GUIDE TO DISEASES OF FOLIAGE PLANTS 1983 .. .

ARC-A Research Report RH-83-9

Diseases play an important part in production of tropical foliage

plants. As each year passes, some diseases may appear which have not

appeared before and others may not appear which once were common problems.

This report is a summary of diseases known to occur on foliage plants

during the past 10 years with more emphasis placed on listing newly

described or more common diseases found in the past three years. The list

does not attempt to record all diseases occurring on a species of foliage

plant nor diseases which occur on many foliage plants, such as pythiaceous

root rot diseases. Some pathogens have been renamed since they were

originally described. The most important group of fungi which falls into

this category is Helminthosporium. These pathogens are now named

Drechslera, Bipolaris and Exserohilum. Many of the accepted names of the

bacterial plant pathogens have been changed recently as well, but in most

cases are close to the original name. In cases in which the new name of

the fungus or bacterium is quite different from the older name, the older

name is given in parentheses for reference. The following list should be

used as a guide to the diseases which are likely to occur on many of the

most common foliage plants and aid in development of superior disease

control programs. There are many other publications available which answer

such important questions as what does the disease look like on the plant and

what is the best control for the disease. A list of important references

has been provided below.
