Life in the Great Outdoors-Awaits Retired

"As my employer, the Panama
Canal has been incredibly good to
me. I couldn't have asked for
better." Those were the sentiments
expressed by Bob Jeffrey last week
as he closed out his 30-year Federal
career.
As Deputy Executive Secretary,
Jeffrey has had responsibility for
helping to formulate and administer
the policies of the Canal Zone
Government, the part of the Canal
organization that has the most
direct impact on the day-to-day
lives of Zone residents.
Because we in the Canal Zone
live on what is in effect a big
Government reservation, Jeffrey
says, the Government is of necessity
involved in matters that would
otherwise be the private affairs
of citizens.
It is this involvement in the lives
of Canal Zone residents-whether
it be to give an employee permission
to bring additional dependents into
the Zone or to authorize the
opening of a day care center in a
private home-that has been both
Ih:. i ;g.-c, r cause-for concern and&ihS
greatest source of satisfaction.
Jeffrey says, "This is the area in
which we've tried to do our most
valuable work and to keep the em-
ployee, his welfare and his peace of
mind, as our first concern. Our
guiding philosophy is to do our
very best for the employee, although
it is the nature of our work that the
employee cannot always see this. "
Except for three years in the Navy
taking part in amphibious opera-


tions in the Pacific during World
War II, the major portion of
Jeffrey's Federal career has been
spent in the Canal Zone. He arrived
here in 1952 and taught history and
English at Balboa High School
for four years. He moved from
there to a job in the Personnel
Bureau, then on to the Office of the
Executive Secretary, where he's

esting way life has of allowing the
younger generation to catch up
with the older, Jeffrey has seen two
of his high school students, Fred
Cotton and Bruce Quinn, join him
as members of the Governor's
staff.
It was while he was with the Per-
sonnel Bureau that Jeffrey was

career. He was sent to Washington,
D.C. for six months to participate
in a Civil Service Management
Intern Program. During that time
he worked in the White House, the
State Department and the Air
Force.

ing performance in every area of the

But for a man who made it to the
top, who has done the coat and tie "
routine for years and waded through
mountains of paperwork; Jeffrey is.
an anomaly. At heart, he is an
outdoorsman. He holds a lifetime
membership in t-he Natibnal Rifle
Association and is an expert shot,
but shoots only at paper targets.
He has traveled all over the Isthmus
of Panama, into areas accessible
only by jeep. Ostensibly the trips are
birdwatching ventures-he was vice
president of the local chapter of the
Audubon Society last year-but
Jeffrey experiences an all-pervasive - .
sense of the wonder and beauty of .
nature as a whole, finding, as Word-

'Scared Straight' To Be Shown Thursday On SCN


Scared Straight, an award-winning
critically acclaimed television doc-
umentary on a "shock treatment"
method of fighting juvenile delin-
quency will be shown on SCN-TV
(Channels 8 and 10) at 9 p.m.,.
Thursday, May 17.
The hard-hitting documentary
focuses on a New Jersey program
that seeks to steer youthful of-
fenders from crime by exposing


them to verbal abuse from hardened
criminals during a visit to the
Rahway State Prison.
Rough, obscene language pre-
vails as the prison inmates "tell it
straight" on crime and the raw, dis-
tasteful realities of prison life as
they verbally abuse the youthful
offenders who have been brought to
the prison for the encounter.

John A. Evans Gets Temporary Assignment


John A. Evans, an attorney on
the staff of the Office of the General
Counsel, has been temporarily
assigned as acting assistant direc-
tor of the Supply and Community
Service Bureau and will serve in that
capacity until September 30.
A specialist in procurement law,
Evans assumed his new duties on
March 25. He will assist the Supply
and Community Service Bureau in
a number of functional areas, in-
cluding a heavy procurement man-
agement workload anticipated through
the rest of the fiscal year and
planning for treaty implementation
for property transfer and disposi-


tion, housing matters, and procure-
ment policies for the Panama Canal
Commission.

Evans joined the Office of the
General Counsel as a contracts
attorney in- September 1976 with
several years of experience in that
speciality. He holds a bachelor's
degree from the Universtiy of
Florida, the Juris Doctor degree
from the University of Mississippi
and the Master of Law from
Georgetown University in Wash-
ington, D.C. He is a member of the
Mississippi State Bar and the Canal
Zone Bar Association.

been shown by some 60 stations
throughout the United States. Praise
for the program has been virtually
unanimous, and stations have found
that, instead of protests for the ex-
plicit language, viewers were re-
sponding with favor to the pro-
gram, and its effort to deter teenage
crime.
The local showing of Scared
Straight has been strongly endorsed
by Canal Zone community, civic,
military and educational leaders as
a means of informing the com-
munity on a critical concern of this
era-teenage crime.
They note, however, that the pro-
gram, is not for pre-teen viewing,
nor for those who might not be able
to accept the coarse language used.
Following Scared Straight there
will be a 30-minute follow-up with
Dick Cavett interviewing the super-
intendent of the prison, one of the
inmates and three of the 17 youths
who participated in the program.
In all, the special program will be
from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on
May 17.


Little Kimberly Lee knows what's needed to get herself and mother Triana
M. Lee into the Balboa Retail Store these days. David Gunsteen is one of
several new employees hired by the Customs Division to check purchase
authority cards at the doors of all Panama Canal stores in an effort to
prevent contrabanding. Since the program began just six weeks ago,
inspectors have lifted 150 expired or otherwise invalid cards.


No More PRD for CZC
The Financial Vice President has
announced that payroll deduction
will no longer be available for pay-
ment of Canal Zone College tuition
and dormitory fees. This restriction,
which is in line with other actions to
phase out employee credit prior to
the entry into force of the treaty,
will apply to registration for the fall
semester and thereafter, but not to
registration for the summer session.
To avoid confusion, it should be
noted that registration for the

summer session begins June 1, with
classes beginning on June11 I. Regis-
tration for the fall semester, how-
ever, will begin on May 14 to permit
those who will be on vacation
during the summer to register in
advance. Registration for the fall
semester will continue through the
summer and classes will begin on
August 13.

summer and fall class offerings are
available at the College office.


Micro Computer Demonstration Set at Cl. Library


If you've heard about home com-
puters and wondered what they can
do for you, you can get the answers
next week at the Canal Zone
Library.
A group of Canal employees will
take their own computers to the
library to demonstrate four dif-
ferent micro computers designed
for home use.


Giving the demonstrations and
answering.questions from 7 to 9
p.m., May 14 and 15, will be
Dr. Anthony Suescum, Bill Burns,
Jake Meyers, Raymond Dragseth
and others.

FSU Quarter 5 To Begin May 19


The next academic quarter of
Florida State University, Panama
Canal Branch, will begin May 19
and end July 14. Forty-three
courses will be offered on the
Pacific side at Albrook AFS and
Fort Kobbe, and ten on the Atlantic
side at Fort Davis and Fort
Sherman:
Paraiso Credit Union
Paraiso Federal Credit Union
No. 5857 will close at noon each
Friday beginning today. The new
hours of operation are necessary to
give office personnel time to update
records and do other administra-
tive duties.
The change will not affect the
payday for Civil Service retirees on
June 1.


Courses will include a wide range
of subjects. Some are designed to
fulfill the liberal studies require-
ments for all students, and others to
complete requirements of business
administration, social science, in-
teramerican studies, international
affairs, English or Spanish majors.

Classes are held weekdays from
noon until 10 p.m. and Saturdays
from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Prospective students should con-
tact the FSU office prior to
registration week.
Registration for Quarter V will
take place May 15 to 17 at Building
808, Albrook, and Building 32,
Fort Davis.

Antonio, during two weeks of hearings held on the
Isthmus last month. Immigration and Naturalization
officials handled 105 local citizenship matters in April,
bringing to 5,935 the number of certificates awarded
since the program began inthe ('anal Zone in 1966.
Applications for certificates continue to be accepted at
the Customs offices in Balboa and Cristobal.


C.Z. SPCA Meeting
There will be a meeting of the
Canal Zone Society for the Pre-
vention of Cruelty to Animals at
7 p.m., Monday, May 14, in
Room I of the Panama Canal
Training Center. Everyone in-
terested is urged to attend.

Nurses and Children-A Winning Combination


In recognition of the role that
nurses have played on the Isthmus
since 1904, when nurse Mary
Eugenie Hibbard became the first
woman to be hired by the Panama
Canal Commission, Gov. H. R.
Parfitt has issued a proclamation
declaring today, May 11, as Nurses'
Day in the Canal Zone.
In his proclamation the Governor
called for the day to be set aside "as
a tribute to all members of the pro-
fession in the Canal Zone whose
dedication to duty in ministering to
the health needs of its citizens has
been in keeping with the highest
traditions of the profession."
In celebration of the event, teas
have been held today for nurses at
Gorgas and Coco Solo hospitals,
and guest lectures are being given
today and tomorrow by a nurse
consultant brought from the United
States.
The theme of this year's celebra-
tion is the part that nurses play in
the lives of Canal Zone children. It
was chosen in recognition of the fact
that the United Nations has declared
1979 to be the International Year of
the Child in order to draw atten-
tion to the situation of children
throughout the world and to
promote their well being, protect
their human rights, and develop
their cultural and legal identity.
Canal Zone nurses are using their
skills and training both profes-
sionally and on a volunteer basis for
the benefit of children in every area
of community life. For example:
-Pediatric nurse practitioner
Olly Tonk of the Balboa Commu-
nity:- Health- Center's Well Baby
Clinic carefully monitors the devel-
opment of babies on the Pacific side
from infancy through five years of
age,-administering vital immuniza-
tions and advising mothers on child
care. She also sees sick children in
the Pediatrics Clinic twice a week
and gives post partum classes in
child care at the Gorgas Hospital
obstetrics ward.

Nurse Sarah Weaver takes care of
the day-to-day minor injuries and
ailments of students and faculty,
administers hearing tests and phys-
ical examinations, and gives eye
examinations and skin tests to the
entire student body in the course of
the school year. She also acts as
confidant and counselor to the
youngsters in her care. She teaches


health in the classrooms upon
request and asst-ls~ rtdh the searl:,
dental examinations.
-In addition to her day-to-
day duties, public health nurse Jo
Wieand dedicates outside time to
the Joint Committee on Child
Abuse and Neglect. She discusses
cases with social workers and helps
decide what method of treatment
to recommend.


-Jackie June is the assistant
director of nursing at the Canal
Zone Mental Health Center, but-
works after hours with the Girl
Scouts. She's been a troop leader, a
cadet leader, and is presently a
training coordinator and 2d vice
president of the Canal Zone Girl
Scout Council. She has spent a
summer as a camp nurse and has
taken cadet and senior Girl Scouts
on five-day primitive camping trips
to the San Blas Islands.
-Orthopedic nurse Trinie Na-
barrete spends off duty hours pat-
terning children enrolled in the Fort
Clayton Special Education Pro-
gram. Her efforts are aimed at
helping these slow children to
develop to their maximum potential
physically and mentally.
-Marian Gregg has spent
28 years of her life as a pediatric
nurse at Colon and Coco Solo hos-
S pitals. She cares for children of all
ages in a 14-bed ward. Her-respon-


sibilities range from feeding, bath-
ing, changing and comforting babies
to administering medicines and
injections, monitoring the progress
of children recovering from surgery
or illness and just being a friend to
a sick child who needs someone to
take the time.

-Sharon DeStaffino wears
two hats, a nursing cap for her
duties at Palo Seco Hospital and a
den mother's cap when she works
with Cub Scout Troop 21 of Bal-
boa. She helps the eight and nine-
year-old boys work for badges and
do art and crafts and takes them on
hikes and picnics.
These nurses are representative
of many more who are giving of
their time and talents in seeing to
the physical, mental and emotional
welfare of Canal Zone children, not
only during this special Inter-
national Year of the Child, but
every day of every year.

WHEREAS the nursing profession has played a major role on the
Isthmus since the United States first undertook the great task of building
the Panama Canal in 1904; and
WHEREAS the first woman to be employed by the Isthmian Panama
Canal Commission, just one month after the United States Government
acquired the French property, was a nurse Mary Eugenie Hibbard; and
WHEREAS for nearly seventy-five years nurses have been an integral
and vital part of the health care services provided to residents of the Canal
Zone;
NOW,THEREFORE, I H. R. PARFITT, GovernoroftheCanalZone,
do hereby proclaim Friday, May I 1, 1979, as Nurses' Day as tribute to all
members of the profession in the Canal Zone whose dedication to duty in
ministering to the health needs of its citizens has been in keeping with the
highest traditions of the profession.

Adolfo Arias E., Actor, Businessman, Diplomat, Is King Again

Adolfo Arias E., a veteran actor,
diplomat and businessman, will
portray the king in the United Way
summer musical production The
King anid I, it' was announced by
producer-director Bruce Quinn.
This is Arias' third appearance in
a United Way play. He appeared in
the 1965 production of The King
and I, and played Teyve in
Fiddler on the Roof.
Arias has appeared in 33 thea-
trical presentations and in three
major films. Locally, he has played
King Henry IV in the Theatre
Guild's production of Becket; Gus-
tavo in the Teatro en Circulo's pro-
duction of Las Tres Perfectas
Casadas; Lattimore in the Guild's

Max in A Margin of Error; Krog-
stad in A Doll's House and others.
The Kinrg and I will open at the
Balboa High School Auditorium
on July 26 for a two-week run.

he says, an extremely efficient
organization run by a businessman
that has saved hundreds of areas in
the United States from ecological
ruin. One senses that he is impatient
with the rhetoric of environmen-
talists, but is attracted to people
who act.
The Jeffreys will make their
retirement home in Bisbee, Ariz.,
an old mining town southeast of
Tucson. Jeffrey's grandfather, the
family patriarch, was a Welshman
who went West in the 1870's at age
17 and became a pioneer mining
foreman in Bisbee. Jeffrey wrote a
thesis on Douglas, Ariz., to obtain
his master's degree from the Univer-
sity of Arizona. In Bisbee he'll'
pursue his interest in the history of
the state, he says, as well as
activities that will keep him out of
doors.


The Nikolais Dance Theatre returns to Panama May 16 and 17 for two
performances in the National Theatre. Alwin Nikolais, the group's
director, has created a distinctive dance form, noted for its imaginative
use of movement, light, color and sound. His innovative approach has
gained him the acclaim of dance enthusiasts around the world. The famous
New York-based dance company performed in Panama in 1977.

Armed Forces Day


Observances


Planned for May 19

Armed Forces Day '79 will be
celebrated by the U.S. Southern
Command this year with observ-
ances at Albrook Air Force Station
and Cristobal High School Tiger
Stadium on Saturday, May 19.
Both events are open to the public.
The theme for the now traditional
Armed Forces Day will be "Forces
for Peace." At both Albrook AFS
and Cristobal High School, the
components of Southern Com-
mand will have on display many of
the aircraft, tactical vehicles and
equipment used in their assigned
mission, the defense of the Panama
Canal.
At Albrook, the exhibits will
open at 8:30 a.m. and visitors to
the base will find an exciting array
of military equipment on display.
Included will be armored personnel
carriers and other tactical vehicles,
helicopters, and small arms displays
from the 193d Infantry Brigade, an
O-2A light observation aircraft and
UH-IN helicopter gunship from the
U.S. Air Force Southern Air Divi-
sion, a model of a Poseidon sub-
marine from the U.S. Naval Station
Panama Canal and a colorful dis-
play of uniforms by the U.S. Marine
Corps from the Marine Barracks
here.
The morning's festivities get off
to a rousing start at Albrook at 9
a.m. with a military parade and
review. U.S. Southern Command
Commander-in-C~hief Lt. Gen. D.P.
MacAuliffe will formally review the
command.
During the Albrook parade and
review, a 21-gun salute will be fired
by Battery B, 22d Field Artillery,
193d Combat Support Battalion
and the A-7D Corsair II fighter
bombers of the South Carolina Air
National Guard will perform two
fly-bys.
At Cristobal High School's Tiger
Stadium, guests will find a similar
crowd-pleasing array of exhibits,
displays and A-7D fly-bys. On the
Atlantic side the exhibits will open
at 9 a.m., with the formal military
parade and review scheduled for
11 a.m.
Both the Albrook and Cristobal
events will end at noon.

"Como patr6n, el Canal de
Panama ha sido increiblemente
bueno conmigo. No hubiera podido
pedir uno mejor". Asi se expres6
Bob Jeffrey la semana pasada al
cerrar su carrera Federal de 30 afios.
Como Subsecretario Ejecutivo,
Jeffrey ha tenido la responsabilidad
de ayudar a formular y a adminis-
trar las normas del Gobierno de la
Zona del Canal, la parte de la em-
presa del Canal que tiene el.mas
director impact en la vida cotidiana
de los residents de la Zona.
Debido a que nosotros en la Zona
del Canal vivimos en lo que es en
efecto una gran reservaci6n del
gobierno, dice Jeffrey, el Gobierno
por necesidad participa en asuntos
que de lo contrario serian asuntos
privados de los ciudadanos.
El poder tomar parte en las vidas
de los residents de la Zona del
Canal-ya sea para dar a un em-
pleado permiso para traer a otros
dependientes a la Zona del Canal o
para autorizar la apertura de una
guarderia en una casa particular-
ha sido su gran motivo de preocupa-
ci6n y su maxima fuente de satisfac-
ci6n. Dice Jeffrey, "Esta es el area
en la cual hemos tratado de desem-
pefiar nuestro mas valioso deber y
de mantener al empleado, su bienes-
tar y su paz mental como nuestro
primer interns. Nuestra filosofia es
hacer todo lo humanamenteposible
en beneficio del empleado, aunque

trabajo el empleado no siempre
puede ver esto".
Salvo por los tires afios que sirvi6
en la Armada, participando en las


operaciones anfibias en el Pacifico
durante la Segunda Guerra Mun-
dial, Jeffrey pas6 la mayor parte de
su carrera Federal en la Zona del
Canal. Lleg6 aqui en 1952 y fue pro-
fesor de historic e ingl6s en la Es-
cuela Secundaria de Balboa durante
cuatro afios. Se traslad6 de esta
posici6n a una en la Direcci6n de
Personal; luego se cambi6 a la Ofi-
cina del Secretario Ejecutivo, donde

interesante como la vida permit
que la generaci6n joven alcance a la
vieja, Jeffrey ha visto a dos de sus
alumnos de la escuela secundaria,
Fred Cotton y Bruce Quinn, unirse

administrative del Gobernador.
Fue durante su permanencia en la
Direcci6n de Personal que Jeffrey


recibi6 una oportunidad que dice

ra. Fue enviado a Washington,
D. C., por seis meses para participar
en un program de Administraci6n
para Internos del Servicio Civil.
Durante ese period trabaj6 en la
Casa Blanca, el Departamento de
Estado y la Fuerza Aerea.
Mas tarde el director del progra-
ma escribi6 una carta al Director de'
Personal de la Compafiia del Canal
de Panama eh la cual solicitaba que
se encomiara a Jeffrey por su de-
sempefio sobresaliente en todas las
Areas del adiestramiento. En su
carta el director destac6 su eficacia
en la comunicaci6n, su habilidad
para tratar con la gente, y la gran
imaginaci6n con la cual se enfrent6
a los problems. Concluy6 el direc-
tor, "El Sr. Jeffrey cuenta.con una .
fortune en talehto y potential que le
sera provechoso en la bisqueda y en
el logro de las metas de su carrera".
Pero para un hombre que ha lle-
gado hasta la cima manteni6ndose
inmerso en el trabajo rutinario de su
oficina, Jeffrey es un caso excepcio-
nal ya que le gusta estar al aire libre.
Es miembro vitalicio de la Asocia-
ci6n Nacional de Tiro y es un tira-
for expert, pero tira s6lo al blanco.
Ha recorrido todo el Istmo de Pana-

ASUNTO FAMILIAR-Los miembros de la familiar
de Edward Dolan muestran Ilenos de orgullo sus reci6n
adquiridos certificados de ciudadania estadounidense.
De izquierda a derecha aparecen Bonnie Dolan, Karen,
Timothy, Edward Dolan y Edward Jr. Los certificados
fueron presentados por William T. Jarmon, atras a la
derecha, asistente del director distritorial de la Oficina
de Inmigraci6n y Naturalizaci6n en San Antonio.
Durante las dos semanas de audiencias que se efectua-


ron el mes pasado en el Istmo, los funcionarios de
Inmigraci6n y Naturalizaci6n atendieron 405 casos
de ciudadania en la Zona del Canal durante el mes de
abril, elevando a 5,935 el ntimero de certificados otor-
gados en la Zona del Canal desde que comenz6 el
program en 1966. Se siguen aceptando las solicitudes
para certificados en las oficinas de Aduanas en Balboa
y Crist6bal.

del Centro Universitario del Canal
de Panami de la Universidad Esta-
tal de Florida empe/ari el 19 de
mayo y terminarA el 14 de julio. Se

Proclaman Mayo 11 Como el Dia de las Enfermeras


El Gobernador H. R. Parfitt ha
proclamado el dia de hoy, 11 de
mayo, Dia de las Enfermeras en la
Zona del Canal, en reconocimiento
al.papel que han desempefiado las
enfermeras en el Istmo desde 1904
cuando la enfermera Mary Eugenie
Hibbard se convirti6 en la primera
mujer contratada por la Comisi6n
del Canal Istmico.
En su proclama, el Gobernador
design el dia "como tribute a todos
los miembros de la profesi6n en la
Zona del Canal cuya dedicaci6n a
la tarea de velar por la salud de los
ciudadanos esti acorde con las mis
altas tradiciones de la profesi6n".
Para celebrar el acontecimiento,
hoy se han ofrecido t6s en honor a
las enfermeras de los hospitals
Gorgas y Coco Solo y una asesora
traida de los Estados Unidos ofre-
cera charlas hoy y mariana.
El tema de la celebraci6n de este
afio gira alrededor del papel que
desempefian las enfermeras en las
vidas de los nifios de la Zona del
Canal. Fue escogido en reconoci-
miento al hecho de que la Organiza-
'ci6n de las Naciones Unidas ha de-
clarado el afio 1979 como Aiio In-
ternacional del Nifio para llamar la
atenci6n sobre la situaci6n de los
nifios en todo el mundo y fomentar
su bienestar, proteger sus derechos
humans, situaci6n legal y desarro-
llar su identidad cultural.
Las enfermeras de la Zona del
Canal utilizan su talent y adiestra-
miento tanto professional como vo-
luntariamente para beneficio de los
nifios en todas las areas de la vida
comunal..Por ejemplo:
-La enfermera en pediatria
Olly Tonk de la Clinica para Infan-
tes del Centro de Salud Comunal de
Balboa cuidadosamente supervise
el desarrollo de los nifios del sector
Pacifico desde que nacen hasta que
cumplen los cinco afios de edad,
proporcionindoles las inmuniza-
ciones necesarias y orientando las
madres sobre su cuidado. Tambi6n
visit a los nifios enfermos de la
Clinica de Pediatria dos veces a la
semana y ofrece classes sobre el cui-
dado del reci6n nacido en la sala de
obstetricia del Hospital Gorgas.

Guias. Ha sido dirigente de tropa y
de cadets, y actualmente es la coor-
dinadora de adiestramiento y se-
gunda vicepresidenta del Consejo
de Muchachas Gufas de laZona del
Canal. Ha pasado un verano como
enfermera de campamento y ha lle-
vado a las cadetes y a las Mucha-
chas Guias mayores en excursions
de subsistencia por cinco dias a las
S, Islas San Blas.
-La enfermera de ortopedia,
Trinie Nabarrete, dedica sus horas
libres a trabajar con los niflos ins-
critos en el Programa de Educaci6n
Especial de la Escuela Primaria del
Fuerte Clayton. Sus esfuerzos estfin
encaminados a ayudar a estos nifios
excepcionales a desarrollar su mfi-
ximo potential fisico y mental.
-Marian.Gregg ha pasado
28 afios de su vida como enfermera
pediatrica en los hospitals de
Col6n y Coco Solo. Cuida de nifios
de todas las edades en una sala de
14 camas.' Sus responsabilidades

Estudiantes de la Escuela Primaria de Balboa ensefian con sus deditos la
posici6n correct de la letra "E" en los moments que la enfermera Sarah
Weaver les hace el examen annual de la vista. La enfermera Weaver recibe
ayuda de su amiga Margot Howell, quien sostiene la tarjeta para Corey
Forte, Scott Hartmann y Janice Reinhardt.


-Sarah Weaver, enfermera de
la Escuela Primaria de Balboa dia-
riamente atiende las heridas y en-
fermedades leves del alumnado y el
cuerpo docente, imparte exdmenes
de audio y fisicos y de la vista y hace
pruebas cutfneas de tuberculosis a
todos los estudiantes en el curso del
afio escolar. Tambidn funge como
confidence y consejera de los nifios
a su cuidado. Da lecciones de higie-
ne en los salones cuando se lo piden
y presta ayuda en los exfmenes
dentales anuales.


-Ademas de sus responsabi-
lidades cotidianas, la enfermera de
salud public Jo \ileand dedlca
tiempo adicional al Comit6 Conjun-
to contia el Abuso y Descuido de
los Nifios. Discute los casos con los
trabajadores sociales y participa en
discusiones sobre el m6todo de tra-
tamiento que se debe recomendar.

-Jackie June es la-asistente de
la director de enfermeria del Cen-
tro de Salud Mental de la Zona del
Canal, pero despu6s de horas labo-


van desde alimentar, bafiar, cam-
biar y contentar a los recien nacidos
hasta administrar medicamento e
inyecciones, observer el progress
de los nifios convalecientes de ciru-
gia o enfermedad y ser simplemente
una amiga para una criatura enfer-
ma que necesita alguien que se
interest por ella.
-Sharon DeStaffino desem-
pefia un double papel: uno como en-
fermera del Hospital de Palo Seco y
otro como encargada de la Tropa 21
de los Nifios Exploradores de Bal-
boa. Ayuda a los nifios de ocho y
nueve afios a obtener sus insignias y
a confeccionar trabajos artisticos y
manualidades, y los Ileva en excur-
siones y paseos campestres.
Estas enfermeras representan a
muchas mas que ofrecen su tiempo
y talent para asegurar que los ni-
fios de la Zona del Canal obtengan
el mayor bienestar fisico, emotional
y mental no s6lo durante este Aiio
International del Niiio sino todos
los dias de todos los afios.

CONSIDERANDO que la profesi6n de enfermeria ha desempefiado un
papel important en el Istmo desde que los Estados Unidos por primera
vez emprendieron la gran hazafia de construir el Canal de Panama
en 1904; y
CONSIDERANDO que la primera mujer que fue empleada por la
Comisi6n del Canal del Istmo de Panama, fue una enfermera, Mary
Eugenie Hibbard, un mes despu6s que se trasladaron los bienes de los
franceses al Gobierno de los Estados Unidos; y
CONSIDERANDO que por casi 75 afios las enfermeras han sido parte
integral y vital en los servicios de salud brindados a los residents de la
Zona del Canal;
POR CUANTO, YO, HAROLD R. PARFITT, Gobernador de la
Zona del Canal, proclamo el viernes 11 de mayo de 1979 como Dia de las
Enfermeras como tribute a todos los miembros de la profesi6n en laZona
del Canal cuya dedicaci6n a la tarea de velar por las necesidades de salud
de los ciudadanos esta acorde con las mds altas tradiciones de dicha

papel de rey en la prpducci6n mu-
sical de verano de la Senda Unida,
El Rey y Yo, segin anuncio hecho
por el productor y director de la
obra, Bruce Quinn.
Esta es la tercera vez que Arias
desempefia un papel en una produc-
ci6n dela Senda Unida. Particip6
en la version de 1965 de El Rey y Yo
y protagoniz6 a Teyve en Violinista
en el Tejado.
Arias ha aparecido en 33 produc-
clones teatrales y tres peliculas. En
Panama hizo el papel del Rey Enri-
que IV en la producci6n de Becket
del Theatre Guild; de Gustavo en la
producci6n del Teatro en Circulo de
Las Tres Perfectas Casadas; de
Lattimore en la. producci6n del
Guild de Camino Dover; y de Cer-
vantes/Don Quijote en la produc-
ci6n del Departamento de Artes
Experimentales de la Universidad
de Panama del Hombre de La
Mancha, ademfs de aparecer en
otras producciones.
Tambien ha dirigido y escrito
varias obras teatrales, incluyendo
su obra El Sacristin, que fue
publicada.
Mientras estudiaba en la Unive?-
sidad Stanford, Arias pas6 una
prueba cinematografica en los Estu-
dios de la Warner Brothers que le
permiti6 actuar en una pelicula.


Al graduarse, apareci6 en dos pe-
liculas de la Metro Goldwyn Mayer
y actu6 profesionalmente en el
teatro en el papel de Kublai Khan en
Los Millones de Marco; de Max.en
Margen de Error; de Krogstad ep
Casa de Mufiecas, entire otros.
El Rey y Yo se estrenarA en el
Auditorio de la Escuela Secundaria
de Balboa el 26 dejulio y se presen-

Cuando Jeffrey, su esposa Janet,
e hija Jan regresen a los Estados
Unidos, Jeffrey dice que piensa

ganizaci6n sumamente eficiente que
es administrada por hombres de
negocio la cual ha salvado miles
de areas en los Estados Unidos de la
ruina ecol6gica. Se presiente que a
Jeffrey le impacienta la ret6rica de
los experts en ambiente, pero le
atraen las personas que act6an.
La familiar Jeffrey fijard su resi-
dencia en Bisbee, Arizona, un anti-
guo pueblo minero al sureste de
Tucson. El abuelo de Jeffrey, pa-
triarca de la familiar, era un gal6s
que 'viaj6 al oeste en la d6cada de
1870 a la edad de 17 afios y fue capa-
taz minero pionero en Bisbee.
Jeffrey escribi6 una tesis sobre
Douglas, Arizona, y obtuvo su
maestria de la Universidad de Ari-
zona. Dice que en Bisbee continua-
rA sus investigaciones sobre la histo-
ria del estado, y realizarA activida-
des que lo mantendran al aire libre.


La Compafifa de Danzas Nikolais regresa a Panama el 16 y 17 de mayo
para presentar dos funciones en el Teatro Nacional. Alwin Nikolais,
director del grupo, ha creado una forma de danza distintiva, notable por
su uso imaginative de movimiento, iluminaci6n, color y sonido. Su creati-

Estados Unidos celebrara el Dia de
las Fuerzas Armadas 1979 con ob-
servancias en la Estaci6n Albrook
de la Fuerza A6rea y en el Estadio
"Tiger" de la Escuela Secundaria de
Crist6bal el sabado 19 de mayo. Se
invita al ptblico a ambos events.
El tema para el traditional Dia de
las Fuerzas Armadas sera "Fuerzas
Para la Paz". En Albrook y la Es-
cuela Secundaria de Crist6bal, los
components del Comando Sur ten-
dran en exhibici6n aeronaves, ve-
hiculos y equipo tactico usados en el
cumplimiento de su misi6n, la de-
fensa del Canal de Panama.
En Albrook las exhibiciones abri-
ran a las 8:30 a.m. y los visitantes
que acudan a la base encontrarAn en
exhibici6n una colecci6n interesan-
te de equipo military. Se podran ver
vehiculos blindados de transport
de personal y otros vehiculos tActi-
