Librarian-Curator Emily J. Price

Closes 27-Year Library Career


Emily J. Price, Librarian-Curator,
Canal Zone Library-Museum, is
retiring at the end of the month,
following 27 years of Canal serv-
ice, all with the Canal Zone Library.
Born in Baltimore, Md., Emily
first came to the Canal Zone in
1937, when her father Capt. L. P.
Johnson was assigned to the Naval
Ammunition Depot at Balboa.
She received a bachelor of arts
degree in 1937 from Bryn Mawr
College and a master's degree in
1956 in library service from Colum-
bia University.
In 1940 she was married in New
York to the late James L. Price, who
for many years was associated with
travel and tourist' activities on the
Isthmus.


Her service with the Canal Zone
Library goes back to 1950, when
she began working as a periodicals
assistant. She served as assistant
cataloger, chief cataloger, chief
technical services and was pro-
moted to Librarian-Curator in 1967.
During her library career, she
has been a member of the Amer-
ican Library Association and the
Special Library Association and at-
tended conferences of both organi-
zations in the United States. She is
a founding member of the Associa-
tion of Graduate Librarians of the
Isthmus of Panama, a charter mem-
ber and past president of Soropti-
mist International of Panama and a
charter member of the Friends of
the National Museum. She also has
been an active member of the Altar
Guild, St. Luke's Cathedral.


Emily has two children: daughter
Edelin Price de Alvarez, who lives
in David with husband Gilberto

burg, S.C.
Emily will probably spend much
of her time traveling between the
United States and Panama, visiting
her children and grandchildren.

reading, listening to music, walking
. and swimming for Emily, who re-
marks that she has enjoyed im-
mensely her library work and loved
the people she has worked with and
for. "I shall miss it all but I am
longing to be on my own for the
first time in my life," she says with
Emily J. Price a bit of nostalgia showing.

Last Graduates Receive Their Diplomas


At Paraiso, Rainbow City High Schools


Gov. H. R. Parfitt presented
diplomas to 35 graduating seniors
at the final commencement cer-
emony held last evening at the
Rainbow City High School gym-
nasium while 53 graduates of Pa-
raiso High School received their
diplomas from Lt. Gov. Richard L.
Hunt at the last commencement
exercise at that school.
Honor graduates Mary Webster
and Ana Sainten delivered the
seniors farewell address in English
and Spanish, respectively, at the
Paraiso ceremony. Cecilia Smith,
who holds second highest honors


in her class, gave the welcoming
address and Principal DuBois W.
Andrews presented the-class. Mon-
signor Carlos Ambrosio Lewis,
Auxiliary Bishop of Panama and a
graduate of the Latin American
schools, gave the invocation and
benediction was by the Reverend
Ephraim Alphonse, Superinten-
dent Emeritus of the Wesleyan
Methodist Church of Panama.
Following the presentation of
diplomas by Governor Parfitt, Nilka
Clarke delivered the main address
in Spanish on behalf of the Rain-
bow City graduates. Elvia Brown


and Soraya Machado gave brief
talks in English on the class theme,
"Our Future Is Now: A Positive
Approach To Success." The ad-
dress of welcome was by Francisco
Beatty. The invocation was by the
Reverend Alvin Ingram, C.M., of
the Holy Family Catholic Church,
Margarita. The Reverend Wilfred
D. Morgan, Bethany Baptist
Church, Rainbow City, gave the
benediction.
Baccalaureate services were held
Sunday, December 11, at Paraiso
and Rainbow City high schools for
the graduating seniors.


U.S. Coast Guard Commander Joins Marine Bureau


Comdr. Richard J. Clements,
USCG, has joined the Canal's Ma-
rine Bureau as Assistant to the Di-
rector for Marine Safety. He came
to the Canal Zone from St. Louis,
Mo. where he was Chief of Re-
creational Boating Safety for a
22-state area.
Commander Clements brings with
him more than 21 years of experi-
ence in all phases of Coast Guard
activities. A member of the Coast
Guard since he was 20 years of
age, his service record includes a
wide range of duties.
Among his former assignments
are Commanding Officer of the
Coast Guard Cutters Juniper and
Laurel; Commanding Officer of the
Coast Guard Base at Key West,
Fla.; Group Commander and Cap-
tain of the Port for the Florida
Keys; and assignments afloat and
ashore in Search and Rescue, Aids

He has had overseas assignments in
Vietnam and Hawaii


Clements attended the Univer-
sity of Tennessee at Knoxville and.
Old Dominion University, Norfolk,
Va. and received his commission
through Officers' Candidate School
at Yorktown, Va.
He is married to the former
Georgiana Keyes, a former Army
nurse from Maine, whom he met
when both were serving in Viet-
nam. They have two children, Jack,
15, who attends Balboa High
School, and Katie, 3. The Clements
family includes Mrs. Leola Keyes,
Mrs. Clements' mother.
Among his favorite pastimes,
Commander Clements includes fish-
ing, tennis, golf, and hunting.
Highly enthusiastic about his as-
signment here, Clements says that
he is proud to be a part of the
Panama Canal effort and hopes that
his years of experience with the
Coast Guard will be of value to
the Marine Bureau.


Blind Students Share in Christmas Joy Thanks to Balboa Elks


While the rest of us are still
scurrying about buying Christmas
presents and trying to find time to
decorate the tree,- members of
Lodge 1414, Benevolent Protective
Order. of the Elks, have already
given a sit-down dinner party with
all the trimmings and gifts from
Santa Claus to boot.
For the 15th year in a row the
Elks' Community and Social Wel-
fare Committee has seen to it that
the 70 students and teachers at the
Helen Keller School for the Blind
in Betania have a Christmas cel-
ebration to remember.
The special feature of the event
is Santa Claus, played by the com-
mittee's chairman Mike Progana, a
Senior Locks Master at Pedro Mi
guel. It is fitting that Progana
should take the part of good Saint
Nick, since he more than anyone is
the guiding force behind the party
and has a deep personal commit-
ment to the blind.
Over the years Progana has
gotten to know the children and
their teachers personally. Of the
children he says, "They are like
all normal kids in their wants, de-
sires,. and preferences. They want


the same as other kids-above all,
to be loved." And Progana lovds
them.
They range in age from about 5
to 18, and Progana takes the time
to find out what each wants for
Christmas. With $500 supplied by
his lodge, he tramps all over town
to find exactly what they asked for,
whether it's a big "walking doll"
or new clothes.
When he dresses in his Santa
suit for the party, Progana is care-
ful to use a different brand of
toothpaste and cologne than he
usually wears in order to fool the
younger children who still believe
in Santa Claus. When they crawl
up on his knee their well-developed
sense of smell tells them if. they
are talking to someone they know,
and Progana wants them to out-
grow the illusion of Santa Claus
the way other children do.
He apparently is successful in his
disguise. One year he asked a little
girl what Santa could give her for
Christmas, and she replied that she
wanted Mike Progana to come to
the party.
Perhaps because he was raised
in an orphanage and "got a lot of


help along the way," Progana has
a strong desire to help these stu-
dents, who live in temporary foster .
homes while they attend the Helen
Keller school. He feels that educa-
tion is "something lasting" that can
be done for the blind.
The Elks provide scholarships to
several of the students for further-
study when they leave the school. r
One of their success stories is that
of Jos6 Campos, whose musical
ability was noticed at an early age
by Lodge members. The Elks put
him through 5 years of study at
Panama's National Conservatory of '.. ..4
Music, and today Campos teaches - ,
music at a school for handicapped
children in David. '
The Elks have also provided LAl".
Braille paper and writing machines .!/
to the school and purchased an ex-
pensive portable slit-lamp micro-
scope for use in a mobile unit that . .... .
travels to outlying schools in the
Republic to examine children with
eye ailments.

Get Your Car Ready Now


For Jan. Safety Inspection


The 1978 safety inspection of
privately-owned motor vehicles
licensed in the Canal Zone will start
Monday, January 9, 1978 and end
Tuesday, February 28, 1978, in
the Panama Canal Company's Mo-
tor Transportation Division garages
at Ancon and Cristobal.
Initially, the inspection will be
performed during the hours of
8 a.m. through 5 p.m., Monday
through Friday, with the exception
of holidays. The inspection hours
are established to enable owners
who work regular office hours and
others who work on a shift basis
to have their cars inspected out-
side of the normal work period.
To pass inspection, the vehicles
must be in such safe operating con-
dition as not to endanger the driver
or other occupant or any person
on the highway. The inspection
covers brakes, lighting system,
windows, windshield and wind-
shield wipers, turn indicators, horn,
wheel alignment, steering gear,
exhaust system, tires and other
parts of the car which affect safety.
Upon successfully passing inspection,
an inspection sticker will be placed
on the windshield of the vehicle


and an inspection certificate will
be issued. The latter must he
carried in the vehicles all times.
Cost for the inspection, including
sticker and certificate, is $1. Vehi-
cle registration must be presented
at the time of inspection.
Canal Zone Vehicle Regulations
require that all privately-owned
motor vehicles, including motor-
cycles, trailers and semi-trailers
(including boat trailers) registered
in the Canal Zone be inspected
each year during the months of
January and February. Owners are
strongly urged to have their vehi-
cles inspected early to avoid the
usual last minute rush.
Vehicles owners are reminded
that any repairs necessary to pass
inspection are the responsibility of
the owner. Motor Transportation
Division cannot guarantee that re-
pairs can be accomplished within
MTD in order to meet the Feb-
ruary 28 deadline. Private repairs
are scheduled on an appointment
basis so as not to interfere with
official vehicle repair work. In ad-
dition to the MTD Repair Shop,
there are several repair shops avail-
able in the Republic of Panama.


Benjamin Bolt

Classical guitarist Benjamin Bolt
will present a concert at 2:30 p.m.,
Sunday, December 18, at the Cris-
tobal High School auditorium under
the sponsorship of the Cristobal
YMCA. Bolt has studied with mas-
ters in the United States, Spain and
South American countries, and is
acclaimed as an accomplished clas-
sical guitarist. The program for
Bolt's third appearance on the At-
lantic side will include his own
transcription of Variations on the
Theme of Greensleeves. Tickets,
$2.50 for adults and $1.50 for stu-
dents, are available at the Cristo-
bal Y, High School Music Office,
Coco Solo Retail Store and Fort
Davis Army Community Services.
They also will be sold at the door.


Quadrille Club To Host

Annual Christmas Party
Saapeeda-Regae Quadrille Club
will host it's second Annual Christ-
mas Treat on Sunday, December 18,
at the Paraiso Elementary School
Gymnasium. The offspring of the
patrons who supported the club's
fund-rising activity (First Anniver-
-sary and Miss Quadrille Coronation
Ball) held on June 25, 1977 will
be feted.
Children from the following com-
munities will attend: Colon, Rain-
bow City, Santa Rita, Fort Gulick,
Santa Cruz, Paraiso, Pedro Miguel,
Howard AFB, and Rio Abajo.
The public is reminded that only
children in possession of a ticket
issued by the club are invited to
this Invitational Christmas Treat.


The Panama Canal Recreation
Services will sponsor a tennis tour-
nament December 19 through De-
cember 24 at the Coco Solo Tennis
courts located behind Cristobal
High School. Matches will be
played beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Divisions will be:
Boys 18 and under-singles.
Girls 18 and under-singles.
Girls 16 and under-singles.
Men's Doubles-Open.

Two consecutive holiday weeks,
plus the liberal leave policy tradi-
tionally granted during this season
results in less than normal business

Canal Zone College Medical Technology Program

Rated Excellent by Accreditation Team From U.S.


The Medical Technology Program
of the Canal Zone College was.re-
accredited with a rating of excel-
lent by a team that had read David
McCullough's "The Path Between
the Seas" in preparation for the
task.
The accrediting team from the
National Accrediting Agency For
Chemical Laboratory Sciences
(NAACLS) used the book and, a
120-page report submitted -by the
staffs of Gorgas Hospital and the
._-i11.. to iul l:. acquirit themselves
with the school and its program
.before coming here.
After inspecting facilities of both
institutions and interviewing their
staffs, the team rendered its ver-
dict: the Canal Zone College Med-
ical Technology program could be


a model for programs in the United
States.
The team was impressed with
the rapport that exists between the
college and hospital staffs, the high
quality of teaching facilities, and
the preparation of the teaching
staff. They made mention of the
fact that the academic training re-
ceived at the college is more de-
manding than the NAACLS, which
accredits all allied health programs,
actually demands. The college re-
quires a minimum of 27 hours
chemistry, 28. hours biology, 8
hours physics, and 5 hours math,
while the NAACLS minimum re-
quirements are 16 hours chemistry
and 16 hours biology.
Chairman of the Natural Science
Department DeWitt Myers explains
that the college is too small to have


separate courses for different allied

technology program and the pre-
med program are one and the same
and students leave it prepared for
medical school.
Results of standardized tests
prove that the high quality of the
program is paying off. As of 1965,
99 percent or 90 out of 91 of CZC
medical technology students passed
the standardized tests, while only
75 to 80 percent of the students in
the United States passed them.
Students who complete course
work here receive their hospital
training at Gorgas or in one of the
25 hospitals in the United States
with which the college is affiliated.
Students can apply to any U.S.
hospital for final training.

Nova University of Fort Lauder-
dale, Fla., accredited by the South-
ern Association, is offering local res-
idents an opportunity to earn bach-
elor of science and master of
science degrees in criminal justice.

Instead of students going to the
university, the university comes to
the students, who are then organ-
ized into clusters. Courses are offer-
ed in a series of meetings that are
held every second weekend for the
bachelor's degree and every third
weekend for the master's degree.
Each area of study is designed to
be covered in four weekend ses-
sions, at the end of which students
will have earned 6-credit hours
toward their degrees.

Teachers from all over the
United States with experience in
the criminal justice system guide
class discussions, making a special
effort to integrate the practical with
the theoretical.

In September the first cluster of
students studying for the master's
degree was organized, followed by
a second cluster in November. Ap-
plications are now being accepted


for a third cluster, which will begin
its first term in the near future.

Enrollment is also opened for the
first session of classes towards the
bachelor's degree, which will begin
in January. Any student with an as-
sociate of arts degree or 2 years of
basic college study may enter the
program.

Students may register now at the
Nova University Office, located on
the first floor of the Diablo Ele-
mentary School. Office hours are
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Information

Scout Executive Gets Post in U.S.


J. Ronald Tyson, Local Scout
Executive, has been promoted to
the position of Director of Sup-
port Service for the North Florida
Council, Jacksonville, Fla. His
duties will be, to provide leader-
ship for the exploring division of
the council, to promote camping
activities in the area and to as-
sume the duties of office admin-
istrator. His council will cover the
geographical area that includes
Gainesville, Ocala, Cedar Key,
Live Oak, St. Augustine and Jack-
sonville.

During his 4%2 years in the Canal
Zone, Tyson has given leadership
in a number of improvements at
Camp Chagres, and changed the
office operation to a more' up-to-
date self-service .center. He in-
itiated the first cub scout day camp
program in the Canal Zone, and
helped to strengthen arid invigor-
ate the Explorer Presidents' Asso-
ciation as the leadership force of
the exploring program. The annual
Scout-O-Rama, which has been
enjoyed by thousands of youths from
the three scout associations on the
Isthmus, as well as the entire com-
munity, was also initiated under his
leadership. Tyson has been active
in the Navy League and is presently
on the executive committee of that
organization. He has also been

active in church and civic projects,
with special efforts on behalf of
the Cuna Indians in the San Blas
Islands.

Tyson expects to depart in early
January to commence his duties in
Florida. His two older children are
in college in the United States and
daughter Amy is a third grade stu-
dent at Balboa Elementary School.
,Irs. Tyson, a teacher at Curundu
Elementary School, plans to remain
on the Isthmus through the school
year.


A Xmas Present That Could Save a Loved One's Life


If smoke detectors, were as com-
mon as toaster-ovens, blenders,
electric carving knives, and other
small household appliances, hun-
dreds-even thousands of people
could save themselves from fire
each year.
Residential fires claim an esti-
mated 6,500 lives annually, accord-
ing to studies by the National Fire
Protection Association. Some of these
people die from burns, but three
times as many die from smoke inha-
lation-breathing deadly toxic gases
released into the air from smolder-


ing common household furnishings.
Smoke detectors give early warn-
ing of fire. It can mean the differ-
ence between a safe escape and no
escape at all.
Under most circumstances, an
approved smoke detector properly
placed, installed and maintained,
will do a satisfactory job in giving
early warning of fire.
Approved models of smoke de-
tectors are of the photoelectric (or
optical) and the ionization station
type. Both''types can be powered by
household current or by batteries.


For about the cost of an electric
kitchen appliance, perhaps only
seldom used, a smoke detector can
protect a household 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year. Combine a
smoke detector with a well-thought-
out and rehearsed emergency es-
cape plan to vastly increase the
chances of family survival in case
of fire.
So, this Christmas, for him or

Limited Lighting


OK'd for Xmas

Since 1973, the Company-Gov-
ernment and residents have cur-
tailed decorative Christmas light-
ing as a contribution toward energy
conservation.
It is evident that the energy
crisis is not over and that the need
for conservation continues; however,
it is also well known that energy
consumption for air-conditioning and
other purposes far exceeds that
used for lighting.
The Governor has approved lim-
ited indoor/outdoor decorative holi-
day lighting for Company-Govern-
ment units and has suggested sim-
ilar guidelines for residents. All are
urged to compensate for any lighted
displays by equal or greater reduc-
tion of electricity when those holi-
day lights are on.
Operation of inside or outside
lighted displays during the hours
of 6 to 10 p.m. during the period
December 21 through January 3,
1978, is considered prudent for this
holiday season.


36 Fire Extinguishers

Potentially Dangerous

Persons who bought aerosol can-
type fire extinguishers at the toy
hardware annex of the Balboa
Housewares and at Building 22 of
the Coco Solo Retail Store are
urged to return them to place of
purchase as soon as possible because
they are potentially dangerous.
A total of 36 aerosol can-type fire
extinguishers were sold at $4 each
under the brand name "Galley
Guard" between November 1976
and November 1977.
The Chief of the Fire Division
has reported that these extinguishers
contain Carbon tetrachloride which
creates phosgene gas when it comes.

Emily J. Price, bibliotecaria en-
cargada de la Biblioteca y Museo
de la Zona del Canal, se acogeri' a
la jubilaci6n a fin de mes, despues
de 27 aiios de servicio con el Ca-
nal, todos con la Biblioteca de la
Zona del Canal.
Nacida en Baltimore, Maryland,
Emily vino por primer vez a la
Zona del Canal en 1937, cuando su
padre, el CapitAn L. P. Johnson,
fue asignado al dep6sito de muni-
ciones de la armada en Balboa.
Recibi6 su titulo de bachiller en
artes en 1937 de la Universidad
Bryn Mawr y el titulo de maestria
en 1956 en servicio biliotecario de
la Universidad de Columbia.
En 1940 se cas6 en Nueva York
con James L. Price, quien durante
inuchos afios cstuvo asociado con
actividades de viajes y turismo en
el Tstmo.

Ultimos Graduandos Recibieron sus


Diplomas en Paraiso y Rainbow City


El Gobernador H. R. Parfitt hizo
entrega de diplomas a 35 estudian-
tes de la clase graduanda durante
la ultima ceremonia de graduaci6n
que tuvo lugar anoche en el Gim-
nasio de la Escuela Secundaria de
Rainbow City, y los 53 graduandos
de la Escuela Secundaria de Parai-
so recibieron sus diplomas de manos
del Vicegobernador, Richard L.
Hunt, durante la ultima ceremonial
de graduaci6n de dicha escuela.
Las graduandas de honor Mary
Webster y Ana Sainten dieron el
discurso de fondo en espafiol e in-
gl6s, respectivamente, en la cere-
monia de la Escuela Secundaria de
Paraiso. Cecilia Smith, quien ocup6


el segundo lugar en su clase, dio el
discurso de bienvenida y el Direc-
tor DuBois W. Andrews present a
la clase graduanda. Su Excelencia
Mons. Carlos Ambrosio Lewis, Obis-
po Auxiliar de la Iglesia Cat6lica
en PanamA y egresado de las es-
cuelas latinoamericanas, imparti6 la
invocaci6n, mientras que la bendi-
ci6n estuvo a cargo del Reverendo
Ephraim Alphonse, Superintenden-
te Emeritus de la Iglesia Metodista
Wesleyana en Panami.
A continuaci6n de la entrega de
diplomas por el Gobernador Par-
fitt, Nilka Clarke present el dis-
curso de fondo en espafiol en nom-
bre de los graduandos de Rainbow
City. Elvia Brown y Soraya Ma-


chado dieron charlas breves en in-
gl6s sobre el tema de la clase
del '77, "Our Future Is Now:
A Positive Approach To Success"

La misa de graduaci6n para la
Clase de 1977 de las Escuclas de
Paraiso y Rainbow City' fue cele-
brada el domingo 11 de diciembre.


Comandante del Guardacosta a Direcci6n de Marina


El Comandante Richard J. Clem-
ents, del Servicio de Guardacostas
de los E.E.U.U., recientemente se
incorpor6 a la Direcci6n de Opera-
clones Marinas como Ayudante del
Director para la Seguridad Marina.
Lleg6 a la Zona del Canal proce-
dente de Saint Louis, Missouri,
donde dqsempefi6 el cargo de Jefe
de Seguridad Recreativa-Botes para
un area de 22 estados.
El comandante Clements tiene
mas de 21 afios de experiencia en
todas las fases de las actividades
del Guardacostas. Como miembro
de los Guardacostas desde la edad
de 20 afios, su servicio abarca un
amplio alcance de deberes.
Sus asignaciones anteriores inclu-
yeron, Comandante de las naves
Guardacostas Juniper y Laurel; Co-
mandante de la Base de Guarda-
costas de Cayo Hueso y Florida;
Comandante de Grupo v CapitAn
del Puerto de los Cayos; y asigna-
ciones a hordo y en tierra en ope-
raciones de B6squeda y Rescate,
Ayudas a la Navegaci6n y Segu-

Oriundo de Fort Lauderdale, Flo-


rida, Clements curs6 studios en la
Universidad de Tennessee en Knox-
ville y'la Universidad Old Domi-
nion en Norfolk, Virginia, y recibi6
su comisi6n mediante su asistencia
a la Escuela para Aspirantes a Ofi-
ciales en Yorktown, Virginia.
Es casado con Georgiana Keyes,
de Maine, exenfermera del ejercito,
a quien conoci6 cuando ambos pres-
taban servicio en Vietnam. Tienen
dos hijos, Jack, de 15 afios de edad,
que cursa studios en la Escuela
Secundaria de Balboa, y Katie, de
3 afios de edad. La Sra. Leola
Keyes, madre de la sefiora Clem-
ents reside con la familiar.
Los pasatiempos favorites del
Comandante Clements incluyen la
pesca, el tenis, el golf, y la caceria.
Esta sumamente entusiasmado con
su asignaci6n aqui. Clements dice
que se siente orgulloso de former
parte del esfuerzo del Canal de Pa-
nama y espera que sus ainos de ex-
periencia con el Servicio de Guar-
dacostas serAn valiosos en la Direc-
ci6n de Operaciones Marinas.


Logia Elks Ofrece Alegre Velada Para Estudiantes Ciegos


Mientras que en nuestra mayoria
a6n estamos atareados con las com-
pras de regalos de Navidad y tra-
tando de hacer tiempo para adornar
el Arbol, los socios de Ia Logia 1414,
de la Orden Ben6vola y Protectora
de los Elks, ya dieron una comida
y fiesta con todos los plates propios
de esta 6poca y Santa Claus obse-
qui6 cantidades de regalos.
Este es el 159 afio consecutive
que el Comit6 Comunal y de
Bienestar Social de los Elks viene
agasajando a los 70 alumnos y
maestros de la Escuela Helen Ke-
ller para Ciegos en Betania con
una celebraci6n Navidefia que no
olvidarAn.
La atracci6n especial del event
es Santa Claus, representado por el
president del Comit6, Mike Proga-
na, maestre de esclusas en Pedro
Miguel. Nada mas natural que Pro-
gana hiciera las veces de Santa
Claus ya que 61 mAs que nadie es
el promovedor de estas fiestas y
tiene un compromise profundo y
personal para con los ciegos.
Durante el transcurso de los aiios
Progana ha Ilegado a conocer a los
nifios y a sus maestros personal-
mente. Su comentario sobre los ni-
iios es, "Todos son como cualquicr
nifio normal en sus necesidades, dc-
seos y preferencias. Ellos quiercn
las mismas cosas que otros niiios


quieren-sobre todo, ser amados."
Y es justamente lo que Progana les
da-amor.
Las edades de estos nifios fluc-
t6an entire los 5 y 18 afios, y Proga-
na se toma el tiempo para averi-
guar lo que cada uno quiere para
estas Navidades. Con $500 que le
fue proporcionado por su logia, 61
camina today la ciudad de Panami
buscando justamente lo que le pi-
dieron, ya sea una "muieca grande
que camine" o ropa nueva.
Cuando se pone su traje de Santa
Claus para la fiesta, Progana es muy
cauteloso de usar una marca distin-
ta de pasta de dientes y colonia de
lo que usualmente acostumbra usar,
con el objeto de despistar a los pe-
queiiuelos que todavia creen en
Santa Claus. Cuando se suben a su
rodilla su sentido de olfato suma-
mente desarrollado les dice si ha-
blan con alguien conocido, y Pro-
gana prefiere que poco a poco se
les pase la ilusi6n de Santa Claus
lo mismo que los otros nifios.
Aparentemente tiene much 4xito
con su disfraz. Un aiio le pregunt6
a una nifia qu6 queria que le tra-
jera Santa Claus para las Navidades,
y respondi6 que queria que Mike
Progana viniera a la fiesta.
Como Progana fue criado en un
orfanato y "recibi6 much ayuda
durante sus afios de crecimiento",
demuestra un fuerte deseo de ayu-


dar a estos estudiantes, que resident
en hogares temporales de crianza
mientras asisten a la escuela Helen
Keller. El siente que la educaci6n
es "algo duradero" que se le puede
dar al ciego.
Los Elks otorgan becas a varies
de los estudiantes para que sigan
studios avanzados cuando dejen la
escuela. Uno de sus cuentos de mis
6xito es sobre Jos6 Campos, cuyo
talent musical fue descubierto a
una edad temprana por los socios de
la Logia. Los Elks le pagaron los
studios durante 5 arios en el Con-
servatorio Nacional de M6sica de
PanamA, y hoy dia Campos ensefia
masica en una escuela para nifios
impedidos en David.
Los Elks tambi6n han obsequiado
a la escuela papel y mAquinas de
escribir en relieve para uso de los
ciegos y compraron un aparato por-
tatil para el examen de los ojos
que usarA una unidad m6vil que
viaja a escuelas distantes en la Re-
p6blica a fin de examiner a los ni-
fios que sufren de enfermedades de
la vista.
Progana personalmente ha pues-
to a 16 nifios, que fueron referidos
a 61 por personas interesadas, en
contact con la escuela Helen
Keller, donde recibieron la atenci6n
que necesitaban.

son la responsabilidad del propie-
tario. La Divisi6n de Transporte a
Motor no puede asegurar de que

lleres a fin de satisfacer la fecha
limited del 28 de febrero. Las repa-

son programadas por citas de

Benjamin Bolt
Benjamin Bolt, virtuoso de la guita-
rra clAsica, presentara un concerto
a las 2:30 p.m, el domingo 18 de
diciembre, en el auditorio de la Es-
cuela Secundaria de Crist6bal bajo
los auspicios del YMCA de Crist6-
bal. Bolt estudi6 con los maestros
de la guitarra en los Estados Uni-
dos, Espaiia y paises de Sur Ame-
rica, y es conocido como notable
guitarrista clAsico. Este sera su ter-
cer concerto en el sector Atlintico.
El program incluirA su propia
adaptaci6n de las variaciones del
Tema de Greensleeves. Los boletos

Del Club de Cuadrillas
El Club de Bailes de Cuadrilla
Saapeeda-Regae celebrard su se-
gunda Fiesta Navidefia Anual, el
domingo 18 de diciembre, en el
Gimnasio de la Escuela Primaria
de Paraiso. Los hijos de los que
apoyaron la actividad de recaudar
fondos para el Club (Primer Ani-
versario y Baile de Coronaci6n de

El revisado de seguridad de 1978
para vehiculos privados registrados
en la Zona del Canal empezarA el
lunes, 9 de enero de 1978, y ter-
minarA el martes, 28 de febrero de
1978, en los garajes de Anc6n y de
Crist6bal de la Divisi6n de Trans-
porte a Motor de la Compafiia del
Canal de Panama.
Al principio se levarA a cabo de
8 a.m. a 5 p.m. durante la semana
laboral, de lunes a viernes, con la
excepci6n de los dias de fiesta. Es-
tas horas de inspecci6n fueron es-
tablecidas para permitir que los
propietarios que laboran durante las
horas regulars de oficina y otros
que trabajan turnos hagan el revi-
sado de sus autom6viles fuera de
las horas normales de trabajo.
Para que el autom6vil pase la
inspecci6n deberA estar en tal es-
tado de seguridad como para ser
operado sin poner en peligro al con-
ductor y a otros pasajeros, o a per-
sonas que se encuentren en la ca-
rretera. Se inspeccionarAn los fre-
nos, los sistemas de alumbrado, las
ventanas, los parabrisas y limpia-
parabrisas, las luces de sefiales, las
bocinas, el alineamiento de las rue-
das, los sistemas de conducci6n, los
sistemas de escape, las Ilantas y
otras parties del autom6vil que afec-
tan la seguridad. Si pasa con exito
la inspecci6n, un sell de inspecci6n
sera colocado en el parabrisas del
vehiculo y se entregarA un certifi-

Los bombers del Cuartel de Balboa se reinen para
observer al Segundo Oficial Jurgen Barthel en los mo-
mentos que hace entrega de un salvavidas del barco
"Badenstein", de Bremen, Alemania, al Capitin Alex
Morris, Comandante de la Estaci6n de Bomberos,
como muestra de agradecimiento por el desempefio
sobresaliente del personal de la Divisi6n de Bombe-
ros de la Zona del Canal cuando combatian el incen-


dio a bordo del barco. El incendio comenz6 cuando
el barco, aun cargado con algod6n y granos de caf6,
se encontraba en el ancladero en el sector Pacifico,
y los bombers tuvieron que trabajar durante 5 dias
para apagarlo. A la derecha de Barthel estA el Jefe
de la Divisi6n de Bomberos Frank Berry, el Coman-
dante G. O. Flores, del Distrito de Balboa, y el
CapitAn Jaye Dietz.


Equipo de Acreditaci6n Califica de Excelente

Program de Tecnologia Medica en U de la Zone


El Programa de Tecnologia
M6dica de la Universidad de la
Zona del Canal fue reacreditado
con una calificaci6n de excelente
por un grupo de personas que ha-
bia leido el libro de David McCul-
lough "The Path Between the Seas"
en preparaci6n para la tarea.
El grupo acreditador de la Agen-
cia Nhcional Acreditadora del La-
boratorio de Ciencias Quimicas
(NAACLS) utilize el libro y un in-
forme de 120 pAginas que fueron
sometidos por el personal adminis-
trativo del Hospital Gorgas y la
Universidad para familiarizarse ple-
namente con la escuela y su pro-
grama antes de llegar aqui.
Despubs de examiner las instala-
ciones dc:. a.n, 1 instituciones y en-
trevistar al personal administrative,
el grupo present su dictamen: el
program de Tecnologia M6dica de
la Universidad de la Zona del Ca-
nal podria ser un modelo para pro-
gramas similares en los Estados
Unidos.


El grupo qued6 impresionado con
la armonia que existed entire el per-
sonal de la Universidad y el Hospi-
tal, con la calidad superior de las
facilidades de ensefianza, y con la
preparaci6n del cuerpo docente. Hi-
cieron menci6n del hecho de que la
capacitaci6n acad6mica que se ob-
tiene en la Universidad es mAs exi-
gente que la que actualmente exige
el NAACLS, que acredita los pro-
gramas de salubridad. La Universi-
dad require un minimo de 27 horas
de quimica, 28 horas de biologia,
8 horas de fisica, y 5 horas de mate-
mntica, mientras que los requeri-
mientos minimos del NAACLS son
16 horas de quimica y 16 horas de
biologia.
El President del Departamento
de Ciencias Naturales DeWitt Myers
explica que la Universidad es dema-
siado pequefia para dictar cursos se-
parados para los diferentes progra-
mas de salubridad. Asi, el program


de tecnologia medica y el program
de premedicina estAn combinados
en uno solo, y por lo tanto los estu-
diantes salen preparados para ingre-
sar a una escuela de medicine.
Los resultados de los eximenes
en series ban demostrado que la ca-
lidad superior del program esti
dando buenos resultados. A partir
de 1965, 99 por ciento o 90 de 91
estudiantes en tecnologia madica de
la Universidad de la Zona del Ca-
nal pasaron dichos exAmenes, mien-
tras que en los Estados Unidos el
n'mero de estudiantes aprobados
fue de 75 a 80 por ciento.
Los estudiantes que complete los
trabajos del curso aqui, recibirAn su
adiestramiento practice en el Hos-
pital Gorgas o en uno de los 25 hos-
pitales en los Estados Unidos con
que la Universidad estA afiliada. Los
estudiantes pueden solicitar que su
adiestramiento final se realice en
cualquier hospital en los Estados
Unidos.

La Universidad Nova, de Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, acreditada por
la Asociaci6n Surefia, estA ofrecien-
do a los residents locales la opor-
tunidad de obtener su grado de
bachiller y de maestria en ciencias
con especializaci6n en justicia cri-
minal.
En vez de ir los estudiantes a la
universidad, la universidad viene a
los estudiantes, que son dispuestos
en grupos regionales. Los cursos son
ofrecidos en una series de reuniones
que tendran lugar cada segundo fin
de semana para el grado de bachi-
Iler y cada tercer fin de semana
para el grado de maestria. Cada
Area de studio puede ser cubierto
en cuatro sesiones de fines de se-
mana, y cuando terminen estas se-
siones los estudiantes tendrAn 6 ho-
ras de cr6dito para ganar su grado.
Los maestros, que proceden de
todas parties de los Estados Unidos
son experts en el sistema de jus-
ticia criminal y dirigirAn las discu-
siones durante la clase, empleando
un esfuerzo especial para integrar
lo prActico con lo te6rico.
En septiembre se organize el pri-
mer grupo de estudiantes que estu-
dia para obtener su grado de maes-
tria, seguido por el segundo grupo
en noviembre. En estos moments


se estAn aceptando solicitudes para
un tercer grupo, que empezara su
primer semestre en un future
pr6ximo.
Tambi6n estAn abiertas las ma-
triculas para la primera sesi6n de
classes para el grado de bachiller,
que empezarA en enero. Cualquier
estudiante que tenga un grado aso-
ciado en letras o 2 afios de studio
universitario bAsico puede ingresar
al program.

Ejecutivo de Scouts fue Ascendido


J. Ronald Tyson, Ejecutivo de
los Muchachos Exploradores loca-
les, ha sido ascendido a la posi-
ci6n de Director de Servicios de
Apoyo para el Consejo de Florida
del Norte, Jacksonville, Florida.
Sus deberes incluirin proveer im-
pulso a la division de Exploradores
del consejo, promoter campamentos
y asumir los deberes de administra-
dor. Su consejo abarca la posici6n
geogrAfica que include Gainesville,
Ocala, Cedar Key, Live Oak, Saint
Augustine y Jacksonville.
Durante los 4 afios que vivi6 en
la Zona del Canal, Tyson demostr6
liderato cuando efectu6 mejoras al
"Campamento Chagres", y transfor-
m6 la operaci6n de la oficina en un
centro modern de autoservicio. Ini-
ci6 el primer program de campa-
mentos diurnos para Lobatos, en la
Zona del Canal, y ayud6 a fortale-
cer y estimular a la Asociaci6n de
Presidentes Exploradores como fuer-
za viva del program de Explorado-
res. El Scout-Q-Rama annual, que ha
sido deleite de todos los j6venes de
las tres asociaciones de Explorado-
res en el Istmo, al igual que toda
la comunidad, tambi6n fue iniciado
bajo su liderato. Tyson particip6 ac-
tivamente en la Liga de la Armada
y actualmente integra el comit6 eje-
cutivo de dicha organizaci6n. Tam-
bien particip6 en proyectos religio-
sos y civicos, especialmente en be-

neficio de los Indios Cunas, de las
Islas de San Blas.
Tyson partira del Istmo a comien-
zos de enero para hacerse car-
go de sus deberes en Florida. Sus
dos hijos mayors asisten a la uni-
versidad en los Estados Unidos y
su hija, Amy, cursa studios en el
tercer grado de la Escuela Prima-
ria de Balboa. La Sra. Tyson, que
es maestra en la Escuela Primaria
de Curundi, permanecerA en el
Istmo hasta que termine el afio
escolar.

Desde 1973, la Compafiia y el
Gobierno y los residents han redu-
cido la iluminaci6n decorative na-
videfia como contribuci6n hacia la
conservaci6n de energia.

Es de conocimiento de todos,
que la crisis de energia todavia no
ha pasado, y que la necesidad de
conservar energia continue; no obs-
tante, tambien se sabe que el con-
- sumo de energia para el aire acon-
S. - dijcionado y para otros fines es mu-
cho mayor que lo que se usa para
la iluminaci6n.
El Gobernador ha autorizaao el
uso limitado de iluminaci6n decora-
tiva en el interior y exterior de las
unidades de la Compaiiia y del
Gobierno y ha hecho sugerencias si-
milares a los residents. Se insta a
todos compensar cualesquiera exhi-
biciones iluminadas que tengan me-
diante la reducci6n igual o mayor
de electricidad cuando estas luces
