Abstract: This paper qualitatively and spatially evaluates the access, availability, and cost of fresh fruits and vegetables in Gainesville, Florida as a measure of community food security. In concert with Florida Organic Growers and Consumers, Inc. (FOG), this research combines independent data collection with information gathered during FOG’s community-based food assessment. It includes both a quantitative analysis of the relationships between geographic and economic factors, including residential location, income level, food variety and cost, and a qualitative synthesis of food purchasing behaviors collected from 227 community surveys and two public meetings attended by over 80 community members. The locations and sizes of retail food outlets and the costs and variety of food within eight grocery stores and eight convenience stores were collected. Measures of total population, income levels, and percentage of individuals below poverty were acquired from the United States Census Bureau. Both the quantitative and qualitative components of my research suggest that residential location and income level are strong indicators of the access, availability, and cost of fresh food in Gainesville. The data illustrate that low-income residents living in East Gainesville face heightened challenges to accessing healthy, fresh food and are disproportionately food insecure.
