Chemicals To Be Used in Gatun Lake


In Attempt To Control Aquatic Weeds


Chemical, biological and mechan-
ical methods of controlling aquatic
weeds in the Panama Canal and
Gatun Lake are being studied and
evaluated.
In January, a variety of chemical
control agents will be placed at
various locations throughout Gatun
Lake.
The test areas will be marked by
small, white floating blocks of wood
which should not be removed or
tampered with as test results de-
pend upon observations and sam-
pling at the sites.
Anyone seen vandalizing the
markers should be reported to the
.Canal Zone Police.


The chemicals being used are not
harmful to humans or to the fish
and animal population of Gatun
Lake.
The Canal organization's program
to control aquatic weeds has been
effective for many years but recently
the growth of weeds began to out-
strip control efforts.
The problem could seriously
affect Canal operations and the
weeds encroaching upon the channel
could affect the intake systems of
transiting ships.
The weeds also are a problem to
residents of small Panamanian com-
munities located around Gatun


Lake, and have affected leisure time
activities since many lake areas can
no longer be used for fishing, water
skiing and other recreational activi-
ties.
It is hoped that test results will
provide information that will result
in an improved aquatic weed con-
trol program, eventually diminishing
the weed growth and eliminating
hazards to small boat channels,
water intake systems of transiting
ships and hydraulic systems of the
locks.
The Dredging Division has pri-
mary responsibility for control of
aquatic weeds and is supported by
other divisions in its efforts.

Sheep Herding a Money Saver

For Health Bureau's Hospitals


Mary may have had a little lamb,
but Gorgas Hospital has a whole
flock of sheep. Eighteen, to be
exact, and they are kept in a field
at the Corozal Veterinary Hospital.
The sheep are used as a kind of
living blood bank for the Gorgas
Hospital Laboratory. A unit of blood
is taken from two of the sheep each
week by Medical Technician Luisa
Iglesias. It is used in preparing
about 1,000 blood agar plates,
which in turn are used in laboratory
tests to identify specific micro-
organisms such as streptococcus
from human throat cultures.
Agar plates are available from
medical supply houses in the
United States, but at 50 cents
apiece the cost is about double
what it costs Gorgas to make
enough for itself and Coco Solo
Hospital. In addition, the problem
of breakage in shipping is avoided;
and perhaps more importantly, there
is the advantage of using fresh
blood, which is less, likely to be
traumatized in shipping and thus
give false positive results.
The sheep are well taken care of
by Corozal Veterinary Hospital em-
ployees, and before Luisa draws
blood from a sheep she takes a
hematocrit; a test that tells her if
the sheep is anemic. The sheep are
used in a cycle, a different pair
each week, which also lessens the
chances of anemia.
It would be an impossible task
for a 100-pound young, woman to
draw blood from a 110-pound sheep
were if not for the volunteer help
Luisa gets from two patients from
the Canal Zone Mental Health
Center. The men hold the sheep


still while Luisa clips off a patch of
wool below the ear, disinfects the
area to prevent contamination of
the blood, and quickly and effi-
ciently draws out 500 cc's.
Luisa has been with the Health
Bureau only about 6 months, and
admits she was afraid at first, to
tackle the sheep assignment. But
her love of animals overcame her
fear, and she handles the job now
with confidence.

Garden Club To Meet

At Governors House
The Canal Zone Garden Club
will meet at the Governor's House
at 9:30 a.m. on December 9. Mrs.
H. R. Parfitt will show the lovely
gardens which surround her home.
All garden lovers are invited, but

Note that this month's meeting
is on the second Friday instead of

Dr. Jaques M. P. Wilson will be

Dr. Wilson is well known in
academic circles for-his scholarly
articles on Latin America and the
teaching of Spanish and Portuguese

the Fullbright Commission for the
exchange of Latin American and
North American scholars. He is cur-
rently on a tour of various countries
in Central and South America to
interview interested candidates for
study at the University of Miami.

To Begin at Balboa 'Y'
An Assertiveness Training Work-

Accepting (Some) Gifts Is a No No


Better look twice at that gift
horse. Or any other gift, for that
matter.
Panama Canal employees are re-
minded that as Federal employees
they are prohibited from accepting
gifts, favors or anything of signifi-
cant monetary value from persons
with whom they have official
dealings.
According to Panama Canal reg-
ulations, an employee is not per-
mitted to solicit or accept, directly
or indirectly, any gift, gratuity,
favor, entertainment, loan, or any
other thing of monetary value from
a person with whom he or she has,
oris seeking to obtain, contractual
or other business or financial rela-
tions with the Panama Canal; con-
ducts operations or activities that


are regulated by the Panama Canal;
or has interests that may be sub-
stantially affected by the perform-
ance or nonperformance of his
official duty.
Penalties for the offense of ac-
cepting or soliciting of bribes or
accepting of gifts by employees
when related to the employee's
official or employment status (this
also applies to acceptance by mem-
bers of the employee's immediate
family) range from a written re-
primand to dismissal of the em-
ployee.
In the course of a duty assign-
ment, such as a Canal transit, an
employee properly may accept food
and nonalcoholic refreshment. The
acceptance, however, of bottled
goods either sealed or unsealed is
against regulations.

Getting Stuck With 'Phoney' Money

Increases With Holiday Shopping


This is the time of year when
great sums of money change hands.
Canal Zone residents and persons
who handle money in their daily
work, particularly, are asked to be
on the alert for "phoney" money.
Approximately 40 counterfeit bills,
including denominations from $5 to
$100, have been turned over to the
Canal Zone Police this year.
Cashiers at banks and business
establishments in the Canal Zone
are familiar with techniques of iden-
tifying counterfeit bills and persons
seldom have to worry about re-
ceiving bad money when cashing
their checks or when receiving
change after making purchases.
However, authorities urge that
money received from all other
sources be examined carefully be-
fore leaving the spot where it was
received.
There is a distinct difference be-
tween the feel of even high-quality
counterfeit money when it is handled
and a legitimate bill. When a bill
feels different to the touch, it should
he examined closely and compared
with a genuine bill. The best way
to detect a counterfeit bill is by
folding a genuine bill and a suspect
counterfeit bill exactly in half and
placing the two side by side. One
can see the difference immediately.
The portrait on a bill is another
aid. No matter how old, the genuine
bill will have a portrait that is sharp,
outstanding and almost three di-
mensional. On a bogus bill, it will
be flat and dull. The points of the
seals on good bills are sharp and


well defined while those on the
"phoney" money are dull and
broken off. Also, the serial numbers
on counterfeit bills frequently are
uneven.
It is not true that bogus money
can be detected by rubbing the bill
on white paper to see if green ink
comes off. Green ink comes off on
both real and fake bills. Real money
has blue filers imbedded in the
paper and bogus money usually
does not.
Possession of counterfeit money
is a violation of the law. Money
suspected as counterfeit should bec
turned over to the Canal Zone
Police for verification immediately.
If it is real, it will be returned to
the owner. Counterfeit money is.
turned over to the U.S. Secret
Service.
Anyone finding himself in pos-
session of a bogus bill should co-
operate with authorities to assist in
the investigation to trace the origin
of the counterfeit money.


Xmas Mailing Hints

Christmas mailing usually means
long waiting lines unless some posi-
tive action is taken early in the
mailing season. First, of course, the
proper gift must be selected. After
the selection, don't delay mailing.
Wrap packages well before mailing.
The post office will gladly provide
helpful hints on proper wrapping
and packaging so your gifts will
arrive at their destinations in good
condition.

Diablo Toyland

Extends Hours

The Diablo Toyland will be open
every day from now through De-
cember 24 to give shoppers a full
opportunity to make their pre-
Christmas buys. On Mondays,
Thursday, and Fridays Toyland will
be open from 1 to 8 p.m., and on
Tuesday, Wednesdays, Saturdays
and Sundays, from 9:30 a.m. to
5:30 p.m.
Coco Solo Toyland will continue
to operate the same hours as the
department store until Decem-
ber 19, when Toyland hours will
extend fiom 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
through December 23.
On Saturday, December 24, both
toylands will be open from 9 a.m.:
to 4 p.m.
Shoppers should note that they
can use their charge, accounts and
personal checks to pay for mer-

Will the Real Kathy Jorgensen Please Stand Up?

Kathy Jorgensen is a registered
nurse in the Intensive Care Unit
at Gorgas Hospital. She is a wife
and mother of four young children
and an active member of her
church. She is actively involved in
a Transactional Analysis group and
has a special interest in Behavioral
Psychology. She is a licensed pilot
currently working on a 40-hour
minimum requirement in instrument
flight training before flying her
plane to California in February to
take the examination to qualify in
instrument flying. If Kathy sounds
like a very busy woman its because
she is-doing a variety of activities
matched by her numerous talents
and lively enthusiasm.
A native of Scotia, Calif., Kathy
was graduated from Costa Mesa
High School and first came to the
Canal Zone in 1965 for a brief
visit. She returned the following
year with her mother Frances Hoy
Pringle, who was a nurse at Gorgas
from 1966 to 1973. She attended
Canal Zone College one semester
and then went back to California
and to the College of San Matco
and in 1971 earned an associate
degree in nursing from the College
of the Redwoods in Eureka.
As a member of the Orange
County CORE Chapter in the mid
1960s, Kathy took part in a protest
against the labor practices of a
well-known chain store in Santa
Ana. At one point when the pro-
testers dwindled, a call went out to
students at Santa Ana College to


join the picketers. Among those who
answered . was Peter Jorgensen, a
ministry student who was paying
his way by giving guitar lessons.
The picket line meeting with Kathy
blossomed into a romance and they
were married. Peter changed his
major and instead of a Presbyterian
minister, he became a civil engi-
neer. They came to the Canal Zone
in 1974 when he was employed
with the Construction Division.
Because .traveling and meeting
people are important to the Jorgen-
sens, about 2 years ago they decided
to learn to fly. They went to ground
school from October to December
and the following May Kathy had
her first flying lesson. Though she
admits to being very nervous in the
beginning, the first lesson went fine,
the second was fun, and on the
third she was sold on it.
Despite the "uneasiness" of her
instructor, Kathy made her solo
flight 2 months before the arrival
of her fourth child, startling airport
personnel as she flew from Gamboa
to David, to Ocu, to France Field,
making a perfect landing at Gam-
boa, just before dark. Her examina-
tion for private pilot's license had
to be postponed for 2 weeks when
the baby came the day before the
scheduled exam.
The Jorgensens bought a four-
passenger Cessna-172 in August
1975 and with Kathy at the con-
trols have made several triIp on the
Isthmus. Last year, they flew to the
United States, taking along their


two youngest children Katura, 2,
and Shirin, 8 months. (Michael and
Kelinda, who were then 7 and 5,
later flew commercial to California
to join the family.) They spent
7 weeks flying cross country and
back east. Baby bottles and diaper-
ing were the responsibility of the
one who was not at the controls.
Their experiences on this trip
ranged from annoying to comical to
harrowing. One example was being
met by a brass band and just
missing being fired on by Nicara-
guan artillery in a 17-gun salute as
they were landing at the Managua
Airport. The reception, of course,
was not for them but for a delega-
tion of foreign officials arriving for
a conference.
With the written exam for the
instrument licensing successfully
behind her, she plans to go to
Riverside, Calif., to be examined
for the flight part of the test and,
hopefully, also obtain an instructors
rating so she can teach flying here.
Going along for the ride will be a
friend with her 2-year-old son, and
a Gorgas doctor who has expressed
his desire to go too.
Kathy is a member of the Morn-
ing Lights, a Bahai singing group
and sings at the Bahai Temple every
Sunday with the choir. Her husband
composes most of the music that the
quartet sings in English and
Spanish.

Hanukkah Fete

Starts Sunday

At Sundown

At sundown on Sunday, Jews
around the world will observe the
first day of the 8-day "Feast of
Dedication," better known as Ha-
nukkah. Like many other Jewish
festivals, this one celebrates the
achievement of freedom by the
Jewish people..
The story of Hanukkah is found
in the Old Testament Apocryphal
books of the Maccabees. It tells of
the 3-year struggle by the Jews in
Judea to rid themselves of the rule
of the Syrian tyrant Antiochus, who
had desecrated the Temple in Je-
rusalem in 168 B.C. by instituting
a pagan cult to himself there and
ordering the Jews to bow down and
worship him.
Under the leadership of Juddah
Maccabee, the Jews defeated An-
tiochus and cleansed the Temple of
Syrian idols so that services could
be resumed. When they searched
for uncontaminated oil to use in
kindling the Temple's "Eternal
Light," they found only one vial,
enough for 1 day. But miraculously
the oil lasted for 8 days, until the
priests could prepare more.

Jews call attention to this mira-
cle today by lighting one candle of
the Hanukkah candelabra, the Me-
norah, each evening of the celebra-
tion until all eight lighted candles
stand together. The holiday is a
happy time, when gifts are ex-
changed and centuries-old games
are played.
Hanukkah will be celebrated in
the Canal Zone at the USO-J with
the lighting of the eighth candle at
5 p.m. on Sunday, December 11.
The community is welcome to join
in the party and dancing and to see
the acting out of the Hanukkah
story by local children.

Day Classic Swim Meet sponsored by the Division of Schools. Swimmers
from both sides of the Isthmus participated in the event held recently at
the Balboa Pool. In the boys' competition, Chris set a new record in
the 100-yd breaststroke (1:1 and 14 years) and Ricky Kelly tied the old
record in the 100-yd freestyle. Vega was the only girl to set a new record
in the girls' competition. Medals to the first three winners in each of the
swimming events were presented by Robert Barnes, supervisor of the
Curundu Pool.

Girl's Softball

League Taking

Registrations

Registration for the Pacific Girl's
Softball League is currently in
progress. All girls between 9 and 19
on April 1, 1978, who attend Canal
Zone schools, elementary through
college, are eligible to play in this
fast pitch league. There is a regis-
tration fee of $5.
Tryouts will be held at 9 a.m.,
tomorrow, December 3, for those
14 to 19 and at 10:30 a.m. for those
9 to 13 at the girls field at the rear
of the Balboa Heights Railroad
Station, on the highway side of the
men's softball park.
Managers and coaches are des-
perately needed for the juniors. At
this point there will be only three
junior teams instead of the usual
five due to lack of managers. This
will cut down on the number of
junior girls able to participate.
Anyone who can offer managing
or coaching assistance or in need
of further information may call

4:30 p.m.

'Purple Dragon'Parade

Thru Balboa Tomorrow
A parade in honor of "The Purple
Dragon" will begin at 10 a.m. to-
morrow in front of the Chase Man-
hattan Bank on Balboa Road, turn
on to Roosevelt Avenue, then turn
again at the fire station and head
up the Prado to Stevens Circle. At
the circle, children may have their
pictures taken with the purple
dragon or buy T-shirt transfers of a
lazy dragon. The Abou Saad clowns
also will be there to entertain the
children.
"The Purple Dragon," a semi-
musical, will run from today to
December 17 with curtain time at
7:30 p.m. There will be matinees
at 2 p.m. on December 3, 4, 10
and 11.

finds time to read to her children,
takes them swimming and bike
riding and makes their favorite
dishes. For her accomplishments,
she gives credit to her husband
who does more than his share of
parenting. And though a day in her
life may seem like being caught in
a whirlwind, she has a compulsion
to do more. She would like to go on
and be commercial pilot, go into
psychiatric nursing, work as a flying
mlrsc. "My grandmother is 91, men-
tfilly alert and healthy. If I can
live to be her age, I hope to do all
of these things," says Kathy con-
fidently.

nicos para controlar las algas en la
via acuitica y el Lago Gatdn.
En enero, una variedad de agen-
tes quimicos de control serAn colo-
cados en distintas ubicaciones por
todo el Lago Gatimn.
Las Areas de prueba estarAn mar-
cadas con bloques de madera blan-
cos flotantes que no deberin ser
quitados o movidos, ya que los re-
sultados de esta prueba dependent
de lo que se pueda observer y ana-
lizar en los sitios.
Cualquier persona que presence
actos de vandalism debera dar par-
te de ello a la Policia de la Zona
del Canal.


Los ingredients quimicos que
son usados no son dafiinos a los
humans ni a los peces y animals
del Lago Gatmn.
El program de control de algas
de la empresa canalera ha sido efec-
tivo durante muchos afios, pero re-
cientemente el crecimiento de las
algas ha aventajado los esfuerzos
de control.
El problema podria afectar seria-
mente las operaciones del Canal y
las algas en la part navegable
del Canal podrian afectar los sis-
temas de inducci6n de agua de los
barcos que transitan por la via
acuAtica.
Las algas tambien presentan un
problema para los residents de las
pequefias comunidades panamefias
ubicadas a orillas del Lago Ga-


t6n, y han afectado las activida-
des de recreo, ya que muchas Areas
del lago ya no pueden ser usadas
para la pesca, el esqui y otras acti-
vidades.
Se espera que los resultados de
las pruebas proporcionen informa-
ci6n que pueda emplearse en un
mejor program de control de al-
gas, eventualmente disminuyendo
su proliferaci6n y eliminando los
riesgos para las embarcaciones pe-
quefias, los sistemas de inducci6n
de agua de los barcos que transitan
el Canal y los sistemas hidrAulicos
de las esclusas.
La Division de Dragado tiene la

Rebaino de Ovejas Ahorra Dinero

A Hospitales de la Zona del Canal


Maria tal vez tenia un corderito,
pero el Hospital Gorgas tiene un
rebafto de ovejas. Dieciocho para
ser exacto, y se encuentran en un
campo del Hospital de Animales en
Corozal.
Las ovejas son utilizadas como
una especie de banco vivo de san-
gre para beneficio del laboratorio
del Hospital Gorgas. Cada semana
la T6cnica Medica Luisa Iglesias
saca una unidad de sangre de dos
de las ovejas. Se usa para preparar
1,000 places agar de sangre, que a
su vez son usadas para efectuar
pruebas en el laboratorio a fin de
identificar microorganisms especifi-
cos tal como estreptococo de los
cultivos tomados de la garganta
humana.
Las places agar pueden adquirir-
se en empresas de suministros mB-
dicos en los Estados Unidos, pero a
50 centavos cada una, el costo es
dos veces mAs de lo que le cuesta
al Gorgas preparar la cantidad sufi-
ciente para su propio uso y el del
.Hospital Coco Solo. AdemAs, se
evita el problema de rompimiento
durante el embarque; y tal vez mAs
important, existe la ventaja de
usar sangre fresca, que es menos
probable que se traumatice durante
el embarque y airojase resultados
positives falsos.
Las ovejas son bien cuidadas por
los empleados del Hospital de Ani-
males en Corozal, y .antes de sacar
la sangre de las ovejas, Luisa toma
un hemat6crito, una prueba que le
dirA si la oveja estA an6mica. Las
ovejas son usadas en ciclo, un par
diferente cada semana, que tambien
disminuye el riesgo de anemia.
Seria una tarea impossible para
una joven de 100 libras sacar sangre
de una oveja de 110 libras, si no
fuera por la ayuda de voluntaries
Sque Luisa obtiene de dos pacientes


del Centro de Salud Mental de la
Zona del Canal. Los hombres sos-
tienen con firmeza a la oveja mien-
tras Luisa recorta un pedazo de la
lana de la parte inferior de la oreja,
desinfecta el Area para evitar conta-
minaci6n de la sangre, y rApidamen-
te y con eficacia saca 500 centime-
tros de sangre.
Luisa es empleada de la Direc-
ci6n de Salubridad desde hace
6 meses, y admite que al comienzo
tenia miedo de enfrentarse a la ta-
rea de las ovejas. Pero su carifio por
los animals venci6 su miedo, y
ahora desempefia su tarea con
confianza.

Cuidadito con los Billetes Falsos

Durante Esta Temporada Navidenia


A media que se aproximan las
fiestas navidefias y mayor cantidad
de dinero cambia de manos se insta
a los residents de la Zona del
Canal y particularmente a las per-
sonas que manejan efectivo en su
trabajo diario, que esten alerta con
respect a los billetes "falsos".'
Aproximadamente 40 billetes fal-
sos en denominaciones de $5 a $100
han sido entregadas a la Policia de
la Zona del Canal este aio.
Los cajeros de los bancos y esta-
blecimientos comerciales en la Zona
del Canal estAn familiarizados con
las t6cnicas que se emplean para
identificar los billetes falsos y las
personas no tienen por quA 'preocu-
parse de que recibirAn un billete
falso cuando cobren sus cheques o
reciben cambio despuds de hacer
compras.
Sin embargo, las autoridades
aconsejan que el dinero que se re-
cibe de otras fuentes sea examinado
cuidadosamente antes de abandonar
el lugar donde lo recibi6. Hay una
diferencia caracteristica al tacto
ain entire los billetes falsos de alta
calidad y los billetes legitimos.
Cuando un billete se siente diferen-
te al tacto, se deberA examiner de-
tenidamente y coinparandolo con un
billete genuine. La mejor manera
de detectar un billete falso es do-
blando un billete genuine y un bi-
ilete que se sospecha de ser falso
justamente por la mitad y colocando
uno al lado del otro. Se puede ver
la diferencia inmediatamente.
El retrato en el billete es otra
clave. No importa cuan viejo sea,
el billete genuine tendra el retrato
'claro, sobresaliente y casi tridimen-
sional. En un billete falso, apare-
cerA sin lustre, opaco. Los puntos
en los sellos en los billetes buenos
son claros y bien definidos mien-
tras que los que Ilevan los billetes


falsos son opacos y quebrados. Ade-
mAs, los n6imeros de series en los
billetes falsos con frecuencia estAn
disparejos.
No es cierto que un billete falso
puede detectarse tan s61o frotando
el billete en papel blanco para ver
si sale la tinta verde. La tinta verde
se borra tanto en los billetes buenos
como en los falsos. El billete legi-
timo tiene fibras azules en el papel
y el billete falso usualmente no lo
tiene.
La posesi6n de billetes falsos es
una violaci6n de la ley. Billetes que
se sospechen de ser falsos deberan
ser entregados a la Policia de la
Zona del Canal para su verificaci6n
inmediata. Si es legitimo, sera de-
vuelto a su duefio. Los billetes fal-
sos son enviados al Servicio Secreto
de los Estados Unidos.
Cualquier persona que tenga en
su posesi6n billete que se sospeche
de ser falso debe cooperar con las
autoridades en la investigaci6n a fin
de descubrir la fuente de los billetes
falsos.

Una pregunta comun que se hace
durante esta 6poca del afio es si es
ms barato enviar las tarjetas de
Navidad en sobres abiertos. Cues-
tan lo mismo cerrado o abierto. So-
bres cerrados de tamafio reglamen-
tario son mas baratos de procesar
y no sufren dafio tan fAcil como los
articulos que van abiertos. Es de
gran ayuda tambi6n si las tarjetas
son agrupadas como areas o de pri-
mera clase. Ademas grandes canti-
dades para ciertas ciudades o esta-
dos deberAn colocarse en bultos se-
parados. Estos pasos ayudaran en
el procesamiento de la correspon-
dencia mAs rapido para su envio.

Un cheque por la suma de $680 para el program de Judo en la Universi-
dad de la Zona del Canal es presentado por Robert Schultz, izquierda, al
Dr. Kenneth E. Lake, subrector de la universidad, mientras William
O'Sullivan y el Dr. Michael Smith, derecha, observan satisfechos. La

dente del club 14 de los 15 afios de su existencia. O'Sullivan es uno de los

nes, jueves, y viernes la Jugueteria
abrirA de 1 a 8 p.m., y los martes,
miircoles, sibados y domingos, de
9:30 a.m. a 5:30 p.m.
La Jugueteria de Coco Solo abri-
ra durante las horas regulars del
almacen hasta el 19 de diciembre,
fecha en que se extenderAn las ho-

Kathy Jorgensen abastece su avi6n con gasoline despu6s de un vuelo.


Kathy Jorgensen es enfermera ti-
tulada y trabaja en la Unidad de
Cuidado Intensivo del Hospital
Gorgas. Es esposa y madre de cua-
tro pequefiuelos y miembro muy ac-
tiva de su iglesia. Participa energi-
camente en un grupo de AnAlisis
Transaccional y profesa un interns
especial en la Psicologia que trata
sobre el Comportamiento. Ha obte-
nido una licencia que la acredita
como piloto y actualmente trabaja
con esmero para satisfacer el reque-
rimiento minimo de 40 horas de en-
trenamiento de vuelo con instru-
mento antes de poder pilotear su
avi6n hasta California en febrero
para tomar su prueba de vuelo con
instrument. Si Kathy parece ser
una mujer muy atareada es porque
lo es-desempefia una variedad de
actividades que son igualadas s6lo
por sus numerosos talentos y vivaz
entusiasmo.
Oriunda de Scotia, California,
Kathy egres6 de la Escuela Secun-
daria de Costa Mesa y vino por pri-
mera vez a la Zona del Canal en
1965 para una visit breve. Regres6
el pr6ximo aiio con su madre Fran-
ces Hoy Pringle, que fue enfermera
en el Gorgas desde 1966 hasta 1973.
Curs6 studios pot un semestre en
la Universidad de la Zona del Canal
y despues regres6 a California a in-
gresar a la Universidad de San
Mateo y en 1971 obtuvo su titulo
asociado en enfermeria de la Uni-
versidad de Redwoods en Eureka.
Como miembro del Capitulo
CORE del Condado Orange a me-
diados de la decada de 1960, Kathy
tom6 part en una protest contra
las practices obreras de una cadena
de almacenes muy conocida en
Santa Ana. En un punto cuando los


que protestaban iban disminuyendo
en nfmero, se hizo un llamado a
los estudiantes de la Universidad de
Santa Ana a unirse a los huelguis-
tas. Entre los que respondieron a
este llamado figuraba Peter Jorgen-
sen, un estudiante de teologia que
se costeaba sus studios dando cla-
ses de guitarra. El encuentro con
Kathy en la linea de piquete flore-
ci6 en un romance y se casaron.
Peter cambi6 su especialidad y en
vez de Ministro Presbiteriano, se
gradu6 de ingeniero civil. Vinieron
a la Zona del Canal en 1974 donde
obtuvo empleo con la Divisi6n de
Construcci6n.
Viajar y conocer a otras gentes
son importantes para los Jorgensen,
y hace 2 afios decidieron aprender a
volar. Ingresaron a la escuela te-
rrestre y tomaron classes desde octu-
bre hasta diciembre y en mayo del
pr6ximo aiio, Kathy tom6 su prime-
ra lecci6n de vuelo. Aunque ella
admite que estaba muy nerviosa al
comienzo, la primera lecci6n le fue
muy bien, la segunda fue divertida
y ya en la tercera estaba convencida
de que le gustaba.
A pesar de la "inquietud" de su
instructor, Kathy realize su primer
vuelo sola 2 meses antes de la lle-
gada de su cuarto hijo, para sorpre-
sa del personal del aeropuerto, vo16
desde Gamboa hasta David, a Oc6,
y France Field, efectuando un ate-
rrizaje perfect en Gamboa, poco
antes de caer la noche. Su prueba
para obtener su licencia de piloto
privado tuvo que ser pospuesta por
2 semanas por motive de la llegada
del beb6 el dia antes de la prueba.
En agosto de 1975 los Jorgensen
compraron un avi6n Cessna 172 de
cuatro pasajeros y con Kathy a los


controls efectuaron un nimero de
viajes por el Istmo. El afio pasado,
volaron hasta los Estados Unidos,
llevando con ellos a sus dos hijos
mAs pequefios, Katura y Shirin, de
2 afios y 8 meses de edad. (Michael
y Kelinda, entonces de 7 y 5 afios
de edad, volaron en avi6n comer-
cial hasta California para reunirse
con su familiar ) Pasaron 7 semanas
volando a travys del pais y a la costa
este. Las mamaderas y la muda de
pafiales eran responsabilidad del
que no estaba a los controls. Sus
experiencias en este viaje fluctuaban
desde fastidioso hasta c6mico a ho-
rripilante. Un ejemplo de esto fue
cuando fueron recibidos por una
banda y por poco fueron blanco de
una descarga de artilleria del ejer-
cito nicaragiiense durante un saludo
de 17 cafionazos en los moments
que aterrizaban en el Aeropuerto
de Managua. La recepci6n, desde
luego, no era en honor de ellos, sino
para una delegaci6n de funcionarios
extranjeros que Ilegaban para una
conferencia.
Habiendo pasado felizmente el
examen escrito para la obtenci6n de
su licencia de instruments, ahora
tiene planes de ir a Riverside, Cali-
fornia, para tomar el examen de
vuelo y abriga la esperanza, de
obtener tambien su calificaci6n de
instructor para poder dar classes de
vuelo aqui. La acompafiarA en el
viaje una amiga con su hijo de
2 aios de edad, y un doctor del
Gorgas tambi6n ha expresado'deseos
de ir.

Judios Celebran

Fiesta Hannukah

Desde el Domingo
A la puesta del sol el domingo,
los judios alrededor del mundo ob-
servaran el primer dia de los 8 dias
que componen la "Fiesta de Dedi-
caci6n", mejor conocida como "ha-
nukkah". Al igual que las otras fies-
tas judias, en 6sta se festeja la libe-
raci6n del pueblo judio.
La historic de Hanukkah puede
encontrarse en los Libros Ap6crifos
de los Macabeos del Viejo Testa-
mento. En ella relatan sobre los
3 afios de lucha por los judios en
Judea para librarse del dominio del
tirano sirio Antioco, quien habia
profanado el Templo en Jerusal6n
en el afio 168 antes de Cristo, ins-
tituyendo alli un culto pagano a su
persona y obligando a los judios a
hacerle reverencia y adorarle.
Teniendo como lider a Juda Ma-
cabeo, los judios derrotaron a An-
tioco y purificaron el Templo de los
idolos sirios y se reanudaron los
servicios. Cuando buscaron el acei-
te purificado que se usaria para
prender la "Luz Eterna" del Tem-
plo, s61lo encontraron un frasco. Pe-
ro, milagrosamente, el aceite dur6
los 8 dias, dAndole a los sacerdotes
el tiempo necesario para preparar
mas.


Los jiodios festejan este milagro
hoy dia, dando lumbre a una vela
del candelabro Hanukkah, el Me-
norah, cada noche de la fiesta has-
ta que todas las 8 velas encendidas
est6n juntas. Esta fiesta es un tiem-
po feliz, en que hay intercambio de
regalos y juegan juegos seculares.
La fiesta de Hanukkah serA cele-
brada en la Zona del Canal en el
USO-J al encender la octava vela a
las 5 p.m. el domingo 11 de di-
ciembre. La comunidad esti bien-
venida a participar en la fiesta y en
el baile que seguirA, y ver la inter-
pretaci6n de la historic de Hanuk-
kah por los nifios de la localidad.

Un desfile en honor del Purple
Dragon (Drag6n Morado) empeza-

y espafiol que canta el cuarteto.
Volar, cantar, reunirse, con grupos
de interns especial y una madre
trabajadora, no obstante, Kathy en-
cuentra tiempo para leer cuentos a
sus hijos, los Ileva a nadar y a
montar bicicleta y les prepare sus
plates favorites. Dice que le debe
sus logros a su esposo, que desem-
pefia mis de lo que exige su fun-
ci6n de padre. Y aunque un dia en
su vida pueda parecerle como estar
presa en un torbellino, ella tiene
una compulsion dc hacer mas. Ella
tiene deseos de ser piloto de avi6n
commercial, ser enfermera de psiquia-
tria, y trahajar como enfermera vo-
ladora. "Mi abuela tiene 91 afios de
edad y es mentalmente alerta y
goza de buena salud. Si yo viviese
hasta la edad de ella, espero poder
realizar todas estas cosas", dice
Kathy con confianza.
