The en-US Sebastian-Vero Beach metropolitan area en-US had the fourth largest gap in the country en-US between the top 1 percent and the boten-US -en-US tom 99 percent.en-US The study found that income inequalen-US -en-US ity in the U.S. is the largest it has been en-US since the 1928 peak that preceded the en-US Great Depression.en-US Most large scale economic studies use en-US data that is several years old in order to en-US guarantee that the data is accurate and en-US complete, and this report follows that en-US pattern. This exhaustive study reviewed en-US data through 2015, the last year for en-US which the study authors had compreen-US -en-US hensive and reliable information from en-US across the country. It is expected that it en-US will take a few more years before adeen-US -en-US quate data exists to analyze post-2015 en-US changes.en-US In other words, the study should not en-US be seen as an analysis of policies or en-US trends from the last few years. en-US 2 INDIAN RIVER en-USCOUNTY Each candien-US -en-US date was asked to provide en-US a bio of up to 100 words, en-US and a summary of the en-US biggest issue facing the en-US community that they could address as a en-US County Court Judge. Their answers follow:en-USNicole P. Menz:en-USBio: 49 years old, practicing law in Indian en-US River County for 23 years. My career began en-US as an Assistant State en-US Attorney in Vero en-US Beach in 1995. I en-US served nearly 9 years en-US as a prosecutor repreen-US-en-US senting the people of en-US the Florida and Indien-US -en-US an River County. I en-US prosecuted thousands en-US of cases from DUI to en-US First Degree Murder. en-US I have spent 14 en-US years in private civil en-US practice with the law en-US firm of Menz & Battista. I have been Board en-US Certified in Criminal Trial Law since 2005.en-US For the last 1-1/2 years, I have presided en-US over traffic court as a Civil Traffic Infracen-US-en-US tion Hearing Officer.en-US Q: What is the biggest issue concerning en-US your community right now that you can en-US affect in the office you seek and, if elected, en-US how do you plan on solving that issue?en-US A: One of the biggest issues is the amount en-US of taxpayer dollars spent for cases that are en-US appropriate for diversion. There is a Drug en-US Court Program available to individuals en-US charged with felony possession of drugs en-US (cocaine, hydrocodone) that have no prior en-US record where the evidence indicates the en-US individual is a user and not a seller. Howeven-US-en-US er, there is no such program for someone en-US charged with possession of marijuana in en-US County Court under those same circumen-US -en-US stances. Diversion programs not only save en-US taxpayer dollars but they also reduce recidien-US-en-US vism rates. It is time for diversion programs en-US in County Court. I will seek to implement en-US those programs.en-US Contact info for Nicole Menz:en-US Email: en-US nicole@menzforjudge.comen-US Website: en-US www.menzforjudge.comen-USKiernan Patrick Moylan:en-USBio: Practicing law for more than nineen-US-en-US teen years, eleven in public service. For en-US about three years I worked as a Florida en-US Assistant State Attorney General handling en-US constitutional questions at a trial level, en-US defending the State in civil rights and other en-US matters. For seven years I have been an en-US Assistant Public Defender handling all types en-US of criminal matters, particularly for the past en-US five years assigned to all cases of the Office en-US in Indian River County Courts. I started my en-US legal career as in-house counsel in a large en-US Florida company, where I became a Senior en-US Vice President. My en-US wife and I live in en-US Indian River Shores en-US with our three chilen-US-en-US dren.en-US Q: What is the bigen-US -en-US gest issue concerning en-US your community en-US right now that you en-US can affect in the office en-US you seek and, if electen-US -en-US ed, how do you plan en-US on solving that issue?en-US A: My goal for my en-US service as a county judge is to carry forward en-US the current successful system in our Indian en-US River County Court System. I hope to work en-US with Court Administration, Office of the en-US State Attorney and the Office of the Public en-US Defender to create more diversion court en-US opportunities as allowed by the current staten-US -en-US utes. I also believe we need to address the en-US driving while license suspended issue curen-US -en-US rently facing Indian River County and I will en-US work within the bounds of the law to facilien-US -en-US tate.en-US Contact info for Kiernan Patrick Moylan:en-US Email: en-US kiernan@moylanforjudge.com en-US Website: en-US moylanforjudge.comen-US Facebook: moylanforjudgeen-USRobyn Stone:en-USBio: I was born and raised in Vero Beach. en-US I am a third-generaen-US-en-US tion attorney in Indien-US -en-US an River County. Currently, I am a en-US county court supervisor and I work in our en-US Mental Health Court, Veterans Court, and en-US Drug Court. I live in Vero Beach.en-US Q: What is the biggest issue concerning en-US your community right now that you can en-US affect in the office you seek and, if elected, en-US how do you plan on solving that issue?en-US A: According to the National Institute on en-US Drug Abuse, more than 115 people in the en-US United States die every day after overdosing en-US on opioids. I know from my experience as en-US an Assistant State Attorney and a drug court en-US team member that the opioid crisis affects en-US us here in Indian River County. Opioid en-US addition often leads to other crime such as en-US thefts and burglaries. In county court, I en-US would strive to address drug addictions by en-US doing what I could do to identify entry level en-US drug users and connect them with the many en-US services and treatment centers our county en-US has to offer.en-US Contact info for Robyn E. en-US 3 en-USVERO BEACH Moore Motors of Vero en-US Beach has been selling and servicing outen-US-en-US door power equipment like lawnmowers for en-US 32 years. If, like this writer, youve driven by en-US the U.S. 1 location hundreds of times withen-US -en-US out ever going in, you need to have a look, en-US especially if youre in the market for a lawnen-US -en-US mower.en-US Until I visited with owner Dennis Moore en-US recently, I had no idea how deep and well-en-US stocked the showroom is. Just driving by, en-US you have no idea how huge it is.en-US Were probably the biggest independent en-US dealer on the coast, as far as size and amount en-US of inventory, Mr. Moore told Hometown en-US News. Theres nobody on the Treasure en-US Coast thats got an inventory like this.en-US Before you buy a lawnmower, you need to en-US visit Moore Motors. If you want to go someen-US -en-US place where youre not going to see just a en-US handful of models, this is your place.en-US You can look at a hundred lawnmowers, en-US thats for sure, Mr. Moore said. en-US At any given time theres probably 200 en-US lawnmowers here. And weve got a wareen-US -en-US house in the back thats full. We have lines en-US you wont find at the box stores. We have en-US mowers for everyone from the entry level en-US homeowner all the way up to professionals. en-US Weve got lawnmowers that start at less than en-US $2,000, up to $15,000. Weve got something en-US for everybody. We sell not only to homeen-US -en-US owners, but also landscaping companies. en-US Whatever the application is, we have the en-US tool for the job.en-US And Moore Motors has more than just en-US mowers. As Mr. Moore explained, they have en-US all the equipment you need for maintaining en-US your outdoor property. That includes Stihl en-US chainsaws, blowers, hedge-trimmers and en-US weed-wackers, and anything and everyen-US-en-US thing that involves making tall grass short.en-US Moore Motors only sells top-of-the-line en-US equipment like Cub Cadet, Bobcat, and en-US Hustler. They used to sell John Deere, but en-US dont anymore because that company wanten-US -en-US ed to move the independent dealers to sell en-US only their product. Dennis Moore was a en-US John Deere dealer for 20 years, but he wanten-US-en-US ed to continue selling a full line of other en-US manufacturers.en-US When John Deere left us, it gave us an en-US opportunity to stock more of the other manen-US -en-US ufacturers. For people looking for John en-US Deere, we invite them to compare that to en-US what we have, and they may find a superior en-US product, Mr. Moore said. Cub Cadet is a en-US major player. Bobcat is a major player. Husen-US -en-US tler is a real old company. These manufacen-US -en-US turers dont build disposable equipment. en-US They build premium products that are en-US designed to last and give you more than en-US your moneys worth. We dont sell throwen-US -en-US away products that in five years youll be en-US looking to replace.en-US Moore Motors does still service and en-US maintain John Deere products, as well as en-US almost every other brand.en-US What separates us from the en-US box stores is that we have parts en-US and we have service. If you buy it en-US here, we service it here. You dont en-US have to call an 800 number and en-US get directed to go someplace for en-US service. You bring it back here and en-US we take care of it. Were a one-stop en-US shop.en-US There are very few things that en-US we cant work on. We stock belts en-US and blades and filters for almost en-US every lawnmower in existence, en-US not just the ones we sell. Because en-US we work on everything, so we have en-US to have the parts.en-US While the new equipment en-US inventory is enormous, service en-US and parts are the mainstay of Moore Motors.en-US We built this business on service and en-US parts, said Mr. Moore. Theres nothing en-US that we sell here that we cannot provide en-US parts and service for. If you buy a lawnmowen-US -en-US er from a box store and you have a problem en-US with it, you cant take it back there. Theyre en-US going to send you someplace.en-US Everything Ive got here on the floor is en-US made in the U.S. The Bobcats, Cub Cadets, en-US Hustlers are all made right here in the U.S. en-US And we have some of the best warranties in en-US the industry.en-US Were always running good financing en-US specials. We can offer zero percent interest en-US on most lines. We can provide good financen-US -en-US ing programs right here, through the manuen-US -en-US facturers. That gives us a tool to offer an en-US incentive to the customer. If you dont want en-US to reach into your pocket for the money en-US right now, I can offer you 48 months at zero en-US percent. And if youve got a five year waren-US -en-US ranty, the warranty will run a year longer en-US than the payments. That doesnt happen en-US most places.en-US Moore Motors sells mostly new equipen-US-en-US ment, but they also sell some used, because en-US they take trade-ins. If you have a mower en-US thats still got some life left in it, you can en-US trade it in on a new one, which theyll recon en-US-en-US dition and sell as a used mower.en-US Cub Cadet makes a line of utility vehien-US-en-US cles, and we also sell those, said Mr. Moore. en-US If youve got 10 acres of property, not only en-US do we have everything it takes to maintain en-US it, but weve got vehicles so you can roam en-US around on it.en-US So if youre looking for lawnmowers, en-US trimmers, chainsaws, weed-wackers, or any en-US other yard care products, be sure to visit en-US Moore Motors. And if you see something on en-US the website of one of the manufacturers they en-US carry like Bobcat or Cub Cadet, let Dennis en-US Moore or Parts Manager Richard Davis en-US know, and they can order it for you if they en-US dont already have it. en-US We dont stock every single thing youll en-US see on their websites, but we can get anyen-US -en-US thing you see on our dealers websites.en-US Moore Motors also offers a pick-up and en-US delivery service for both purchases and en-US repairs. If you need a lawnmower picked up en-US for service, just give them a call.en-US Moore Motors is located at 5135 U.S. 1, en-US Vero Beach. For his entire term as governor he has en-US been in the hip pocket of Big Sugar and en-US other industrial polluters, and developers en-US who have been allowed to ignore environen-US -en-US mental regulations. He and the republican en-US legislature have refused to implement any en-US controls over pollution discharged into the en-US Lake Okeechobee watershed and have en-US thwarted any attempts to divert water from en-US the lake south instead of east and west.en-US Now he shows up to lament the problem en-US he has had a significant role in causing. He en-US blames Nelson and the Corps of Engineers. en-US I am no big Nelson fan by any means but en-US Scotts abysmal environmental record renen-US -en-US ders his protestations and smearing of Nelen-US-en-US son disingenuous at best. Scott will say en-US whatever he feels will get him elected but as en-US soon as he is in Washington he will conveen-US -en-US niently forget about all of this and our situaen-US -en-US tion will again take a back seat to lobbyists en-US and contributions.en-US Yes, the Corps of Engineers could do a en-US better job. Yes, Nelson has let us down. en-US But Rick Scott has been active in aiding en-US and abetting in the pollution of Lake en-US Okeechobee and our water. Hes pocketed en-US tens of thousands of dollars from the polluten-US-en-US ers and has let them have their way. Dont en-US forget that at the polls.en-USRe: Slow driversen-USI would like to concur with the writer of en-US the rave concerning "Slow Drivers" in the en-US August 3, 2018 issue. I also have driven in en-US several countries and Americans are by far en-US the worst drivers, mostly because they en-US believe they know EVERYTHING when en-US they really don't. en-US For example, my major concern is when I en-US am driving in the right lane and someone en-US goes flying past me in the passing lane and en-US then IMMEDIATELY pulls over into my en-US lane TEN FEET in front of my front en-US bumper! en-US It is a terrifying and constant experience en-US on Florida's Turnpike. I am sure none of en-US these drivers know that in order to pull over en-US safely after passing, you must make sure you en-US can see BOTH of the following vehicles en-US headlights in your rear view mirror (not the en-US side mirror!) before making the move. en-US I wish we could teach drivers the rules of en-US the road and the traffic laws in such a way en-US that they would not resist learning them. en-US We would all be much safer.en-US Thank you very much. I am very en-US impressed with our local Hometown News. en-US I turn to it weekly for excellent coverage of en-US local events and people. Please keep up the en-US good work.en-USPartnership should en-US mean lower taxesen-USRead a recent article on IRMC. The artien-US -en-US cle mentioned that if Cleveland Clinic parten-US-en-US ners up with IRMC, this should reduce tax en-US millage amount. This should mean a lower en-US rate for taxpayers! IRMC are already getting en-US more tax dollars based on higher property en-US values, so a double dip by raising millage en-US amount is a JOKE. NOT an expanse of proen-US -en-US grams which mean more taxpayers' money. en-US Thats the problem with community owned en-US hospitals, they pass things on to taxpayers en-US even if they have poor fiscal management.en-USElectionsen-USI am very grateful to the Hometown News en-US for your articles about candidates running en-US for office. It is a great way to help educate en-US yourselves about who to vote for. We all en-US know the many flyers and advertisements en-US say what they want to do. Whether they en-US actually do that if they have no track record en-US is not guaranteed. And finally, checking out en-US their campaign finance report tells a story in en-US itself about who they may or may not be en-US beholding to. en-US I was dismayed to hear that Martin Counen-US -en-US ty is not allowing for early voting like Palm en-US Beach and other nearby counties. I do not en-US understand why this is not standard in Floren-US -en-US ida. Making it harder for people to get to the en-US polls is not fair to those who may have a en-US hard time getting there the day of the elecen-US-en-US tions. Most importantly, let's all get out and en-US exercise our hard fought for right to vote!en-USService vs. comfort animalsen-USKudos to Publix for educating their cusen-US -en-US tomers on the difference between service en-US animals and comfort animals. en-US They are not one in the same.en-US As a shopper please leave your comfort en-US animals home from storesen-US Hope other stores follow, it's gotten out of en-US control!en-USProud to be a readeren-USAnd I'm glad I finally get my paper like en-US clockwork now on Friday morn.... thank en-US you! en-US The rants & raves this week were right on. en-US I was really impressed with Publix's stateen-US en-USment about the service animals. I think all en-US stores should follow suit! I am the first to say en-US I love all animals but too many folks take en-US advantage of the opportunity to drag those en-US poor babies out in the heat and put them en-US thru the humiliation of strangers fussing all en-US over them, etc. The animals are loyal to you, en-US the owners, they would probably be happy en-US waiting at home til you return. Other than en-US dragging them into the stores, or the beach, en-US yard sales ... have a little compassion for en-US your animals. Just because you want them en-US under your wing does not mean it is pleasen-US -en-US ant for the animal!en-USBe more considerateen-USHow come is it that ordinarily considerate en-US folk will go out of their way to throw a wrapen-US-en-US per or napkin or any manner of trash into a en-US garbage pail, yet these same people dont en-US think twice about throwing cigarette butts en-US out a car window or on the beach.en-US How unthinking or inconsiderate does en-US one have to be to think its OK to use the en-US beautiful beaches and roadways as an ashen-US -en-US tray? Doesnt it bother people to see youngen-US -en-US sters playing in the sand with cancer causing en-US cigarette butts around them? Ive seen innoen-US-en-US cent children using cigarette butts as ornaen-US -en-US mentation on their sand castles. How disen-US -en-US turbing is that?en-US Hopefully the right eyes will read this. It en-US is easy to knock the cherry off of the butt en-US and put it in a garbage or your pocket or en-US your purse or wherever until you find a garen-US -en-US bage pail.en-US Police should enforce the law and fine en-US people for littering. en-US 7 INDIAN RIVER en-USCOUNTY Each candien-US -en-US date was asked to provide en-US a bio of up to 100 words, en-US and a summary of the en-US biggest issue facing the en-US community that they could address as a Ciren-US -en-US cuit Judge. Their answers follow:en-USLouis Lou Larsen:en-USBio: Ive worked as an attorney over 26 en-US years. I am a board certified civil trial lawen-US -en-US yer among only 7 percent of all Florida en-US attorneys. Ive worked most of my career on en-US the Treasure Coast representing individuals en-US and businesses in many different matters en-US including personal injury, criminal defense, en-US general civil litigation and marital law. My en-US non-litigation practice areas include wills en-US and trusts, probate, trademarks, copyrights, en-US liens and business transactions. I am of en-US counsel with the Treasure Coast Legal law en-US firm with offices in Stuart, Port St. Lucie en-US and Ft. Pierce. I am admitted in six states en-US and also the federal court for the southern en-US district of Florida.en-US Q: What is the biggest issue concerning en-US your community right now that you can en-US affect in the office you seek and, if elected, en-US how do you plan on solving that issue?en-US A: Circuit judges are responsible for en-US many different matters in addition to crimien-US -en-US nal law. Currently, 14 of the 29 judges in our en-US circuit are former en-US prosecutors. One of en-US my opponents is a en-US prosecutor and the en-US other is a former en-US policeman turned en-US lawyer with a practice en-US focusing primarily in en-US criminal law. Our en-US bench needs diversity en-US in legal experience to en-US fill this vacancy. Our en-US bench needs judges en-US with experience in all en-US areas of circuit judge responsibility not just en-US criminal law. I am the only candidate with en-US the depth and breadth of experience to hanen-US -en-US dle any of the judicial assignments on the en-US first day of work.en-US Contact info for Louis Larsen: en-US www.laren-US -en-US sen4judge.com, www.facebook.com/lou.larsen-US-en-US en.353en-US Email: en-US campaign@larsen4judge.com.en-USRobert Bob Meadows:en-USBio: 60 years old. This cycle cannot be en-US broken by the judiciary alone. There are en-US diversionary programs in other jurisdicen-US-en-US tions that are having a positive effect on our en-US youth. I feel that the institution of the proen-US -en-US grams pertinent to our community should en-US be looked at and implemented. Its en-US the result of intentional policy decisions to en-US shift bargaining power away from working en-US people and towards the top one percent. To en-US reverse this, we should enact policies that en-US boost workers ability to bargain for higher en-US wages, rein in the salaries of CEOs and the en-US financial sector, and implement a progresen-US -en-US sive tax system.en-US Rising inequality affects virtually every en-US part of the country, not just large urban en-US areas or financial centers, said co-author en-US Estelle Sommeiller, a socio-economist at the en-US Institute for Research in Economic and en-US Social Sciences in France. Its a persistent en-US problem throughout the country in big citen-US -en-US ies and small towns, in all 50 states. en-US 10 en-USVERO BEACH On Aug. 7, the Indian en-US River County Sheriffs Office held a news en-US conference to remind residents that the en-US search for Susy Tomassi continues, and a en-US reward remains in effect.en-US On March 16, at approximately 5 p.m., en-US Assunta Susy Tomassi was sitting outside en-US the Quilted Giraffe restaurant she owns en-US with her husband, Patrick Tomassi. Ms. en-US Tomassi is known to sit outside the restauen-US -en-US rant and read a book or smoke, and that is en-US where she told her husband she would be.en-US On the evening of Friday, March 16, Ms. en-US Tomassi walked away from the Quilted en-US Giraffe restaurant and simply vanished, en-US Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar en-US said. We have been actively looking for en-US anybody that is involved in her disappearen-US -en-US ance. We have chased down nearly 100 en-US leads, up and down the east coast of the en-US U.S., as well as throughout Indian River en-US County. Detective (Mike) Dilks has worked en-US tirelessly chasing down every lead possible, en-US as well as our entire criminal investigative en-US division. Today, were making another plea en-US for anyone that has seen anything, heard en-US anything, knows anything to come forward.en-US Ms. Tomassi frequently walked to the en-US South Vero Square plaza to visit the Family en-US Dollar store. Ms. Tomassi had been known en-US to wander off before, but Mr. Tomassi had en-US always been able to locate her. At approxien-US -en-US mately 6 p.m., Mr. Tomassi realized Ms. en-US Tomassi was missing, and began looking for en-US her. Surveillance video obtained from Wilden-US -en-US wood Antique Mall in South Vero Square en-US shows Ms. Tomassi walking in front of the en-US business.en-US Based on surveillance video obtained en-US from businesses in South Vero Square, we en-US know that at 5:41 p.m., Mrs. Tomassi was en-US walking south through the South Vero en-US Square Plaza, Sheriff Loar said. We also en-US believe that she did not enter the Family en-US Dollar store or walk past Publix. It is possien-US -en-US ble that she may have accepted a ride or exiten-US -en-US ed the plaza another way.en-US Time has stopped since she went missen-US -en-US ing, daughter in law Cary Baker said at the en-US news conference. Choking back tears, Mr. en-US Tomassi added It doesnt get easier. This in no way is a cold case, it is not a en-US case on the back burner, this is front and en-US center.en-US Asked if he had any ideas what could have en-US happened, Det. Dilks said I do not. I can en-US only speculate. I am confident (after our en-US search that night) that she got to a vehicle of en-US some sort. It was the day before St. Patricks en-US Day, an easy day to remember. If anybody en-US has any information about what car she got en-US into, or who she left the area with, we need en-US to know, and we need to know it soon.en-US Wed like to thank the community as well en-US for all of the support over almost five en-US months, Ms. Baker said. Dilks en-US said. Some of these Im getting, people have en-US known this information for a month or two en-US and were just scared to come forward. The en-US fear of retaliation from somebody who may en-US have caused harm is now superseding the en-US right thing.en-US Det. Dilks said the leads had led them to en-US contact agencies in New Jersey, Georgia, en-US North Carolina, and the west coast of Florien-US -en-US da.en-US When Ms. Tomassi was originally reporten-US -en-US ed missing, family and friends conducted an en-USextensive search.
