People can come meet pets availen-US -en-US able for adoption.en-US All the funds that were raising at this en-US event, and all the donations weve received en-US for this event, will go to support the Angel en-US Wings program. That covers adoption fees en-US for somebody who wants to adopt a pet but en-US doesnt have the funds. Adoption fees for en-US adult cats and dogs start at about $125, and en-US go up to almost $200 for some of the pupen-US -en-US pies and kittens. They are a little more en-US because of the shots and extra money that en-US HALO has invested in them.en-US Right now we have enough donations to en-US cover two and a half adoptions. Were trying en-US to raise enough to cover more adoptions.en-US Were going to have vendors and giveen-US -en-US aways, added Karen Riddle, Community en-US Relations Director. Some of the vendors will also en-US donate a portion of their sales to HALO. en-US Some of the vendors who would normally en-US charge to attend an event, like the ice cream en-US truck, are waiving their fees.en-US There will be crafters, jewelry, and art. en-US The Wabasso Middle School is starting a en-US business making homemade pet treats, and en-US they will be here, said Ms. Merriman.en-US Pet photographer Michael Jackson from en-US Los Angeles will be on-site with a mini-stuen-US-en-US dio set up for people to get photos of or with en-US their pets. en-US 4 en-USeducators and professionals who volunteer en-US to judge their projects, said Paula Golden, en-US President of the Broadcom Foundation. en-US The Top 300 are the best-of-the-best and en-US represent all science fair participants en-US throughout the country. It is especially en-US exciting to see more young women making en-US it to the Top 300 in this rigorous national en-US STEM competition that boasts a record en-US number of applicants this year.en-US This years semifinalists included more en-US females than males, with 152 girls (51 peren-US -en-US cent) and 145 boys (48 percent) selected. en-US The 300 were selected from a pool of 2,537 en-US applicants after being evaluated by a panel en-US of scientists, engineers and educators. Projen-US-en-US ects were judged on creativity and originalien-US -en-US ty, and the ability to apply STEM principles en-US to the real world.en-US The semifinalists represent the top 10 en-US percent of 6th, 7th and 8th grade projects en-US entered in science fairs around the country. en-US All received a gift package including a backen-US-en-US pack, an invention journal, and subscripen-US -en-US tions to Science News magazine and math en-US software.en-US From the 300 semifinalists, 30 were choen-US -en-US sen to go to the finals. Neither Indian River en-US County student made the finals but, as en-US school district spokesperson Cristen Maden-US-en-US dux told Hometown News, Top 300 is such en-US a huge accomplishment!en-US Cynthia Falardeau, Executive Director of en-US The Education Foundation of Indian River en-US County, said Each of these students got the en-US opportunity to apply through the Indian en-US River Regional Science & Engineering Fair. en-US The process of completing a Broadcom en-US Masters application is rigorous. We want to en-US thank all of our science fair sponsors for en-US encouraging Zachary and Lucy to apply. We en-US are very proud of Zachary and Lucy. We en-US know they have the power to change the en-US world.en-US The semifinalists came from all sorts of en-US schools: 59.7 percent from public schools, en-US 30.3 percent from private schools, 6.3 peren-US -en-US cent from charter schools, 3.3 percent from en-US home schools and 0.3 percent (one student) en-US from an online school.en-US Middle school is a critical time for all en-US students, said Maya Ajmera, President of en-US the Society for Science and the Public, one en-US of the sponsoring organizations. It is a time en-US when they are beginning to explore all posen-US -en-US sibilities in front of them as they grow into en-US adulthood. The Broadcom Masters is so en-US important because we are engaging these en-US young people and helping to cultivate their en-US interest in science, technology, engineering en-US and math.en-US Some of the other winning projects en-US addressed minimizing food waste using an en-US app; testing gene mutations that could cause en-US cystic fibrosis; enhancing search and rescue en-US efforts using antenna-based wireless signals; en-US more effective solar panel design; testing the en-US effect of melatonin on breast cancer growth; en-US and developing a more efficient battery. When they finally got tough 6 years en-US ago, Gov. Scott and the Repubs in control all en-US stonewalled, and said these onerous reguen-US -en-US lations would be too hard on FL businesses. en-US Gov. Scott slashed the budgets of all 5 of en-US FLs water management districts, by 40 peren-US -en-US cent. Scientists and engineers were laid off; en-US all land buying projects seem to have en-US stopped. Then FLs Environmental Commisen-US -en-US sion, whose board is appointed by Governor en-US Scott, weakened criteria for 23 toxic chemien-US -en-US cals in FL waterways, allowing higher levels en-US of benzene, for instance.en-USLive clerks vs. machinesen-USA reader lamented the limited number of en-US live clerks vs. scan checkout options and his/en-US her preference for live clerks. I heartily en-US endorse those sentiments and clerks en-US replaced by machines certainly felt the same en-US way. Its a safe bet that overworked real peoen-US-en-US ple who are still employed are earning minien-US-en-US mum wage and stay because they dont have en-US a choice. Florida minimum wage is among en-US the lowest, if not the lowest in the nation.en-US Big corp billionaires tempt consumers en-US with low prices and the ease of ordering. en-US The downside is: lost jobs and lost privacy. en-US Every time you access the Internet for inforen-US -en-US mation and order via the internet you are en-US tracked and your information can be used en-US for more than marketing purposes. Apps en-US are required in some stores for sale items. en-US No app you pay regular price. The Interen-US -en-US net is largely responsible for the creation of en-US this go along to get along society.en-US This morning this headline caught my en-US attention: Should cashless retail stores be en-US banned? Amazon and Walmart are fighting en-US a New Jersey bill that would require stores to en-US accept cash, i.e., if corporations get their en-US way all purchases would have to be made via en-US plastic or app or from some other technical en-US device. Again, technology taking away conen-US-en-US sumer choice and rights.en-US Would Hometown News consider doing en-US a survey about how locals feel about this? en-US Businesses would benefit from the informaen-US-en-US tion which comes directly from consumers, en-US who should be the ones determining how en-US they want to do business.en-USAlso prefers live clerksen-USI happen to agree. People need to stop en-US and realize you don't get a discount for not en-US only doing your own shopping, but checken-US -en-US ing yourself out and bagging your items and en-US taking them to your car.en-US You're paying as much, if not more, and en-US there are less employees. The only place en-US making money off this scam is the store.en-US I have gotten into the habit now if there en-US are only one or two lanes open with a real en-US person and the lines are long, I go back into en-US the store, fill my cart to the brim with non-en-US food items and then leave it.en-US At least one of the few employees left in en-US the store might get some overtime pay for en-US putting the stuff back. If I want to self check, en-US I will stay home, save my gas and shop on en-US Amazon. At least they deliver.en-US'Give bicyclists more room'en-USWhere would you propose bicycle riders en-US ride? On the sidewalks that are meant for en-US pedestrians?en-US It sounds to me you are one of the people en-US who dont move over and give a bicycle rider en-US proper clearance. The only time I see a bicyen-US -en-US cle in the middle of the road is usually when en-US the rider is crossing a road, or going around en-US an obstacle, or in a neighborhood on a back en-US street. This is where you find the neighboren-US -en-US hood children riding who delight in racing en-US and riding in circles and generally doing en-US innocent kid stuff.en-US Bicycles are subject to the same rules as en-US motor vehicles. Just like motor vehicle operen-US -en-US ators, you will find some breaking the law, en-US riding against traffic. This is a danger to all en-US because most cars, when pulling out of a en-US driveway or into an intersection, are not en-US looking for bicycles riding on the wrong en-US side of the road, and just not paying attenen-US -en-US tion.en-US They should be ticketed as should a en-US motorist. Maybe we need more bicycle rider en-US education, but how in the world would en-US requiring a bicycle to be registered solve any en-US of these issues? How about motorists and en-US bicyclists alike use more of what seems to be en-US missing in large amounts these days comen-US -en-US mon sense and courtesy?en-US As it stands, the law is give bicyclists three en-US feet of clearance. That means stay three feet en-US off of the bicycle lane, not drive next to or en-US on the line. Give more than three feet when en-US driving highway speeds.en-USDemocratic socialism en-USoften misunderstooden-USA democratic socialist is not Marxist en-US socialist or communist.en-US A democratic socialist is one who seeks to en-US restrain the self-destructive excess of capien-US -en-US talism and channel the government's use of en-US our tax money into creating opportunities en-US for everyone.en-US Democratic socialists believe that the en-US economy and society should be run demoen-US -en-US cratically, to meet public needs not to make en-US profits for a few.en-US If you're tired of the rich getting richer, en-US consider socialism.en-US13 State Constitution en-US amendmentsen-USThe first two times I saw the amendments en-US published in a local newspaper, I read en-US through the article twice once increduen-US-en-US lously, the second more studiously and took en-US notes to try to understand what was being en-US proposed to no avail. There is no underen-US -en-US standing or reasoning behind these proposen-US -en-US als presented as they are, other than to conen-US -en-US fuse, obfuscate, and trick voters into voting en-US for some things / rules no one wants, and no en-US legislator wants to be blamed for. This is an en-US example of government at its worst.en-US I STRONGLY urge every voter to vote en-US NO on all 13 items. None of these need to en-US be elevated to the level of incorporation into en-US the states constitution, but should be en-US addressed individually by the legislature, en-US where each elected official must take a puben-US -en-US lic stand for or against each item. Vote NO en-US to the process which only serves to benefit, en-US via power and/or money, to a few, and takes en-US rights / power away from the people of the en-US state of Florida. It not only offers the en-US opportunity for more people to come, as en-US many of the performances at the Anne en-US Morton were selling out, but it was done en-US primarily to give the kids the experience of en-US performing on the same stage as the profesen-US-en-US sional actors. We are a teaching facility after en-US all. We did the kids shows on the Stark this en-US summer and they really loved the experien-US -en-US ence.en-US The Cat in the Hat is a 1957 childrens en-US book written and illustrated by Theodor en-US Geisel under the pen name Dr. Seuss. Mr. en-US Geisel wrote the book as part of a debate on en-US the usefulness of traditional childrens en-US books like Dick and Jane. Mr. Geisel was en-US challenged to come up with something en-US more entertaining that would hold the en-US attention of children and make them want en-US to read.en-US Part of the challenge was to also come up en-US with characters who were not abnormally en-US courteous and unnaturally clean. Mr. Geisen-US -en-US el sought to create children who behave naten-US -en-US urally, and sometimes misbehave.en-US Mr. Geisel was given a list of words that en-US the book should teach children, and he en-US decided to base his story on the first two en-US words on the list that rhymed, cat and en-US hat.en-US The story involves a cat who shows up on en-US a rainy day to entertain young Sally and her en-US brother. Along with his two companions, en-US Thing One and Thing Two, the cat wrecks en-US the house and then works to clean it up en-US before Sallys mother returns home.en-US The cast features four Riverside Theatre en-US apprentices alongside two local children. en-US Theo Blumstein plays the cat, Ben Lundy is en-US Thing One, Sofia Tosches is Thing Two, Lily en-US Warner is the fish, Chantal Werner plays en-US Sally, and David Callahan plays Sallys en-US brother. en-US We are pleased to be offering our fun-en-US filled take on such a classic book, said en-US director Kevin Quillinan. Most everybody en-US has experienced this book as a child, an en-US adult reading it to a child, or both, so we en-US know this show will warm the hearts and en-US delight the imaginations of our audiences. en-US This will be the perfect first show for the en-US next generation of theatre lovers to experien-US-en-US ence.en-US The creative team includes Emily Perry en-US (scenic design), Anna Hillbery (costume en-US design), Noah Parsons (lighting design), en-US Andrew Stroud (sound design), Anna Cable en-US (props design) and Keelin Higgins (stage en-US manager).en-US Riverside Theatre is located at 3250 Riven-US-en-US erside Park Drive, Vero Beach.en-US Performances are Oct. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m., en-US and Oct. 6 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 en-US and can purchased by calling the Riverside en-US Box Office at (772) 231-6990 or online at en-US Out en-GB en-GB&en-GB en-GBabout en-USSeeen-US en-US OUTen-US page 10en-US Seeen-US en-US SCOPESen-US, page 10en-USDining en-US &en-US Entertainmenten-USFRIDAY, SEPT. 28, 2018 en-US SEBASTIANen-US WWW.HOMETOWNNEWSIRC.COM PAGE 9 en-USBy Mike
