Won Is Promoted to Treasurer Post


Robert Q. Won, Assistant Treas-
urer since April 1976, has been
named the Canal's new Treasurer
and assumed his new position on
June 29. He succeeds Earl C.
Kecney, who has retired following
29 years of service with the Canal
organization, 27 of those years with
the Treasurer's Office.
Won joined the Canal organiza-
tion in October 1971, when he was
employed by the Supply Division.
He transferred to the Treasury
Branch in February 1973 as assist-
ant to the Treasurer and held that
position until his promotion to
S Assistant Treasurer last year.
Won was born. in Canton, China,
S but has spent most of his life in
New York City where he attended
schools, including Bronx Commu-
nity College and Bernard Baruch
College. He holds an associate de-
gree from Canal Zone College and
is presently working for degrees in
business administration and ac-
counting at Florida State Univer-
sity.
As the new Treasurer, his duties
include serving as treasurer of the


Canal Zone Chapter of the Amer-
ican Red Cross, the Heart Associa-
tion and the Cancer Committee. lie
also has been appointed deputy
comptroller of the United Way.
Won, 30, is the youngest Treas-
urer in the Canal's history. He and
his wife, Marisol, and their three
children, Jos6, who will enter
Curundu Junior High School in
September, and Violeta and Itzel
who attend Los Rios Elementary
School, live in Los Rios. Mrs. Won
also is resuming her education and
attending Canal Zone College,
where she is working to update her
nursing degree.
Keeney began his Canal career in
1948 as an accounting clerk in the
Accounting Division and was em-
ployed briefly in the Claims Branch
before joining the Treasurer's Office
in 1950. Serving in various positions
under five different treasurers,
Keeney was promoted to Assistant
Treasurer in 1971 and Treasurer
in April of last year.
During his many years on the
Isthmus, Keeney has taken special


interest in musical activities and
was until early last year the organ-
ist at St. Luke's Cathedral. He was
the founder of the Isthmian Chapter
of the American Guild of Organists
and past dean of the organization.
As the Canal's Treasurer he has
served also as treasurer of the
Canal Zone Chapter of the Amer-
ican Red Cross, the Heart Associa-
tion and Cancer Committee.
Keeney and his wife, Ida, left
the Isthmus yesterday for Michigan
where they plan to attend their
daughter Janet's wedding and re-
main for the summer. Then they
plan to buy a trailer and see the
country for a year or two. In addi-
tion to daughter Janet, who
was recently graduated from Mich-
igan Technological University, the
Keeneys have two sons, Brian, who
is with the Canal Zone Police Di-
vision, and Ronald, an auditor with
the General Audit Division.
Prior to his departure, Keeney
was presented a Certificate of Ap-
preciation for his many years of
service as Treasurer of the Canal
Zone Cancer Committee.

new assignment in the United
States.
Prior to his departure, the Secre-

award of the Legion of Merit to
Colonel Breunle for his outstanding

petence during the period July 1972
to July 1977.
The citation accompanying the
medal noted the many projects of
special significance to Canal Zone
residents which earned Colonel
Breunle the coveted decoration.
They included a study to deter-
mine the feasibility of reducing
the scope of Coco Solo Hospital
services, the final report of which
resulted in approval by the Office of
the Secretary of the Army to retain
the status of the hospital, and the
planning of major renovations of
three Canal Zone hospitals.
A career military officer, Colonel
Breunle has been selected by the
Office of the Surgeon General, U.S.
Army Medical Corps to be the
recipient of a highly competitive,
long-term civilian schooling scholar-
ship.
He and his family will go to
New Orleans, where he will be
enrolled at the School of Public
Health, Tulane University, for
3 years. While on active military
duty status, he will follow a full-
time graduate study program lead-
ing to a doctorate in Public
Administration.
After receiving his degree, he
will occupy one of four health care
administrative positions validated at
the doctorate level within the
Medical Service Corps which con-
sists of over 4,600 military officers.
While in the Canal Zone, Colonel
Breunle lived in Ancon with his
wife, Judy; sons, Shawn and
Kristan, and daughters, Melissa and
Kara.


Independence Day saw Isthmian residents who "love a parade" turn out
on a bright, sunny Fourth of July morning to see one of the best. There
was something for everyone-from the dignified bearing of the parade
marshal, Brig. Gen. Richard Wm. Anson, to the toe-tapping music of
the Panama Bomberos. Clowns, show dogs, square dancers, marchers
from the scouts, police and fire divisions, military units and civic and
fraternal organizations provided color, gaiety and patriotic dignity enough
for all, but especially for the flag-flying youngsters crowded together for
a curb-side view. The parade over, everyone went home to count the
hours 'til it was time to gather again for the fireworks spectacular that
ended the day's activities.

She was living a full, active,
happy life as a wife and mother
when Carol A. Nellis was asked to
come to work at the Community
Services Division to "fill a special
30-day need." That was extended
by a temporary ;6-week appoint-
ment. And then the position was
made permanent.
Today Carol is in charge of the
division's centralized filing system
and relieves the personnel clerk
and administrative assistant.

A Canal Zone man, who was
featured on the cover of the
PANAMA CANAL REVIEW back in
September 1957, when he was 6
and about to start school and look-
ing bewildered at a huge pile of
books he would be using the next
12 years, has apparently studied
from many more and done his
homework well.
Charles D. Myers, a 1969 grad-
uate of Balboa High School, has
recently been licensed by the U.S.
Coast Guard as a third assistant
engineer in the U.S. Merchant Ma-
rine, after completing last April the
marine engineering course at the
Calhoon M.E.B.A. Engineering
School in Baltimore, Md., where
he was on the Student Honor Roll.
The training included also a year
of sea duty as a cadet aboard
various types of U.S. merchant
vessels.
The new Merchant Marine offi-
cer, who plans to continue a career
in the Merchant Marine, is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Myers of
Margarita. Myers is the Chief Cus-
toms Inspector at Cristobal..

Y' Offers Trim Program
The exercise program at the Bal-
boa YMCA will help you slim down
and stay trim.
Under the guidance of Gitti
Stevenson, exercise classes are held
from 9 to 10 a.n. on Monday and
Thursday, and from 4:30 to
5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thurs-
day for the working woman.
Women participating in the Slim
and Trim Program receive reduced
rates for sauna and massage.


Carol A. Nellis


busiest hobbyists, Carol reels off a
seemingly endless list and ends
with "that's some of them." She
does ceramic work, she gardens,
she knits and crochets, and she
cooks and bakes. She also is a
painter-not an artist. She just
paints everything and anything
around the house. "If it stands
still long enough," Carol says, "it
gets painted."
Her family and friends reap the
rewards of the hobby that tops her
list-cooking and baking. Carol has
32 cookbooks which she says are in
constant use. And while she may
not be an artist with oils and water-
colors, she certainly is with the
sugar, egg whites and food coloring
she uses to make her famous
decorated cakes.
For many years Carol worked
backstage for amateur theater
groups, and for 10 years was in
charge of props for United Way
summer productions.
She also was involved with the
United Way during its annual fund
drive when she was hired for a few
months each year to tally contribu-
tions and help keep the books.
Born in Colon Hospital, Carol
grew up and attended elementary
school in Gatun until her father,
who had been a Canal Zone police-
man since 1913 died in 1944.
After his death Carol's family
moved to Los Angeles and for a
long time after that, she was prac-
tically a commuter between Cali-


fornia and the :Canal Zone. She
lived with her brother, John T.
Styles, whoqis now Operations Su-
pervisor, Gatun Locks, 4vhile she
attended Cristobal Junior Highk
School; went back to Los Angeles
to begin high school; and came to
the Isthmus to live with her sister
Marjorie and brother-in-law Gus
Nellis until she graduated from
Balboa High School.
She was working in Los Angeles
in 1958 when James R. Nellis, who
was visiting his parents, naturally
stopped by to see his sister-in-law.
Soon after, he and Carol were
married in'"beautiful downtown
Burbank" and when his vacation
was over, she finally returned
"home" for good.
Carol and Jim live in Balboa with
their two children Carrie, 18, who
will enter Canal Zone College in
the fall, and Richard, 15, who
begins high school this year. Jim
is the foreman in the Electrical
Division's Armature Shop.
It is Carrie who has brought, at
the very least, Canal Zone-wide
fame to the Nellis family. She was
a sixth grader when she wrote the
tropical parody of the "Twelve
Days of Christmas" that begins
"On the first day of Christmas, my
true love sent to me, a pico feo in
a mango tree." The words have
been requested by ex-Zonians from
all over the world and every
Christmas it is one of the most-
played songs on local radio.

Carlos Williams Appointed Chief, Club Plans Annual

Personnel Policies and Planning Trip to Costa Rica


Carlos A. Williams has been pro-
moted to the position of chief of
the Personnel Policies and Programs
S-taff-which he joined in 1976 as a
Personnel Management Specialist.
He has worked in the Personel
Bureau for 12 years accumulating
experience in many fields of per-
sonnel including classification, posi-
tion management and salary and
wage administration.
Williams was born and grew up
in Colon where he attended ele-
mentary school at Colegio La Salle
and then went to Kingston, Jamaica,
for high school.
A 1961 graduate of Northwestern
University, Evanston, Ill., he holds
a bachelor of science degree with
a major in biological science and

Get Scholarships

From Balboa Elks
High school scholarships for $250
each were awarded two blind Pan-
amanian students of the Helen
Keller school for the blind by
Lodge 1414 of the BPO Elks in the
Canal Zone.
Checks were presented to the
students, Fausto Perez and Ricardo
Vergara by Exalted Ruler James D.
Callagher during a brief ceremony
at the Elks lodge in Balboa on
Friday, July 1.
Among those attending the cere-
mony were Professor Andr6s C.
Toro, assistant director of the Helen
Kcller School and several members
and officers of the Balboa Elks

After he finished school, Williams
returned to Colon where he was
employed in the Colon Free Zone
while working at the same time as
a substitute teacher at the Rainbow
City Elementary School. He taught
full time from 1962 until 1965
when he joined the Personnel
Bureau.
Williams and his wife Daisy live
in Villa Lilla, the San Francisco
area of Panama City. They have
three children: Jorge 11, Luis 9,
and Analisa 5.


The Pana-Tica Club, whose mem-
bership is made up of Panamanian
and Costa Rican employees in the
Canal Zone, is making plans for its
annual excursion to Costa Rica for
the celebration of carnival at Puerto
Limon October 8-12.
The group will leave by bus from
Colon on October 4 and return
October 13. The trip includes the
visit to Puerto Limon by bus and
return to San Jose by plane.

The -purposes of the survey are
to permit an analysis and evaluation
of the EEO program and to meet
the reporting requirements of the
Equal Employment Opportunity
Act of 1972.


A community-wide outbreak of a
temporarily disabling common type
of influenza is affecting Canal em-
ployees and dependents on both
sides of the Isthmus.
The illness, which brings on
headaches, joint and muscle pains,
and chills and fever, has in a few
cases had symptoms not typical of
flu such as gastrointestinal upset.
The disease is very infectious
during the active stage and is trans-
mitted from one person to another
by direct contact or by sneezing or
coughing.
Since a crowded hospital clinic
is the type of place where this kind
of disease is easily transmitted, it is
better to try home care such as
staying in bed, drinking lots of
fluids and taking medication to
relieve pain and fever before going
to an outpatient clinic.
To avoid spreading the disease
further, those already infected
should stay home from work and
away from movie houses, schools
and other public gatherings.
During the coughing and sneezing
stages, good personal hygiene such
as covering the mouth and using
disposable tissues rather than
hankerchiefs will also help.

She succeeds, but Eve's success
is bittersweet and Margo finds there
is more to life than just applause.
Don Lohse, who directed Maine,
the successful United Way musical
of 1972, and then went on to win
Isthmus-wide acclaim for his char-
acterization of Willy Loman in the
Surfside Theatre's production of
Death of a Salesman, will direct
Applause.
Angela Johnston, who has pro-
duced six plays in the past 2 years
at the Theatre Guild, is the
producer.
The original Broadway produc-
tion of Applause won five Tony
Awards, including Best Musical of
1970, and three Drama Desk
Awards. After a triumphant run of
886 performances, it played in
London for a year and was tele-
vised for network showing.
Fifty-five talented actors and
actresses will take part in the
summer musical which will bring
the Canal Zone an exciting night of
theatre: a solid story line, clever
musical numbers, fast-paced dancing
and eye-catching costumes.

Entry forms are available for
Miss Teenage. America, a youth
recognition program which honors
outstanding young women who are
teenage achievers.
In addition to a $15,000 scholar-
ship to the college or university of
her choice, Miss Teenage America
will also receive a minimum of
$5,000 cash for personal ap-
pearances plus numerous other
awards.
Miss Teenage America is not a
* beauty pageant. There is no swim-
suit competition, no crown, no run-
way, no parading. Judging is based
on scholastic achievement and gen-
eral awareness, poise, appearance
and expression, and individual
accomplishment.
A written test by The World
Book Encyclopedia determines the
scholastic achievement score. Lead-
ership, achievement, grooming and
ability to communicate or express
oneself is the basis of judging in
the second category. A special
talent, or developed accomplish-
ment, determines the third score.
Individual accomplishment need not
be a theatrical presentation but can
include sports, crafts, scientific ex-
periments or any area of individual
achievement.
Miss Teenage America pays all
expenses for the girls who qualify
for the national finals. This includes
everything from airfare to a com-
plete telecast wardrobe.

Candidate-At-Large Competition by

'Saltwater Papaya' on Sale


The Spring 1977 edition of "Salt-
water Papaya," the Canal Zone Col-
lege news and feature magazine,
went on sale in the retail stores
this week.
The theme of this year's publica-
tion is the joint contribution of the
United States and Panamanian cul-
tures have made to the enrichment
of campus life. It is symbolized by
the cover photo-in red, white, blue
and purple-of the two Nation's
flags that fly at the college en-
trance.
Among the articles on that topic
is the lead story that traces the
roots of a Construction-Day West
Indian family whose grandson now
attends the College.

Women's Program Adopts New Logo

YMCA was William E. Scofield,
Executive Director, and Robert
Ciepiela, Program Director. Jos6
Chong-Hon, Panama's Delegate to
the conference, spoke for the Pan-
ama YMCA, and Chaplain Clarence
Kuehn and Mrs. Michelle Morice,
Acting Executive Director, Cristo-
bal, represented the Cristobal
Armed Services YMCA.
The delegates departed for Bue-
nos Aires on June 26.

Won Ascendido a Cargo de Tesorero


Robert Q. Won, Subtesorero des-
de abril de 1976, ha sido nombrado
Tesorero de la empresa del Canal,
cargo que asumi6 el 29 de junio.
En su nueva posici6n, sucede a
Earl C. Keeney que se jubil6 tras
halcr dedicado 29 afios de trabajo
a la organizaci6n canalera, 27 de
los cuales fueron con la Tesoreria.
Won se integr6 a la organiza-
ci6n del Canal en octubre de 1971
como empleado de la Divisi6n de
Abasto. En febrero de 1973 se tras-
lad6 al Ramo de Tesoreria como
Ayudante del Tesorero, puesto que
ocup6 hasta que fue ascendido a
Subtesorero el afio pasado.
Won naci6 en Canton, China,
pero ha pasado la mayor parte de
su vida en la ciudad de Nueva
York. Alli asisti6 primero a la es-
cuela y luego a las universidades
de Bronx y Bernard Baruch. Obtu-
vo su titulo de Asociado en Artes
de la Universidad de la Zona del
Canal y proyecta continuar sus es-
tudios en la Universidad de Florida
en mayo para licenciarse en admi-
nistraci6n de negocios y contabi-
lidad.
Como Tesorero del Canal, funge
tambi6n como Tesorero de la Cruz
Roja Americana, Capitulo de la


Zona del Canal; la Asociaci6n Car-
diaca y el Comit6 contra el CAncer,
ambos de la Zona del Canal. Tam-
bi6n ha sido nombrado Subcontra-
lor de la Senda Unida.
Won, de 30 afios de edad, es el
Tesorero mAs joven en la historic
del Canal. Vive en Los Rios con su
esposa Marisol y sus tres hijos: Jos6,
que ingres;ara al Primer Ciclo en
la Escuela de Curund6 en septiem-
bre y Violeta e Itzel, que son alum-
nas de la Escuela Primaria de Los
Rios. La Sra. Won tambi6n ha
reanudado sus studios y es alumna
de la Universidad de la Zona del
Canal donde se prepare para licen-
ciarse en enfermeria.
Keeney comenz6 su carrera con
el Canal en 1948 como oficinista
de contaduria en la Divisi6n de
Contaduria y estuvo empleado por
un breve period en el Ramo de
Reclamos antes de integrarse a la
Tesoreria en 1950. Ocup6 varias
posiciones bajo la direcci6n de cinco
tesoreros distintos y luego fue as-
cendido a Subtesorero en 1971 y a
Tesorero en abril del afio pasado.
Durante sus largos aios en el
Istmo, Keeney ha torado interns
especial en las actividades musica-
les y hasta principios del afio pa-

Keeney y su esposa Ida abando-
naron el Istmo ayer con destino a
Michigan donde piensan asistir a la
boda de su hija Janet y quedarse
todo el verano.
Proyectan comprar una casa a
remolque y viajar por todos los
Estados Unidos durante 1 6 2 aios.
AdemAs de Janet, que recientemen-
te se gradu6 de la Universidad T6c-
nica de Michigan, los Keeney tienen
dos hijos. Uno es Brian que trabaja
con la Divisi6n de Policia y el otro
es Ronald, auditor en la Divisi6n
de Auditoria General.
Antes de su partida, a Keeney

el Gobierno de la Zona del Canal

nuevo cargo en los Estados Unidos.
Antes de su partida, el Secretario
del Ejrcito aprob6 que se le otor-
gara al Coronel Breunle el Premio


DespuBs que al Teniente Coronel Phillip C. Breunle, al centro, le fuera
impuesta la Medalla de la Legi6n de M6rito por el Gobernador H. R.
Parfitt, a la derecha, sus familiares lo rodearon para admirar la codiciada
condecoraci6n y el pergamino en el cual se citan sus sobresalientes
cualidades como lider y organizador y su competent profesionalismo.

dichos proyectos se contaba un es-
tudio de factibilidad pertinente a
los servicios del Hospital Coco Solo,
cuyo informed final fue aprobado
por la Oficina del Secretario del
Ej6rcito recomendando la conserva-
ci6n del hospital asi como tambien
la planificaci6n de grande proyec-
tos de remodelaci6n en tres hospi-
tales de la Zona del Canal.
El Coronel Breunle, que es ofi-
cial military de carrera, ha sido es-
cogido por el Cuerpo Facultativo
de Sanidad de la Oficina del Ins-
pector de Sanidad como adjudica-
tario de una beca para continuar
studios avanzados en un centro
universitario civil.

studios posgraduados para obtener

su esposa Judy y sus hijos Shawn,
Kristan, Melissa y Kara vivieron

Para los residents istmefios amantes de los desfiles, el Cuatro de Julio
result ser un dia perfect y soleado, ideal para presenciar uno de los
mejores espectAculos. Habia algo para todo el mundo-desde el gallardo
porte del mariscal del desfile General de Brigada Wm. Anson, hasta las
ritmicas cornetas del Cuerpo de Bomberos de PanamA. Los payasos, perros
bailarines, cuadrilleros, delegaciones de Boy Scouts, de la policia y los
bombers de la Zona asi como las unidades militares y organizaciones
fraternales y civicas revistieron de colorido, alegria y patri6tico esplendor
la traditional celebraci6n. Pero lo que mas llam6 la atenci6n fueronlos
pequefiuelos que se agolpaban en las aceras, enarbolando sus banderitas
mientras disfrutaban del desfile. Despuos, todos regresaron a sus hogarcs
para esperar a que Ilegara la hora de reunirse nuevamente para el
spectacular despliegue de fuegos artificiales que finalize las actividades
del dia.

La vida que Ilevaba Carol A.
Nellis era plena, active y feliz como
esposa y madre de familiar cuando
le ofrecieron trabajar en la Divi-
si6n de Servicios Comunales en "un
puesto especial por 30 dias". Aquel
trabajo se prolong por 6 semanas
y despu6s lleg6 a convertirse en un
puesto permanent.
Actualmente Carol estA encarga-
da del sistema centralizado de ar-
chivos y ejerce funciones de ofici-
nista de personal y ayudante admi-
nistrativa cuando ello es necesario.
Sin duda alguna, Carol se cuenta
entire las personas que tienen mas

Un joven de la Zona del Canal
cuya fotografia apareci6 en la por-
tada del PANAMA CANAL REVIEW
en septiembre de 1957 cuando s61o
contaba 6 afios de edad y se dispo-
nia a comenzar la escuela, frente a
la enorme pila de libros que ten-
dria que usar durante los 12 afios
siguientes, hoy ha demostrado que
tuvo que usar todos esos libros y
muchos mAs para cumplir su tarea
a cabalidad.
Se trata de Charles Myers, gra-
duado en 1969 de la Escuela Se-
cundaria de Balboa quien reciente-
mente recibi6 su licencia del Ser-
vicio de Guardacostas como maqui-
nista naval de tercera de la Marina
Mercante de los Estados Unidos tras
haber terminado en abril el curso
en tecnologia naval en la Escuela
de Tecnologia Naval M.E.B.A. Cal-
hoon, en Baltimore, Maryland, ocu-
pando puesto de honor. El adiestra-
miento incluy6 1 ailo de servicio en
alta mar como cadete a bordo de
various tipos de embarcaciones de la
Marina Mercante de los Estados
Unidos.
El nuevo official piensa seguir su
carrera con la Marina Mercante.
Es hijo de C. B. Myers y Sra., resi-
dentes de Margarita. Myers es Ins-
pector Jefe de Aduanas de Cris-
t6bal.

Program de Ejercicios
El program de ejercicios del
YMCA de Balboa le ayudarA a reba-
jar de peso y a mantenerse esbelta.
Bajo la direcci6n de Gitti Steven-
son, se ofrecen classes de ejercicios
de 9 a 10 a.m. los lunes y jueves,
y de 4:30 a 5:30 p.m. los martes y
jueves para las mujeres que tra-
bajan.
Las participants en el Programa
de Ejercicios para Conservar la Es-
beltez tienen tarifas reducidas para
sauna y masajes.


Carol A. Nellis


pasatiempos en la Zona del Canal;
su lista parece interminable y al
final siempre dice que "esos son
s6lo algunos". Hace trabajos-de ce-
rAmica, es aficionada a la jardineria,
teje con dos agujas y con gancho
de crochet y tambi6n cocina. Ade-
mAs es pintora . . . pero de brocha
gorda. Se dedica a pintar de todo y
por todas parties. Ella dice que
todo lo que se le pone por delante
tarde o temprano terminal pintan-
dolo.
Su familiar y amistades sin em-
bargo, aprovechan el product de
su pasatiempo principal que es la
cocina y la reposteria. Carol es
duefia de 32 libros de cocina que
segin ella misma los usa constan-
temente y, aunque no es artist con
6leos y acuarelas, si que lo es con
azfcar, claras de huevo y coloran-
tes, los que emplea para adornar
sus famosos bizcochos.
Durante muchos aieos Carol ha
trabajado tras bastidores con grupos
teatrales aficionados y durante
10 aieos estuvo encargada de la pro-
moci6n annual de las obras teatrales
a beneficio de la Senda Unida.
Ademas, mientras colaboraba con
la campafia annual de la Senda Uni-
da, la emplearon durante unos me-
ses para que Ilevara las cuentas de
las donaciones y los libros de con-
tabilidad.
Naci6 en el Hospital de Col6n
y asisti6 a la escuela primaria de
Gatin, hasta que su padre, que
habia sido policia de la Zona del
Canal desde 1913, falleci6 en 1944.
Despues de su muerte, la fiamilia
de Carol se traslad6 a Los Angeles
y por much tiempo despubs ella


viaj6 casi constantemente entire la
Zona del Canal y California. Mien-
tras estudiaba en primer ciclo en la
Escuela de Crist6bal vivi6 con su
hermano John T. Styles, que ahora
es Supervisor de Operaciones de las
Esclusas de Gatim. Luego regr-es
a Los Angeles para comenzar la
escuela secundaria y despues volvi6
al Istmo a vivir con su hermana
Marjorie y su cufiado Gus Nellis
hasta que se gradu6 de la Escuela
Secundaria de Balboa.
Trabaj6 en Los Angeles hasta
1958, cuando James R. Nellis que
visitaba a sus padres, naturalmente
se detuvo a visitar a su cufiada.
Poco despues 1 y Carol se casaron
en la "famosa barriada de Burbank"
y cuando se le terminaron las vaca-
ciones volvi6 a "casa" para que-
darse.
Carol y Jim viven en Balboa con
sus dos hijos, Carrie, de 18 afios
que entrara a la Universidad de la
Zona del Canal el pr6ximo semes-
tre, y Richard, de 15 afios, que co-
menzara la escuela secundaria este
afio. Jim es Capataz del Taller de
Armaduras de la Divisi6n de Elec-
tricidad.
Pero es a Carrie a quien la fami-
lia Nellis le debe a su gran fama y
popularidad. Cuando cursaba el
sexto grado compuso la parodia tro-
pical del clasico villancico norte-
americano "Los Doce Dias de Navi-
dad". Los versos de esta parodia
han sido solicitados de todas parties
del mundo por exresidentes de la
Zona del Canal y es una de las
tonadas mis populares en la radio
local durante la temporada navi-
defia.

Carlos A. Williams fue ascendido
recientemente a Jefe de la Oficina
de Normas y Programas de Perso-
nal donde ha estado trabajando
desde,-1976 como Especialista en
Administraci6n de Personal.
Hace 12 afios se uni6 a la Direc-
ci6n de Personal adquiriendo du-
rante es period vasta experiencia
en dicho ramo de trabajo, inclu-
yendo clasificaci6n y administraci6n
de posiciones y salaries.
Williams es oriundo de la ciudad
de Col6n donde curs6 studios pri-
marios en el Colegio La Salle, para
mAs tarde culminar su educaci6n
secundaria en Kingston, Jamaica.
En 1961 se gradu6 de la Univer-
sidad Northwestern en Evanston,
Illinois, con uiia licenciatura en
ciencias, con especialidad en biolo-

Organiza Excursion
El Club Pana-Tica, cuyos miem-
bros son panameiios y costarricen-
ses que trabajan en la Zona del
Canal, esti proyectando su excur-
si6n annual a Costa Rica para fes-
tejar los carnavales que se celebran
en Puerto Lim6n del 8 al 12 de
octubre.
El grupo saldrA por autob6s des-
de Col6n el 4 de octubre y regre-
sara el 13 del mismo mes. El viaje
incluye la visit a Puerto Lim6n
por autobis y regreso a San Jos6
por avi6n.

fecha en que se uni6 a la Direcci6n

Williams y su esposa Daisy viven
en Villa Lilla, en el Area de San
Francisco de la ciudad de PanamA
y tienen tres hijos: Jorge de 11 afios,
Luis de 9 y Analisa de 5 afios de
edad.

Esta encuesta tiene como fin per-
mitir un anilisis y evaluaci6n del
program de Igualdad en Oportu-

Felicidad es saber que hay quien
nos defienda de los grandulones.


Al entrar en la filtima etapa de
sus ensayos y faltando 2 semanas
para la presentaci6n de la obra mu-
sical Aplauso a beneficio de la
Senda Unida de la Zona del Canal,
el elenco sigue puliendo sus nuime-
ros mientras trabajadores volunta-
rios laboran febrilmente en la cons-
trucci6n de los escenarios. Ya se en-
cuentra en la Zona todo el vestua-
rio-160 trajes por todo-usado en
la obra original cuando fue presen-
tada en Broadway.

Influenza Comun

Afecta al Istmo
En toda la comunidad se ha re-
gistrado un brote de influenza de
tipo com6n que produce incapaci-
dad temporal y que estA afectando
a empleados y dependientes del
Canal en ambos sectors del Istmo.
La enfermedad cuyos sintomas
son jaqueca, dolores musculares y
en las articulaciones, escalofrios y
condici6n febril, tambi6n se ha ma-
nifestado con sintomas que no son
caracteristicos de la influenza tales
como molestias gastrointestinales.
Durante su etapa active el virus
es sumamente .contagioso y se trans-
mite por contact director o me-
diante estornudos o tos del en-
fermo.
Como las aglomeraciones en las
clinics de los hospitals son medio
propicio para la propagaci6n de
este tipo de enfermedades es mis
convenient someterse a cuidados
caseros, reposo, dieta liquid y me-
dicamentos para aliviar el dolor y
la fiebre antes de acudir a una
clinic de atenci6n general.
Para evitar que se siga propa-
gando esta influenza, las personas
afectadas deben quedarse en sus
casas y abstenerse de ir a trabajar
y no frecuentar lugares de reuni6n
tales como teatros, escuelas, etc.
Durante la etapa de estornudos y
tos, se recomienda a los pacientes
observer medidas de higiene tales
como taparse la boca al toser y
usar pafiuelos desechables en vez
de pafiuelos de lino.

El Viernes Haran Censo

Acerca de Eva, que fue premiada
por la Academia como la mejor pe-
licula de 1950, Aplauso simboliza el
turbulento mundo del teatro. Su
tema es la clisica historic de una
actriz que se propone reemplazar a
la estrella de una obra de gran 6xito
en Broadway. Aunque logra hacer-
lo, su triunfo result algo amargo
cuando Margo se da cuenta de que
la vida significa -mucho mAs que
los aplausos.
La obra serA dirigida por Don
Lohse, que tambi6n dirigi6 Mame,
producci6n que tuvo gran 6xito en
1972. El conocido director y actor
fue aclamado por su actuaci6n en
el dificil papel de Willy Loman en
La Muerte de un Vendedor, pre-
sentada en el Teatro Surfside.
Angela Johnson, productora de
seis obras en los filtimos 2 afios,
esta encargada de la producci6n.

Teenage America
Ya pueden obtenerse los formu-
larios de inscripci6n para "Miss
Teenage America", concurso me-
diante el cual se otorga reconoci-
miento a las j6venes sobresalientes
que han logrado destacarse en sus
afios de adolescencia.
AdemAs de una beca de $15,000
para estudiar en la universidad de
su preferencia, la ganadora de este
concurso recibirA un minimo de
$5,000 en efectivo para cubrir los
gastos en que se incurran durante
sus presentaciones p6blicas y nu-
merosos premios adicionales.
Este no es un concurso de belle-
za. No se compite' en vestido de
baiio y no hay ni corona ni desfile
por la rampa. Las participants son
juzgadas de acuerdo con tres as-
pectos a saber: aplicaci6n acad6-
mica y conocimientos generals;
garbo y personalidad; y logros
personales.
La aplicaci6n acad6mica se de-
termina mediante un examen es-
crito administrado por la World
Book Encyclopedia. En la segunda
categoria del concurso se eval6an
don de mando, logros, apariencia
personal y capacidad de comunica-
cidn o expresi6n y en la tercera ca-
tegoria se juzga el talent o habi-
lidad especial de las participants.
Los logros personales no necesa-
riamente tienen que ser talents ar-
tisticos sino que pueden ser de-
portes, habilidades manuales o
cientificas o cualquier otro tipo de
logro personal.
El concurso "Miss Teenage Amer-
ica" se cncarga de pagar todos los
gastos de las finalists del concur-
so a nivel national, incluyendo pa-
sajes a6reos y vestuario de las can-
didatas para las presentaciones en
television.

La edici6n de primavera de 1977
de "Saltwater Papaya" la revista
que public la Universidad de la
Zona del Canal ya se puede com-
prar en los puestos de venta en la
Zona del Canal.
El tema de la publicaci6n este
afio trata sobre el legado conjunto
de las cultures estadounidense y
panamefia al enriquecimiento de la
vida escolar universitaria. Simboliza
este tema la fotografia de la por-
tada-en rojo, blanco azul y mo-
rado-de las banderas de las dos
naciones que hamean a la entrada
de la universidad.
Habla tambien sobre el tema el
articulo principal que ahonda en los
origenes de una familiar antillana de
la 6poca de la construcci6n del
Canal, cuyo nieto actualmente es-
tudia en la universidad.

Johnson, Decano de Estudios Pos-

Peterson, de la Fuerza Aerea de los

curso de despedida en nombre de

zas Armadas y la Compaflia del

monia, ya que la mayoria de los
graduandos pertenecen a estas

Repuiblica de Panama y la Zona
del Canal. En representaci6n de la
YMCA de los Servicios Armados de
Balboa estuvo William. Scofield, Di-
rector Ejecutivo y Robert Ciepiela,
Director de Programas. Jose Chong-
Hon, delegado de Panama ante el
Congress habl6 por la YMCA de
PanamA y el Capellan Clarence
Kuehn y la Sra. Michelle Morice,
Director Ejecutiva Interina, repre-
sentaron a la YMCA de Crist6bal.
Los delegados siguieron viaje para
Buenos Aires el 26 de junior.

Esta es una pregunta muy fre-
cuente. Si usted quiere saber cuAnto
sera su pension de jubilaci6n haga
la siguiente operaci6n: Sume el ni-
mero de afios de servicio federal,
reste 2 afios del total y multiplique
lo que queda por dos. El resultado
sera el porcentaje aproximado de lo
utilizable del salario de su iltimo
afio de trabajo. Por ejemplo, si tiene
29 afios de servicio, restele 2. Le
quedan 27. Multipliquelo por 2 y le
dara 54 por ciento. Si el salario
annual de su 6ltimo afio de servicio
fue de $18,000, multiplique esta
cifra por 54 por ciento y como re-
sultado obtendra $9,720. Esta sera
la suma muy aproximada de su
pension de jubilaci6n.
