The United De m ocratic Party ( U DP ) i n B e lize is p r opo s ing an a m end m ent to the Belize Constitution s o that all the u t i l i t i e s c omp a n i e s i n t he cou n try t h at dea l s with ; elec t ricit y telephone water e t c be contro l led by the g o v ern m ent of Belize. This le g islation was proposed by the rulin g party in the House of Representati v es recently due to the ta k e o v er and control of m ost of the utilities co m panies in the l a st PU P ad m i n istra t ion by pri v ate in v estors. This led to hi g h utility rates that were una f f ordable to the Belizean citizens and excessi ve l o s t o f r e v e nu e s t o th e p e o p le and g o v ern m ent of Belize. Most Belizean citizens are in favor of the m o v e t o ha v e the gove r nme n t o f B e l i z e o wn m ajority shares in these utilities c o m p a n i e s s u c h a s ; B e l i ze E l e c t r i c i t y L i m i t e d ( B E L) B e l i z e T e l e m e d i a L i m i t ed ( B T L) a n d B e l iz e W a t er S er v ices L i m ited (BWSL). There is also a call by a few Belizeans to do the sa m e to the; a i r a n d se a p o r t s oi l p r i s on and na t ural resources and other B Y : W elli n gt on C Ra m os industries that Belize possess so that the g o v ern m ent and people of Belize can benefit fro m all its n a tu r a l r e so u r c es to a c qu i re fund s to i m pr ov e the li v es of Belizeans. The g o v ern m ent of Belize has a l w a y s f u n c t i o n e d u n d e r a c o nst i tu t ion si n ce t he a tt a in me nt o f po l it i ca l in d ep e nd e nce on S epte m ber 21 1981. E v ery Belizean citizen has the ri g ht to brin g a case a g ainst the Go v ern m ent of Belize if they b e l i e v e t h a t t h e g over n m e nt h a s i n f r i n g e o n t h e i r c o n s t i t utional ri g hts. While this debate is ta k ing place in the country of Belize, la w yer s for BT L repr e sen t ing Mic h ael As h c rof t ha v e filed an i n ju n cti o n i n t he Car i bb e an Court of Justice (CCJ) to stop t h e G o v e r n m e n t o f B e l i z e to proceed with its e f fort to a m end t h e c o n s t i t u t i o n a n d t a k e o v er BT L BE L and BW SL This is a r e que s t I do not bel i e ve th e co u rt will g rant because that will stop the g o v ern m ent of Belize to carry out its responsibilities to the citizens of Belize. The court is only interested i n k n o w i n g w h e t h e r t he G ove r nme n t o f B e l i z e i n a m e n di n g t he co n st i t u ti o n ac t ed in accordance with the pro v isions s e t o u t in C h a p te r 6 a n d Se c t i o n6 9 o f t h e B e l i z e C o n s t i t u t i o n. S o far it see m s as if the Go v ernm e n t o f B e l i z e i s i n f u ll co m p l iance wi t h those p ro v isions set for t h in the Belize c o nst i tu t ion by co n duc t in g th e se public hearin g s.
