The park comprises approximately 56 percent (10 square miles) of the island of St. John. Caneel Bay Resort is located on a 150acre peninsula on the northwest side of the island. Caneel Bay Resort was originally developed by Laurance Rockefeller beginning in 1956. In 1983, Jackson Hole Preserve donated the resorts 150 acres of land to the U.S. government for inclusion within the Virgin Islands National Park subject to a 40 year Retained Use Estate Indenture Agreement (RUE). The RUE is scheduled to expire on September 30, 2023. In 2010, Public Law 111-261 was enacted and authorized the National Park Service (NPS) to enter into a long-term lease with the owner of the RUE for continued resort operations upon relinquishment of the remaining term of the RUE. The proposed project includes the conversion of the RUE to a long term lease under NPS purview. The NPS has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze the environmental consequences associated with the proposed conversion of the RUE on physical, natural, cultural, and human resources, and park operations. Copies of the EA are available at the Park Visitor Center at 1300 Cruz Bay Creek in Cruz Bay, St. John. Directions to the center are available online (www.nps.gov/viis) or by phone (340.776.6201). The Environmental Assessment will also be available on the National Park Services Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website http://parkplanning.nps.gov. Under Choose a Park click on Virgin Islands National Park and follow the link to Caneel Bay Resort Lease Environmental Assessment. Please send comments by August 15, 2013. It is NPS practice to make all comments, including names and addresses of respondents who provide that information, avail able for public review. Individuals may request that NPS withhold their name and/or address from public disclosure. If you wish to do this, commenters using the website can make such a request by checking the box keep my contact information private. If submitting written comments, please state this request at the beginning of your comment. NPS will honor such requests to the extent allowable by law. U.S. Department of the Interior
