Voluntary Contributions to Community


Recognized by Public Service Awards


The Panama Canal paid tribute
last Monday to 21 individuals and
organizations who have made out-
standing voluntary contributions to
the Isthmian community.
It was the Ninth Annual Panama
Canal Honorary Public Service
Awards ceremony held in the
rotunda of the Administration
Building where members of the
civilian and military community
received official recognition and
commendation for their dedication
to service improving the community.
Gold medallions and certificates
were presented to four, silver to
five, and bronze to 12 persons and
organizations.
The Panama Canal Public Serv-
ice Award was established in 1970
to encourage and recognize Isth-
mian residents, including employ-
ees, and organizations for assisting
the Canal organization in accom-
plishing its mission.
Nominations are requested each
year from Panama Canal top man-
agement, the Armed Forces, civic,

labor, fraternal, religious groups
and other Federal agencies in the
Canal Zone. Nominations are then
reviewed by the Incentive Awards
Committee and the recipients are
named by the Canal Zone Governor.
The award is in the form of a cer-
tificate which carries the photo-
graph of the incumbent President
of the United States and the
Governor. of the Canal Zone, ac-
companied by a gold, silver or
bronze medallion.
The design for the medallion was
taken from the plaque honoring
Col. David D. Gaillard that is set in
the face of Contractor Hill. The
adoption of the design for the
medallions was done by Frank
Kwai Ben, an architect in the Engi-
neering Division's Architectural
Branch. Each medallion is accom-
panied by a small replica for wear-
ing in a lapel or a dress.

Swim-A-Thon To Be Held at Balboa Pool


Approximately 25 local children
will swim for fun, health and a
worthwhile cause on May 8. Swim-
mers in the Club Internacional de
Nataci6n (CIN) will participate in.
their seventh Swim-A-Thon to raise
money for team travel and to
support the International Swim-
ming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauder-
dale, Florida.

The Swim-A-Thon, which is
sponsored by the Swimming Hall of
Fame, is an annual event in which
children (or adults) swim as far as


they can and local neighbors, rela-
tives, merchants, and other civic-
minded citizens pledge to donate
anywhere from a penny to fifty
cents per 25-yard pool length that
the participant can swim. The
money is divided between the CIN
Travel Fund and the Swimming
Hall of Fame. Persons who desire
to support this activity may pledge
donations to any CIN swimmer
and, in addition, may join the fun
and swim some laps too. The event
will start at 4:30 p.m. at Balboa
Swimming Pool.

Seeley gave a history of the
award and was then followed by
Executive Secretary J. Patrick
Conley who presented the bronze
awards, Lt. Gov. James H. Tormey
presented the silver awards, and
Gov. H. R. Parfitt presented the
gold awards.
He remarked that he had been
fortunate to have taken part in five
of the nine award ceremonies and
said it gave him great pleasure to
see 21 members of the Isthmian
community honored. He noted that
they are from a wide spectrum of
occupations and community in-
terests and activities, yet they have
one thing in common. When help
was needed, they gave willingly and
generously of their time and talent.
Expressing his congratulations to
the recipients, he said, "People who
are willing to devote themselves to
build a better community deserve
our highest honor and praise."
The first gold award went to Jean
D. Burns, chief of the Specifications
and Estimates Branch, who for the
benefit of thousands of children on
the Isthmus, has the past six Christ-
mas seasons visited hospitals, schools,
churches, orphanages, nurseries
and community centers, using his
vacation time and money for trans-
portation, gifts, candy and costumes
to bring happiness to the com-
munity. Doris Burns accepted the
award for her husband.
The second gold award was pre-
sented to S. Sgt. Luis A. Cordero,
USAF, who was cited.for his volun-
tary work with church groups, cub
scouts, orphanages, the Red Cross,
boy's baseball league and other
community activities, including as-
sistance to couples in adopting
children.
The third gold award was pre-
sented to the Elks Panama Canal
Lodge 1414, Balboa for its 53 years
of dedicated service to the Isthmian
community, and especially for its
public service projects such as the
youth activities program, the schol-
arship program, the social and com-
munity welfare program and the
Elks Club Activities Program. In
addition to sports activities, the
Elks have provided yearly scholar-
ships for several years to deserving
young men and women including
blind students. For the past 17
years, they have held Christmas
parties for the blind and retarded
children of the Helen Keller School
in Panama and have sponsored
many other activities which have
greatly contributed to the social
welfare of the community.
The fourth gold award went to
Mrs. Charlotte B. Kennedy, for
her extensive involvement with her
fellowman, She was cited for her
service to the Cristobal-Margarita-
Brazos Heights Civic Council, the
Atlantic Roller Rink Committee,
and her many activities with the
Canal Zone Chapter of the Amer-

Jointly Plan Future Utilities Service


This is the ninth in a series of
reports on the progress of the
binational subcommittees prepar-
ing for the implementation of the
Panama Canal treaties on Oc-
tober 1, 1979.
The Power and Communications
subcommittees have been meeting
since last October to prepare for
the implementation of the Panama
Canal Treaty. Working groups were
established with members of the
Panama Canal Company Electrical
Division, the Panamanian electrical
utility (IRHE) and the Panamanian
telephone utility (INTEL). These
groups have been meeting regularly
to make detailed plans for power
and telephone services in those
areas transferred to Panama and in
Commission operating and housing
areas. Much of the work involves
field inspections of utility facilities
by PCC, INTEL, and IRHE per-
sonnel working together through-
out the Canal Zone.


Residents are naturally con-
cerned about the nature of the
changes coming after October 1.
The townsites of Paraiso, Pedro
Miguel, and Rainbow City will not
be Panama Canal Commission
housing areas and therefore must be
served under the auspices of the
utilities agencies of Panama. U.S.-
citizen employees of the Panama
Canal Commission living in Com-
mission housing areas as well as
former Company/Government em-
ployees transferred to DOD. and
who remain in Commission housing
will continue to receive utility
services as they do today at rates set
by the Commission.

Future details concerning rates
and customer status will be pub-
lished as soon as they are available.
In the meantime, residents will con-
tinue to see activity by the joint
working groups in housing areas
as their planning efforts proceed.


Robert D. Donaldson, chief of
the Mechanical Branch of the Engi-
neering Division, has been pro-
moted to assistant chief of the divi-
sion where he began his Canal
career 25 years ago. He succeeds
G. A. O'Connell, who has retired
following 37 years of Canal service.
A registered professional 'en-
gineer, Donaldson is a native of
Anoka, Minn. He received a
bachelor's degree in mechanical en-
gineering from the University of
Minnesota in 1942 and a master's
degree in mechanical engineering in
1946 from Stevens Institute of
Technology in Hoboken, N.J.

Robert D. Donaldson
Before joining the Canal in 1954,
Donaldson was employed for five
years as a structural engineer with
the Curtis Propeller Co. of New
Jersey. He also served as an instruc-
tor at the University of Minnesota
and worked as a machine designer
for Honeywell in Minneapolis.
In 1960, when he was with the


Special Studies Branch of the divi-
sion, he was appointed resident
inspector for the Panama Canal in
Japan during the construction of.
the new towing locomotives that
were to replace the original locomo-
tives on the Canal. His special
assignment was to be for two years
but was extended to four years.
During this aqsignment, Dpnaldson
was responsible for arthngiifg a
comprehensive schedule for all
aspects of the production of the
many diverse parts of the new loco-
motives and supervised, coordi-
nated and planned the locomotive
tests.
Donaldson returned to Japan for
a year in 1977, when he was named
the on-site coordinattf fo- the coni-
struction of eight new locomotives
and component parts that were con-
structed in different cities in Japan.
The $7 million contract was the
largest dollar procurement contract
in recent Canal history.
An avid stamp collector, Donald-
son has been collecting stamps from
all over the world since he was a
youngster. It is his favorite pastime
and takes up most of his off-duty
hours. Most of his lunch hours in
the past 25 years have been devoted
to his stamp collection which con-
tains more than 100,000 specimens,
most of which are stored in the
United States to avoid humidity
problems.
Donaldson's wife Elaine is super-
visor of the typing pool in the
Accounting Division. Donaldson's
two sons, Robert and John, are
working in California, and daugh-
ter Rae Hannigan is a teacher at
Fort Kobbe Elementary School.

Heights Officers' Club.

youths 'and adults to become better
citizens;

Isthmian community, serving as
organist at various churches and
chapels and as a founder of the
Isthmian Chapter of the:American
Guild of Organists: She has been a
member and past president of the
Interamerican Women's Club for
30 years and has been active in the
Isthmian College Club, the Panama
Soroptimist Club and participated
in the first seminar for women
leaders of Central America on
"Women's Potential in Latin Amer-
ican Countries." Mrs. Kirkland has
given many hours to welfare pro-
grams in the Canal Zone and
Panama.
The U.S. Army Thrift Shop.for
its outstanding service to the Pacific.
side community by using proceeds
from reselling used merchandise to
support many community projects.
The shop has donated more than
$500 to needy families and to the
Palo Seco Hospital and about
$6,000 to Army Community Serv-
ice/Army Emergency Relief, the
American Legion Baseball team,
Special Education Programs and
other organizations. The shop also
donated $10,000 for the construc-
tion of two bohios at Fort Clayton
Swimming Pool and also sponsors
scholarships for Canal Zone students.

Andrew B. Barna, for his con-
tributions to the Atlantic side com-
munity where he has donated
countless hours serving in activi-
ties of the Holy Family Church,
the Margarita Recreational As-
sociation, in sports, and civic
organizations;
Capt. Kenneth L. Bivin,'for his
benevolence and his sincere and
continues concern for the public
welfare, especially as blood donor,
averaging one .contribution every
11 weeks for the past 7 years;
Mrs. Hilda Butcher, for her many
years of dedicated service.as a Sun-
day school teacher and her par-
ticipation as an instructor in the
Summer Recreation Program, and
her service to the International Girl
Scouts, Ciudad del Nifio in La
Chorrera and other volunteer serv-
ice in Panama;
The Canal Zone Junior Reserve
Officer's Training Corps, for its
many years of service to the Isth-
mian community assisting and par-
ticipating in many activities spon-
sored by local fraternal and civic
organizations. The corps also pro-
vides color guard details for many
official ceremonies and also con-
ducts drives to collect clothing,
toys and food for needy children
at Christmas time;
Fred A. Cotton, for his many


contributions to the Isthmian com-
munity during the past 12 years,
especially to the youth of the Pacific
Baseball Little League and other
sports leagues: He was recognized
also for his church activities and his
active participation in numerous
other community organizations;
Sylvia Goldmann, for her interest
in the welfare of the people in the
Isthmian community, serving as a
volunteer at the Fort Gulick Dis-
pensary and Coco Solo Teen Club;
organizing drives to benefit needy
families; working with the scouting
program, counseling women re-
covering from cancer surgery and
numerous other humanitarian ac-
tivities;
John R. Gough Sr., for his many
outstanding contributions over the
years to civic and church activities
on the Isthmus. Opening his home
to neighborhood children and to
his Sunday school students, Gough
has taught them how to build small
radio sets. He has collected and
shared his fossils, minerals and sea-
shells with the .Chicago Field
Museum, the Puerto Rico'Museum
and Canal Zone Museum and
shared his collection of artifacts
with the 193d Infantry Brigade and
has participated actively in nu-
merous fraternal and civic or-
ganizations;
Andrew J. Meyers, for his deep

gram in the Canal Zone where he
has served as assistant cubmaster,
cubinaster, assistant scoutmaster
and military liaison officer for the
Canal Zone contingent to the 1974

for its invaluable service to the
Canal Zone military and civilian
communities through its public
service contributions in the enter-
tainment and information field;
USAFSO Rescue Coordination
Center for its professional and
dedicated efforts in coordinating all
military and civilian search and
rescue efforts for the United States
Southern Command and its area of
responsibility. The center has as-
sisted more than 200 United States
and Panamanian citizens whose
health and, in some cases, lives were
endangered due to auto accidents,
boating incidents and various med-
ical problems;
Mrs. Frances West, for her exten-
sive involvement in the Canal Zone
community as a.member of the
Army Community Services, devot-
ing more than 2,500 hours of her
time to community projects, par-
ticipating in or directing welcome
committees, family affairs and
other civic programs.

Six Cristobal High School students initiated into the Caribbean Chapter
of the National Honor Society during its spring initiation on April 24 are,

welcomed students, parents and guests to the ceremonies, Col. Charles
R. Clark, director, Transportation and Terminals Bureau, was the guest
speaker, and N.H.S. members Lee Swearingen, Kathy Kredell, Leanne
Mans and Egberto Willies spoke on the four criteria of membership:
scholarship, leadership, service.and character.


Choose a career carefully, Gov. H. R. Parfitt, told Balboa High School
students during his opening remarks at the school's third annual series
of career talks. He encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunity
to hear experts from the wide variety of occupations represented in the
Canal Zone. Sharing the first day's program with the Governor were
Robert Morrison who spoke on chemical engineering and Roberto
Guardia on civil engineering. Career talks on environmental control,
business, public service, transportation, health, communications,
manufacturing, hospitality, journalism and military service were given
during the two-week program.

meeting featuring guest speakers

Reconocen Aportes a -la Comunidad


Con Premios por Servicio Publico


El lunes pasado el Canal de
Panama rindi6 tribute a 21 perso-
nas y entidades que han hecho exce-
lentes contribuciones voluntarias a
la comunidad istmefia.
Esta fue la Novena Ceremonia
Anual de Premios por Servicios
P6blicos que tuvo lugar en la
Rotonda del Edificio de Adminis-
traci6n donde los miembros de la
comunidad civil y military recibieron
reconocimiento y encomio official
por su dedicaci6n para realizar
obras y servicios para mejorar la
comunidad.
Cada una de las 21 personas y
entidades recibi6 un certificado
junto con un medall6n de oro, plata
y bronce. En total, se entregaron
cuatro de oro, cinco de plata y 12 de
bronce.
El premio fue establecido en 1970
con el objeto de alentar y dar reco-
nocimiento a los residents istme-
fios, incluyendo empleados, y a las
entidades por haber ayudado a la
organizaci6n del Canal a cumplir
su misi6n.
Cada afio se solicitan nombres de
candidates para los premios a la
administraci6n del Canal de Pana-
ma, a las Fuerzas Armadas, a gru-
pos civicos, laborales, fraternales,
religiosos y a otras agencies del


Gobierno Federal en la Zona del
Canal. Las nominaciones son exa-
minadas por el Comit6 de Premios
por Incentivo y los premiados son
anunciados por el Gobernador de la
Zona del Canal.
El premio es un certificado que
incluye fotografias del actual Presi-
dente de los Estados Unidos y del
Gobernador de la Zona del Canal,
acompafiado poryun medall6n de
oro, plata o bronce.
El disefio del medall6n fue toma-
do de la placa confeccionada en
honor del Coronel David D.
Gaillard que esta colocada en la'
parte frontal del Cerro del Contra-
tista. La copia del disefio para el
medall6n fue hecha por Frank Kwai
Ben, arquitecto en el Ramo de Ar-
quitectura de la Divisi6n de Inge-
nieria. Cada medall6n va acompa-
fiado de una replica pequefia para
usarse en la solapa o en el vestido.

Marat6n de Nataci6n en la Piscina de Balboa


El 8 de mayo aproximadamente
25 nifios de la localidad nadaran por
placer, por salud y por una causa
que vale la pena. Los nadadores del
Club Internacional de Nataci6n (CIN)
participaran en su s6ptima Marat6n
de Nataci6n (Swim-A-Thon) con el
objeto de recaudar fondos para su-
fragar los gastos para viajes del
equipo y para apoyar el Sal6n de la
Fama de Nadadores Internaciona-
les en Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
La Marat6n de Nataci6n, la cual
es patrocinada por el Sal6n de la
Fama de Nadadores, es un event
annual en el cual nifios o adults


nadan hasta donde pueden y veci-
nos de la localidad, familiares, co-
merciantes, y otros ciudadanos con
interns civico prometendonardesde
un centavo hasta cincuenta centa-
vos por cada 25 yards que naden
los participants. El dinero es divi-
dido entire el Fondo para Viajes del
CIN y el Sal6n de la Fama de Nada-
dores. Las personas que deseen apo-
yar esta actividad pueden promoter
donaciones a cualquier nadador
CIN y, ademas, pueden participar
en el event y nadar unas vueltas
tambi6n. El event comenzara a las
4:30 p.m. en la Piscina de Balboa.

Hizo la observaci6n de que tenia
el honor de haber participado en
cinco de las nueve ceremonies de
presentaci6n de premios y dijo que
le daba un gran placer ver a 21
miembros de la comunidad istmefia
recibiendo honors. Seiial6 que
aunque variaban en sus ocupacio-
nes y en sus actividades e intereses
dentro de las comunidades, tenian
una cosa en comfn: que cuando se
necesitaba su ayuda, daban gusto-
sa y generosamente de su tiempo y
su talent. Felicit6 a los recipients
dici6ndoles: "La gente que esta dis-
puesta a dedicarse a former una
mejor comunidad merece nuestro
mayor reconocimiento y nuestras
alabanzas".
El primer premio de oro fue
entregado a Jean D. Burns, Jefe del
Ramo de Especificaciones y Esti-
mados, quien, en beneficio de los
miles de nifios en el Istmo, durante
las iltimas seis navidades ha visi-
tado hospitals, escuelas, iglesias,
orfanatos, guarderias y centros co-
munales, usando sus vacaciones y
su dinero para llevar felicidad a la
comunidad. Doris Burns acept6 el
premio en nombre de su esposo.
El segundo premio de oro fue
presentado al Sgto. de 2a: Clase
Luis A. Cordero, de la Fuerza
Area de los Estados Unidos, quien
fue citado por su servicio voluntario
con grupos religiosos, los lobatos de
los exploradores, orfanatos, la Cruz
Roja, la liga de b6isbol infantil y
otras actividades de la comunidad,
incluyendo asistencia a parejas en
la adopci6n de nifios.
El tercer premio de oro fue otor-
gado a la Logia Elks 1414 del Canal
de Panama, Balboa, por sus 53 affos
de servicio en pro de la comlinidad
istmefia, y especialmente por sus
proyectos de servicio pfblico tales
como program de actividades para
j6venes, el program de beca, el
program de bienestar social de la
comunidad y el Programa de Acti-
vidades del Club Elks. Ademas de
sus actividades deportivas, los Elks
han otorgado becas anualmente por
varies afios a j6venes que las mere-
cen, incluyendo estudiantes ciegos.
Durante los iltimos 17 afios, han
celebrado fiestas Navidefias para
los nifios ciegos y retrasados de la
Escuela Helen Keller en Panama y
han patrocinado muchas otras ac-
tividades que han contribuido gran-
demente al bieriestar social de la
comunidad.
El cuarto premio de oro fue pre-
sentado a la Sra. Charlotte B.
Kennedy por su dedicaci6n a su
pr6jimo. Fue citada por su servicio
al Consejo Civico Crist6bal-Marga-
rita-Brazos' Heights, el Comit6 de la
Pista de Patinaje del sector Atlin-
tico, y sus muchas actividades con
el Capitulo de la Zona del Canal de
la Cruz Roja Americana, donde ha
adiestrado a cientos de personas en
primeros auxilios, en respiraci6n
artificial y en el uso de resucitaci6n
cardio-pulmonar, todo en forma
voluntaria. La Sra. Kennedy tam-
bi6n trabaj6 desde la Zona del
Canal dando socorro a las victims
del terremoto en Managua; trabaj6
con la Agencia Nacional de Socorro
en Desastre en Louisiana durante

Este es el noveno en una series de
articulos sobre el progress de las
suhbomisiones binacionales que se
preparan para la ejecucidn de los
Tratados del Canal de Panamd el
19 de octubre de 1979.

Las subcomisiones de Electrici-
dad y Comunicaciones se han esta-
do reuniendo desde el pasado octu-
bre en preparaci6n para la ejecuci6n
del Tratado del Canal de Panama.
Se establecieron grupos de traba-
jo integrados por miembros de la
Division de Electricidad de la Com-
pafiia del Canal de Panama, del
IRHE y del INTEL. Estos grupos
se han estado reuniendo con regula-
ridad para detallar planes para brin-
dar servicio de electricidad y tel6-
fono en esas areas que seran trans-
feridas a Panama y en las areas de
operaci6n y vivienda de la Comi-
si6n. Gran parte del trabajo com-
prende inspecciones de las instala-
ciones que el personal de la Compa-
ilia, el INTEL y el IRHE efectfan
conjuntamente a trav6s de la Zona
del Canal.


Los residents estdn preocupados
por los cambios que se producirAn a
partir del 1� de octubre. Los pobla-
dos de Paraiso, Pedro Miguel y
Rainbow City no formaran parte de
la Comisi6n del Canal de Panama
y, por consiguiente, recibirdn servi-
cio de las instituciones panamefias
correspondientes. Los empleados
estadounidenses de la Comisi6n del
Canal de Panama que continden
residiendo en dreas de vivienda de
la Comisi6n, al igual que los ex-
empleados de la Compafila y
Gobierno transferidos al Departa-
mento de Defensa pero que conti-
nlian residiendo en viviendas bajo
control de la Comisi6n, seguiran
recibiendo el servicio acostumbra-
do seg6n las tarifas que fije la
Comisi6n.
Tan pronto como est6 disponible,
se publicard mas informaci6n relati-
va a las tarifas y el servicio a los
clients. Entretanto, los residents
seguiran notando la labor conjunta
de los grupos de trabajo en las areas
residenciales durante esta fase de
preparation.

hasta hace unos meses fue el ma-

Brown ha sido orador principal en
muchos events civicos y culturales,
ha promovido el deported y ha dado
generosamente de su tiempo en el
asesoramiento de j6venes y adults
descarriados para que sean mejores
ciudadanos.
Al Sr. Phillip A. Henry, por su
profundo interns por el bienestar de

Unidos, por su servicio sobresalien-
te a la comunidad del sector Paci-
fico mediante el uso de las utilidades
de la venta.de mercancia usada para
apoyar nuchos de los proyeclos de
la comunidad. El almac6n ha dona-
do mas de $500 a families necesita-
das y al Hospital de Palo Seco, y
aproximadamente $6,000 al Servi-
cio Comunal del Ej6rcito/Fondo
del Ej6rcito para Socorro en Emer-
gencia, al equipo de b6isbol de la
Legi6n Americana,, Programas de
Educaci6n Especial ' otra organi-
zaciones. El almac6n tambi6n ha
donado $10,000 para la construc-
ci6n de dos bohios en la Piscina del
Fuerte Clayton y tambi6n ofrece
becas a estudiantes de la Zona del
Canal.

El Cuerpo de Adiestramiento
para Oficiales de Reserva Junior
de la Zona del Canal, por sus mu-
chos afios de servicio a la comuni-
dad istmefia, apoyando y partici-
pando en muchas actividades patro-
cinadas por organizaciones frater-
nales y civicas de la localidad. El
cuerpo tambi6n provee guardia de
honor para muchas ceremonies ofi-
ciales y tambi6n Ileva a cabo cam-
pafias para recolectar ropa,juguetes
y alimentos para nifios necesitados
durante la poca Navidefia.
Fred A. Cotton, por sus muchas
contribuciones a la comunidad ist-
mefia durante los ltimos 12 afios,
especialmente a la juventud de la
Liga Infantil de B6isbol del Paci-
fico y otras ligas deportivas. Tam-


bi6n recibi6 reconocimiento por sus
actividades religiosas y su participa-
ci6n active en otras numerosas
organizaciones comunales.
Sylvia Goldmann, por su interns
en el bienestar de los habitantes de
la comunidad istmefia, por servir
como voluntaria en el Dispensario
del Fuerte Gulick y el Club de Ado-
lescentes de Coco Solo; por haber
organizado campafias en beneficio
de families necesitadas, por trabajar
en el program de escultismo, por
asesorar a las sefioras que se recu-
peran de operaciones por cancer, y
por otras actividades humanitarias.
John R. Gough Sr., por sus mu-
chas descollantes contribuciones a
actividades civicas y religiosas en el
Istmo. Gough recibia en su hogar
a nifios de la vecindad y a sus estu-
diantes de la escuela dominical de
iglesia, y les ensefiaba a construir
pequefios aparatos de radio. Ha co-
leccionado f6siles, minerales y con-
chas y ha compartido sus coleccio-
nes con el Museo de Chicago, el
Museo de Puerto Rico y el Museo
de la Zona del Canal. Comparti6
su colecci6n de artefactos con la
193a. Brigada de Infanteria y ha
participado activamente en nume-
rosas organizaciones fraternales
y civicas.
Andrew J. Meyers, por su plena
participaci6n en el program de
escultismo en la Zona del Canal
donde ha servido como asistente
del organizador de lobatos, orga-
nizador de lobatos, asistente del or-
ganizador de nifios exploradores, y
official de enlace del ej6rcito para el
grupo de la Zona del Canal que
asisti6 al "jamboree" 1974 en el
Parque Estatal:Farragpt en!Idaho..
Durante los iltimos 4 afios ha servi-
do como miembro sin restricciones
en la Junta Ejecutiva de los Nifios
Exploradores de Am6rica en la
Zona del Canal, como asesor laico
para la Asociaci6n Nacional de
Exploradores Eagle y como miem-
bro del Comit6 Scout--O-Rama.
James J. O'Donnell, por sus 20
afios de servicio fielal mejoramien-
to de las condiciones laborales y de
vida en la Zona del Canal, especial-
mente su servicio a los consejos
civicos de Coco Solo, Balboa, Dia-
blo y Los Rios y sus esfuerzos a
favor de los Nifios Exploradores, el
Club de Tiro al Blanco de Balboa,
la Hermandad Internacional de los
Trabajadores de la Electricidad, el
Sindicato Laboral de la Zona del
Canal y la.Federaci6n Americana
de Empleados del Gobierno.
La Red de Radio y Televisi6n del
Comando Sur, por su servicio ines-
timable a las comunidades militares
y civiles de la ZQna del Canal me-
diante sus contribuciones de servi-
cio de informaci6n y entietenimien-
to al p6blico.
El Centro de Coordinaci6n de
Rescate de la Fuerza Aerea del Co-
mando Sur por sus esfuerzos profe-
sionales y fieles en la coordinaci6n
de todos los esfuerzos militares y
civiles de b6squeda y rescate para el
Comando Sur de los Estados
Unidos y su Area de responsabili-
dad. El centro ha asistido a mAs de
200 ciudadanos estadounidenses y
panamefios cuya salud y, en algu-
nos casos vidas estaban en peligro
debido a accidents automovilis-
ticos, incidents de lanchas y otros
problems m6dicos.
Frances West, por su extensa par-
ticipaci6n en la comunidad de la
Zona del Canal como miembro
de los Servicios Comunales del
Ej6rcito, dedicando mis de 2,500
horas de su tiempo a proyectos
comunales, y participando en o diri-
giendo comit6s de bienvenida,
asuntos familiares y otros pro-
gramas civicos.


Los ganadores de los doubles de tenis con que culmination tres meses de
lecciones de tenis patrocinadas por la Oficina de Servicios Recreativos
son, de izquierda a derecha: Abraham Espini, Virginia Shea, Leonora
Richey y Doris Apold. Espini y Richey se levaron el primer lugar y Shea
y Apold el segundo. La Oficina de Servicios Recreativos comenzara una
segunda sesi6n de lecciones de tenis para los empleados de la Compaiiia
y sus dependientes el 11 de junio. Las inscripciones se pueden lograr
Ilamando al 52-2903 o a la Oficina de Servicios Recreativos en el gimnasio
de la Escuela Secundaria de Balboa entire las 4 y 9 p.m. de lunes a viernes
o de 9 a.m. a 4 p.m. los sabados. El cupo es limitado, por lo que se

Los seis estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria de Crist6bal que fueron
admitidos en el Capitulo del Caribe de la Sociedad Nacional de Honores
durante su ceremonia de admisi6n de la primavera el 24 de abril son, de
izquierda a derecha: Tamara Witcher, Laura Loizeaux, Maria Irion,
Denis Healey, Robert Fry y Victor Lau. La president del Capitulo Elva
Moolchan dio la bienvenida a los estudiantes, sus pardr's y Uisfinivitados
a la ceremonia. El Coronel Charles R. Clark, director del Ramo de Trans-
porte y Terminales, fue orador principal. Los miembros de la Sociedad
Lee Swearingen, Kathy Kredell, Leanne Mans y Egberto Willies hablaron
respectivamente sobre los cuatro principios para ser miembro:
dedicaci6n al studio, liderazgo, servicio, y caricter.


"Escojan su carrera cuidadosamente", les dijo el Gobernador H. R. Parfitt
a los estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria de Balboa durante su inter-
venci6n en la tercera series annual de charlas sobre carreras. Les anim6 a
sacarle provecho a la oportunidad de poder escuchar a experts en la
gran variedad de ocupaciones que existen en la Zona del Canal.
Participaron con el Gobernador en el program del primer dia Robert
Morrison, quien habl6 sobre ingenieria quimica, y Roberto Guardia,
sobre ingenieria civil. Durante el program de dos semanas de duraci6n
hubo charlas sobre los siguientes temas: control ambiental, comercio,
servicios piblicos, transport, salubridad, comunicaciones, industrial,
hospitalidad, periodismo, y servicio military.
