This year the celebration en-US takes on a sadder than normal significance, as red en-US tide has taken its toll.en-US Watercraft mortality and the 188 manatees lost en-US to red tide as of Oct. 24 remain two of the greatest en-US threats to the manatee population. Red tide acts en-US as a neurotoxin, giving manatees seizures that can en-US result in drowning. Manatees may exhibit muscle en-US twitches, lack of coordination, labored breathing, en-US and an inability to maintain body orientation.en-US In total, 703 manatees have died so far this year en-US from all causes.en-US While red tides do occur naturally, the freen-US-en-US quency and intensity of recent events are firmly en-USRed tide increases en-US dangers to manatees en-USAudubon, en-US Health en-US Dept. agree en-US cats belong en-US indoors en-USINDIAN RIVER COUNTY The en-US Health Department is warning that outen-US -en-US door cats pose health problems, and it is en-US looking for common ground with interen-US -en-US ested parties to find humane solutions.en-US In a report titled Free-roaming Cats en-US & Public Health Risks presented to the en-US Indian River County Board of Commisen-US -en-US sioners Oct. 23, Miranda Hawker, en-US Health Officer for the Florida Departen-US-en-US ment of Health in Indian River County, en-US and Tad Stone, the countys Emergency en-US Services Director, made the case for en-US humanely removing cats from the outen-US -en-US doors.en-US They found allies in the Audubon en-US Society, which called for the removal of en-US outdoor cats from the landscape.en-US According to the Health Dept. report, en-US there are an estimated 38,000 pet cats in en-US Indian River County. Of those, 66 peren-US -en-US cent, or 25,000, spend all or part of their en-US lives outdoors.en-US Add to that an estimated 30,000 stray en-US or feral cats in the county, and the total en-US is 55,000 or more cats spending at least en-US some time outdoors. When we use the en-US term free-roaming, we need to include en-US not only those stray and feral cats that en-US grew up in the wild, but also owned anien-US -en-US mals who spend time outside unattenden-US -en-US ed, Ms. Hawker told the Commissionen-US -en-US ers.en-US The numbers of estimated cats in the en-US county are probably low. 3 en-USVERO BEACH Champion Home en-US Health Care in Vero Beach has been chosen en-US several times by Hometown News readers as en-US Best Home Health Care Provider. After en-US spending some time with owners Tom and en-US Anne Michaels and the rest of the staff, it en-US became apparent that readers like them en-US because they work so hard to understand en-US what the client wants. And they smile.en-US With people who havent had home en-US health care before, they are often hesitant en-US because they feel someone coming into their en-US home is going to dictate to them, and take en-US away their freedom, Mr. Michaels said. en-US They dont want someone else in their en-US home telling them what to do. At Champion, en-US its quite the opposite. Our aides know that en-US the client is the boss. Anything the client en-US needs, our aide should be able to provide en-US them. Excellence is not a one-time act, its a en-US habit.en-US This year is the 25th anniversary of en-US Champion Home Health Care, which en-US started in Boca Raton in 1993. Tom and en-US Anne Michaels have run the Vero Beach en-US office for 12 years.en-US Champion Home Health Care helps en-US Indian River County seniors with many en-US needs, including wake up and/or tuck in; en-US bathing/dressing; assistance with walking; en-US physical therapy; shopping; errands; doctor en-US appointments; medication reminders; low en-US vision services; meal preparation; light en-US housework; in-facility assistance; skilled en-US nursing services; Alzheimer specialist.en-US Most important for many new clients, en-US they respect seniors independence.en-US Put yourself in your parents situation, en-US Mr. Michaels explained. Theyve lived en-US independently for so many years. They want en-US to remain independent as much as they can. en-US And theyre adults. They may be having en-US difficulty with certain activities like bathing, en-US dressing, making meals, but theyre not en-US children. They usually know what needs to en-US be done, theyre just having trouble doing it. en-US So they want someone to assist them with en-US what needs to be done, and thats where we en-US come in. We will do whatever they need to en-US keep them safe and happy in their own en-US home.en-US Thats our motto, keeping our clients safe en-US and happy and making sure we do it with en-US excellence.en-US In order to deliver that level of service en-US consistently, Champion has built a highly en-US qualified team.en-US Amie Wilson, RN, is Champions Director en-US of Nursing. Ms. Wilsons nursing en-US background and expertise includes home en-US care and acute care cardiac nursing. She was en-US previously a Director of Nursing for Corizon en-US Health.en-US What attracted me to Champion was all en-US the awards, Ms. Wilson said. Ive heard so en-US many good things about Champion. I got en-US lucky when I got hired here. Ms. Wilson is en-US responsible for many aspects of the service en-US including managing client and caregiver en-US satisfaction, managing nursing care, and en-US matching the right caregiver with the client.en-US As I spoke with the employees, each en-US discussed the importance of that proper en-US match of caregiver and client.en-US Its never a guess as to whether a person en-US has the right skill set for a job, said Jennifer en-US Bono, Champions Human Resource en-US Manager. Ms. Bono makes sure she knows en-US each employees exact skills, so she can help en-US the team meet the needs and desires of each en-US client.en-US We make sure we have the best people, en-US said Ms. Bono. When we send someone en-US into a home, its my job to make sure they en-US are qualified for what we are sending them en-US to do. We want very friendly, kind, caring, en-US well-trained caregivers. Ms. Bono checks en-US each employees references, background, en-US and credentials to make sure they are perfect en-US for the job.en-US When Billing and Payroll Manager Kathy en-US Hirsch needed care for an immediate family en-US member, she chose Champion, based on en-US what shes learned in her four years with the en-US company.en-US We have caregivers with 20 or more years en-US experience, Ms. Hirsch said. My husband en-US had a hip operation and I had one of the en-US LPNs come to my home and check on him.en-US Like the other employees, Ms. Hirsch en-US discussed the importance of matching the en-US client with exactly the right person. Making en-US sure every client gets exactly who and what en-US they want is key to their business model.en-US You dont want to let just anyone in your en-US home, Ms. Hirsch said. 4 en-USattributable to human activity, said Anne en-US Harvey Holbrook, Staff Attorney for Save en-US the Manatee Club. Land-based nutrients en-US feed red tides, which are further exacerbaten-US -en-US ed by the deluge released from Lake en-US Okeechobee. The sources of these nutrients en-US are many. Septic systems, agricultural fertilen-US -en-US izer, animal waste, and urban runoff are en-US poorly managed throughout the state and en-US end up in our springs, rivers, and coastal en-US systems where they fuel the toxic blooms en-US that threaten both natural and economic en-US resources.en-US Martin County adopted the term Lost en-US Summer in 2013 to describe the disaster en-US caused by discharges from Lake Okeechobee en-US into coastal communities, said Dr. Katie en-US Tripp, Director of Science and Conservation en-US for Save the Manatee Club. Posted signs en-US warned against swimming, fishing, or othen-US-en-US erwise coming in contact with the water that en-US was covered in guacamole-thick algae. en-US The moniker was unfortunately applicable en-US again in 2016 and now again in 2018.en-US Red tide has killed at least 1,100 Florida en-US manatees over the last 23 years. Others are en-US victims of the toxic cyanobacterial bloom en-US associated with discharges from Lake en-US Okeechobee, said Ms. Holbrook. Together, en-US these algae blooms consume oxygen from en-US the water, cause respiratory and neurologien-US -en-US cal distress, and kill acres of aquatic vegetaen-US-en-US tion essential to manatee survival.en-US Floridas waters are in crisis, said Dr. en-US Tripp. Because blooms now occur so freen-US -en-US quently, they are no longer characterized as en-US unusual mortality events. The organism that en-US causes red tide is naturally-occurring. The en-US input of human-generated pollution into en-US our coastal waters, which causes that organen-US -en-US ism to bloom and wreak havoc, is far from en-US natural. The same is true for the various en-US algae blooms that have occurred in the Indien-US -en-US an River Lagoon in recent years, resulting in en-US the deaths of manatees, dolphins, fish, and en-US sea birds, and the loss of tens of thousands en-US of acres of vitally-important seagrass.en-US Singer Jimmy Buffett started Save the en-US Manatee Club in 1981 with Bob Graham, en-US former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator. en-US While talking backstage at one of his conen-US -en-US certs, the two men shared their mutual conen-US -en-US cern for manatees. We want them to feel confident that en-US we can take care of their parents.en-US Some people have had home health care en-US before with other providers and had a bad en-US experience, said Mr. Michaels. It's true, the founders didn't en-US know about the changes to come. The 1700 en-US economy was agrarian. Commerce was in en-US its infancy. en-US But, the founders were not stupid. They en-US knew they were being had. In the Declaraen-US -en-US tion of Independence they identified the en-US enemy and named his crimes. They en-US exclaimed that tyranny must not be toleraten-US -en-US ed and that Americans must rise up against en-US any government that embraced tyranny. en-US This was not to be done lightly, without en-US great consideration and thought, but with en-US deliberation and conviction. They wanted en-US liberty.en-US So, how would the American founders en-US vote? Well, they no longer have a vote but I en-US think they would say, use caution Amerien-US -en-US cans. Our foundation is strong, but the voice en-US of the naysayers is loud and seduen-USctive. Let's en-US remember what Abraham Lincoln said in en-US Gettysburg, ...that government of the peoen-US-en-US ple, by the people, for the people, shall not en-US perish from the face of the Earth.en-USRacism is learneden-USI am convinced that racism is a learned en-US behavior. Children are not prejudiced by en-US nature. If you watch a group of pre-school en-US children of different races, different culen-US -en-US tures playing together . it's amazing en-US how they enjoy playing together and get en-US along, inspite of their differences.en-US So, how is prejudice and racism learned? en-US From what parents and other adults say to en-US or about other people groups, the attitudes en-US they show toward other people, and in genen-US -en-US eral how adults treat others. Children tend en-US to repeat what they see and hear from adults. en-US Thankfully I was brought up in a home en-US where prejudice was not taught or practiced. en-US I have had many friends of other races, and en-US still do to this day. Just because a child is en-US brought up in a disadvantaged environment en-US doesn't mean he is given the right to be prejen-US -en-US udiced or racist.en-US The Bible says: "Unless you become as liten-US-en-US tle children, you will not enter the kingdom en-US of heaven."en-USKeep cats out of harm's wayen-USI enjoy reading the Rants and Raves, find en-US-en-US ing some of the writers comical, but more en-US often sad because of the uninformed comen-US -en-US ments. For example, the person writing en-US about stray cats being killed by coyotes. en-US Doesn't that person know feral cats are killen-US -en-US ing millions of birds annually. Coyotes are en-US doing a great service. If you have a cat, keep en-US it indoors.en-USGunsen-USI read an email last week from a Canadien-US -en-US an, who lives in the US permanently, quesen-US -en-US tioning why Americans want guns, quesen-US -en-US tioning about semi automatic guns. Well, we en-US like our guns, especially in the south, and en-US that's really our business. No, I don't own a en-US semi automatic, but if I wanted one I'd like en-US that choice, with all that's going on in the en-US country, yes. 7 en-USment of the Save the Manatee Committee, en-US comprised of leaders from business and en-US government. Save the Manatee Club was en-US started shortly after to get the public en-US involved in manatee conservation efforts.en-US Save the Manatee Club has been working en-US with the state to develop stronger plans to en-US manage nutrients in important watersheds en-US and to establish additional protected areas en-US for manatees.en-US Many seasonal manatee zones in Florida en-US come into effect in November, and boaters en-US should pay close attention to signage indien-US -en-US cating slow or idle speeds. Waterway users en-US should also keep their distance from manaen-US-en-US tees to avoid possible harassment. Never en-US separate a mother from her calf, as calves en-US depend on their mothers for up to two years.en-US Save the Manatee Club also asks boaters en-US to take photos of any scars on manatees. The en-US FWC maintains a database, and scars from en-US encounters with boats are the best way to en-US definitively identify individual manatees.en-US If you see a scarred manatee, take a en-US photo and forward them to us, Patrick en-US Rose, Executive Director of Save the Manaen-US -en-US tee Club, told Hometown News. Well get en-US them into the database. It helps keep track en-US of those manatees, to know which animals en-US from previous collisions are where. Just en-US being able to add into our information that a en-US particular manatee was at that location at en-US that time is of great value.en-US Save the Manatee Club encourages kayaken-US-en-US ers to enjoy the uniquely magical experience en-US of interacting with curious manatees, but to en-US do so in a completely passive way.en-US Do not feed them or even offer them en-US water, said Mr. Rose. That can just set en-US them up for problems. Just relax and enjoy en-US them. Manatees will often come up and be en-US curious about the kayaks. The best thing to en-US do is just have a passive interaction, dont do en-US anything, let the manatee decide what she en-US wants to do.en-US Manatees have long been one of the great en-US tourist attractions in Indian River County. en-US While they can be seen in a variety of locaen-US -en-US tions, the most consistent and easily-accesen-US-en-US sible is Round Island County Park on state en-US road AIA, just north of the St. Lucie County en-US line. Go to the west side of the park and en-US walk to any of multiple observation areas. en-US For the best experience, bring a kayak, en-US which can be rented from multiple Vero en-US Beach businesses and brought right to you en-US at the park. Floating among a group of manen-US -en-US atees at Round Island is nothing short of en-US spectacular. Dont forget to bring a camera.en-US Sick, injured, or orphaned manatees en-US should be reported to the Florida Fish and en-US Wildlife Conservation, because they can en-US often be saved if rescued in time.en-US If manatees exposed to red tide can be en-US moved out of the affected area by trained en-US biologists and stabilized at a critical care en-US facility, their prognosis is often very good, en-US said Dr. Tripp.en-US To report such animals or to alert the en-US FWC to any other hazardous conditions or en-US incidents affecting marine wildlife, call en-US 1-888-404-FWCC (3992). Students en-USin a community.en-US This past May we had a rabies alert. en-US There is a back-story to that rabies alert. We en-US had an open feeding within 300-feet of a en-US rabid cat attack. We had attempted repeaten-US -en-US edly to cite the person doing the feeding. en-US Weve had two rabies deaths in Florida in en-US Oct. 2017 and Jan. 2018. Prior to this we had en-US not had a rabies death in Florida in 60 years. en-US We frequently see rabid outdoor cats due to en-US outside feeding and commingling with racen-US-en-US coons.en-US The Health Dept. challenged the notion en-US that trap/neuter/release or return is safe.en-US The basic idea when you talk about trap/en-US neuter/release or return is that an animal is en-US trapped, theyd be spayed or neutered and en-US given one rabies vaccine, and released back en-US to where they were found, Ms. Hawker said. en-US One vaccination for rabies does not confer en-US immunity. That requires a rabies vaccinaen-US-en-US tion, a booster a year later, and then every en-US one-to-three years. Often these feral cats are en-US immune suppressed, and other wildlife is en-US attracted to feeding stations.en-US Tony Brown of the Indian River NAACP en-US spoke of the burden outdoor cats add to a en-US community like Gifford.en-US This is a community that already has a en-US multitude of problems, Mr. Brown said. en-US TNR does not solve the root problem. And en-US in this community, how often do you think en-US that someone who is scratched or bitten en-US would report it? With all the other health en-US factors, the poverty? What happens when en-US someone in this community gets rabies? To en-US me this is Def Con 3 in a community such as en-US Gifford.en-US In addition to the disease risk, Ms. Hawken-US-en-US er said Its not a good environment for en-US them outside. They are a domestic animal.en-US Please keep in mind that domestic cats en-US are not wild animals, and releasing them en-US into the wild treats them as if they are. We en-US want to talk about possible solutions, Ms. en-US Hawker said. My intent in terms of public en-US health is not to demonize cats. My intent is en-US to talk about protecting cats, and protecting en-US people. Because when you protect cats, en-US youre protecting the public health.en-US Dr. David Cox from Audubon Florida en-US and Pelican Island Audubon also spoke.en-US We recognize that domestic cats provide en-US many benefits to people, including companen-US-en-US ionship and comfort, Dr. Cox said. We en-US also recognize that free-ranging cats kill bilen-US -en-US lions of birds and small mammals in the en-US U.S. each year. Audubon supports responsien-US -en-US ble pet ownership, to keep domestic cats en-US indoors or controlled on a leash, and to en-US manage feral cat overpopulation by estaben-US-en-US lishing alternatives to feral cat colonies.en-US Cats are instinctive hunters, Dr. Cox en-US continued. They hunt to kill whether fed or en-US not. Outdoor domestic cats and feral and en-US stray cats prey upon native birds, small en-US mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Outen-US -en-US door domestic casts lead short, brutal lives, en-US exposed to many risks.en-US According to Pelican Island Audubon, en-US cats in Indian River County kill as many as a en-US million birds and up to eight million small en-US mammals in Indian River County annually.en-US We support efforts to educate and en-US encourage cat owners to keep cats indoors en-US or controlled on leashes when outdoors, and en-US to have their pets spayed or neutered, Dr. en-US Cox said. We support the humane reducen-US -en-US tion of feral cat colonies.en-US We support the passage and enforceen-US-en-US ment of local ordinances prohibiting estaben-US -en-US lishment of feral cat colonies and the release en-USof feral or unwanted cats outdoors. We en-US oppose ordinances that condone or legalize en-US the deliberate establishment of feral cat colen-US -en-US onies. Trap/neuter/re-abandon appears en-US advantageous to one species cats and en-US harmful to many dozens, perhaps hundreds en-US of other species. To protect our threatened en-US wildlife we must humanely remove domesen-US-en-US tic cats from the landscape.en-US There are humane alternatives to TNR en-US like increased adoption, widespread low en-US cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics, en-US Ms. Hawker concluded. In some parts of en-US the country there are enclosed cat sanctuaren-US -en-US ies where un-adoptable cats are safe.en-US What were talking about is prevention. en-US In the 60s and 70s people let their dogs en-US roam outside. Now they dont do that anyen-US-en-US more, and youve seen a reduction in canine en-US rabies. We want to see prevention, to teach en-US new behaviors, to value cats as indoor pets. We are an American Nail Studio. We dont just meet state regulations for sanitation, we exceed them. Our primary con cern is the health of our clients and the health of their nails. We use disposable files, and onetime use products. All metal implements are scrubbed, soaked in disinfectant and at the end of the day are placed in a pouch which goes into a high-heat sterilizer. Liners are used in our pedicure tubs. We have achieved the 5-Star-SafeSalon accreditation. Why did you open your business? I became increasingly frustrated with the cheap, fast and unsanitary work being done in discount salons. I wanted my clients to experience a relaxing, clean, friendly atmosphere with top notch services and treatments. What are your top-selling items/services? Pedicures and Polygel Nails. For those who have not done business with you, why should they? In keeping with the healthy side of beauty, our nail services are less abra sive to ones nails because we use products such as polygel rather than acrylic. For weak, splitting, peeling or damaged nails caused by excessive filing, drilling or improper applica tion and removal of an overlay, we offer restoration treatments. These treatments bring the nails back into a healthy condition and encourage strong growth. We carry a nail pol ish line that is organic and vegan. Pedicures go way beyond the regular soak, trim, and polish that is offered in discount salons. We have an Herbal Detox, and Ionic Detox Series that balances the bodys Ph drawing toxins out through the feet. Our Moroccan Indulgence incorporates Moroccan clay and minerals, as well as a paraffin alternative combining ingre dients of various essential oils and herbs. A callous eliminating treatment/pedicure is a favorite among both men and women. Those with diabetes, neuropathy and ingrown nails feel confident in our ability to assist them with careful and sterile pedicures.
