Drs. Nat Frazer and Jerry Bennett joined our group to discuss the second round of the Florida
First initiative on June 27-29, 2001. The first Florida FIRST meeting was to set priorities and was
traditional. This second meeting is to review progress to date and to make any mid-course
corrections, if needed. It will be a more integrated approach. The FAC was asked to help find
people in the state who can act as facilitators. Please contact Dr. Frazer (firstname.lastname@example.org)
or Dr. Bennett (email@example.com) with suggestions. Please include their full phone number
and address of each person and why that person might be a good facilitator. They also asked the
FAC to suggest individuals who could act as recorders and reporters for this meeting. FAC
members should send recommendations to Sue Percival, Secretary, for committee discussion at
the February 15th meeting.
The informal evaluation of Dr. Martin is underway and is about half completed.
The State of IFAS address is scheduled for Thursday, 25 of January, 2-4 pm. Provost David
Coburn, Vice President Mike Martin, and Deans Cheek, Jones and Waddill will speak briefly,
followed by a question and answer session..
It was determined that we needed the guidelines of the special pay increase before we can make
our recommendations. Sue Percival will talk to William Fleming regarding current guidelines and
work on an appropriate recommendation to the Faculty Senate.
After some discussion regarding Dr. Martin's Faculty Development memo, the FAC feels the real
problem in recruiting and retaining quality faculty is the issue of money. However, it might be a
good experiment which would require little formalization if tried over a 3-5 year period. The FAC
will continue the discussion at the February meeting
Updates from Dr. Martin:
Calvin Arnold will resign from IRREC as of Feb 11
Charlie Sims has assumed the position of interim chair of FSHN
A replacement for Milt Morris, Government Relations, has been interviewed and an offer
will be made soon
The Faculty/A&P Directory will be back from the printers soon.
Dr. Martin has verbal agreements that UF/IFAS ought to offer fee waivers to those off
campus and that the county faculty may be elected to Graduate Faculty Status if
qualified. Guidelines will be shared with faculty when the final approval is granted
The first class of Senior Fellows is in the nominating period. Dr. Martin will be asking the
FAC to review some of the packets
Faculty Salary Adjustments may be confirmed by the end of January.
