In Sebastian, the answer is A Kitchen en-US Of Her Own, a new culinary boutique en-US opening soon.en-US Shari Pierce is a professional artist with a en-US passion for working to stop violence against en-US women. Since 2007, she has had exhibitions en-US all over the world regarding violence to en-US women.en-US One day it dawned on me that not everyen-US -en-US one understands or has access to art, but en-US food is the way to the heart. It crosses all en-US gender, cultural, social and economic en-US boundaries, Ms. Pierce told Hometown en-US News. It is a basic necessity and a true pleaen-US-en-US sure that all humanity shares in common. So en-US I had the idea to turn my art studio into a en-US kitchen.en-US A Kitchen Of Her Own, which Ms. Pierce en-US calls AKOHO for short, will be a takeout en-US bakery/coffee shop. Most important, it will en-US be a gathering place and information en-US resource devoted to Ms. Pierces passion for en-US empowering women.en-US AKOHO is a fully operational kitchen en-US that will function as a meeting place, worken-US -en-US shop and creative space to raise awareness en-US and help eliminate violence against women en-US and girls in our community. From my expeen-US-en-US rience of working with victims of violence, en-US women want to help other women and tell en-US their stories but often they do not have the en-US strength to do it alone or the space to do so. en-US The kitchen will support itself by selling en-US baked goods to the public, caterings and en-US fundraisers.en-US AKOHO will serve coffee, croissants, en-US homemade pastries, quiche, fresh juices, en-US waffles, pies and desserts, paninis, and salen-US-en-US ads. The menu will be seasonal and rotate en-US with a few staples. Ms. Pierce will also offer en-US catering and personal cooking/meal planen-US -en-US ning for private clients. en-US My cooking and baking background is en-US inspired by 15 years of living in Germany en-US with a love for the Mediterranean kitchen.en-US Its a place to raise awareness about vioen-US -en-US lence against women. Its a place for people en-US to come and get resources or just be a voice en-US in the community. And I will have fresh en-US juices, pastries, coffee, and a lot of gourmet en-US items Ive come to like in Europe that are en-US hard to find here.en-US The name comes from a Virginia Woolf en-US quote: What a woman needs is a room of en-US her own to create.en-US So much of what happens in the home, en-US both positive and negative, revolves around en-US the kitchen and food, and how you interact en-US with your family, Ms. Pierce said. I thought en-US it was a perfect name for what I want to do, en-US to empower and encourage. I want it to be en-US both a non-threatening place for people to en-US come for information, and also some great en-US pastries and fresh food.en-US Conceptually, she thought it would be en-US perfect to have AKOHO right next to Pauls en-US Guns, whose owner Paul Trefzer she en-US describes as incredibly supportive of her en-US efforts.en-US I was here visiting my mother, and I hapen-US -en-US pened to meet Paul and we became good en-US friends. Paul has been a great supporter of en-US this project. Financially, it couldnt have en-US happened without his help. He is working en-US hard to eliminate violence against women in en-US the community so its actually a great fit.en-US Another person who helped Ms. Pierce en-US refine and improve her concept is Mindi en-US Fetterman, founder of The Inner Truth en-US Project in Port St. Lucie.en-US The Inner Truth Project is a nonprofit en-US that offers services to survivors of sexual en-US violence, allowing them to share their expeen-US-en-US riences in a safe environment. The Inner en-US Truth Project is committed to eliminating en-US the shame and secrecy of sexual abuse, vioen-US -en-US lence or rape.en-US When I first started the project, one en-US organization recommended I contact Mindi en-US Fetterman. I called Mindi and told her my en-US idea. She said the one thing we dont have in en-US our center that we always wanted to have a en-US kitchen where we could all cook together, en-US and sit down and have meals together. en-US When she said that it was a big confirmation en-US of my idea. I will be working hard to raise en-US funds for her center, and hope that she and en-US the women she works with will be coming en-US here and well have dinners together.en-US At first, Ms. Pierce will do all the baking. en-US Once she gets all the right resources and en-US licenses in place, she hopes to be able to en-US allow the community to use the kitchen.en-US I figured I could support this space by en-US serving the things that I like to make, gouren-US -en-US met cakes and pastries, and people could en-US come here. Eventually I hope to use the en-US space and the kitchen as a tool to reach out en-US to the community. A lot of people like to do en-US things like bake cookies for the troops, and I en-US envision this as a place where they can come en-US and do those things together.en-US Im an artist with a cooking addiction, so en-US for me, turning my studio into a kitchen is en-US an art project itself, a performance installaen-US -en-US tion. Over time, because of my connections en-US in the art world, I will be bringing different en-US artists from around the world that are doing en-US social projects.en-US AKOHO can be reached at 772-571-5880. en-USIt is located at 9090 North US Highway 1 en-US Wabasso/Sebastian next to Pauls Guns and en-US Rock City Gardens.en-US For more information about Shari Pierce en-US and her artwork, visit en-US Shari Pierce en-USsees her new en-US A Kitchen Of en-US Her Own as a en-US merger of en-US art, cooking, en-US and advocaen-US -en-US cy for en-US women.en-USStaff photo by en-US Mike Winikoffen-USArtist opens kitchen en-US to empower womenen-USBy Mike

I en-US sat down and read it. I want to extend my en-US appreciation to Donald Rodrigue for his en-US article on charter school issue, the election, en-US and for offering the board vacancies. Well en-US written.en-USOne-eyed drivingen-USWell, there is one thing that drunk drivers en-US do that texting drivers don't bother to do. en-US They keep at least one eye on the road at all en-US times.en-USGratefulen-USWhile in a convenience store on Septemen-US -en-US ber first, I was trying to operate a coffee en-US machine and my old cane kept slipping and en-US landing on the floor. A kind gentleman with en-US a big smile picked it up for me. I explained en-US that the troublesome cane once had a wrist en-US band that had long since worn off and I en-US hadn't found a lasting solution. "Well, I en-US won't be needing mine, soon. Why don't I en-US bring it in from my car and trade for yours?"en-US Before I could get over my surprise, he en-US returned with a brand-new cane with a en-US well-padded handle and a very sturdy wrist en-US band. This is the sort of kindness we need to en-US pass on. Whether it's a smile where you see a en-US frown, a helping hand, or the kind of activen-US -en-US ism that makes this world a better place, en-US we'll all be better off for the effort.en-US Thank you, kind sir. I've already paid it en-US forward.en-USEnforce littering lawsen-USThe trash and cigarette butts being left on en-US our beaches and roadways is really unbearen-US -en-US able. There are laws on the books regarding en-US littering, I wish they were enforced. I think en-US some of our tax money would be well spent en-US on some police and beach safety personnel en-US whose job is, while not completely specific en-US to, focused on littering.en-US It is all too common to see a smoker casuen-US -en-US ally toss a butt on the ground or stick it in en-US the sand on the beach. Ugggh. You only en-US need to have a roving beach patrol stop en-US when they see someone smoking on the en-US beach. The clouds of smoke are easy to spot. en-US When the person is done with their cigaen-US-en-US rette, usually in a minute or so, observe what en-US they do with the butt. If it goes in an ashtray en-US or empty bottle or pocket, great! If it goes on en-US the beach, issue a ticket.en-US The revenue collected from this would en-US more than pay the wages of police and beach en-US safety and keep the beaches and roadways en-US cleaner. Could be a win, win, no?en-USCat owners called outen-USI am an animal lover and would never en-US hurt any. My fondness is for dogs and wonen-US -en-US der why cats do not have the same rules, en-US such as staying on their owner's property, en-US walking on a leash, etc. It is not in the anien-US-en-US mal's best interest to be roaming at any time en-US but especially at night. If you do not want en-US the cat in your house why do you have one?en-US I am tired of cats urinating on my house en-US especially the front door, chasing and killing en-US small animals such as birds, doves, squirrels, en-US lizards, etc. I love watching small animals, en-US all in my back yard, and my dog has never en-US chased any of them because they are not en-US never out there at the same time.en-US So, please cat owners think of all the other en-US small animals that want to live and have fun en-US in a yard.en-USNo left turnen-USTwice today I witnessed vehicles coming en-US out of the plaza on the NE corner of Monteen-US -en-US rey and US #1 onto Monterey going West en-US and causing obstructions to the flow of trafen-US-en-US fic. The first vehicle was an A/C van that en-US blocked the traffic until everyone stopped to en-US let him make the illegal left hand turn. The en-US second vehicle (which surprised me very en-US much) was a Martin County Sheriff vehicle en-US who also impeded the flow of traffic just to en-US enable him to make an illegal left hand turn en-US and get into the lane he needed so that he en-US could return to the Sheriff's department en-US further west on Monterey (there was no en-US urgency, no flashing lights, just didn't want en-US to go to the proper exit and make the proper en-US turn to return to the Sheriff's department).en-US Because of this plaza having traffic turnen-US-en-US ing from US #1 onto Monterey going East, en-US the sign at the exit near Pei Wei says "NO en-US LEFT TURN" so as to not impede the flow en-US of traffic turning from Monterey to US #1 or en-US the traffic turning onto Monterey from US en-US #1 and maybe causing an accident.en-US I am so appalled by inconsideration of en-US first the A/C van and then to have the Sheren-US -en-US iff's Department do the same illegal turn, en-US setting an example of disobeying the law. en-US This is why our young people of today have en-US no respect for authority. Why should they, en-US when the authority who should be setting en-US the example, ignores the law.en-USFighting robo callsen-USIn response to the reader who is being en-US bombarded with robo calls. Go online to en-US nomorobo.comen-US and register your phone en-US number. Its free for landlines and $1.99 per en-US month for smartphones. No gimmicks. en-USWorks like a charm. We love it. The phone en-US will ring one time and then disconnect. I en-US can put up with that!en-USReducing panicen-USThere is a very useful free app for your en-US cell phone. There also is a live feed on their en-US website. They are also on Facebook. It is zip en-US code specific. It might help the writer and en-US readers who are concerned by storm panic. en-US "Florida Storms" is powered by Florida en-US Public Radio Emergency Network. [FPREN] en-US It provides tropics updates, evacuation/trafen-US -en-US fic information, weather, alerts, maps, radar, en-US radio feeds and more.en-USSome adviceen-USA recent plea asked on how to deal with en-US telephone solicitations. In short why are you en-US answering the phone? The call back method en-US is very effective. Caller ID is helpful as it en-US identifies friends, important vendors/cusen-US-en-US tomers and relatives. As for calls you dont en-US recognize simply let them go to voicemail. en-US A phone with call memory will allow recall en-US of unknown numbers. When I call back a en-US solicitation usually the following occurs: 1. en-US the line is dead (no answer); 2. the marketen-US -en-US ing company announcement answers your en-US call and asks if you wish to be removed from en-US their call list (very handy); 3. a live person en-US answers but this is rare and they do not usuen-US -en-US ally get call backs and are off script. At my en-US business we keep a call log on a spreadsheet en-US and this is a great way to ID repeat solicitaen-US -en-US tions (offenders). More than 191 milen-US-en-US lion opioid prescriptions were written for en-US patients in the United States in 2017, with en-US wide variation across states. Indian River County, with en-US 21.1 drug deaths per 100,000 people, is en-US lower than the Florida average but higher en-US than the U.S. average.en-US According to the CDC, risk factors for en-US prescription pain reliever abuse and overen-US -en-US dose include obtaining overlapping preen-US -en-US scriptions from multiple providers and en-US pharmacies, taking high daily dosages of en-US prescription opioid pain relievers, having en-US mental illness or a history of alcohol or en-US other substance abuse, living in rural areas, en-US and having low income.en-US Anyone who takes prescription opioids en-US can become addicted. en-US 12 en-USOen-USne of the questions that I am asked en-US frequently has to do with the icons en-US on the typical Windows desktop. en-US Arent they slowing things down? I never en-US use most of them, cant we get rid of them? en-US I usually answer by explaining that most en-US of the icons on the average desktop are not en-US slowing the computer down at all but are en-US actually more like speed dial buttons on a en-US phone. Most desktop icons are just en-US shortcuts to programs buried deeper in the en-US system and are on the desktop so you dont en-US have to navigate through all sorts of menus en-US to launch a program.en-US If you look closely at the icons on your en-US desktop, you may notice that some icons en-US have a little arrow in a little white box at the en-US lower left corner of the icon. The arrow en-US itself is kind of curvy and will point to the en-US top right corner of the icon. You may also en-US notice that other icons (like the Computer en-US icon, the User folder icon, the Recycle Bin en-US Etc.) do not have the little arrow. There is a en-US big difference between the two types of en-US icons the icons with the little arrows are en-US actually just shortcuts and not the actual en-US program (or file). And shortcuts are really en-US really tiny and dont slow the computer en-US down at all!en-US But what about the icons that dont have en-US the little arrow? Are they safe to get rid of? en-US That question is a little harder to answer. en-US You see, any icon on your computer that en-US does not have the little shortcut indicator is en-US either a user file or a system file and en-US messing with it can cause problems. Icons en-US on your desktop that are not shortcuts are en-US either files that have been saved on the en-US desktop or system files that have been set en-US there by the operating system and care en-US should be taken when manipulating them.en-US Another point that I want to make is that en-US people have different ideas as to what the en-US phrase get rid of means! When someone en-US asks me to get rid of all of the unused icons en-US on their desktop what they are invariably en-US asking me to do is to delete them. Now if en-US you have been reading my column for any en-US length of time then you know how I feel en-US about deleting things from your computer en-US its not something I do casually! In fact I en-US have a saying if I were king Id have the en-US delete button stricken from the keyboard! en-US My idea of cleaning a Windows desktop by en-US getting rid of a bunch of stuff is not to en-US delete everything but leans more in line en-US with the phrase out of sight, out of mind. en-US People will watch with a puzzled look on en-US their face as I create yet another icon on en-US their desktop (a new folder), name it en-US something like Desktop Clutter and then en-US drag all of the unused icons into the new en-US folder. Then, once the desktop is down to en-US just the icons that actually get used, I drag en-US the Desktop Clutter folder and drop it into en-US the Users folder. en-US Then I usually spend the next few en-US minutes explaining why I went through all en-US that trouble rather than just deleting en-US everything. My explanation really boils en-US down to habit. One of the worst habits en-US people get into with their machines is the en-US habit of deleting stuff every time they tidy en-US up. Sure its great to have a tidy desktop but en-US if you are in the habit of casually deleting en-US stuff then eventually you are going to delete en-US something you actually need. Even worse is en-US the habit some people have of emptying the en-US recycle bin every time they delete someen-US -en-US thing. Thats just a disaster waiting to en-US happen.en-US My philosophy is out of sight, out of en-US mind. Tidying up my system by sweeping a en-US bunch of unused shortcuts (and actual files en-US for that matter) into a folder and then en-US moving the folder out of sight ensures that en-US if I accidentally do get rid of something en-US that I need, I can recover it easily enough by en-US digging into the folder where I moved it. en-US Does this mean that I am completely en-US against deleting everything? No, of course en-US not. Some things are trash and I have no en-US problem deleting them I just have a real en-US problem with the habit of deleting things en-US with barely a second thought. en-US Sean McCarthy fixes computers.
