Drawer 599
Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 32082

Dear Mr. Crawbuck:

I am enclosing a copy of the completed State Inventory Form
for your files, which has been forwarded to Senator Robert
Williams'offloe. We have also completed and forwarded
the Inventory Nomination Form, National Register of Historic
Places. The federal form is almost identical to the state
inventory form, and was included to expedite matters.

As you can see, the description and significance portions are
simply briefs of the more detailed Information contained ina the
HABS survey and the other research reports dealing with the
house. This is due to explicit directions contained in the instruc-:
tions for filling out these forms which requires a brief and con-
cele statement only. .

I am sure Senator Williams will advise you of the progress of
the applieation toward inclusion on the Register.

If we can be of any further help in this matter please feel free
to call.*

Sincerely,

Robert H. Steinbach
Director of Research

STATE OF FLORIDA
THE CAPITOL
TALLAHASSEE 32304

TOM ADAms
SECRETARY OF STATE

September 10, 1970

Mr. Walter S. Crawbuck
52 St. George Street
St. Augustine, Florida

Dear Mr. Crawbuck:

Secretary of State Tom Adams has referred your letter of
September 8, 1970, in regard to the Rodriquez-Avero-Sanchez
House to the Division of Archives, History and Records Manage-
ment for reply.

By copy of this letter, we are requesting the assistance
of Mr. Bob 8teinbach, of the historic St. Augustine Preservation
Board, in initiating the necessary documentation of the Rodriguez-
Avero-Sanchez House on the Florida Historic Sites Inventory form
and the form for nomination to the National Register of Historic
Places. The Bureau of Historic Preservation, of this division,
is charged with the responsibility of conducting a statewide
inventory of all historic places in Florida and preparing a
statewide comprehensive preservation plan. The best examples
of our historic heritage and culture will be nominated to the
National Register of Historic Places. We are sadly lacking in
funds, personnel and other resources to carry out our historic
preservation function as expeditiously as we would like to.
It is for this reason that we are requesting the assistance of
the historic St. Augustine Preservation Board to assist us in
expediting this matter.

Your continued assistance, by making available all
information on the Rodriquez-Avero-Sanchez House to Mr. Steinbach
for relaying to us with the completed inventory and National
Register nomination form, will be sincerely appreciated.

Sincerely,

Robert Williams, Director
Division of Archives, History
and Records Management

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (if known) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The building is presently three stories in height, the ground floor of
coquina masonry construction, the second and third of wood frame
with clapboard siding. The house faces east on St. George Street
with no set-back or sidewalk. It opens to the west or back into a
landscaped patio area. At present the house can be considered early
19th century in character particularly in the framing and detailing
of the wooden upper portions of the house. The ground floor is
characteristic of Spanish masonry practices. The earliest reference
to the house is in 1761 when the owner, Rodriguez, added a large
masonry roof, to the north of his older (?) frame house using the full
balance of his property so that the addition touched the north property
line. This masonry addition formed the nucleus of the present build-
ing. By 1765 the wooden portion had evidently fallen into disrepair
and the masonry section remained as an independent building. Some- m
time in the next ten years after its purchase in 1791 by Sanchez it
was enlarged to the south to fill up the remaining half of the lot. It
seems probable at this time a second story or loft was added with a -
pitched roof to replace the old flat one. Sometime between 1813 and z
1834 the low second story was removed and the present wood framing
added. The only major alteration since that time was the replace- -
ment of the two east windows with large shop windows which in turn Mo
were removed and replaced by the present owner in 1962. c

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

z The Rodriguez-Avero-Sanchez house is a prime example of
o the evolution of a Spanish house from a small single-room
-- dwelling into the present three-story structure. It exhibits
I- the typical St. Augustine architectural feature of street front
u construction with no set-back, utilizing the entire street
Sfrontage for domicile while using the rear portion of the lot
a- for patio, garden, and "necessary. Other architectural
features of interest include wall and chimney flue-sharing
with property on the south side, a common well in the patio
Z between it and its neighbor to the south, typical Spanish
masonry practices in the ground floor walls, and early ter-
ritorial period wood framing and details on the second and
'W third floors.

Interpretatively it is important in that it forms a link in the
Avero complex of buildings, being one of several held by that
family in this area during the first Spanish Period (1565-1763).

(See Arnade 1961 for details on this complex.)
