Or Are We Waiting For A Major Accident To Happen?

The low laying temporary wooden bridge, connecting the twin towns of
Santa Elena and San Ignacio, was built several years ago as a temporary
crossing while the main Hawksworth Bridge was undergoing major
repairs. Today this bridge has evolved into anything but temporary.
In fact it is of such vital importance to transportation in the west that
when it was out of commission for almost three weeks during the great
floods of October 2008, the motoring public was severely inconvenienced.
There were long lines of traffic on both sides of the Macal River when
the Hawksworth Bridge was pressed into providing 2 way service.
The many years of service has taken its toll on the low laying
temporary bridge. The Ministry of Works is now frequently replacing
planks and repairing the carriage way; However, the subsurface,
especially some of the wooden pillars supporting the structure, have
deteriorated to the point of creating a hazardous condition.
To the unsuspecting motorist who drives over the surface, all appears to
be well and fine; However, to the swimmer who recreates in the waters
of the Macal River near the bridge, the deterioration is real and appears
to be an accident just waiting to happen.
Except on those rear occasions when the Hawksworth Bridge is pressed
into emergency two-way operation, the low laying temporary wooden
bridge is used as a crossing for all forms of vehicular and pedestrian
traffic. It bears the weight of loaded petroleum carriers and cement cargo
trucks while the subsurface continues to deteriorate with every passing
day.
Having full charge of the structure as it forms part of the national
network of roads, the Ministry of Works, no doubt is aware of the
situation. The question therefore is: When will this situation be rectified
or are we waiting for a major accident to happen?

The weather was very hot and
this man wanted desperately to
take a dive in the Macal River
but he did not want to get his
clothes wet.
He looked around and there
was not a person in sight so he
took off all his clothes and got
into the water.
After some delightful minutes
of cool swimming, a pair of old
ladies walked onto the edge of
the river in his direction. He
panicked, got out of the water
and grabbed a nearby bucket.

He held the bucket in front of
his private parts and sighed with
relief.
The ladies looked at him. He
felt awkward but still managed
a faint smile.
When she was very close to
him, one of the ladies said:
"Mister, I have a special gift, I
can read minds."
"Impossible", said the
embarrassed man, "You really
know what I am thinking at
this very moment?'
"Yes", the lady replied.

"So what are you waiting for,
tell me what I am thinking."
The lady answered, "At this

Discarding The Unfaithful Girlfriend

John was serving a second
tour of duty in Iraq when, amidst
the daily bombings and the
uncertainty of surviving from
one day to the next, he received
this letter from his girlfriend.
"Dear John;
I regret to inform you that
I am breaking off the
engagement because I have
found someone new. Please
return all the pictures I sent
you,
Bye Jenny."

John went out and collected
from his friends all their
unwanted photographs of
women that he could find.
He bundled them all together
and sent them back to the girl
with a note saying:
"Dear Jenny,
I regret to inform you that I
cannot remember which one is
you. Please go through this
pile, pick out yours and return
the others.
Bye John."

The Ministry Responds

Dear Editor;
The southern village of San
Antonio in the Toledo District
now has a spanking new and
impressive poli-clinic.
Out here in the west, a new
poly-clinic has been in the mak-
ing for several years. The

Ministry of Health, Belmopan
Dear Ms. Phillips
Questions that readers are
repeatedly asking.
1. "When will the new
Poli-Clinic in San Ignacio
come into operation ?"

building was started by the
previous administration.
Do you know when our new
clinic in San Ignacio will be
coming into operation and what
is delaying the process?
Angel Chan
San Ignacio Cayo

2. "What is delaying the com-
ing into operation of thisfacil-
ity?"
Can you please assist us with
answers to these questions.
Nyani Azueta-August
STAR, Editor

Dear Editor;
Thanks for letting us have
the opportunity to answer these
questions.
To answer the second first:
2) The reason for the delay is that
we need to purchase and install
a back up generator for the new
facility.
The previous administration
had reprogrammed the funds
identified for the generator to
other activities.
This administration was
forced to look for an additional

$200,000.00 for this purpose.
1) The good news is that
funds have now been
identified. Tenders for the
purchase and installation of a
new generator were invited and
five bids are currently being
reviewed.
The installation is expected
to be complete and the
hospital opened before the end
of June.

Joel "Dara" Robinson Caring & Sharing

Education Week 2009 (May
10-16, 2009) is being held
under the theme: "Better
Schools, Better Citizens, Better
Belize-whatever it takes: It's
Everybody's Business" In keep-
ing with a tradition started in
Education Week 2008, today on
the KREM Wake Up Belize
Morning Show the Minister of
Education, Hon. Patrick Faber,
bestowed the second annual
Spirit of Ubuntu Award on a
deserving citizen.

This year's honoree is Joel
'Dara' Robinson. Even with
minimal personal resources and
humble personality, Mr.
Robinson has taken it upon
himself to help children with
meals at two schools and is
trying to expand to other
schools.
What is remarkable when you
speak to Mr. Robinson is his
genuine concern for our young
people and for our society.
He is not doing this for

recognition, nor is it merely
about trying to ensure that other
children would not have the
same experience he had as a
child of not having enough to eat
at home.
No, he has a genuine concern
for his fellow men and women/
brothers and sisters.
He truly embodies the Spirit of
Ubuntu...he is truly showing his
humanness through his concern
and love for others.
He is not only helping to make
better schools, but he is at the
same time being a better citizen
and helping to create a better
Belize.
He is truly an example we
must all follow and this is the
kind of volunteerism and
patriotism that we should
inspire in all Belizeans.

very successful.
Everyone who attended
enjoyed themselves and had a
good time.
There was lots of good food
and the music was extremely
entertaining.
Hats off to Noemi
Manzanero for her bright ideas,
her hard work and great spirit in
assisting to make this event a
great success. We would also
like to thank Lucas Medina
and the young man from the En-
vironmental Club.
A big thank you also goes out
to Victor Perez for his time
and the use of his truck for
transporting all those loads of
sand, we could not have done it
without Mr. Perez.
A special thanks to the Village
Council, and especially to the
Village Chairman Mr. Manuel
Balan and a few others. Thanks
for all the help. You've been
there every time we've needed
you.
Finally a great big thank you
to the mothers and fathers and
the young people from the
village who made both events
the success they were. Keep up
the good work.

every Sunday in Bullet Tree

Ubuntu describes an African
philosophy which, when roughly
translated, means 'Iam because
We are.'
It speaks to a sense of
community and a solidarity with
other human beings-your
fellow men and women,
brothers and sisters.
It speaks to a recognition that
one's humanity is intricately
bound up in that of others.
In short, one can only fulfill
one's humanity through other
human beings. It's the
realization then we diminish
others, in whatever way, we
diminish ourselves. When we
think of others as being less
human, you are in fact being less
human yourself. However,
when we see the value in other
people...when we live for each
other...when we show concern
for our fellow human beings we
are being most human.

WELCOME AND BEJERANO CHARGED
FOR ROBBING CHINESE GROCER

I llClo u eI".II, I..a

BELIZE CITY, Thursday,
May 14, 2009:
May 15, is celebrated as the
International Day of the Family.
This day highlights the
importance of families. It aims
at fostering equality, bringing
about a fuller sharing of
domestic responsibilities and
employment opportunities.
The activities undertaken to
commemorate the day, work
towards supporting families in
the discharge of their functions;
and promote the inherent
strengths of families, including
their great capacity of
self-reliance.
The National Committee
for Families and Children
is encouraging committee
members, partners and the
general public to impress upon
families a time for safe family
socialization.
As we celebrate May 15,
under the theme "Fathers-
Mothers-Families: Challenges
in a changing world"; the
NCFC challenges you to take
this special day recognized for
families, and be creative in
reaching and addressing the
challenges that face our families
and society on a whole.
The year 1994 was
proclaimed as the International
Year of Families by the United
Nations. This was a response to

changing social and economic
structures, which have affected
and still affect the structure and
stability of family units in many
regions of the globe.
The International Day of
Families is an occasion to reflect
on the work started during 1994
and to celebrate the importance
of families, people, societies and
cultures around the world. It has
been held every year since 1995.
Family constitutes the basic unit
of society. Hence, the widest
possible protection and
assistance should be accorded to
families so that they fully
assume their responsibilities
within the community to the
provisions of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights,
the Declaration on Social
Progress and Developments, the
Convention on the Elimination
of all forms of Discrimination
against women, and the
Convention on the Rights of
the Child.
For any further information
about International Day of
Families and Fun Day activities,
in Belize and the rest of the
Districts, contact: Pearl Stuart,

Committee for Families and
Children, 62 Cleghorn Street,

from inside the cash register.
Bing Chi told the police that the
incident resulted in him losing
approximately $1,200 ($700 in
cash and $500 in phone cards).
Bing's Supermarket is located
at the corer of Bishop Martin
and Hibiscus Streets in Santa
Elena Town, Cayo
After pulling off the broad
daylight robbery, the two
assailants exited the store and
ran down Hibiscus Street as they
distanced themselves from the
scene.
Although this is the first
incident of robbery experienced
by Bing Chi since taking over
the store about a year ago, the
previous two Chinese grocers

who operated from this location
have each been robbed at least
once. This has led each of them
to give up the store subsequent
to each of the two previous
incidents.
