CARE OF CAVIES

By Jess L Strosnider
Mt.Washington, Ohio
Throughout the summer we need
not worry much about our little friend,
the cavy, or commonly called the guinea
pig, for at that time we have plenty of
green feed necessary for the success-
ful rearing of cavies. But in the win-
ter (especially here in the north) when
the frost has robbed us of most green
grasses, we must look for greens that
will carry us through the winter with-
out having to spend' much for cabbage
lettuce, carrots, etc.

them in' fine physical condition.
SCavies should be wintered in a warm
building, free from draughts and ar-
ranged so same can be well ventilated
on moderate days: I have just a com-
mon gable roof building with large win-
dows in each gable, hinged at bottom
and arranged so' I can open, them back
about one foot, and which are held in
place by a chain. 1 raise several hun-
dred cavies a year, and have but little
loss, in fact not worth mentioning.

When writing to advertisers
please mention Southern Poultry
and Small Stock.

In my 'long experience with these
little animals I have found nothing bet-
ter than rye-just common rye. Sow
it in the fall, from September 1 to Nov-
ember 1, and it will grow all winter
and can be cut and it will grow again,
and can be cut several times and always
be green rye, as freezing does not hurt
it. And how the cavies go for green rye
at the evening meal. A little who'eoats
or wheat bran should be fed in the
morning, and on these feeds they will
thrive wonderfully. A feed of carrots
once a week acts as a) tonic and keeps
