3 en-USof our Walking Tree team members is curen-US -en-US rently fighting breast cancer. Shes an amazen-US -en-US ing person with a huge heart. She recently en-US had surgery and was right back at work the en-US next week. Her dedication and positivity is en-US my fuel to raise as much money as I can.en-US In 2015, breast cancer impacted our lives en-US when my wife was diagnosed, said Andrew en-US Trilla of Indian River Medical Center, who en-US has raised $878. We found out she had trien-US -en-US ple negative stage 2b breast cancer. She was en-US diagnosed a second time in 2017 with triple en-US negative stage 1 breast cancer. She has been en-US in remission since September 2017. We en-US leaned on the American Cancer Society for en-US their support and services. My wife utilized en-US the Look Good Feel Better Program and en-US received a free wig. They also provided rides en-US to treatment through Road to Recovery and en-US recommended support groups in our area.en-US Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is en-US the most common cancer in women. en-US According to the ACS, about 268,670 new en-US cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagen-US -en-US nosed in 2018, up from 252,710 in 2017. en-US About 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ en-US (CIS) will be diagnosed in women. CIS is en-US non-invasive and is the earliest form of en-US breast cancer.en-US While breast cancer incidence rates are en-US highest in non-Hispanic white women, en-US according to the ACS, breast cancer death en-US rates are highest in African American en-US women.en-US I am an eight-year breast cancer survivor en-US and know firsthand what it is like to fight en-US this terrible disease, said Harold Schwartz, en-US who has raised $466. There is no admission charge.en-US Float Hope currently funds swimming lessons for 102 en-US children, starting at age six. With drowning being the leaden-US -en-US ing cause of death of Florida children, Float Hope targets en-US black, Hispanic, and economically-disadvantaged children en-US who traditionally never learn to swim.en-US Float Hope of Indian River County funds 100 percent of en-US the costs for these children to swim, and also pays for their en-US registration with the Treasure Coast Swim Club, the only en-US certified USA Swim Club in Vero Beach.en-US Each swimmer is also registered with Florida Swimming en-US and USA Swimming, to allow them to receive membership en-US benefits from the national governing body of swimming in en-US the United States.en-US One of the Float Hope coaches, Holly McClain, competed en-US at the University of Tampa and graduated from Florida en-US Atlantic University. Ms. McClain was a YMCA national en-US champion.en-US By registering the swimmers from the start with Treaen-US -en-US sure Coast Swim Club and also registering them with USA en-US Swimming, all team members are part of not only a local en-US swim club but the national organization for swimming, said en-US Coach McClain. USA swimming is what they become a en-US part of for all ages including high school, college swimming, en-US and even up to the Olympics. Affording all our swimmers en-US this opportunity, it does not take too long for them to en-US understand they are part of something bigger. My biggest en-US delight is how strong and quickly our swimmers gain self en-US confidence, which is the most important life skill kids en-US receive being part of the TCSC swim team.en-US Coach Scott Barlow has experience coaching for more en-US than 25 years. Coach Barlow competed at Eastern Michigan en-US University, and then graduated from Miami University of en-US Ohio.en-US Coach Barlow has produced five High School All Amerien-US -en-US can swimmers and a 2013 Florida high school two-time en-US state champion.en-US I believe the best proof of the future is past performance, en-US and TCSC swimmers have a profound sense of self-worth, en-US they treat others with respect, and get better grades, said en-US Coach Barlow. Our swimmers do it themselves. We just en-US provide the opportunity.en-US The first Float Hope swim meet drew 75 swimmers, en-US which went up to 80 for the second. Many of the children en-US have just learned how to swim within the past two years.en-US The Float Hope children start swimming after school and en-US during the summer. In high school, many join the swim en-US team. Many also go on to swim in college.en-US What was once a child with little hope becomes a discien-US-en-US plined competitive swimmer with realistic expectations of en-US succeeding in high school and college, said director Jeffrey en-US Powers.en-US The Gifford Youth Achievement Center and the Boys and en-US Girls Clubs of Indian River County partner with Float Hope, en-US providing logistics, sign-ups, and transportation.en-US Float Hope teaches swim classes at the North County en-US Aquatic Center, 9450 County Road 512, Sebastian, which is en-US the site of Fridays meet, and Gifford Recreational Center en-US Pool, 4895 43rd Ave, Vero Beach.en-US For more information or to donate, visit en-US www.floathopeen-US-en-US now.org.en-USYoung swimmers compete Friday at Sebastian poolen-USBy Mike Winikoffen-USmwinikoff@hometownnewsol.comen-USPinken-USFrom page 1

4 en-USNor did I go out looking to burn you. It is en-US just your bad luck that I stumbled across en-US your misadventures while working a job en-US around Fellsmere. Frankly, I am ready to en-US forget all about you and let you get on with en-US your life. And I am going to give you two en-US options that will accomplish that very thing. en-US Those two options are to either ignore this en-US letter, or simply pay me $8,900.en-US The letter goes on to say that if the recipien-US-en-US ent ignores it, the sender will take this evien-US -en-US dence and send it to your wife. ... I will also en-US send copies to her friends, family and to all en-US your nearest neighbors.en-US In the alternative, the letter says, the en-US recipient can pay $8,900 in Bitcoin, and he/en-US she gives a Receiving Bitcoin Address to en-US send the money. The letter includes detailed en-US instructions regarding how to send money en-US by Bitcoin.en-US Fellsmere Police Chief Keith Touchberry en-US said his office received a phone call Oct. 1 en-US from a resident who received the letter. The en-US letter was addressed to one of the residents en-US relatives who has never lived at the address en-US where the letter was sent, Chief Touchberry en-US said. The caller did not wish to make a en-US police report but wanted area residents to be en-US aware of the scam. The Federal Trade Comen-US -en-US mission is aware of the scam and posted en-US information on how citizens can respond to en-US the letter if they choose.en-US The FTC says that people who receive this en-US letter should immediately report it to local en-US police and the FBI.en-US This is a criminal extortion attempt to en-US separate people from their money, said en-US Cristina Miranda, Division of Consumer en-US and Business Education, FTC. Its enough en-US to send shivers down anyones spine, but en-US these chilling words are part of a new scam en-US targeting men.en-US The Aug. 21 FTC post was followed by en-US more than 30 comments of people around en-US the country saying they received the same or en-US similar letter.en-US Chief Touchberry told Hometown News en-US that he does not know of others in the area en-US who have received the same letter or who en-US fell for the scam.en-US This incident is the first that I have heard en-US of, said Chief Touchberry.en-US For more information about the Bitcoin en-US blackmail scam, visit en-US www.consumer.ftc.en-US gov/blog/2018/08/how-avoid-bitcoin-en-US blackmail-scam. When we say "Evangelien-US-en-US cals" support Trump we are only talking en-US about slightly more than half of the en-US Non-Hispanic White Evangelical voters in en-US this nation. The vast majority of Non-White en-US Evangelicals and a majority of Hispanic en-US Evangelicals, of all races, (Hispanics come in en-US all races) voted against Trump. Black Evanen-US-en-US gelicals voted against Trump three to one. en-US As true Christianity goes Trump left a lot to en-US be desired. en-US What's more, most of America's voters en-US voted against Trump which is why he lost en-US this nation's popular vote by 3 million votes. en-US We must remember, not all Christian en-US believe Pro-Life ends at birth, many of us en-US believe Pro-Life continues after birth and en-US anybody looking to end Pro-Life sustaining en-US healthcare instead of expanding it, the way en-US Trump and the Republicans are looking to en-US do, is definitely not truly Pro-Life, they're en-US lying to themselves. We didn't leave the en-US GOP, the GOP left us.en-USPopular vote vs. en-US Electoral Collegeen-USFive times in U.S. history the Electoral en-US College chose the president. The people en-US the popular vote was ignored. en-US Twice a presidential candidate that won en-US the popular vote winner but lost the Electoren-US -en-US al College vote won both popular and Elecen-US -en-US toral College votes in a later election. en-US (Andrew Jackson 1824 & 1828; Grover en-US Cleveland 1885 & 1893).en-US March 4, 1877 a Sunday, was the date that en-US Rutherford B. Hayes 19th president of the en-US United States, was to take the oath of office. en-US The election and a question of 20 electoral en-US votes created such divisiveness that outgoen-US -en-US ing President Grant feared insurrection so en-US Hayes oath of office was taken March 3, in en-US secret, in the Red Room of the White House. en-US He again took the oath on the East Portico en-US of the Capitol, in public, March 5. en-US We witnessed the Gore-Bush debacle and en-US are suffering the results of the Electoral Colen-US -en-US lege vote giving the election to Trump en-US despite Clinton's over 3 million popular vote en-US win. en-US Make this year the year to give the vote en-US back to the people. Abolish the Electoral en-US College.en-USBrightlineen-USI read with interest the article about en-US Brightline and not much community en-US response. I think the community has en-US responded quite emphatically that a train en-US going through the middle of Stuart 32 times en-US a day would not only be a disruption, but a en-US dangerous one at that. I did attend the meeten-US -en-US ing with a neighbor under the impression en-US we would get a chance to speak but after an en-US hour or more of listening to only "where a en-US station would go," we left. The issues of the en-US hospital being on the "wrong" side of the en-US tracks and the amount of times and speed of en-US the train going through downtown were not en-US discussed. Their representatives from en-US Orlando were there praising the train every en-US step of the way but not acknowledging that en-US the money that has been secured has been en-US done behind the scenes. en-US There were some people there in favor of en-US it. Brightline apparently feels that if they en-US offer a station, people will warm up to the en-US idea. That is NOT going to happen with en-US most of the residents. There is no reason en-US they cannot move the tracks to the west of en-US 95 where it will not have a direct effect on en-US our city, traffic, downtown, etc. The point en-US they were trying to make is that it would en-US bring more business to Stuart. At what cost en-US would this be to our downtown residents en-US and businesses? There is a school downen-US -en-US town that uses the Lyric Theatre for an en-US escape route if anything ever happened at en-US that school. Can you imagine children tryen-US -en-US ing to cross the tracks when or if this ever en-US happened? en-US There are so many reasons this is not a en-US good fit for our beautiful downtown. These en-US need to be vetted before they start dangling en-US a station in front of people to get them to en-US agree to it. If they really want input, they en-US should have a meeting to listen to the citien-US -en-US zens and what they have to say. en-US The effects of this decision will forever en-US change this city and needs more vetting. en-US When asked, after being asked twice, they en-US acknowledged residents would be responsien-US-en-US ble for the safety, security and responsibility en-US for accidents and funding for quiet zones. en-US This clearly needs more transparency.en-US Nothing has changed. This will decimate en-US our small city. People move here to get away en-US from all that noise, crowds and now Brighten-US -en-US line is bringing it right to our front door. en-US Anyone who agrees to this will not get my en-US vote in the future. Anyone who says it is a en-US "done deal" and there is nothing we can do en-US will not get my vote. We must fight to keep en-US this "the Most Beautiful CIty in the US." en-USPizzaen-USMy wife and i have traveled by car all over en-US North America. We've sampled every type en-US of food popular to that area. I have to say en-US that the pizza here in south Florida is not en-US very good. We have tried many small pizza en-US shops but have been disappointed. It comes en-US down to a matter of preference but I have en-US heard repeatedly the same opinion from en-US other people. When we do buy a delivered en-US pizza we get it from a national chain. It en-US seems like they use recipes from areas of our en-US country that taste the best.en-USLive clerks vs. abandoned, en-US overstuffed cartsen-USTo the ranter who stated "I go back into en-US the store, fill my cart to the brim with non-en-US food items and then leave it. At least one of en-US the few employees left in the store might get en-US some overtime pay for putting stuff back":en-US Please stop this passive-aggressive time en-US wasting abusive tactic. First, in order to get en-US overtime, a person must work a full 8 hour en-US day/40 hour week. Most, if not all, retailers en-US intentionally schedule the employees at less en-US than fulltime to avoid paying benefits. Just en-US ask a live clerk next time you check-out. en-US Second, finding an abandoned overstuffed en-US cart means nothing to the store manager en-US they may not even be notified. Want to en-US make a difference? Take the time to speak to en-US the store manager, or district management en-US or, even better, write (email) the corporate en-US headquarters with your direct complaint/en-US comment.en-US My guess is the reason you prefer a live en-US clerk is either your a creepy old man who en-US likes to 'flirt with' (harass) the live clerk or en-US you are a grumpy old woman who likes to en-US 'vent to' (verbally abuse) the live clerk. en-US Please consider getting therapy/treatment to en-US stop this passive-aggressive behavior. The en-US live clerks, your friends and family members en-US and the rest of normal human kind would en-US appreciate it. 11 en-USCommunities Connected for Kids is a en-US non-profit organization that contracts with en-US the state of Florida to provide child welfare en-US services, and to deliver the system of care in en-US Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie, and en-US Okeechobee counties.en-US Around the winter holidays, a big focus of en-US the organization is to provide new toys to en-US children in foster care. The Making Christen-US -en-US mas Bright program, in partnership with en-US Guardians for New Futures, is now in its en-US 18th year, and they are looking for new en-US sponsors. en-US Sponsors can be individuals, small or en-US large businesses, churches, academic or en-US social groups, families, or neighborhood en-US groups. All you have to do is collect new en-US toys.en-US CCK Director of Community Relations en-US Christina Kaiser started the gift-giving proen-US -en-US gram 18 years ago, when she worked with en-US the Florida Dept. of Children and Families.en-US We have had a lot more children come en-US into the system over the last few years, so en-US every year we need more sponsors, Ms. en-US Kaiser told Hometown News. We really en-US want to invite the community to join us in en-US this project.en-US The children who come into our care are en-US all children who have been abused, abanen-US -en-US doned, or neglected, said Ms. Kaiser. That en-US doesnt necessarily mean the child has been en-US removed from a home. There could be seren-US -en-US vices in the home, or maybe the child has en-US been removed from the home and placed en-US into a foster home or group care, or living en-US with an aunt or an uncle. The unifying charen-US -en-US acteristic is that there was some kind of en-US abuse, neglect, or abandonment that en-US brought them into the system.en-US There are several ways that the public can en-US participate in Making Christmas Bright.en-US There are two main ways people can be en-US sponsors, Ms. Kaiser said. The first is to en-US conduct a general drive. They might have en-US their employees, customers, neighbors, or en-US church members bring any kind of gift for en-US children ages 0-18. They collect them, then en-US we schedule a time when I come pick them en-US up to get them distributed to our kids.en-US The traditional way people participate is en-US through direct sponsorship. I get a list of en-US children, and each childs three wishes. I get en-US those from all of our case managers from all en-US four counties. I compile those lists into one en-US master list, and then I break that list up en-US among all our sponsors.en-US Some churches or businesses decide to en-US sponsor by, for example, taking on 20 chilen-US -en-US dren. I would give you a list of 20 children, en-US their first name, and the three things that en-US they want for Christmas. Then you or your en-US business or church coordinate your own toy en-US drive among your members or employees.en-US Some groups make angel ornaments to en-US hang on a tree, and then each person picks en-US an angel, gets the gift, and brings it back. All en-US gifts should be new and unwrapped.en-US We need to make sure the gifts are en-US age-appropriate, Ms. Kaiser said. Our fosen-US-en-US ter kids have a lot of sensitivities, and our en-US case managers make sure each kid gets an en-US appropriate gift.en-US Also, for this event, we make sure all the en-US gifts are new. This is the one time per year en-US where we insist on new toys, so they get new en-US toys at Christmas.en-US Despite the programs name, it is not limen-US -en-US ited to children in families that celebrate en-US Christmas. Ms. Kaiser said the program en-US seeks to bring joy to children of all different en-US backgrounds and beliefs.en-US Thats not difficult for us to navigate. en-US Our case managers work with these kids en-US and their families on a very personal, reguen-US -en-US lar basis, so they know if the child or family en-US celebrates a different holiday. The child will en-US still get a gift. Usually the case manager en-US gives the gift to the parent, so the parent can en-US surprise the children with them. Whatever en-US holiday the family celebrates, they will have en-US a gift to help them celebrate.en-US Making Christmas Bright aims to provide en-US gifts for about 1,100 children this year. More en-US than 60,000 gifts have been collected since en-US the program began in 1999. The average en-US wish list is about 15 children.en-US This year the program has more than 40 en-US sponsors already, but Ms. Kaiser says they en-US always need more. We get a lot of kids who en-US come into care between now and December, en-US so we want to make sure we have enough en-US gifts for them as well. We have a really good en-US success rate, but we always need every bit of en-US what we get. Thats why the general drives en-US are so important, where people arent shopen-US -en-US ping for a specific kid. Those toys often go en-US to the kids who came into the system after en-US we created the lists for specific kids.en-US Ive been doing this for a long time, and en-US it always surprises me how much more we en-US need. No matter how much we have, we en-US always need more. And, both here and en-US nationally, there has been an uptick in chilen-US -en-US dren needing care, in part because of en-US increased substance abuse like opioids.en-US What makes this program different from en-US a lot of other programs is that we come and en-US pick up from you. You dont have to figure en-US out how to get all your co-worker or congreen-US -en-US gants gifts collected and transported to us. I en-US arrange a time and come to you with a big en-USbox truck to pick everything up.en-US Ms. Kaiser brings all gifts to their service en-US center. The case managers gather the approen-US -en-US priate gifts, which they distribute during en-US their December visits to their children or to en-US the families, so they can play Santa Claus.en-US For more details, contact Christina Kaiser en-US at (772) 528-0362 or en-US Christina.Keiser@ccken-US-en-US ids.net.
