Perhaps you already know
about macromolecules
and the University of
Florida-after all, the program
has been functioning for 60 years
'4 Wnow. It began with Professor George
Butler's research group and a couple
of others, one of which was that of Professor Charles Reid in the
Department of Chemistry. Professor Reid was among the first
in the world to investigate the use of polymer membranes for
reverse osmosis purification of salt water to create pure drink-
ing water.
Consider where things stand today. The Center for Macro-
molecular Science & Engineering-The MacroCenter-spans the
campus of the University of Florida, the nation's fourth-larg-
est educational institution. Sixteen faculty members from four
departments within two colleges comprise the center. More than
100 graduate students and postdoctoral associates are studying
with us today. The inside pages of this brochure tell you who the
faculty are and briefly what they and their students do: diverse,
interdisciplinary research such as that found in biomaterials,
nano-organic and organic composites, polymer interfaces, supra-
molecular chemistry, electroactive materials, infrared and optical
characterization, polymer synthesis, mechanistic polymer chem-
istry.
