According to the dictionary, to retire means to withdraw
from circulation. When we think of the years that Miss
Matthews has spent as a member of the Canal Zone
Schools System and especially at Balboa High School, we
who know her well realize for a fact that this will not be
true!

To be in circulation is a part of her life at school, at
home, at church, in the community, or wherever she might
be. She is a most kind hearted person who will do anmlthirg
that she possibly can for anyone.

As we say farewell to a very familiar face at Balboa High
School, we at the school know that she will be missed but
certainly not forgotten. The best to you in the new life that
lies ahead.

--Zr. Garrof ,1;n person
<***:."W.I .6i: *AMNWS&3::a^,

In every community man has needed someone to use his
skill and tools to create this and repair that. The Roman
Gods called this man Vulcan. Some societies have called
him an artisan or a craftsman, but at Balboa High School
we call him Mr. Anderson.

How many Christmas decorations, sets for plays, crutches
for a special student, and other projects too numerous to
mention have been cheerfully made by him or under his
watchful eye while he taught his skill to large groups of stu-
dents?

As Mr. Anderson departs for his new and different experi-
ence in the world of "retirement," we say, "So long -
your absence will be felt in many ways."

The 1st Battalion of the Canal Zone Junior ROTC program is
located at the Balboa High School. The 1st Battalion is organized
into a Battalion Staff, four Infantry style companies, a Drill
Team and a Band Company.
The training schedule of the program is five hours of weekly
instructions. These hours consist of drill and ceremonies, physi-
cal training, military tr.iiii,; and an inspection.
The ROTC has yearly competitions within the Battalion and
also with the 2nd Battalion from Cristobal in areas such as drill,
