A Week To Remember

Okla., 2 weeks ago to compete as
Miss Balboa, Canal Zone-1976-
for the title of Miss Teenage
America-1976.
She did not bring back the title
when she returned last Sunday but
she did bring memories enough to
last a lifetime of seeing new places,
making new friends, doing new
things and the special memory of
dancing with teenage idol, Mac
Davis, on a nationwide TV show.

facing your body.

is deep in your purse so it cannot
be lifted out without your no-
ticing it.
Everyone can use extra money
during the holidays, so do not let
pickpockets and purse snatchers
turn your hard-earned cash into
their ill-gotten gains.


Also gifts. Too many to even
remember exactly in the excite-
ment of telling about her trip but
they include the wardrobe she
wore on the TV show, cosmetics,
books, beach bags, tote bags,
gloves, shirts, pocket socks, pon-
chos, diaries, autograph books, a
set of dictionaries, an air rifle and
a tube of Oklahoma crude oil. So
many gifts, in fact, it cost $40 in
-overweight charges to fly them
home.
The week of glamour and ex-
citement climaxed on the flight
back to the Canal Zone when an
airline stewardess provided proof
positive of Miss Balboa's celebrity
status by asking Kathy for her
autograph.
Kathy and the other national
contestants were named lifetime
members of the Miss Teenage
America Sorority and will be
listed in Who's Who of Teenagers,
U.S.A.
Catherine Durden, Miss Hono-
lulu, was the winner of the Miss
Teenage America title.

Coco Solo Hospital

Physician Addresses

Medical Congress
Dr. Juan Jose Chiari C., a rheu-
matologist on the staff of Coco
Solo Hospital, made a significant
contribution to the III Bolivarian
and I Venezuelan Congress on
Rhemnatology held last week in
Caracas, Venezuela.
Dr. Chiari's address on "Sys-
temic Lupus Erythematosus" was
termed "vibrant and very inter-
esting" by the Caracas press.

'76 Canal Zone

CFC Closes Out

Above Goal
The 1976 Canal Zone Com-
bined Federal Campaign closed
last week with contributions reach-
ing almost $12,000 over the goal
of $384,600.
Just about every agency-mil-
itary and civilian, Panama Canal
and non-Panama Canal-exceeded
100 percent of its campaign goals,
and contributions were still coming
in to add to the $396,514 collected
as of November 15.
Contributions to the Combined
Federal Campaign will be used to
support the 23 participating agen-
cies of the Canal Zone United Way
and the four organizations of the
International Service Agencies dur-
ing the coming year.


All-Stars Host

Kolts of Miami

In Shrine Bowl
The Canal Zone Little League
football all-stars will play host in
Balboa Stadium tomorrow night to
the K-Land Kolts of Miami in the
7the annual Shrine Bowl benefit
game.
All proceeds will go to the
Shriners' crippled children's trans-
portation fund.
Canal Zone Gov. H. R. Parfitt
will be on hand to crown the
Shrine Bowl Queen during a pre-
game ceremony. Half time activi-
ties will include a precision drill
team demonstration by girls from
Cristobal High School and the
hilarious antics of the Abou Saad
clowns. Refreshments will be on
sale.
Tickets are available at the gate
for $3 and $2 for reserved seats
and $1 for general admission.
This will be the third year the
Florida team has journeyed to the
Isthmus to participate in the Shrine
Bowl game.
Game time is 7 p.m.


Power Reduction Quota

Gov. H. R. Parfitt has an-
nounced that Panama Canal em-
ployees living in the Canal Zone
exceeded the Presidential goal for
electrical power reduction in the
first quarter of fiscal year 1976.

Eugene Johnson was reelected
president of the Pedro Miguel
Civic Council in elections held
November 11.
Other officers and representatives
are Cleveland Roberts, first vice

corresponding secretary; Hubert
Thompson, representative; and
Cecil Springer, alternate represen-
tative.
Webster Marshall, Claude Bur-
gess and George Ford were named
representatives to the Congress of
Latin American Civic Councils.
Elected on November 12 to
serve 2-year terms on the Santa
Cruz Civic Council were Joseph
Stennett, Vincent King, Philip
King, Alvin Barrett and Harris

The Santa Cruz Civic Council
members will elect new officers the

Gamboa residents elected Joe
F. Bradberry president of the
Gamboa Civic Council.

and September was 18.9 percent
less than was used those months
in fiscal year 1973, the baseline
period for comparison. President
Ford has called for energy reduc-
tions of 15 percent from fiscal year
1973 consumption.
Electrical usage for employee
residents in this quarter amounted
to a saving of 5,975,200 kilowatt-
hours from the 1973 level. This is
the energy equivalent of 14,938
barrels of Bunker C fuel, amount-
ing to $153,000 in fuel costs saved.
While congratulating the Pan-
ama Canal employees and their
families on their outstanding rec-
ord, Governor Parfitt pointed out
another important way the public
can help at home in the energy
crunch. Peak power demand at
mid-day-from about 10 a.m. to 2
p.m.-taxes the electrical generat-
ing resources of the Canal. At
these times, generating units which
use large quantities of a mbre
costly fuel must be brought in
line.
Reducing residential power de-
mand during this mid-day period
is especially useful. Employees and
their families are asked to do all
they can to lower home consump-
tion during these hours. Here are
some ways you can help:
-Cut off your water heater dur-
ing the mid-day peak hours.
-Use your washer and dryer be-
fore or after the mid-day period.
-Have your main meal in the
evening, and cook earlier in the
morning or later in the afternoon.
-Cut off as much air-condition-
ing as possible in the peak hours.
-Turn off unnecessary lights
and electrical appliances.
By taking these steps, you will
save appreciably on your monthly
electricity bill, as well as help
beat the mid-day power peak. If
you have suggestions for other
ways to reduce the mid-day power
demand in the home-or on the
job-please pass them on to Dr.

Annual Thanksgiving

Observance Set for
10 a.m. Nov. 27
The annual community Thanks-
giving Observance will be held at
10 a.m., Thursday, November 27,
at the Balboa High School Audi-
torium.
Gov. H. R. Parfitt will read the
Presidential Thanksgiving Procla-
mation and the Honorable Guthrie
Crowe, U.S. District Judge, will
give the Thanksgiving address.
Music is to be provided by the
79th Army Band and the St. Mary's
Glee Club.
The observance is sponsored by
the Pacific Religious Workers' As-
sociation to give people of all
faiths an opportunity to join in
thanking God for the benefits He
has bestowed on us.
For most Americans, the ap-
proach of the Thanksgiving season
spurs memories of family get-
togethers, complete with turkey
dinners, cranberry sauce and prump-
kin pies.

Faster than many mothers can
remember where they hid the fam-
ily's important documents, Jackie
Gilbert can put her hands on her
son's birth certificate and tell a
caller that he was born at 3:23
a.m., May 24, 1951, and that
Dr. Teddy Arias signed the cer-
tificate.
But then, as keeper of the keys
for some 286,000 birth and death
certificates maintained in the Canal
Company's Office of Vital Statis-
tics, she has an edge on other
parents.
Formally known as Jacqueline
C. Gilbert with the official title of
Registrar of Vital Statistics, Jackie
issues, files and maintains birth
and death certificates for every-
one who is born or dies in the
Canal Zone. The records in her
files date back to 1904 and grow
at a rate of about 1,500 births and
400 deaths a year.
Jackie, who has 25 years' serv-
ice with the Canal organization,
has worked in the Vital Statistics
Office since 1966.
An activity of the Health Bu-
reau, the office was originally in
the Administration Building. Now
it is located in the old Gorgas
Hospital Admitting Office. This is
an important bit of information
for the steady flow of civilian and
military personnel searching for
a birth certificate so they can get
married, obtain a passport or enter
college; or a death certificate to
help resolve legal problems in-
volving money, property or in-
surance claims.
Jackie was born in Astoria, N.Y.
She has lived in the Canal Zone
since 1940, when her father came
down to work for the old Building
Division. Although she has lived
in Balboa most of her life, her
father worked on the Atlantic side
for a few years so she is a grad-
uate of Cristobal High School.
She married Capt. John F. Gil-
bert, Assistant Balboa District
Police Commander, 2 months be-
fore he joined the force in 1950.
The Gilberts live in Balboa with
two of their five children: Michael,
15, and Catherine, 10. Two sons,
John, 24, and Stephen, 21, are
married and living in the United
States and a third son, Robert, 19,
is a sophomore at St. Mary's Uni-
versity in San Antonio.


Double Features

Now Being Offered

At Canal Theaters

Double features have come to
the Canal Zone.
The two-for-the-price-of-one at-
tractions that movie fans dote on
arc being scheduled in the Balboa
and other Panama Canal theaters.
In Balboa on Tuesday, Novem-
ber 25, High Plains Drifter is
scheduled for 6:15 p.m. followed
by Play Misty for Me at 8:05 p.m.
A true movie addict could make
a triple feature out of it by stay-
ing through the second showing of
High Plains Drifter that begins at
9:50 p.m.
There will be no change in the
general admission price.

Education Course
The University of Alabama and
the Canal Zone Division of Schools
announce a graduate level, three
credit course in career education
which will begin on Monday, De-
cember 1.

U.S. Air Force Academy


To Accept Women in '76


About 100 to 150 women cadets
will be accepted into the Air Force
Academy Class of 1980 which en-
ters June 28, 1976.
Young women and men inter-
ested in attending the Air Force
Academy should contact Lt. Col.
John Banasick, USAFR, at 52-
2695 or 52-7896; or Lt. Col. Wil-
liam De La Mater, USAFR, at
52-6528 or 52-7870, who are U.S.
Air Force Academy Liaison Offi-
cers for the Canal Zone and Latin
America. They serve as admissions
counselors to students who are in-
terested in applying to the Acad-
emy.
Women became eligible for mil-
itary academies when President
Gerald R. Ford signed the measure
into law October 7, 1975. Academy
officials are urging qualified young
women to apply immediately for
appointments. The academy must
receive all nominations from Con-
gressmen and other sources not
later than January 31, 1976.
Women will receive bachelor of
science degrees and commissions
as Air Force second lieutenants
when they are graduated. Women
and men cadets will participate in
a common training program, except
where there are physiological dif-
ferences.
Women will be housed in Van-
dcnberg Hall dormitory but will
be in an area separate from the


men. During the initial years they
will be directly supervised by wom-
en air training officers.
On the academic side, they will
be able to take any of the 21
academic majors offered by the
school. They are also eligible to
belong to the 69 cadet extracur-
ricular organizations covering aca-
demic and recreational pastimes
from skiing to aviation clubs.
Essentially the same physical
examination currently being used
for commissioning of women in the
Air Force will be used for women
cadet applicants. Women's exam-
inations will be scheduled by the
Department of Defense Medical
Examination Review Board the
same as for all academy appli-
cants.
The physical aptitude examina-
tion (PAE) for women, changed
slightly from the men's, will test
flexibility, agility, coordination, en-
durance and strength.
The Office of Admissions and
Registrar has maintained a list of
women who have applied for ad-
mission, or who have written for
admissions information. There have
been about 600 inquiries. These
young women will be contacted
and informed they may now apply.
Information on admissions pro-
cedures for women will also be
mailed to high schools.

Ex-C.Z. Resident To Ride Future Retirees
Can Hear Talk on


Horses Coast-to-Coast Dothan, Alabama


Next summer may find former
Canal Zone resident Ann "Pinky"
Allen Nobles riding in the longest
horse race in history.
According to the magazine
"Keeping Pace With the Pasos,"
published by the American Asso-
ciation of Owners and Breeders of
Peruvian Paso Horses, Mrs. Nobles
is expected to be one of 200 riders
in the coast-to-coast Bicentennial
Grand Horse Race. The limited-
entry race is to begin around June
in New York State and finish in
California by November. It will
cover more than 3,000 miles.
Each rider in the Bicentennial
Race will be permitted two horses
to start, but no replacement of
mounts will be allowed once the
race is on. Mrs. Nobles will ride
"Alejandro" and "Trueno," Peru-
vian Paso geldings chosen because
of the breed's special gait, said to
be easy on the rider and advan-
tageous in distance events.
Long years of training and ex-
perience lie behind her decision
to enter the Bicentennial event.
As a youngster, she received basic
English riding instruction and
training in formal dressage and
jumping in Germany, where her
father was stationed with the U.S.
armed forces. At the age of 11
she raced horses on the Busetta
Race Track at Tripoli, Libya, and


Little Theater To Present

Chamber Music Program
The Isthmian Chamber Music
Society will present a musical pro-
gram from Baroque to modern at
7:30 p.m., tomorrow, in the Cris-
tobal Little Theater on the At-
lantic side.
Elizabeth Leigh and Sarah Low-
rey will participate as singers, Car-
men Granadino and Melanie Lake
as flutists, and Emily Butcher as
accompanist.
The public is invited.


Los Rios Pool Schedule

Changes for Tuesdays
Los Rios Swimming Pool will be
closed for night swimming on
Tuesday evening until further
notice.
The yearly appearance of moths,
which seem to be attracted by
light, cause itching and a rash on
the affected persons. At present,
several cases of affected bathers
have been reported.
The new hours of operation on
Tuesday will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Revivers Quadrille Ball
The Revivers Quadrille Group
wishes to will hold its first anni-
versary ball, tomorrow, at the St.
Christopher's Auditorium, 10th St.
Parque Lefevre, Panama City.
Music will be furnished by Profes-
sor Eric Garcia and his Progressive
Five.


Benefit Show Planned
For Nov. 26 at BHS
"Show Time 1975" will be pre-
sented by Vera Bomford and her
students at the Balboa High School
Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., Novem-
ber 26.
This will benefit the Cultural
Department of the Interamerican
Women's Club which sponsors art
and music scholarships. Tickets
can be obtained at the door, from
club members and from the Vera
Bomford School of Dance.

From 1964 to 1968, Pinky and
her family lived in the Canal Zone,
where she became familiar with
the Paso breeds. She and her Paso
stallion won numerous ribbons in
local events.
She graduated from Balboa High
School in 1966 and in 1968 at-
tended the Pacific Coast School of
Equestrian Research at Badger,
Calif. A year later, she was head
riding instructor at the University
of Ohio, where she supervised 20
riding instructors and was respon-
sible for the care of 75 horses.
Since 1970 she has given her at-
tention to competitive and en-
durance rides in the eastern United
States, including some 100-mile
events.
Pinky and her husband Joseph
now own a small horse farm near
Bayville, N.J. Nobles, who is ac-
tive with the New Jersey Trail
Ride Association and serves on the
Executive Committee of the Ocean
County Horse Council of Tom's
River, N.J., will assist his wife
during the Bicentennial Race.

tral and South America, Dr. Chiari
also proposed the establishment of
a Society of Rheumatologists of
Central America and the Carib-
bean. The proposal was approved
unanimously.
Dr. Chiari represented the So-
ciety of Rheumatologists and the
Social Security Hospital of Pan-
ama at the Congress.
He has served at Coco Solo Hos-
pital since December 1974. He
resides with his wife, Iris, in Ur-
banizaci6n Linares, Panama City.

Thanksgiving

The Balboa and Coco Solo su-
permarkets will be closed on
Thanksgiving Day, November 27,
but will be open on Friday, No-
vember 28.
The Balboa and Margarita Serv-
ice Center cafeterias will operate
their normal 24-hour schedules
during the entire holiday weekend.
The Ancon Drive-Inn Restau-
rant will be closed on Thanks-
giving but will operate its normal
holiday hours from 11 a.m. to
10:30 p.m. on Friday.
Gasoline stations will operate
normal hours on Wednesday and
Friday, but reduced-hour holiday
schedules on Thursday. Bowling
alleys will be open during normal
Sunday schedules on Thursday and
Friday.
Optical shops will operate nor-
mal hours except on Thursday, the
official holiday.
All other food and small mer-
chandise sales units will be closed
on both Thursday and Friday.

Rainbow City Elementary School
science project "Living and Grow-
ing Things."
The saga of "Kindie" began
when the kindergarten teacher,
Mrs. Viola De La Garza, was ex-
plaining to her class that animals
have mothers and fathers just as
children do. Then to chickens.
A chicken's father is a rooster and
its mother is a hen. Then to eggs,
and then ..
Finally stumped by the explicit
questions kids ask, Mrs. De La
Garza decided a show-and-tell
session was in order.

After a weekend in the interior,
she brought back two fertilized
eggs from the Agricultural School
in Divisa and had the children
gently place them in an incubator.
It was October 7 when she told
the youngsters that the chickens
would hatch in about 3 weeks.
Such suspense. The children
kept close watch, peering into the
incubator at every opportunity,
and turning the eggs four or five
times a day.
Word of the project spread and
teachers and students from the
entire school visited the kinder-
garten classroom to hear about
the project. Even high school stu-
dents and parents stopped by.
Finally at 9 a.m., 21 days later,
the class heard a tiny peep. Like
five anxious fathers outside a ma-
ternity room, they hovered over
the incubator as the chick slowly
pecked its way out of its shell.
And 95 minutes later "Kindie" was
born.
Now, even more visitors are
coming to see "Kindie" as her
foster parents provide the tender
loving care "living and growing
things" require.
Anticipation remains, high be-
cause the second egg is still in the
incubator and the children hope-
although Mrs. De La Garza says
it is unlikely at this late date-that
they will soon hear another peep
signaling the arrival of a second
chick they can feed and care for.


SCN Television

To Go Off Air

For 2-day Period

For the first time in almost 20
years of service to the Canal Zone
community, SCN Television will
go off the air for a 2-day period
to permit major modifications to
its control equipment.
Following sign-off Sunday, SCN-
TV's engineering section will be-
gin revamping the entire control
room complex to accommodate the
latest state-of-the-art equipment.
There will be no television pro-
graming offered Monday or Tues-
day of next week.
In addition, SCN-TV will substi-
tute other programs for many reg-
ular shows starting next Wednes-
day. A normal program schedule
will resume on November 30. No
programs will be lost during this
transition week as they will be
seen the following week, but the
transition will allow SCN-TV to
fall 1 week behind in AFRTS pro-
gram material; that hopefully will
prevent delays in receipt of pro-
grams from AFRTS Los Angeles.
Shipping delays have caused
periodic non-receipt of programs
and resulted in on-air substitutions
at the last minute. These delays
have largely been due to a change
in Department of Defense mail-
ing instructions whereby airmail
may no longer be used between
AFRTS and SCN. First class mail-
ing of programs has not proved
consistently reliable, so an addi-
tional week is being introduced
to permit late program arrivals
without affecting the published
SCN-TV schedule.
Some Thanksgiving bonuses are
in the offing for SCN-TV viewers
next week. The Monday Night
Football Game between Kansas
City and Dallas will be aired in
color at 12:20 Thanksgiving after-
noon and another NFL contest be-
tween Pittsburgh and Houston will
be offered Friday, November 28,
at 12:30 p.m., also in color. Spe-
cial Thanksgiving shows include
The Mouse on the Mayflower
Wednesday at 3 p.m.; Thanks-
giving Treasure Wednesday at 6:45
p.m.; The Burl Ives Thanksgiving
Thursday at 10:15 a.m.; and
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Two live football games via
satellite have been scheduled by
SCN-TV.
Tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. Ohio

energia equivale a $14,938 barriles
de combustible Bunker C, con un
ahorro on efectivo de $153,000.
A la vez que felicita a los em-
pleados del Canal de Panama y a
sus familiares por este sobresa-
liente record, el Gobernador Par-
fitt sefiald otra manera important
como el pdiblico puede ayudar en
sus casas durante esta crisis ener-
g6tica. La demand maxima del
mediodia, entire las 10 a.m. a
las 2 p.m., grava las fuentes ge-
neradoras de energia del Canal.
Para esa hora, hay que poner
a funcionar unidades generadoras
que usan grandes cantidades de
combustibles mis cars.
Es especialmente 6til el reducir
las demands de electricidad resi-
dencial durante el mediodia. Se
solicita a los empleados y a sus
families hacer todo lo possible para
reducir el consume dom6stico du-
rante esas horas. H6 aqui algunas
de las maneras c6mo usted puede
ayudar:
-Apague el calentador de agua
durante el mediodia.
-Use la lavadora y la secadora
antes o despu6s del mediodia.
-Sirva la comida principal en
la noche y cocaine temprano en la
mafiana o tarde en la tardc.
-Use lo menos possible el aire
acondicionado al mediodia.
-Apague las luces y aparatos
el6ctricos no necesarios.

Mucho mAs rApidamente de lo
que muchas madres pueden re-
cordar d6nde guardaron los docu-
mentos importantes de la familiar,
Jackie Gilbert toma el certificado
de nacimiento de su hijo y le dice
al que pregunta que naci6 a las
3:23 a.m. del 24 de mayo de 1951
y que el Dr. Teddy Arias firm el
certificado.
Pero pose una ventaja sobre
todos los demas padres de fami-
lia y es que se encarga de unos
286,000 certificados de nacimien-
to y de defunci6n que mantienen
las Oficinas de Estadisticas Vita-
les de la Compafiia del Canal de
PanamA.
La Sra. Jacqueline C. Gilbert,
tiene el titulo official de Registra-
dora de Estadisticas Vitales y se
encarga de confeccionar, archivar
y mantener los certificados de na-
cimiento y de defunci6n de todos
los que nacen o mueren en la
Zona del Canal. Los registros que
Ileva en sus archives datan de
1904 y crecen a raz6n de 1,500
nacimientos y 400 muertes al afio.
Jackie, quien ha estado emplea-
da durante 25 aiios con la empre-
sa del Canal, trabaja en la Oficina
de Estadisticas Vitales desde 1966.
Dependencia de la Direcci6n de
Salubridad, dicha oficina estuvo ra-
dicada originalmente en el Edifi-
cio de Administraci6n. Actualmente
esta en la antigua Oficina de Ad-
misi6n del Hospital Gorgas. Cons-
tituye important fuente de infor-
maci6n para una corriente cons-
tante de civiles y militares que
buscan su certificado de nacimien-
to para poder casarse, obtener pa-
saporte o ingresar a la universi-
dad. Tambien lo es para aquellos
que necesitan un certificado de
defunci6n para ayudarse a resolver
problems legales relacionados con
dinero, propiedades o reclamos de
seguros.
Jackie naci6 en Astoria, Nueva
York. Reside en la Zona del Canal
desde 1940, cuando su padre vino
a trabajar con la antigua Divisi6n
de Construcci6n. Se gradu6 en la
Escuela Secundaria de Crist6bal.
Se cas6 con el CapitAn John F.
Gilbert, Ayudante del Comandante
del Distrito de Policia de Balboa,
2 meses antes de que 6ste entrara
a la Divisi6n de Policia en 1950.
Los esposos Gilbert resident en
Balboa con dos de sus cinco hijos:
Michael, de 15 afios y Catherine,
de 10. Otros dos hijos, John, de 24
afios y Stephen, de 21, estin ca-
sados y resident en los Estados
Unidos. Otro hijo, Robert, de 19
afios, es estudiante de segundo afio
en la Universidad St. Mary, en
San Antonio, Texas.

En la Zona del Canal se estan
ofreciendo doubles programs.
Dichas atracciones, dos peliculas
por el precio de una, estan siendo
ofrecidas a los fanaticos del cine
en Balboa y en los demas teatros
del Canal de PanamA.
En el Teatro de Balboa, el mar-
tes 25 de noviembre, se ha pro-
gramado la presentaci6n de High
Plains Drifter (La Venganza del
Muerto), a las 6:15 p.m. y sera
seguida por Play Misty for Me
(Obsesi6n Mortal), a las 8:05 p.m.
Los verdaderos fanaticos del
cine, podrnn convertirlo en un tri-
ple program, si se quedan a ver
otra vez La Venganza del Muerto,
cuya proyecci6n se iniciara a las
9:50 p.m.
Los precious de admisi6n gene-
ral seguiran siendo los mismos.

Preparan Curso Educativo
La Universidad de Alabama y la
Division de Escuelas de la Zona
del Canal han anunciado el inicio
el pr6ximo lunes 19 de diciembre
un curso de post grado para peda-
gogos (Career Education) que darA
tres creditos. Para mayor informa-

Habra Damas en Academia


De Fuerza Area de E. U. A.


De 100 a 150 mujeres cadetes
serin aceptadas en la Clase de
1980 de la Academia de la Fuerza
Area, que ingresari el 28 de
junio de 1976.
Los j6venes de ambos sexos in-
teresados en ingresar a la Acade-
mia de la Fuerza A6rea deben co-
municarse con el Teniente Coro-
nel John Banasick, en el 52-2695 6
52-7860; o con el Teniente Coro-
nel William De La Mater, en el
52-6528 6 52-7870, quienes son los
Oficiales de Enlace de la Academia
de la Fuerza A6rea para la Zona
del Canal y Am&rica Latina. Sir-
ven como consejeros de admisi6n
para los estudiantes que estAn in-
teresados en hacer solicitud de
ingreso a la academia.
Las mujeres se convirtieron en
elegibles para ingresar a las aca-
demias militares, cuando el Presi-
dente Gerald Ford firm dicha ley
el 7 de octubre de 1975. Los fun-
cionarios de la academia exhortan
a las muieres que tengan las debi-
das calificaciones a que hagan su
solicitud inmediatamente.
Cuando se gradien, las mujeres
obtendrAn su titulo de licenciadas
en ciencias y el rango de subte-
niente de la Fuerza A6rea.
Las damas se alojarin en el dor-
mitorio del Vandenberg Hall, pero
en un Area separada de los hom-
bres. Durante los primeros afios,
ser'n supervisadas directamente
por mujeres oficiales de adiestra-
nmiento.


En el lado acad6mico, podrin
tomar cualquiera de los 21 cursos
superiores que ofrece la escuela.
Tambi6n serin elegibles para per-
tenecer a cualquiera de las 69 en-
tidades extracurriculares que van
desde academicas hasta pasatiem-
pos, como clubes de aviaci6n y de
esqui.
Los aspects de liderazgo que
se utilizan para calificar las activi-
dades extracurriculares compren-
derin tambi6n las actividades fe-
meninas. Incluirin los deportes de
mujeres, posiciones de liderazgo
escolar y el pertenecer a organis-
mos tales como Muchachas Guias,
Girls' Nation, Asociaci6n de Muje-
res Cristianas (YWCA) y Patrulla
Civil A6rea.
Esencialmente, el mismo exa-
men fisico que se utiliza actual-
mente para el ingreso de las muje-
res en la Fuerza A6rea se utilizarA
para las mujeres cadetes que hagan
solicitud.
El examen de aptitud fisica para
las mujeres, que varia ligeramente
del de los hombres, comprobara la
flexibilidad, agilidad, coordinaci6n,
resistencia y fuerza.
La Oficina de Admisi6n y de
Registro ha mantenido una lista
de las muieres que han hecho so-
licitud de admisi6n, o que han es-
crito solicitando informaci6n. Ha
habido cerca de 600 consultas.
A estas j6venes se les informarA
que ya pueden hacer sus solici-
tudes.

Una ex resident de la Zona del
Canal se prepare con entusiasmo
para participar en la mis larga
carrera de caballos que se recuer-
de en la historic de la hipica.
Segin la revista "Keeping Pace
With the Pasos", publicada por la
Asociaci6n Americana de Propie-
tarios y Criadores de Caballos Pe-
ruanos de Paso, se espera que Ann
"Pinky" Allen Nobles sea uno de
los 200 jinetes que participant en
la Gran Carrera Hipica del Bicen-
tenario que se correri de costa a
costa en los Estados Unidos. La
carrera, limitada en el nimero de
participants, comenzaru apr6xi-
madarrente en junio en el Estado
de Nueva York y terminari en
California en los alrededores de
noviembre. Cubrird m- s de 3,000
millas.
Se permitirA en este event hi-
pico del Bicentenario que cada ji-
nete present dos caballos para
iniciar la carrera, pero una vez
iniciada no se aceptaran reempla-
zos. La Sra. Nobles montarA a
"Alejandro" y "Trueno", escogidos
debido al buen paso de esta raza,
que permit un mas c6modo de-
senvolvimiento del jinete, y a su
capacidad para events de aliento.
Su decision de competir en el
event hipico del Bicentenario esti
respaldada por sus largos arios de
adiestramiento y experiencia. Cuan-
do muy joven tom6 classes bAsicas
del estilo ecuestre ingles en ejerci-
cios y salto en Alemania, en don-
de su padre prest6 servicios con
las Fuerzas Armadas de los Esta-

Pinky Nobles

das en el Hipodromo Busetta de
Tripoli, Libia, y pocos afios des-
pu6s gan6 un torneo alemin de
caceria de zorra.
Entre 1964 y 1968, Pinky estu-
vo viviendo con su familiar en la
Zona del Canal y aqui se familia-
riz6 con los caballos de paso. Mon-
tando caballos de paso gan6 mu-
chos premios en events locales.
Pinky se gradu6 en 1966 de la
Escuela Secundaria de Balboa y
en 1968 asisti6 a la Escuela de
Investigaci6n Ecuestre de la Costa
del Pacifico en Radger, California.
Un afio mais tarde ejercia como
instructor jefe de equitaci6n en
la Universidad de Ohio, en donde
supervisaba a 20 instructors de
equitaci6n y era responsible del
cuidado de 75 caballos. Desde
1970 ha puesto su mira en compe-
tencias ecuestres de aliento en el
este de los Estados Unidos, inclu-
yendo algunos events de 100
mills.
Pinky y su esposo Joseph poseen
actualmente un pequefio haras cer-
ca de Bayville, Nueva Jersey.
Nobles, quien es miembro active
de la Asociaci6n de Aficionados
Ecuestres de Nueva Jersey y se
desempefia en el Comit6 Ejecuti-
vo del Consejo del Condado Ocean
de Tom's River, en Nueva Jersey,
ayudara a su esposa durante la
carrera del Bicentenario.
Los esposos Nobles dedicarin
los pr6ximos meses a prepararse
ellos mismos y a las dos cabalga-
duras para los rigores de este even-
to. Cuando llegue el gran dia, los
viejos amigos de Pinky en la Zona
del Canal estarin deseandole "bue-
na suerte" en esta nueva, pero
seguramente no filtima, aventura.

"Kindie" es la prueba viviente
y creciente del xito del proyecto
cientifico "Cosas que Viven y Cre-
cen" de la Escuela Primaria de
Rainbow City.
La historic de "Kindie" se inici6
cuando la maestra de kindergarten
Sra. Viola De La Garza, explicaba
a los nifios de su clase que los
animals tienen mama y papa, lo
mismo que los niios. Respecto a
los pollitos, el papi es el gallo y
la mamli es la gallina. Sigui6 ex-
plicando los huevos y asi sigui6
la cosa.
Luego, animada por las explici-
tas preguntas de los nifios, la Sra.

todo cuidado en una incubadora.
Era el 7 de octubre y les dijo
a los nifios que los pollitos nace.-
rian en unas 3 semanas.
Hugo gran suspense. Los nifios
vigilaron de cerca los huevos, ins-
peccionAindolos siempre que habia
una oportunidad y volteindolos
cinco o seis veces al dia.
El proyecto vino a saberse y
maestros y estudiantes de toda la
escuela visitaron el kindergarten
para enterarse de 61. Hasta estu-
diantes de la Escuela Secundaria
y padres de familiar pasaron por
alli.
Finalmente, a las 9 a.m., 21
dias despu6s, la clase escuch6 un
ligero pio pio de un pollito. Al
igual que los padres ansiosos fuera
del sal6n de maternidad, corrie-
ron a la incubadora en el momen-
to que un pollito se salia del cas-
car6n. Y 95 minutes mas tarde
naci6 "Kindie".
La expectaci6n sigue en gran-
de porque el segundo huevo estA
todavia en la incubadora y los
nifios esperan, aunque no asi la
Sra. De La Garza, quepronto es-
cucharin otro pollito piando, con
lo que advendri otro ser que ellos
se proponen alimentar y cuidar.

Durante 2 Dias
Por primera vez en casi 20 afios
de servicios a la comunidad de la
Zona del Canal, la estaci6n de te-
levisi6n SCN estari fuera del aire
por 2 dias para efectuar modifica-
ciones a su equipo de control.
Al cerrar sus transmisiones el do-
mingo, la secci6n de ingenieria de
SCN-TV comenzarA a renovar todo
el complejo del cuarto de control
con el fin de instalar equipo su-
inamente modern. No habr-i pro-
gramas en SCN-TV el lunes y
nartes de la pr6xima semana.
Adem/is, SCN-TV, substituiri
otros programs por muchos es-
pectticulos regulars, a partir del
pr6ximo miercoles. La programa-
ci6n regular se volverA a poner en
vigor el 30 de noviembre. Duran-
te ee e period de transici6n no se
perdera program alguno, pues po-
drin verse en la siguiente semana,
pero dicha transici6n permitiri a
SCN-TV retrasarse 1 semana con
respect al material de AFRTS,
con lo que se espera se eviten las
demoras en el recibo de los pro-
gramas de AFRTS de Los Angeles.
Las demoras en los embarques
han causado peri6dicamente que
no se reciban los programs y haya
habido que hacer substituciones de
iltimo minute. Estas demoras so
han debido en gran parte a un
cambio en las instrucciones sobre
los envios por correo ordenado por
el Departamento de Defensa, se-
grn las cuales ya no se puede uti-
lizar el correo a6reo entire AFRTS
y SCN.
Se estin preparando algunas es-
pecialidades del Dia de Acci6n de
Gracias para los faniticos de
SCN-TV, la pr6xima semana. El
Juego de Fitbol Americano del
]unes en la noche, entire .Kansas
City y Dallas sera televisado a todo
