Premier Pine Ridge Resort Expressing
Concern About Logging In The Area

October 21, 2010
Mr. Benjamin Recinos
Dear Sir;
It has come to our attention
that your company is respon-
sible for the logging that
has been happening for the past
4 weeks across the Five Sisters
Lodge private property and the
Privassion River.
We understand that all logging
in the Mountain Pine Ridge
Reserve requires permits, and
thus we expect that you have
been operating in accordance to
the forest laws of Belize.
Our concern at Five Sisters
Lodge is first of all the noise
level produced by the heavy
machinery at the logging site.
This has deterred some of our
visitors to the falls and others to
leave the Mountain Pine Ridge.
All visitors to this area come
to enjoy the serenity of the Pine
Ridge ecosystem and to fully
appreciate the sound of the
fauna in this area. The sound of
machinery is unmistakable and
defeats the purpose of total
tranquility.
Secondly, we noted the
proximity of the logging
activity near the steep terrain
and the extensive clearing done
on the side and on the ridge
opposite our Lodge that more
than likely will mean erosion of
that area.
It was bad enough last
year during the wild fire that
happened at the same logging
site but now our concerns would
be during the rainy season and
the potential threat of landslides
in that area.
Finally, our concern is that the
scenery will be forever altered
without understanding if indeed
any proper assessment of such
an activity was made.

The Mountain Pine Ridge
Forest Reserve without Pine
trees cannot be the same.
Not only is the scenery viewed
by our direct guests but by the
hordes of daily visitors on tours
from San Ignacio that come to
marvel at our waterfalls and the
beauty of Belize's backcountry.
Our Management team visited
the logging site on October
20th, 2010, and noted that
no consideration was given to
immature or young pine trees at
the logging site. Belize and the
Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve
have been slowly recovering
from the damaging effect of
the pine bark beetle that
destroyed the great majority of
our beautiful pine forest, thus
to see furthermore this forest
being destroyed by the negligent
use of heavy machinery at and
around young developing pine
trees is unacceptable and
unforgiving.
We call your attention to this
matter and by a copy of this
letter to the Forest Department
we request for this sort of
activity to be completely ceased
until an assessment is made of
this inappropriate practice.
The management and staff
at Five Sisters Lodge strongly
believe that the Mountain Pine
Ridge Forest Reserve can be
utilized under sound, proper and
standard practices of timber
harvest. Not doing so, otherwise,
will mean a further demise of
such a natural heritage and an
impact on the tourism industry
and the natural environment.

Attentively,
Mr. Carlos J. Popper, Owner
Proprietor; Ms. Terry Montero
Regional Manager; Mr. Javier
Martinez, Assistant Manager

LOBOS REMANDED FOR GUN
FRIENDS ON BAIL FOR WEED

Police Station were on mobile
patrol in Bullet Tree Falls village
on Friday, October 29, when at
around 8:30 pm, they received
reports of a group of male
persons traveling in a white
Mazda pickup truck one of
whom was said to be armed with
a gun.
It did not take long for the
police to spot the vehicle parked
on a farm located between
Bullet Tree Falls and Santa
Familia Village with a group of
male persons assembled under a
zinc roof shed. Police reports
that as their unmarked Ford
Ranger truck was approaching,
one of the persons was seen
running away from the group
with a black plastic bag in his
right hand. The most senior
officer in the group set chase
after him and whilst in pursuit,
he reportedly observed when the
fleeing man threw the bag into
nearby bushes. The man was
caught and, with assistance from
the Quick Response Team
(QRT) arriving on the request
for reinforcement, a search led
to the discovery of the bag
containing a black, point 32
caliber, Smith & Wesson brand
revolver, loaded with 6 rounds
of suspected live ammunition in
the chamber. The loaded gun
was found tucked inside a brown
gun holster.
All five detainees were
transported to the police station
in San Ignacio Town where they
were identified as Belizeans
Rodolfo Roni Lobos, 52,
laborer, residing in the San Jose
Area between the villages of
Bullet Tree Falls and Santa
Familia where they were
encountered; Edward Glenford
Torres, 34, electrician of a

Shawville area address on the
western outskirts of San Ignacio
Town; Ian Vasquez, 33, laborer
also of a Shawville address;
Steven "Hen" Gentle, 29,
electrician also from the
Shawville community and
Benjamin Vasquez, 27,
mechanic, residing on Benque
Viejo Road in San Ignacio
Town.
While Edward Glenford
Torres and Steven "Hen" Gentle
were identified as brothers, there
is no blood relation between Ian
Vasquez and Benjamin Vasquez.
The suspected marijuana,
tipping the scale at 189.1 grams,
was weighed in the presence of
Edward Torres, Ian Vasquez,
Steven Gentle and Benjamin
Vasquez resulting in their being
formally arrested and jointly
charged, on Saturday, October
30, for drug trafficking.
Also on Saturday, October
30, the fifth detainee, Rodolfo
Roni Lobos, was formally
arrested and charged with
keeping an unlicensed firearm
and for keeping unlicensed
ammunition.
All five accused persons
appeared in San Ignacio's
Magistrate court on Tuesday,
November 2, where all charges
were read to them by Magistrate
Albert Hoare. They all pleaded
not guilty to all charges.
Given the nature of the offence
Lobos could not be offered bail
and was remanded to prison
while the other four accused, on
the drug trafficking charge, were
granted and released on bail in
the sum of five thousand dollars
with two guarantors of twenty
five hundred dollars each.
They were ordered to return
to court on Monday, December
20, 2010.

President Obama's Biggest Problems Are The Republicans

As Well As Big Business and Financial Institutions
Br. Wlliatfin C R Da.>

When Barak Obama became
President of the United States
two years ago the nation's
economy was in shambles and
close to the Great Depression of
the 1930's. This was due to
eight years of George Bush's
presidency squandering the
nation's five billion dollar
surplus he inherited from his
predecessor President Bill
Clinton on the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
This was more than enough
money to provide jobs for our
unemployed citizens and provide
them with health care coverage
they desperately needed.
The Republicans under the
leadership oftheirPresident, had

no intentions of providing any of
these two important things to our
people. No American citizen in
his or her sane mind, believed
that President Obama and his
Democratic Party controlled
congress was capable of solving
our economic problems in two
years.
The President and his
Democratic Party was faced with
the challenge of maintaining
the cost of the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, while restructuring
our economic policies to
revitalize our domestic economy
which was in a mild depression.
The Republican Party was
using every legislative tool they
had to become obstructionist to
sabotage these reforms. Even
though the Democrats had a
majority in the House of
Representatives, many of the
new members that were elected
with President Obama were
Conservative Democrats the
same as Republican Lite.
They opposed many of the
reforms the core members of
the Democratic Party were

advancing.
In the Senate there were also a
few Conservative Democrats
who were against some of the
reform agendas despite the fact
that the Democrats had the sixty
votes to avoid a filibuster.
The Republican Party
pretended as if they legitimately
wanted reforms to take place.
Yet, deep within their hearts
and minds, they were doing
everything in their power to make
this president fail. They went
ahead and formed the Tea Party
as a radical wing of their party
to demonstrate their hatred for
the president. There is no
difference between the Tea Party
and the Republican Party and all
actions of the Tea Party are
being planned and orchestrated
by the Republican Party.
The Republican Party has, for
many years, been advocating
huge tax cuts for big businesses
with the false hope that these
businesses will take these
incentives to expand their
businesses and provide more jobs
to our citizens. This experiment
was tried by President Ronald
Reagan and it resulted in these
businesses benefiting from the
tax breaks without providing any
jobs at home but taking their
businesses overseas in search of
cheap labor.
Since the 1980's, many
businesses have left our country
in search of cheap labor leaving
many of our citizens without
jobs. Not only are the jobs going
overseas but the goods are being
allowed to come back into our
country with minimal import
taxation to bring back lost
revenues to our federal budget.
Our government can no longer
afford to have our citizens be
given the tax incentives to grow
their businesses with our
tax payers money and then take
the jobs overseas to benefit
themselves and the countries
abroad. I cannot see how the
Republicans can balance a
budget, cut taxes, increase
defense spending and provide
employment to most of our
citizens. It has never happened in
the past and it will not happen in
the future.
Congress recently passed a bill
under the Trouble Asset Relief
Program (TARP) that was signed
in good faith by this president to
give the financial institutions a
total of 700 billion dollars to

recover financially. The purpose
of this money was for these
financial institutions to provide
money to businesses so that
they in return can grow their
businesses to employ more
Americans. Some of these
financial institutions claimed that
they needed the money badly
to stay in business and avoid
going bankrupt. Since receiving
this money, many of these
institutions have refused to make
these funds available to
businesses and the general
public so that they can invest and
revitalize our failing economy.
Instead, they have bought other
failing financial institutions with
this money and have repaid the
loans they borrowed from the
federal government in record
time. This was not the reason
why congress gave them our tax
money. Many of our citizens are
still waiting for them to release
this money to help boost our
failing economy.
President Barack Obama is
too nice for these groups of
individuals and it is now time for
him to utilize the powers of the
executive office to show them
who is the President of the United
States of America.
The last President to come to
office in a similar situation was
one of our greatest Democratic
President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt. He knew that the
Republican congress was not
going to cooperate with him
so he signed several Executive
Orders to create the changes and
new bold initiatives he wanted
to implement. He was so
determined to make things
happen, that he threatened to
expand the Supreme Court to get
the judiciary branch on his side
in the interest of our nation and
people. Like President Obama,
many thought that he was a
socialist but he paid them no
attention and went ahead with his
programs. In then end he
prevailed and he was able to
revitalize the American economy
and prepare our country for
World War-2 to face and defeat
Japan and Germany.
The Republicans are happy
because they took back control
of the House of Representatives.
Nothing is going to change with
them because they are stuck
in their old ways. They want
everybody to change while they
remain the same. They are only
concerned in regaining power
while advancing the interest of
the wealthy over the middle class
and poor Americans.

and grew up in Santa Elena Town.
She attended St. Andrew Anglican
Primary and Sacred Heart College
both in San Ignacio Town.
After graduating from Sacred
Heart at age 16, Lynette migrated
to Los Angeles, California where
for almost a year she held house
cleaning and babysitting jobs.
She was certainly not intent on
being a house cleaner or babysitter
for very long because she wanted
more out of life. She told the
gathering that her lifelong dream
was to serve in the uniform services
primarily as a police officer. She
reminisces, about the way she

looked up to police
officers all dressed
in their neat p
and impressive
uniforms.
After her first
year in Los
Angeles, Lynette
began working as
a waitress and
attended school at
night to further her
education with an
Associates Degree.
Degree in hand, in
1994, she applied
and was accepted
to join the
Los Angeles Police
Department where
she has been
serving for the last
16 years. She gave
the gathering a
detailed description
of the six months Los Angeles Police Detective Lynette Mai
training she underwent such as the many written and oral examinations
as well as theory and practical policing exercises. She especially recalls
the gruesome physical exercises especially the 12-minute one and
half mile run, the obstacle course with the high wooden wall and other
strenuous exercises testing physical endurance as well as medical
examinations.
After graduating from the training academy, the recent graduates were
placed on one year probation in the company of training officers.
During that period she worked three twelve hour shifts each day. After
the one year probation she was then placed on patrol for two and a half

years, this she said was mandatory
before venturing into any special-
ized field of policing.
She received a first promotion
after seven years of service after
successfully sitting the Sergeants
and Detective's exams in 2001. She
is currently serving as a detective
shift supervisor.
After providing that brief
background, LAPD Detective
Lynette Mai went on to share her
views on what it takes to perform
to the best of one's ability as an
officer of the law. She advised that
being a police officer should be
viewed as a career, it not as just any
ordinary job.
She said that all officers are
expected to display professional-
ism at all times and that profession-
alism is primarily displayed in an
individual's physical appearance,
the way a person carries him or
herself as well as their physical
fitness. It is shown in the way an
individual speaks and interacts
with others; it is displayed in the
manner by which an officer writes
reports and the way one dresses
both on and off duty.
Detective Sergeant Lynette Mai is
also scheduled to visit on Friday,
November 5, with officers from the
Benque Viejo Town Police sub-for-
mation before she departs Belize on
Sunday, November 7, on the return
trip to Los Angeles and back to
work.

Reaching Out To Victims Of Hurricane Richard

RED CROSS HEADQUARTERS,
Belize City, Friday, October 29,
2010:
The Red Cross headquarters on
Gabourel Lane, Belize City was the
venue today for a 2:00 pm brief
handing over ceremony for much
needed financial assistance in aid
of victims of Hurricane Richard.
During the brief ceremony,
President of the Association of
Professional Engineers of Belize
(APEB),Victor Miranda handed
over a Belize 3,000 dollar cheque
to President of the Belize Red
Cross Tracy Taegar Panton and
Executive Director Lily Bowman.
In making the presentation APEB
President Victor Miranda informed
that the improvement in home
construction standards remain a
constant challenge in Belize. He is
of the opinion that the raising of
construction standards should help
alleviate the devastation residents
experience when natural disasters
strike.
While every assistance is certainly
most welcomed, the APEB
President recognizes that the
donation is but like a drop in the
bucket but that every drop counts
as relief organizations take on
the Herculean task to assist in the
recovery effort.
Miranda informed that APEB
remains committed to the future
development and supports the
Central Building Authority in the
enforcement of proper building
codes and standards which will
ensure a safe and better quality of
life for all Belizeans.
In accepting the donation, Red
Cross President Tracy Panton and
Executive Director Lily Bowman
expressed appreciation to APEB for
assisting in this time of most need
while assuring that every penny of
the donation will be utilized for its
intended purpose in a transparent
and accountable manner as is the
hallmark character of the Red
Cross.

Channel 5's Reports Are Twisted And Malicious

SaysThe Ministry Of Defence And Immigration

CITY OF BELMOPAN, Cayo
District, Thursday, November
4, 2010:
In response to allegations
regarding the issuance of visas
to Chinese nationals which was
recently aired on Channel 5,
the Ministry of Defence and

No Arrest'

Attack On

October 28, Dito was returning
to Santa Elena Town from his
farm located about 2 miles off
the Western Highway in the
village of Georgeville, Cayo,
when he reportedly stopped
the silver in color, double cab,
Dodge Ram pickup truck, with
Cayo license plates CY-C-2605,
in which he was driving alone,
to close the main access gate to
his farm as he was retiring from
the farm for the day. He was
returning to the vehicle when he
reportedly saw, what he initially
suspected as children fumbling
low in front of the vehicle. As
he was approaching the vehicle
a man suddenly sprang up from
the rear side of the parked truck
with a long stick in his hand and
came at him ordering him to
hand over what he had, within
what appeared to be a split
second he got the first hit to head
and he fell to the ground as two
male persons stood over him and
began beating him with sticks.
In an attempt to defend himself,
he reportedly made an effort to
pull out his licensed 9 mm
pistol from the right side of the
waist band of his pants but he
was too weak from the beating
to release the safety catch.
The attackers took the gun
loaded with 10 rounds in the
magazine along with his wallet
containing over one thousand
dollars in cash and personal
documents. They also searched
his pockets and removed other
cash he had therein. After
robbing him they disappeared
into the nearby bushes with
almost fifteen hundred dollars
in cash and with Dito's licensed
9mm, Smith & Wesson brand
pistol, with serial number
A746273, with a magazine
loaded with 10 bullets valued
at another fifteen hundred
dollars, all for a total loss of three
thousand dollars.
Despite the severe beating he
managed to crawl inside his

Immigration offers the follow-
ing clarifications:
There has always been a

handling of visa applications.

China (PRC), visa applications,

truck, barely seeing out of both
eyes with the right one almost
closed shut due to massive
swelling, he managed to drive
the two miles to the police
station in Georgeville where he
made the initial report.
The matter was compounded
when the policeman on duty
could not assist with driving
the Dodge Ram and so, in
severe pain and drastically
reduced visibility, accompanied
by the policeman, Dito drove
over 6 miles to the Loma Luz
hospital in Santa Elena, where
he was rushed into the
emergency ward. He was treated
for injuries to the head, back,
and arms. He was kept for the
overnight and released the
following day.
About half an hour after the
attack, one of the farm workers
realized that something had
occurred in the area when he
found his boss' eye glasses and
his cellular telephone on the
ground near the gate. By this
time however, Dito had already
driven himself to the police
station and the hospital.
Dito suspects that in their
haste to rob him and escape, the
attackers did not take any of
his two cellular telephones.
He has since been recuperat-
ing at home in Santa Elena,
Cayo. Today, seven days later,
the attack is still evident as his
eyes are still bloodshot with
visible bruises around the eye
sockets and large bruises on his
arms and back.
San Ignacio police is asking
anyone with information that
could assist in the apprehension
and conviction of those
responsible for attacking Dito

authorized by Government of
Belize, are regularly processed
through Belize's Embassy in
Havana, Cuba and via the
British Overseas Missions in
China.
Coming into office in 2008,
this government reviewed the
inherited visa process in order
to improve transparency and
reduce opportunities for impro-
prieties.
The new government
instituted a regimen where such
applicants are interviewed by
personnel at those overseas
missions where they applied. A
report of that interview and
recommendations for or against
visa approval is forwarded to the
Immigration and Nationality
Department and in collaboration
with the Ministry of Defence
and Immigration, the application
is either approved or denied.
Such correspondences are
copied to the Immigration
Officer-in-Charge at the Phillip
Goldson International Airport,
The Ministry of Defence and
Immigration, the Head of the
Police Special Branch, and the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs to
encourage intra-ministerial
information exchange and
transparency. Even subsequent
to the approval and issuance of
a visa, on arrival the individual
is subjected to further queries
relating to other entry
requirements before allowed
entry into Belize.
The recent Channel 5
report displaying official
correspondences bearing
legitimate visa approvals is
intended to confuse the Belizean
public as it relates to the
legitimate process where
persons apply, are screened,
and either approved or denied,
in contrast to those illegal
undertakings in respect of those
three suspicious aircraft arriving
at the Phillip Goldson
International Airport on
September 17 & 18 and
October 3, 2010 for which there
was no legitimate visa process.
An inspection of the
documentation for the incidents
under investigation clearly
indicate that there was no
interview reports or required
recommendations for or against
the issuance of visas for those
individuals and obviously
with no approval or denial

correspondences from the
Department of Immigration and
Nationality Service.
As a matter of fact, the Police
investigation has confirmed
that the purported visa numbers
recorded on the arrival forms
were in fact locked in a vault at
the Department of Immigration
and Nationality. These visas
have therefore never been issued
to any of Belize's diplomatic
missions abroad for subsequent
issuance to applicants.
In an effort to clarify the
misleading and mischievous
report aired by Channel 5, at
the request of the Minister of
Defence and Immigration,
Channel 5 agreed to the
Wednesday November 3,
interview on the subject.
Notwithstanding, Minister
Perdomo is still waiting for
any Channel 5 reporter to show
up for the interview. They have
thus far failed to show up.
Furthermore, the Ministry of
Defence and Immigration notes
with concern the attempt by an
opposition political aspirant/
attorney-at-law, to use legitimate
official documents sneeked out
of the department to cloud the
more serious issues regarding
those six Immigration Officers
who were arrested and
criminally charged in correction
with those questionable arrivals
under reference, some of whom
are being defended, in court, by
this same attorney.
The Ministry of Defence and
Immigration views Channel 5's
reports as twisted and malicious.
The Ministry condemns the
attempt to confuse the Belizean
public with the apparent sole
intent to gain cheap political
mileage.
