la Asocia-
ci6n Istmica de Tecnicos M6dicos
de Emergencia a las 10 a.m. el sa-
bado 25 de agosto en la Estaci6n de
Bomberos de Rodman. El adiestra-

El Teniente General Dennis P.
McAuliffe, nominado recientemen-
te por el Presidente Carter para ser
el primer Administrador de la
Comisi6n del Canal de PanamA,
sera el orador invitado en la cena-
reuni6n que celebrara la Sociedad
de Ingenieros Militares Americanos
el 29 de agosto. La charla del Gene-
ral McAuliffe se relacionara con los
numerosos cambios que muy pron-
to tendran lugar en lo que es actual-
mente la Zona del Canal.
La reunion tendra lugar en el
Club de Oficiales de Rodman y
habra una hora social comenzando

Si usted es un empleado estadou-
nidense que proyecta hacer sus
compras en las tiendas o comisaria-
tos militares a partir del 10 de octu-
bre, recuerde que para hacerlo
necesitara una tarjeta de identifica-
ci6n de la Comisi6n.
El departamento de Pasaportes-
Tarjetas de Identificaci6n de la Sec-
ci6n de Licencias informa que hay
muy poca reacci6n por parte de la
comunidad a sus avisos en los cuales
solicitan a las families concertar
una cita para la entrevista que es
esencial para obtener estos docu-
mentos tan necesarios. Tal vez los
empleados no saben que el recibo de
los avisos significa que toda la infor-
maci6n y las fotografias para una
familiar ha sido reunida por la Sec-
ci6n de Licencias y esta lista para su
tramitaci6n.
Algunos de los avisos han sido
enviados y todavia faltan algunos


por enviarse. Al dejar de responder
al aviso, se atrasa el program de
documentaci6n y puede resultar en
que al llegar el 10 de octubre algunas
personas se encuentren sin los docu-
mentos necesarios para usar las ins-
talaciones y los servicios tales como
hospitals y comisariatos.
Las entrevistas toman aproxima-
damente media hora y estan siendo
programadas (s6lo por cita) entire
las horas 7:30 a.m. y 5:30 p.m., de
lunes a sabado en ambos sectors
del Istmo.
Los residents del sector AtlAn-
tico se presentaran al segundo piso
del Centro de Servicios de Marga-
rita. En el sector Pacifico, la ubica-
ci6n es la Secci6n de Licencias en el
Edificio de Asuntos Civiles en-
trando por las puertas doubles al
fondo del edificio.
Los empleados deben estar acom-
pafiados por sus esposas(os) y todos

Aproximadamente 3,000 emplea-
dos de la empresa del Canal inclui-
dos en la transferencia de funciones
al Departamento de Defensa el 10
de octubre ban recibido cartas de la
Oficina de Personal Civil de la Bri-
gada 193 de Infanteria. En estas se
ofrecen empleos especificos e infor-
maci6n general a dichos empleados
pero, desde luego, no contienen


Los empleados no estadouniden-
ses de la Compafiia del Canal de
Panama y Gobierno de la Zona del
Canal, miembros del sector privado
en la Zona del Canal y sus depen-
dientes residents en la Zona ahora
pueden obtener sus licencias de con-
ducir de la Rep6blica de Panama a
traves del program especial de
licencias que esta en operaci6n en el
Edificio de la Cruz Roja en Anc6n y
en el Edificio 311 en el Fuerte
Gulick.
Previamente este program esta-
ba limitado a ciudadanos estadou-
nidenses que resident en la Zona del
Canal.
Las horas son de 8 a.m. a 12 meri-
diano y de 1 a 5 p.m. todos los dias
except domingo hasta el 30 de sep-
tiembre. Para su propia convenien-
cia, a los solicitantes que Ileguen
casi a la hora de cerrar al medio dia
o en la tarde los dias de much
movimiento, se les informara si se
les puede procesar en el tiempo que
falta. Aquellos que no se puedan


informaci6n que pudiera contestar
a las preguntas personales sobre la
transferencia de individuos. Las
