SAN IGNACIO TOWN, Cayo, Wednesday, December 5, 2012: The arrest and subsequent imprisonment, on remand, of Leroy Richards is reported by San Ignacio Police as the dismantling of the operations of a con-man. The activities of this alleged con-artist began to unravel with the November 26 reporting of a stolen motorcycle. Humberto Requena of a Collins Boulevard address in San Ignacio reported that sometime between 10:00 pm on Sunday, November 25 and 5:00 am on Monday, November 26, 2012, someone stole his black Melium brand motor cycle, valued at $1,594.40, from inside his yard. As he continued to maintain the not guilty plea, the case, which has gone through several adjournments, came up again up in court on Tuesday, December 4, where he changed the plea to guilty thereby bring the matter to an abrupt end. He was ordered to forthwith pay a ten thousand dollar fine or three years prison time in default of payment. Gonzalez, 18 years at the time, arrived at this juncture in his life when on December 29, 2011 a team of policemen, on mobile patrol on George Price Avenue in the Trapiche area of Santa Elena, saw him taking out something from a black knap sack and throwing it into nearby bushes. He was detained and escorted to the location where a search led to the Guatemalan BeginsServing Real Prison Time discovery of a black plastic bag containing the marijuana. The accused and the weed were transported to the police station in San Ignacio where the merchandise pushed the scale to exactly 1,732 grams or 3.82 pounds. Obviously unable to pay the ten thousand dollar fine, Gonzalez was returned to prison where he now begins the countdown to the prison time ordered by magistrate Narda Morgan. The event began on Saturday night at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. It ended on Sunday with the Belize Bar-B-Que and Food Festival 2012 at the soon to be officially inaugurated Cayo Welcome Center in the heart of San Ignacio Town. Sunday's event provided a rare opportunity for the people of San Ignacio, Santa Elena and surrounding communities along with visitors to interact within the confines of this new and impressive facility. The occasion and the facility likewise provided a spin-off boost in economic activity as local crafts people and entrepreneurs grasped the opportunity to make money. There was also the showcasing of true Belizean talent as several were the groups that took the stage to perform. Present among those in attendance were the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, Hon. Manuel Heredia ; Director of Tourism, Mrs. Cayo WelcomesThe Cayo Welcome CenterPhoto Courtesy San Ignacio Resort Hotel Laura Esquivel Frampton along with His Worship the Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, John August. While Sunday's event provided the opportunity for the community to interact many were the comments for such event to be held more often given that adequate facilities now exist in town. There was even the suggestion that, like market day, the new Cayo Welcome Center should be buzzing with economic activity and social interaction every single weekend. Given the instinctive reaction to oppose changes, there was the initial opposition to the dismantling of the outdated Coronation Park and Cultural Center to make way for the new Welcome Center. Now that the new facility is a reality very few if any are the negative comments of that which the new facility signifies and brings to the community. Congratulations are therefore in order for the Government of Belize, the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council as well as the Ministry of Tourism, the Belize Richards reportedly offered to leave the motorcycle as collateral until he returns with the money on Friday, November 30 and that was the last he saw of Richards. The accused was detained in San Ignacio on Monday, December 3. When he was searched, he was found in possession of a small quantity of marijuana. While in police custody, it is alleged that he assaulted a policeman. The accused was consequently charged with theft, handling stolen goods and possession of illegal drugs as well as assaulting a police officer in the execution of this duties. The accused, Leroy Richards 26, Belizean laborer of #26 Stanton Street, San Ignacio Town, appeared in the San Ignacio town courtroom of magistrate Narda Morgan on Tuesday, December 4, where he pled guilty the drug charge and was ordered to forthwith pay a fine of two hundred and fifty dollars in default, one month imprisonment. He pled not guilty to the theft and handling stolen goods as well as assaulting a police officer in the execution of his duties. He was offered bail in the sum of one thousand five dollars on the theft and handling stolen goods charges plus an additional one thousand dollars bail on the assault charge. He was unable to meet bail and was subsequently transported to prison. The case was adjourned until Thursday, February 28, 2013. The ball is now in the court of all of us as users of the facility to first of all ensure the we use it to socialize in an atmosphere of respect free from crime or violence. We must likewise ensure that we take care of the facility so that it can remain in service for generations of Belizeans and visitors to come. IxChel tropical Research Centre has launched a new program, The Grow to Learn Garden, at the Santa Elena Primary School here in the Cayo District. We’re starting this program with an 18 x 10 plot of land to grow herbs and vegetables. This “garden classroom”, will give students an understanding of how the local food system works and serves as a link to local farmers, and others involved in agriculture. Also growing herbs and vegetables in the same plot will educate the children about plants that serve as medicine and food. The kids will be in charge of weeding, watering and overall protecting the plants, of course with the supervision of their class teacher and IxChel’s project coordinator, Ms Salome Oliver. We will grow lemon grass, oregano, barsley, calalu, aloe vera, rue, mint, tree of life and sorosi. Chives, cilantro, lettuce, cucumbers, chilis and lettuce will fill the vegetable boxes. Ix Chel continues to find positive ways to encourage our kids to do the right thing in society. We are not sure why it is so effective; just try this method when it rains heavily. This method was given me by a Police friend who had experienced and confirmed it. It is useful....even driving at night. One method used by Canadian Military Drivers for years. Most of the motorists would turn on HIGH or FASTEST SPEED of the wipers during heavy downpour, yet the visibility in front of the windshield is still bad. In the event you face such a situation, just try your SUN GLASSES (any model will do) and miracle! All of a sudden, your visibility in front of your windshield is perfectly clear, as if there is no rain. Make sure you always have a pair of SUN GLASSES in your car, as you are not only helping yourself to drive safely with good vision, but also might save your friend's life by giving him this idea.. Try it yourself and share it with your friends! Amazing, you still see the drops on the windshield, but not the sheet of rain falling. You can see where the rain bounces off the road. It works to eliminate the "blindness" from passing semi's spraying you too. Or the "kick-up" if you are following a semi or car in the rain. They ought to teach that little tip in driver's training. It really does work. NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON This next warning is a another good one! I wonder how many people know about this: A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and totaled her car. It was raining, though not excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air.. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence! When she explained to the Police Officer what had happened he told her something that every driver should know NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain. But the Officer told her that if the cruise control is on when your car begins to hydro-plane and your tires lose contact with the pavement, your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane She told the OPP Officer that was exactly what had occurred. The Officer said this warning should be listed, on the driver's seat Sun-visor NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the pavement is dry. Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow you to set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on. The only person the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the officer), was a man who had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe injuries. Sunday, December 9, 2012 STAR Tels: 626-8822 & 626-8841 & 804-4900 Email:starnewspaper@gmail.com Page 7 ARIES: March 22 to April 20 There might be some tension between you and your romantic partner that might have you feeling a bit depressed. The key to patching this up is honest communication. Remember that honest doesn't necessarily mean brutal. Confrontations now can only widen the rift. Tell your partner how you feel, but don't cast blame for anything. Share a little. By week's end, all should be well. Lucky numbers: 30, 63, 87. TAURUS: April 21 to May 21 This week your biorhythms may be a little low, so you aren't likely to be feeling very sociable. You are more likely to want to bury your nose in your projects instead of being your usual outgoing self. This is OK, but take care that you aren't so reclusive that you miss receiving some sincere compliments. That can make a big difference in the way you feel! Lucky numbers: 05, 34, 60. GEMINI: May 22 to June 21 An electrifying attraction to someone you may have just met could cause your mind to dwell on physical relations and romance this week. If you can, set up a romantic evening with a love partner. If this isn't possible, go to an emotional play or movie that moves you to tears. Movies may be of particular interest to you today, since you might be reading about how they're made. Lucky numbers: 17, 45, 71. CANCER: June 22 to July 23 Family members could be upset over different frustrating events in their lives, and these moods could spill over to you. This week it would be best to leave them alone to work things out in their own way. They aren't likely to respond to sympathy. Take this opportunity to tend to some of your concerns that you may have postponed. This way, the silence in the house can work for you. Lucky numbers: 12, 55, 96. Your Weekly Horoscope and Lucky Numbers LEO: July 24 to August 21 Unguarded words on the part of a younger person might lead to upset. If the words are directed at you, don't take them seriously. The person doesn't know any better. If the words are directed at someone else, don't be tempted to lash out at the person who said them. Correct him or her gently. Either way, keep it to yourself and then forget it. It isn't worth the stress. Lucky numbers: 09, 26, 80. VIRGO: August 22 to September 21 Profligate spending over the past week or two may have you feeling less confident about your money situation. Perhaps you have lent some money to a friend and you doubt their ability to repay. Or maybe you fell for a sales pitch that you now regret. Correct the situation if you can. If you can't, simply learn from the experience and put it behind you. Lucky numbers: 23, 48, 76. LIBRA: September 22 to October 23 Your ambition and will to succeed may be at war with your feelings this week. Perhaps you have been working so hard that you aren't spending enough time with friends and family and they miss you. Children and young people may be very much on your mind. Perhaps you doubt your ability to fulfill your responsibilities. Be objective when considering the situation. Don't let your emotions run away with you. Lucky numbers:03, 28, 70. SCORPIO: October 24 to November 21 This week you might uncharacteristically decide to sequester yourself away from the world. Perhaps you are tired or feeling a bit under the weather and only wish to kick back and read a good book. That's fine. Everyone needs a little solitude from time to time. The only concern here is that if you stay too secluded, you might miss an important communication. Resist the temptation to turn off the phone! Lucky numbers: 20, 41, 66. SAGITTARIUS: November 22 to December 21 A quarrel over money could interfere with a friendship this week. Perhaps someone hasn't repaid a loan and the lender now needs it. Perhaps a member of your household is unable to pay their share of the bills. Don't let yourself get drawn into quarrels or recriminations. Work something out with your friend if possible. Money isn't worth throwing away a friendship and leaving a gap in your life. Lucky numbers: 07, 36, 57. CAPRICORN: December 22 to January 20 Spiritual and metaphysical studies may take up a lot of your time this week. You might want to dig into the world's major religions or try to make it through works about spiritualism or the occult. If you want to, this is the week to do it because your concentration is very strong, although it will be necessary to take a lot of breaks! Lucky numbers: 15, 52, 83. AQUARIUS: January 21 to February 19 You might long for a vacation this week and you could toy with the idea of a journey by air. Your mind may turn to spiritual places such as India, Egypt, Israel, or Ireland as you wonder how it would feel to stand in the sacred places in those countries. Don't just toy with the idea. Page 8 STAR Tels: 626-8822 & 626-8841 & 804-4900 Email:starnewspaper@gmail.com Sunday, December 9, 2012 The Donkey In The Well One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off! Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up. A cowboy rode into town and stopped at a saloon for a drink. Unfortunately, the locals always had a habit of picking on strangers, which he was. When he finished his drink, he found his horse had been stolen. He went back into the bar, handily flipped his gun into the air, caught it above his head without even looking and fired a shot into the ceiling. "Which one of you sidewinders stole my horse?!?!?" he yelled with surprising forcefulness. No one answered. "Alright, I'm gonna have another beer, and if my horse ain't back outside by Say Partner the time I finish, I'm gonna do what I dun in Texas! And I don't like to have to do what I dun in Texas!" Some of the locals shifted restlessly. The man, true to his word, had another beer, walked outside, and his horse has been returned to the post. He saddled up and started to ride out of town. The bartender wandered out of the bar and asked, "Say partner, before you go... what happened in Texas?" The cowboy turned back and said, "I had to walk home." I Am A Father A little boy got on a bus, sat next to a man reading a book, and noticed he had his collar on backwards. The little boy asked why he wore his collar that way. The man, who was a priest, said, "I am a Father." The little boy replied, "My Daddy doesn't wear his collar like that." The priest looked up from his book and said, "I am the Father of many." The boy said, "My Dad has four boys, four girls and two grandchildren and he doesn't wear his collar that way." The priest, getting impatient, said "I am the Father of hundreds," and went back to reading his book. The little boy sat quietly... but on leaving the bus, he leaned over and said, "Well, maybe you should wear your pants backwards instead of your collar." LIQUOR LICENSE NOTICES LIQUOR LICENSE NOTICESPhilippines: Typhoon Bopha Death Toll Rises The death toll from a powerful storm battering the southern Philippines has risen to about 200, as rescue teams arrive in affected areas. At least 156 people are known to have died in Compostela Valley province alone when Typhoon Bopha struck eastern Mindanao, local officials mentioned. Rescuers have reached most areas, but have had difficulty getting to some isolated communities. Many were evacuated ahead of the storm, now over the western island of Palawan. The typhoon is expected to move out into the South China Sea on Thursday. Compostela Valley province was said to be the hardest-hit area. Neighbouring Davao Oriental province was also badly affected, with reports of about 50 people killed. In Andap village, in Compostela Valley, water and mud rushed down mountainous slopes to engulf a school and a village hall serving as evacuation centres. At least 43 people were killed there, with more reported missing and injured including soldiers sent to help with evacuations. "The waters came so suddenly and unexpectedly, and the winds were so fierce that compounded the loss of lives and livelihood," Compostela Valley Provincial Governor Arturo Uy told Reuters news agency. He said water catchment basins for farms on top of the mountains had given way because of the torrential rains, sending down large volumes of water. He added that the cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure in Compostela Valley province could reach at least 4 billion pesos ($98m), with the typhoon destroying 70-80% of plantations mostly bananas for export. Julius Rebucas whose mother and brother were caught in flash floods in Compostela Valley, said: "The last thing my mother said was 'I love you'. It's sad because I no longer have a family." Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon said roads to dozens of towns were impassable because of fallen trees and collapsed bridges, and getting into them was like "running an obstacle course". She said initial reports indicated that in one town, Cateel, 95% of the buildings had been damaged. Twenty-three people had drowned or were buried under fallen trees or buildings there, she said. Across the affected provinces, rescuers have also pulled out dozens of people from the mud, many of whom are now being treated in evacuation centres and hospitals. Most suffered facial wounds or limb injuries. Dozens of domestic flights and ferry services in the central and south of the country were suspended, and schools and businesses were closed while the storm passed. Bopha comes a year after Typhoon Washi killed more than 1,300 people in the southern Philippines. The storm devastated the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on the island's north coast. Many of those who died were sleeping as Typhoon Washi caused rivers to burst their banks, leading to landslides. Entire villages were washed away.
