Beware!!! Mercury In Macal River Fish

stop eating Bay Snook from the MacalRiver

BELMOPAN, Wednesday, July
6,2011:
The Ministry of Health,
in collaboration with the
Department of Environment and
the Belize Electric Company
(BECOL), has concluded
another testing of mercury in
fish from the Macal River.
The following Public Advisory
is being issued to guide the
general public on weekly
consumption quantities of
Bay-snook (Pentenia splendid)
from the Macal River to avoid
ill effects due to mercury
exposure.
The latest result from samples
of fish taken from the Macal
River on the 26th and 27th April
2011, indicated that the new
levels of mercury found in Bay
Snook is at 1.64 mg/kg.
This new level records an
increase of 0.3 mg/kg over the
last test result of May 2010, and
the new weekly consumption of
Bay Snook shall be 0.06 lbs or
0.93oz for an individual of
1751bs.

The Bay Snook
(Pentenia splendid)
With mercury elevation over
three times (3.28 times) the
allowable amount and the
possibility of it to continue
rising, the Ministry of Health
sees it fit to advise the public to
stop eating Bay Snook from the
Macal River, until the level of
mercury falls to safer limits.
The public is warned to
observe the recommended for
Bay Snook not to be eaten
from the Macal River, it also
recognizes the important role
fish plays in our diet; hence, it
also recommends the following
to maintain a balance diet.
Although the Ministry has
recommended for Bay Snook
not to be eaten from the Macal

River, it also recognizes the
important role fish plays in our
diet; hence, it also recommends
the following to maintain a
balance diet.
1.Eating fish from other
locations in the country.
2Eating replacement foods
like: canned tuna, local chicken,
seeds such as flaxseed, pumpkin
seeds (Pepitos), sesame
(Wangla seed), sunflower,
cashew nuts, avocados, spinach,
oils from flaxseed, canola, corn,
olive or soybean.

3. Taking Omega Acid Supple-
ments.
The general public is warned
that the advisory on consump-
tion of Bay Snook only applies
to Bay Snook caught and eaten
from the Macal River.
Furthermore, the Ministry of
Health would like to assure the
public that it remains watchful
on this issue and will continue
to track its progress and make
the necessary advisory on the
mercury level.
Let's remain safe and healthy
and avoid eating Bay Snook
from the Macal River.

Burns Avenue Blaze Tremendous Material Losses

assistance from neighborhood
business persons, three other
factors that assisted in contain-
ing the fire were 1) the
relatively calm prevailing
weather condition at that time
of the day with hardly any wind
blowing, 2) the two storey
cement wall of Ayaana's Super
Store, the new building on the
right side of the blaze and 3) a
downpour of rain while the fire
was raging.
Three vehicles parked
immediately in front of the
burning building were spared
extensive damages when police-
men, with assistance from
concerned citizens, braved the
heat and pushed them to safety
away from the fire.
The intensive heat shattered
glass windows from Ayaana's
Super Store, the building on the
right side of the fire. It also
cracked the glass from Santiago
Castillo's warehouse and the two
front glass windows from the
lower portion of the Venus
Hotel both located across the
street from the blaze.
While fire experts are yet
to determine the igniting
factor, preliminary investigation

revealed that the fire began
inside a back section of the
upstairs wooden portion of the
two storey building which was
occupied by a couple, Santiago
Requena and Carmen Moralez
along with their four children
ranging between the ages of five
and nine.
Initial investigation further
revealed that the children were
reportedly home alone as the
father was at work and the
mother was away on an errand.
Fortunately, all four screaming
and frightened children, without
any bodily injuries, were res-
cued by a good samaritan who
was on the scene during the
initial stage of the blaze.
Notwithstanding, the children
were taken to the San Ignacio
Community Hospital for evalu-
ation where they were met by
their equally frightened mother.
The lower portion of the
building housed Oscar Cano's
Jewelry store on the right and a
Hindu store on the left with the
Hindu store occupying that
section which once housed
the registration office of the
Elections and Boundaries
Department.
While Oscar Cano, assisted by

his employees, was able to rush
out of the burning building with
two glass showcases containing
mostly coral jewelry and other
trinkets, his sizable inventory of
gold and silver jewelry, along
with the equipment and other
tools of his trade, were totally
consumed by the fire.
It was likewise a total loss for
the Hindu businessman as all the
merchandise inside his store was
destroyed in the blaze.
The building was the property
of Belize City businessman,
Leopold "Polo" Silva, owner of
Venus Photos and Records store
located at the comer of Albert
and King Streets in Belize City.
In a brief telephone interview
with the , Mr. Silva, from his
Belize City store, informed that
he was keeping abreast of the
situation via telephone with rela-
tives in San Ignacio and that he
was waiting for the five o'clock
closing time before heading to
San Ignacio to get a first hand
assessment of damage. He ad-
ditionally informed that the
building was covered by Atlan-

tic Insurance.
Apart from the owner of the
building along with the two
business persons in the lower flat
and the family residing in the
upper section of the building, the
fire further affected Oscar Cano
and members of the Dream
Marching Band. According to
Jimmy Gongora, an affiliate of
the band, the group lost all its
instruments, valued at over thirty
thousand dollars, stored in the
upstairs portion of the building.

sunup to sundown, his shoulders
set squarely against the cold,
massive surface of the unmoving
rock, pushing with all his might!
Each night the man returned to
his little house sore and worn out,
feeling that his whole day had been
spent in vain.
Since the man was showing
discouragement, the Adversary
(Satan) decided to enter the picture
by placing thoughts into the weary
mind (like he does every time).
"You have been pushing against
that rock for a long time and it
hasn't moved." said Satan to the
man. He gave the man the impres-
sion that the task was impossible
and that he was a failure. These
thoughts discouraged and disheart-
ened the man.
Satan continued, "Why kill
yourself over this? Just put in
your time, giving just the
minimum effort; and that will be
good enough."
That's what the weary man
planned to do, but before doing so
he decided to make it a matter of
prayer and to take his troubled
thoughts to the Lord.
"Lord," he said, "I have labored
long and hard in Your Service,
putting all my strength to do
that which you have asked Yet, af-
ter all this time, I have not even
budged that rock by half a milli-
meter. What is wrong? Why am I
failing?"
The Lord responded compas-
sionately, "My friend, when I
asked you to serve Me and you
accepted, I told you that your
task was to push against the rock
with all of your strength, which
you have done.

Never once did I mention to
you that I expected you to move
it. Your task was to push. And
now you come to Me with your
strength spent, thinking that you
have failed.
But, is that really so? Look at
yourself. Your arms are strong
and muscled, your back shiny
and brown; your hands are
callused from constant pressure,
your legs have become massive
and hard.
Through opposition you have
grown much, and your abilities
now surpass that which you used
to have. True, you haven't moved
the rock. But your calling was to
be obedient and to push and to
exercise your faith and trust in
My wisdom. That you have done.
Now I, my friend, will move the
rock."
At times, when we hear a word
from God, we tend to use our own
intellect to decipher what He
wants, when actually what God
wants is just simple obedience and
faith in Him.
By all means, exercise the faith
that moves mountains, but know
that it is still God Who moves the
mountains.
When everything seems to go
wrong................. . Just P..U.S.H.
When the job gets you down........
........... .......................Ju st P.U .S.H .
When people don't do as you think
they should........... Just P.U.S.H.
When your money is "gone" and
the bills are due..........Just P.U.S.H.
When people just don't understand
you.......................... Just P.U.S.H .

He is Gone

-

Juan Erndho "'ZingZetina

You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived,
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared,
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on,
You can cry and close your mind be empty and
turn your back,
Or you can do what he would want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

The two honorees are Mr.

These two outstanding citizens
have contributed tremendously

A Mother And Her Two Sons Remanded To Prison

A thorough search of the
house yielded nothing illegal.
The search was subsequently
extended to the yard where,
about 10 feet from the house, a
member of the search party,
reported the discovery of a black
plastic bag and when it was
opened, in the presence of the
accused, it was found to contain
a point twenty two caliber,
Ruger brand, rifle with a portion
of the barrel sawed off. Also in-
side the bag were ten live, GE
brand, rounds of ammunition of
the same caliber. The discovery
led to the immediate detention
of the two Kelly brothers along
with their 62 year old mother,
who was present inside the
house at the time of the discov-
ery.
The two Kelly brothers and
their mother were transported to
the police station where they
were later arrested and jointly
charged for keeping a prohibited
firearm and for keeping ammu-
nition without a gun license.
They spent the weekend in
police custody and were taken
to court on Monday, July 4
where they all pleaded not guilty
to both joint charges. After

on Tuesday, October 4, 2011.
The sudden change in lifestyle
has reportedly affected the
mother's health requiring
hospitalization for a few days,
under police guard, at the San

She was later released from the
hospital and back into police

she was transported from San

Belizeans With Dual Citizenship Need To Become
Actively Involved In The Diaspora Initiative Program

BY- Wellington C. Ramos

Most Belizeans with dual
citizenships are not aware of the
fact that when Belize attained
political independent under the
People's United Party (PUP) on
September 21st,1981 natural
born Belizeans who possessed
citizenships from another
country were no longer citizens
of Belize.
The PUP government went
further and granting amnesty to
thousands of people from El
Salvador and other non
Belizeans and gave them lands
and other rights in Belize while
depriving us of our inherrent
rights.
When the United Democratic
Party (UDP) came to power for
the first time on December
4,1984 defeating the PUP by a
margin of 21-7, they amended
the Constitution of Belize
and included a Dual Citizenship
provision which states that once
you are a natural born Belizean
citizen you will always remain
one even if you become a
citizen of another country.
In addition the new law
provided for the filing for
Belizean citizenships for
spouses, children, grand chil-
dren and other offspring defined
in law as Belizeans By Descent.
This right having been

established, Belizeans living in
the United States ofAmerica and
elsewhere abroad must be aware
of the fact that their interest is
better served with a UDP in
governments as opposed to one
of the PUP who have never
legislated anything to benefit
Belizeans living aborad with
Dual Citizenships.
No government of Belize will
give us anything unless we work
with them and make our
demands known. All of us must
work together to secure our
rights and those of our children,
grandchildren and our future
generations to come. With
a caring and compassionate
government in place, the time to
do so is NOW!!!
Notwithstanding, there are still
some issues that Belizeans with
Dual Citizenships are concerned
about such as; obtaining parcels

Foreign Minister Wilfred
"Sedi" Elrington recently
commended Belizeans living
abroad for sending their
remittances to their loved ones
in Belize to assist their families
and help boost their country's
economy.
When the Foreign Minister
first took office, his top priority
was to negotiate with the

Guatemala, the procedures for
an attempt to resolve the old
territorial dispute between
Guatemala and Belize.
The governments of Belize
and Guatemala have both
ratified the agreement and they
are going to schedule a date to
have a referendum in both
countries soon. Once the people
have approved the agreement in
a Referendum for final passage,
they will proceed to the
Caribbern Court of Justice
(CCJ) for a hearing on the
matter.
I have observed that since
Foreign Minister Elrington
completed his first task with the
Guatemalan issue, he has
stepped up his activities in the
area of foreign trade to bring
investments into Belize to
revitalize the Belizean economy.
In addition, he has also
reached out to the Belizean
community living in the United
States of America to get
involved in their country's
affairs to assist the government
with its efforts to build the
economy of Belize.
He is also Belize's Minister of
Foreign Trade which is to travel
abroad and bring investments to
Belize.
Belize has a vast amount of
land and a small population
which gives the country the
golden opportunity to encourage
many of its citizens to engage in
farming and to start up factories
to produce goods and services
from their agricultural products.
Unemployment is very high
throughout the country of
Belize.
Economic studies conducted
over the years indicates that if
more Belizeans were to become
innovative and start their own
businesses, it would reduce the
unemployment rate by half the
current rate.
Many Belizeans say that it is
difficult to start their own
businesses but many immigrants
who have come to Belize
from neighboring Central
American republics and from as
far away as China have done so
and they seem to be doing quite
well in Belize. It is reaching the
point where some Belizeans
have become resentful of these
new entrepreneurs and they are
going around crying that the
foreigners are taking over the

country.
Belizeans living in the United
States of America and elsewhere
abroad must play a vital role
in all aspects of Belize's
development if Belize is to be a
major industrialize and techno-
logical nation in the 22nd century.
The present Government of
Belize government is fully
aware of this fact hence the
reason why they have champi-
oned this Diaspora Initiative for
its citizens living outside of
Belize.
The Dean Barrow administra-
tion and our Foreign Minister
should be commended for the
outstanding work they have
done since taking over the reigns
of government in February
2008. Many Belizeans are
amazed at what this government
has accomplish in such a short
period of time knowing what the
government inherited at the time
of taking over in 2008.
Attracting investors to Belize is
good for the economy as it
provides jobs for our people.
Honesty and integrity are two
of the most important qualities
this Foreign Minister possesses.
He is a true Belizean and could
be described as a Belizean
Nationalist. You can trust him to
negotiate on behalf of Belize and
Belizeans.
I can assure you that this
government under the leadership
of this Prime Minister
Honorable Dean Barrow and
Foreign Minister Wilfred
Elrington, will never sign any
agreement that is not in the best
interest of Belize and the
Belizean people.
Many foreigners are getting
to like our country more than us
and if we do not get a piece of
Belize now, our chances of
getting a piece in the future will
become more difficult.
The way things are looking in
the United States od America
today, it would be wise to
have something in your native
homeland because your Ameri-
can citizenship could be revoked
in an instant but your Belizean
citizenship is a lifetime
guarantee.
To all my fellow Belizeans
living beyond the borders of our
wonderful country: Let us
demonstrate to our Belizean
government how much we care
about our beloved country
Belize by getting actively
involved in the Diaspora
Initiative Program.
