very near causing him the loss of a
fine horse. He was driving down Zack
street, and at the intersection of Pearce
and Jefferson his borse suddenly sank
Pinto a quick-sand ibed. and it was
with some difficulty that he was extri-

NEW ORLEANS SAILED AT ONCE

Gunboat Machias to Follow-Latest
Detai e of President's Sudden
Death.

Washington, July 28-(8peciaI).-,Thee
cruiser 2New Orleans and the gunboats
Machias were to-day ordered t San
Domingo, to protect American inter-
eats.
The New Orleans lost no time in get-
ting away, sailing from Newport to-
night.
The cruiser will arrive at her desti-
nation aboot Tuesday.
The Machias will follow the New Or-
leans as rapidly as possible.
The action was deemed necessary by
the administration in view of the re-
ports of threatened trouble and insur-
rection which come from San Dozingo.
The Governor of Santiago confirms
the general opinion that the assassina-
tion of President Hereux was a po-
litical crime. It is reported that the
asasins party are gathering forces pre-
paratory to an attack on the govern-
ment troops.
It has been learned that Caceros'
companions when President Hereum
was killed were Juan Pichardo and
Htoracio Vasquese. The latter is a
brother to a deputy in Parliament.
The father of Caceros, the assassin,
was put to death by order of President
Hereaux in 1854.
Foreseeing the possibility of disturb-
ances, and in order to -he prepared for
any emergency, General Pepin, Gov-
ernor of Santiago, has taken impor-
tant precautionary measures, and has
decided to demand that arms and am-
munition be forwarded to him from
Santo Domingo. Advices from San-
tiago received here at a late hour re-
port that the situation there is becom-
ing more serious,

Tampa news from the Gulf Metropolis
of Flosida has been anxiously looked
for upon the arrival of every Plant
Line steamer. Not only the many Tam.
paites now residing in Cuba's capital
city, but the cigar mantUfacturers and
the cigar makers have been equally in-
terested in the outcome. There are
thousands of cigar makers in Havana
who are out of employment, or only
working from two to three days in the
week. who would gladly take the places
of the disgruntled .men in Tampa if
they were able to raise the necesary
amount to pay the steamship fare from
Havana to Port Tampa. The factories
here are not working full time or with
a full orce, and the present codition
will continue for several months, at
leat. Few of the locked out cigar

being sent from Havana to aid the
trikcs, is all moonshine. There are
