A new branch has been estab-
lished in the Engineering Division
to place greater emphasis on the
prevention of earth slides in Gail-
lard Cut.
The new unit has been named
the Geotechnical Engineering
Branch and is headed by Anthony
P. Mann, previously Chief of the
Civil Engineering Branch.
One of the most vital functions
of the branch is the Bank Stability
Surveillance Program which Mann
planned and organized in 1969
upon the recommendation of a
board of consultants headed by
Dr. Arthur Casagrande, a noted
Harvard University soils expert.
The purpose of the surveillance
program is to detect signs of slide
potential so that corrective meas-
ures can be taken to minimize
slide possibilities.
Slides have been a problem to
the Canal since before the water-
way was opened in 1914 and they
still remain a problem-but to a
lesser degree - despite modern
equipment and engineering tech-
niques. This point was driven
home sharply in October 1974
when a massive earth slide oc-
curred about 1 mile north of Gold
Hill in Gaillard Cut. It was the
Canal's largest slide since 1931 and
resulted in one-way traffic in the
immediate slide area during the
lengthy excavation work. This was
a very active period for the Canal

Plan Elections

For Nov. 1I, 12
The Latin American Civic Coun-
cils on both sides of the Isthmus
will hold elections next week.
Elections will be held on No-
vember 11 in Pedro Miguel and
Rainbow City and on November
12 in Santa Cruz.
Ballots for the elections will be
delivered to residents' homes and
picked up either later the same
day or the following day.
Candidates for election are:
Pedro Miguel Civic Council:
Eugene A. Johnson, Philmore
Alexis, Egbert M. Best, Raymond
George, Gloria Llewelyn, George
Ford, Hubert Thompson, Christo-
pher Cot and Alfonso S. Charles.

The Rainbow City Civic Coun-
cil is divided into two districts.

employees called on to quickly
clear the earth slide.
Prior to 1969, there was some
slope surveillance in the Cut but
it was a small effort, consisting
mostly of a few monuments, con-
trol points and baselines. It be-
came apparent that more had to
be done in 1969 when a series of
ground cracks were discovered ex-
tending deeply down into slopes
directly adjacent to the Canal in
the Hodges Hill area.
Dr. Casagrande and other pro-
minent U.S. consultants were
summoned to the Isthmus to study
the area. In the meantime, the
Engineering Division carried out a
crash drainage program consisting
of diversion ditches, pipes, general
grading and scattering lime to
absorb moisture.
Next came the establishment of
the surveillance program, which
included the installation of instru-
ments to detect movement and a

Achieve Goals

For 1976 CFC
On the 25th day of the
1976 Combined Federal Campaign
Drive, contributions from civilian
and military personnel had reached
$341,391, 88.8 percent of the over-
all goal for Federal agencies on
the Isthmus.
All Panama Canal bureaus have
now reached at least 100 percent
of their goals and four non-Pan-
ama Canal agencies have also
passed that mark.
Personnel who have not yet
made their contributions may do
so through their unit keymen.
Contributions to the CFC are
used to support the 23 participating
agencies of the Canal Zone United
Way and four organizations of the
International Service Agencies.

C.Z. Student To Compete



In Miss Teenage Pageant


Fingers are crossed all over the
Canal Zone today in a good luck
signal to Kathy Kelleher who is
in Tulsa, Okla., competing in the
annual Miss Teenage America
Pageant.
The weeklong pageant opened
this morning and will end with
the awarding of the 1976 title on
the evening of Saturday, Novem-
ber 15.
This year-for the first time since
the pageant was originated in
1961 - girls living outside the
United States were eligible to
enter the competition.
Kathy did. So did 200 Canal
Zone girls and thousands of teen-
age girls from Bermuda, Iran,
Japan, Belgium, Iceland, Puerto
Rico, England, West Germany,
Mexico, the Philippines, the Neth-
erlands, Guam, Italy, Okinawa,
Spain, and Korea.
After 27,000 overseas candidates
were screened at pageant head-
quarters in Dallas, Tex., Kathy
was among the 25 semifinalists in
the Candidate-at-Large Overseas
Competition.
In letters containing the heady
news that they had reached semi-
finalist status, the candidates were
asked to take and return a written
test that had been mailed to their
school principals, to fill out a
questionnaire, and to forward un-
retouched photographs and veri-
fied scholastic standings.
On the basis of test scores (75
percent) and information on the
questionnaire (25 percent), the
group was narrowed down, and
Kathy was among the 10 finalists.
And then there was one.
Calling from Dallas, Mrs. Judith
D. Houghton, Executive Vice Pres-
ident and General Manager of the
pageant, asked a speechless Kath-
leen Marie Kelleher "Do you ac-
cept the title of Miss Teenage Bal-
boa, Canal Zone-1976?"

Now she and 45 candidates are
competing for the coveted title
of Miss Teenage America.
The candidates will be 'judged
on scholastic achievement meas-
ured by another written examina-
tion that counts for 35 percent;
poise, appearance and awareness
measured by two sessions of inter-
views and discussions with 20
judges that counts for 45 percent;
and individual accomplishment
measured by 2-minute presenta-
tions in any category. Kathy will
play a piano medley.
Kathy, the daughter of Mrs.
Ruth T. and Mr. Maurice S. Kel-
leher, is a young woman whose
talents and interests seem endless.
As she skims over a list of activi-
ties that would earn her the title
Miss Busiest Girl in the Canal
Zone if there were such a contest,
her expressive Irish-blue eyes
dance with the excitement of being
a candidate for Palm Bowl Queen,
sadden at the memory of the aged

This was a common sight on the Pacific side of the
Isthmus last week. The heavy rains that fell Thurs-
day set a new 1-hour rainfall record for the Pacific
side. Between 3 and 4 p.m., 4.82 inches of rain fell,
the heaviest rainfall in 1 hour on the Pacific side in


the 75 years that records have been kept. Many cars
were stalled in deep puddles in the Canal Zone and
Panama City. Barely visible on right is a woman
scurrying from the downpour and the wave action
created by the auto.


and orphaned she meets in her
charity work, and turn dreamy at
the thought of how the next 7 days
may change her life.
An honor student, the Balboa
High School junior is a member
of the cheerleading squad, a mem-
ber of the charity club, sings in
the glee club choir, and works on
the school newspaper and year-
book.
She belongs to the Young Christ-
tian Organization, Young Chris-
tian Society and plays guitar for
a five-member group that plays at
"folk" masses in her church.
She contributes to the better-
ment of the community by coun-
seling younger children on the
misuse and danger of drugs,
smoking and drinking as a mem-
ber of "Straight Scene."
In addition to studying piano,
guitar, ballet and gymnastics,
Kathy finds time for her hobbies:
photography, boating and water
skiing.
As involved as she is with her
school, church and community
projects, Kathy's close-knit, loving
family remain the most important
part of her life.
In a home often filled with five
brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles,
cousins, and friends, a mother
needs help and Kathy's mother
sees to it that Kathy is never too
busy for the household chores that
are a must for all of the Kelleher
girls. They can cook, bake, clean,
wash and iron with a skill and
enthusiasm that would shame
many career housewives.
In fact, Mrs. Kelleher boasts
that Kathy can cook a turkey
dinner for 20 people as easily as
most 16-year-olds can make a tuna
sandwich.
Kathy and Mrs. Ann Kelleher,
her aunt and official chaperone,
flew to Tulsa, yesterday. For what
may be the most glamourous, excit-
ing week in Kathy's life, the
pageant is paying for first-class
transportation, food, hotel expenses
and the telecast wardrobe the can-
didates will wear during the na-
tionally televised final night of the
pageant.

Election Results
The Cristobal-Margarita-Brazos
Heights Civic Council has reported
the first results of the U.S. Civic
Council elections held on Novem-
ber 3.
Eight candidates were elected to
serve on the council for 2 years.
They are, in the order of votes
received, Molly Williford, Edna
O'Donnell, Charlene James, Rich-
ard G. May, Leonard E. Bell, Paul
V. Rozmeski, Albert M. White and
Ardice Bell.
Alternates are Marta White, Carl
Reynolds, Hohert J. Best and Gil-
bert Ferro.
The election of council officers
will be held in tDecember.

Dorothy R. Yost celebrates her
10th anniversary as manager of
the Balboa Heights cafeteria next
month. Manager she is, but she is
also the Jilll of all trades" who
takes on whatever else the daily
rush hours bring. Dot has been
seen fixing the coffee machine,
clearing a table, filling an order,
delivering a message and, on at
least one occasion, hand carrying a
special sandwich to a very harassed
secretary. Dot first came to the
Canal Zone in 1940 to visit her
sister who was married to a Canal
Zone policeman. During the visit
which stretched out to 6 months,
she went to work at the Fort Clay-
ton Exchange where she met
Theodore Yost, her future hus-
band. She went home to Columbus,
Ohio, to plan a wedding for after
Yost's discharge from the Army
but December 7, 1941, found him
aboard a ship headed for the
States. When war was declared,
the ship received new orders and
Never did reach a U.S. port. It was
not until 1942 that he was able to
get home for the wedding. The
Yosts decided to return to the
Canal Zone in 1947-this time with
three small children. Ted worked
for the Navy until 1950 when a
reduction in force sent them back
to the States. But 2 years later
they were in the Canal Zone again.
This time for good. Dot first went
to work at the Clayton Exchange;
in 1959 she accepted a job as food
supervisor at the Albrook Ex-
change Restaurant and then in
1965 transferred to her present
position with the Canal organiza-
tion. The Yosts have three chil-
dren, all graduates of Balboa High
School, and four grandchildren.
Their one daughter, Frances Hern,
was born in the Canal Zone,
married a Zone boy, has a son and
daughter of her own, and owns

Reduced Prices
Croton, Hibiscus, Ixora and other
garden plants are on sale at re-
duced prices at the Summit Gar-
dens and its outlets at Diablo and
Mount Hope for Canal Zone res-
idents who would like to land-
scape or improve the landscaping
of their quarters' areas.
The sale began on November 2
and will continue through Novem-
ber 29. Each week six different
varieties of the plants will be sold
at special reduced prices.
Plants on sale from November 9
to 15 are Croton Porto Rico Broad
Leaf, Hibiscus sp. Variegata, Hi-
biscus Velvet Red, Croton Yellow
speckled Broad Leaf, Croton Porto
Rico Narrow Leaf and Coffee Rose.
From November 16 to 22, the
plants will be Croton Porto Rico
Broad Leaf, Croton Cup Leaf,
Copper Leaf, Ixora Coccinea, Ixora
Macrothyrsa and Hibiscus Large
Single Pink.
The final week of the sale, No-
vember 23 to 29, Croton Porto
Rico Broad Leaf, Croton Porto
Rico Narrow Leaf, Croton Yellow
Speckled Broad Leaf, Hibiscus sp.
Variegata, Hibiscus Velvet Red
and Ixora Coccinea will be on
sale.
While the supply lasts, plants in
quart cans will be sold at 55 cents
each and in gallon cans at 85
cents each.
Hours of operation are: Sum-
mit Cardens: Monday through Sat-
urday from 7 to 11:30 a.m. and
12 noon to 3:30 p.m. and Sunday
from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 12 noon
to 4 p.m.; Diablo: Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday
from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 12 noon
to 5 p.m.; Mount Hope: Monday
through Friday from 7 to 11:30
a.m. and 12 noon to 3:30 p.m.


the beauty shop at the YMCA. The
two Yost boys live in the United
States: Richard in Jacksonville,
Fla., with his wife, Wanda, and a
son, and Theodore in Houston with
his wife, Karen. There is a lot to
running the Balboa Heights Cafe-
teria that does not meet the cus-
tomer's eye. In addition to feeding
125 customers a day, not counting
morning and afternoon coffee
breaks. Dot and her staff are re-
sponsible for preparing special


dinners when the Governor and
business guests do not have time
to leave the Board Room for lunch.
And the coffee-and-cookie inter-
missions at Civic Council meetings
are also catered by the cafeteria.
Dot says she loves her job and
would never work where she could
not spend her days with lots of
people in spite of the occasional
customers who insist she 'is to
blame when the price of coffee or
cigarettes goes up.


Mail Service to Canada Is Suspended

The U.S. Postal Service has ad- that country. Canal Zone post offi-

Leonor Arrocha, a student of Alberto Einstein Institute, and James
Patrick Conley II of Balboa Elementary School were the winners of the
Columbus Day essay contest sponsored by the Inter-American Women's
Club of Panama. This annual contest is open to sixth grades students
of Panama City and Pacific side Canal Zone schools.

Taking Spanish Lessons


Some 4,000 students of primary
schools in the Canal Zone are re-
ceiving daily classes in Spanish
given by educators who stress cul-
ture as well as vocabulary and
syntax.
The program of Spanish instruc-
tion began 20 years ago but in the
past 2 years has grown in impor-
tance and today incorporates vari-
ous aspects of geography, history
and folklore of the people of Pan-
ama. The classes are given to all
students of the first six grades for
20 minutes each day. Teachers of
Spanish in all 14 primary schools
are graduates of universities of the
United States and have degrees
from the University of Panama.
Dr. Marcela Cabal de Diaz, co-
ordinator of the program, attended
primary school in the Escuela de
Dolega, some 10 miles outside the
city of David, in Chiriqui Pro-
vince. Later she studied at Normal
Juan Demostenes Arosemena in
Santiago de Veraguas where she
earned her teaching degree.
Dr. Diaz subsequently entered
the teachers college at the Uni-
versity of Panama, receiving a
master's degree. Continuing her
work in education, she attended
the University of Chicago where
she earned a degree in teaching
and finally, she traveled to Spain
and completed work on a doctorate
at the University of Madrid. As
part of her work there, she pre-
sented a thesis, "Teaching Spanish
in the Primary Schools in the
Canal Zone."
She began her teaching career
with the old Escuela de Enseilanza
Especial de PanamA, which later
was renamed Instituto Panamefio
c:( Habilitaci6n Especial.
Next, she was appointed teacher
in the Instituto Nacional and after-
wards moved to the Division of
Schools where she was served for
21 years, teaching Spanish at all
levels. She began as a teacher in
Balboa Elementary School and for
several years was in charge of

Canal Zone and worked for the
Canal organization for 40 years
before retiring from the office of
the Comptroller in 1972, transited
the Panama Canal for the first
time last week. Just before ending
a 6-week visit with Canal Pilot
Capt. Theodore M. Kirkhy, the
awful truth came out, and his host
had oldtimer Orr aboard the tanker
"Ogden Willemette" for a transit

retirement home in Tallahasse, Fla.

to register their direction. Other
types of equipment also have been
used and the entire surveillance
program expanded to cover numer-
ous regions that could turn into
trouble spots.
In addition, the Geotechnical
Engineering Branch is responsible
for the stability of locks, dams
and building foundations, the set-
tlement of structures, the control
of bank erosion and geotechnical
requirements relating to break-
waters, earthwork, dredging and
blasting. It conducts subsurface
investigations, including planning
and supervision of core drilling
and laboratory testing programs.
Mann, a native of Boston, Mass.,
holds a bachelor of science degree
in civil engineering from West Vir-
ginia University and has been with
the Canal organization since his
graduation in 1952. During World
War II, he served with the 504th
Parachute Infantry Regiment and
was wounded at Anzio during the
Italian campaign.
He has had extensive experience
with soils mechanics, bank stability
and design of excavation of slopes
during the widening of Caillard
Cut. Mann organized the Engi-
neering Division Diving Team
which, using SCUBA gear, per-
forms underwater inspections, pho-
tography, testing and sampling of
materials for engineering and geo-
logical purposes.
He and his wife, Anna, have
one daughter, who attends school
in Kent, Ohio. Mann's outside in-
terests include skin and SCUBA
diving. He is a prize-winning

Films Nov. 13
The Panamanian North Ameri-
can Cultural Center (CEPA) will
show two documentary films on
Thursday, November 13. The Con-
quest of Darien was filmed in
1971 by a group of English ex-
plorers and scientists who success-
fully crossed the Darien as part of
a journey that took them from
Canada to Argentina. The second
film to be shown is A Way for

Una nueva dependencia ha sido
crcada en la Divisi6n de Ingenieria
a fin de darle mayor 6nfasis a la
prevcnci6n de los deslizamientos
en el Corte Gaillard.
La nueva dependencia se llama
Ramo de Ingenieria Ceot6cnica y
esta a cargo de Anthony P. Mann,
quien anteriormente so desempe-
fnaba como Jefe del Ramo de Inge-
nieria Civil.
Una de las funciones mas impor-
tantes de la nueva oficina es velar
por la ejecuci6n del Programa de
Vigilancia de la Estabilidad de las
Orillas del Canal, que Mann or-
ganiz6 en 1969 respondiendo a re-
comendaci6n formulada por un
cuerpo de consultores encabezado
por el Dr. Arthur Casagrande.
Los deslizamientos han consti-
tuido un problema para la va acuA-
tica desde antes de que el Canal
fuera abierto en 1914 y aun sigue
siendo un problema no precisa-
mente de menor importancia, a pe-
sar de las thenicas y equipo mo-
dernos. La prueba de ello esti muy
a la vista. Apenas en octubre de
1974 se produjo un gran desliza-
miento aproximadamente 1 milla
al norte del Cerro de Oro en el
Corte Gaillard. Era el mayor des-
lizamiento ocurrido en el Canal
desde 1931 v como resultado de
ello se debi6 de establecer trinsito
de una via por el sector inmediato
durante la prolongada etapa de
excavacion.

tor del Cerro Hodges.
El Dr. Casagrande y otros pro-
minentes consultores de los Esta-
dos Unidos viajaron al Istmo a es-
tudiar el Area. Para entonces la Di-
vision de Ingenieria habia iniciado
un program que abarcaba zanjas
de desviaci6n, tuberias, trabajos en
los declines y diseminacidn de cal
para absorber la humedad.
Posterionrente se estableci6 el
Program de Vigilancia, que in-
cluye la instalaci6n de instrumen-
tos para detectar los movimientos
y un sistema de inspecci6n visual
de posibles grietas. En las cuestas
se perforaron huecos en done se
instalaron inclindmetros electr6ni-
cos para detectar muy leaves movi-
mientos de tierra y su direcci6n.

En el vigesimo quinto dia desde
que empezaron las actividades de
la Campafia Federal Combinada
de 1976, las contribuciones del
personal civil y military ascendian
a $341,391, o sea el 88.8 por cien-
to de la meta total de las agencies
Federales en el Istmo.
Todas las Direcciones del Canal
de Panama ya han logrado alcan-
zar el 100 por ciento de sus metas
y cuatro agencies que no son del
Canal de PanamA tambi6n han
sobrepasado dicha marca.
El personal que todavia no haya
hecho su contribuci6n puede ha-
cerlo a traves de los representantes
en sus respectivas dependencias.
Las contribuciones a la CFC se
utilizan para mantener 23 agencies
participants de la Senda Unida
do la Zona del Canal y cuatro or-
ganismos de las Agencias de Ser-
vicio Internacional.

Para Participar en un Certamen


Los residents de la Zona del
Canal tienen desde hoy sus mira-
das y esperanzas de buena suerte,
en ]a ciudad de Tulsa, Oklahoma,
en donde una representante local,
Kathy Kelleher, compite por el ti-
tulo de Miss Adolescente Am6rica.
El concurso de 1 semana de du-
racidn abri6 esta mafiana y con-
cluiri el pr6ximo sibado 15 de
noviembre en horas de la noche.
Este ano, por primera vez desde
que el concurso fue establecido en
1961, se ha permitido la partici-
paci6n de bellezas norteamericanas
provenientes de fuera de los Esta-
dos Unidos.
Kathy concurs. Y junto a ella
lo hicieron 200 bellezas de la Zona
del Canal y miles de adolescents
en Bermudas, Iran, Jap6n, B6lgica,
Islandia, Puerto Rico, Inglaterra,
Alemania Occidental, M6xico, las
Filipinas, las Antillas Neerlandesas,
Guam, Italia, Okinawa, Espaia y
Corea.
Despues de examiner los fonnu-
larios de inscripci6n y otros aspec-
tos de las 27,000 concursantes de
ultramar en Dallas, Texas, Kathy
fue escogida entire 25 semifinalis-
tas del certamen.
En cartas mediante las que se
comunicaba la grata nueva de que
habian sido escogidas como semi-
finalistas, se pidi6 a las candida-
tas que retiraran y enviaran de
vuelta un examen escrito que se
habia remitido a los directors de
sus respectivas escuelas, en el que
se incluia un cuestionario y que
enviaran ademis fotografias no re-
tocadas junto a copias de sus cr6-
ditos acadnmicos.
BasAlndose en el resultado de los
exAimnes escritos (75 por ciento) y
de las respuestas al cuestionario
adjunto (25 por ciento), se hizo
una nueva eliminatoria y Kathy
fue escogida entire 10 finalists. Al
Ilamarla desde Dallas, la Sra. Ju-
dith D. Houghton, Vicepresidenta
Ejecutiva y Gerente General del
Concurso, pregunt6 a la sorpren-
dida Kathleen Marie Kelleher:

Kathy fue recuperando su con-
fianza en si misma y contest "Si".
Desde hoy ella y otras 45 can-
didatas estan compitiendo por el
codiciado honor de ser Miss Ado-
lescente America.
Las candidates seran juzgadas
con base a sus meritos acad6mi-
cos, que se pondran a prueba en
un examen escrito que representa-
rt un 35 por ciento de la califica-
ci6n en el concurso; confianza en
si misma, apariencia y conocinien-
tos, facultades que se valorarin en
dos sesiones de entrevistas y con-
versaciones con 20 jurados y que
representan el 45 por ciento, y
habilidades individuals, rue so
apreciarAn en una presentaci n de
2 minutes. Kathy ejecutarA en esta
parte del concurso un potpourri de
piano.
Kathy, hija de Maurice S. Kelle-
her y Sra. Ruth T. de Kelleher,
es una jovencita cuyas virtudes e
inquietudes parecen infinitas.
La belleza de Balboa se desem-
pefia en tal cantidad de activida-
des, que bien podria ganar cl ti-
tulo de Miss Adolescente Ocupada
de la Zona del Canal, si se verifi-

en profundas charcas que se formaron en la Zona del
Canal y en la ciudad de Panama. Apenas visible a la
derecha se aprecia una mujer tratando de protegerse
de la lluvia y de la ola de agua producida por el

como estos 7 dias que comienzan
hoy podrAn transformer su vida.
En la Escuela Sccundaria de
Balboa, Kathy no se conforma con
ser una estudiante de cuadro de
honor. Es codirectora de la barra
de su escuela, forma part del
Club de Caridad. canta para el
coro del club y colabora con el
periOdico y cl anuario.
Pertenece a la Organizaci6n de
J6venes Cristianos, a la Sociedad
de J6venes Cristianos y toca la gui-
tarra con un grupo de cinco j6ve-
nes que amenizan en las misas de
su iglesia.
Contribuye al mejoramiento de
su comunidad ofreciendo conseje-
ria a menores sobre el peligro de
las drogas, el fumar y el beber,
en su calidad de miembro del
"Straight Scene".
A pesar de dedicar buena part
de su tiempo a tomar classes de
piano, guitarra, ballet y gimnasia,
Kathy tiene aun tiempo para sus
pasatiempos: la fotografia, el esqui
acuitico y pasear en lancha.
Para Kathy lo mis important
en su vida es el amor a su familiar.
En una casa frecuentemente llc-
na por sus cinco hermanos, tios y
tias, primos y amigos, la ama de
casa necesita ayuda. Y la madre
de Kathy siempre cuenta con la
ayuda de esta y de sus hcrmanas
en la ardua tarea domustica. Ellas
pueden cocinar, hornear, limpiar,
lavar y planchar con tal entusias-
mo y habilidad que asombrarian
a la experimentada ama de casa.
De hecho, afirma la Sra. Kelle-
her, Kathy puede cocinar un pavo
para 20 personas con igual facili-
clad que la mayoria de los adoles-
centes se preparan un emparedado
de atin.
Kathy vo6l ayer a Tulsa acompa-
fiada de su tia y chaperona official,
Sra. Ann Kelleher. Para lo que serti
la mais excitante experiencia de
ui vida hasta ahora, la organiza-
ci6n del concurso ha pagado trans-
porte de primera clase y esth co-
rriendo con todos los gastos de ali-
ncentaci6n, hotel y el vestuario quc
usarin las concursantes durante la
semana, incluyendo el que exhibi-
ran las candidates en la final del
concurso, que sera televisado a
todos los Estados Unidos.

El proximo mes Dorothy R. Yost
cumple 10 afios de trabajar como
gerente de la cafeteria de Balboa
Heights. Es una gerente, pero
tambien es uma "hace de todo" que
se encarga de las tareas que trade
el diario bregar. Se ha visto a Dot
reparando la miquina de caf6,
limpiando mesas, tomando 6rde-
nes, dando mensajes, y, al menos
una vez, Ilevando un emparedado
especial a una secretaria atribu-
lada. Dot primero lleg6 a la Zona
del Canal en 1940 para visitar a
su hermana que estaba casada con
mn policia de la Zona del Canal.
Durante su visit, que se prolong
por 6 meses, trabaj6 en el Almac6n
de Fort Clayton, en donde cono-
ci6 a Theodore Yost, su future es-
poso. Regres6 a casa en Columbus,
Ohio, a planear su boda que se
fij6 para despues de la salida de
Yost del Ej6rcito. Pero el 7 de
diciembre de 1941 lo encontr6 a
bordo de un barco que se dirigia
a los Estados Unidos. La declara-
ci6n de la guerra cambi6 los pla-
nes de Yost, quien recibi6 nuevas
6rdenes que le impidieron llegar
entonces a puerto de los Estados
Unidos. No fue sino hasta 1942
que pudo Ilegar a casa para su
boda. Los Yost decidieron regre-
sar a la Zona del Canal en 1947-
esta vez con tres nifios pequefios.
Ted trabaj6 para la Fuerza Naval
hasta 1950 cuando se produjo una
reducci6n de fuerzas que lo envi6
nuevamente a los Estados Unidos.
Dos afios mAs tarde estaban de re-
greso en la Zona del Canal. Esta
vez para siempre. Dot primero fue
a trabajar al Almacen de Clayton.
En 1959 acept6 un trabajo como
supervisor de alimentos en el Res-
taurante de Albrook y luego, en
1965, fue trasladada a su actual
posici6n. Los Yost tienen tres hi-
jos. Hay muchos detalles involu-
crados en la operaci6n de una ca-
feteria que no se ven a simple

El crot6n, el hibisco (mejor co-
nocido como papo), la ixora o bu-
que de novia y otras plants orna-
mentales estan a la venta a precious
reducidos en los Jardines de Sum-
mit y en sus centros de ventas en
Diablo y Mount Hope, para los re-
sidentes de la Zona del Canal in-
teresados en hacer mejoras de jar-
dineria en las Areas donde viven.
La venta comenz6 el 2 de no-
viembre y continuarA hasta el 29
del mismo mes. Cada semana seis
variedades distintas serAn puestas
a la venta a precious reducidos.
Las plants a la venta del 9 al
15 de noviembre son el crot6n de
Puerto Rico de hoja ancha, el hi-
bisco variegata (rosa china), el
hibisco rojo terciopelado, el crot6n
de hoja ancha salpicada de amari-
llo, el crot6n de Puerto Rico de
hoja angosta y la varita de San
Jos6 o Rosa del Caft.
Del 16 al 22 de noviembre se
venderin el crot6n de Puerto Rico
de hoja ancha, el crot6n de hoja
acopada, la hoja roja, buqu6 de
novia chica y grande y el hibisco
(papo) grande rosado simple.
La 1ltima semana, entire el 23 y
el 29, se venderA crot6n de Puerto
Rico de hoja ancha, crot6n de
Puerto Rico de hoja angosta, cro-
ton salpicado de amarillo, hibisco
de la especie variegata, el hibisco
rojo terciopelado y buqu6 de novia
(ixora).
Mientras hayan disponibles, las
plants en latas de %4 se vendc-
ran a 55 centavos cada una y las
latas de 1 gal6n a 85 centavos.
Los Jardines de Summit aten-
derAn de 7 a 11:30 a.m. y de
12 m. a 3:30 p.m., de lunes a si-
lbado, y los domingos de 8 a 11:30
a.m. y de 12 m. a 4 p.m. En Dia-
)lo se atenderA los martes, midr-
coles, viernes y sAbado de 9 a
11:30 a.m. y de 12 m. a 5 p.m.
En Mount Hope se atenderA de
7 a 11:30 a.m. y de 12 m. a 3:30

Suspendido Servicio Postal a Canada


El Servicio Postal de los Esta-
dos Unidos ha anunciado que el
servicio de correos a CanadA ha
sido supendido inmediatamente de-
bido a la huelga declarada en ese


pais por los trabajadores postales.
Las oficinas de correos de la
Zona del Canal han sido instrui-
das para que no acepten envios
hacia CanadA, hasta nuevo aviso.

Niios Aprenden Espanol en


Escuelas Estadounidenses


Cuatro mil estudiantes de las
escuelas primaries de la Zona del
Canal reciben diariamente class
de espaniol, dictadas por educado-
res panamenos, en las que se hace
enfasis en la cultural panamenfa.
El Program de Espainol de las
Escuelas Primarias Estadouniden-
ses de la Zona del Canal es coor-
dinado por la Dra. Marcela Cabal
de Diaz.
El program se inici6 hace 20
ailos, pero en los /ltiimos afios ha
ido aumentando en importancia, y
hoy dia trata de incorporar aspec-
tos de la geografia, la historic y
el folklore, a fin de ensefiar a los
nifios lo que es PanamA, explica la
Dra. Diaz. Las classes de espaniol
se dictan diariamente a todos los
alumnos de los primeros a los sex-
tos grados. Veinte minutes diarios
son dedicados al espailol.
Todos los profesores que dictan
los cursos de espafiol en las 14
escuelas primaries estadounidenses
son egresados de universidades de
los Estados Unidos y tienen titulos
de la Universidad de Panama.
La coordinadora del program,
Dra. de Diaz, hizo sus studios
primaries en la Escuela de Dolega,
en Chiriqui. Sus inquietudes por
el magisterio la llevaron a estudiar
a la Normal Juan Dem6stenes Aro-
semena, en Veraguas, en done
obtuvo su titulo de maestra.
Posteriormente ingres6 a la Es-
cuela de Educacion de la Univer-
sidad de PanamA en donde obtuvo
su licenciatura. Continue su carre-
ra en el campo do la educaci6n
en la Universidad de Chicago, en
done obtuvo su macstria. Final-
mente viaj6 a Espaia e ingres6 a
la Universidad de Madrid, en don-
de present su tesis "La Ensefian-
za del Espafiol en las Escuelas Pri-
marias de la Zona del Canal", qiue
le mereci6 el titulo de doctor.
La Dra. Cabal de Diaz inici6 su
carrera en el magisterio con la an-
tigua Escuela de Ensceianza Espe-
cial de PanamA, que luego pas6 a
ser el Instituto Panamefio de IIa-
bilitacion Especial (IPIIE).
Posterionrente cl Ministcrio lde
Educaci6n la nombr6 como profe-
sora en cl Instituto Nacional, y
mins tarde ingres6 a la Divisi6n de
Escuelas de la Zona del Canal en
done ha ensefiado espafiol en to-
dos los niveles escolares. Su pri-
mera experiencia como educadora
en la Zona del Canal fue en ]a


Escuela Primaria de Balboa. Pero
desde hace various afios tiene a su
cargo los cursos avanzados de es-
pafiol en la Secundaria de Balboa.
En agosto del present afo fue
nombrada Coordinadora de Es-
painol, y ello le ha permitido aco-
meter con mayor energia la ense-
fianza del espanol.
La Dra. de Diaz es casada con
el Dr. Tobias Diaz Blaitry, cate-
dratico de Filosofia y L6gica en
la Universidad de PanamA. Los
esposos Diaz tienen cuatro hijos:
Marcela, quien complete sus es-
tudios de doctorado en espaiol en
la Universidad de Madrid; Marit-
zel, estudiante de psicologia en la
Universidad de Rollins, en Winter
Park, Florida; Ramiro, que estudia
medicine en la Universidad de Pa-
nama, y Beatriz, quien cursa su
primaria en las Esclavas del Sa-
grado Coraz6n de Jes6s.
La familiar Diaz Cabal vive en
la ciudad de PanamA.


Elmer Orr, nacido en la Zona del
Canal y quien trabaj6 para la em-
presa del Canal por espacio de
40 afios antes de jubilarse de la
Contraloria en 1972, transit la
via acuatica por primera vez la se-
mana; pasada. Poco antes de ter-
minar una visit de 6 semanas jun-
to al CapitAn Theodore M. Kirkhy,
practice del Canal, vino a relucir
la verdad, y su anfitri6n tuvo a
Orr a bordo del cisterna "Ogden
Willemette" en transito la siguien-
to noche. Orr se ha radicado en
Tallahassee, Florida.

claborado un program educativo

Christy Carleton Sass ofrecerA
una exposici6n de pinturas al 6leo
y aguafuerte, del 8 al 26 de no-
viembre en la Galcria Panarte de
la ciudad de PanamA. La Galeria
estai localizada en la Avenida Peril.
La artist Christy Carleton Sass
obtuvo su maestria en Bellas Artes
en la Universidad de Iowa.
En los Estados Unidos ha ense-
fiado en tres universidades del
Medio Oeste y actualmente es pro-
fesora de artes en la Universidad
de la Zona del Canal, en Balboa.
En abril de 1975 sus produc-
ciones eran conocidas en Nova
Caleria, Via Argentina y formaron
parte de la Exposici6n del Aiio
Intemacional de la Mujer, que se
present en Panarte en mayo de
1975.

des de la Semana de Educaci6n celebrada en Paraiso
la semana pasada.

en las orillas del Canal y los re-
quisites geotecnicos relatives a los
rompeolas, trabajos de suelo, dra-
gado y detonaciones. Esti a cargo
de investigaciones subacuiticas, in-
cluyendo la planificaci6n y super-
visi6n de operaciones de taladro
en el fondo del Canal y de pro-
gramas de pruebas en laboratorio.
Mann, nacido en Boston, Mas-
sachusetts, obtuvo su titulo de in-
geniero en la Universidad de Vir-
ginia Occidental y ha estado vin-
culado a la empresa del Canal
desde que se gradu6 en 1952. Du-
rante la II Guerra Mundial sirvi6
con el Regimiento de Infanteria
504 de Paracaidistas.
Mann ha tenido una amplia ex-
periencia en mecAnica de suelos,
estabilidad de orillas y disefio de
operaciones de excavaci6n de la-
deras durante el ensanche del Cor-
te Gaillard. A 61 correspondi6 or-
ganizar el Cuerpo de Buzos de la
Division de Ingenieria que, em-
pleando equipo SCUBA, tiene en-
tre sus funciones realizar inspec-
ciones subacuiticas, tomar foto-
grafias, realizar pruebas y tomar
muestras de material bajo el agua
para propdsitos de ingenieria y
geoldgicos.
Es casado con Anna de Mann,
con quien tiene una hija que asiste
a la escuela en Kent, Ohio. Su
principal pasatiempo cs cl buceo.

Una nueva clinic ha sido abier-
ta en la Secci6n de Consulta Ex-
terna del Hospital Corgas. Se trata
de la Clinica "Pap", en donde se
atenderAn examenes rutinarios de
Papanicolaeu todas las tardes.
Estos examenes, que finicamente
se realizarin previa cita, se harain
s6o1 a las mujeres sanas. Las per-
sonas que est6n enfermas o mani-
fiesten otros sintomas debersn con-
tinuar recibiendo tratamiento en
las clinics apropiadas.

mente al Istmo las doctors Rhina
Escalante de Rey Prendes y Leticia
Calles de Romero, integrantes del

A la Dra. Wakeland le corres-
pondi6 el martes en la tarde expo-
ner el punto de vista de una sic6-
loga sobre los efectos de la nutri-
ci6n en la mujer, area en la cual
la funcionaria de la empresa del
Canal ha profundizado valiosos es-
tudios en el ejercicio de su pro-
fesi6n.
A este seminario, que se cele-
bra en el Hotel El Salvador She-
raton, asisten como invitadas espe-
ciales la president de la Federa-
ci6n Internacional de Mujeres Uni-
versitarias (IFUW), Dra. Elizabeth
May; la president de la Asocia-
ci6n Americana de Mujeres Uni-
versitarias (AAUW), Dra. Marjorie
Bell Chambers, y las directives de
las asociaciones de Universitarias
del Istmo Centroamericano.
La Repsiblica de Panamsa esti
representada en el conclave por
una delegaci6n de la Asociaci6n
de Mujcrcs Universitarias de Pa-
namli (AMUP).

hacerse los empleados antes de aco-
gerse a la jubilaci6n:

puede lograr un estimado de su

cina de personal en la agencia don-
de trabaja, que tiene acceso inme-
diato a su historical de trabajo.

El pasado mes de octubre se ju-
bilaron 26 empleados de la em-
presa del Canal. Los nombres, po-
siciones, lugares de empleo y afios

Curso Sobre

Instruments
El 18 de noviembre se iniciarC
un curso en la Escuela Superior
de Balboa para Piloto Instrumen-
tal. Dicho curso, que se extender
unas 12 semanas, servird para pre-
parar a los estudiantes que van a
tomar el examen escrito de la Ad-
ministraci6n Federal de Aviaci6n
(FAA), para Piloto Instrumental
que se dari al final del curso.
El costo es de $85, suma que
cubre todos los materials. La ins-
cripci6n se puede tramitar de 6:30
a 7 p.m. el 18 de noviembre, antes

CEPA Anuncia

Actividades

De Noviembre
El Centro Cultural Panameiio
Norteamericano (CEPA) inici6 ayer
su program de events culturales
para el mes de noviemnbre.
El pr6ximo jueves el CEPA ex-
hibiri dos interesantes documen-
tales. En primer t6rmino se pre-
sentara la pelicula La Conquista
del Dari6n, filmada en 1971 por
un grupo de expedicionarios Ingle-
ses que recorri6 desde el Canada
hasta Argentina. El grupo, inte-
grado por experts en estas aven-
turas y cientificos, logr6 cruzar el
Darien, tras grandes esfuerzos que
fueron cubiertos por la prensa en-
tonces y recogi6 su experiencia en
un interesante documental.en es-
paniol. Tambidn se presentara el
interesante documental Una Senda
Para Todas las Epocas.
El jueves 20 de noviembre la
periodista Mayin Correa de Men-
delson disertari sobre el tema
"C6mo se Produce un Programa
de Television". La periodista es
productora del program "Edici6n
Especial", que se transmite cada
dos lunes por el Canal 4 de Tele-
visi6n y tiene una basta experien-
cia en la material objeto de su
conferencia.
Finalmente, el jueves 27 tendrAi
lugar una exhibici6n de grabados
del artist norteamericano Werner
Drewes. Nacido en Canig, Alema-
nia, Drewes es poseedor de una
extraordinaria experiencia en la
pintura y el arte grAfico. La expo-
sici6n de obras de Drewes perma-
necera abierta en el local del
CEPA, ubicado en la Avenida
Peri, durante los restantes dias del
mes de noviembre.
Todas las actividades del CEPA
comenzarin a las 8 p.m. La entra-
da es gratis y el public esta cor-
dialmente invitado a asistir a estos
events.

Un Nuevo Servicio

Ofrece Biblioteca
Un nuevo servicio para benefi-
cio a los lectures establecera la Bi-
blioteca de la Zona del Canal a
partir del 10 de noviembre en su
biblioteca principal. El nuevo ser-
vicio de "Cambalache de Libros",
estarA a disposici6n tanto de adul-
tos como de nifios. Libros de bol-
sillo y revistas de c6micas en bue-
na condici6n serin aceptados en
canje sobre la base de uno por uno.

Festival de Artesanias
La Catedral de San Lucas cele-
braroi un festival de artesanias en
la rotonda ubicada detras de la
iglesia, de 9 a.m. a 3 p.m. el pr6xi-
