Company Offers Vacation Employment


To Latin American Student Dependents


The Panama Canal organiza-
tion's Latin American Student Vaca-
tion Employment Program will
begin January 3 and continue
through March 14, 1978.
In view of the reduced size of
the program, eligibility for participa-
tion in this coming year's program
will be restricted to students who
are dependents of employees of
U.S. Government agencies on the
Isthmus. Appointments made under
this year's program will be limited
to part-time, 30 hours per week.
Only full-time students are eli-
gible for the program. Secondary
school students must be graduating
seniors; university students must be
undergraduate students who will
not receive a degree at the end of
the current school year. Addi-
tionally, all students must be at
least 16 years of age at the time
of their employment.


Registration for

Apprentice Exam

Begins Monday

On November 14 the Central
Examining Office will start register-
ing interested applicants for the
annual Apprentice Examination.
The examination- will be given in
either Spanish or English at the
option of the applicant. Registration
is scheduled for Pacific side res-
idents in Building.363, Ancon from
8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to
3 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Wednesday only; and for Atlantic
side residents in Building 1004,
Cristobal from 8:30 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to
2:45 p.m. on November 14, 16,
21 and 28.
Applicants must pick up sample
questions and registration forms
prior to registration. These forms
may be obtained at Building 363,
Ancon during normal working
hours starting November 8; and at
Building 1004,-Cristobal from 8:30
to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:45 p.m.
on November 9. They will also be
available during the registration
dates outlined above. Applicants are
urged to study the sample questions
and apply only if they feel they can
correctly answer a minimum of
6 of the 10 sample questions. Regis-
tration forms must be completed hy
the applicant before appearing to
register for the tests.
In-service employees interested in
being considered non-competitively
for apprentice vacancies in July
1978 must apply as soon as possible
for the examination at the Central
Examining Office. By completing a
very short application form, appli-
cants will be scheduled by the
Central Examining Office to take a
preliminary screening examination
in the near future. Those who pass
this screening examination will then
be scheduled for the final examina-
tion. Persons who previously passed
both examinations but who were
not selected for Apprentice vacan-
cies must retake them this year.

The deadline for submission of
applications is November 21. Stu-
dents may obtain application forms
from the Personnel offices, located
in Building 366, Ancon, or Build-
ing 1105, Cristobal, or by writing
the Panama Canal Company, Per-
sonnel Bureau, Balboa Heights,
Canal Zone.


This program does not provide
for payment of per diem, meals, or
lodging. Students not residing in
Panama City or Colon will have to
make their own arrangements. Pay
for the student assistants is ex-
pected to be $2.65 an hour. Stu-
dents employed under this program
will not earn leave.


College's New Board of Trustees

Is Cross Section of Community


The newly formed Board of
Trustees of the Canal Zone College
met for the first time at the end of
October and was welcomed by
Superintendent of Schools David
A. Speir and given a tour of the
College facilities.
As the college's governing body,
the Board of Trustees has among
its duties the responsibility for im-
plementing and interpreting the
mission of the college, nominating
its chief executive officer, reviewing
and overseeing the college budget,
awarding degrees, and serving as
final arbiter in academic decisions.
The trustees serve without com-
pensation and are appointed to a
term of 3 years.
The Board consists of 11 voting
trustees appointed by the Governor
who are representative of the con-
stituency to be served by the col-
lege and one non-voting trustee
selected by the college faculty. The
12 members are: John E. Fisher,
Deputy Financial Vice President of
the Panama Canal Company; Fran-
cis O'Connor, General Manager of
the Panama Kodak Co.; Brig. Gen.
Robert B. Tanguy, Commander


U.S. Air Forces Southern Air Divi-
sion; Mary Danielson, a community
member from the Atlantic side;
Frederick R. Call, Supervisor of the
Maintenance Branch, Railroad Divi-
sion; Gerard J. Welch, Deputy Di-
rector, Executive Planning Staff;
Col. Albert L. Gore, Health Di-
rector; Brig. Gen. Richard W.
Anson, Commander, 193d Infantry
Brigade (Canal Zone); Ronald L.
Seeley, Deputy Personnel Director;
Douglas A. Elleby, Cultural Affairs
Officer, U.S. Embassy; David White,
Material Manager, Division of Store-
houses; and Dr. Michael Smith, a
Canal Zone College professor
chosen by the faculty.
At the first meeting, the Board
appointed Dr. Glen E. Murphy,
Dean of Canal Zone College, to
serve as Secretary to the group.
R. L. Seeley was chosen chairman
pro tem.
The formation of a Board of
Trustees was a requirement of the
college's accrediting body, the
Middle States Association. The
Board replaces the Canal Zone Col-
lege Advisory Council.


Final CFC Count Falls Short of Goal


When the books were closed out
on the final day of the 1978 Com-
bined Federal Campaign, figures
showed that Canal employees' con-
tributions of $288,767.57 were
10.4 percent short of their assigned
goal.
Last year employees missed their
goal by. just 2 percent.


The only two Panama Canal
bureaus to go over the top in the
annual fund drive were the Supply
and Community Service Bureau
with 119.1 percent'and the Per-
sonnel Bureau with 100.4 percent.
All but one of the non-Panama
Canal agencies that participated in

Penwomen Nat'! President


A Recognized Humanitarian


Dr. Margaret E. Hasebroock, Na-
tional President of the National
League of American Penwomen, de-
parted the Canal Zone yesterday
following a 4-day visit as guest of
the Penwomen on the Isthmus.
A former teacher and accom-
plished coloratura soprano, Dr.
Hasebroock is the wife of Nebraska
State Senator William Hasebroock.
She has the honor of being Ne-
Iraska State Mother for 1977 and
has a long list of distinguished
achievements to her credit.
She has served as National and
International President of the Gen-
eral Federation of Women's Clubs
and President of the National As-
sociation of Parliamentarians and
throughout the-years has been a
member or trustee on 32 boards of
directors:
As International President of the
Federation of Women's Clubs, she
directed the development of a
50-home village outside of Seoul,
Korea, for war widows and their
children which earned her Korea's
award for Public Welfare, that
country's highest civilian honor.
She also has sponsored voca-
tional schools in Mediterranean and
south central European countries
which are still training young
people to earn their living.
Her leadership talents have been
the inspiration for countless huma-


nitarian projects, from a Peace
Garden at the Canadian border to
the Henry Knox Building at Free-
dom Foundation in Valley Forge,
built to house the records of all
Congressional Medal of Honor
recipients.
Her efforts have been recognized
by Nebraska's Midland College,
where she received the Doctor of
Humane Letters degree, and
Wayne State Teachers College,
which presented her a Distinguished
Service Award.
While on the Isthmus, Dr. Hase-
broock met with local Penwomen
and attended the Juried Art Show
sponsored by the National League
of American Penwomen, Canal
Zone and Panama Branch, toured
places of special interest on both
sides of the Isthmus in the Canal
Zone and Panama, attended social
activities in her honor and made a
courtesy call on Gov. H. R. Parfitt.


Rate Increase for

Stamped Envelopes
The Canal Zone Postal Service
has announced that effective No-
vember 14, Canal Zone stamped
envelopes will be sold at 15 cents
each and Air Letter sheets at
5 cents each.


North Slope Oil Transits Increase


Canal Zone College cheerleader Kim Ave was crowned queen of the
18th Annual United Way Palm Bowl game at halftime ceremonies. She
was chosen on the basis of the most Palm Bowl tickets being sold by her,
her team, the CZC Devils, and her school. The Devils went on to win the
Palm Bowl game against an all-star squad from the high schools. At left

The volume of Alaska North
Slope crude oil moving through the
Panama Canal from the West Coast
of the United States to the Gulf
ports and East Coast has been in-
creasing during the first month of
the new fiscal year. The shipments
have averaged approximately 4
transits every 3 days during the
month of October, carrying about
178,000 barrels, or 25,400 tons, of
crude oil daily.
North Slope tonnage passing
through the Canal during the sec-
ond half of FY 1978 is expected
to increase, bringing the average


for the year to 250,000 barrels
daily.
At the present time a ship lo-
cated about 15 miles off the coast
of Panama in Parita Bay receives
crude oil from tankers making
round trips from Valdez to Parita
Bay. The ship then discharges the
oil into tankers sailing out of Gulf
and East Coast ports through the
Canal to Parita Bay and back
through the Canal.
This arrangement will continue
only until a more economical means
of distributing the crude oil becomes
available.

William Henry Rose



William Rose Completes


Half-Century Canal Career


William Henry Rose, retirement
clerk in the Payroll Branch since
1958, was 17 and "man of the
house" when he started to work for
the Canal 50 years ago this month
as a sales clerk in the men's fur-
nishings department in the old
commissary at Balboa. It was 1927,
times were bad and to make a dire
situation worse, his father died, his
mother was sickly and as the oldest
of eight children, he was compelled
to assume the financial and parental
responsibilities of the family, turn-
ing over all of his paychecks to his
mother.
Despite these beginnings and
seemingly overwhelming challenges
nearly every step of the way, Rose
persevered and kept faith with the
brighter side of things. In addition
to his work, he was active in his
church, wrote for the local papers,
participated in community activi-
ties and raised three children of
whom he is very proud.
Born in Paraiso, Rose attended
schools there, completed 2 years
at Canal Zone College for a teach-
er's certificate and then taught for
15 years at the La Boca Elemen-
tary School. While teaching, he
also completed courses with an in-
ternational correspondence school
in the United States and Bennett
College in Shefield, England.
Foreseeing a decrease in student
population in his area which could
lead to a reduction in the teaching
force, and not accepting completely
the emphasis being placed on stu-
dents working in the school gardens
at that time, Rose chose to change
his field and transferred to the Pay-
roll Branch in 1944 as a payroll
clerk.
Through the years he has busied
himself with a variety of avocations.
For 35 years he was a weekly con-
tributor to the former Panama
Tribune writing the popular column
"Just an Opinion." He also wrote
for the Panama American and did
reviews for the Ancon Playhouse
and Canal Zone College theatrical
productions. But journalism was
only a small part of his after-wprk

activities. From away back, he has
dabbled with painting in oils and
charcoal, becoming so skilled in
both mediums that several of his
works have been displayed at Pen-
women art shows. He also has sold
some.
An active member of his church
for many years, Rose has been a
teacher and superintendent of Sun-
day school and lay leader of Saint
Paul's in Panama City. As director
of publicity for the International
Boy Scouts, in addition to the
routine writeups and promotional
material, he completed a 10-volume
pictorial history of the organiza-
tion. More recently, he has taken
on still another interest and has
become an avid student of Black
history. Amazingly, he finds time
too for one of his favorite of all
pastimes-making model ships of
compressed cardboard,
In the rearing of their children,
Rose and his wife Cynthia have
placed a high priority on education.
As a result, all three have been
graduated from universities in the
United States. Henry and Frances,
who probably inherited a special
talent for music from their aunt
Emily Butcher, well-known Isth-
mian music instructor and choral
director, have degrees in fine arts.
Carolyn has a degree in psychology.
His family raised and 50 years
of service to the Canal, Rose at
67, has decided to retire at the end
of the year and devote more time
to painting.. "Who knows," he
chuckled, "I may be at the thresh-
hold of a new career."

Caribbean College Club

To Meet Thursday
Peggy Starkey will speak on and
demonstrate the art of Oriental
cooking at the first general meeting
of the Caribbean College Club at
7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 17,
at the Cristobal Woman's Club in
Margarita.
All members and guests are in-

The Supply Division has an-
nounced store hours for Thursday,
November 24, Thanksgiving Day
and a legal holiday in the Canal
Zone.
All food and small merchandise
operations except Balboa and Mar-
garita cafeterias, the Ancon Drive-
Inn and Pacific Luncheonette will
be closed.
The Balboa and Margarita cafe-
terias will be open for their regular
24-hour schedules. Ancon Drive-
Inn will be open from 11:30 a.m.
to 11 p.m. and the Pacific Lunch-
eonette, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Balboa and Margarita Bowl-
ing Alleys will be open from 3:30 to
11:30 p.m.
The gasoline station at La Boca
will be open from 6:30 a.m. to
1 p.m.; Gamboa from 8 a.m. to
12 noon and Margarita from 6:30 to
12 noon. Other stations will be
closed.
Theaters will operate in accord-
ance to movie schedules.
These facilities will be staffed to
provide the minimum service re-
quired by the respective commu-
nities. T
All other Supply Division activi-
ties, retail stores, townsite mer-
chandise and vending convenience
sections, warehouses, optical shops
and the Ancon Laundry will be
closed on November 24.



Heavenly Daze

Has some unexpected good news
or a sudden feeling of exhilaration
ever put you on cloud nine? There
is really such a place.
In fact, there are actually three
cloud nines. For purposes of trans-
mitting weather observations around
the world, clouds are divided by
number into three main classes, and
each class has nine different types.
The "low 9" is the cloud nine.
It's also known as the cumulonim-
bus or thunderstorm cloud. Its base
is less than 3,000 feet above ground,
but its top may be as high as
40,000 feet.
So if you were seated there, you'd
certainly be well above the din,
smog and commotion of air. You'd
be in brilliant sunlight. You'd he on
cloud nine.

ama," will be the featured speaker
at the Atlantic Christian Women's
Clul luncheon to be held from
11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Novem-
ber 15, at the Fort Davis NCO
Club.
Dottie Nelson will provide music
and Debbie Baxter will give a
demonstration of Bunka, Japanese
embroidery.

Shrine Bowl Championships


To Be Decided Tomorrow


The annual Shrine Bowl spon-
sored by the Abou Saad Shrine
Temple get. underway at 5 p.m.
tomorrow' at the Balboa Stadium
with the Canal Zone Junior Foot-
ball League championship game be-
tween the Kiwanis Kolts and the
Balboa Rams in the lightweight
class.
The second game, for the heavy-
weight championship, between the
Kiwanis Kolts and the Cristobal
Tigers or the Balboa Rams, will be
at 7 p.m.


Between the two games, at ap-
proximately 6:30 p.m., there will be
a parade of Shrine units including
clowns, motor patrol and Legion of
Honor to be followed by the pre-
sentation of the Shrine Bowl Queen
and her Court.
Cheerleaders from all 12 league
teams will be participating in the
evening's activities.
The ticket booth will be open
at 4 p.m. General admission is $1
and tickets for the covered grand-
stand are $3.

Foster Parent Training


Offered by Social Workers


The Social Work Branch of the
Division of Public Health offered
training during the month of Oc-
tober for foster parents registered
with the Canal Zone United Way-
sponsored Volunteer Foster Home
Program in the Canal Zone.
The program, entitled "Introduc-
tion to Foster Parenting," was a
series of four 2-hour sessions that
involved participants in responding
to information about the nature of
foster care and the types of situa-
tions that are apt to occur. A com-
bination of receiving necessary in-
formation and exploring personal
feelings and responses helped old,
new and prospective foster parents
develop a greater awareness of the
basic issues involved, their own


roles, and the role of the agency in
foster care.
In addition, the course helped
to prepare foster parents to work as
a team and to draw upon relation-
ships with other foster parents for
help in meeting the needs of chil-
dren placed in their care. Films,
tapes and printed material prepared
specifically for this course made
it an interesting and stimulating
experience.
The Social Work Branch will
offer the series again as the need
requires. If you have an interest in
a future course or would like to
volunteer to be a foster parent,-con-
tact the Social Work Branch of
the Division of Public Health at

Starting Times Change
The starting times of Junior-
Varsity and Varsity interscholas-
tic basketball games have been
changed.
Junior-Varsity games will begin
at 5:30 p.m. with Varsity games
starting 15 minutes after the Junior-
Varsity game ends.
All Rainbow City Varsity games
will begin at 5:30 p.m., and there,
will be no Junior-Varsity games.
These changes are necessary be-
cause of the new Panama Railroad

Lisa Schiller of Ella Beck's sixth
grade at the Diablo Elementary
School is the talented winner of the
annual essay contest sponsored by
the Inter American Women's Club.
Her essay on Christopher Colum-
bus was selected as the best of all
entries presented by sixth grade
students of the elementary schools
in the Canal Zone. Lisa, the
daughter of Maj. and Mrs. Nicholas
Schiller of Albrook, was presented
a cash prize of $25, a gold pen and
a Spanish dictionary.

of the World War II comedy

Cartographic School at Fort Clay-
ton, FAA facility in Ancon, Mira-
flores Locks, Maintenance Division
Shops, and Water Purification Plant

During the film festival, students
will see films on a broad spectrum

Scuba Course Starts
Registrations are being accepted
for the Balboa YMCA SCUBA
Course that begins Monday, No-
vember 21. Classes meet from 6 to
8:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday for 4 weeks. Partici-
pants may earn their YMCA, PADI,
and NAUI SCUBA certification.


The week is planned to give the
junior high students insight into
varied careers in their community,
and the training and education re-
quirements for the jobs.

Federal Employee Health Benefit
Program.
During open season, an em-
ployee-who is not registered in a
health benefit program may enroll,
and an employee who is already in
a program may change from one
plan to another, from self only to
self and family or a combination of
these. Employees who do not wish
to make a change in current en-
rollment need take no action during
this open season.

an instruction pamphlet, a list of

Gamboa Civic Center

Site of Annual Bazaar
The Gamboa Civic Center will
host its annual Christmas Bazaar
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday,
November 19.
Handcrafted items, such as

silver jewelry, and mola pillows,
will be offered for sale, as well as
coffee and doughnuts.
There is a small fee for reserving
a display table, and the proceeds

La formaci6n de la Junta Direc-
tiva fue un requerimiento del cuer-
po acreditado de la Universidad, la
Asociaci6n de los Estados Centra-
les. La junta reemplaza al Consejo
Asesor de la Universidad de la
Zona del Canal.


Senda Unida no ha Alcanzado Mete


Cuando cerraron los libros el il-
timo dia de la Campafia Federal
Combinada para 1978, las cifras de
$228,767.57 demostraron que las
contribuciones de los empleados del
Canal estaban 10.4 por ciento lejos
de su meta asignada.
El afio pasado los empleados de-
jaron de alcanzar su meta s6lo por
un 2 por ciento.
Las Anicas dos unidades del


Canal de PanamA que superaron la
meta en la campafia annual para re-
caudar fondos fueron la Direcci6n
de Abasto y Servicios Comunales
con 119.1 por ciento y la Direcci6n
de Personal con 100.4 por ciento.
Todas menos una de las agencies
que no forman parte del Canal de
PanamA y que participaron en la
campafia alcanzaron o excedieron

La Dra. Margaret E. Hasebroock,
President Nacional de la Liga Na-
cional de las Mujeres Eruditas Ame-
ricanas, parti6 de la Zona del Canal
ayer despu6s de una visit de 4 dias
como invitada de las Mujeres Eru-
ditas del Istmo.
Antigua maestra y soprano lirica
acreditada la Dra. Hasebroock es
esposa del Senador del Estado de
Nebraska William Hasebroock. Ella
tiene el honor de ser Madre del
Estado de Nebraska para 1977 y
cuenta en su haber con una larga
lista de logros.
Fue Presidenta Nacional e Inter-
nacional de la Federaci6n General
de Clubes de Mujeres y Presidenta
de la Asociaci6n Nacional de Par-
lamentarios y durante el transcurso
de los aiios ha sido miembro o di-
rectora de 32 juntas directives.
Como Presidenta Internacional de
la Federaci6n de Clubes de Muje-
res, estuvo a cargo del desarrollo
de una aldea de 50 casas en las
afueras de Seil, Corea, para las
viudas de soldados caidos en bata-
lla y sus hijos por lo cual se hizo
merecedora al Premio de Bienestar
Piblico de Corea, el honor civil
mas alto de ese pais. Tambi6n ha
patrocinado escuelas vocacionales
en los paises del Mediterrineo y en
Europa Central y del Sur, que to-
davia contintian preparando a los
j6venes para que se ganen su
sustento.
Su don de mando ha ser ido de
inspiraci6n a innumerables olras
humanitarias, desde un Jardin de


Paz en la frontera canadiense hasta
el Edificio Henry Knox en la Fun-
daci6n Freedoms eri Valley F6rge,
construido para alojar los registros
de los recibientes de la Medalla de
Honor del Congreso.
Sus esfuerzos han sido reconoci-
dos por la Universidad Midland de
Nebraska donde recibi6 su docto-
rado en Letras Humanas y la Uni-
versidad Pedag6gica Estatal Wayne,
que le otorg6 un Premio por Ser-
vicio Distinguido.
Durante su estadia en el Istmo,
la Dra. Hasebroock se reuni6 con
las Mujeres Eruditas locales y asis-
ti6 a la Exhibici6n de Arte patro-
cinada por la Liga Nacional de
Mujeres Eruditas Americanas, Ca-
pitulo de la Zona del Canal y
PanamA, visit lugares de inter6s
especial en ambos lados del Istmo,
en la Zona del Canal y PanamA,
asisti6 a actividades sociales en su
honor e hizo una visit de cortesia
al Gobernador H. R. Parfitt.

La animadora Kim Ave de la Universidad de la Zona del Canal fue
coronada reina del 189 Juego Anual Palm Bowl de la Senda Unida
durante las ceremonies del primer tiempo. Fue seleccionada con base en
la venta del mayor ndmero de boletos al Palm Bowl por ella, su equipo,
los Diablos de la Universidad de la Zona del Canal, y su escuela. Los
Diablos procedieron a ganar el juego Palm Bowl contra un equipo estrella
seleccionado de las escuelas secundarias. A la izquierda aparece el

El volume de petr6leo crudo
procedente de Alaska que es trans-
portado a trav6s del Canal de Pa-
nami desde los puertos de la Costa
Oeste de los Estados Unidos hasta
los puertos del Golfo y de la Costa
Este ha ido aumentando durante el
primer mes del nuevo afio fiscal.
Se ha registrado un promedio de
aproximadamente 4 trinsitos cada
3 dias durante el mes de octubre,
lo que represent unos 178,000 ba-
rriles o 25,400 toneladas diarias de
petr6leo.
Se espera que el tonelaje desde
Alaska que pasa a trav6s del Canal
durante la segunda mitad del Afio
Fiscal 1978 aumente, lo cual


aumentaria el promedio para el afio
a 250,000 barriles diaries.
En la actualidad hay un buque
ubicado a unas 15 millas de la
costa de PanamA en la Bahia de
Parita que recibe el petr6leo crudo
de los barcos cisterna que hacen el
viaje de ida y vuelta desde Valdez
hasta la Bahia de Parita. El buque
entonces descarga el petrl6eo en los
buques cisterna que harAn la trave-
sia desde los puertos del Golfo y de
la Costa Este hasta la Bahia de
Parita, y regreso por el Canal.
Este procedimiento continuarA
hasta que se encuentre un medio
mis econ6mico para distribuir el
petr6leo.

William Henry Rose



Rose Pone Fin a Carrera


De 50 Arios con el Canal


William Henry Rose, oficinista a
cargo de los trAmites de jubilaci6n
en el Ramo de Planillas desde 1958,
tenia 17 afios de edad y era el
"hombre de la casa" cuando em-
pez6 a trabajar para el Canal hace
50 afios este mes como cajero en el
departamento de ropa para hom-
bres en el antiguo comisariato de
Balboa. Era el aiio 1927, y los tiem-
pos eran dificiles y para colmo de
infortunios, su padre falleci6. Su
madre era enfermiza y, siendo el
mayor de ocho hijos, se vio obligado
a asumir las responsabilidades- de
principal proveedor y jefe de fa-
milia, entregando todo su sueldo a
su madre.
A pesar de .estos comienzos y
retos aparentemente abrumadores
casi -cada paso del camino, Rose
persever6 y mantuvo la fe, siempre
pensando en el lado bueno de las
cosas. Ademas de su trabajo, era
active en su iglesia; escribia ar-
ticulos para los peri6dicos locales,
particip6 en actividades comunales
y cri6 a tres hijos de quienes esta
muy orgulloso.
Nacido en Paraiso, Rose asisti6
a las escuelas de esa localidad, com-
plet6 2 aiios de studios en la Uni-
versidad de la Zona del Canal, re-
cibiendo un certificado acreditan-
dolo como maestro, y despubs dict6
classes durante 15 aiios en la Escue-
la Primaria de La Boca. Mientras
ensefiaba, tambibn complete cursos
por correspondencia de una escuela
international en los Estados Unidos
y de la Universidad Bennett en
Shefield, Inglaterra.
Anticipando un decrecimiento en
la poblaci6n estudiantil en su sector
que pudiera llegar a una reducci6n
en el personal docente, y no acep-
tando totalmente el 6nfasis puesto
en que los estudiantes trabajasen en
los jardines de las escuelas en ese
entonces, Rose decidi6 cambiar su
campo 3' se traslad6 al Ramo de
Planillas en 1944 como oficinista de
Planillas.
Durante el transcurso de los arios
se mantuvo ocupado con una varie-
dad de pasatiempos. Por 35 afios
fue contribuyente semanal al anti-
guo Panama Tribune escribiendo la
popular column "Just an Opinion"
(S61o una Opini6n). Tambien escri-
bi6 para el Panama American (edi-
ci6n inglesa del Panama AmBrica)
donde tambi6n fue critic teatral,
comentando en sus columns las
obras montadas en el Teatro Anc6n


y la Universidad de la Zona del
Canal. Pero el periodismo s61o ocu-
p6 una pequefia parte de sus acti-
vidades despues de horas habiles.
Desde hace afios, viene pintando
cuadros al 6leo y al carb6n, y en
ambos medios sus logros fueron
tales que varias de sus obras han
sido exhibidas en las exposiciones
de arte de las Mujeres Eruditas.
Tambi6n vendi6 algunas.
Miembro active de su iglesia du-
rante muchos aiios, Rose ha sido
maestro y director de las classes do-
minicales de religion y jefe laico de
Saint Paul's en la ciudad de Pana-
ma. Como director de publicidad
para los Muchachos Exploradores
Internacionales, ademAs de sus ar-
ticulos rutinarios y material de
promoci6n, complete una historic
grfica de 10 tomos sobre la orga-
nizaci6n. Recientemente, ha demos-
trado otro interns y ahora es un
avido estudiante de la historic del
Negro. Asombrosamente, tambi6n
halla tiempo para uno de sus pasa-
tiempos favoritos-la confecci6n de
models de barcos de cart6n com-
primido.
Durante la crianza de sus hijos,
Rose y su esposa Cynthia han pues-
to gran 6nfasis en la educaci6n.
Como resultado los tres se han gra-
duado de universidades en los Es-
tados Unidos. Henry y Frances,
quienes probablemente heredaron el
talent especial para la m6sica de
su tia Emily Butcher, muy conocida
instructor de m6sica y director
de coro, han obtenido licenciaturas
en bellas artes. Carolyn tiene su
licenciatura en psicologia.
Con su familiar ya crecida y con
50 afios de servicio con el Canal,
Rose, que tiene 67 aiios de edad,
ha decidido jubilarse a fin de afio
y piensa dedicar mas tiempo a la
pintura. "Quien sabe", dice sonrien-
do, "tal vez estoy en el umbral de
una nueva carrera.

ciado el horario de los almacenes
del Canal de Panama durante el
jueves 24 de noviembre, Dia de
Acci6n de Gracias.
Ese dia cerrarin todos los alma-
cenes, incluyendo los que tienen
secciones de maquinas expendedo-
ras de mercancias y alimentos en
las comunidades, dep6sitos, tiendas
de 6ptica y la Lavanderia de Anc6n.
Las cafeterias de Balboa y Mar-
garita funcionarin seg6n sus hora-
rios regulars. El expendio de co-
midas de Anc6n trabajarA de
11:30 a.m. a 11 p.m. y el Merende-
ro del Pacifico abrira de 6 a.m. a
2 p.m. Estas unidades estarin dota-
das del personal requerido para
prestar los servicios minimos a sus
respectivas comunidades. Todas las
otras actividades del Centro de
Servicios, incluyendo las que ma-
nejan alimentos y operaciones de
mercancias pequefias, cerrarAn sus
puertas.
Las estaciones de gasoline esta-
rAn abiertas seg6n su horario espe-
cial en dias feriados: La Boca de
6:30 a.m. a 1 p.m.; Gamboa, 8 a.m.

de Mujeres. Su ensayo, que trat6

los sextos grades de las escuelas pri-

De Obra 'Mr. Roberts'
La producci6n del Teatro Surf-
side de la comedia "Mr. Roberts"
que represent la vida a bordo de
un barco durante la II Guerra Mun-
dial, empezara esta noche y conti-

Las actividades para la observa-
ci6n de la semana dedicada a la
Misica por la Escuela Secundaria
de Rainbow City se iniciaron con
la presentaci6n de peliculas sobre
la vida y trayectpria de los mas
sobresalientes exponentes de la mA-
sica clAsica y popular.
Bajo la direcci6n de la bibliote-
caria Inez Maria Herrea, la Biblio-
teca de Rainbow City confeccion6
un folleto que include una breve
biografia de Peter Tchaikosky, ade-
mas de una bibliografia de 3 pAgi-
nas en que aparecen los libros so-
bre musica y musicos que hay dis-
ponibles en la biblioteca.
El punto culminante de los even-
tos de la semana, fue la presenta-
ci6n de un program por la banda
Sde la escuela secundaria y un grupo
de m6sica "rock" compuesto por
miembros de dicha banda, que dio
un concerto para el cuerpo estu-
diantil.
