He said that one of them struck him on the head with a coke bottle and the other with the machete. During a struggle with the attackers, Chen realized that he was unable to overpower them and so he gave up the struggle. Chen alleges that they emptied the register of its cash contents which he rounded off at $1,000. The attackers also escaped with Digicell and Smart phone cards valued at $1,950.00 and a brand new $1,700 iPhone all for a total value of $4,650. Continued From Front PageImported Robbers With Local Connections Investigations revealed that the men chartered an $80 taxi ride from San Ignacio to Cotton Tree Village located at mile 44 on the Western Highway. Getting wind of the information a Quick Response Team from Belmopan police sub-station, in a private car, rushed to the village where, upon approaching the speed bump in the village they came upon three male persons flagging them down in the process of hitch hiking eastward towards Black iPhone recovered from one of the accused Belize dollars recovered from one of the accused Belize City. The police jumped out of the car and quickly detained the three suspects. Upon being searched, one was found in possession of the iPhone, each had $250 dollars in cash and assorted Digicell and Smart telephone cards. They were first transported to the Belmopan police station and later to San Ignacio where they were identified as Troy Cole 22, Belizean labourer of #16 Currasow Street, Belize City; Gilbert Ramirez 20, Belizean labourer who gave his address as #19 Raccoon Street also in Belize City and Alex Reid, 23, Belizean labourer of a Macal Street address in San Ignacio. They were informed of the report against them and one of them reportedly chose to give a cautioned statement reportedly detailing the sequence of events even to the extent of indicating the mastermind behind the robbery, who police say did not participate in the execution of the robbery. The trio was later arrested and jointly charged for robbery. They appeared in the San Ignacio courtroom of Magistrate Nadia Morgan on Tuesday, May 29, where they all pled not guilty to the charge. In a strange twist of events the rather stern Magistrate Morgan, despite the prosecution’s objection to bail on the grounds of the prevalence and seriousness of the crime, proceeded to offer them bail in the sum of $5,000 each. Prosecutor George Gomez rose and informed the court that one of the accused, Alex Reid the one with the San Ignacio address, was already on bail in connection with the April 13, 2011 robbery at the residence of Orlando “Big H” Harrison. In that incident the robbers made off with cash and property valued at over 15 thousand dollars. Based on this new information, Magistrate Morgan upheld the prosecution’s no bail submission and proceeded to remand Reid to prison. All three accused robbers were ordered to return to court on Tuesday, August 4, 2012. Although bail was offered to Cole and Ramirez on Tuesday, no one appeared to bail them right up to the time when the prison run was ready to leave the San Ignacio police station on Wednesday afternoon. They were consequently all transported to the central prison in Hattieville. Page 4 STAR Tels: 626-8822 & 626-8841 & 804-4900 Email:starnewspaper@gmail.com Sunday, June 3, 2012 Dear Editor, I would like to take a minute to respond to Wellington C. Ramos who, apparently, is our Belizean friend, living in New York (last week’s edition). He says that Marion Jones did anything and everything for the sake of Belize. I don’t think so. She did everything for herself, for fame and money – and she got caught. She shamed Belize, not honoured it. She is a liar and a cheat. He then says that it was unfortunate she got imprisoned for using enhancement drugs which, he goes on to say, most athletes use. That’s rubbish! It was unfortunate for other athletes who trained for years but couldn’t compete in the Olympics because they chose not to take drugs and lost their place to her. Responding To Wellington C. Ramos Dear Friends, There is no way that Senior Superintendent of Police Alvan Gentle can refuse to be transfered after his instructions were posted in the Police Force Orders because he will be brought on charges for "Willfully Disobeying A Lawful Command" What he can do is appeal his transfer to the Commissioner of Police and outline to him the undue hardship the transfer will cause for him and his family. If the acting Commissioner of Police Henderson is satisfied with his explanation, he can then decide to cancel the transfer. Sending Senior Superintendent Chester Williams to replace him is not a wise move because of his past reputation and the crime rate in Cayo District. Mr. Williams should be assigned to the Prosecution Branch where he could assist the Officers in preparing case files before they I guess it was unfortunate for her also that she was involved in a cheque fraud case and that she lied to a Grand Jury? And then he goes on to say that it happened because she wasn’t white? And that she will not be the first or last black woman to experience this unfortunate ordeal in America. Unfortunate ordeal? My friend, you seem rather biased towards black people and not at all loyal to the country that you have chosen to live in. And of course the stadium in Belize City should be renamed. Can you honestly say that we don’t have any athletes who are more worthy of being honoured than somebody who was thrown in prison because they cheated and lied? Page 6 STAR Tels: 626-8822 & 626-8841 & 804-4900 Email:starnewspaper@gmail.com Sunday, June 3, 2012 Got Used to sharing Everything An old man ordered one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink. He then unwrapped the burger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, and then his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them kept looking over and whispering. You could tell they were thinking: "That poor old couple -all they can afford is one meal for the two of them." As the man began to eat his fries, a young man came to the table. He politely offered to buy “The Newspaper that cares and dares to bring out the truth”Publisher: Nyani K. August Editor: Albert Nigel August Circulation: Stanley GabourelApt. #5 Hoffman Complex Western Highway, Santa Elena, Cayo, Belize, Central AmericaOffice Tel: 804-4900 Cell: 626-8822 626-8841 another meal for the old couple. The old man said, “we are just fine we are used to sharing everything.” The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time, the old woman said: "No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything." As the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady, who had yet to eat a single bite of food, and asked: "What is it you are waiting for?" She answered: "His teeth." I Got A Better Deal During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the pastor with an unusual offer: "Look, I'll give you $100 if you'll change the wedding vows. When you get to the part where I'm supposed to promise to 'love, honor and obey' and 'be faithful to her forever,' I'd appreciate it if you'd just leave that out." He passed the minister a $100 bill and walked away satisfied. On the day of the wedding, when it came time for the groom's vows, the pastor looked the young man in the eye and said: "Will you promise to bow before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?" The groom gulped and looked around, and said in a tiny voice, "Yes," then leaned toward the pastor and hissed, "I thought we had a deal." The pastor put a $100 bill into the groom's hand and whispered: "She made me a better offer." Guess Who's The Bride Mark, a young Belizean man excitedly tells his mother that he has fallen in love with the most beautiful Hispanic woman and that he is going to get married. He says, “Just for fun, Ma, I’m going to bring over three women and you try and guess which one I’m going to marry.” His mother agrees. The next day, Mark brings three beautiful women into the house and sits them down on the couch and they chat for a while. He then says, “OK, Ma, guess which one I’m going to marry.” She immediately replies, “The one on the right.” “That’s amazing, Ma. You’re right. How did you know? To which the Belizean mother replies, “I don’t like her.” Middle Management V acancyBelize Water Services Limited (BWS) invites dynamic professionals who possess the requisite education, analytical skills, attitude and aptitude to indicate their interest in filling the following Middle Management position. Patrick Faber accompanied by the ministry’s Minister of State, Hon. Herman Longsworth. The meeting began at 6:15 pm with a prayer and the singing of the national anthem. First to address the gathering was the Hon. Herman Longsworth who informed that, although he has specific responsible for Youth and Sports, he is participating in the meeting as he continues to assist the Hon. Patrick Faber in the pursuit of seeking ways to improve education countrywide. Hon. Patrick Faber listening attentively as the audience participated in the discussion Hon. Herman Longsworth Minister of State responsible for Youth and Sports Hon. Patrick Faber responding to questions Hon. Patrick Faber speaking to stakeholders Next to address the gathering was Minister Faber who, in an effort to identify the audience, requested for all teachers to stand up and be acknowledged. More than three quarters of the attendees stood up. Also notably present were several school local managers. Interestingly, and despite a packed meeting room, when Minister Faber asked for the identification of those attending the meeting solely as parents, only one person, a woman, stood up. Minister Faber, obviously disappointed by this poor showing, informed that an open invitation was issued by the ministry and that it was not specific to only those in the teaching profession. Minister Faber informed that after the September celebrations are over, he will be returning to San Ignacio to host a similar meeting. He challenged local managers, principals and teachers to spread the word and to invite as much parents as possible to attend the meeting. Minister Faber further informed that he is looking forward to hearing from parents as, in his words “this is the reason why we hold these meetings, to tell you what the ministry has accomplished, to listen to your concerns and to work with you to find solutions to issues that are affecting our education services.” In reiterating his policy of inclusion, Minister Faber said “if we are to change anything in the education system, we have to include all stakeholders in order for us to chart the way forward.” The highlight of the evening was the Ministry’s accomplishments over the last four years as well as the 2012 to 2016 strategic plan. Minister Faber told the gathering that the ministry has formulated a 1.5 billion dollar Strategic Education Plan that has been presented and approved by Cabinet. His greatest challenge now is to find the funds to implement the plan. As the plan takes shape, Minister Faber informed that the Ministry has already received approval from the Caribbean Development Bank to the tune of BZ $5 million. “An important element of the plan” informed Minister Faber is that secondary school education will be provided free of cost to all students graduating from primary school. Another major achievement of the ministry is the coming on stream of the Education and Training Act of 2010. In terms of the Teaching Services Commission, Minister Faber said that while it may pose challenges for some, the Commission has been beneficial to all Education stakeholders specifically as it pertains to removing the power from the ministry to transfer teachers as well as to grant study leave. “Everything is still afloat,” said minister Faber on the successful removal of corporal punishment from schools. He explained that the alternative to corporal punishment is what teachers decide to do in their classroom with the support of local managers, principals and of course parents. Another major accomplishment of the ministry as pointed out by the Hon. Patrick Faber is the Certificate in Primary Education that has seen the participation and training of over 600 primary school teachers across Belize. Minister Faber pointed out that while teacher training is not a core government responsibility the current administration has willingly and enthusiastically provided 95% financial assistance to teachers in pursuit of higher education. As usual, and in rounding up his interaction with the audience, Minister Faber reiterated the success of government’s high school subsidy program which is currently registering, he said “a 101% success rate in the Toledo District” as several persons who graduated from primary school a few years ago are returning with the sole intention of participating in the program. Minister Faber informed that because of the success of the program, government is seriously seeking to extend it to third form students countrywide. Don't be surprised if they seem to argue with your ideas left and right. Your heart may be especially tender, and any sort of dispute could affect you deeply. On the other hand, you can use your sensitivity to calm a situation that needs to be remedied. Lucky numbers: 18, 53, 75. TAURUS: April 21 to May 21 The key for you this week is to use your heart more than your head. Base your actions on your feelings and your inner knowing of the situation. Facts may deceive you. It could be that you have come to rely so much on a linear, logical way of thinking that you can't see any other way. It is important that you see the interconnectedness of many of the different areas in your life. Lucky numbers:24, 47, 82. GEMINI: May 22 to June 21 Things should go especially well for you today, Gemini, so don't worry about a thing. Life doesn't necessarily get easier as you get older. You just learn how to deal with things. You'll find this to be true right now as your incredible sensitivity and wisdom are making it possible for you to attain a clearer perspective. You realize that things are much better than you may have thought. Lucky numbers:04, 31, 59. CANCER: June 22 to July 23 The more attention you try to get from other people this week, the more people are going to ignore your fancy displays and ambitious ideas. Take a much more sensitive approach. You will be able to lead people better when you walk behind them. Earn the respect of others by understanding and relating to their emotions. Your heart is big and bold, and you have a great deal of love to give. Lucky numbers: 12, 65, 89. LEO: July 24 to August 21 Take care of the people around you. Service to others is an important part of the day, as compassion and caring are at the forefront of your mind. Take this opportunity to become a reassuring caregiver for someone close who needs a nurturing shoulder. You will win a great number of loyal friends to your side as you share your passionate nature with others. Lucky numbers:09, 37, 85. VIRGO: August 22 to September 21 You may feel as if you are sinking into an emotional vortex. Be careful about assuming things are yours when they aren't really. It is important for you not accuse someone of doing wrong when you have no facts to back up your claim. Keeping things in balance may be hard with the great amount of emotional sensitivity at this time. Lucky numbers:14, 34, 62. LIBRA: September 22 to October 23 Your thinking is quite clear and you will find that your emotions support your mental processes. Your psychic nature is also strong, so you should trust any hunch you have. The masculine and feminine sides of your being are working together harmoniously to balance out the degree of give versus take in your world. The key at the moment is to not take on as your own other people's problems. Lucky numbers:07, 39, 72. SCORPIO: October 24 to November 21 You need to keep your spaceship idle this week and perform a safety check for your crew. Make sure everyone on board is informed of the destination. maybe you just picked them off the street without really telling them where they were going. It is important that you don’t drag people unwittingly into your world. If they voluntarily give the controls then that's a different story. Lucky numbers:16, 43, 78. SAGITTARIUS: November 22 to December 21 Things may not be as obvious as they first seem this week. Don't get started on a project until you understand the full scope of what you are getting into. Otherwise, you may find yourself caught in the middle of an emotional drama that leaves you little room for escape. Don't be surprised if your motivation suddenly dissipates and you're left with no incentive to get your work done. Lucky numbers: 27, 45, 93. CAPRICORN: December 22 to January 20 Do not try to force your ideas on anyone. It is important to maintain neutrality so you can act from a stable state of mind when someone brings you an issue that needs to be dealt with right away. The key is to act rather than react to a situation. If you know you are right about something, keep it to yourself. There is no need to rub it in anyone's face and tell them they're wrong. Lucky numbers:21, 56, 67. AQUARIUS: January 21 to February 19 Your intuitive nature is especially strong. You won't have to think about things because you will have the ability to just know the answers. If any penetrating detective work needs to be done, this would be an excellent time to do it. Your caring, sensitive nature will get you through any door you want to walk through today. Keep that smile on your face at all times. Lucky numbers:02, 40, 96. PISCES: February 20 to March 21 Any argument you start this week is likely to erupt into an emotional battle, so beware. Try not to step on anyone else's turf, because you will find that he or she is likely to be possessive and rather belligerent about defending what is rightfully theirs. Avoid volcanic eruptions of energy. Don't pick fights where they aren't needed. You can civilly resolve issues without doing harm to others.
