en-US 3 en-USSEBASTIAN Dr. Harold Brooks of en-US Sebastian Dental Spa is so concerned with en-US the high cost of dental care, hell even point en-US you to a less expensive alternative to save en-US you money.en-US When speaking with Dr. Brooks about my en-US own dental issues recently, I expected him en-US to suggest the most expensive options and en-US then work down from there. To the conen-US -en-US trary, he started by discussing the least en-US expensive options.en-US I cant believe how much people pay for en-US dentistry, Dr. Brooks said. But if you dont en-US keep the mouth in good shape and take care en-US of things, its going to cost you more and en-US more over time. Thats why wellness is so en-US important.en-US There in a nutshell is my takeaway from en-US talking with Dr. Brooks: reduce the enoren-US -en-US mous cost of dental care by focusing on en-US maintaining a healthy mouth all the time.en-US In the Air Force in the 1970s, Dr. Brooks en-US became a periodontal specialist, an expert en-US in gum disease. He spent most of his early en-US career focused on gum surgeries, until he en-US concluded that hed rather do more to preen-US -en-US vent the need for surgery by helping patients en-US avoid gum disease. The key to that is a clean, en-US bacteria-free mouth.en-US If you just get rid of the infected tissue en-US but dont kill the bacteria, they come back en-US and infect the tissue again, no matter how en-US much the patient en-US flossed or en-US brushed, Dr. en-US Brooks en-US explained. Im a en-US big proponent of en-US getting rid of the en-US bacteria. I like en-US the Water Pik, en-US its better than en-US flossing if you en-US have gum disen-US -en-US ease. I have my en-US patients put any en-US non-alcohol en-US mouthwash they like in the Water Pik. Alcoen-US -en-US hol does not kill a lot of the bacteria. It only en-US kills the easy ones. We want to kill the bad en-US ones. You have to get them off your tongue en-US too.en-US Bacteria from the mouth can cause heart en-US disease, infections in joints, some cancers, en-US stillborn babies, and Alzheimers. Bacteria en-US from dogs mouths can be deadly, as two en-US people in Wisconsin found out last month.en-US In line with his goal of saving patients en-US money while achieving the healthiest en-US mouth, Dr. Brooks is a big proponent of en-US Hydrogen Peroxide.en-US For gum disease, I have almost everyone en-US use Hydrogen Peroxide. Gum surgery is en-US very expensive. Hydrogen Peroxide is very en-US cheap. Nothing kills bacteria better than en-US Hydrogen Peroxide, and nobody is allergic en-US to it. Unlike alcohol-based mouthwash, en-US Hydrogen Peroxide kills all bacteria, and en-US kills all viruses. Hydrogen Peroxide is great en-US for killing bacteria that causes gum disease en-US and tooth decay. There is no good bacteria en-US in the mouth.en-US Dr. Brooks recommends the three peren-US -en-US cent Hydrogen Peroxide that you can buy in en-US a store, not the 30 percent commercial en-US Hydrogen Peroxide, which he said is too en-US strong.en-US We have a tool called an Air Flosser by en-US Braun that you use with Hydrogen Peroxide. en-US Putting Hydrogen Peroxide in the Water Pik en-US dilutes it too much, so use a capful of any en-US non-alcohol mouthwash in the Water Pik, en-US and Hydrogen Peroxide if you use the Air en-US Flosser.en-US A small number of people have sensitivien-US -en-US ty after long use of Hydrogen Peroxide, en-US where the gums become red instead of a en-US beautiful pink-white. In those cases we take en-US them off Hydrogen Peroxide and put them en-US on something like ACT.en-US We also have little trays that force the en-US Hydrogen Peroxide into the pockets, which en-US we only use on people who have a really bad en-US bacteria problem. It keeps the bacteria low. en-US All this wellness and cleanliness helps avoid en-US surgery. We want good, healthy tissue.en-US Another tip Dr. Brooks offers to save en-US money is to understand and maximize your en-US insurance benefits. If you do have any en-US insurance at all, make sure to use it to the en-US maximum for that particular year. And en-US dont be afraid to ask if the dental practice en-US can help you manage the costs.en-US Dentists can sometimes cut the cost, and en-US I can spread the cost over a year. And someen-US -en-US times we can figure out just what is most en-US necessary, and leave the rest alone. But the en-US trouble with doing just the worst is that all en-US of a sudden the others that werent so bad en-US become worse the next year, and you never en-US get ahead.en-US I also am not shy about telling people to en-US consider less expensive options like a comen-US -en-US munity health clinic. Im busy enough that I en-US dont need to convince everyone to come to en-US me.en-US Consistent with his belief in low cost, safe en-US health care, Dr. Brooks is a proponent of en-US marijuana. He speaks passionately and en-US knowledgably about many potential health en-US benefits from marijuana, including dental en-US care.en-US Marijuana has been used forever, since en-US biblical times, Dr. Brooks said. Its been en-US around for ages, and is very safe. Tens of en-USthousands of people die from the use of opien-US-en-US oids and alcohol.en-US Dr. Brooks says marijuana could relieve en-US both the anxiety many people have regarden-US -en-US ing dental work, and the pain.en-US Dentists should be allowed to give marien-US-en-US juana to patients. Many drug prescriptions en-US are given by dentists for toothaches and en-US during extractions. Dentists give out a lot of en-US prescriptions for opiates. Five percent of en-US people get addicted after only three pills. rrfrrfrfrr ntbft nntbtn AFFORDABLE NON-LAWYER SOLUTIONS, INC.ftfrt 2016 2016 C H O I C E R E A D E R S 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S Heavy Duty Welded Deck Heavy Duty Fabricated Frame MOORE MOTORS 772-569-8220 5135 US HWY 1, VERO BEACH Parts & Service For Everything We Sell Patented Automatic Park Brake System Comes with a 3 year factory warrantyAuthorized Dealer Zero Turn, Zero Down, Zero % Interest 2017 2017 C H O I C E R E A D E R S Starting at $2899 Sebastian Dental Spa wants you to improve en-USoral health while saving moneyen-USBy Mike Dr. Brooks en-USSeeen-US en-US DENTALen-US, page 5

en-US 4 en-USVERO BEACH Banned Books Week en-US is Sept. 23-29. The American Library en-US Association-sponsored event brings en-US together librarians, booksellers, publishen-US-en-US ers, journalists, teachers, and readers to en-US promote the freedom to read and express en-US unpopular or non-mainstream ideas.en-US We celebrate Banned Books Week en-US because it is a necessity, Hollie McDouen-US -en-US gall, Branch Manager of the Indian River en-US County Library System Brackett Library en-US at Indian River State College told Homeen-US -en-US town News. It highlights the frequent en-US challenges and bans books still face. We en-US celebrate the freedom to read. Informaen-US -en-US tion hasnt always been free. Everybody en-US has a right to read any of the stories or en-US ideas they want.en-US The theme for 2018 with ALA is Banen-US-en-US ning Books Silences Stories, added IRSC en-US Reference Librarian Angie NeelySardon. en-US The focus is on raising awareness about en-US censorship and how that can silence or en-US marginalize voices. Book bans decrease en-US the number of voices.en-US Banned Books Week was launched in en-US the 1980s, after a Supreme Court case said en-US school officials cant ban books from en-US libraries simply because of their content. en-US The books libraries promote during the en-US week are all books that have been banned en-US or restricted by schools and libraries en-US across the country.en-US Every year the ALA publishes the top en-US 10 challenged books, said Ms. McDouen-US-en-US gall. In 2017, most of those were new en-US childrens or young adults books. The en-US ALA keeps stats on who challenges books en-US and where the most challenges come en-US from. The ALA says 56 percent of chalen-US -en-US lenges come at public libraries.en-US Bans usually start with parents, not en-US government officials or entities. Conen-US -en-US cerned parents bring up that they dont en-US feel comfortable with that particular book en-US in their school or public libraries, said en-US Ms. NeelySardon.en-US Challenged books of 2017 included en-US those with content concerning LGBT and en-US gender identity issues, police brutality en-US and Black Lives Matter.en-US When someone challenges a book, it en-US almost makes us want to get that book for en-US the library even more, said Ms. McDouen-US-en-US gall. If someone challenges a book, it en-US makes you want to read it more, to see en-US why it was such a hot topic.en-US Its usually a pretty popular book, said en-US Ms. Neely-Sardon. Harry Potter and en-US Charlottes Web were challenged. Lots of en-US the books are very popular, even classics en-US we read in school that are still very much en-US a part of our literary canon have been en-US challenged or banned at some point. It is en-US so important to our democracy, to being a en-US well-rounded and informed person, to get en-US a variety of views and voices.en-US Book challenges have risen in recent en-US years. In 2017, the ALA Office for Intelen-US -en-US lectual Freedom tracked 354 challenges to en-US library, school and university materials, en-US up from 323 in 2016 and 275 in 2015.en-US In 2017, the Top 10 Most Challenged en-US Books were: Thirteen Reasons Why by en-US Jay Asher, banned in multiple school disen-US -en-US tricts because it discusses suicide; The en-US Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time en-US Indian by Sherman Alexie, for discussion en-US of poverty, alcoholism, and sexuality; en-US Drama by Raina Telgemeier, for includen-US -en-US ing LGBT characters; The Kite Runner en-US by Khaled Hosseini, banned because it en-US includes sexual violence and was thought en-US to lead to terrorism and promote en-US Islam; George by Alex Gino, because it en-US includes a transgender child; Sex is a en-US Funny Word by Cory Silverberg and en-US Fiona Smyth, because it addresses sex en-US education for children; To Kill a Mocken-US -en-US ingbird by Harper Lee, a Pulitzer en-US Prize-winning novel challenged and en-US banned because of violence and use of en-US racial language; The Hate U Give by en-US Angie Thomas, because it was considered en-US pervasively vulgar and because of drug en-US use, profanity, and offensive language; en-US And Tango Makes Three by Peter Paren-US -en-US nell, Justin Richardson, and Henry Cole, en-US because it features a same-sex relationen-US-en-US ship; and I Am Jazz by Jessica Herthel, en-US Jazz Jennings, and Shelagh McNicholas, en-US because it addresses gender identity.en-US On a positive note, Ms. McDougall said en-US that at Brackett Library, we have never en-US had anyone challenge a book.en-US The Brackett Library has set up a disen-US -en-US play highlighting banned books, and they en-US are encouraging people to take a picture en-US of themselves (so it looks like youre in jail en-US holding a banned book you were caught en-US reading, like a mug shot) and share that en-US on social media. Library staff are doing en-US the same to encourage participation.en-US The library is also participating in the en-US Great American Read, which includes 40 en-US banned or challenged books. Readers can en-US pick up a book bingo card at the library.en-US Other Banned Books Week events: en-USSept. 25 at 5 p.m.: A viewing of the film en-US The Dead, the movie based on the book en-US Dubliners by James Joyce.en-US Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.: Make your own en-US Banned Books Theme tote bag. en-US 5 en-USA lot of people are anxious about dental en-US work. Instead of giving valium for that, we en-US should be able to give a prescription for en-US marijuana. It is much better than valium. en-US With opiates, you need more each time. en-US With marijuana, the amount that is good for en-US you basically stays the amount thats good en-US for you, forever. Its great for sleeping, and en-US for making people relax. And its great for en-US pain.en-US Dr. Brooks strongly believes that Florida en-US should allow more uses of marijuana, espeen-US -en-US cially medical uses. Even though its great en-US for anxiety and dental pain, Im not allowed en-US to write those prescriptions. I have invested en-US in marijuana companies, but Im not en-US allowed to prescribe it. en-US Sebastian Dental Spa has a warm, famien-US -en-US ly-oriented atmosphere, in part because en-US much of the staff is family of Dr. Brooks.en-US Both of my sisters work with me, Dr. en-US Brooks said. One is a hygienist. My niece is en-US a hygienist, and my lab technician is my en-US hygienists husband. Most of them have en-US been working with me for years.en-US And everybody loves my new associate, en-US Dr. Latoya Joseph. Tourists are our bread and en-US butter, we need them. en-US Separating fact from truth these days with en-US all the advertisements and flyers is getting en-US more difficult. To really understand where en-US your representatives lie, you must do some en-US homework and find out how they have en-US voted in the past on issues that matter to en-US you. My en-US computer is frozen!'en-USWen-USindows (or any operating system) en-US can get overwhelmed from time en-US to time. Im not saying that en-US Windows can be overwhelming from time en-US to time it can, but sometimes Windows en-US just stops functioning and you cant seem to en-US do anything. en-US What people dont realize is just how en-US much is going on in the background at any en-US given time. Every part of the computer en-US from the keyboard to the mouse to the en-US monitor has a little program running in the en-US background that is in charge of how that en-US particular part functions and they all have en-US to run together harmoniously. And Im not en-US talking about a few little programs or en-US drivers, there are literally dozens of things en-US going on in the background at any given en-US second and sometimes Windows can get en-US overwhelmed. Frankly, after looking at en-US what is going on in the background at any en-US given moment, Im surprised that computen-US -en-US ers even run at all without crashing after en-US five minutes of up time. Its astounding.en-US I always have to smile inside when ever I en-US hear anyone say I wasnt even doing en-US anything and it just locked up! OK, sure, en-US you werent doing anything, thats fine but en-US understand that even if you are not moving en-US the mouse or typing anything, the computen-US -en-US er is still as busy as a one armed paper en-US hanger. Consider this, even if you are just en-US sitting there, hands completely off the en-US mouse and keyboard, the computer is en-US constantly looking at the keyboard and en-US mouse for any change. Its also re painting en-US whatevers on the screen 60 to 70 times per en-US second, checking to see if its time to start en-US the screen saver, listening to network en-US connections for incoming calls and more. en-US And thats not even considering the en-US hundreds of other things it has to do just to en-US keep the desktop alive and stable. Thats en-US why Windows can sometimes become en-US overwhelmed and freeze up. The question en-US is what to do about it when it happens?en-US Lets say you are surfing the Internet and en-US you click a link, the page loads and you en-US start reading. You get to the bottom of the en-US page and go to click somewhere else but the en-US pointer is just an hourglass (or spinning en-US circle) and you cant click anything. What en-US do you do then? Well, the first thing is dont en-US panic! Its most likely not the end of the en-US world and usually doesnt mean that your en-US computer is messed up. It usually means en-US that Windows got bogged down someen-US -en-US where and, if it doesnt recover on its own en-US after a couple of minutes, maybe needs a en-US little nudge to get it back on track. I en-US usually try to get the computer's attention en-US back by trying a couple different keyboard en-US commands; Ill hit the ESC key to try to en-US divert the machine's attention from en-US whatever its stuck on. en-US Sometimes this all it takes and someen-US -en-US times not if hitting escape key doesnt get en-US a response then I usually try the three en-US finger salute. With one finger, press and en-US hold the CTRL button, then with another en-US finger press and hold ALT and with a en-US third, press DELETE. Its important to be en-US pressing all three buttons at once as en-US pressing them and letting go will do en-US nothing. Once you press ctrl, alt, delete, a en-US Windows Security screen should pop up en-US that gives you the options to Lock Computen-US -en-US er, Log Off, Shutdown, Change the en-US password, open the Task Manager or en-US Cancel (the list will vary depending on the en-US version of Windows). en-US Click the Task Manager button and make en-US sure the Applications Tab is highlighted en-US and in front. On the Processes page you en-US should see your web browser listed (or en-US whatever program you were running when en-US you lost control) often with a comment of en-US Not Responding. Click it so it becomes en-US highlighted and then click End Task en-US button at the bottom of the task manager. en-US After a moment a message should pop up en-US asking if you want to wait for the program en-US or end the task. Click the End Task button en-US and your browser should close and give en-US control back to your mouse.en-US But what if that doesnt work? What if en-US hitting escape and control + alt + delete do en-US nothing? Well, that happens from time to en-US time and about the only way to get around en-US it is to reboot the machine just press and en-US hold the power button until the computer en-US shuts down, wait ten to twenty seconds and en-US turn it back on. After the machine restarts en-US things should be back to normal and you en-US should have control of your mouse again. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers.
