PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF CAULIFLOWER VARIETY PERFORMANCES -
WINTER SEASONS 1980 and 1981

D. S. Burgis
ABSTRACT Field Day Report

In the past 3 years, numerous cauliflower varieties have been evaluated at the
Agricultural Research and Education Center in Bradenton. In some seasons, replica-
ted tests were repeated in successive plantings as many as 5 times, starting in
October. The spring growing season of 1981 was one of the coldest on record begin-
ning with 330F readings on Jan. 3 and 12, followed with sub-freezing (as low as 28F)
on the 13th, 14th, 18th and 19th. Daily mean temperatures in 1981 continued lower
than those in 1980 through March 16. Table 1 shows the 1980 and 1981 low, high and
mean temperatures for Bradenton in the winter months of January and February.

Table 1. Comparison of mean temperatures for 1980-1981 winter growing seasons (OF).

Dec. 29 through Feb. 21
January January growing season Season
Season Mean low Mean high mean Mean low Mean high mean
1979-80 50.2 71.6 60.9 47.2 69.3 58.3
1980-81 38.3 63.9 51.1 39.8 64.5 52.2

The varieties 'Burpeeana' (Burpee), 'Early Snowball A' (Burpee), 'Rausch Early,'
'Rausch Regular' (seed of these are not available commercially), 'Self Blanching
Improved' (Moran), 'Snow Crown' (Taki) and 'Starlight' (Moran) were grown in the
same time period in both seasons. The 1980 winter test plants were set in the field
on Jan. 8, and the 1981 test was field set on Dec. 29, 1980. A comparison of the two
seasons' results is shown in Table 2.

Table 2. Response to season of cauliflower varieties grown in comparable plantings
during January-February winter seasons for 1980 and 1981.

Starlight 6.4 6.0 90.5 85.7 73 72 4 4

*One plot damaged by damp-off.

Analysis of data in Table 2 is not complete, but it appears that curd diameter
and percent of marketable yield were reduced for all varieties from 1980 to 1981
seasons.
