FROM THE PUBLISHERS

She glances at the photo, and the
pilot light of memory flickers in her eyes.
-Frank Deford

The technical definition of a pho-
tograph is: An image, especially a
positiveprint, recorded by a camera.
Sounds simple enough. Obviously the defi-
nition falls very short of what a photograph
actually is. After reviewing the hundreds
of photographs we received for this annual
photo issue, we were astounded once again at
the range of emotions and the breathtaking
vistas that can be captured by the camera.
Of course, it matters who's operating the
camera, and we could not be more thank-
ful to the talented photographers who con-
tributed to this "exhibition" of Guatemalan
art. Many are represented throughout these
pages, from the true professionals to the
weekend enthusiasts. Unfortunately, we
could not fit them all in, and some will
appear in future issues.
Some of these photographs are thought-
provoking, some are artful, some depict the
grandeur of mother nature, some are poi-
gnant and some-like the one below of our
dog-are simply amusing.
We hope you enjoy these images, and we
wish you all the best in this new year.

XI Paiz International Festival to start in February

'For the Love ofArt & Education'
www.fundacionpaiz.org.gt

2 011 may turn out to be the year for culture
in Guatemala. The 11th biennial Paiz Interna-
tional Festival includes an unprecedented inau-
gural concert with Central American superstars,
Grammy nominees performing with a beloved
student orchestra, a major retrospective of an
artistic giant and a fun, popular dance in La An-
tigua's own Parque Central.
The 2011 festival promises not only an ex-
citing lineup of Guatemalan and international
artists, but also a dramatic expansion of the fes-
tival itself. Antiguenos and tourists will enjoy an
amazing season of events beginning in February
and continuing through December.
The festival opens Feb. 11 with impressive
concerts. Reuniting after a 10-year absence, the
legendary Central American groups Alux Nahual
and Editus will kick off a colorful season filled
with art, music and dance.

The next day brings the opening of a retro-
spective of artist Carlos Merida at Casa Santo
Domingo in the Galeria Carlos M6rida. Saturday
evening, Ermita de Santa Cruz will be rocked by
power pianist Jorge Gomez and his Grammy-
nominated Cuban timba group, Tiempo Libre,
accompanied by La Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil.
The artists not only perform but will also lead
workshops, discussions and classes for Guatema-
lan students and artists. The Fundaci6n Paiz has
focused this festival on its essential objective: to
harness the transformative power of art and cul-
ture for a better Guatemala. -

In 1978, the incredible possibilities that
reproductive medicine could offer had not
yet been envisioned. After about 80 failed
attempts in different women, the first child
conceived through In Vitro Fertilization
(IVF) was born. Now about 4 million babies
are conceived with this technique
worldwide.
Louise Brown, the world's first "test tube
baby," was born July 25th, 1978 after an
innovative procedure performed by Dr.
Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe. Dr.
Edwards was recently honored with the
Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work.
With greater technological development,
the IVF procedure has evolved a great deal.
Since 1998 Clinica Santa Maria, a
specialized center in Reproductive
Medicine in Guatemala, has offered this
technology under the supervision of
Director Juan Francisco Solis Berciin, M.D.
Many children have been born in Guatemala
as a result of these techniques.

Attitude
There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had
only three hairs on her head.'Well,' she said, 'I think I'll braid my hair today.'
So she did and she had a wonderful day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.
'H-M-M,' she said, 'I think I'll part my hair down the middle today.'
So she did and she had a grand day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head.
'Well,' she said,'today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail.'
So she did and she had a fun, fun day.
The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her
head. 'YEA!' she exclaimed, 'I don't have to fix my hair today!' ... Attitude is everything.
