U.S. Employees Will Need Passports, Other Documents


U.S.-citizen employees who will
remain with the Panama Canal
Commission, and their dependents,
will need to have certain documents
in their possession on October 1,
1979, thedate of entry into force of
the Panama Canal Treaties and
establishment of the Panama Canal
Commission.
The documents, which will in-
clude passports, entry/exit permits
and identification cards, will be
needed as identification, to prove
eligibility for various treaty rights
and benefits, for access to Depart-
ment of Defense facilities, and for
entry or exit from the territory of
the Republic of Panama.
To assist employees in obtaining
the required documents as easily as
possible, the Administrative Serv-
ices Division, in coordination with
officials of the United States Em-


bassy, Department of Defense, and
the Republic of Panama, has made
plans to gather information now so
that it can be compiled, con-
solidated and verified in time to
have the documents issued before
October I.
Information will be collected
through bureau and division ad-
ministrative officers for the fol-
lowing documents:
Official United States pass-
ports to be issued by the U.S. Em-
bassy to U.S.-citizen employees and
their U.S.-citizen dependents.
Identification cards to be issued
by this agency to all U.S.-citizen
employees of the Commission, and
their dependents, depending on
their eligibility for the various levels
of rights and benefits available in
accordance with the terms of the
Treaty and its related agreements.


Public Service Awards To Be Given Monday


A total of 21 individuals and
groups will be honored at the Pan-
ama Canal's ninth annual Hon-
orary Public Service Awards cer-
emony to be held at 10 a.m., Mon-
day in the rotunda of the Ad-
ministration Building.
To show appreciation for volun-
tary acts and services that have im-

organization in its mission.
Each year nominations for the
awards are requested from Canal
management, the Armed Forces.
civic, labor, fraternal, religious
groups and Federal agencies in the
Canal Zone. Nominations are re-
viewed by the Incentive Awards
committee and the recipients are
then named by the Governor.
The award, established in July
1970. is in the form of a certificate
which features photographs of the
incumbent President of the United
States and the Governor of the
Canal Zone.


Entry/ Exit permits to be issued
by the Republic of Panama to U.S.-
citizen employees of the Com-
mission and their dependents and
to certain skilled, technical or
professional employees who are
nationals of third countries and
their dependents.
Information is also being col-
lected from non-U.S.-citizen em-
ployees who will not be transferred
to the Department of Defense on
October I to facilitate the issuance
of identification cards to these
employees.
This phase of the project deals
only with employees who are ex-
pected to remain with the Panama
Canal Commission after October 1.
The collection of data from Trans-
fer of Function employees will be
addressed at a later date.
Employees will not be charged
for any of these documents.


As of October 1, 1979, Canal
Commission employees and their
dependents who resided in the
former Canal Zone will be required
to register their firearms with the
authorities of the Republic of
Panama. As a part of the planning
effort to implement the new treaty,
the Binational Working Group's
Police Subcommittee (made up of
officials of the Canal Zone Police
and Panama's Guardia Nacional)
has developed a firearms registra-
tion transfer program for persons
who will be employees of the Canal
Commission, and their dependents,
who now reside in the Canal Zone.
This program, which is designed to
facilitate the registration process,
will begin on June I and run through
September 30, 1979. Registration
will become effective on October 1,
1979, and will remain valid for one
year from that date.
To take advantage of the registra-
tion program, owners of firearms,
other than shotguns and inoperable
historical weapons, should take the
following actions:
(a) Fill out an application
(available at the Balboa and Cris-
tobal Police stations) indicating the
make, type, serial number, and
caliber of the firearm as well as its
intended use (e.g., hunting, target
shooting, home protection).
(b) Obtain three I'!, inch
photographs of the owner.
- (c) Bring the completed ap-
plication and photographs together
with the firearms to be registered,
two rounds of ammunition and $5
in cash to the Balboa or Cristobal
Police station.
(d) Panamanian citizens who
now reside in the Canal Zone and
who will be employees of the Canal
Commission will have to provide a
Panama arrest record.
Owners must surrender the fire-
arms and the ammunition to a
Canal Zone Police Officer for
transportation to Panama and com-
pletion of the registration process,

a procedure which takes several
days. The ammunition will be used
for a ballistics examination and,
consequently, cannot be returned.
The Police will notify owners when
their firearms may be picked up at
the Balboa or Cristobal station.
Thereafter, owners will be subject
to a yearly $5 registration renewal
fee, although it will not be necessary
to repeat the full registration pro-
cess. The $5 fee will cover all
weapons listed on the permit.
Shotgun owners and owners of
inoperable historical firearms (e.g.,
weapons from past wars, etc.) must
also follow the foregoing pro-
cedure, except that they do not have
to bring their firearms or ammnuni-
tion to the police station; a com-
pleted application, photographs of
the owner ahd the $5 fee are all that,
are required to register these
weapons. Owners of these historical
firearms bear the individual respon-
sibility for rendering their weapons
inoperable by removing the firing
pin or bolt.
Upon proper registration, Pan-
amanian law authorizes the private
ownership and possession of the
following weapons:
(a) Rifles of any caliber.
(b) Pistols of.22, .25, .32, and
.38 caliber and; by active members
of recognized gun clubs on the
Isthmus, caliber .45, .357, and .44
and 9mm pistols.
(c) Shotguns of 12, 16, 20, 28
and 410 gauge. Possession of auto-
matic weapons as well as grenades
or other war-type explosives is
prohibited in Panama. Rifles larger
than .30 caliber may be used for
target shooting at such clubs but
may not by used for hunting.
Violations of firearms registra-
tion laws in the Republic of Pan-
ama are punishable by confiscation
of the weapon and imposition of a
fine between $10 and $600.
Those individuals who prefer
sending their firearms back to the
United States rather than register-
ing them with Panama may con-
tact the chief, Customs Division, at
52-3238 or Frank Turman at
52-3325 for additional information.

Diablo Road Traffic To Be

Rerouted During Repairs
Starting on May 7, Diablo Road,
between Hains Street in Diablo and
Pier Street in Balboa, will be
blocked to vehicular traffic while
Building 42-D is being reroofed by
contractor's forces. Patrons will be
permitted access to Section I from
the direction of Balboa. Traffic will
be rerouted to Gaillard Highway.
This situation is expected to con-
tinue for a period of two to three
weeks.

The sixth group of cadets from the Panama Nautical
School to undergo training with the Canal organiza-
tion received certificates for their participation in the
4-week program from Captain John D. Thurber,
marine director, at center. The cadets received train-
ing from various units of the Marine and Engineer-
ing and Construction bureaus, with special emphasis

placed on training on board towboats and launches.
The ceremony was held at the Nautical School in
Paitilla. At Captain Thurber's left is Professor Clara
Nimia de Del Vasto, vice minister of education, and
Professor Emilio J. Batista C., acting director of the
Panama Nautical School. Also attending the ceremony
were friends and relatives of the cadets.


Two Students Named Presidential Scholars Finalists


Catherine Ciepiela and Tramel
C. Clark have been named finalists
in the Presidential Scholars Pro-
gram which annually identifies the
most intellectually distinguished
graduating high school seniors in
the nation.
The announcement of the 1,000
outstanding young American stu-
dents to become finalists in the
program from among more than
three million seniors graduating
this year was made by the U.S.
Commissioner of Education and
the Commission on Presidential
Scholars.


Cathy, a Balboa High School
senior, and Tramel, a senior at
Cristobal High School, have been
awarded certificates by the Pres-
ident's Commission on Presidential
Scholars. The selection of finalists
who will become Presidential Scholars
will be made by members of the
Commission this month. It will be
based on many factors in addition
to academic excellence, such as
achievement in the performing arts,
a demonstrated ability in leader-
ship, contribution of energy and
creativity to their schools and
communities, and achievement in


the sciences and other fields of
interest.

The independent judgment of the
members of the Commission on
Presidential Scholars, with the
concurrence of the President of the
United States, determines final
selection.

Finalists who become Presiden-
tial Scholars will be invited to
Washington, D.C., where they will
be honored by their elected repre-
sentatives, by educators and by
others in the public life of the
nation's capital.

Embassy's Treaty Affairs Chief To Be


Guest Speaker at Law Day Celebration

Certificates Will Be Given to Ships


That Meet Safe Boarding Standards


The week of May 6 has been de-

the Panama Canal. In cooperating
with the Panama Canal Pilots
Association, the observance of Safe
Boarding Week each year is sched-
uled to coincide with the annual
safety campaign of the Interna-
tional Maritime Pilots Association.
The purpose of Safe Boarding
Week is to promote safe boarding.
and debarkation of all vessels
arriving at the Panama Canal.
During the week, from 8 a.m. to
4 p.m., Monday through Friday,
the Marine Bureau will provide a
launch at Cristobal'and at Balboa
for designated teams who will
inspect the boarding facilities of
vessels arriving at the Canal and
those that are docked. Personnel
of the Board with Safety teams
will consist of an assistant port
captain, a Panama Canal pilot,
safety officers and other interested
persons. Representatives of local
steamship agents have been invited
and urged to participate in the
boarding team effort.
Vessels meeting or surpassing all
Panama Canal and international
boarding facility safety standards
will be recognized with a certificate.
Those vessels whose boarding facil-


ities are found to be below standard

Part of the Panama Canal's
overall vital and.continuing safety
program, Safe Boarding Week is
concerned particularly with em-
ployees of steamship agents and
Canal personnel including boarding
officers, pilots, linehandlers, and
others involved in vessel boarding
activities. In the past, a number of
costly and painful injuries were
traced to faulty boarding equip-
ment.

Isthmian College Club

To Award Scholarships
The awarding of $3,500 in scholar-
ships and the installation of 1979-
1980 officers will highlight the Isth-
mian College Club brunch to be
held Saturday, May 5, at 9:30 a.m.
at the Quarry Heights Officers'
Club.
Fran Twomey will relate some
interesting incidents from earlier
club days.
Reservations may be made with
Janice Egli at 64-6531 or Karin
Gabrielson at 52-6257. Cost of the
brunch is $5, and deadline for
reservations is May 2.


Concert Planned in Tribute to Eric S. Oakley


Eric S. Oakley, a long time
Supply Division employee, will be
honored at the St. Christopher
Gymnasium in Parque Lefevre,
Panama, on Sunday, May 6.
The Dedicators, Inc. (Local
Committee) will pay tribute to
Oakley for his civic and community
work.
There will be a concert featuring
the Rainbow City Community


Chorale under the direction of
Mrs. Lorna Miller. The concert will
be the first in a series of scholarship
fund-raising activities planned by
the Dedicators.
Audley M. Webster, assistant to
the superintendent, Schools Divi-
sion, will be the guest speaker.

Gov. H. R. Parfitt has pro-
claimed May I as Law Day in the
Canal Zone and a program of
events has been scheduled on the
Pacific side for its observance.
Highlighting the Law Day ob-
servance will be a ceremony to be
held at the U.S. District Court in
Ancon beginning at I p.m. on
Tuesday, May 1.
U.S. Marshal Clayburne Mc-
Lelland will open the program. The
Reverend John Kennedy, C.M. will
pronounce the invocation and in-
troductory remarks will be by
Judge John Baker of the Balboa
Magistrate's Court. J. Patrick Conley,
executive secretary of the Canal
Zone will read the Governor's pro-
clamation. David Kiyonaga, treas-
urer of the Canal Zone Bar Associa-
tion, will introduce the guest
speaker, Charles A. Schmitz, chief,
Panama Canal Treaty Affairs of the
American Embassy.
Judge John Deming of the Cris-
tobal Magistrate's Court will make
the closing remarks and the Right
Reverend Lemuel B. Shirley will
offer the benediction. Marshal
McLelland will adjourn the ceremony.
During Law Day, from 8 a.m. to
12 noon, there will be tours of the
District Court Building for groups
of 10 persons. Anyone wishing to

In conjunction with Law Day ac-

Bar Association are planning to
visit Canal Zone schools to discuss
the rights of United States citizens
in Panama after the Panama Canal
Zone is disestablished under the new
treaty that goes into effect Octo-
ber 1. This .will be a continuing
activity by the lawyers in the next
few months.
As in the past, members of the
Canal Zone Bar Association, their
families and friends are invited to
the Law Day ceremony at the
District Court.

"Celebrate Children" is the 1979
convention theme of the Interna-
tional Reading Association's salute
to the International Year of the
Child. The Canal Zone Reading
Council has joined the theme by
planning a celebration called "Make
and Take." This will be a workshop
for both parents and teachers to
make games that they can take with
them for use in their homes or
classrooms. Guest speakers for this
event will be Sue Rauld and Onie
Mason of the Canal Zone Schools
curriculum office. They will point
out how games, in addition to
being fun, can be used.to strengthen
and improve children's skills in
reading and language arts.
This is an ideal time for parents
to get ready for those rainy season

Stanford Medical School in 1950
and served his internship and a sur-
' gical residency at Southern Pacific
- Hospital in San Francisco. Fol-
lowing two years as a medical

minadas por el comit6 de Premios
por Incentivo y los premiados son

El premio, que fue establecido en
julio de 1970, es un certificado que
incluye fotografias del actual presi-
dente de los Estados Unidos y del
Gobernador de la Zona del Canal.

maci6n de los empleados no esta-
dounidenses que no seran traslada-
dos al Departamento de Defensa el
10 de octubre para hacer possible la
expedici6n de las tarjetas de identi-
ficaci6n a estos errpleados.
Esta fase del proyecto trata s6lo
con los empleados que se quedarin
trabajando con la Comisi6n del
Canal de Panama despu6s del
1� de octubre. El acopio de datos de
los empleados cuyas funciones
seran transferidas se realizara mas
tarde.
No se les cobrara a los empleados
por ninguno de estos documents.


A partir del 1� de octubre, los
empleados de la Comisi6n del
Canal y sus dependientes que resi-
dan en la antigua Zona del Canal
deberin registrar sus armas de fue-
go con las autoridades respectivas
en la RepAblica de Panama. Como
parte del esfuerzo encaminado a
poner en ejecuci6n el nuevo tratado,
la Subcomisi6n de Policia del
Grupo Binacional de Trabajo (com-
puesto de oficiales de la Policia de
la Zona del Canal y de la Guardia
Nacional de Panama) ha desarro-
llado un program de transferencia
de registro de armas de fuego para
las personas que sean empleados de
la Comisi6n del Canal,.y sus depen-
dientes y que ahora resident en la
Zona del Canal. Este program, que
tiene por objeto facilitar el process
de registro, comenzard el 1- dejunio
y se exteriderA hasta el 30 de sep-
tiembre de 1979. El registro entrara
en vigencia el IQ de octubre de 1979
y tendra validez por un afio.
Para valerse de este program, los
duefos de armas de fuego excepto
escopetas y armas hist6ricas inope-
rantes) deberairseguir los siguientes
pasos:
(a) Llenar el formulario (se
obtiene en las Estaciones de Poli-
cia de Balboa y Crist6bal) indican-,
do la marca, tipo, nfmero de series
y calibre del arma al igual queel uso
que se le piensa dar (caceria, tiro al
blanco, protecci6n personal).
(b) Obtener tres fotos del due-
iio tamafio carnet I" x 11/2".
(c) Traer el formulario debida-
mente completado, las fotos, el
arma con dos cargas de municiones
y $5 en efectivo a la Estaci6n de
Policia de Balboa o Crist6bal.
(d) Los ciudadanos paname-
fios que resident actualmente en la
Zona del Canal y que seran emplea-
dos de la Comisi6n del Canal ten-
drdn que entregar copia de sus
antecedentes policivos.
Los duefios deberin entregar el
arma y las municiones a un agent
de la Policia de la Zona del Canal
que las llevara a Panama para com-
pletar el process de registro que

armas en la Estaci6n de Policia de

lante, los duefios tendran que pagar
una cuota de renovaciri de registro
annual de $5 pero no tendran que
repetir el process complete de re-
gistro. La cuota de $5 cubre todas
armas enumeradas en el permiso.
Los duefios de escopetas y armas
hist6ricas inoperantes (armas uti-
lizadas en guerras pasadas, etc.) de-
beran completar el process ante-
riormente descrito, except que no
tendran que entregar ni arma ni
municiones en la estaci6n de poli-
cia. S61o se require el formulario
debidamente completado, las fotos
del duefio y la cuota para registrar
estas armas. Los duefios de estas
armas hist6ricas tienenila responsa-
bilidad individual de remover el
percutor para que queden inope-
rahtes.
Una vez debidamente registra-
das, la ley panamefia autoriza la
propiedad privada y la posesi6n de
las siguientes armas:
(a) Los rifles de cualquier
calibre.
(b) Pistolas de calibre .22,.25,
.32 y .38. A J , miemnbrps actiyqs
de los clubes de tiro reconocidos
en el Istmo se les permitira tener
pistolas de calibre .45, .357 y .44 y
de 9mm.
(c) Escopetas de calibre 12, 16,
20, 28 y 410. La posesi6n de armas
automaticas, granadas u otros ex-
plosivos de guerra esta prohibida
en Panama. Los rifles de calibre
mayor de .30 s61o podran ser usa-
dos para tiro al blanco en los clubes
mencioiados, perd 'ho para la
caceria. '
Las violaciones de las leyes del
registro de armas de fuego en la
Reptblica de Panama son castiga-
das con la confiscaci6n del arma y
multa de $10 a $600.
Aquellos que prefieran mandar
sus armas de fuego de regreso a los
Estados Unidos, en vez de registrar-
las con Panama, podran Ilamar al
jefe de la Divisi6n de Aduanas al
52-3238 o a Frank Turman al
52-3325 para mas informaci6n.

Clark han sido escogidos como fi-
nalistas en el Programa Presiden-
cial de Escolares de 1979 que todos
los afios selecciona a los graduan-
dos mas intelectualmente distingui-
dos del pais.

El anuncio de los 1,000 estudian-
tes estadounidenses destacados, es-
cogidos como finalists en el pro-
grama de entire mis de tres millones
que se gradfan este afio, fue hecho
por el Comisionado de Educaci6n
de los Estados Unidos y la Comi-


si6n de Escolares Presidenciales.
Cathy, graduanda de la Escuela
Secundaria de Balboa, y Tramel,
graduando de la Escuela Secunda-
ria de Crist6bal, han recibido certi-
ficados de la Comisi6n presidential.
La selecci6n final de aquellos que
se convertirdn en Escolares Presi-
denciales serd hecha por los miem-
bros de la Comisi6n este mes. Se
basara en, ademas de excelencia
acad6mica. muchos factors. tales
como ejecuciones artisticas, capaci-
dad demostrada de liderazgo, con-
tribuciones creativas y decididas a


sus escuelas y comunidades, y
logros en las ciencias y demas
campos del saber.
La ecuanimidad de los miembros
de la Comisi6n de Escolares Presi-
denciales y la aprobaci6n del Presi-
dente de los Estados Unidos deter-
minaran la selecci6n final.
Los finalists que Ileguen a ser
escogidos como Escolares Presiden-
ciales seran invitados a Washing-
ton, D.C. donde congresistas, edu-
cadores y otros funcionarios de la
capital de la naci6n les rendiran

Los miembros de la tripulaci6n del "And Then What" fueron invitados
a una reunion del club que los patrocin6 en la regatta de cayucos de este
aiio, el Club Rotario de Crist6bal-Col6n. El huesped de honor fue el
Director del Area de Latinoamerica de los Rotarios Internacionales,
Enrique Higuera, quien pronunci6 un discurso sobre el program de los
Rotarios Internacionales para ayudar a los nifios en todos los paises. En la

Llenen Requisitos de Seguridad


A partir del 6 de mayo se celebra-
ra la "Semana de Abordajes Segu-
ros" en el Canal de Panama. En
cooperaci6n con la Asociaci6n de
Practicos del Canal de Panama,
cada afo la observancia de la Sema-
na de Abordajes Seguros es progra-
mada para coincidir con la campa-
fia annual de seguridad de la
Asociaci6n Internacional Maritima
de Practicos.
El prop6sito de la Semana de
Abordajes Seguros es promoter
practices seguras de abordaje y
desembarco de todas las naves que
utilizan el Canal de Panama.
Durante la semana, entire las 8
a.m. y 4 p.m., de lunes a viernes, la
Direcci6n de Marina proporciona-
rA una lancha en Crist6bal y en
SBalboa para los equipos designados
que inspeccionarAn las instalacio-
nes de abordaje de las naves que
lleguen a Crist6bal y Balboa y aque-
llas que se encuentren atracadas en
los muelles. Los equipos de "Abor-
dajes Seguros" estan integrados por
un capitan de puerto auxiliar, un
practice del Canal de Panama, fun-
cionarios de seguridad y otro per-
sonal relacionado con este campo.
Representantes de las agencies. na-
vieras de la localidad han sido invi-
tados y exhortados a participar en el
esfuerzo del equipo de abordaje.
Se les dara reconocimiento con un
certificado a las naves que lenen
o sobrepasen todos lps requisitos
de abordaje seguro del Canal de
PanamA e internacionales. Las


naves cuvas instalaciones no Ilcnen
los requisitos indicados tendran
que corregir sus deficiencies antes
de cfectuar el transit.

programado actividades conmemo-
rativas en el sector Pacifico.
Para realzar las actividades del
Dia de la Ley habra una ceremonia
en la sala del tribunal de distrito en
Anc6n que comenzara desde la
1 p.m. el martes 10 de mayo.
El Alguacil Clayburne McLel-
land iniciarA el program. El Reve-
rendo John Kennedy, C.M., pro-
nunciari la invocaci6n y el Juez
John Baker, de la Corte de Balboa,
pronunciara unas palabras de intro-
ducci6n. J. Patrick Conley, Secre-
tario Ejecutivo de la Zona del
Canal, leera la Proclama del Gober-
nador. David Kiyonaga, tesorero
del Colegio de Abogados de la Zona
del Canal, presentara al orador
principal, Charles A. Schmitz, jefe
de Asuntos del Tratado del Canal
de PanamA de la Embajada de los
Estados Unidos.
Las palabras finales estardn a
cargo del Juez John Deming de la

El texto de la proclama del
Gobernador sobre el Dia de la Ley
es el que sigue:
El Congress de los Estados
Unidos ha designado el primer dia
de mayo como Dia de la Ley en los
Estados Unidos.


Este afio tendra lugar la cele-
braci6n annual nimero 22 del Dia de
la Ley en la Naci6n- un dia especial
para reflexionar sobre nuestro lega-
do de libertad individual y para
dedicarlo a celebrar el imperio de la
ley.
El imperio de la ley no es auto-
matico. Cada ciudadano debe estar
dispuesto a aceptar la responsabili-
dad que le cabe de administrar y
obedecer la ley si es que han de pre-
servarse los derechos y oportunida-
des de todos los ciudadanos.
Los estadounidenses tambi6n
tienen la responsabilidad y el dere-
cho constitutional de cambiar la ley
en forma legal cuando tal cambio es
justificado. Nuestros antecesores
nos dieron este derecho para que la
Naci6n y su pueblo puedan seguir
siendo libres.
Como bien dijera Thomas
Jefferson, "Las leyes y las institu-
ciones deben ir de la mano con el
progress de la mente humana".

El lema seleccionado en reco-
nocimiento del Dia de la Ley 1979
es. por lo tanto, el mis apropiado:
"Nuestros Derechos que Cambian".
En este mundo que cambia tan
vertiginosamente, es esencial que
preservemos y que fortalezcamos
nuestra habilidad para responder
a las necesidades de cambios legiti-
mos al mismo tiempo que salva-
guardamos los derechos de todos
los ciudadanos.

POR LO TANTO, yo, Harold
R. Parfitt, Gobernador de la Zona
del Canal, por este medio proclamo
el martes 10 de mayo de 1979 como
DIA DE LA LEY en toda la Zona
del Canal y. exhorto a todos los es-
tadounidenses y a todos los otros
ciudadanos a que se unan en esta
significativa observancia mediante
programs y actividades que subra-
yen la devoci6n de nuestra Naci6n
por el principio de justicia igual
para todos.

Invitan a Padres y Maestros a Inventar Juegos


La Asociaci6n Internacional de
Lectura saluda al Afio Internacio-
nal del Niflo con su tema para la
convenci6n de 1979, "Exaltemos a
los Nifios". El Consejo de Lectura
de la Zona del Canal se one al tema
y esta organizando un program
intitulado "Haz y Lleva". Se trata
de un taller para padres y maestros
donde puedan confeccionar juegos
que puedan Ilevarse para usarlos
en sus casas o sus salones de classes.
Los oradores de fondo del event
seran Sue Rauld y Onie Mason de
la oficina de curriculum de la Divi-
si6n de Escuelas de la Zona del
Canal. Ellas sefialaran c6mo los
juegos, ademAs de ser divertidos,
pueden usarse para reforzar y mejo-
rar las habilidades de lectura y
linguisticas de los nifios.
Es una oportunidad ideal para
que los padres se preparcn para
esos dias lluviosos de la 6poca de


vacaciones escolares cuando los
nifios no pueden salir de sus casas.
Tambi6n tendran los maestros una
oportunidad de prepararjuegos que
ellos puedan usar para comenzar el
nuevo afio lectivo.

en el Hospital Gorgas ahora que la
clinic cuenta con un medico sola-

El Coronel M. J. Lally Jr., Jefe de Estado Mayor de la 193a. Brigada de
Infanteria (Zona del Canal), corona a Andrea Moran, reina de la Feria
de Actividades Juveniles de 1979 del Sector Atlintico. La feria tuvo lugar
recientemente en el campo de deportes del Fuerte Gulick. La Srta. Morin,
quien presidiri las actividades juveniles del Atlantico durante el pr6ximo
ailo, represent al Grupo de las Fuerzas Especiales 3/7 en el concurso para
reina. Ella y su unidad recaudaron $8,000 a beneficio de los programs
juveniles, lo que le permiti6 ganar la corona. Sandra Smith, quien
represents a USARSA, ocup6 el segundo lugar.

publicado trabajos en su espe-
cialidad.
El Dr. Carlos A. Donate, pana-
mefio de nacimiento, es ahora
miembro del personal de cirugia ge-
neral en el Hospital Gorgas, des-
pues de haber prestado servicios de
cirugia general por afio y tres meses
en el Hospital Coco Solo. Se le noti-
,fic6 en diciembre de 1978 que habia
"sido certificado pot la Junta de
Cirugia General. Obtuvo su titulo
medico en la Universidad de M6xi-
co en 1967; hizo su internado en el
Hospital Santo Tomis en la ciudad
de Panama y el Hospital Amador
Guerrero en Colon; fue m6dico re-
sidente en el Hospital Gorgas de
1971 a 1975. Ha escrito para su pu-
blicaci6n various trabajos en su
especialidad.
El Dr. Bernardo Granadino,
quien trabaja en el Servicio a Pa-
cientes Externos del Hospital Gor-
gas, fue certificado en diciembre de
1978 como Diplomado de la Junta
Americana de Medicina Familiar.
Obtuvo su titulo medico en la Es-
cuela de Medicina de Stanford en
1950 e hizo su internado y su resi-
dencia quirurgica en el Hospital del
S'ur del Pacifico en San Francisco.
Despu6s de dos afios como official
medico en la Fuerza Aerea de los
Estados Unidos, el Dr. Granadino
ejerci6 su profesi6n en prActica pri-
vada por ocho afios en San Francis-
