Title of grant: Developing an Online GIS Interface for the Topographic Map Collection
Project abstract (no more than 100 words):
There are approximately 300 cataloged topographic map sets in the Map & Imagery Library. For
10% of these sets, an online, world-wide, user-friendly interface will be created. It will accurately
show how many and which maps are contained in each set and be clickable such that patrons
can view the information for individual maps (title, date, longitude/ latitude, boundaries). A new
server is necessary to host this interface. Index snap-shots illustrating holdings for discrete map
sets will be linked to corresponding catalog records. A link from the snap-shot will connect
patrons to the online interface for comprehensive information.

Describe how the10% mandatory cost share will be met:
Creation of the interactive index interface by Hesham Monsef will more than meet the cost
share. Hesham will also train the OPS hire in how to create the GIS indexes for individual map
sets. Selection of the map sets to include in the project and supervision of the person hired once
they are trained will be done by Map & Imagery Library staff. Addition of links to the catalog
record will also be done by Map Library staff, though some training from the Cataloging
Department will be required.
