GasBuddy had a slightly higher projection, en-US estimating that drivers would pay an average of en-US $2.90 per gallon.en-US In Florida, the Independence Day average en-US was $2.706, 13th lowest in the nation. The lowen-US -en-US est Florida prices were $2.49 in Clearwater.en-US South Carolina had the lowest average at en-US 2.515. In the en-US sentence that previously read Bargaining en-US unit employees shall not be entitled to light en-US or restricted duty for non-duty related illen-US -en-US ness, injury, or condition (such as pregnanen-US-en-US cy), except as required by applicable law, en-US the parties agreed to strike such as and en-US replace it with not including.en-US In April, we reported on a dispute en-US between Indian River County firefighter en-US Nicole Morris and the county regarding Ms. en-US Morris request for light duty assignment en-US while pregnant.en-US Ms. Morris had experienced a running en-US disagreement with County Fire Chief John en-US King regarding her shifts since before the en-US beginning of her pregnancy.en-US The change removes Indian River Counen-US -en-US ty from a very short list of fire departments en-US not offering light duty during pregnancy.en-US Manatee County and Indian River en-US County are the only ones that dont have en-US these provisions in place, John OConnor, en-US President, International Association of Fireen-US-en-US fighters Local 2201, told the County Comen-US-en-US missioners in March. en-US 3 en-USINDIAN RIVER COUNTY Substance en-US Abuse Free Indian River and the Visiting en-US Nurse Association of the Treasure Coast en-US have launched a partnership to promote the en-US proper disposal of prescription medications.en-US Through an initiative called SAFIR Rx, en-US the groups will purchase and distribute en-US Deterra pouches, which are specially en-US designed to render pills, patches, and liquids en-US harmless.en-US Our goal is to support a safe and healthy en-US environment for our county residents, said en-US Robin Dapp, Chair of the Substance Abuse en-US Free Indian River Coalition.en-US According to Deterras website, each en-US pouch contains a water-soluble inner pod en-US containing activated carbon. Once the drugs en-US are placed in the pouch, warm water is then en-US added, which dissolves the inner pod and en-US releases the activated carbon. Once en-US absorbed by the carbon, the medications are en-US rendered inert and non-retrievable. Each of en-US the 300 donated pouches can hold up 90 en-US pills, making it possible to prevent 27,000 en-US pills from ending up in the wrong hands or en-US the environment.en-US According to a study by the California en-US State Board of Pharmacy, medicines flushed en-US down toilets have led to 80 percent of U.S. en-US streams contain small amounts of human en-US medicines. Sewage systems cannot remove en-US medicine from water that is released into en-US lakes, rivers or oceans. Fish and other aquaten-US -en-US ic animals have shown adverse effects from en-US medicines in the water. Small amounts of en-US medicine have even been found in drinking en-US water.en-US The Washington Poison Center says meden-US -en-US icines that are flushed or poured down the en-US drain have been found by scientists in suren-US -en-US face, ground and marine waters as well as en-US soils and sediments in the Pacific Northen-US -en-US west. Even at very low levels, medicines in en-US the environment hurt aquatic life.en-US Deterra says its drug deactivation pouch en-US is made from environmentally sound en-US materials. This allows for the degradation of en-US the plastic pouch and zipper through the en-US use of organic additives that are consumed en-US by microbes found in landfills. The result is en-US the release of water and carbon dioxide, en-US with little organic biomass left behind. This en-US greatly reduces the amount of material left en-US in landfills. The company adds that the en-US drugs will be retained in the activated caren-US -en-US bon no matter what they are exposed to in en-US the landfill.en-US In addition, the local coalition says that en-US unused medications left in medicine cabien-US-en-US nets are often taken by teens and others, en-US leading to drug abuse problems. They cite a en-US study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg en-US School of Public Health indicating that en-US nearly 70 percent of opioid medications in en-US homes with children are not stored safely, en-US and a MetLife Foundation study saying 56 en-US percent of teens said its easy to get prescripen-US -en-US tion drugs from their parents medicine caben-US-en-US inet. They also reference a National Survey en-US of Drug Use and Health saying that 80 peren-US -en-US cent of all heroin users report misusing preen-US -en-US scription opiates prior to illicit drug use.en-US Our mission is to keep our community en-US healthy, safe and substance abuse free, said en-US Ms. Dapp. en-US As a new member of the SAFIR Coalien-US -en-US tion, we are proud to provide home healthen-US -en-US care and hospice patients and caregivers en-US with a safe, convenient way to properly disen-US -en-US pose of unused and expired medications, en-US added Kathy Orton, VNAs Vice President en-US of Clinical Services/Chief Regulatory Offien-US -en-US cer. SAFIRs donation of Deterra pouches is en-US a most appreciated resource for our patient en-US population.en-US The results from a National Survey on en-US Drug Use and Health revealed that nearly en-US half of all opioid misuse starts with a friend en-US or family members prescription, and its en-US likely not a current prescription but one that en-US was left over from a root canal or knee suren-US -en-US gery, said former U.S. Representative Mary en-US Bono, who is on the Deterra Advisory en-US Council. Its this diversion point, a family en-US members medicine cabinet, that Deterra en-US can help with. If everyone had a Deterra en-US pouch and disposed of their unused medien-US -en-US cations, there would be far fewer pills availen-US-en-US able for people looking to abuse them.en-US The opioid epidemic is simply too big en-US for one solution, said William Alden, en-US Chairman of the Board of the DEA Educaen-US-en-US tional Foundation. Its going to take everyen-US -en-US one working together in whatever way they en-US can to finally turn the tide on opioid abuse. I en-US wanted to work with Deterra because this is en-US one of the things that gives individuals the en-US opportunity to be a part of preventing abuse. en-US If you have unused drugs in your house and en-US you think you dont know anyone struggling en-US with abuse, you think no one is going to en-US help themselves, you have not been watchen-US-en-US ing the news. Get a Deterra pouch and clean en-US out your medicine cabinet yesterday. en-USThe bags are available online and are disen-US -en-US tributed to the community at local health en-US fairs and events by the SAFIR Rx Coalition.en-US For more information, contact Robin Dapp en-US at (772) 770-4811 or visit en-USsafirc.org.en-US The VNA offers home health, hospice and en-US private care services throughout Indian River en-US County. en-US 4 en-USdoesnt even have a need to create a pregen-US-en-US nancy policy. That puts Indian River Counen-US-en-US ty dead last in the state of Florida. Even the en-US Indian River County Sheriffs Office has a en-US light duty pregnancy policy.en-US On June 13, union Vice President Kevin en-US Delashmutt sent a letter to County Adminen-US -en-US istrator Jason Brown that said This week, en-US IAFF Local 2201 conducted ratification voten-US -en-US ing regarding the tentatively agreed to lanen-US -en-US guage revision in Article 26.12 of the curen-US -en-US rent Collective Bargaining Agreement. This en-US language relates to light duty for pregnancy. en-US We are happy to inform you that our memen-US -en-US bership has ratified this language change. en-US We look forward to seeing the Board of en-US County Commissioners ratify this change. en-US We would also like to thank the County en-US Administration, the Board of County Comen-US -en-US missioners, and the Fire Rescue Adminisen-US -en-US tration for making this change happen. Its a en-US positive step for the female members of our en-US department.en-US On June 18, County Human Resources en-US Director Suzanne Boyll sent a memo to the en-US commissioners recommending approval of en-US the contract amendment.en-US At the July 3 County Commissioners en-US meeting, the only question was whether the en-US light duty assignment would be automatic, en-US or would need to be requested and conen-US-en-US firmed by a doctor.en-US In reply to Comm. Tim Zorcs question en-US about whether a doctors note would be en-US required, Ms. Boyll said:en-US At the point in time that the employee en-US presents information to us that states I have en-US work restrictions, Im seeking light duty due en-US to pregnancy, that is the process that would en-US be followed. We do not mandate light duty. en-US Someone would request it and provide the en-US necessary work restrictions.en-US We would look at the restrictions and en-US then find assignment that is within the work en-US restrictions that have been assigned.en-US Comm. Joe Flescher said This is a well en-US crafted document and its long overdue.en-US Comm. Peter OBryan added Jason en-US (Brown) deserves a lot of credit for working en-US with our union and the union leadership to en-US bring this about. I think it is a good policy en-US change, although its going to increase some en-US costs down the road, but I think its still the en-US right thing to do.en-US The motion to adopt the contract amenden-US -en-US ment passed 5-0. No objections were voiced en-US by any County Commissioner or any memen-US -en-US ber of the public. Over the first four days of en-US July, GasBuddy estimated, gas purchases en-US cost motorists $1.02 billion more than last en-US year.en-US Several domestic and international facen-US-en-US tors are driving the high prices. According en-US to the U.S. Energy Information Administraen-US-en-US tion, U.S. exports have surged to a record en-US high. While U.S. refineries are running at a en-US very high 97.5 percent of capacity, much of en-US that domestically produced oil is sold en-US abroad.en-US As the EIA explains on its website, Refinen-US -en-US ers in the U.S. Gulf Coast region frequently en-US find that it makes economic sense to export en-US some of their gasoline to Mexico rather than en-US shipping it to the East Coast of the United en-US States.en-US The record setting exports dramatically en-US increase the amount of petroleum the U.S. en-US needs to import. According to the EIA, in en-US 2017 the United States produced about 15.4 en-US million barrels of petroleum per day en-US (MMb/d), and it consumed about 19.9 en-US MMb/d. en-US In 2017, total U.S. petroleum exports en-US averaged about 6.3 MMb/d.en-US Canada is the largest source of U.S. petroen-US -en-US leum imports. Canadas share of U.S. petroen-US-en-US leum imports has increased from 15 percent en-US in 1994 to 40 percent in 2017.en-US After Canada, the largest sources of U.S. en-US petroleum imports were Saudi Arabia, 9 en-US percent, Mexico, 7 percent, Venezuela, 7 en-US percent, and Iraq, 6 percent.en-US According to the EIA, petroleum figures en-US include more products than just crude oil. en-US Petroleum includes gasoline, diesel fuel, jet en-US fuel, unfinished oils, and other liquids such en-US as fuel ethanol.en-US The five largest destinations of U.S. petroen-US -en-US leum exports in 2017 were Mexico, 17 peren-US -en-US cent, Canada, 13 percent, China, 7 percent, en-US Brazil, 6 percent, and Japan, 6 percent.en-US U.S. petroleum imports peaked in 2005 en-US and then declined until 2015. This was the en-US result of many factors, including a decline in en-US consumption, improvements in vehicle fuel en-US economy, increased use of domestic biofuels en-US like ethanol, and increased domestic proen-US-en-US duction of crude oil and hydrocarbon gas en-US liquids. That trend reversed in 2015, and en-US imports and consumption both increased in en-US 2015 through 2017.en-US Going into the July 4 holiday, I cant en-US remember the last time oil markets were so en-US active, said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroen-US -en-US leum analysis for GasBuddy. Oil has surged en-US over 10 percent just in time for summers en-US busiest travel holiday, costing motorists over en-US $1 billion more than last year. All the ingreen-US -en-US dients exist for the national average to inch en-US closer to $3 per gallon, just in time for the en-US second half of the summer. Undoubtedly, en-US the second half of the summer will be pricien-US -en-US er than the first, thanks to OPECs producen-US -en-US tion increase falling short of expectations, en-US sanctions to be placed back on Iran by en-US November and falling U.S. oil inventories. en-US And to rub some salt in the wound, hurrien-US -en-US cane season is upon us, adding more guessen-US-en-US work to where gas prices might spend the en-US second half of the summer. Be ready for volen-US -en-US atility and likely higher prices at the pump en-US in July and August.en-US The State Department has ordered buyers en-US to reduce or end oil purchases from Iran by en-US November. At the same time, total petroen-US -en-US leum exports from the U.S. hitting a record en-US high have reduced U.S. inventories to about en-US a third of what was expected. AAA says a en-US consistent decline in supplies could spark en-US even higher gas prices.en-US Elevated crude oil prices and other geoen-US -en-US political concerns could tilt gas prices more en-US expensive in the early fall despite an expecten-US-en-US ed increase in global crude production from en-US OPEC and its partners, said AAA spokesen-US-en-US person Jeanette Casselano.en-US AAA is tracking other factors it expects to en-US impact pump prices through the fall, includen-US -en-US ing increasing demand in the U.S. and ecoen-US-en-US nomic volatility in Libya and Venezuela.en-US If U.S. demand remains strong and en-US domestic and global supply decline, motoren-US -en-US ists may see the national gas prices average en-US to potentially jump back up to nearly $3/en-US gallon in coming months, added Ms. Casen-US-en-US selano.en-USFirefightersen-USFrom page 1en-USGasen-USFrom page 1 en-GBthird Wednesday each month, Suncoast en-GB Mental Health Center, 2814 S. Whats with the en-USlawn ornaments?en-USWhy do folks own boats, trailed and en-US stored in their yards, that never seem to get en-US any use? At least one house in Port St. Lucie en-US has no less than four trailed boats stored on en-US this residential property. These unused en-US boats are just some sort of lawn trophy en-US Hey, I am so rich and wasteful, I own a boat en-US I never use. If the boat hasnt touched water en-US in a year, sell it to someone who wants use it en-US and not just own it.en-USStop fighting Brightlineen-USIt seems fighting against Brightline has en-US had another side effect for the Treasure en-US Coast, not only will we not be getting a train en-US station here to slow it down on its way to en-US Orlando and Disney to connect a metropolen-US -en-US itan area of 6 million with a metro area of 3 en-US million, now we wont be silencing our en-US horns any time soon the way cities to our en-US South are about to. According to the Palm en-US Beach newspapers May 10th headlines, en-US Brightlines upgrades are about to silence en-US train horns on FCC tracks in six out of seven en-US cities beginning really soon. Anybody liven-US-en-US ing within a mile of the tracks knows the en-US nightly assault on the ears hearing those en-US horns blaring in the silence of the night at en-US two, three and four oclock in the morning. en-US Many must be regretting the decision to en-US fight against the trains coming by here and en-US the silencing of the horns that would have en-US brought us. Now as these trains approach, en-US theyll keep mercilessly blaring their horns en-US as hard as they possibly could during the en-US wee hours of the morning just remind us of en-US our stupidity and the transfer of wealth to en-US the lawyers pockets fighting this losing war. en-US You aint stopping this train, sorry, aint en-US going to happen. Fight for a train station en-US instead.en-USHelp to en-US reduce panicen-USWe can reduce the panic spread by the en-US Chicken Little local news as weather peren-US -en-US sons during hurricane season. We need a en-US website that, when you enter your zip code en-US and a hurricane is near, will give you the en-US winds expected in that zip code in the next en-US 24, 36, and 48 hours. That way, the panic en-US about high winds can be narrowed to a en-US small area instead of wide spread panic.en-USVote no!en-USVote No to Incorporate. I have been comen-US -en-US ing to Hobe Sound for forty years and it has en-US not changed much over time. Yes, there are en-US more homes and the shopping centers at en-US Bridge Road and US 1 but the quaintness of en-US Hobe Sound is still here. What are the proen-US -en-US ponents of incorporation going to save us en-US from? Martin County has been doing a good en-US job preserving Hobe Sound. In my opinion en-US there are hidden agendas with the people en-US pushing for incorporation. Taxes will go up en-US to pay for an additional layer of Governen-US -en-US ment that is not needed. Remember the old en-US saying If it isnt broken dont fix it en-USBe kind en-US to iguanasen-USIts important to remember that animals en-US like the iguanas and boa constrictors en-US invading Florida were once pets, en-US dumped when the novelty wore off. They en-US are here through no fault of their own and en-US should be dealt with humanely. Startling en-US people and eating plants surely shouldnt be en-US cause for a death sentence.en-US In general, iguanas want to stay away en-US from you as much as you want to stay away en-US from them. Make your property unappealen-US-en-US ing to iguanas. en-US There are many plants and ornamentals en-US that iguanas do not eat. If you have fruit en-US trees, dont let dropped fruit stay on the en-US ground. en-US Seal holes, cracks in the walls and floors, en-US and spaces around doors, windows, and en-US plumbing. Make sure your screens are en-US secure and undamaged. Keep brushy areas en-US where iguanas like to nest to a minimum. en-US Hang cheap CDs as wind chimes from en-US trees or prized plants (the reflective surfaces en-US often scare iguanas away). Nonlethal deteren-US -en-US rent sprays are available at hardware stores. en-US Living in harmony with free-roaming en-US iguanas is possible without having to bash en-US their skulls in.en-USWalking dogsen-USLets be honest, people walk their dogs so en-US they can relieve themselves on other peoen-US -en-US ples property. Some walking the dog at en-US night, unleashed, so they dont have to bothen-US -en-US er to clean up and some are doing it in dayen-US -en-US time too. Confronted, they get feisty and try en-US to make you the bad person on top of it. I en-US could easily do without this kind of neighen-US -en-US bors. en-USJust a few thingsen-USFirst I wish to thank the Vietnam Veteren-US -en-US ans of St. Lucie County for the Military en-US Appreciation Game for ALL veterans. But en-US while at the game, I witnessed a grown man en-US grab a baseball that three children were en-US chasing. Instead of giving it to one of the en-US kids, he held his trophy up as if hed done en-US something special. Taking candy from a en-US baby? Shame!!en-US And also shame on the City of Fort Pierce en-US for putting money above locally owned en-US businesses. The Tiki Bar will no longer be en-US locally owned, and I will no longer give en-USthem my business. There are too many en-US locally owned businesses that will appreciate en-US it more. en-USAnthony Inswasty/staff photographeren-USAmerican Icon Brewery held their first Fourth of July Hot Dog Eaten-US -en-US ing Contest on Wednesday, July 4 at their location in Downtown en-US Vero Beach. Scopes en-USFrom page 9en-USWhat vegetables can en-US I grow In the summer?en-USTen-USoday, many folks want to plant their en-US own gardens to get delicious en-US vegetables year round. During the en-US hot summer months, this can be a huge en-US challenge. The very hot temperatures and en-US sizzling sun can take a toll on many crops en-US that we try to propagate. Some of the main en-US staples like tomatoes can really take a en-US beating but sometimes growing them in en-US containers will give you a lot more choices. en-US Keep in mind that container gardening is en-US not good for all crops but it works extremeen-US -en-US ly well with the tomato plant. en-US As with any vegetable garden, the soil is en-US king. You have to purchase and use a good en-US quality soil to get good results. I have en-US always been a fan of Miracle Gro and they en-US make a soil for almost every purpose you en-US can imagine. Their product is not the least en-US expensive but it is one of the best you can en-US buy. en-US If you plan on trying tomatoes during en-US the summer, be sure to use containers that en-US are quite large but still allow you to move en-US them if need be. The object is to find a en-US location where the plants will get filtered en-US sunlight with not too much shade and not en-US too much direct sunlight in the Florida en-US afternoons. In addition, you can move your en-US plants to safety in the event of a severe en-US weather event or hurricane. en-US Many garden centers will carry tomato en-US plants even during the hotter summer en-US months. You might have to do some en-US hunting, but you should be able to locate en-US some. If not, you can always start your en-US plants from seed. If you are impatient like en-US me, you will likely want to locate plants that en-US are already started. When you purchase en-US your plants, be sure to get some vegetable en-US fertilizer. A water soluble is better because en-US there is less chance of burning your crops. en-US You will also want to get some bug spray en-US that is safe for tomatoes and other food en-US crops. With the Florida heat, you will need en-US it. Be sure your containers have excellent en-US drainage. I recommend drilling holes in the en-US bottom of the containers even if they en-US already have some there. en-US Once you have your plants in the en-US containers and you have found the ideal en-US location, the fun begins as you wait for en-US your delicious veggies to grow and ripen. It en-US might take some trial and error to get the en-US right spot and you may encounter issues en-US that you normally might not see during the en-US cooler part of the growing season but once en-US you have the system mastered, you will be en-US able to grow summer tomatoes year after en-US year.en-US There are lots of other choices you might en-US want to try as well such as peppers, sweet en-US potatoes, radishes and even watermelon. en-US Most of these will need to be planted in the en-US ground for the best results and location will en-US be the primary factor for success or failure. en-US Be sure to use a location that at least gets en-US some filtered sun or shade in the heat of the en-US Florida afternoon sun. It is also advisable to en-US find a location that drains well. Vegetable en-US crops do not like locations that get soggy en-US wet and stay that way after an afternoon en-US thunderstorm. en-US If you are from the north where summer en-US is the primary growing season, you will en-US likely want to test out the waters on some of en-US these summer varieties in Florida. Do not en-US be discouraged if your first attempt fails. en-US The first summer garden I planted when I en-US first moved here got almost washed away en-US with a tropical depression. I quickly found en-US out what parts of the back yard flood en-US during heavy rain events.en-US In short, if you are itching to get that en-US summer garden going, by all means tackle en-US it. Since the forecast is for ca below average en-US hurricane season, you just might get that en-US bumper crop you are dreaming about.en-US Joe Zelenak has more than 30 years en-US experience in gardening and landscape.
