Re: Proposed wall along St. George and Cathedral

Dear Mike:

The ornamental cast concrete wall which surrounded the property to the
west of the Cathedral was erected soon after the fire of 1887, at about the
same time as the construction of the bell tower. The tower was designed by
James Renwick, the architect of Grace Church and St. Patrick's Cathedral in
New York City and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. It is quite
conceivable that Renwick was also responsible for the wall, and if this is so,
it would lend additional justification for its reconstruction. Our historian,
Dr. A. T. Bushnell has scheduled a trip to the Catholic archive in Mandarin
next Monday in an attempt to verify this association.

In any event, the wall was taken down in 1964/65 along with the Bishop's
House, which is surrounded on the south and west, as a part of the Cathedral
renovation.

The St. Augustine Historical Society has several photographs in their
collection which clearly shows the wall along with the associated posts and
caps. This information, together with the existing sections on St. George
Street would make an accurate reconstruction quite feasible from a preserva-
tionist's perspective.

I will keep you advised of any new information that we may uncover.

Sincerely,

Robert H. Steinbach
