Registration for Next School Year Begins June 20


Registration for the 1977-78
school year will start June 20 and
continue through August 26. Stu-
dents, who will be new to the Canal
Zone schools, are urged to register
at the earliest possible date to pro-
vide for individual and school
planning. Sponsorship cards for all
students whose parents are em-
ployed by U.S. Government agen-
cies other than the Panama Canal
Company-Canal Zone Government
should be secured in advance by
the students from the agency con-
cerned. Registration cannot be com-
pleted without these iards.
Elementary Schools
Hours of registration will be
8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m. On


the Atlantic side, registration will
be at the Fort Gulick, Marga-
rita and Coco Solo schools. New
students who 'will be attending
Fort Davis School should register at
Fort Gulick. On the Pacific side,
Los Rios, Balboa, Curundu and
Howard elementary schools will be
the registration centers. New stu-
dents who will attend Diablo should
register at either Los Rios, Balboa
or Curundu and those attending
Fort Kobbe School should go to
Howard School to register.
Parents are to accompany the
new pupils and fill out information
blanks furnished by the school.
Report cards from the last school
attended are to be presented at
this time. For pupils entering kin-


dergarten or grade 1, birth certifi-
cates will be needed. Children who
will have reached 5 years of age
on or before December 1, 1977 will
be admitted to kindergarten. Those
who have reached 6 years of age
on or before December 1, 1977 will
be admitted to grade one.
Secondary Schools
Students enrolling in grades 7-12
who did not attend Canal Zone
schools last year may register at
Balboa High School, grades 10-12;
Cristobal Junior-Senior High School,
grades 7-12; and Curundu Junior
High School, grades 7-9. Hours of
registration are 8 to 11 a.m. and
1 to 3:30 p.m. Having a report card

finding visit to the Isthmus, the Governor called on Canal Zone Gov.
H. R. Parfitt; Lt. Gen. Dennis P. McAuliffe, Commander-in-Chief, U.S.
Southern Command; U.S. Embassy Charge d'Affaires Raymond Gonzalez,
and Panamanian Foreign Minister Nicolas Gonzalez Revilla and received
briefings on the status of treaty negotiations. Before leaving, Governor
Thomson also met with Canal Zone residents in an open forum. At left

New ICU Provides Community With

As an expanded service to the
medical needs of the community
and international maritime com-
merce, a modern Intensive Care
Unit for patients who require inten-
sive, skilled nursing care was
opened the past Monday at Gorgas
Hospital.
Staffed by highly skilled, spe-
cially trained registered nurses and
equipped with the latest medical
apparatus provided by modern
medical science and technology, the
new Intensive Care Unit is one of
the most modern units of its type
in this part of the world.
Generally, one registered nurse
and a nursing assistant will pro-
vide care for each two patients,
who because of medical, surgical or
pulmonary problems need special


nursing care and close observation.
The 10-bed facility, located on
the second floor of the Main Build-
ing and adjacent to the operating
room, laboratory and Radiology De-
partment, is approximately 50 per-
cent larger than the former In-
tensive Care Unit.
Each bed location is capable of
centralized cardiac monitoring and
is visible from the strategically lo-
cated nurses station, which has
medication and supply storage areas
and an intercommunication system
that connects with the operating
room, recovery room and laboratory.
Each bed position is also equipped
with wall-mounted oxygen, com-
pressed air and suction, electrical
outlets, monitoring capabilities, and
standard and surgical lighting for


special procedures. Three of the
beds are isolated for the protection
and special care of such patients
as burn patients and patients with
communicable diseases.
Mobile medical equipment in-
cludes volume and pressure limited
respirators, monitors and emergency
resuscitation apparatus. Cardiac
monitoring for patients with cen-
tralized reporting at the nurses
station can give simultaneous read-
ings for several patients. The In-
tensive Care Unit also has its own
X-ray view box for the viewing of
patients X-rays.
The entire unit is on emergency
electric power and grounded with
. the use of the most advanced isola-
tion circuitry. The unit also has its

NEW CUSTOMER-The British flag ship, "Hamlet Beatrice," a dry bulk
carrier, enters Pedro Miguel during a northbound transit recently enroute
from Vancouver to Northern Europe with a load of grain. The "Hamlet
Beatrice," which is owned by Rederiet Hamlet, of Copenhagen, Denmark,
is 736 feet long and 105.9 feet in beam. The "Hamlet Beatrice" will be
a regular customer of the Canal traveling between the east coast of the
United States and Japan. C. B. Fenton & Co. are agents for the ship
at the Canal.

Readers of the PANAMA CANAL
REVIEW who have written letters to
its editor using the salutation "Dear
Mr. Friar" will be surprised to learn
that Willie K. Friar is not only a
woman but on Monday will become
the Panama Canal's first woman
press officer.
Ms. Friar was born-and grew up
in a small town not far from now-
famous Plains, Ga. After graduating
from the Henry W. Grady School
of Journalism at the University of
Georgia, she edited, wrote and took
photographs for the employee
magazine of a well-known textile
company in Graniteville, S.C.
While married to a U.S. Army
officer, Ms. Friar worked overseas
in Germany and Denmark, and,
back in the States, in Kentucky.
In Germany, she worked-often
in fatigues and boots for Stars and
Stripes and as an'accredited news/
photographer correspondent for a
South Carolina newspaper. Among
her assignments was going on ma-
neuvers with NATO forces led by
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.
During 3 years in Denmark,
Ms. Friar freelanced as both a fea-
ture writer and photographer.
Her first job after returning to
the United States was editing two
editions of the a guide book for the


State of Kentucky. A job she did
so well, the Governor made her an
honorary Kentucky colonel.
Ms. Friar and her two sons,
Robert and William, came to the
Canal Zone to live in 1969. First
employed as a writer on THE
SPILLWAY, she was promoted and
named editor of THE PANAMA
CANAL REVIEW in 1971.
A professional photographer, she
increased the quantity and quality
of the photographs, added color
and, over the years, has made the
Canal company's official magazine
one of the most popular publica-
tions ever published in the Canal
Zone. The REVIEw's excellence was
recognized last year when the
Southern Regional Printers' Associa-
tion gave the magazine its award
for best promotion, layout and de-
sign of an institutional publication.
In her new position, Ms. Friar
replaces Morgan Goodwin, who
left last week for the United States.
She will be responsible for all in-
ternal and external publications of
the Canal company, for meeting
with newsmen from around the
world who more and more fre-
quently arrive on the Isthmus to
cover one of today's biggest stories,
and for telling the Panama Canal
story.

Ms. Friar's talents have been
recognized often, including four
outstanding performance awards
and her selection as one of four
Canal company women nominated
for the Federal Woman's Award.
She has also won prizes for her
photographs.
The Friars share an enthusiasm
for travel and each vacation takes
them to another part of the world
-usually by ship. They have visited
29 countries-in Europe, in South
America, in Africa, in Asia, and,
most of the United States including
Hawaii and Alaska as well as
Canada and Mexico. Not typical

New Assignment for

Maj. Gen. McGinnis

Maj. Gen. Charles I. McGinnis
has been named Director of Civil
Works, Office of the Chief of En-
gineers, Washington, D.C.
Assigned to the Canal organiza-
tion from July 1971 to June 1974,
General McGinnis served as Di-
rector of the Engineering and
Construction Bureau for a year
before being appointed Lieutenant
Governor.
After leaving the Isthmus, he
was assigned as the Southwestern
Division Engineer for the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers in Dallas,
Tex.
In his new position, General
McGinnis will manage the Corps'
4,000 water resources development
projects and project authorizations.
Commissioned in the Army Corps
of Engineers in 1948 following
graduation from Texas A&M Col-
lege, he received a master of sci-
ence degree in civil engineering
from the same institution in 1950.
General McGinnis is a registered
professional engineer, a graduate
of the Command and General Staff
College, the Armed Forces Staff
College and the Army War College.


Supervisors To Make

Minority Headcount

An agency-wide minority census
of all active employees will be con-
ducted in the Panama Canal Com-
pany-Canal Zone Government on
July 15 as announced by Gov. H. R.
Parfitt recently before the Merchant
Marine and Fisheries Subcommittee
during open hearings ,held on the
Isthmus. The census will be con-
ducted visually with the applicable
minority status code determined by
the unit supervisor.
Pursuant to a recent directive of
the Office of Management and
Budget to all Executive Depart-
ments and Establishments, the
minimum combined basic racial and
ethnic categories authorized for
Federal statistics and program ad-
ministrative reporting are: Amer-
ican Indian or Alaskan Native;
Asian or Pacific Islander; Black, not
of Hispanic origin; Hispanic, and
White, not of Hispanic origin.
Bruce A. Quinn, Director of
-EEO for the Canal agencies, bears
ultimate responsibility for minority
group information collected and for
all minority group reports generated
therefrom.
Current U.S. Civil Service Com-
mission regulations prohibit super-
visors from asking employees their
race. or ethnic origin. However,
employees who wish to know their
minority code designation may
make an appointment with the Di-
rector of EEO at the Office of EEO
located at the Balboa Heights Train
Station, after August 15. Upon re-
view of the minority code designa-
tion, an employee may change the
designation but only after making
an appointment, in person, with
the Director of EEO.
The nev: agency system designed
by the Systems Division of the
Office of the Financial'Vice Ptre-
ident is in consonance with P. L.
93-579 (the Privacy Act of 1974)
and Title 5 U.S.C., Section 552,
as amended by that law.

To Kathleen Mary McGuigan-one of the Canal organization's longtime
employees-goes a Master's Key to the Panama Canal Locks and a cer-
tificate in the grade of Master Humanitarian. Lt. Gov. Richard L. Hunt
(right), made the presentation at a party attended by Miss McGuigan's
coworkers and friends to celebrate her retirement after 43 years of Canal
service. At left is Walter D. Bjorseth, the eighth Financial Vice President
for whom Miss McGuigan worked during a career that began as a typist
in the Accounting Division and came to a close after many years as
administrative officer.

Hamblin H. Sisnett can't hide the satisfaction he feels as he glances
through the Summer 1977 edition of THE PANAMA CANAL REVIEW. An
employee at the Mount Hope and La Boca printing plants for 43 years,
he has been hand-compositor of THE REVIEW for the last 13 years of his
long career. Sisnett, who retires July 1, began work as a 15-year-old
messenger and over the years -has become.one of the most skilled crafts-
men in the plant. He says he takes special pride in making up THE REVIEW
which he believes has become more interesting and attractive with every
issue. Sisnett and his wife, Iris, will live in Panama City after he retires
and he plans to "just take it easy." One thing sure he .is going to have
his name on THE REVIEW subscription list.

Relays; while John, the outstanding boy on the Margarita Track Team,
won first place in the 75-yd dash and the 440-yd relay at Coco Solo and
Balboa relays, placed second in the 75-yd dash and won first place in
the 440-yd dash in the Balboa Relays.

Two Coco Solo Doctors Certified

By Speciality Examining Boards


Dr. Phillip Vaughn Akers and
Dr. H. Dodge Engleman on the
staff of Coco Solo Hospital, have
successfully completed the oral and
written examinations required for
certification by their medical spe-
cialty examining boards.
Dr. Akers, who has been certified
in Internal Medicine by the Amer-
ican Board of Internal Medicine,
Philadelphia, Pa., is licensed to
practice in Tennessee, Florida and
the Canal Zone.
A native of Kentucky, Dr. Akers
received a bachelor of arts degree
from Cumberland College, Wil-
liamsburg, Ky., a master's degree
from the University of Northern
Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and his
medical degree from the University
of Tennessee at Memphis in 1970.
As a graduate physician, he was
selected for training in the National
Science Foundation Program and
attended Long Beach University
and Eastern Illinois University.
He served a rotating internship
at Gorgas (1971-72), his residency
in internal medicine at Gorgas from
1972 to 1975 and was on the staff
at Gorgas from 1975 to 1976.
Prior to joining Gorgas in 1971,
Dr. Akers served at the Tennessee
Psychiatric Hospital and Research
Institute in Memphis.
Among his favorite pastimes are
underwater photography, color dark-
room work, natural history, elec-
tronics and high fidelity systems.
Dr. Akers and his wife, Marianne,
.have two son: Derek, 6, and
Kevin, 3. Dr. Akers is a member of
the Medical Association of the Isth-
mian Canal Zone.


Dr. Engleman, accredited by the
American Board of Family Practice,
was born at Salina, Kans. He re-
ceived his premedical education at
Kansas University, Lawrence, Kans.,
where he earned a bachelor of arts
degree with honors in zoology, and
his medical degree in 1970 from
Kansas University at Kansas City.
While \at Kansas University, Dr.
Engleman spent his second year in
medical studies as an exchange
scholar at the University of the
Philippines at Manila and a part of
his senior year at the University of
West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.
Dr. Engleman served an intern-
ship at Gorgas Hospital from 1970
to 1971 and instead of serving a
traditional residency he qualified
through post graduate work and
continued medical education courses
and by the receipt of the Physician
Recognition Award from the Amer-
ican Medical Association. His
favorite hobbies are related to
zoology and the natural sciences.
Both Dr. Akers and Dr. Engle-
man have attended a number of
scientific meetings abroad and have
published papers in their respective
fields.

Shorthand at YMCA
A 4-week review course in Gregg
Shorthand will begin Monday at the
Balboa YMCA.
It is not a beginners' class but
will review theory with emphasis
on brief forms and phrasing. Prac-
tice dictation will. be given at suc-
cessively higher speeds.
Classes will be from'7 to 9 p.m.
on Monday and Thursday.


With the mighty roar from a 69,000-pound dynamite blast-reportedly the
largest in Panama Canal history-"No-Name Island" becomes a huge pile
of rubble. It was the final operation in the land portion of the drilling
and blasting of the Dredging Division's Gamboa Reach Widening Project
which began last November. Dredging operations to remove the loosened
material will begin in the fall. "No-Name Island" is located on the west
.bank of the Canal channel at the north end of Gamboa Reach just south
of Mamei Curve. The completed project will -improve Canal safety when
large ships meet and pass in the area and help scheduling problems.

Proudly displaying a Panama Canal Special Acts or Services Award is
Concepci6n Gonzalez, a drill rig operator in the Dredging Division, who
received the award as official recognition for saving the life of a coworker.
While he and John J. Montell were working on an explosive float on the
bank of Santa Cruz Island in the dark recently, Montell bent over to
inspect a pipe lying on the deck, the wave of a passing vessel struck the
float with such force that Montell fell overboard, hit his head on an
object in the water, leaving him helpless .and stunned. Gonzilez quickly
jumped into the water and pulled him out but the steep, rocky bank
made it impossible to drag the unconscious man to shore, so he held
Montell's head above water until help arrived. A check for $500
accompanied the award.

The Balboa Youth Center, "The
Bridge," will hold its monthly
Flea Market from 9 a.m. until
3 p.m., June 18. Everyone in the
community is welcome to come and
sell their handicrafts, plants, and

college who are pursuing studies in medically-related fields. Selections

Smoke Detectors Give

Early Fire Warning
At 5:05 p.m., a housewife was
frying fish on an electric range. The
dining room table was set for five,
for her husband who was due home
from work in a few minutes, three
small children who were playing in
the living room, and herself.
The neighbor called and asked
her to come over and see something
she had bought for the house that
afternoon. The housewife agreed
and left her house by the kitchen
door. Since she thought she would
be out only a minute or two, the
stove was left "On."
About 4 or 5 minutes later she
smelled the odor of something
burning and heard a crackling
sound. She then remembered leav-.
ing the fish frying and her three
small children. She tried to re-
enter the house by the kitchen
but the room was already engulfed
in flames. As she ran to the front
door she remembered it was locked,
and called out to her neighbor's
husband for help to break down the
door. He came running with a crow
bar while his wife reported the fire
to the Fire Department. He forced
the door open, then he and the
mother of the children crawled
through the smoke filled room found
the children and carried then out-
side where they regained conscious-
ness.
Stoves should never be left "On"
when the cook leaves the kitchen
for' any reason.

Richard Robinson will return to
the Canal Zone next month to con-

YMCA.

Display at College
An exhibit of works by three ad-
vanced art students at Canal Zone
College is currently on display at
the Learning Resource Center
(Library) of the College.
Mark Asman, Margaret Kunkle,
and Gary Illund have completed
2 years of study at Canal Zone Col-
lege and are currently preparing for
further study leading to careers in
art.
The display contains oil paintings
and drawings in pencil and char-
coal. The public is invited to see
these fine works throughout June
and July from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.,
Monday through Friday.
Also on exhibit throughout the
Main Building are,.eanmples of,tu-
dent work from. pring Semester
Art Classes. These include prints,
drawings, oil paintings, and works
in three dimensional design.


It was award day in a big way when Julie Cubero and Danny Paul, sixth
graders at the Fort Gulick Elementary School, received trophies after
their schoolmates voted them Mr. and Miss Physical Fitness. The trophies
were presented at a ceremony during which 150 awards were given to
students in all of the school's six grades. Included were physical education
awards, Presidential Physical Fitness awards, awards for the most valuable
player in soccer and basketball, and track awards. Other accomplishments
were recognized with audiovisual, reading and attendance awards as well
as awards to those students who had improved the most during the
school year. At center is Vernon G. Caturia, principal.


George Broyles looks on admiringly at the Thatcher Medal won by the
Canal Zone College 1977 class valedictorian, Mrs. Patricia A. Watts.
Dr. Glen E. Murphy, College Dean, is presenting the medal to Mrs. Watts
as the outstanding graduate in scholarship and citizenship. Mrs. Watts
had a straight "A" average for all of her credits completed at the College
and gave the farewell address on behalf of her classmates at the College
graduation'- eercises on June . 'She al] iwVas the recipient of the
Dr. Dorothy Moody Prize for Excellence in English Studies, which is
presented annually to the outstanding English graduate of the College.

Respiratory Disease

Epidemic Affecting

Children and Adults
Isthmians are experiencing a
small epidemic of upper respiratory
disease, probably of a viral nature,
which has been noted to affect
both children and adults. The symp-
toms are fever, chills, moderately
severe headache, sore throat, aches,
and abdominal pain. The disease
usually lasts 3-4 days, and treat-
ment is with plenty of fluids, aspirin
or Tylenol, and bed rest.
Patients with these symptoms
are advised to use the treatment
outlined above; however, if high
fever persists for more than 3 days,
or if the patient looks sicker, then
medical care should be obtained.
It is hoped that with these meas-
ures the excessive demand on the
health facilities will be alleviated.

American Society of Military Comp-
trollers will hold its monthly lunch-

como editor, redactora y fot6grafa
de la revista de empleados de una
bien conocida firma de textiles en
Graniteville, Carolina del Sur.
Como esposa de un official del
Ej6rcito de los Estados Unidos, la
Sra. Friar trabaj6 en Alemania y
Dinamarca y mins tarde en los Es-
tados Unidos, en Kentucky.

El General de Divisi6n Charles
I. McGinnis ha sido nombrado como
Director de Obras Piiblicas de la
Oficina del Jefe de Ingenieria en
Washington, D.C.
Muy recordado en el Istmo, el
General McGinnis estuvo asignado
a la organization del Canal de Pa-
nami desde julio de 1971 hasta
junior de 1974. Antes de su nombra-
miento como Vicegobernador, es-
tuvo al frente de la Direcci6n de
Ingenieria y Construcci6n por un
ano.
Al moment de su partida, habia
sido nombrado Ingeniero Jefe de la
Division Sudoeste del Cuerpo de
Ingenieria del Ej6rcito de los Esta-
dos Unidos en Dallas, Texas.
En su nueva pdsici6n el General
McGinnis estarA a cargo, de los
4,000 proyectos de desarrollo de
recursos hidraulicos y autorizacio-
nes de proyectos de los cuales es
responsible esa entidad.
Recibi6 su comisi6n como official
en el Cuerpo de Ingenieria del
Ej6rcito en 1948 despu6s de com-
pletar studios universitarios- en
Texas A&M. En 1950 recibi6 su
Maestria en Ciencias con especiali-
zaci6n en Ingenieria Civil de la
misma instituci6n.
El General McGinnis es inge-
niero professional acreditado, ade-
mis de ser egresado de la Escuela
de Comando y Estado Mayor, de
la Escuela de Estado Mayor de las
Fuerzas Armadas y del Colegio de
Guerra del Ejircito.

Censo de Minorias
La Compafia del Canal de Pa-
nama-Gobierno de la Zona del
Canal llevari a cabo un censo ge-
neral de grupos minoritarios de
empleados activos en toda la em-
presa el 15 de julio seg6n anunci6.
recientemente el Gobernador H. R.
Parfitt ante el Subcomit6 de Marina
Mercante y Pesca durante las
audiencias pdblicas que dicho co-
mit6 sostuvo en el Istmo. El censo
se efectuara visualmente y el su-
pervisor de la unidad determinara
la clave de grupo minoritario apli-
cable.
De acuerdo con directrices re-
cientes de la Oficina de Administra-
ci6n y Presupuesto a todos los De-
partamentos y Entidades Ejecutivas,
las categories raciales y 6tnicas bi-
sicas combinadas minimas autoriza-
das para fines de estadistica e
informes administrativos de progra-
mas Federales son: Indio America-
no; Native de Alaska, Asiatico; Isle-
no del Pacifico; Negro, no de origen
Hispinico, HispAnico y Blanco, no
de origen Hispanico.
Bruce A. Quinn, Director de la
Oficina de Igualdad en Oportunida-
des de Empleo del Canal estA en-
cargado de la informaci6n recopi-
lada sobre grupos minoritarios y de
todos los informes pertinentes.
Los reglamentos vigentes de la
Comisi6n de Servicio Civil de los
Estados Unidos prohiben a los
supervisors hacer preguntas a los
empleados acerca de su raza u ori-
gen 6tnico. Sin embargo, los em-
pleados que deseen saber la desig-
naci6n de grupo minoritario que
les fue asignada pueden hacer una
cita con el Director de la Oficina
de Igualdad en Oportunidades de
Empleo en la Estaci6n del Tren de
Balboa Heights despu6s del 15 de
agosto de 1977. Una vez revisada
su designaci6n de grupo minorita-
rio, el empleado puede cambiarlo
pero s6lo haciendo una cita en
persona con el Director de dicha
oficina.
El nuevo sistema de agencia di-
sefiado por la Divisi6n de Sistemas
de la Oficina del Vicepresidente de
Finanzas se cifie a la P.L. 93-579
(Ley sobre Divulgaci6n de Datos
Personales de 1974) y Titulo 5
U.S.C., Secci6n 552, seg(n enmien-
da a dicha ley.


Mostrando orgullosos las places que simbolizan sus recientes 6xitos en las
competencias de campo, se aprecia a un grupo de alumnos de la Escuela
Primaria de Margarita. Ellos son: H6ctor Bonilla (a la izquierda), Denise
Smith y John Styles. H6ctor sobrepas6 las marcas establecidas para la
carrera de 440 metros pianos en el sector Atlantico; para la de 100 metros
pianos Denise *empat6 el record istmeiio establecido en 1968 y sobre-
pas6 la marca del sector AtlAntico ganando dicha carrera y estableci6 una
nueva marca en el salto alto en las competencias en Balboa, mientras que
John, atleta sobresaliente en el equipo de Margarita, gan6 primer puesto
en la carrera de 75 metros pianos y la de 440 metros pianos en las
competencias de Coco Solo y Balboa, Ilegando de segundo en la de
75 metros y ganando primer puesto en la de 440 metros en la competencia
de Balboa.

Kathleen Mary McGuigan, gran dama y veteran empleada de la orga-
nizaci6n del Canal se ha hecho acreedora a una Llave Maestra de las
Esclusas del Canal de Panami y un certificado en el Grado de Maxima
Humanista. El Tte. Cnel. Richard L. Hunt (a la derecha), hizo la entrega
en agasajo al cual asistieron compaileros y amigos de Kathleen para cele-
brar su jubilaci6n tras 43 afios de servicio en el Canal. A la izquierda
aparece Walter D. Bjorseth, octavo Vicepresidente de Finanzas para el
cual ha trabajado la Srta. McGuigan durante su. carrera de servicio que
comenz6 como mecan6grafa en la Divisi6n de Contabilidad y terminal
ahora despu6s de muchos aiios como funcionaria encargada de asuntos
administrativos.


Hamblin H. Sisnett no puede ocultar su satisfacci6n al hojear la edici6n
de verano de 1977 del PANAMA CANAL REVIEW. Empleado de la imprenta
de Mount Hope y La Boca por 43 afios, ha sido tip6grafo para el
REVIEW durante los iltimos 13 afios de su larga carrera. Sisnett, que se
jubila el 19 de julio, comenz6 a trabajar a los 15 afios como mensajero
y a trav6s de los afios ha llegado a convertirse en uno de los mAs duchos
tip6grafos de la imprenta. El dice que siente orgullo especial en trabajar
para el REVIEW y que consider que con cada nueva edici6n la revista
se hace mis interesante y atractiva. Sisnett y su esposa Iris proyectan
vivir en la ciudad de Panama cuando 61 se jubile y piensan "cogerlo
suave", pero lo que si asegura es que se apuntara en la lista de
suscripciones al REVIEW.

Certificaci6n de Juntas Medicas


Los doctors Phillip Vaughn
Akers y H. Dodge Engleman, del
cuerpo medico del Hospital de
Coco Solo han culminado con todo
6xito los exAmenes orales y escritos
r.equeridos para certificaci6n por las
respectivas juntas examinadoras en
sus especializaciones m6dicas.
El Dr. Akers, que ha sido cer-
ficado en Medicina General por la
Junta Americana de Medicina Ge-
neral de Filadelfia, Pennsylvania,
tiene licencia para ejercer en Ten-
nessee, Florida y la Zona del Canal.
Nacido en Kentucky, el Dr. Akers
recibi6 su titulo universitario de
Cumberland College en Williams-
burg, Kentucky, su maestria de post-
grado de la Universidad de North-
ern Iowa en Cedar Falls, Iowa, y
su titulo en medicine de la Uni-
versidad de Tennessee en Memphis
en 1970. Como m6dico titulado, fue
escogido para cursos de adiestra-
miento en el Programa de la Fun-
daci6n Nacional de Ciencias y
asisti6 a las universidades de Long
Beach y Eastern Illinois.
De 1971 a 1972, hizo su in-
ternado m6dico de asignaciones
rotativas en el Hospital Gorgas,
luego su residencia en medicine in-
terna en la misma instituci6n de
1972 a 1975 y posteriormente, fue
miembro del cuerpo m6dico del
Gorgas de 1975 a 1976.
Antes de su llegada al Hospital
Gorgas en 1971, el Dr. Akers prest6
servicios en el Hospital SiquiAtrico
e Institute de Investigaciones de
Tennessee en Memphis.
Entre sus pasatiempos favorites
se cuentan la fotografia submarine,
los trabajos de revelado fotografico
a colors, la historic natural, y los
sistemas de electr6nica y alta fide-
lidad.
El Dr. Akers y su esposa, Ma-


rianne, tienen dos hijos: Derek y
Kevin, de 6 y 3 afios. El Dr. Akers
es miembro de la Asociaci6n MB-
dica Istmefia de la Zona del Canal.
El Dr. Engleman, acreditado por
la Junta Americana de PrActica
Familiar, naci6 en Salina, Kansas.
Complete sus studios de premedi-
cina en la Universidad de Kansas
en Lawrence, Kansas, obteniendo su
titulo con honors en Zoologia y
realizando luego sus studios de
medicine en la Universidad de
Kansas en Kansas City. Durante su
estadia en la Universidad de
Kansas, el Dr. Engleman pas6 su
segundo afio de medicine como es-
tudiante del program de intercam-
bio en la Universidad de las Fili-
pinas en Manila y parte de su 61-
timo afio en la Universidad de las
Indias Occidentales en Kingston,
Jamaica.
El Dr. 'Engleman hizo su inter-
nado m6dico en el Hospital Gorgas
de 1970 a 1971 y luego, en vez de
realizar la traditional residencia
m6dica, complete dichos requisitos
mediante sus trabajos de postgrado
y cursos continuados de educaci6n
m6dica, recibiendo el Premio de
Reconocimiento para M6dicos de la
Asociaci6n M6dica Americana. Sus
pasatiempos favorites estan relacio-
nados con la zoologia y las ciencias
naturales.

YMCA Dara Taquigrafia
El lunes comienza un curso de
repaso de 4 semanas en taquigra-
fia Gregg en el YMCA de Balboa.
No es un curso para principian-
tes sino teoria de. repaso con en-
fasis en gramalogog y frases. Se
ofrecerA prActica de dictado a velo-
cidades progresivas.
Las classes seran de 7 a 9 de la
noche los lunes y jueves.


Con la estruendosa explosion de 69,000 libras de dinamita-la
explosive mis grande registrada en la historic del Canal de Pana
isla "No Name" se convirti6 en una inmensa pila de escombros. E
la operaci6n final en la fase terrestre de perforaci6n y voladura d
yecto de ensanchamiento del tramo de Gamboa de la Divisi6n d
gado, que se inici6 en noviembre del afio pasado. Las operacio
dragado para sacar el material resultante de la explosion se inicia
el otoiio. La isla "No Name" se encuentra en la ribera oeste del
al extreme norte del tramo y al sur de la curva Mamei. El pi
terminado mejorarA la seguridad en el Canal cuando grandes na
encuentren y crucen en el Area y al mismo tiempo facilitara la prep
de horarios de trAnsitos.

Mostrando orgullosamente un Premio por Actos o Servicios Especiales
del Canal de Panama aparece Concepci6n Gonzalez, operario de equipo
de perforaci6n de la Divisi6n de Dragado quien fue objeto de reconoci-
miento official por haberle salvado la vida a un compaiiero de trabajo.
Mientras 61 y John J. Montell trabajaban sobre una balsa portaexplosivos
en la ribera de la Isla Santa Cruz, Montell se inclin6 para inspeccionar
una tuberia en la plataforma. En ese moment la estela dejada por un
barco que pasaba dio con tanta fuerza contra la balsa que Montell cay6
al agua y se golpe6 en la cabeza, quedando aturdido e indefenso. Gonza-
lez rapidamente salt6 al agua y lo sac6 a flote, pero la abrupta y rocosa
ribera no le permiti6 sacar a la victim hasta la orilla de modo que lo
mantuvo a flote hasta que llegara ayuda. Junto con el premio, GonzAlez
recibi6 un cheque por $500.

Primer Ciclo de Curundi y para los
grades 10-12 en la Escuela Secun-
daria de Balboa. En la costa Atlin-
tica, los estudiantes podran matricu-
larse para los grades 7-12 en el
Primer y Segundo Ciclo de Crist6-
bal. Las horas de matricula seran
de 8 a 11 am. y de 1 a 3:30 p.m.
Tener a la mano el boletin de la
iltima escuela a la cual asisti6 el
estudiante facilitara enormemente
la selecei6n de cursos y la ubica-
ci6n de grado para el estudiante.
Los padres definitivamente debe-
rAn acompaiiar a los estudiantes.
Universidad de la Zona del Canal
Los estudiantes que deseen in-
gresar a la Universidad de la Zona
del Canal podran matricularse en
la oficina de la Universidad a par-
tir del 27 de junio hasta el 12 de
agosto. Hasta el dia 5 de agosto el
horario de matriculas sera de 7:30
a 11:30 a.m. y de 1 a 3:30 p.m.
Desde el 8 de agosto cambiara el
horario y las matriculas se efectua-

en el Edificio de Asuntos Civi-
les o con la Escuela Secundaria
de Crist6bal en Coco Solo para
pedir una cita. Los padres deberan
estar preparados para mostrar los
certificados de nacimiento de los
solicitantes de kindergarten o primer
grado y prueba de ciudadania para
todos los solicitantes que declared
ser ciudadanos de los Estados Uni-

Sra. Fftriia A. Watts, quien pronunci6 el discrso de despedida de la
Univensdi6d de la Zona del Canal en 1977. El Dr. Glen E. Murphy, Rector
de la Universidad, hace entrega de la medalla a la Sra. Watts, como
graduada sobresaliente en aprovechamiento acadimico y como ciudadana.
La Sra. Watts tiene un promedio de A en todas las materials universitarias
de cridito y pronunci6 el discurso de despedida a nombre de sus com-
paileros en la ceremonia de graduaci6n el 19 de junio. Ademis recibi6
el Premio Dorothy Moody por Excelencia en Estudios de Ingl6s que se
otorga anualmente al graduando mas sobresaliente en inglis de la Uni-
versidad. George Broyles, official del senado estudiantil particip6 en el

Exposici6n Artistica

Hay en U. de la Zona
Actualmente estan en exhibici6n
las creaciones artisticas de tres es-
tudiantes de la clase avanzada de
arte de la Universidad de la Zona
del Canal. Dicha exposici6n puede.
apreciarse en el Centro de Recur-
sos de Aprendizaje (Biblioteca) de
dicha casa de studios.
Mark Asman, Margaret Kunkle y:
SGary Illund ban terminado 2 aiios
de studios universitarios en la Zona
y actualmente se preparan para con-
tinuar sus estudios artisticos.
La exposici6n' contiene 6leos y
dibujos a lApiz y carboncillo. Se in-
vita al piblico a visitar la galeria
para que pueda apreciar estas mag-
nificas obras durante junior y julio
de 7:30 a.m. a 8 p.m. de lunes a
viernes.
Ademas, en el edificio principal
se estin exhibiendo otros trabajos
artisticos ejecutados por los estu-
diantes de. las classes de arte du-
rante el semestre de primavera.

Advierteni Precauci6n

Las Vias Respiratorias
Actualmente se estA experimen-
tando una ligera epidemia de mo-
lestias en las vias respiratorias, pro-
bablemente de origen viral que,
segin observaciones m6dicas afecta
tanto a nifios como adults. Los sin-
tomas son fiebre, escalofrios, dolo-
res de cabeza moderadamente in-
tensos, de garganta, musculares y
abdominales. Las molestias usual-
mente duran de 3 a 4 dias y como
tratamiento se aconseja tomar aspi-
rina o tylenol, abundancia de li-
quidos y much reposo.
Se recomienda dicho tratamiento
a pacientes con los sintomas citados,
pero si la fiebre continma mas de
3 dias o si la condici6n del paciente
empeora, debe consultarse con un
medico.
Esperamos que adoptando estas
medidas se pueda aliviar un poco
el recargo de trabajo que general-
mente ocurre en estos casos en las
instalaciones de salubridad.
